Tailoring the chemical structures of a precursor polymer for carbon nanofibers (CNFs) produced by thermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers was studied to prepare the electrodes for electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). To improve energy storage performance of CNF electrodes, 6FDA-durene nanofibers were crosslinked by a vapor crosslinking method, and subsequently carbonized. Chemical modification via crosslinking was confirmed by FTIR spectra while the conversion of crosslinked 6FDA-durene into carbon was done by Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical performance of these CNF electrodes was evaluated by assembling coin cells, and the CNFs derived from crosslinked 6FDA-durene nanofibers showed higher specific capacitances, energy densities and cycling stability than those from non-crosslinked ones. It was also shown that CNFs prepared using 1 min crosslinking exhibit the highest energy storage performances, a specific capacitance of 301 F g−1 (at 10 mV s−1), and the maximum energy density of 11.1 Wh kg−1 (at 0.5 A g−1) and power density of 1.8 kW kg−1 (at 6 A g−1). Surface area and porosity of CNFs, which is critical for the performance of EDLC electrodes, were studied by nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements, and it was clearly seen that surface crosslinking of precursor polymers improved surface properties of the resultant CNFs. Flexible, heteroatoms-rich activated carbon nanofibers with fascinating cross-linked architectures are successfully gained in a facile and controllable way via electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) /dicyandiamide (DICY) composite nanofibers followed by carbonation and a CO2 activation process. The unique inter-bonded structures and heteroatoms contents could be easily controlled by adjusting the preoxidation temperature applied in the calcining procedure and the addition of DICY. Significantly, the resultant samples display hierarchical pores with micro/meso/macropores, abundant N, O species doped and unique fiber–fiber interconnections, which considerably boost the electrochemical properties. As an electrode material, the activated N-doped cross-linked carbon nanofibers (ANCLCNFs) show a high capacitance of 323 F g−1 with a current density of 0.5 A g−1, excellent rate capacity (230.1 F g−1 at 20 A g−1) and long-term duration (over 95% after 10000 cycles). Furthermore, the symmetrical supercapacitor delivers a maximum energy density of 14.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 162.5 W kg−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porous carbons derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for a number of energy- and environment-related applications. To integrate the powder MOFs-derived carbon into feasible engineered materials, a facile strategy to fabricate integrated flexible film is developed by growing MOFs nanoparticles on polyimide electrospun nanofibers, followed by calcination, to fabricate freestanding carbon nanofiber membranes decorated with porous carbon. Then vertically polyaniline nanowire arrays are uniformly deposited on the hierarchical porous carbon substrates by in situ polymerization. Thanks to the good distribution of MOFs-derived porous carbon on carbon nanofibers and the compact configuration interwoven by conducting polymers, the designed hybrid electrode could be used directly as a freestanding electrode for supercapacitors, which displayed a high specific capacitance of 1268 F g−1. The assembled flexible solid-state supercapacitor based on the integrated electrodes demonstrated a high volumetric capacitance of 1973 mF cm−3 and a good capacitance retention of 84.9% after 10 000 cycles, which could power a commercial light emitting diode. Today many applications require new effective approaches for energy delivery on demand. Supercapacitors are viewed as essential energy storage devices that can continuously provide quick energy. The performance of supercapacitors is mostly determined by electrode materials that can store energy via electrostatic charge accumulation. This study presents new sustainable cellulose-derived composite electrodes which consist of carbon nanofibrous (CNF) mats covered with vapor-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNF/CNT electrodes have high electrical conductivity and surface area: the two most important features that are responsible for good electrochemical performance of supercapacitor electrodes. The results show that the composite electrodes have fairly high values of specific capacitance (101 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1), energy and power density (10.28 W h kg−1 and 1.99 kW kg−1, respectively, at 1 A g−1) and can retain excellent performance over at least 2000 cycles (96.6% retention). Novel hierarchical chrysanthemum-flower-like carbon nanomaterials (CFL-CNMs) were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition based on acetylene decomposition. A scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope were employed to observe the morphology and structure of the unconventional nanostructures. It is found that the CFL-CNMs look like a blooming chrysanthemum with a stem rather than a spherical flower. The carbon flower has an average diameter of 5 μm, an average stem diameter of 150 nm, branch diameters ranging from 20 to 70 nm, and branch lengths ranging from 0.5 to 3 μm. The morphologies of the CFL-CNMs are unlike any of those previously reported. Fishbone-like carbon nanofibers with a spindle-shaped catalyst locating at the tip can also be found. Furthermore, the catalyst split was proposed to elucidate the formation mechanism of CFL-CNMs. A large and glomerate catalyst particle at the tip of the carbon nanofiber splits into smaller catalyst particles which are catalytic-active points for branch formation, resulting in the formation of CFL-CNMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
