With the aim of solving the problem of coal congestion caused by big coal blocks in underground mine scraper conveyors, in this paper we proposed the use of a YOLO-BS (YOLO-Big Size) algorithm to detect the abnormal phenomenon of coal blocks on scraper conveyors. Given the scale of the big coal block targets, the YOLO-BS algorithm replaces the last layer of the YOLOv4 algorithm feature extraction backbone network with the transform module. The YOLO-BS algorithm also deletes the redundant branch which detects small targets in the PAnet module, which reduces the overall number of parameters in the YOLO-BS algorithm. As the up-sampling and down-sampling operations in the PAnet module of the YOLO algorithm can easily cause feature loss, YOLO-BS improves the problem of feature loss and enhances the convergence performance of the model by adding the SimAM space and channel attention mechanism. In addition, to solve the problem of sample imbalance in big coal block data, in this paper, it was shown that the YOLO-BS algorithm selects focal loss as the loss function. In view of the problem that the same lump coal in different locations on the scraper conveyor led to different congestion rates, we conducted research and proposed a formula to calculate the congestion rate. Finally, we collected 12,000 image datasets of coal blocks on the underground scraper conveyor in Daliuta Coal Mine, China, and verified the performance of the method proposed in this paper. The results show that the processing speed of the proposed method can reach 80 fps, and the correct alarm rate can reach 93%. The effective production scheduling of dry bulk ports is a challenging task that demands meticulous planning, task allocation based on customer requirements, as well as strategic route and timing scheduling. Dry bulk ports dedicated to handling commodities like coal and iron ore frequently engage in blending operations as a strategic imperative to gain market competitiveness. The process of blending coal and ore entails the timely arrival of the requisite raw materials at predetermined locations. Simultaneously, it necessitates the coordination of the sequencing of goods entering and departing the port to align with the operational demands associated with material stockpiles. This paper describes and analyzes an operational scheduling problem encountered by one of the largest coal blending sea ports in China. Specifically, a rich constraint programming model is presented to define operation sequences integrating daily inbound and outbound services provided by the port, minimizing the overall operation time. In order to enhance the practicality of the method, a CP-based adaptive simulated annealing local search algorithm has been designed and developed for the optimization problem. The empirical validation of the proposed method is conducted using both real production data and generated experimental data adhering to specific rules. The results conclusively demonstrate the efficacy and feasibility of the proposed method. Coal mines' water inrush is one of the five major disasters that affect the safety of coal mine production. The assessment of coal mines' water inrush is a prerequisite for preventing and controlling coal mines' water inrush. To objectively and effectively evaluate the risk of water inrush in the coal seam roof and overcome the shortage of single assignment methods, two methods, the analytic hierarchy process and the entropy method, are used in this paper to determine each evaluation factor's subjective and objective consequences. Game theory is applied to obtain the combined weights of each influencing factor to make up for the lack of a single assignment method. Taking the roof of Coal Seam No. 7 in mining Areas I and II of Dananhu Coal Mine No. 7 as an example, six primary evaluation indexes are created to control water inrush in the coal seam roof. The comprehensive weights of each index is determined; a vulnerability index evaluation model is established; and the results of the water inrush risk zone in the coal seam roof of Dananhu Coal Mine No. 7 are obtained using the GIS spatial analysis function. The results show that the discriminatory effects of the zoning model have a high accuracy and can provide a reference basis for future coal seam mining control work in this mine. Coal is the main energy source in China. As flat and shallow coal seams are being depleted, adverse coal seams such as inclined and steeply inclined coal seams account for larger proportion of seams that are mined. For these coal seams, instability such as slip and tipping of mining equipment due to the large inclination is a significant challenge for the productive operation of intelligent or smart mines. Therefore, this paper serves to provide some insights into improving their stability. In this paper, research on the anti-tipping and anti-slip technology of shields is carried out on an intelligent working face with a large dip angle. A mechanical model of "support-surrounding rock" was established. Through the analysis of the influence of the self-weight of the support on its stability and through theoretical analysis and field practice, it was found that the critical tipping angle of the support in the free state is 27.8, the critical slip angle is 16, and the support is more prone to slip in the free state; the shields in the middle of the working face are the key area for stability control. Suitable technical measures are taken to ensure the stability of the supports, which provides the management and practical basis for safe and efficient mining in the intelligent working face with a large dip angle. The southern Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, has abundant coalbed methane (CBM) resources. Currently, the Baiyang River development pilot test area (BYR block for short) in the Fukang east block has achieved large-scale CBM development, but the productivity characteristics and its controlling factor are still unclear. Based on the field production data of the BYR block and experimental tests, this paper summarizes the gas and water production characteristics and presents the analysis results of the geological and geochemical responses to the productivity of CBM wells. The productivity of CBM wells in the BYR block was generally characterized as medium-to-low yield. The productivity was jointly controlled by the burial depth, structure condition, thickness and number of co-production coal seams, and hydrogeological conditions. The gas production first increased and then decreased with the increase in the burial depth of the coal seam, and a burial depth between 750 and 1000 m was the most beneficial to increasing the gas production due to the good gas preservation conditions and suitable permeability and stress conditions. The total thickness of the co-production coal seams had a positive effect on the productivity of gas wells, but the productivity was also affected by the number of co-production coal seams and interlayer interference. In the BYR block, the co-production of the nos. 41 and 42 coal seams was the most favorable combination form for CBM drainage. The productivity of CBM wells had a good response to the Na+, K+ and HCO3− concentrations but a poor response to δD-H2O and δ18O-H2O. Based on the concentrations of the main ions and TDSs of the coal seam water, a productivity response index δ* was established, and there was a good positive correlation between the productivity and δ*. In Sichuan Province, China, most coal seams that are mined are steeply inclined; their roadways' surrounding rocks are asymmetric, with non-equilibrium deformations and unstable anchorage structures, thus making major safety hazards highly likely. Using field observations and a universal distinct element code (UDEC) numerical simulation method, this paper analyzed the time-dependent failure of the ventilation roadway of Working Face 1961 of the Zhaojiaba Mine, revealing the preconditions for such damage and a bidirectional deterioration mechanism for the deformation as well as stress of surrounding rocks. Moreover, this paper built an anchorage mechanical model for the thick layer of the roadway roof and proposed a cross-boundary anchor-grouting (CBAG) differential support technique. Calculations proved that the new support was particularly effective in restraining the expansion of tension cracks, thus preventing the slipping and dislocation deformations of rock masses on the curved roof side. The feedback of engineering applications showed that the maximum development depths of cracks in the arc roof and straight inclined roof of the roadway 150 m behind the working face are only 1.5 m and 1.10 m, decreasing by 61.3% and 47.6%, respectively, compared with the primary support. The proposed technology offers an overall thick-layer bearing structure for the surrounding rocks of roadways, effectively restraining the non-equilibrium large deformations of roadways in steeply inclined coal seams. China's total coal production in 2021 exceeded 4.13 billion tons, 52% of the world's total. Coal gangue, a solid waste of coal mining accounts for 15–20% of coal production, when directly discharged on the ground surface as waste heaps, it occupies large areas of land and cause environmental pollution. This paper summarizes the existing gangue backfilling methods, their working principles, efficiency, and application status. The methods that are meeting Middle and Western China's mining demands are discussed in detail. The state-of-the-art technologies that can realize high-efficiency, centralized, and large-scale underground backfilling of coal gangue are analyzed. This paper shows that the industrial implementation of these technologies can increase the current maximum disposal capacity of coal gangue by three times, reaching five million tons per year. The equipment innovation and automation are analyzed, and the environmental effect of coal gangue backfilling is discussed. The Santanghu Basin is a typical low-rank coal-bearing basin in northwest China, with abundant coalbed methane (CBM) resources. However, the understanding of the main controlling factors and reservoir formation models of CBM in low-rank coal is still insufficient, which has restricted the exploration and development of CBM in this region. In this paper, the CBM enrichment controlling factors and enrichment models are analyzed based on the aspects of sedimentary environment, reservoir characteristics, sealing conditions, and hydrogeological conditions after systematically analyzing the geological characteristics of coal measures. The research results indicate that the coal seams of the Xishanyao Formation in the Santanghu Basin are stably developed, with the main macerals being vitrinite and a lower degree of coalification belonging to low-rank coal; the highest content of CBM can reach 7.17 m3/t, and the methane is mainly composed of biogenic gas supplemented by thermogenic gas; the roof lithology of the coal seam is mainly mudstone and siltstone, with good sealing conditions. Finally, two enrichment modes of coalbed methane in slope zones are proposed, namely, the CBM enrichment in the slope zone and the CBM enrichment by fault-hydraulic plugging. In recent years, China has proposed the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, which will significantly alter its existing coal-based energy mix. Since coal is China's primary source of energy and the largest contributor to carbon emissions, coal reduction is an important measure toward carbon neutrality. In order to guarantee the stable development of economy and society in the process of coal reduction, the path and cost of coal reduction need to be studied in depth. Based on coal use in China, this paper examines and measures the stages and costs of coal reduction. It also gives a definition for coal reduction costs for the first time, including economic cost, environment and ecology cost, and health cost, as well as proposes a framework for analyzing the "full cost, full process, and full scenario". We measure the cost in combination with the KAYA formula, and take into account the time value of the cost. Based on the above measurement framework, we calculate the unit coal reduction cost and estimate the coal reduction cost between CNY 454.38 and 827.1 billion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: This paper provides a simulation method for extreme precipitation events in geotechnical slopes (spatio-temporal connections, forecasting, generation, impact analysis, and vulnerability and risk assessment). Our improved methods provide a valuable tool for engineering disaster early warning and contribute to a better understanding of hydrodynamic processes in general. Coal gangue is one of the largest solid wastes in the world. In previous studies, the influence and mechanisms of rainfall infiltration on coal gangue slope stability and possible rain erosion have been studied through theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and modelling, and the results have indicated that discontinuous discrete element methods are the most suitable for determining the erosion mechanism of coal gangue slopes. In this study, we take a Guizhou coal gangue slope as a general case, use three-dimensional Particle Flow Code (PFC3D) as the key method, and combine discrete element fluid–structure coupling technology with optimized erosion shear failure theory to determine the erosion failure mechanism of coal gangue slopes. We investigate a coal gangue slope near the electric power plant in Panzhou City, Guizhou Province (China) as a case study, and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the erosion induced by the corrosion damage mechanism. We use the PFC3D method, combined with optimized rain erosion shear failure theory, for our investigation. The applied methods mainly consider dynamic inversion of the erosion process, as well as the changes in coordination number, porosity, unbalanced force, and energy dissipation. The scour damage type of the studied gully is intermittent fragmentary damage, with the following inferred damage sequence: Center–bottom–top of the slope. The entire erosion damage process can be divided into three stages: catchment–fracture, erosion–accumulation, and piping–penetration failure. In the first stage of erosion, the force chain fracture is the most severe. The maximum kinetic energy reaches 25 MJ and the coordination number decreases from 5.3 to 4.0, whereas the porosity increases from 0.42 to 0.45. Unexpected lateral erosion and expansion occur at 40–60 m (in the central slope) in the y-direction of the slope, the unbalanced force reaches 7500 N, and the peak porosity is increased by 10%. Open-cast coal mining is one of the most often-debated industries in the world. Due to the significant environmental and health issues it causes, many of these sites have been reclaimed over the years, and many scientific publications and research has followed. In this paper, we have tried to assess the trends in recent research performed on reclaimed coal mining sites (RMS) by analyzing the publications visible on Web of Science (WoS) between 2015 and 2020 and dividing the research into six categories. The results show that there is a trend of rapid increase in research that deals with carbon and its pooling, nutrients, vegetation, and microbiology, and a significant decline in research on RMS soil physical properties, whereas other categories have shown an increasing but relatively steady trend. The application of modern technologies is also discussed. On account of the long-term dependence on energy trade and the phenomenon of embodied carbon emissions in interprovincial trade (ECEs-IPT), energy supply bases (ESBs) in the economic integration regions (EIRs) are under unprecedented dual pressure of achieving carbon emissions (CEs) reduction targets and ensuring security and stability of the energy supply. This problem has attracted more and more attention and research by experts and scholars. This paper took Anhui, the coal ESB of the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB), as an example and took the key stage of rapid development of regional economic integration (REI) and accelerated the realization of CEs reduction targets in YREB from 2007 to 2017 as the study period. From the perspectives of regions and industry sectors, we calculated the transfer amount of ECEs-IPT in Anhui among the YREB, analyzed the spatial-temporal evolution pattern of ECEs-IPT, and revealed the industrial characteristics of ECEs-IPT. Then, we classified the industry sectors and proposed the direction of industrial improvement measures. The results showed that, during the decade, the amount of provinces undertaking the net ECEs-IPT outflow from Anhui increased significantly and spatially expanded from only Jiangxi Province to almost all of the YREB. In addition, 39.77% of the net ECEs-IPT outflow of Anhui was concentrated in petroleum processing, coking, and nuclear fuel processing (RefPetraol), metal smelting and rolling processing (MetalSmelt), and electricity and heat production and supply (ElectpowerProd) that trade with Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi. The analytical model and results will provide a useful reference for the global similar coal ESBs, especially the coal ESBs within the EIRs, to formulate improvement measures for regions or even the world to ensure stability of the energy supply and achieve regional CEs reduction targets.

The accurate prediction of coal structure is important to guide the exploration and development of coal reservoirs. Most prediction models are interpreted for a single sensitive coal seam, and the selection of sensitive parameters is correlated with the coal structure, but they ignore the interactions between different attributes. Part of it introduces the concept of the geological strength index (GSI) of coal rocks in order to achieve a multi-element macroscopic description and quantitative characterization of coal structure; however, the determination of coal structure involves some uncertainties among the properties of coal, such as lithology, gas content and tectonic fracture, due to their complex nature. Fuzzy inference systems provide a knowledge discovery process to handle uncertainty. The study shows that a type-2 fuzzy inference system (T2-FIS) with multi-attribute fusion is used to effectively fuse pre-stack and post-stack seismic inversion reservoir parameters and azimuthal seismic attribute parameters in order to produce more accurate prediction results for the Hengling block in the Shanxi area. The fuzzy set rules generated in this paper can provide a more reliable prediction of coal structure in the GSI system. In order to quantitatively study the difference in occurrence content of functional groups in coals with different metamorphic degrees, the samples of long flame coal, coking coal, and anthracite of three different coal ranks were characterized by FTIR and the relative content of various functional groups in different coal ranks was obtained. The semi-quantitative structural parameters were calculated, and the evolution law of the chemical structure of the coal body was given. The results show that with the increase in the metamorphic degree, the substitution degree of hydrogen atoms on the benzene ring in the aromatic group increases with the increase in the vitrinite reflectance. With the increase in coal rank, the content of phenolic hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl, and other active oxygen-containing groups gradually decreased, and the content of ether bonds gradually increased. Methyl content increased rapidly first and then increased slowly, methylene content increased slowly first and then decreased rapidly, and methylene content decreased first and then increased. With the increase in vitrinite reflectance, the OH-π hydrogen bond gradually increases, the content of hydroxyl self-association hydrogen bond first increases and then decreases, the oxygen-hydrogen bond of hydroxyl ether gradually increases, and the ring hydrogen bond first significantly decreases and then slowly increases. The content of the OH-N hydrogen bond is in direct proportion to the content of nitrogen in coal molecules. It can be seen from the semi-quantitative structural parameters that with the increase in coal rank, the aromatic carbon ratio fa, aromatic degree AR and condensation degree DOC increase gradually. With the increase in coal rank, A(CH2)/A(CH3) first decreases and then increases, hydrocarbon generation potential 'A' first increases and then decreases, maturity 'C' first decreases rapidly and then decreases slowly, and factor D gradually decreases. This paper presents the on-site monitoring of a medium–long highway tunnel constructed above a goaf of a multi-layer coal seam, in order to evaluate and maintain safety during operation. The case study of the Tianzimiao medium–long highway tunnel in Shanxi province was conducted above a goaf of a multi-layer coal seam with typical geological and engineering conditions in China, where a total of four coal seams (seam no. 3, 8, 12, and 15) were mined out with a total thickness of up to 11 m. Methods including data collection, engineering geological survey, drilling, geophysical prospecting, testing, and on-site monitoring were adopted, and a geo-mechanical model was established to conduct the research. Stratified monitoring was applied to investigate the individual settlement and deformation of the four layers of the goaf below, and a prediction of the possible deformation in tunnel floor ground was made based on the stratified measurements. The settlement of the tunnel sidewall, the internal stress in the fractured zone of the surrounding rock, and the deformation above the tunnel entrance were also monitored, and the monitoring data were compared with the numerical simulation results for the safety evaluation of the tunnel. The results show that the current tunnel deformation values and trend are both within the safety scope of the evaluation and prediction. The stability evaluation method for the multi-layer goaf used in this paper and the long-term on-site monitoring and timely feedback during operation is helpful to ensure the safe use of the tunnels above the goaves of multi-layer thick coal seams. Long-term erosion and repeated scouring of water significantly affect the technical properties of coals, which are the essential elements that must be considered in evaluating an underground reservoir coal column dam's standing sustainability. In the paper, the coal pillar dam body of the 22 layers of coal in the Shangwan Coal Mine is studied (22 represents No. 2 coal seam), and the water content of this coal pillar dam body is simplified into two types of different water content and dry–wet cycle. Through acoustic emission detection technology and energy dissipation analysis method, the internal failure mechanism of coal water action is analyzed. This study revealed three findings. (1) The crest pressure, strain, and resilient modulus in the coal sample were inversely related to the water content along with the dry–wet cycle number, while the drying–wetting cycle process had a certain time effect on the failure to the sample. (2) As the moisture content and the dry–wet cycle times incremented, three features were shown: first, the breakage pattern is the mainly stretching fracture for the coal specimen; second, the number and absolute value of acoustic emission count peaks decrease; third, the RA-AF probability density plot (RA is the ratio of AE Risetime and Amplitude, and AF is the ratio of AE Count and Duration) corresponds more closely to the large-scale destruction characteristics for the coal samples. (3) A higher quantity of wet and dry cycles results in a smoother energy dissipation curve in the compacted and flexible phases of the crack, indicating that this energy is released earlier. The research results can be applied to the long-term sustainability assessment of the dams of coal columns for underground reservoirs and can also serve as valuable content to the excogitation of water-bearing coal column dams under similar engineering conditions. As unexpected events such as natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and overseas containment have caused inevitable shocks to the energy industrial chain and supply chain, the current global energy crisis is intensifying, and different countries and regions have adopted different strategies according to the characteristics of their own national resource endowments in order to cope with energy security. Maintaining the security of the coal industrial chain and supply chain is a prerequisite for energy security to be effectively ensured, considering the main position of coal in China's energy. Therefore, in the face of multiple uncertain risk factors under today's momentous changes, this paper constructs an industrial coal chain and supply chain resilience evaluation indicator system from the perspective of resilience, based on four representational capabilities of resilience, namely preparedness, absorptive capacity, recovery capacity, and adaptability, in order to profoundly understand and enhance the resilience of the coal industrial chain and supply chain. An integrated method combining Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Prospect Theory and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (Interval Type-2F-PT-TOPSIS) is proposed for evaluating the resilience level of the coal industrial chain and supply chain. In the case of Shaanxi Province in China, it was found that the worst level of resilience of the coal industrial chain and supply chain in Shaanxi Province was in 2018, and the best was in 2021. Finally, based on the evaluation results, recommendations are provided to the key nodes of the industrial chain and supply chain in Shaanxi Province with a view to improving their resilience levels to cope with uncertain risks. As one of the main fossil fuels globally, coal can be enriched with a variety of critical metal elements in specific geological conditions. This paper investigates the mineral compositions and concentrations of major and minor element oxides and trace elements in the No. 9 coal from the Xinyuan mine of the northern Qinshui coalfield, China, and discusses the modes of occurrence and enrichment mechanisms of critical metal elements such as Li, Ga, Th and REY. The mineral compositions of the No. 9 coal are primarily represented by clay minerals and quartz, with a small amount of calcite, siderite, anatase, etc. The major element oxides in the No. 9 coal are dominated by SiO2 and Al2O3. Compared with world hard coal, the No. 9 coal of the Xinyuan mine is rich in Li (CC = 8.00) and Th, slightly enriched with Pb, Sc, Ga, Y, La, Ce, Tb, Dy, Er, Yb and Hg, and depleted in Mn, Co, Ni, Rb, Cs and Tl. The critical metal elements such as Li, Ga, Th and REY that enriched No. 9 coal mainly occur in aluminum silicates. The genetic type of the critical metal elements in the No. 9 coal from the Xinyuan mine is source rock-controlled type. The critical metal minerals and solutions from the source area were transported to the study area by the action of water. As the top emitter of carbon dioxide worldwide, China faces a considerable challenge in reducing carbon emissions to combat global warming. Carbon emissions from coal consumption is the primary source of carbon dioxide emissions in China. The decomposition of the driving factors and the quantification of regions and industries needs further research. Thus, this paper decomposed five driving factors affecting carbon emissions from coal consumption in China, namely, carbon emission intensity, energy structure, energy intensity, economic output, and population scale, by constructing a Kaya-Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (Kaya-LMDI) decomposition model with data on coal consumption in China from 1997 to 2019. It was revealed that the economic output and energy intensity effects are major drivers and inhibitors of carbon emissions from coal consumption in China, respectively. The contribution and impact of these driving factors on carbon emissions from coal consumption were analyzed for different regions and industrial sectors. The results showed that carbon emissions from coal consumption increased by 3211.92 million tons from 1997 to 2019. From a regional perspective, Hebei Province has the most significant impact on carbon emissions from coal consumption due to the effect of economic output. Additionally, the industrial sector had the most pronounced influence on carbon emissions from coal consumption due to the economic output effect. Finally, a series of measures to reduce carbon emissions including controlling the total coal consumption, improving the utilization rate of clean energy, and optimizing the energy structure is proposed based on China's actual development. A reliable numerical simulation method and large-scale in-situ test method for super-thick coal seams are very important to determine the failure range of mining floors, which is often the basis to protect Ordovician limestone water, an important drinking water source for people in North China. This paper takes Yushupo Coal Mine as an example; the explicit–implicit coupling simulation method and the corresponding double scalar elastic–plastic constitutive model were established to predict the failure depth of the floor numerically, and verified by the full section borehole stress–strain in-situ testing method. The results show that the explicit–implicit coupling numerical program and the double scalar elastoplastic constitutive model are suitable for predicting the floor failure depth under the condition of extra-thick coal seams. In this condition, the overburden moves violently, resulting in a loading–unloading–reloading process with large stress variation amplitude in the mining floor, which leads to serious rock failure compared with that of medium-thick coal seam conditions. In Yushupo 5105 working face, the floor failure starts to develop from 9.3–24.2 m ahead of the coal wall of working face, and the failure depth no longer increases after 35 m behind the coal wall, with the maximum failure depth of 28 m; the envelope line of the floor failure depth presents an inverted saddle distribution. Archeological discoveries have identified China as one of the first countries in the world to use jet. However, many differences are evident between the jet currently found in existing mines and the archaeological discoveries of cultural relics in terms of texture and quality according to the definition of organic gem jet in gemology. This paper reports the results of microscopic analysis and coal quality analysis of the coal and jet samples from coal seams in Fushun Open-pit Mine and Datong Coalfield. The findings reveal that the physical and chemical composition of coal in different mining areas differs markedly. However, the differences between jet and coal in both mining areas are similar; that is, jet has lighter density and greater hardness (2–4) compared to coal, as well as elasticity (engravability), and both jet and coal occur in the (rock slurry) hydrothermal environment. Lastly, the analysis shows that the formation of jet depends on rubber-like hydrocarbon coal with a high degree of corruption in a sedimentary environment under the vulcanization of a hydrothermal, high-sulfur environment. Coal is a complex, porous medium with pore structures of various sizes. Therefore, it is difficult to accurately describe the characteristics of pore structure by using the traditional geometry method. The results from the present investigation suggest that the porous media system of the coal reservoir has obvious fractal characteristics at different scales. To study the complexity of the pores in the coal reservoir, 27 coal samples from Guizhou, SW China were studied. The fractal dimensions of coal pores were calculated, and the fractal dimension of a pore in a coal reservoir can be classified into two types: percolation and diffusion. The comprehensive fractal dimension can be obtained using the weighted summation method and the pore volume fraction of different fractal segments as the weight. The percolation fractal dimensions (Dp) of coal samples are between 2.88 and 3.12, the diffusion fractal dimensions (Dd) are between 3.57 and 3.84, and the comprehensive fractal dimensions (Dt) are between 3.05 and 3.63. The Dd values of all coal samples are all larger than the Dp values, which indicates that the random distribution and complexity of diffusion pores in coal are stronger than those of the percolation pores. The percolation fractal dimension decreases as the maturity degree increases, whereas the diffusion and comprehensive fractal dimensions increase. The diffusion pore volume fraction and total pore volume are all highly correlated with the comprehensive and diffusion fractal dimensions, respectively. The correlation between the comprehensive fractal dimension, diffusion pore volume fraction, and coal reservoir porosity is negative exponential, whereas the correlation between the total pore volume and coal reservoir porosity is positive linear. In comparison with the percolation and diffusion fractal dimensions, the comprehensive fractal dimension is better suited for characterizing the permeability of coal reservoirs. China's green credit has mostly been invested in new energy areas with positive environmental externalities in recent years, while coal power enterprises have been neglected. This paper constructs a tripartite evolutionary game model among government, coal power enterprises, and banks to clarify the key factors and mechanisms for coal power enterprises undergoing green transformation. The research results show that: Firstly, to realize the spontaneous green transformation of coal power enterprises, spontaneous profitability must be achieved before the removal of policy incentives, which is reflected in the continuous increase in electricity price, carbon emission trading price, and decrease in green transformation cost. Secondly, the green credit adjustment factor cannot determine whether a company chooses to undertake green transition, but it provides a valuable window of green transition for companies. When the relative benefits of green transformation projects are greater than the relative costs, coal power enterprises will undergo green transformation spontaneously. Thirdly, lower green credit interest rates are not better. An optimal green credit interest rate exists, that allows coal power enterprises to obtain the longest transition window in which to achieve spontaneous profitability for green transition projects. As a widely-used method of digging roadways in China, gob-side entry driving features specific advantages, such as a high recovery rate and good isolation effects. However, under the condition of hard overburden, the excessive bearing pressure of small coal pillars will easily cause serious internal damage in the coal and the run-through of the plastic zone, leading to harmful gas leakage in the goaf. Therefore, based on the engineering background of small coal pillars in the 18506 working face of Xiqu Coal Mine, this paper comprehensively adopts theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, industrial tests, and other methods, analyzes the evolution mechanism of isolated bearing and plastic fracture areas of small coal pillar under hard overburden, studies the influence law of hard overburden cutting parameters on the isolation and stability of small coal pillars, and puts forward the technology of actively cutting the top to weaken the stress concentration of coal pillars under hard overburden. With the reasonable cutting parameters determined, the controllable mechanism of hydraulic fracturing cutting under hard overburden further revealed, and the hydraulic fracturing cutting technology with "controllable cutting orientation of hydraulic fracturing with local stress field intervention" formed as the basic core, the stress situation on the roof is improved, realizing the stability control of the coal pillars for the roadway protection, and avoiding gas leakage and other disasters caused by small coal pillar destruction. Coal is one of the fundamental fossil energy supporting the world's economy. The synergistic development between efficient coal mining and ecological environment protection is the inevitable requirement for the preservation of global harmony. As the world's largest coal producer, China has conducted a strategic shift from east to west in terms of the exploitation of its energy resources, posing a serious threat to the fragile ecological environment of the western region. In particular, the surface subsidence caused by coal mining is the root of the ecological deteriotation and the destruction of ground structures. However, it is difficult to reveal the law of large-scale surface subsidence in western mining areas merely by conventional measurement methods such as leveling, on account of the high intensity of coal seam mining, the weakness of the lithology of overlying rock and the large thickness of wind-blown sand strata. In view of this, small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) technology was used in this study to obtain the time series of surface vertical displacement during the whole mining process of the 2401 working face in the Yingpanhao coal mine, Inner Mongolia. Based on the deformation data, the dynamic evolution characteristics of surface subsidence under high intensity mining in the western mining area were analyzed exhaustively. It was found that the surface subsidence is characterized by an extensive coverage range (48.52 km2) with minimal ground settlement (250 mm) in the study area. Meanwhile, the boundary shape of the subsidence basin followed a "circular-parallelogram-trapezoid" changeable process and the coverage area of the basin experienced three stages: a linear increasing period, a temporary stagnation period, and a re-expansion period. Furthermore, there existed an abnormal uplift phenomenon on the east side of the open-off cut in the 2401 working face. Combined with the structure of overlying strata, this paper carried out a preliminary analysis on the reasons of the abovementioned phenomenon. With the exploitation of the lower coal seams of the Taiyuan Formation, the Ordovician limestone water inrush in the floor became more serious. This paper considers the 162 and 163 mining areas of the Jiangzhuang Coal Mine, in Shandong Province, China. A comprehensive analysis of the geological and hydrogeological conditions of the mining area revealed the following: water pressure and water richness provide the water source and power for the floor water inrush; the thickness of the effective aquifer and the ratio of brittle rock can restrain floor water inrush; fault structures provide water inrush channels; and mining damage is an artificial interference and increases the probability of water inrush. Therefore, six factors: the water pressure of the Ordovician limestone aquifer, water abundance of the Ordovician limestone aquifer, equivalent thickness of effective aquifuge, brittle rock ratio, fracture structure, and mining destruction were selected as the influencing factors on water penetration of the bottom plate, and drawing software was used to establish a mining area map of related factors. The improved fuzzy hierarchical analysis method is more suitable for analyzing multi-objective decisions than the traditional hierarchical analysis method, but the weighting of results is influenced by expert experience. The entropy weight method is data-driven, and the empowerment results are objective. The improved fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight method were coupled together, to determine the weight of each factor. The new method is not only data driven, but also takes empirical experience into consideration, making the empowerment results more reasonable. An evaluation of coal floor water inrush was established using MapGIS10.6, which is a general tool-type geographic information system software developed by the China University of Geosciences; and the risk of Ordovician limestone water inrush in the floor of the study area was classified into four levels: dangerous, relatively dangerous, relatively safe, and safe. The whole evaluation process is simple, but the evaluation results have practical importance and are very efficient, providing theoretical support for coal mine water prevention and control engineering. This paper presents the roof fall collapse of a coal mine that occurred, causing 20 deaths and 1 injury, in Qinghai Province, China, on 14 August 2021. After the primary investigation of this incident and a brief description of the rescue action undertaken, this report discussed the possible reasons behind this disaster. The fissure water and damaged rock mass are the dominant triggering factors of this incident. Little concern for risk assessment and monitoring systems is one of the main man-made mistakes. Consequently, the reflections and suggestions are put forward to reduce or prevent the occurrence of roof fall incidents in coal mines. The noteworthy actions that are necessary in coal mine projects are conducting risk assessments based on geological condition and building proper support systems for coal mines considering he situation in situ. The environmental pollution and high energy consumption caused by the coal-dominated energy structure in China have been the focus of attention for a long time. The co-firing of biomass with coal can save coal resources and realize effective utilization of biomass. In this paper, brewery wastewater sludge (SD) and bituminous coal (BC) were blended for an experimental study which aimed to provide basic experimental data and operational guidance as a reference for practical application in power plants. The co-firing characteristics of sludge and bituminous coal were studied. The results show that the burnout temperature and ignition temperature decrease with an increase in the sludge blending ratio. The Comprehensive Combustion Index (CCI) first rises, then decreases, reaching a maximum at about 15%. Compared with the atmosphere with 79% N2/21% O2, under the 79% CO2/21% O2 atmosphere, ignition is delayed and the burnout temperature is higher. Under an O2/CO2 atmosphere, as the O2 concentration improves, the thermo-gravimetric (TG) curve shifts to the low-temperature region, the burnout temperature drops significantly, and the comprehensive combustion characteristics are improved. With an increment of the heating rate, the curve of TG analysis shifts to the high-temperature region and the CCI increases. Deep coalbed methane (DCBM) reservoirs hold exceptional potential for diversifying energy sources. The Ordos Basin has attracted much attention due to its enormous resource reserves of DCBM. This work focuses on the Jiaxian area of the Ordos basin, and the multi-factor quantitative evaluation method on the sealing of cap rocks is established. The abundant geologic and reservoir information is synthesized to explore variable factors affecting the gas content. Results indicate that the sealing capacity of the coal seam roof in the Jiaxian area, with a mean sealing index of 3.12, surpasses the floor's sealing capacity by 13.87%, which averages 2.74. The sealing of the coal seam roof has a more positive impact on the enrichment of coalbed methane (CBM). In addition, the conditions for preserving gas would be boosted as coal seam thickness increased, leading to enhanced gas content in coal seams. The CH4 content increases by an average of ~2.38 m3/t as coal seam thickness increases with the interval of 1 m. The increasing burial depth represents the incremental maturity of organic matter and the gas generation ability in coal seams, which contributes to improving the gas content in coal seams. There is a positive correlation between the degree of coal fragmentation and the gas content of the coal seam to a certain extent. The porosity characteristics of coal seams serve as a pivotal factor in assessing the development potential of coalbed methane (CBM) resources, significantly influencing the adsorption and permeability capabilities of coal reservoirs, as well as the accumulation, entrapment, and preservation of CBM. In this study, we focused on the coal seams of the Xishanyao Formation in the western part of the southern Junggar Basin (NW China). By leveraging the complementarity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), low-temperature liquid nitrogen experiments, and high-pressure mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) in spatial exploration range and precision, we conducted a comprehensive analysis to achieve a fine description of porosity characteristics. Furthermore, we explored the coal petrology factors controlling the pore characteristics of the Xishanyao Formation, aiming to provide geological evidence for the selection of favorable areas and the development potential evaluation of CBM in the study area. The results indicate the following: (1) The total pore volume of the coal samples is 6.318 × 10−3 cm3/g on average, and the micropore volume accounts for a relatively high proportion (averaging 44.17%), followed by the fine pores (averaging 39.41%). The average porosity is approximately 3.87%, indicating good gas storage and connectivity of the coal seams, albeit with some heterogeneity. The coal reservoir is dominated by micropores and fine pores with diameters less than 100 nm, and the pore structure is characterized by low pore volume and high pore area. (2) The pore structure is influenced by both the coalification degree and the coal maceral. Within the range of low coalification, porosity increases with the increase in coalification degree. Building upon this, an increase in the vitrinite content promotes the development of micropores and fine pores, while an increase in the inertinite content promotes the development of meso–macropores. Due to the importance of the wide occurrence of thick coal seams for Chinese coal resources, the origins of these seams have received considerable attention. Using the Early Cretaceous No. 5 coal seam with a thickness of 16.8 m in Inner Mongolia as a case study, this paper presents a systematic investigation of the coal petrology, geochemistry, and palynology of 19 coal samples to explain the origin and evolution of peat accumulation. The results indicate that the No. 5 coal seam is generally characterized by low rank (lignite), dominant huminite (average = 82.3%), intermediate ash yield (average = 16.03%), and sulfur content (average = 1.12%). The proportion of spores generally increases from the bottom to the top of the coal seam, whereas the proportion of pollen decreases. The vegetation in the coal seam is dominated by gymnosperms at the bottom and by ferns at the top. The paleographic precursor peat was most likely accumulated in the lakeshore where herbaceous and bushy helophytes were dominant. The total sulfur content was positively related to the huminite content. The sulfur content was possibly derived from bacterial action with sulfur brought in via marine incursions. Three overall declining-increasing values of carbon isotopes within the No. 5 coal seam possibly indicated three general cooling trends during peat accumulation. The environment of peat accumulation included three cycles, including one drying-wetting-drying in the bottom part and two drying-upwards cycles in the upper part. These cycles of the peat-accumulation environment could likely be ascribed to climate change because of their good agreement with humidity signals from plant types at that stage. Cadmium is considered an important toxicant of major environmental and occupational concern. It can contaminate water, soil, and the atmosphere through coal mining, beneficiation, combustion, etc. This paper is based on the published literature, especially those data reported during the recent 10 years, including 2999 individual samples from 116 coalfields or mines in 26 provinces in China. The arithmetic mean of cadmium in Chinese coals is 0.43 µg/g. Taking the coal reserves into consideration, the average value of cadmium in coal is estimated as 0.28 µg/g. Cadmium is mostly enriched in the Southern coal-distribution area during the Late Permian. Furthermore, cadmium is highly enriched in Hunan and Chongqing. The modes of occurrence of cadmium in Chinese coals are quite complex. Cadmium in Chinese coals has been found in sulfides, organic matter, silicate minerals, and other minerals. A marine environment may be the most significant factor that influences the cadmium accumulation in coal from the Southern coal-distribution area during the Late Permian. This paper presents the mineralogical and geochemical compositions of coal benches and non-coal (carbonaceous rock benches, parting, roof and floor) samples from the No. 1 Coal in the Longtan Formation of the Permian-Lopingian epoch from the Shugentian Coalfield, eastern Yunnan Province, southwestern China. The coal is rich in Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf, which were derived from the Kangdian Upland with the dominant compositions of the Emeishan basalt. The minerals identified in the samples include mixed-layer illite-smectite, kaolinite, quartz, siderite, and minor calcite, pyrite, anatase and ankerite. Albite and chamosite occur in the roof and floor samples. The parting sample (SGT1-2p) is characterized by abundant siderite (64.9%) and calcite (20.1%), and one carbonaceous rock sample SGT1-11 contained a large amount of pyrite (26.1%). Four factors were responsible for the geochemical and mineralogical compositions in the samples; namely, the terrigenous detrital materials transported from the Kangdian Upland, direct volcanic ash inputs, multi-stage inputs of hydrothermal fluids, and marine influences. Coal gangue is a byproduct of coal mining and processing, and according to incomplete statistics, China has amassed a substantial coal gangue stockpile exceeding 2600 large mountains, which poses a serious threat to the ecological environment. Utilizing gangue as a coarse aggregate to produce gangue concrete (GC) presents a promising avenue for addressing the disposal of coal gangue; however, gangue concrete presents several challenges that need to be tackled, such as low strength and poor resistance to repeated loads. In this study, polypropylene fibers (PPFs) were incorporated into gangue concrete to enhance its utilization rate. Uniaxial compressive and repeated loading experiments were then conducted to investigate the uniaxial strength and fatigue properties of polypropylene fiber-reinforced gangue concrete (PGC) with varying gangue substitution rates (20%, 40%, and 60%) and different polypropylene fiber admixtures (0, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%). The findings indicate that incorporating gangue at a substitution rate of 40% could notably enhance the uniaxial compressive strength of PGC, resulting in a maximum increase of 19.4%. In the repeated loading experiments, the ductility of PGC was enhanced with the incorporation of PPFs, resulting in a reduction of 33.76% in the damage factor and 19.42% in residual strain for PGC-40-0.2 compared to PGC-40-0. A PPF content of 0.2% was found to be optimal for enhancing the fatigue performance of PGC. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) testing proved the improvement effect of polypropylene fiber on gangue concrete from a microscopic perspective. The water yield of aquifers increases the risk of water inflow, threatens the safe production of coal mines, and even causes geological disasters and construction hazards. To predict water yield quickly and accurately, multiple composite factors are used to invert unit water inflow rates to judge water yield grade. Taking the typical representative of north China-type coal fields as an example, six factors are selected: aquifer thickness, the radius of influence, normalized drawdown, permeability coefficient, the core rate of drilling holes, and the proportion of clay thickness to the thickness of the lower group. The whale optimization algorithm (WOA)–convolutional neural network (CNN)–support vector machine (SVM) model is established with the unit water inflow rate as the forecast target, and different models are selected for comparison. The water yield zoning map is obtained by bringing the borehole data into the model for prediction. The findings indicate that the root mean square error and average absolute error of the composite predictive model models are 0.0318 and 0.0268, respectively, and the model outperforms alternative models. The wettability of coal is an important factor influencing hydraulic stimulation. Field-trial data has proven that high-pressure N2 injection plays a positive role in increasing the coalbed methane (CBM) production rate. For the purpose of investigating the mechanism by which N2 promotes the gas rate, multiple experiments were conducted sequentially on the wettability of anthracite under different N2 pressures. Testing of the coal surface contact angle was conducted under 0.1–8 MPa nitrogen pressure using a newly built contact angle measuring device. The coal samples were collected from the Xinjing Coal Mine in the Qinshui Basin, China. The test results revealed that the contact angle increased with increasing N2 pressure. That is, the contact angle was 77.9° at an N2 pressure of 0.1 MPa and gradually increased to 101.4° at an infinite N2 pressure. In contrast, the capillary pressure decreased with an increasing N2 pressure, from 0.298 MPa to −0.281 MPa. The relationship between contact angle and N2 pressure indicated that the wettability was reversed at a N2 pressure of 5.26 MPa, with a contact angle of 90° and a capillary pressure of 0 MPa. The capillary pressure reversed to a negative value as the N2 pressure increased. At the microlevel, a high N2 pressure increases the surface roughness of coal, which improves the ability of the coal matrix to adsorb N2, forming the gas barrier that hinders the intrusion of water into the pores of the coal matrix. The results of this study provide laboratory evidence that high-pressure N2 injection can prevent water contamination and reduce the capillary pressure, thus benefiting coalbed methane production. CO2 injection in coal seams, which is a significant initiative to mitigate environmental problems caused by greenhouse gases, often leads a sequence of changes in the physical properties of coal reservoirs. To look into how the pore structure changes in the process of CO2 sequestration, we selected fresh coal from Huoerxinhe coal mine in China as the object. Then, acid treatment and SC-CO2 extraction were used to dissolve Organic and inorganic components in coal. Thus, by using SEM, LTGA-N2 apparatus and XRD, the characteristics of pore parameter and fractal dimension variation were discussed. The research results show that, the APS of samples THF, HCL-HF and Y-C increase, while the total PV decreases and the pore connectivity deteriorates. The pore connectivity of Samples THF and HCL-HF is improved (THF-C, HCL-HF-C), but the total pore volume continuously reduces. In addition, solvents treatment and SC-CO2 extraction mainly act on the microporous fraction. After solvents pretreatment, the changes in the pore size distribution curves are mainly manifested in the reduction of number of micropores, especially in the micropores around 3–4 nm. There is a small increase in micropores for samples Y-C and HCL-HF-C, with the pore size mainly concentrated around 4 nm, while the pores of the sample THF-C mainly show an increase within the scope of 3–16 nm. Generally, solvent pretreatment and SC-CO2 extraction help to simplify pore structure. However, the sample HCL-HF-C shows opposite change characteristics. In a short period of time, the larger pore fractal dimension, the less beneficial it is to the flow of CO2, while pore fractal dimension becomes progressively less useful in assessing pore connectivity with increasing time. The Permian Longtan Formation in the Songzao coalfield, Southwest China, has abundant coalbed methane (CBM) stored in high-rank coals. However, few studies have been performed on the mechanism underlying the differences in CBM gas content in high-rank coal. This study focuses on the characterization of coal geochemical, reservoir physical, and gas-bearing properties in the coal seams M6, M7, M8, and M12 based on the CBM wells and coal exploration boreholes, discusses the effects of depositional environment, tectono-thermal evolution, and regional geological structure associated with CBM, and identifies major geological constraints on the gas-bearing properties in high-rank coal. The results show that high-rank coals are characterized by high TOC contents (31.49~51.32 wt%), high Tmax and R0 values (averaging 539 °C and 2.17%), low HI values (averaging 15.21 mg of HC/g TOC), high porosity and low permeability, and high gas-bearing contents, indicating a post-thermal maturity and a good CBM production potential. Changes in the shallow bay–tidal flat–lagoon environment triggered coal formation and provided the material basis for CBM generation. Multistage tectono-thermal evolution caused by the Emeishan mantle plume activity guaranteed the temperature and time for overmaturation and thermal metamorphism and added massive pyrolytic CBM, which improved the gas production potential. Underground coal fires can increase surface temperature, cause surface cracks and collapse, and release poisonous and harmful gases, which significantly harm the ecological environment and humans. Traditional methods of extracting coal fires, such as global threshold, K-mean and active contour model, usually produce many false alarms. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved active contour model by introducing the distinguishing energies of coal fires and others into the traditional active contour model. Taking Urumqi, Xinjiang, China as the research area, coal fires are detected from Landsat-8 satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data. The results show that the proposed method can eliminate many false alarms compared with some traditional methods, and achieve detection of small-area coal fires by referring field survey data. More importantly, the results obtained from UAV data can help identify not only burning coal fires but also potential underground coal fires. Aiming at the problem of the low reuse rate of mine water due to the high content of heavy metals in mine water, in this research, the microcharacterization means of EDX, XRD, BET, SEM, and FT-IR were used to characterize the nonstick coal in a mine in western China. The effects of solid–liquid ratio, solution pH, solution temperature, adsorption time, and initial concentration of the solution on the adsorption of Fe(II) by the nonstick coal were analyzed. The adsorption performance of nonstick coal on adsorbed Fe(II) was analyzed under different influencing factors. The results showed that the adsorption capacity and unit removal rate of the coal samples gradually decreased with the increase in the solid–liquid ratio; the adsorption amount increased with the increase in pH in an "S" shape, and the adsorption effect was better in the range of pH = 5~7; and the adsorption amount increased linearly with the temperature. The quasi-secondary kinetic model and Langmuir model could fit the adsorption kinetic curve and isothermal adsorption curve better, which indicated that the adsorption of Fe(II) by the nonstick coal was dominated by the chemical adsorption of the monomolecular layer. The quantitative analysis of the FT-IR results showed that the adsorption of Fe(II) was mainly by complexation with -OH detached from the coal samples to produce precipitation. This study aims to elucidate the mechanism by which the ultrasonic loading of metal affects the extraction of small molecular phase substances (low molecular compounds) in tar-rich coal. Tar-rich coal samples were collected from the Huangling mining area in the southeastern Ordos Basin, China. The coal, the leaching solution of the coal, the extraction products, and the extraction residual coal samples with different metal ions loaded by ultrasound were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, pH detection, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and an X-ray diffractometer. The obtained results indicated that the ultrasonic loading of coal samples with different metal ions (Mn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+) promoted the extraction of small molecular phase substances in coal and increased the proportion of extracted aliphatic hydrocarbons, alkylbenzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and other compounds. The extraction rate of Mn2+ was the highest. Compared with the control group, the extraction rate was increased by 212%. After the ultrasonic loading of metal ions, the physical structure of the coal was loose and the contact area of the solvent increased; the degree of branching and the hydrogen enrichment of the residual coal decreased, the aromaticity increased, the interlayer spacing and stacking layers decreased, and the stacking degree and ductility increased. Metal ions exchanged with hydrogen ions in the coal molecules. At the same time, the metal ions were adsorbed in the coal molecules and effectively combined with free electrons in the coal molecules to catalyze; thus, the extraction effect of the small molecular phase of tar-rich coal was improved. Deep low-rank coalbed methane (CBM) resources are numerous and widely distributed in China, although their exploration remains in its infancy. In this work, gas adsorption (N2/CO2), mercury intrusion porosimetry, and 3D CT reconstruction were performed on five coal samples of deep and shallow low-rank coal from northeast China to analyze their pore structure. The impact of the features in the pore structure at full scale on the capacity for methane adsorption and seepage is discussed. The results indicate that there are significant differences between deep low-rank coal and shallow low-rank coal in terms of porosity, permeability, composition, and adsorption capacity. The full-scale pore distribution was dispersed over a broad range and exhibited a multi-peak distribution, with the majority of the peak concentrations occurring between 0.45–0.7 nm and 3–4 nm. Mesopores are prevalent in shallow coal rock, whereas micropores are the most numerous in deep coal rock. The primary contributors to the specific surface area of both deep and superficial coal rock are micropores. Three-dimensional CT reconstruction can characterize pores with pore size greater than 1 μm, while the dominating equivalent pore diameters (Deq) range from 1 to 10 μm. More mini-scale pores and fissures are observed in deep coal rock, while shallow coal rock processes greater total and connection porosity. Multifractal features are prevalent in the fractal qualities of all the numbered samples. An enhancement in pore structure heterogeneity occurs with increasing pore size. The pore structure of deep coal rock is more heterogeneous. Furthermore, methane adsorption capacity is favorably connected with D1 (0.4 nm < pore diameter ≤ 2 nm), D2 (2 nm < pore diameter ≤ 5 nm), micropore volume, and specific surface area and negatively correlated with D3 (5 nm < pore diameter ≤ 50 nm), showing that methane adsorption capability is primarily controlled by micropores and mesopores. Methane seepage capacity is favorably connected with the pore volume and connected porosity of macropores and negatively correlated with D4 (pore diameter > 50 nm), indicating that the macropores are the primary factor influencing methane seepage capacity. Silicic, mafic and alkali intra-seam tonsteins have been known from SW China for a number of years. This paper reports on the geochemical compositions of coals and tonsteins from three seam sections of the Songzao Coalfield, SW China, and evaluates the geological factors responsible for the chemical characteristics of the coal seams, with emphasis on the influence from different types of volcanic ashes. The roof and floor samples of the Songzao coal seams mostly have high TiO2 contents, consistent with a high TiO2 content in the detrital sediment input from the source region, namely mafic basalts from the Kangdian Upland on the western margin of the coal basin. The coals from the Songzao Coalfield generally have high ash yields and are highly enriched in trace elements including Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, rare earth elements (REE), Y, Hg and Se; some variation occurs among different seam sections due to input of geochemically different volcanic ash materials. The geochemistry of the Songzao coals has also been affected by the adjacent tonstein/K-bentonite bands. The relatively immobile elements that are enriched in the altered volcanic ashes also tend to be enriched in the adjacent coal plies, possibly due to leaching by groundwaters. The coals near the alkali tonstein bands in the Tonghua and Yuyang sections of the Songzao Coalfield are mostly high in Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, Th, U, REE and Y. Coal samples overlying the mafic K-bentonite in the Tonghua section are high in V, Cr, Zn and Cu. The Datong coal, which has neither visible tonstein layers nor obvious volcanogenic minerals, has high TiO2, V, Cr, Ni, Cu and Zn concentrations in the intervals between the coal plies affected by mafic and alkaline volcanic ashes. This is consistent with the suggestion that a common source material was supplied to the coal basin, derived from the erosion of mafic basaltic rocks of the Kangdian Upland. Although the Songzao coal is generally a high-sulfur coal, most of the chalcophile trace elements show either poor or negative correlations with total iron sulfide contents. The absence of traditional pyrite-metal associations may reflect wide variations in the concentrations of these elements in individual pyrite/marcasite components, or simply poor retention of these elements in the pyrite/marcasite of the relevant coals. China faces the problem of depletion of its coal resources, and a large number of mines are becoming aged mines. Demand for coal, however, still increases due to the growth of China's economy. Energy shortage might restrict the sustainability of China's national economy. As one contribution to a solution, this paper proposes the innovative exploitation method of solid backfill coal mining (SBCM) technology to exploit parts of pillar-blocked (residual coal pillar resources under industrial square, RCPRIS) that protect industrial facilities. Thus, blocked coal resources may be converted into mineable reserves that improve the recovery ratio of mine resources. Also, waste would be removed from the surface reducing hazards of environmental pollution. Based on the case of the Baishan Coal Mine in Anhui, China, numerical simulation is used to study the size of shaft-protecting coal pillars (SPCP) required at different backfill ratios. Results show that the disturbance to a shaft caused by exploitation decreases with the increase of the backfill ratio. When using SBCM to exploit RCPRIS under the condition of 80% backfill ratio, compared with the caving method, a lot of pillar-blocked coal resources would be freed. Coal gangue (CG) represents a huge amount of industrial solid waste in China, and usually is used as a coarse aggregate to produce low-strength coal-gangue-based concrete. In this paper, in order to prove the possibility to obtain a higher-strength concrete with a higher CG utilization rate, reactive powder concrete (RPC) with coal gangue as a sand replacement at different replacement ratios was studied. RPC samples were prepared by replacing natural river sand (RS) with CG sand at different CG/RS weight ratios from 0–100% at intervals of 25%. Mechanical tests were carried out, and the microstructure features of RPC samples at 28 days were characterized. The test results showed that strong back shrinkage of strength existed. On days 7 and 14, the flexural strengths of samples with CG/RS replacement ratios of 0–75% fluctuated around the mean value. Strengths of samples with a CG/RS replacement ratio of 100% dropped off. However, on day 28, the flexural strengths of samples with CG were all lower than the strengths of samples on days 7 and 14. The flexural strengths and compressive strengths of the RPC with a CG/RS replacement ratio of 100% on day 14 were 14.09 MPa and 37.03 MPa, respectively, which decreased to 6.42 MPa and 28.44 MPa, respectively, on day 28. Compared with natural river sand, CG sand reduced the working performance, compressive strength, and flexural strength of RPC. Microscopic analysis showed that on day 28, increasing the CG replacement ratio could inhibit cement hydration, weaken the interface transition zone, and lead to the degradation of the RPC's performance. The mining environment of thin coal seam working faces is generally harsh, the labor intensity is high, and the production efficiency is low. Previous studies have shown that thin coal seam mining finds it difficult to follow machines, does not have complete sets of equipment, has a low degree of automation, and has difficult system co-control, which easily causes production safety accidents. In order to effectively solve the problems existing in thin coal seam mining, Binhu Coal Mine has established intelligent fully mechanized mining and actively explored automatic coal cutting, automatic support following, and intelligent control. The combination of an SAC electro-hydraulic control system and SAP pumping station control system has been applied in 16,108 intelligent fully mechanized coal mining faces, which realizes the automatic following of underground support and the control of adjacent support, partition support, and group operation; the automatic coal cutting of the shearer is realized by editing the automatic coal-cutting state of the shearer and adjusting the automatic parameters. A centralized control center is set up, which realizes the remote control and one-button start–stop of working face equipment. Through a comparative analysis of 16,108 intelligent fully mechanized mining faces and traditional fully mechanized mining faces, it is found that intelligent fully mechanized mining faces have obvious advantages in terms of equipment maintenance, equipment operation mode, and working face efficiency, which improve the equipment and technical mining level of thin coal seam. Low-rank coal accounts for over half of China's proven coal reserves. The possibility of coal and gas outbursts in low-rank coal is higher, especially in the m·agmatic thermal evolution area. The complexity of coal's molecular structure is one of the reasons for problems during the process of mining operations. Different analysis techniques, including XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, were used to obtain the molecular characteristics of magmatic thermal evolution coal samples and normal coal samples, so that a comparative study could be carried out to investigate the influence of the magmatic thermal evolution effect on the molecular structure of low-rank coal. The ranges of the aromatic interlayer spacing (d002), average stacking heights (Lc) and stacking layer number (Nave) of the thermally evolved coal samples are 3.41–3.51 Å, 22.76–27.02 Å, and 6.68–7.70, respectively. The ranges of the full width at half maximum ratio (FD1/FG) and the peak integral intensity ratio (ID1/IG) are 2.16–2.19 and 1.55–1.84, respectively. Compared with the normal coal samples, those affected by magmatic thermal evolution have smaller d002, ID1/IG, and FD1/FG values, but larger Lc values. The results indicate that the thermally evolved coal samples have more ordered structures and more developed microcrystalline structure sizes than normal coal samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal seam pre-drainage technology is widely used to prevent and control gas in China's high-gas coal seams, and upward drilling is a safe and reliable technology. Using the Luling Coal Mine as the study location, according to the actual situation of the site, a layer-through drilling process was proposed. Relying on a cross-layer extraction borehole, coal seam water injection efficiency extraction and high-efficiency water injection dust prevention can be performed in the later stage of borehole extraction, enabling one-hole multi-purpose and "gas-powder" integrated prevention and control. In order to study the "stress-seepage" coupling characteristics of the coal around the borehole, a numerical simulation of the coal seam water injection process was conducted. Based on the simulation results, a field test of water injection in coal seam upward drilling was performed. The field monitoring data show that the water injection and water content of the coal seam were increased by about 3.07 m3 and 0.69%, respectively, compared with the traditional water injection process. The Tarim Basin, a significant region of coal-derived gas generation in China, has widely dispersed coal measure source rocks, especially in the Kuqa Depression. The typical coal measure strata from the Kuqa River and Kapushaliang River sections in the Kuqa Depression were systematically sampled. According to a conventional geochemical analysis (including materials and lithology), a total of 25 typical coal measure source rock samples were chosen for chromatography and chromatography–mass spectrometry examination. It was demonstrated that there were significant discrepancies in the coal source rock samples, particularly the coal rock from the Kuqa River section and the Kapushaliang River section. The specific performance of the Kuqa River section was characterized by a high Pr/Ph ratio (up to 9.29), a low gammacerane ratio, a low abundance of tricyclic terpane, and an "L"-type distribution of regular steranes, all of which are consistent with the properties of humic coal found in freshwater lakes that have undergone partial oxidation. The Kapushaliang River section, by contrast, exhibited a low Pr/Ph ratio (<1.0), a high gammacerane ratio, a concentration of tricyclic terpane comparable to that of hopane, and a distribution of regular steranes in a "V" shape, all of which indicate a strongly reduced saline water environment. Additionally, the degree of thermal evolution is not the key factor resulting in the above biomarker diversity within the CSRs, which was supported by the poor correlation between the maturity parameters (Ro%, Tmax °C), the sedimentary environment-related parameters (such as Pr/Ph and Ga/C31H), and the biogenic-related parameters (such as ∑tricyclic terpane/∑ hopane and ∑sterane/∑hopane). A comparative analysis suggested that transgression-related changes in the redox conditions and parent materials triggered the biomarker diversity within the CSRs, resulting in a large difference in the hydrocarbon-forming parent materials between the two abovementioned outcrop sections. These might provide some insight for hydrocarbon exploration from CSRs, which have been attracting increasing attention in China, with proven coal reserves are ranked first in the world.
