Analyses of the spatial and temporal patterns of 26 years of stranding events (1995–2011 and 2012–2021, n = 568) in Indonesia were conducted to improve the country's stranding response. The Emerging Hot Spot Analysis was used to obtain the spatial and temporal hotspot patterns. A total of 92.4% events were single stranding, while the remaining were of mass stranding events. More stranding events were recorded between 2012 and 2021 in more dispersed locations compared to the previous period. Within the constraints of our sampling limitations, East Kalimantan and Bali were single stranding hotspots and consecutive hotspots. East Java and Sabu-Raijua in East Nusa Tenggara were mass stranding hotspots. Temporally, Raja Ampat (West Papua) experienced a significant increase in case numbers. The presence of active NGOs, individuals or government agencies in some locations might have inflated the numbers of reported cases compared to areas with less active institutions and/or individuals. However, our results still give a good understanding of the progression of Indonesia's stranding responses and good guidance of resource allocation for the stranding network. Several locations in Indonesia that need more efforts (e.g., more training workshops on rescue and necropsies) have been identified in this paper. Overcapacity of seaport infrastructure has been a common issue in many countries in recent years. Cautious investment decisions shall be made on the basis of realistic capacity evaluation and productivity improvement of existing ports. However, operational analysis and evaluation of a seaport is not always easy, especially for multipurpose terminals which are commonly seen in developing countries. These small-scaled multipurpose seaports handle different cargo types with multiple interrelated processes and varying handling methods and process times. This paper studies a single-berth multipurpose seaport with wharf space restriction in Indonesia and shows how the simulation model can be essential and significantly helpful in the evaluation of the port's productivity and realistic capacity. Furthermore, a new handling method is proposed and evaluated by the simulation model. Indonesia is an interesting case study for researchers, educators and students of sustainable development and sustainable energy due to its ability to connect the multiple "worlds" it has become part of. Indonesia is an important bridge to Muslim countries, the voice of the Global South in the G20 and a main pillar of the 134-country-strong G77. Indonesia's development trajectory is also key to the achievement of the Paris Climate Agreement as well as of the 2030 Agenda. This article proposes that one way to understand Indonesia's complex energy transition is by knowing how to teach it as a case study. By teaching how Indonesia addresses contradictions that would have been unsurmountable for other countries, new insights and values can be gained. Indonesia's energy transition offers helpful lessons, because of its aspiration to become a developed country by 2045. However, as the methodology of this paper suggests, these lessons can be more valuable when they are achieved through the stages of reflection, interaction and action. By knowing how to teach Indonesia's energy transition, the value of knowledge can be multiplied. This article begins by showing how Indonesia addresses barriers and caveats by focusing on silver linings and comes up with pragmatic solutions to energy-related issues. This is followed by the "teaching guide," which provides recommendations as to how the lessons from Indonesia can be embedded into a learning experience. The "learning activation approach" is introduced, which encourages students to systematically reflect on the complexity of selected contexts and understand this complexity by looking at the technical issues and processes that allow decision making. The sustainability of the water supply program in developing countries is influenced by many inter-linked and dynamic factors, suggesting the need to analyse the system behaviour of the water supply program. However, no study analyses factors influencing the sustainability of rural drinking water supply programs holistically, and this study aims to fill that gap. This study utilized a system dynamics approach based on a case study of a community-based rural drinking water supply program (PAMSIMAS in Bahasa) in Magelang Regency, Indonesia. Five sustainability aspects were considered in the model development and simulation: financial, institutional, environmental, technical, and social aspects. Eight scenario analyses related to those five aspects were conducted. The causal loop diagrams suggest that the overall loop in the system is reinforcing, meaning that the improvement in one aspect will improve the overall condition of the system and deterioration in one aspect will reduce the overall condition of the system. Scenario analysis shows that external fund is critical to support the program financially, especially at the beginning of the project when the piped system is being built and water revenue is still low. Scenario and sensitivity analyses revealed that human factors, i.e., the performance of the water board and response and support from the community, positively influence the sustainability of the water supply program. Additionally, the water board plays a key role in accelerating the pipe network growth. Finally, this paper argues that visualising and simulating the causal relationship and dynamic behaviour of the rural water supply program are critical for water stakeholders to better design and implement the water supply program. Losing a hand can significantly impact an individual's physical and emotional well-being. Prosthetic hands can help restore some function and independence for individuals who have lost a hand. However, the prosthetic hands available on the market are prohibitively expensive, especially for developing countries, such as Indonesia. Commercial electronically powered prosthetic hands can be expensive, having prices ranging from $25,000 to $75,000 and annual maintenance costs ranging from $500 to $3000. In contrast, body-powered prosthetic hands are generally cheaper, ranging from $2000 to $10,000, but are still considered expensive for many people in developing countries. To make prosthetic hands more accessible, we have designed a body-powered prosthetic hand, "Karla", using affordable materials and with as few components as possible. This report presents our proposed designs, the innovations, the parts in detail, and experiences using the designed prosthetic hand. The highlight of our design is a novel whippletree-like mechanism that utilizes the 3-D space to contract the fingers of the prosthetic hand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An active school transport (AST) instrument to measure parental intentions in a developing country context with 11 latent constructs and 108 measuring items has been created as part of an integrated framework, including psychological and social cognitive constructs, perceived environmental constructs, and habit constructs. The purpose of the current study is to develop and carry out the initial validation of these construct items for measuring parental intentions to promote AST in the context of a developing country. Three experts assigned a content validity index (CVI) to the measurement items and evaluated them based on the item-CVI (I-CVI) and the scale-level-CVI (S-CVI). A pilot study was conducted to test the validity and reliability of the construct items in Palembang, Indonesia, with 34 parents of school-aged children returning the instruments to be analyzed using SPSS Version 23. It was discovered that 93 items were legitimate, since their R values were greater than 0.3, and it was determined that 11 constructs were reliable because the measured items revealed a Cronbach's alpha coefficient range of 0.8–0.9 (very good) to >0.9. This instrument met the requirements for good validity and reliability and thus, can contribute as a novel instrument to measure parental intentions towards AST, especially in developing countries in Asia, particularly Indonesia. Research on idiosyncratic volatility in developing countries, particularly Indonesia, is scant. This study is the first to explain idiosyncratic concepts through an information environment approach and an examination of information asymmetry. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of idiosyncratic risk in Indonesia, whether it is related to price informativeness or price error, by considering the information environment. We identified the information environment based on the liquidity levels and stock liquidity risk. Our research revealed the relationship between information asymmetry in the information environment and idiosyncratic volatility by using a sample of 499 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the period 2017–2019. One thousand, two hundred and twenty-nine (firm_year) observation data were obtained. The dependent variable was idiosyncratic volatility, and the independent variable used an information environment consisting of stock liquidity, liquidity risk, and information asymmetry. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the literature on idiosyncratic volatility by showing how it can predict the development of the information environment, and how the latter is a consequence of information asymmetry. Moreover, this study should also complement views that are related to the concept of idiosyncratic volatility equivalent to price errors; this research has been carried out in previous studies. The introduction of the Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 concepts has been undoubtedly challenging, and the readiness towards them could be fundamentally enhanced by strategic management and entrepreneurial governance. Bureaucracy in the majority of developing countries, including Indonesia, is an impediment due to the delays in bureaucratic reform and weak patterns of communication and coordination between their institutions. This study aims to analyze the readiness towards the era of Industry 4.0, and Society 5.0 in Indonesia from the perspectives of strategic management of the bureaucracy and entrepreneurial government. We undertake a case study on the organization of the Deputy for Human Resources of the Indonesian Ministry of Empowerment of the State Apparatus and Bureaucratic Reform and use a mixed method that simultaneously combines quantitative and qualitative methods. The resulted data from observations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions were then analyzed using path analysis, descriptive methods, and qualitative approaches. Our results finding shows that there is a strategic value in data-based policies, and the ownership of data from various perspectives is strategically used as a direction for policymakers. One of the impacts of the Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 concepts is that the world has become increasingly connected. Hence, there are no boundaries between systems. Bureaucratic strategic management and entrepreneurial government have a significant effect on the readiness towards the Industry 4.0, and Society 5.0 concepts, in Indonesia, either partially or simultaneously. Numerous fast-growing coastal cities in the Global South are exposed to coastal, fluvial and pluvial floods, as a consequence of decades-long rapid urbanisation and weak enforcement of planning regulations. Integrating Blue–Green Infrastructure (BGI) concepts into the development of the urban landscape has the potential to increase flood resilience and offer broader environmental benefits. BGI is an innovative approach that combines water management and green infrastructure to maintain natural water cycles and enhance environmental and urban renewal. This paper identifies socio-economic, cultural and political challenges influencing BGI adoption in Semarang city in Indonesia. Data was collected from residents of three communities through interviews (n=30), questionnaires (n=180) and focus groups with policymakers and community representatives. The combined quantitative and qualitative data provide an understanding of the specific socio-economic, cultural and political issues at play and reveal flood experience as well as perceptions of community members regarding flood management. Challenges are presented from the point of view of residents and local policymakers and are based on a framework for facilitating local BGI adoption, setting the principles of "inclusive", "appropriate" and "proactive" as pre-conditions for enhancing community resilience to flooding. In the provision of urban residential areas, private land developers play critical roles in nearly all stages of the land development process. Despite their important role little is known about how the spatial decisions of individual developers collectively influence urban growth. This paper employs an agent-based modelling approach to capture the spatial decisions of private land developers in shaping new urban forms. By drawing on microeconomic theory, the model simulates urban growth in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area, Indonesia, under different scenarios that reflect the decision behaviours of different types of developers. Results reveal that larger developers favour sites that are more proximate to the city centre whilst smaller developers prefer sites that are located further away from the city, that drive a more sprawled urban form. Our findings show that new urban areas are generated by different developers through different processes. The profit maximisation behaviour by developers with large capital reserves is more predictable than those with small capital funds. The imbalance in capital holdings by different types of developers interacts with one another to exert adverse impacts on the urban development process. Our study provides supporting evidence highlighting the need for urban policy to regulate urban expansion and achieve more sustainable urban development outcomes in a developing world context. By 2025, biogas is estimated to become a larger part of Indonesia's energy mix. Biogas is a renewable energy source that also has economic and environmental advantages. Domestic biogas generation has been embraced in Indonesia as a response to the country's energy security concerns in rural areas. Since the 1970s, 48,038 biogas plants have been built in the region. To fully develop this technology, Indonesia must discontinue relying on fossil fuels and substitute current fossil-fuel-based energy. This article provides an overview of renewable technology in Indonesia, as well as addressing domestic energy demands and referring to existing literature on the socio-technical and socio-economic barriers to biogas adoption in Indonesia. Based on a rigorous review of 71 publications published in Web of Science (WoS) between 2010 and 2021, this study explores existing barriers for biogas adoption by summarizing the current literature from technical, economic, social and environmental perspectives. Biogas adoption is a complex process with many interwoven components. Therefore, this research addresses a gap in the strategic planning and implementation process, providing policymakers with pathways to eliminate bottlenecks in renewable energy planning. Detailed exploration of why and how a certain forest management operation was not implemented will lead to more nuanced understandings of local policy realities. Drawing on the viewpoints of street-level bureaucracy, the present study examined discretionary operations practiced by frontline forest bureaucrats in Java, Indonesia. The study particularly focused on how changes in wider political economic situations affected power relations between frontline forest bureaucrats and locals, and how changed power relations generated discretionary operations both in regulatory and facilitation aspects. The author combined various data collection methods, including a mail-out questionnaire survey for frontline forest bureaucrats, a survey through in-person interviews of village representatives, a survey through in-person interviews of household heads in a village, and participatory observations of events in villages. The findings showed that frontline forest bureaucrats' discretion included both creative and passive forms; whereas they attempted to accommodate contrasting policy goals of protecting forests and meeting local demands for forests, they felt hesitation to cope with local situations due to increasing bargaining power of locals that resulted from recent democratization processes. Policy options or organizational measures to remove the conditions that result in negative types of discretion should be deliberated based on the realities of frontline forest bureaucrats. Combatting climate change necessitates a substantial global increase in renewable electricity capacity. Many low-income and lower-middle-income countries suffer from unfavorable green financing conditions. Fifteen of these countries possess substantial natural gas reserves. To overcome green financing constraints in such countries, we propose an integrated energy contract that awards a renewable energy project in parallel with an upstream natural gas project to interested energy companies. The state returns from the natural gas project provide a guarantee for renewable energy investments, reducing their associated risks. We conduct Monte Carlo simulations for each of the targeted countries after populating the input parameters for the upstream natural gas and renewable energy projects, including forecasting country-specific natural gas prices. When accounting for 10% of their existing natural gas reserves in the proposed contract, Nigeria, Myanmar, and Indonesia can achieve more than 60% of their 2030 renewable energy target capacity additions while countries with low access to electricity can significantly upscale their installed capacities. The guarantee mechanism provides protection levels exceeding 96% on renewable energy investments. The global demand for air conditioners (ACs) has more than tripled since 1990, with 1.6 billion units currently in use. With the rapid economic and population growth of countries located in the hottest parts in the world, this trend is likely to continue in the future. The aim of this study was to show the benefits of introducing air conditioners with different materials or different technologies such as inverters with high energy-saving performance on the environment and human health in Indonesia. To evaluate the environmental impacts of the different technologies, a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) of air conditioners was conducted using the life-cycle impact assessment method based on endpoint modeling (LIME3). As expected, the use stage has the largest global warming potential (GWP), representing more than 90% of the impact, whereas copper and nickel have the most important impact in terms of resource consumption (about 50%). We found that the impacts are heavily dependent on the country's energy mix, but reduction can be achieved by introducing better technologies. The integration factors from LIME3 were then applied to estimate the external cost of each model; the results showed that the use stage also has the most influence. Even though the impact of climate change is important, air pollution impact must be seriously considered as its impact was found to be the highest (about 60% of the total impact). The external cost was finally compared to the possible benefits produced by the introduction of air conditioning technologies during their 10-year life cycle. We found that the impacts are twice that of the benefit for the best model (USD 2003 vs. 1064); however, the novelty of this study is that the benefit was also considered. In the future, developing countries should promote AC models with inverters, refrigerants with low global warming impact such as natural refrigerants, and encourage the recycling of units as soon as possible. The implementation of ubiquitous learning (u-learning) is a good opportunity to address the affordability, accessibility, and quality issues of the higher education sector that are present in many countries. However, its broad application is still limited within the instructionist paradigm. Improving its implementation performance is a challenge for researchers and practitioners. This study aimed to understand the readiness and success status of u-learning implementation in Indonesia and to assess factors influencing the status based on stakeholder perspectives. A mixed methods inquiry with the sequential nested strategy was carried out by focusing on a quantitative analysis. The findings revealed that the readiness constructs influence u-learning performance. The study may contribute, theoretically and practically, to future studies, especially u-learning implementation studies, from the perspective of a developing country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
