We investigate the ionisation and fragmentation dynamics of free camphor molecules and camphor-doped helium nanodroplets by extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray photons using velocity map imaging combined with photoelectron-photoion coincidence (VMI-PEPICO) spectroscopy. We notably find that the Penning ionisation of camphor in He nanodroplets at h ν = 21.43 eV is soft with nearly identical Penning ionised electron spectra correlated to different molecular fragments. Further, fragmentation following ionisation at all photon energies exhibit a droplet-specific mass peak equivalent to the missing mass of CO, suggesting suppression of further fragmentation inside the droplet. This work reveals unusual features of photoionisation of organic molecules doped in He nanodroplet motivating further experimental and theoretical explorations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) is planted to produce materials such as paper, pulp, viscose, and wood. The eucalyptus gall wasp, Ophelimus eucalypti (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), induces the formation of galls on the leaves of Eucalyptus in North Sumatra, Indonesia. However, the identity of parasitoids associated with O. eucalypti in the field is poorly known. The study aimed to identify the parasitoids and their most prevalent species associated with O. eucalypti. Leaves of Eucalyptus with parasitized galls were sampled from January to October 2021 at Toba, North Tapanuli, and Samosir districts, North Sumatra. The collected material was incubated in the laboratory until gall wasp adults for its parasitoids emerged. Nine hymenopteran parasitoids of O. eucalypti were recovered and identified via analysis of the external morphology. They are Aprostocetus causalis La Salle & Wu, Aprostocetus Westwood sp., Chrysonotomyia germanica Erdös, Chrysonotomyia Ashmead sp. 1, Chrysonotomyia sp. 2, Closterocerus chamaeleon Westwood (Eulophidae), Eurytoma Illiger sp. (Eurytomidae), Quadrastichus mendeli Kim & La Salle and Tetrastichinae sp. (Eulophidae). The prevalence of Chrysonotomyia spp. parasitoid was the highest in the collection. Therefore, those parasitoids can be considered potential candidates as biological agents in the strategy to control the leaf-gall former O. eucalypti.

This work investigates peripheral nerve regeneration using membranes consisting of pure chitosan (CHI), which was further blended with nanofibrillated cellulose, with citric acid as crosslinker, with posterior addition of polyvinyl alcohol, with subsequent freeze thawing. Nanocellulose improves the mechanical and thermal resistance, as well as flexibility of the film, which is ideal for the surgical procedure. The hydrogel presented a slow rate of swelling, which is adequate for cell and drug delivery. A series ofin vitrotests revealed to be non-toxic for neuronal Schwann cell from the peripheral nervous system of Rattus norvegicus, while there was a slight increase in toxicity if crosslink is performed-freeze-thaw. Thein vivoresults, using rabbits with a 5 mm gap nerve defect, revealed that even though pure CHI was able to regenerate the nerve, it did not present functional recovery with only the deep pain attribute being regenerated. When autologous implant was used jointly with the biomaterial membrane, as a covering agent, it revealed a functional recovery within 15 d when cellulose and the hydrogel were introduced, which was attributed to the film charge interaction that may help influence the neuronal axons growth into correct locations. Thus, indicating that this system presents ideal regeneration as nerve conduits.

In this study, we implemented the type II seesaw mechanism into the framework of the gauge model. To achieve this, we added a scalar triplet, , to the canonical particle content of the gauge model. By imposing that the gauge symmetry be spontaneously broken at TeV scale, we show that the type II seesaw mechanism is realized at an intermediate energy scale, more precisely, at approximately GeV. To prevent heavy right-handed neutrinos from disturbing the mechanism, we evoke a discrete symmetry. Interestingly, as a result, we have standard neutrinos with mass around eV scale and right-handed neutrinos with mass in TeV scale, with the lightest one fulfilling the condition of dark matter. We developed all of these in this study. In addition, we show that the neutral component of may perform unproblematic non-minimal inflation with loss of unitarity.

Gearbox testing is an important and complex task that will become even more challenging as the wind industry moves towards ever-growing turbines. The burden of this task can be decreased by using reduced-scale models with similar characteristics as its industrial-scale equivalent. This work presents a step-by-step procedure to down-scale a gearbox to different fractions of its rated power while preserving its core properties: structural safety and frequency distribution. The parameters to be scaled are sub-divided according to their relation to the system's integrity and dynamic behavior. After performing an overall scaling, it is possible to fine-tune the scaling factors, according to the user precision requirements. Simulations show that it is possible to down-scale a gearbox to 0.01 % of its rated power while having less than 10 % relative deviation on its pitting safety factor. These preliminary results show that wind turbine drivetrain testing can become more affordable by using down-scaled models in a structured manner. We propose to use optical tweezers to probe the Casimir interaction between microspheres inside a liquid medium for geometric aspect ratios far beyond the validity of the widely employed proximity force approximation. This setup has the potential for revealing unprecedented features associated to the non-trivial role of the spherical curvatures. For a proof of concept, we measure femtonewton double layer forces between polystyrene microspheres at distances above $400$ nm by employing very soft optical tweezers, with stiffness of the order of fractions of a fN/nm. As a future application, we propose to tune the Casimir interaction between a metallic and a polystyrene microsphere in saline solution from attraction to repulsion by varying the salt concentration. With those materials, the screened Casimir interaction may have a larger magnitude than the unscreened one. This line of investigation has the potential for bringing together different fields including classical and quantum optics, statistical physics and colloid science, while paving the way for novel quantitative applications of optical tweezers in cell and molecular biology., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report a simple technique for stabilization of a laser frequency at the wings of an atomic resonance. The reference signal used for stabilization issues from interference effects obtained in a low-quality cavity filled with a resonant atomic vapour. For a frequency detuned 2.6 GHz from the
133 Cs D2 6S F = 4 to 6P F’ = 5 transition, the fractional frequency Allan deviation is 10−8 for averaging times of 300 s, corresponding to a frequency deviation of 4 MHz. Adequate choice of the atomic density and of the cell thickness allows locking the laser at detunings larger than 10 GHz. Magnetic interfaces created by the formation of a nanocomposite of ferromagnetic BiFeO
3 nanoparticles of mean size 11 nm and antiferromagnetic network-like nanostructured NiO are studied. The effective radius of the ferromagnetic region is smaller than the actual nanoparticle size, thus confirming the involvement of a large fraction of surface spins in the interfacial magnetism. The exchange coupling between the BiFeO3 nanoparticles and the network-like nanostructured NiO leads to an interfacial blocking phase having an average blocking temperature of about 80 K. The temperature dependent saturation magnetization follows the Bloch law at high (150–300 K) temperature and exponential behaviour in intermediate (25–150 K) and low (5–25 K) temperature regimes. Exchange bias appears below the irreversible temperature of about 300 K, well below the Néel temperature of NiO. The composition dependences of the exchange bias field (HEB ) and the coercivity (HC ) reveal maximum values of HEB = 1550 Oe and HC = 1730 Oe at 5 K and a cooling field of 50 kOe for a BiFeO3 : NiO :: 50 : 50 concentration ratio. The exchange bias field decreases exponentially with increase of the temperature. Strong interfacial coupling due to uncompensated surface spins leads to a remarkable enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy at the BiFeO3 /NiO interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

While fluorescence microscopy has become an essential tool amongst chemists and biologists for the detection of various analyte within cellular environments, non-uniform spatial distribution of sensors within cells often restricts extraction of reliable information on relative abundance of analytes in different subcellular regions. As an alternative to existing sensing methodologies such as ratiometric or FRET imaging, where relative proportion of analyte with respect to the sensor can be obtained within cells, we propose a methodology using spectrally-resolved fluorescence microscopy, via which both the relative abundance of sensor as well as their relative proportion with respect to the analyte can be simultaneously extracted for local subcellular regions. This method is exemplified using a BODIPY sensor, capable of detecting mercury ions within cellular environments, characterized by spectral blue-shift and concurrent enhancement of emission intensity. Spectral emission envelopes collected from sub-microscopic regions allowed us to compare the shift in transition energies as well as integrated emission intensities within various intracellular regions. Construction of a 2D scatter plot using spectral shifts and emission intensities, which depend on the relative amount of analyte with respect to sensor and the approximate local amounts of the probe, respectively, enabled qualitative extraction of relative abundance of analyte in various local regions within a single cell as well as amongst different cells. Although the comparisons remain semi-quantitative, this approach involving analysis of multiple spectral parameters opens up an alternative way to extract spatial distribution of analyte in heterogeneous systems. The proposed method would be especially relevant for fluorescent probes that undergo relatively nominal shift in transition energies compared to their emission bandwidths, which often restricts their usage for quantitative ratiometric imaging in cellular media due to strong cross-talk between energetically separated detection channels.
