Summary: Dynamic components of the control systems involving actuator time delay can strongly influence the dynamics of the controlled floor system. In this paper, an independent modal space design process for active control of floor vibration caused by human‐induced impact excitation is developed based on modal direct velocity feedback control with a phase‐lead compensator using the root locus method to enhance the stability margins and increase the damping of each filtered mode. Spillover effects under residual modes are considered through the placement of the actuator and sensors. Verification experiments using a steel plate specimen are conducted for the proposed procedure, and the test result shows that effective reduction of the vibration level is successfully achieved.
