Miracle tales are didactic stories related to Buddhist figures, objects, and places that describe supernormal occurrences brought about by acts of great piety and fervent devotion. They present the audience with concrete examples of the workings of karma, while simultaneously setting verifiable historical precedents in a bid to prove the religious efficacy of Buddhism in China. These were also historiographical works, providing a wealth of detail regarding not only religious life and belief in China, but also local lore, politics, architectural trends, and much more. This paper will focus on a text called the Ji shenzhou sanbao gantong lu 集神州三寶感通錄 (T2106), a collection of miracle tales compiled by the seventh-century scholar-monk, Daoxuan 道宣 (596–667 CE). This text is a collection of narratives drawn from literary and epigraphy sources, as well as orally transmitted stories. As a Buddhist figurehead and as the author of many seminal historiographical works, Daoxuan played a central role in the overall localization of this tradition in China. Bearing this in mind, this paper seeks to interpret the "collective images" presented in Daoxuan's collection of miracle tales, those representations of the miraculous and the supernormal. This paper provides a detailed technological characterization of the Roman opus sectile glasses (second century AD) coming from the renowned Gorga collection. Nine glass samples corresponding to imitations of the porfido verde antico, cipollino rosso, rosso antico, giallo antico, diaspro nero e giallo, semesanto and agate/alabaster stones were studied. The aim of this study was twofold: (i) archaeometric, i.e., to provide valuable data on the production, raw materials and techniques of these refined Roman glasses that mimic precious stones and (ii) methodological, i.e., to highlight the good performance of combining polished thin sections and local probe measurements for the study of glassy microstructures. Based on the nature of the flux used, the glasses from the samples were classified as either natron-type or mixed-type (natron/plant ash). The latter stem from remelted glasses and contain relict grains of wollastonite that were not found in the pure natron samples. Relict wollastonite crystals appear to be a proficient petrographic marker to spot recycled glasses along with the commonly used chemical fingerprints. Different production and colouring techniques were identified, even for a given type of imitated stone. Metallic Cu, Ca antimonates and Pb-Fe antimonates were the three opacifiers used for the opaque glasses. Based on the crystal morphologies, metallic Cu and Ca antimoniates were possibly synthesized in situ simultaneously with the glass, whilst the Pb-Fe antimonates were prepared ex situ. The working temperatures for these glasses were estimated within the 900–1100 °C range based on the presence and known thermal stability of some identified crystal phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Topaz is a kind of mineral with variable composition and a common gemstone variety. Because of its wide distribution and rich colors, it has attracted the attention of scholars around the world. In this paper, the composition, spectral, and gemological characteristics of yellow topaz were systematically characterized, and the dark inclusions inside the samples were discussed and analyzed. The results show that the yellow topaz has a glassy luster, transparent, with a refractive index of 1.609–1.617 and a birefringence of 0.008. The topaz sample has columnar crystal shape and a typical rhomboid cross section. The infrared spectral characteristic absorption peaks of yellow topaz mainly appear near 3649, 3426, 950, 628, 550, and 457 cm−1. The characteristic absorption peaks for Raman spectra are mainly at 937, 404, and 267 cm−1. The UV-vis spectra of all samples only had strong absorption bands in the range of 200–300 nm. The results of XRF and EMPA showed that the contents of Al2O3 and SiO2 in the samples were 52.79 (wt%) and 29.55 (wt%), respectively, and it was reasonable to speculate that the chromogenic element of the yellow color was iron. The inclusions in yellow topaz samples are mainly fluid inclusions, healing cracks, and albite. Owing to the high market values of natural sunstones in Oregon, a kind of artificially diffused red feldspar exhibited at the Tucson Exhibition at the beginning of this century, whose color origin is the same as that of natural sunstone (copper nanoparticles). However, the details of the artificial diffusion process are less disclosed, there is no systematic method to obtain such gemstones. In this paper, we developed the high-temperature copper diffusion process for the surface recoloring of faceted labradorites, which are partly buried in the diffusant. By optimizing the experimental parameters of high-temperature copper diffusion, we successfully recolored the faceted labradorites to red and light red. The gemological and spectroscopic characteristics of the recolored faceted labradorite were further characterized. The red and light-red faceted labradorites exhibited the unique surface plasmon resonance absorption peaks of copper nanoparticles near 580 nm, which is the origin of red color. The typical inclusions formed in the faceted labradorite is in the shape of "fire cloud". The interface of red and light-red faceted labradorite that is in contact with the diffusant is less contaminated, we believe that the contamination could be further reduced or eliminated by optimizing the high-temperature copper diffusion process. Featured Application: Based on the data and analytical methodologies reported here, this review can be used as a reference for Green Stones identification and characterization protocols. Moreover, due to the multidisciplinary approach discussed, it can also be considered as an example useful for similar applications. The present review aims to discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in cultural heritage and archaeometry investigations. The analytical methods used to identify and characterize "Green Stones" are discussed as an example. In the present paper, the term Green Stones is applied but not limited to jade materials, which have considerable importance in cultural heritage studies. In fact, archaeological samples made in Green Stones have been discovered worldwide, with many dating back to the Neolithic Age. Moreover, these materials represent an interesting analytical challenge, starting with their nomenclature and, in most cases, the nature of their polycrystalline samples and their heterogeneity. Indeed, after a brief introduction about the advantages of the non-destructive analytical techniques commonly used for gemstones and cultural heritage samples analyses, the limits of the same have been discussed on the basis of Green Stones applicability. Finally, a multidisciplinary methodology for Green Stones identification and full characterization, which considers materials' heterogeneity and information, has been proposed and based on different references. The colour-bearing elements can be essential to the mineral composition (idiochromatic minerals) or they can just play an occasional role as impurities (allochromatic minerals), along with other sporadic sources of colour, such as colour centres associated with structural defects. Colour is one of the most eye-catching properties of some minerals and rocks. Colour matching functions were used to calculate the colour parameters influencing garnet colour-changing under different light sources. The features that are extracted from the images were the colours (histograms of the colour coordinates of the pixels defined in a given colour space) and texture analyses operators. Cordierite is a violet-blue gem mineral primarily composed of magnesium aluminum silicate. This study employed three samples of Mg-cordierite and conducted tests on their gemological characteristics, spectroscopic features, and chemical composition using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectrophotometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron microprobe. The study also explored and analyzed the polychroism and coloration mechanisms of the samples. The results indicate that the lattice vibrations of the Mg-cordierite samples differ along the directions parallel to the a, b, and c crystallographic axes, leading to certain variations in spectral characteristics among these directions. The article provides experimental evidence for the reasons for the polychroism of cordierite in different crystal axes, which is of great significance in the quality evaluation of cordierite. Currently, most of the popular spinels in the jewellery market come from Myanmar and Tajikistan. It is well known that provenance is one of the main factors affecting the value of a gemstone, and the geographic origin of a gemstone can be determined by examining its gemological and inclusion characteristics. This study systematically characterized the conventional gemology of spinels from Myanmar and Tajikistan and compared the inclusions in the spinels from these two countries by means of gemological microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that most red and pink Myanmarese spinels were octahedral or contact twins, while Tajikistani spinels are slabbed or octahedral distorted crystals. Columnar zircon is frequently found in Tajikistani spinels but rare in Myanmarese spinels, appearing as tiny accessory inclusions. There are three types of carbonate inclusions (magnesite, dolomite, and calcite) in Myanmarese spinels, but Tajikistani spinels have only one (magnesite). In addition, spinels of different origins include special inclusions. Myanmarese spinels contain pyrite inclusions; Tajikistani spinels contain rutile and talc inclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spinel is a precious stone with a long history. In ancient societies spinel was considered to be an imitation of ruby. With the depletion of ruby mineral resources, gem—grade spinel has attracted more and more attention from consumers. In the last decade, as the popularity of spinel in the global colored gem market continues to rise, plenty of domestic and foreign jewelry brands have launched spinel based jewelry. This study takes spinels from Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania as its research objects and performs a series of tests to obtain their gemological characteristics, spectral characteristics, and chemical composition, with the aim of comparing the differences between spinels with different colors from different areas and exploring the chromogenic mechanism of spinels. Only Burmese red spinels have a typical Cr spectrum. The types of inclusions and the contents of trace elements are the main differences between spinels from the four areas. Burmese spinel is characterized by an octahedral negative crystal filled with dolomite or a mixture of dolomite and calcite. Magnesite is present in Sri Lankan spinels, and dolomite is present in Tanzanian spinel. Dislocation systems and the presence of titanite and talc inclusions are strongly indicative features of Vietnamese spinel. Sri Lankan spinel is characterized by abundant gas–liquid inclusions, such as the beaded healing fissure. The trace element contents of the four areas are different. Burmese spinel is poor in Fe and Zn (Fe: 135.68–3925 ppm; Zn: 338.58–1312 ppm), while Burmese red spinel is rich in Cr (up to 7387 ppm). Vietnamese spinel is rich in Fe (3669.63–19,425 ppm) and poor in Ti content (<89 ppm), while Tanzanian spinel is rich in Zn (5129.96–7008 ppm). High content of Cr + V can lead to the red color in spinel, and the contents of Cr and V change obviously with color. Spinels appear red when Cr content is higher than V, while spinels appear orange when V content is higher than Cr. The red, pink, and orange spinels are colored by Cr3+ and V3+, showing a wide absorption band centered at 400 nm and 550 nm. Fe plays a dominant role in purple spinels. Featuring subtle lithological alterations in the host rocks and containing colossal gemstone crystals, the scheelite deposit at Xuebaoding in the Pingwu region of Sichuan Province exhibits characteristics typical of a vein-like hydrothermal-type deposit. The scheelite from the Xuebaoding region is renowned for its high saturation of color, perfect crystal shape, and pure color. In this study, its crystal structure and mineralogical, geochemical, and in situ Sr-Nd isotope characteristics are all systematically characterized. Our objective is to determine the source of ore-forming materials, the timing of the mineralization, and the chemical composition of scheelite, including major elements, trace elements, and rare earths elements (REE). The scheelite samples were analyzed with a variety of methods such as polarizing microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), electron probing, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In addition, conventional gemological tests were performed using instruments including gemstone microscopes, GI-UVB ultraviolet fluorescent lamps, grating spectroscopy, etc. The results demonstrate that scheelite exhibits a high refractive index, excellent crystallinity, and a granular structure. Clear color bands and ring structures are observed within the minerals, accompanied by interference colors of light blue, blue, and yellow. Additionally, the mineral components are relatively concentrated, with muscovite and illite serving as accessory minerals. Furthermore, the chemical composition of scheelite reveals a WO3/CaO mass ratio that approaches or exceeds the ideal value. Moreover, it exhibits a wide range of variations in total rare earth element (∑REE) content, which is characterized by an enrichment of light rare earths (LREE), significant negative Eu anomalies, and insignificant Ce anomalies. In addition, the metallogenic formation of scheelite can be estimated to have occurred during the Toarcian stage in the Lower Jurassic Epoch period, approximately 183 Ma. The study further revealed that A-type granite serves as the genesis type of scheelite, with most of the ore-forming materials originating from the upper crust and a few derived from younger crustal sources. The Cathedral of Valencia, Spain, has preserved the so-called Holy Chalice of the Last Supper since 1437. It consists of a foot, a gold stem, and an upper cup carved in agate stone. Based on a pious tradition, this cup is supposed to be the one used by Jesus of Nazareth to institute the Eucharist. According to an archeological study published in 1960, this agate bowl was crafted around the 2nd–1st centuries BC, but people visiting this famous relic often wonder about its authenticity and about the evidence supporting it as a Hellenistic–Roman cup. Attempting to clarify this concern, a photographical characterization of the agate cup is presented and discussed. The main conclusions are the following: (i) The typology of the bowl is common to classical tableware, but the wall thickness, shape of the rim, and foot are typical of gemstone cups from the Hellenistic–Roman period. (ii) This cup would have been extremely valuable, which agrees with the location of the Cenacle in the aristocratic neighborhood of Jerusalem. The Cathedral of Valencia has kept an important relic since 1437: the Holy Chalice of the Last Supper. It consists of an agate cup, a gold stem, and a gemstone foot. According to a pious tradition, this cup is the one used by Jesus of Nazareth to institute the Eucharist. Tourists visiting Valencia Cathedral often doubt its authenticity. There are certain queries that pilgrims wonder about, some of which have not been studied in depth. For example: What is known about the family who owned the chalice? Why would Jesus use a gemstone cup instead of one made of glass, silver, or gold? Aimed at clarifying these concerns, the research methodology was essentially centered on a review of the literature. The main conclusions are the following: (i) The Cenacle belonged to a rich disciple of Jesus, who would have lent him a valuable cup of blessing. Quite likely, it was the family of Saint Mark, who had a close link with Saint Peter. (ii) It is unlikely that Jesus used a cup made of glass because this material was relatively affordable. By contrast, gemstone vessels were highly appreciated. Gemstones are minerals of gem qualities used for adornment and decoration with the attributes of beauty, durability and rarity. Traditionally, although China has been regarded as the most important source for nephrite, over the past decades, a large variety of gemstone resources have been newly discovered in China owing to continuous exploration works. The vast land with various geological and geochemical backgrounds is rich in gemstone resources with potential for new deposits discoveries. In pegmatites, gemstones are related to granitic magma events and mainly occur in pegmatitic cavities, such as tourmaline, aquamarine, spodumene, spessartine, moonstone, quartz, apatite, and topaz. The eruption of Tertiary basaltic magma provides gem-quality sapphire, spinel, olivine, garnet, and zircon. The supergene oxidation zones of some copper and iron deposits in Hubei and Anhui province host gem-quality turquoise and malachite. Moreover, the formation of the nephrite deposit in China is mostly related to the carbonatite and serpentinite rocks involved in the metamorphic-metasomatic processes. This paper comprehensively introduces the distribution of gemstones deposits, as well as the gemological and mineralogical characteristics of gemstones in China. The Jizerka Quaternary alluvial placer in the Czech Republic has been a well-known source of gemstones since the 16th century, and the only one in Europe that has yielded a significant amount of jewel-quality sapphire. Besides Mg-rich ilmenite ("iserine"), which is the most common heavy mineral at the locality, some other minerals have been mined for jewellery purposes. These are corundum (sapphire and ruby varieties), zircon ("hyacinth" gemstone variety) and spinel. Here, we present a detailed petrological and geochronological investigation of the enigmatic relationship between the sapphires and their supposed host rocks, supporting their xenogenetic link. Our hypothesis is based on thermal resetting of the U–Pb isotopic age of the zircon inclusion found inside Jizerka blue sapphire to the estimated time of the anticipated host alkaline basalt intrusion. The host rocks of the gemstones (sapphire and zircon) and Mg-rich ilmenite are not yet known, but could be related to the Cenozoic volcanism located near the Jizerka gem placer (Bukovec diatreme volcano, Pytlácká jáma Pit diatreme and Hruškovy skály basalt pipe). The transport of sapphire, zircon and Mg-rich ilmenite to the surface was connected with serial volcanic events, likely the fast ascent of alkali basalts and formation of multi-explosive diatreme maar structures with later deposition of volcanoclastic material in eluvial and alluvial sediments in nearby areas. All mineral xenocrysts usually show traces of magmatic corrosion textures, indicating disequilibrium with the transporting alkali basalt magma. In order to constrain the provenance and age of the Jizerka placer heavy mineral assemblage, zircon inclusion and associated phases (niobian rutile, baddeleyite and silicate melts) in the blue sapphire have been studied using LA–ICP–MS (laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry) geochemistry and U–Pb in situ dating. Modification of the zircon inclusion into baddeleyite by exposure to temperature above 1400 °C in a basaltic melt is accompanied by zircon U–Pb age resetting. A zircon inclusion in a Jizerka sapphire was dated at 31.2 ± 0.4 Ma, and its baddeleyite rim at 31 ± 16 Ma. The composition of the melt inclusions in sapphire and incorporated niobian rutile suggests that the parental rock of the sapphire was alkali syenite. The Eocene to late Miocene (Messinian) ages of Jizerka zircon are new findings within the Eger Graben structure, as well as among the other sapphire–zircon occurrences within the European Variscides. Jizerka blue sapphire mineral inclusions indicate a provenience of this gemstone mineral assemblage from different parental rocks of unknown age and unknown levels of the upper crust or lithospheric mantle. Green diopside is currently popular in the jewelry market due to its attractive color and excellent transparency. Gem-quality diopsides are mainly sourced from Pakistan, Italy, Russia, and other places. The color, geographic origin, and formation mechanism are the main factors affecting the value of gemstones, which can be determined by examining their gemology and composition characteristics. This study systematically characterizes the standard gemology of green diopsides from Pakistan and Russia and compares them with the blue diopsides produced within the skarn process and the diopsides from the nearby region in Russia from previous studies by gemological microscopy, spectral testing (infrared, Raman and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy), and chemical analyses (electron probe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry). The results show that the spectral characteristics and phase composition of the green diopside samples from Pakistan and Russia have excellent uniformity and similarity. The high Cr, Fe, V, and Ni contents are the reasons why they appear as green. Meanwhile, the elemental characteristics of the diopside are effective tools for distinguishing different origins of different diopsides. The Russian green diopsides have higher contents of Sr, Sc, Zr, and rare earth elements (REE), indicating that they are related to alkaline ultrabasic rocks, and the source of the diopside sample from Pakistan is metamorphic rock. Absorption spectroscopy has been widely used in gemstone societies as it enables the identification of the origin and post-treatment of gemstones in a non-destructive way. The infrared (IR) range is critical for studies of gemstones such as corundum, emerald, and diamond. Regarding the corundum sample, absorption peaks related to the -OH bond could be used as an index for heat-treatment detection, and different types of inclusions could be identified by analyzing the IR absorption spectrum. The most widely used method for measuring IR absorptions is Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which was designed based on the working of the Michelson interferometer. However, FTIR has a few limitations, such as a long measurement time and difficulty in sample placement, which limits its full automation capability. In this study, a mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometer relying on the upconversion phenomenon of non-linear crystals was used to measure the absorption spectra. Corundum with heat treatment features and/or with different common types of inclusions were measured by both transmission and reflection modes. After comparison with the FTIR spectra captured on the same sample set, the same target peaks could be captured with a shorter measurement time and easier operation. The developed MIR spectrometer could directly measure the absorption spectrum in the 2–4.5 µm (2200–5000 cm−1) range within a few seconds. Meanwhile, as both transmission and reflection modes were available, both loose and mounted gemstones could be measured, supporting the widespread use of this device in large-scale production and its ability to achieve full automation. Spinel is a precious gem with a long history, but people are far less familiar with it. Previous studies on Mogok spinel from Myanmar focused on inclusion analysis, chromogenic mechanism with a single-color gemstone and heat treatment, whereas systematic studies on varicolored gem-grade spinel are lacking. In this study, the gemological and geochemical analysis of four colors of spinel samples from Mogok were carried out for basic gemology, inclusion morphology and identification, spectroscopy and geochemistry. The aim was to explore the occupation of elements of spinels in the crystal structure, as well as the chromogenic mechanism of varicolored spinels and the geological and geodynamic conditions of the formation. Mogok spinel samples are characterized by octahedral negative crystals filled with calcite and chondrodite inclusions, indicating that they are derived from a marble metamorphic-type deposit. The spinel samples of four colors are magnesia–alumina spinel (MgAl2O4). The contents of V and Cr in Mogok spinel are generally high, with a significant high content of Zn being the most characteristic, and trace elements vary greatly. The infrared spectra of spinel samples in different colors are basically similar. According to the UV–Vis spectrum, pink and red samples are mainly colored by Cr and/or V, whereas orange samples are mainly colored by V. Two wide absorption bands in the range 300~600 nm are mainly attributed to the spin-allowed transition and spin-forbidden transition of Cr3+ and/or V3+. The purple samples are mainly colored by Fe and the UV–Vis spectrum is mainly attributed to the spin-forbidden transition of TFe2+. This paper reports the results of the designing, manufacturing and characterization of a jewel obtained by means of coupling the dogmas of industrial design to the analytical engineering approach. The key role in the design of the jewel was played by an in-house synthesized Neodymium (Nd)-doped phosphate glass, selected due to its easy handling and capability to change color according to the incident light wavelength. The glass core was covered by a metal alloy to mitigate its relatively high fragility and sensitivity to thermal shock and, at the same time, to highlight and preserve its beauty. The selection of the proper metal alloy, having thermo-mechanical properties compatible with those exhibited by the glass, was carried out by means of Ashby's maps, a powerful tool commonly adopted in the field of industrial design. Isomorphic substitutions of extra-framework components in sodalite-group aluminosilicate minerals and their thermal conversions have been investigated using infrared, Raman, electron spin resonance (ESR), as well as ultraviolet, visible and near infrared (UV–Vis–near IR) absorption spectroscopy methods and involving chemical and X-ray diffraction data. Sodalite-related minerals from gem lazurite deposits (haüyne, lazurite, and slyudyankaite) are characterized by wide variations in S-bearing extra-framework components including SO42− and various polysulfide groups (S2●−, S3●−, S4●− radical anions, and S4 and S6 neutral molecules) as well as the presence of CO2 molecules. Heating at 700 °C under reducing conditions results in the transformation of initial S-bearing groups SO42− and S3●− to a mixture of S2−, HS−, S2●−, and S4●− and transformation of CO2 to a mixture of CO32− and C2O42− or HC2O4− anionic groups. Further heating at 800 °C in air results in the decomposition of carbonate and oxalate groups, restoration of the SO42− and S3●− groups, and a sharp transformation of the framework. The HS− anion is stable only under reducing conditions, whereas the S3●− radical anion is the most stable polysulfide group. The HS−-dominant sodalite-group mineral sapozhnikovite forms a wide solid-solution series with sodalite. In this study, we report the experimental findings of a multi-methodological and comparative investigation of a natural (from the Wah Wah Mountains of Beaver County, Utah) and three synthetic (hydrothermally grown) gem-quality red beryls by means of: gemmological standard testing, laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectroscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible–near infrared absorption spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Gemmological, crystallo-chemical, and spectroscopic features of the natural and synthetic stones enabled us to unveil the causes of their color (from red, to purplish-red, or orange-red) and how different and complementary techniques can be efficiently used to discriminate between natural and synthetic materials, based on non-destructive, micro-destructive, and destructive techniques. Featured Application: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is applied to a variety of gemstones for classification and characterization purposes. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), accompanied by chemometric data analysis, is used to identify and classify gemstones of various hardness. The study involves several gemstones: amethyst, aquamarine beryl, bloodstone citrine, diopside, and enstatite. Their hardness is determined through a correlation utilizing the spectral intensity ratio of the ionic to atomic spectral lines of an identified element in the LIB spectrum. The result of the relative hardness obtained from the LIBS analysis is in good agreement with the hardness measured from Mohs's scale of hardness, a popular qualitative method to determine hardness. In this work, a linear relationship has been established between the Mohs's hardness and the plasma excitation temperature. Thus, the hardness of the gemstones can be determined with the help of plasma excitation temperature. Moreover, the analysis of trace elements in LIB spectral data reveals that a particular element is responsible for the colors of gemstones. Therefore, the relative concentration of constituents is calculated for all gemstones and compared. Principal component analysis (PCA) is successfully applied to all gemstone spectra for rapid classification and discrimination based on their variable elemental concentrations and respective hardness. Ruby (red corundum) is one of the most prominent colored gemstones in the world. The highest-quality ruby ("pigeon blood" ruby) comes from marbles of the Mogok Stone Tract in central Myanmar. Although Mogok ruby has been exploited since the 6th century AD, the formation time of this gemstone is ambiguous and controversial. In this paper, we describe a mineralogical, geochemical, and geochronological study of ruby and titanite in ruby-bearing marbles obtained from an outcrop in the Mogok Stone Tract, central Myanmar. Petrographic observations have shown that titanite generally occurs in the marble matrix or occurs as inclusions in ruby. These two types of titanite exhibit identical chemical compositions. In situ secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) U–Pb dating of the separated titanite from two representative samples of ruby-bearing marbles yielded lower intercept ages of 25.15 ± 0.24 Ma (MSWD = 0.26) and 25.06 ± 0.22 Ma (MSWD = 0.15), respectively. Because the closure temperature of the U–Pb system in titanite is close to the temperature of ruby growth, the obtained U–Pb ages (~25 Ma) are suggested to represent the timing of the studied ruby formation in Mogok. The acquired ages are in agreement with the timing of post-collisional extension in the Himalaya related to the migration of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis. Combining our dating results with previous geochronological data from the Mogok Stone Tract, we suggest that the formation of the studied ruby is most likely related to the high-temperature metamorphic event in the marbles during the India–Asia collision. Our study not only confirms that texturally constrained titanite could be a precise geochronometer to date the mineralization of different types of ruby, but also provides important geochronological information linking gemstone formation to the India–Asia collision. Metal matrix-impregnated diamond composites are widely used in diamond tool manufacturing. In order to satisfy the increasing engineering requirements, researchers have paid more and more attention to enhancing conventional metal matrices by applying novel methods. In this work, ZrO2 nanoparticles were introduced into the WC-bronze matrix with and without diamond grits via hot pressing to improve the performance of conventional diamond composites. The effects of ZrO2 nanoparticles on the microstructure, density, hardness, bending strength, and wear resistance of diamond composites were investigated. The results indicated that the hardness and relative density increased, while the bending strength decreased when the content of ZrO2 nanoparticles increased. The grinding ratio of diamond composites increased significantly by 60% as a result of nano-ZrO2 addition. The enhancement mechanism was discussed. Diamond composites showed the best overall properties with the addition of 1 wt % ZrO2 nanoparticles, thus paving the way for further applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Growing public interest in getting information on the origin of raw materials used to manufacture goods for daily life has triggered the development of concepts to increase the transparency of raw material supply chains. Analytical proofs of origin (APOs) for raw materials may support those transparency concepts by giving evidence about the origin of a specific raw material shipment. For a variety of raw materials like gemstones, TTT (tantalum, tin, tungsten) minerals, and others, APOs have been developed. The identification of features that distinguish different origins, databases of those features from reliable reference samples, and a data evaluation strategy adopted to the envisaged application scenario are the key aspects of APO methods. Five samples of differently colored sodalite-group minerals from gem lazurite deposits were studied by means of electron microprobe and wet chemical analyses, infrared, Raman, electron spin resonance (ESR) and UV-Visible spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Various extra-framework components (SO42−, S2− and Cl− anions, S3•−, S2•− and SO3•− radical anions, H2O, CO2, COS, cis- as well as trans- or gauche-S4 neutral molecules have been identified. It is shown that S3•− and S4 are the main blue and purple chromophores, respectively, whereas the S2•− yellow chromophore and SO3•− blue chromophore play a subordinate role. X-ray diffraction patterns of all samples of sodalite-group minerals from lazurite deposits studied in this work contain superstructure reflections which indicate different kinds of incommensurate modulation of the structures. Indicator minerals (IM) have been used in the research of gemstone and base metals for over 100 years. IMs are a main source of information about the occurrence of deposits, hydrothermal and weathering changes, as well as bedrock source and type. Since 2013, base metal mineral exploration has taken place on New Guinea Island (the Indonesian part). The analysis of chromian spinels as IM in beach and river sediments led to the discovery of rich chromian-bearing deposits in the Botawa River sediments. The dominant detrital minerals include chromian spinels, olivine, pyroxenes and serpentine. The source of chromian spinels, olivine and pyroxenes are most likely peridotites from the Earth's mantle zone of the ophiolite series, generated under supra-subduction conditions. The terrigenous deposits contain metamorphic minerals, such as staurolites, andalusites, epidotes, amphiboles and fragments of micas, quartz and chlorite schists. Using ICP-MS analysis of the beach sands, the concentration of Cr2O3 was determined to be at the level of 1.17%, while in the heavy minerals concentrate from the Botawa River sediment, the content of Cr2O3 amounts to 24.83%. Pegmatites are known to be a source of several (>50) gem-quality minerals [[4]]; and in the present Special Issue, three works related to gems and pegmatites are published [[6]]. Ruby is the red variety and sapphire is the blue variety, while all other coloured corundums are called fancy sapphires and need a colour prefix (e.g., pink sapphire, yellow sapphire). Syngenetic zircon inclusions of magmatic origin were found in these sapphires; however, a few of the measured elements using LA-ICP-MS show that some of these sapphires also fall into the range for "metamorphic" sapphires (e.g., Ga/Mg < 0.8). Voudouris et al. [[36]] offer an overview of collector and gem-quality mineral occurrences from Greece, relating them to various geological environments such as regional metamorphic-metasomatic, alpine-type fissures, plutonic-subvolcanic intrusions and pegmatites, zones of contact metamorphism, and peripheral volcanic rocks. The Boqueirão granitic pegmatite, alias Alto da Cabeça pegmatite, is situated in Borborema Pegmatitic Province (BPP) in Northeast Brazil. This pegmatitic province hosts globally important reserves of tantalum and beryllium, as well as significant quantities of gemstones, including aquamarine, morganite, and the high-quality turquoise-blue "Paraíba Elbaite". The studied lithium-cesium-tantalum Boqueirão granitic pegmatite intruded meta-conglomerates of the Equador Formation during the late Cambrian (502.1 ± 5.8 Ma; 40Ar/39Ar plateau age of muscovite). The pegmatite exhibits a typical zonal mineral pattern with four defined zones (Zone I: muscovite, tourmaline, albite, and quartz; Zone II: K-feldspar (microcline), quartz, and albite; Zone III: perthite crystals (blocky feldspar zone); Zone IV: massive quartz). Huge individual beryl, spodumene, tantalite, and cassiterite crystals are common as well. Microscopic examinations revealed that melt inclusions were entrapped simultaneously with fluid inclusions, suggesting the magmatic–hydrothermal transition. The magmatic–hydrothermal transition affected the evolution of the pegmatite, segregating volatile compounds (H2O, CO2, N2) and elements that preferentially partition into a fluid phase from the viscous silicate melt. Fluid inclusion studies on microcline and associated quartz combined with microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy gave an insight into the P-T-X characteristics of entrapped fluids. The presence of spodumene without other LiAl(SiO3)2 polymorphs and constructed fluid inclusion isochores limited the magmatic–hydrothermal transition at the gem-bearing Boqueirão granitic pegmatite to the temperature range between 300 and 415 °C at a pressure from 1.8 to 3 kbar. Greece contains several gem corundum deposits set within diverse geological settings, mostly within the Rhodope (Xanthi and Drama areas) and Attico-Cycladic (Naxos and Ikaria islands) tectono-metamorphic units. In the Xanthi area, the sapphire (pink, blue to purple) deposits are stratiform, occurring within marble layers alternating with amphibolites. Deep red rubies in the Paranesti-Drama area are restricted to boudinaged lenses of Al-rich metapyroxenites alternating with amphibolites and gneisses. Both occurrences are oriented parallel to the ultra-high pressure/high pressure (UHP/HP) Nestos suture zone. On central Naxos Island, colored sapphires are associated with desilicated granite pegmatites intruding ultramafic lithologies (plumasites), occurring either within the pegmatites themselves or associated metasomatic reaction zones. In contrast, on southern Naxos and Ikaria Islands, blue sapphires occur in extensional fissures within Mesozoic metabauxites hosted in marbles. Mineral inclusions in corundums are in equilibrium and/or postdate corundum crystallization and comprise: spinel and pargasite (Paranesti), spinel, zircon (Xanthi), margarite, zircon, apatite, diaspore, phlogopite and chlorite (Naxos) and chloritoid, ilmenite, hematite, ulvospinel, rutile and zircon (Ikaria). The main chromophore elements within the Greek corundums show a wide range in concentration: the Fe contents vary from (average values) 1099 ppm in the blue sapphires of Xanthi, 424 ppm in the pink sapphires of Xanthi, 2654 ppm for Paranesti rubies, 4326 ppm for the Ikaria sapphires, 3706 for southern Naxos blue sapphires, 4777 for purple and 3301 for pink sapphire from Naxos plumasite, and finally 4677 to 1532 for blue to colorless sapphires from Naxos plumasites, respectively. The Ti concentrations (average values) are very low in rubies from Paranesti (41 ppm), with values of 2871 ppm and 509 in the blue and pink sapphires of Xanthi, respectively, of 1263 ppm for the Ikaria blue sapphires, and 520 ppm, 181 ppm in Naxos purple, pink sapphires, respectively. The blue to colorless sapphires from Naxos plumasites contain 1944 to 264 ppm Ti, respectively. The very high Ti contents of the Xanthi blue sapphires may reflect submicroscopic rutile inclusions. The Cr (average values) ranges from 4 to 691 ppm in the blue, purple and pink colored corundums from Naxos plumasite, is quite fixed (222 ppm) for Ikaria sapphires, ranges from 90 to 297 ppm in the blue and pink sapphires from Xanthi, reaches 9142 ppm in the corundums of Paranesti, with highest values of 15,347 ppm in deep red colored varieties. Each occurrence has both unique mineral assemblage and trace element chemistry (with variable Fe/Mg, Ga/Mg, Ga/Cr and Fe/Ti ratios). Additionally, oxygen isotope compositions confirm their geological typology, i.e., with, respectively δ18O of 4.9 ± 0.2‰ for sapphire in plumasite, 20.5‰ for sapphire in marble and 1‰ for ruby in mafics. The fluid inclusions study evidenced water free CO2 dominant fluids with traces of CH4 or N2, and low CO2 densities (0.46 and 0.67 g/cm3), which were probably trapped after the metamorphic peak. The Paranesti, Xanthi and central Naxos corundum deposits can be classified as metamorphic sensu stricto (s.s.) and metasomatic, respectively, those from southern Naxos and Ikaria display atypical magmatic signature indicating a hydrothermal origin. Mechanical methods to extract undesired graffiti paints on ornamental stones are efficient cleaning methods from an economical point of view. However, effort on the optimization of mechanical cleaning procedures to avoid any damage to the substrate is required for large areas. In this study, two ornamental stones with different composition and texture, and which are commonly used in Spain and Portugal were selected: Granite Vilachán and Limestone Lioz. Moreover, the most common surface finishes were selected-disc-cutting and bush-hammering to simulate the stones found in buildings. Two graffiti spray paints were selected: Blue Ultramarine and Silver Chrome. As cleaning methods, three soft-abrasive blasting procedures: Hydrogommage (mixture of air–water–micro grained silicon abrasive), IBIX (mixture of air–micro grained silicon abrasive), and dry-ice procedure (carbon dioxide ice pellets), were tested at pressure below 0.4 MPa. The methodology for evaluating the effectiveness and harmfulness of each cleaning method was based on stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, color spectrophotometry, and confocal microscopy. As result, IBIX achieved the highest level of graffiti paint extraction although this method increased the surface roughness. Conversely, cleaning based on dry-ice projection did not achieve a satisfactory extraction of the graffiti, mainly of the blue paint. Dry-ice blasting can induce acid environments and IBIX causes dust emission during the projection. Hydrogommage was the most efficient cleaning method amongst the tested procedures, because it induced the lowest roughness change and although the graffiti extraction was not complete, it achieved the highest removal level. Therefore, the most satisfactory cleaning method was that achieving a satisfactory extraction level, minimal modifications of the surface roughness, an economic suitability, an environmental integration, and lower human health risks. Gemstones form in metamorphic, magmatic, and sedimentary rocks. In sedimentary units, these minerals were emplaced by organic and inorganic chemical processes and also found in clastic deposits as a result of weathering, erosion, transport, and deposition leading to what is called the formation of placer deposits. Of the approximately 150 gemstones, roughly 40 can be recovered from placer deposits for a profit after having passed through the "natural processing plant" encompassing the aforementioned stages in an aquatic and aeolian regime. It is mainly the group of heavy minerals that plays the major part among the placer-type gemstones (almandine, apatite, (chrome) diopside, (chrome) tourmaline, chrysoberyl, demantoid, diamond, enstatite, hessonite, hiddenite, kornerupine, kunzite, kyanite, peridote, pyrope, rhodolite, spessartine, (chrome) titanite, spinel, ruby, sapphire, padparaja, tanzanite, zoisite, topaz, tsavorite, and zircon). Silica and beryl, both light minerals by definition (minerals with a density less than 2.8–2.9 g/cm3, minerals with a density greater than this are called heavy minerals, also sometimes abbreviated to "heavies". This technical term has no connotation as to the presence or absence of heavy metals), can also appear in some placers and won for a profit (agate, amethyst, citrine, emerald, quartz, rose quartz, smoky quartz, morganite, and aquamarine, beryl). This is also true for the fossilized tree resin, which has a density similar to the light minerals. Going downhill from the source area to the basin means in effect separating the wheat from the chaff, showcase from the jeweler quality, because only the flawless and strongest contenders among the gemstones survive it all. On the other way round, gem minerals can also be used as pathfinder minerals for primary or secondary gemstone deposits of their own together with a series of other non-gemmy material that is genetically linked to these gemstones in magmatic and metamorphic gem deposits. All placer types known to be relevant for the accumulation of non-gemmy material are also found as trap-site of gemstones (residual, eluvial, colluvial, alluvial, deltaic, aeolian, and marine shelf deposits). Running water and wind can separate minerals according to their physical-chemical features, whereas glaciers can only transport minerals and rocks but do not sort and separate placer-type minerals. Nevertheless till (unconsolidated mineral matter transported by the ice without re-deposition of fluvio-glacial processes) exploration is a technique successfully used to delineate ore bodies of, for example, diamonds. The general parameters that matter during accumulation of gemstones in placers are their intrinsic value controlled by the size and hardness and the extrinsic factors controlling the evolution of the landscape through time such as weathering, erosion, and vertical movements and fertility of the hinterland as to the minerals targeted upon. Morphoclimatic processes take particular effect in the humid tropical and mid humid mid-latitude zones (chemical weathering) and in the periglacial/glacial and the high-altitude/mountain zones, where mechanical weathering and the paleogradients are high. Some tectono-geographic elements such as unconformities, hiatuses, and sequence boundaries (often with incised valley fills and karstic landforms) are also known as planar architectural elements in sequence stratigraphy and applied to marine and correlative continental environments where they play a significant role in forward modeling of gemstone accumulation. The present study on gems and gemstone placers is a reference example of fine-tuning the "Chessboard classification scheme of mineral deposits" (Dill 2010) and a sedimentary supplement to the digital maps that form the core of the overview "Gemstones and geosciences in space and time" (Dill and Weber 2013).
