The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a barrage of primary research and reviews. We investigated the publishing process, time and resource wasting, and assessed the methodological quality of the reviews on artificial intelligence techniques to diagnose COVID-19 in medical images. We searched nine databases from inception until 1 September 2020. Two independent reviewers did all steps of identification, extraction, and methodological credibility assessment of records. Out of 725 records, 22 reviews analysing 165 primary studies met the inclusion criteria. This review covers 174,277 participants in total, including 19,170 diagnosed with COVID-19. The methodological credibility of all eligible studies was rated as critically low: 95% of papers had significant flaws in reporting quality. On average, 7.24 (range: 0–45) new papers were included in each subsequent review, and 14% of studies did not include any new paper into consideration. Almost three-quarters of the studies included less than 10% of available studies. More than half of the reviews did not comment on the previously published reviews at all. Much wasting time and resources could be avoided if referring to previous reviews and following methodological guidelines. Such information chaos is alarming. Simple Summary: In this study, after conducting a comprehensive review of 1356 papers that evaluated the diagnostic performance of deep learning (DL) methods based on medical images for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the findings showed a pooled sensitivity of 89% (95% CI: 87–91), a specificity of 90% (95% CI: 87–92), and an AUC of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.93–0.97). In addition, both the DL methods and human clinicians demonstrated similar levels of performance in HCC detection, with receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) values of 0.97 (95% CI: 0.95–0.98) for both groups, indicating no discernible difference. Although the heterogeneity was obvious, the utilization of DL methods for diagnosing HCC through medical images has shown promising outcomes. (1) Background: The aim of our research was to systematically review papers specifically focused on the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnostic performance of DL methods based on medical images. (2) Materials: To identify related studies, a comprehensive search was conducted in prominent databases, including Embase, IEEE, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. The search was limited to studies published before 3 July 2023. The inclusion criteria consisted of studies that either developed or utilized DL methods to diagnose HCC using medical images. To extract data, binary information on diagnostic accuracy was collected to determine the outcomes of interest, namely, the sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). (3) Results: Among the forty-eight initially identified eligible studies, thirty studies were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity was 89% (95% CI: 87–91), the specificity was 90% (95% CI: 87–92), and the AUC was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.93–0.97). Analyses of subgroups based on medical image methods (contrast-enhanced and non-contrast-enhanced images), imaging modalities (ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography), and comparisons between DL methods and clinicians consistently showed the acceptable diagnostic performance of DL models. The publication bias and high heterogeneity observed between studies and subgroups can potentially result in an overestimation of the diagnostic accuracy of DL methods in medical imaging. Precise medical image segmentation of regions of interest (ROIs) is crucial for accurate disease diagnosis and progression assessment. However, acquiring high-quality annotated data at the pixel level poses a significant challenge due to the resource-intensive nature of this process. This scarcity of high-quality annotated data results in few-shot scenarios, which are highly prevalent in clinical applications. To address this obstacle, this paper introduces Agent-Guided SAM (AGSAM), an innovative approach that transforms the Segment Anything Model (SAM) into a fully automated segmentation method by automating prompt generation. Capitalizing on the pre-trained feature extraction and decoding capabilities of SAM-Med2D, AGSAM circumvents the need for manual prompt engineering, ensuring adaptability across diverse segmentation methods. Furthermore, the proposed feature augmentation convolution module (FACM) enhances model accuracy by promoting stable feature representations. Experimental evaluations demonstrate AGSAM's consistent superiority over other methods across various metrics. Thoracic diseases refer to disorders that affect the lungs, heart, and other parts of the rib cage, such as pneumonia, novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), tuberculosis, cardiomegaly, and fracture. Millions of people die every year from thoracic diseases. Therefore, early detection of these diseases is essential and can save many lives. Earlier, only highly experienced radiologists examined thoracic diseases, but recent developments in image processing and deep learning techniques are opening the door for the automated detection of these diseases. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review including: types of thoracic diseases; examination types of thoracic images; image pre-processing; models of deep learning applied to the detection of thoracic diseases (e.g., pneumonia, COVID-19, edema, fibrosis, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer); transfer learning background knowledge; ensemble learning; and future initiatives for improving the efficacy of deep learning models in applications that detect thoracic diseases. Through this survey paper, researchers may be able to gain an overall and systematic knowledge of deep learning applications in medical thoracic images. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a life-threatening hematological malignancy that requires early and accurate diagnosis for effective treatment. However, the manual diagnosis of ALL is time-consuming and can delay critical treatment decisions. To address this challenge, researchers have turned to advanced technologies such as deep learning (DL) models. These models leverage the power of artificial intelligence to analyze complex patterns and features in medical images and data, enabling faster and more accurate diagnosis of ALL. However, the existing DL-based ALL diagnosis suffers from various challenges, such as computational complexity, sensitivity to hyperparameters, and difficulties with noisy or low-quality input images. To address these issues, in this paper, we propose a novel Deep Skip Connections-Based Dense Network (DSCNet) tailored for ALL diagnosis using peripheral blood smear images. The DSCNet architecture integrates skip connections, custom image filtering, Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence loss, and dropout regularization to enhance its performance and generalization abilities. DSCNet leverages skip connections to address the vanishing gradient problem and capture long-range dependencies, while custom image filtering enhances relevant features in the input data. KL divergence loss serves as the optimization objective, enabling accurate predictions. Dropout regularization is employed to prevent overfitting during training, promoting robust feature representations. The experiments conducted on an augmented dataset for ALL highlight the effectiveness of DSCNet. The proposed DSCNet outperforms competing methods, showcasing significant enhancements in accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F-score, and area under the curve (AUC), achieving increases of 1.25%, 1.32%, 1.12%, 1.24%, and 1.23%, respectively. Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among women worldwide, and early detection of the disease can be lifesaving. Detecting breast cancer early allows for treatment to begin faster, increasing the chances of a successful outcome. Machine learning helps in the early detection of breast cancer even in places where there is no access to a specialist doctor. The rapid advancement of machine learning, and particularly deep learning, leads to an increase in the medical imaging community's interest in applying these techniques to improve the accuracy of cancer screening. Most of the data related to diseases is scarce. On the other hand, deep-learning models need much data to learn well. For this reason, the existing deep-learning models on medical images cannot work as well as other images. To overcome this limitation and improve breast cancer classification detection, inspired by two state-of-the-art deep networks, GoogLeNet and residual block, and developing several new features, this paper proposes a new deep model to classify breast cancer. Utilizing adopted granular computing, shortcut connection, two learnable activation functions instead of traditional activation functions, and an attention mechanism is expected to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and consequently decrease the load on doctors. Granular computing can improve diagnosis accuracy by capturing more detailed and fine-grained information about cancer images. The proposed model's superiority is demonstrated by comparing it to several state-of-the-art deep models and existing works using two case studies. In recent years, deep learning has been successfully applied to medical image analysis and provided assistance to medical professionals. Machine learning is being used to offer diagnosis suggestions, identify regions of interest in images, or augment data to remove noise. Training models for such tasks require a large amount of labeled data. It is often difficult to procure such data due to the fact that these requires experts to manually label them, in addition to the privacy and legal concerns that limiting their collection. Due to this, creating self-supervision learning methods and domain-adaptation techniques dedicated to this domain is essential. This paper reviews concepts from the field of deep learning and how they have been applied to medical image analysis. We also review the current state of self-supervised learning methods and their applications to medical images. A comprehensive medical image-based diagnosis is usually performed across various image modalities before passing a final decision; hence, designing a deep learning model that can use any medical image modality to diagnose a particular disease is of great interest. The available methods are multi-staged, with many computational bottlenecks in between. This paper presents an improved end-to-end method of multimodal image classification using deep learning models. We present top research methods developed over the years to improve models trained from scratch and transfer learning approaches. We show that when fully trained, a model can first implicitly discriminate the imaging modality and then diagnose the relevant disease. Our developed models were applied to COVID-19 classification from chest X-ray, CT scan, and lung ultrasound image modalities. Automated deep learning is promising in artificial intelligence (AI). However, a few applications of automated deep learning networks have been made in the clinical medical fields. Therefore, we studied the application of an open-source automated deep learning framework, Autokeras, for detecting smear blood images infected with malaria parasites. Autokeras is able to identify the optimal neural network to perform the classification task. Hence, the robustness of the adopted model is due to it not needing any prior knowledge from deep learning. In contrast, the traditional deep neural network methods still require more construction to identify the best convolutional neural network (CNN). The dataset used in this study consisted of 27,558 blood smear images. A comparative process proved the superiority of our proposed approach over other traditional neural networks. Standard-of-care medical imaging techniques such as CT, MRI, and PET play a critical role in managing patients diagnosed with metastatic cutaneous melanoma. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, such as radiomics, machine learning, and deep learning, could revolutionize the use of medical imaging by enhancing individualized image-guided precision medicine approaches. In the present article, we will decipher how AI/radiomics could mine information from medical images, such as tumor volume, heterogeneity, and shape, to provide insights into cancer biology that can be leveraged by clinicians to improve patient care both in the clinic and in clinical trials. More specifically, we will detail the potential role of AI in enhancing detection/diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, treatment delivery, response assessment, treatment toxicity assessment, and monitoring of patients diagnosed with metastatic cutaneous melanoma. Finally, we will explore how these proof-of-concept results can be translated from bench to bedside by describing how the implementation of AI techniques can be standardized for routine adoption in clinical settings worldwide to predict outcomes with great accuracy, reproducibility, and generalizability in patients diagnosed with metastatic cutaneous melanoma. In the past years, deep neural networks (DNN) have become popular in many disciplines such as computer vision (CV), natural language processing (NLP), etc. The evolution of hardware has helped researchers to develop many powerful Deep Learning (DL) models to face numerous challenging problems. One of the most important challenges in the CV area is Medical Image Analysis in which DL models process medical images—such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray, computed tomography (CT), etc.—using convolutional neural networks (CNN) for diagnosis or detection of several diseases. The proper function of these models can significantly upgrade the health systems. However, recent studies have shown that CNN models are vulnerable under adversarial attacks with imperceptible perturbations. In this paper, we summarize existing methods for adversarial attacks, detections and defenses on medical imaging. Finally, we show that many attacks, which are undetectable by the human eye, can degrade the performance of the models, significantly. Nevertheless, some effective defense and attack detection methods keep the models safe to an extent. We end with a discussion on the current state-of-the-art and future challenges. Today, medical image-based diagnosis has advanced significantly in the world. The number of studies being conducted in this field is enormous, and they are producing findings with a significant impact on humanity. The number of databases created in this field is skyrocketing. Examining these data is crucial to find important underlying patterns. Classification is an effective method for identifying these patterns. This work proposes a deep investigation and analysis to evaluate and diagnose medical image data using various classification methods and to critically evaluate these methods' effectiveness. The classification methods utilized include machine-learning (ML) algorithms like artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), Naïve Bayes (NB), logistic regression (LR), random subspace (RS), fuzzy logic and a convolution neural network (CNN) model of deep learning (DL). We applied these methods to two types of datasets: chest X-ray datasets to classify lung images into normal and abnormal, and melanoma skin cancer dermoscopy datasets to classify skin lesions into benign and malignant. This work aims to present a model that aids in investigating and assessing the effectiveness of ML approaches and DL using CNN in classifying the medical databases and comparing these methods to identify the most robust ones that produce the best performance in diagnosis. Histopathology refers to the examination by a pathologist of biopsy samples. Histopathology images are captured by a microscope to locate, examine, and classify many diseases, such as different cancer types. They provide a detailed view of different types of diseases and their tissue status. These images are an essential resource with which to define biological compositions or analyze cell and tissue structures. This imaging modality is very important for diagnostic applications. The analysis of histopathology images is a prolific and relevant research area supporting disease diagnosis. In this paper, the challenges of histopathology image analysis are evaluated. An extensive review of conventional and deep learning techniques which have been applied in histological image analyses is presented. This review summarizes many current datasets and highlights important challenges and constraints with recent deep learning techniques, alongside possible future research avenues. Semantic image segmentation has a wide range of applications. When it comes to medical image segmentation, its accuracy is even more important than those of other areas because the performance gives useful information directly applicable to disease diagnosis, surgical planning, and history monitoring. The state-of-the-art models in medical image segmentation are variants of encoder-decoder architecture, which is called U-Net. To effectively reflect the spatial features in feature maps in encoder-decoder architecture, we propose a spatially adaptive weighting scheme for medical image segmentation. Specifically, the spatial feature is estimated from the feature maps, and the learned weighting parameters are obtained from the computed map, since segmentation results are predicted from the feature map through a convolutional layer. Especially in the proposed networks, the convolutional block for extracting the feature map is replaced with the widely used convolutional frameworks: VGG, ResNet, and Bottleneck Resent structures. In addition, a bilinear up-sampling method replaces the up-convolutional layer to increase the resolution of the feature map. For the performance evaluation of the proposed architecture, we used three data sets covering different medical imaging modalities. Experimental results show that the network with the proposed self-spatial adaptive weighting block based on the ResNet framework gave the highest IoU and DICE scores in the three tasks compared to other methods. In particular, the segmentation network combining the proposed self-spatially adaptive block and ResNet framework recorded the highest 3.01% and 2.89% improvements in IoU and DICE scores, respectively, in the Nerve data set.
