We present the analysis of the stellar population and star formation history of 181 MIRI selected galaxies at z  = 0 − 3.5 in the massive galaxy cluster field SMACS J0723.3–7327, commonly referred to as SMACS0723, using the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). We combine the data with the JWST Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) catalogue, in conjunction with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR and ACS imaging. We find that the MIRI bands capture PAH features and dust emission, significantly enhancing the accuracy of photometric redshift and measurements of the physical properties of these galaxies. The median photo- z 's of galaxies with MIRI data are found to have a small 0.1 per cent difference from spectroscopic redshifts and reducing the error by 20 per cent. With MIRI data included in SED fits, we find that the measured stellar masses are unchanged, while the star formation rate is slightly lower by 0.1 dex. We also fit the median SED of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies (SFG) separately. MIRI data provides tighter constraints on the AGN contribution, reducing the typical AGN contributions by ∼15 per cent. In addition, we also compare the median SED obtained with and without MIRI, and we find that including MIRI data yields steeper optical and UV slopes, indicating bluer colours, lower dust attenuation, and younger stellar populations. In the future, MIRI/MRS will enhance our understanding by providing more detailed spectral information and allowing for the study of specific emission features and diagnostics associated with AGN. The properties of galaxies in low-density regions of the universe suggest an interplay between galaxy formation and environment. However, the specific reason why this particular large-scale environment influences the evolution of galaxies remains unclear. This paper examines the properties and evolutionary paths of galaxies within cosmic voids using the Illustris TNG300 simulation. The population of void galaxies at z = 0 has a higher star formation rate, a smaller stellar-to-halo-mass ratio, higher gas metallicity, and lower stellar metallicity in comparison with non-void galaxies at fixed stellar mass. Our analysis shows that these differences are mainly due to the characteristics of galaxies classified as satellites, for which the largest differences between void and non-void samples are found. Although the mean number of mergers is similar between void and non-void samples at a fixed stellar mass, void galaxies tend to experience mergers at later times, resulting in a more recent accumulation of accreted stellar mass. While the mean net accreted mass is comparable for high-mass galaxies, low-mass void galaxies tend to exhibit higher fractions of accreted stars than non-void galaxies. This finding challenges the common notion that void galaxies predominantly experience growth with infrequent mergers or interactions. In previous work, we showed that a semi-empirical model in which galaxies in host dark matter haloes are assigned stellar masses via a stellar mass–halo mass (SMHM) relation and sizes (R e) via a linear and tight R e– R h relation can faithfully reproduce the size function of local Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) central galaxies and the strong size evolution of massive galaxies (MGs; M star > 1011.2 M⊙). In this third paper of the series, we focus on the population of satellite MGs. We find that without any additional calibration and irrespective of the exact SMHM relation, fraction of quenched galaxies, or level of stellar stripping, the same model is able to reproduce the local size function of quiescent satellite MGs in SDSS. In addition, the same model can reproduce the puzzling weak dependence of mean size on host halo mass for both central and satellite galaxies. The model also matches the size function of star-forming satellite MGs, after assuming that some of them transform into massive lenticulars in a few Gyr after infalling in the group/cluster environment. However, the vast majority of satellite lenticulars are predicted to form before infall. The R e– R h relation appears to be fundamental to connect galaxies and their host haloes. It is crucial for a deeper understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies in the Universe to study stellar mass (M *) and star formation rate (SFR). Traditionally, astronomers infer the properties of galaxies from spectra, which are highly informative, but expensive and hard to be obtained. Fortunately, modern sky surveys obtained a vast amount of high-spatial-resolution photometric images. The photometric images are obtained relatively economically than spectra, and it is very helpful for related studies if M * and SFR can be estimated from photometric images. Therefore, this paper conducted some preliminary researches and explorations on this regard. We constructed a deep learning model named Galaxy Efficient Network (GalEffNet) for estimating integrated M * and specific star formation rate (sSFR) from Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument galaxy images. The GalEffNet primarily consists of a general feature extraction module and a parameter feature extractor. The research results indicate that the proposed GalEffNet exhibits good performance in estimating M * and sSFR, with σ reaching 0.218 and 0.410 dex. To further assess the robustness of the network, prediction uncertainty was performed. The results show that our model maintains good consistency within a reasonable bias range. We also compared the performance of various network architectures and further tested the proposed scheme using image sets with various resolutions and wavelength bands. Furthermore, we conducted applicability analysis on galaxies of various sizes, redshifts, and morphological types. Modern cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy simulations provide tens of thousands of reasonably realistic synthetic galaxies across cosmic time. However, quantitatively assessing the level of realism of simulated universes in comparison to the real one is difficult. In this paper of the Extracting Reality from Galaxy Observables with Machine Learning series, we utilize contrastive learning to directly compare a large sample of simulated and observed galaxies based on their stellar-light images. This eliminates the need to specify summary statistics and allows to exploit the whole information content of the observations. We produce survey-realistic galaxy mock data sets resembling real Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) observations using the cosmological simulations TNG50 and TNG100. Our focus is on galaxies with stellar masses between 109 and 1012 M⊙ at z  = 0.1–0.4. This allows us to evaluate the realism of the simulated TNG galaxies in comparison to actual HSC observations. We apply the self-supervised contrastive learning method Nearest Neighbour Contrastive Learning to the images from both simulated and observed data sets (g -, r -, i -bands). This results in a 256-dimensional representation space, encoding all relevant observable galaxy properties. First, this allows us to identify simulated galaxies that closely resemble real ones by seeking similar images in this multidimensional space. Even more powerful, we quantify the alignment between the representations of these two image sets, finding that the majority (≳ 70 per cent) of the TNG galaxies align well with observed HSC images. However, a subset of simulated galaxies with larger sizes, steeper Sérsic profiles, smaller Sérsic ellipticities, and larger asymmetries appears unrealistic. We also demonstrate the utility of our derived image representations by inferring properties of real HSC galaxies using simulated TNG galaxies as the ground truth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we use photometric data from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey Data Release 4 survey to identify isolated galaxy pairs and analyse their characteristics and properties. Our results align with previous spectroscopic studies, particularly in luminosity function parameters, suggesting a consistent trait among galaxy systems. Our findings reveal a high fraction of red galaxies across all samples, irrespective of projected distance, velocity difference, or luminosity ratio. We found that the proximity of a neighbour to its central galaxy influences its colour due to environmental effects. We also found that central and neighbour have different behaviours: central galaxies maintain a stable red colour regardless of luminosity, while neighbour colours vary based on luminosity ratios. When the central is significantly brighter, the neighbour tends to be less red. According to our division in red, blue, and mixed pairs, we found evidence of galactic conformity. The red pair fractions increase in closer pairs and in pairs of similar luminosity, indicating shared environments promoting red galaxy formation. Analysing local density, the expected colour–density relation is of course recovered, but it is strongly determined by the stellar mass of the pair. In denser environments, the red pair fractions increase, blue pairs decrease, and for the mixed pairs it depends on their stellar mass: more massive mixed pairs decrease their fraction, whereas the less massive ones increase it. These results shed light on the intricate relationship between galaxy pairs, their characteristics, and environmental influences on colour, providing insights into their evolutionary histories. We present the 'Cosmological Jellyfish' project – a citizen-science classification program to identify jellyfish (JF) galaxies within the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations. JF are satellite galaxies that exhibit long trailing gas features – 'tails' – extending from their stellar body. Their distinctive morphology arises due to ram-pressure stripping (RPS) as they move through the background gaseous medium. Using the TNG50 and TNG100 simulations, we construct a sample of |$\sim 80\, 000$| satellite galaxies spanning an unprecedented range of stellar masses, |$10^{8.3}{-}10^{12.3}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , and host masses, |$M_\mathrm{200,c}=10^{10.4}{-}10^{14.6}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$| back to z  = 2. Based on this sample, |$\sim 90\, 000$| galaxy images were presented to volunteers in the citizen-science Zooniverse platform, who were asked to determine whether the galaxy image resembles a JF. Based on volunteer votes, each galaxy received a score determining if it is a JF or not. This paper describes the project, the inspected satellite sample, the methodology, and the classification process that resulted in a data set of 5307 visually identified JF galaxies. We find that JF is common in nearly all group- and cluster-sized systems, with the JF fraction increasing with host mass and decreasing with satellite stellar mass. We highlight JF galaxies in three relatively unexplored regimes: low-mass hosts of |$M_\mathrm{200,c}\sim 10^{11.5}{-}10^{13}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , radial positions within hosts exceeding the virial radius R 200, c, and at high redshift up to z  = 2. This paper presents the third data release of the INvestigating Stellar Population In RElics (INSPIRE) project, comprising 52 ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs) observed with the X-Shooter spectrograph. We measure integrated stellar velocity dispersion, [Mg/Fe] abundances, ages, and metallicities for all the INSPIRE objects. We thus infer star formation histories and confirm the existence of a degree of relicness (DoR), defined in terms of the fraction of stellar mass formed by z  = 2, the time at which a galaxy has assembled 75 per cent of its mass, and the final assembly time. Objects with a high DoR assembled their stellar mass at early epochs, while low-DoR objects show a non-negligible fraction of later formed populations and hence a spread in ages and metallicities. A higher DoR correlates with larger [Mg/Fe], supersolar metallicity, and larger velocity dispersion values. The 52 UMCGs span a large range of DoR from 0.83 to 0.06, with 38 of them having formed more than 75  per cent of their mass by z  = 2. Of these, nine are extreme relics (DoR>0.7), since they formed the totality (⁠|$\gt 99~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of their stellar mass by redshift z  = 2. The remaining 14 UCMGs cannot be considered relics, as they are characterized by more extended star formation histories. With INSPIRE  we built the first sizeable sample of relics outside the local Universe, up to z ∼ 0.4, increasing the number of confirmed relics by a factor of >10, and opening up an important window to explain the mass assembly of massive galaxies in the high- z Universe. The current properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) in the nearby Universe are a consequence of an evolutionary history ruled by accretion and disruption processes. The analysis of scaling relations for GCSs is crucial for understanding the relevance of different physical processes involved in their origin and subsequent survival. In this work, radial profiles are calculated for a sample of GCSs associated with nearby massive galaxies. This is supplemented with results from our previous papers, achieving a total sample of 53 GCSs with radial profiles homogeneously calculated, and spanning more than two orders of magnitude in stellar mass of the host galaxy. Scaling relations involving different parameters of the GCSs are obtained for the entire sample, and their significance in terms of different scenarios is considered. When a galaxy falls into a cluster, its outermost parts are the most affected by the environment. In this paper, we are interested in studying the influence of a dense environment on different galaxy's components to better understand how this affects the evolution of galaxies. We use, as laboratory for this study, the Hydra cluster which is close to virialization; yet it still shows evidence of substructures. We present a multiwavelength bulge–disc decomposition performed simultaneously in 12 bands from S-PLUS (Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey) data for 52 galaxies brighter than mr  = 16. We model the galaxies with a Sérsic profile for the bulge and an exponential profile for the disc. We find that the smaller, more compact, and bulge-dominated galaxies tend to exhibit a redder colour at a fixed stellar mass. This suggests that the same mechanisms (ram-pressure and tidal stripping) that are causing the compaction in these galaxies are also causing them to stop forming stars. The bulge size is unrelated to the galaxy's stellar mass, while the disc size increases with greater stellar mass, indicating the dominant role of the disc in the overall galaxy mass–size relation found. Furthermore, our analysis of the environment unveils that quenched galaxies are prevalent in regions likely associated with substructures. However, these areas also harbour a minority of star-forming galaxies, primarily resulting from galaxy interactions. Lastly, we find that ∼37 per cent of the galaxies exhibit bulges that are bluer than their discs, indicative of an outside-in quenching process in this type of dense environments. This paper investigates a hypothesis proposed in previous research relating neutron star (NS) mass and its dark matter (DM) accumulation. As DM accumulates, NS mass decreases, predicting lower NS masses toward the Galactic centre. Due to limited NSs data near the Galactic centre, we examine NSs located within DM clumps. Using the CLUMPY code simulations, we determine the DM clumps distribution, with masses from 10 to 108 M⊙ and scales from 10−3 to 10 kpc. These clumps' DM exhibit a peak at the centre, tapering toward the outskirts, resembling our Galaxy's DM distribution. We analyse these DM clumps' NS mass variations, considering diverse DM particle masses and galaxy types. We find relatively stable NS mass within 0.01 – 5 kpc from the clump centre. This stability supports the initial hypothesis, particularly for NSs located beyond 0.01 kpc from the clump centre, where NS mass reaches a plateau around 0.1 kpc. Nevertheless, NS mass near the clump's periphery reveals spatial dependence: NS position within DM clumps influences its mass in Milky Way-type galaxies. Moreover, this dependence varies with the DM model considered. In summary, our study investigates the proposed link between NS mass and DM accumulation by examining NSs within DM clumps. While NS mass remains stable at certain distances from the clump centre, spatial dependencies arise near the clump's outer regions, contingent on the specific DM model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The estimation of galaxy stellar masses depends on the assumed prior of the star-formation history (SFH) and spatial scale of the analysis (spatially resolved versus integrated scales). In this paper, we connect the prescription of the SFH in the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to spatially resolved scales (∼kpc) to shed light on the systematics involved when estimating stellar masses. Specifically, we fit the integrated photometry of ∼970 massive (log (M⋆/M⊙) = 9.8–11.5), intermediate redshift (z  = 0.5–2.0) galaxies with PROSPECTOR , assuming both exponentially declining tau model and flexible SFHs. We complement these fits with the results of spatially resolved SFH estimates obtained by pixel-by-pixel SED fitting, which assume tau models for individual pixels. These spatially resolved SFHs show a large diversity in shapes, which can largely be accounted for by the flexible SFHs with PROSPECTOR. The differences in the stellar masses from those two approaches are overall in good agreement (average difference of ∼0.07 dex). Contrarily, the simpler tau model SFHs typically miss the oldest episode of star formation, leading to an underestimation of the stellar mass by ∼0.3 dex. We further compare the derived global specific star-formation rate (sSFR), the mass-weighted stellar age (t50), and the star-formation time-scale (τSF) obtained from the different SFH approaches. We conclude that the spatially resolved scales within galaxies motivate a flexible SFH on global scales to account for the diversity of SFHs and counteract the effects of outshining of older stellar populations by younger ones. We present a pilot study of the atomic neutral hydrogen gas (H  i) content of ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates. In this paper, we use the pre-pilot Eridanus field data from the Widefield ASKAP L -band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey to search for H  i in UDG candidates found in the Systematically Measuring Ultra-diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We narrow down to 78 SMUDGes UDG candidates within the maximum radial extents of the Eridanus subgroups for this study. Most SMUDGes UDGs candidates in this study have effective radii smaller than 1.5 kpc and thus fail to meet the defining size threshold. We only find one H  i detection, which we classify as a low-surface-brightness dwarf. Six putative UDGs are H  i -free. We show the overall distribution of SMUDGes UDG candidates on the size–luminosity relation and compare them with low-mass dwarfs on the atomic gas fraction versus stellar mass scaling relation. There is no correlation between gas-richness and colour indicating that colour is not the sole parameter determining their H  i content. The evolutionary paths that drive galaxy morphological changes and UDG formation channels are likely the additional factors to affect the H  i content of putative UDGs. The actual numbers of UDGs for the Eridanus and NGC 1332 subgroups are consistent with the predicted abundance of UDGs and the halo virial mass relation, except for the NGC 1407 subgroup, which has a smaller number of UDGs than the predicted number. This paper presents a newly established sample of 19 unique galaxies and galaxy groups at redshift z  = 0.89–1.21 in six QSO fields from the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS), designated as the CUBSz1 sample. In this sample, nine galaxies or galaxy groups show absorption features, while the other 10 systems exhibit 2σ upper limits of |$\log N (\rm{He\,{\small I}})/\mbox{${\rm cm^{-2}}$}\lesssim 13.5$| and |$\log N (\rm{O\,{\small V}})/\mbox{${\rm cm^{-2}}$}\lesssim 13.3$|⁠. Environmental properties of the galaxies, including galaxy overdensities, the total stellar mass and gravitational potential summed over all neighbours, and the presence of local ionizing sources, are found to have a significant impact on the observed CGM absorption properties. Specifically, massive galaxies and galaxies in overdense regions exhibit a higher rate of incidence of absorption. The CGM absorption properties in galaxy groups appear to be driven by the galaxy closest to the QSO sightline, rather than by the most massive galaxy or by mass-weighted properties. We introduce a total projected gravitational potential ψ, defined as −ψ/ G  = ∑ M halo/ d proj summed over all group members, to characterize the galaxy environment. This projected gravitational potential correlates linearly with the maximum density detected in each sightline (i.e. a power-law slope of |$0.95_{-0.14}^{+0.15}$|⁠), consistent with higher pressure gas being confined in deeper gravitational potential wells. In addition, we find that the radial profile of cool gas density exhibits a decline from the inner regions to the outskirts, and the amplitude is consistent with the cool gas being in pressure balance with the hot halo. Finally, we note that the ionizing flux from nearby galaxies can elevate the N (H  i)/ N (He  i) ratio, which provides a unique diagnostic of possible local sources contributing to the ionizing radiation field. This paper reports detections of Hα emission and stellar continuum out to approximately 30 physical kiloparsecs, and Hα directionality in the outskirts of Hα-emitting galaxies (Hα emitters) at |$z$| = 0.4. This research adopts narrow-band selected Hα emitters at |$z$| = 0.4 from the emission-line object catalog by Hayashi et al. (2020, PASJ, 72, 86), which is based on data in the Deep and Ultradeep layers of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. Deep narrow- and broad-band images of 8625 Hα emitters across 16.8 deg2 enable us to construct deep composite emission-line and continuum images. The stacked images show diffuse Hα emission (down to ∼5 × 10−20 erg s−1 cm−2 arcsec−2) and stellar continuum (down to ∼5 × 10−22 erg s−1 cm−2 Å−1 arcsec−2), extending beyond 10 kpc at stellar masses >109  |$M_\odot$|⁠ , parts of which may originate from stellar halos. Those radial profiles are broadly consistent with each other. In addition, we obtain a dependence of the Hα emission on the position angle because relatively higher Hα equivalent width has been detected along the minor-axis towards galaxy disks. While the Hα directionality could be attributed to biconical outflows, further research with hydrodynamic simulations is highly demanded to pin down the exact cause. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is the first paper in our series on the combined analysis of the Dynamics and stellar Population (DynPop) for the MaNGA survey in the final SDSS Data Release 17 (DR17). Here, we present a catalogue of dynamically determined quantities for over 10 000 nearby galaxies based on integral-field stellar kinematics from the MaNGA survey. The dynamical properties are extracted using the axisymmetric Jeans Anisotropic Modelling (JAM) method, which was previously shown to be the most accurate for this kind of study. We assess systematic uncertainties using eight dynamical models with different assumptions. We use two orientations of the velocity ellipsoid: either cylindrically aligned JAMcyl or spherically aligned JAMsph. We also make four assumptions for the models' dark versus luminous matter distributions: (1) mass-follows-light, (2) free NFW dark halo, (3) cosmologically constrained NFW halo, (4) generalized NFW dark halo, i.e. with free inner slope. In this catalogue, we provide the quantities related to the mass distributions (e.g. the density slopes and enclosed mass within a sphere of a given radius for total mass, stellar mass, and dark matter mass components). We also provide the complete models which can be used to compute the full luminous and mass distribution of each galaxy. Additionally, we visually assess the qualities of the models to help with model selections. We estimate the observed scatter in the measured quantities which decreases as expected with improvements in quality. Galaxy populations are known to exhibit a strong colour bimodality, corresponding to blue star-forming and red quiescent subpopulations. The relative abundance of the two populations has been found to vary with stellar mass and environment. In this paper, we explore the effect of environment considering different types of measurements. We choose a sample of 49 911 galaxies with 0.05 < z < 0.18 from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey. We study the dependence of the fraction of red galaxies on different measures of the local environment as well as the large-scale 'geometric' environment defined by density gradients in the surrounding cosmic web. We find that the red galaxy fraction varies with the environment at fixed stellar mass. The red fraction depends more strongly on local environmental measures than on large-scale geometric environment measures. By comparing the different environmental densities, we show that no density measurement fully explains the observed environmental red fraction variation, suggesting the different measures of environmental density contain different information. We test whether the local environmental measures, when combined together, can explain all the observed environmental red fraction variation. The geometric environment has a small residual effect, and this effect is larger for voids than any other type of geometric environment. This could provide a test of the physics applied to cosmological-scale galaxy evolution simulations as it combines large-scale effects with local environmental impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is often implicated as a mechanism that leads to the quenching of galactic star formation. However, AGN-driven quenching is challenging to reconcile with observations that AGN hosts tend to harbour equal (or even excess) amounts of gas compared with inactive galaxies of similar stellar mass. In this paper, we investigate whether AGN feedback happens on sub-galactic (kpc) scales, an effect that might be difficult to detect with global gas measurements. Using kpc-scale measurements of molecular gas (⁠|$\Sigma _{\rm H_2}$|⁠) and stellar mass (Σ⋆) surface densities, taken from the Extragalactic Data base for Galaxy Evolution–Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey, we show that the gas fractions of central AGN regions are typically a factor of ∼ 2 lower than those in star-forming regions. Based on four galaxies with the best spaxel statistics, the difference between AGN and star-forming gas fractions is seen even within a given galaxy, indicating that AGN feedback is able to deplete the molecular gas reservoir in the central few kpc. We present wide-field (167 deg2) weak lensing mass maps from the Hyper Supreme-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). We compare these weak lensing based dark matter maps with maps of the distribution of the stellar mass associated with luminous red galaxies. We find a strong correlation between these two maps with a correlation coefficient of ρ=0.54±0.03 (for a smoothing size of 8'). This correlation is detected even with a smaller smoothing scale of 2' (ρ=0.34±0.01). This detection is made uniquely possible because of the high source density of the HSC-SSP weak lensing survey (n¯∼25 arcmin−2). We also present a variety of tests to demonstrate that our maps are not significantly affected by systematic effects. By using the photometric redshift information associated with source galaxies, we reconstruct a three-dimensional mass map. This three-dimensional mass map is also found to correlate with the three-dimensional galaxy mass map. Cross-correlation tests presented in this paper demonstrate that the HSC-SSP weak lensing mass maps are ready for further science analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present an attempt to estimate the redshift evolution of the molecular to neutral gas mass ratio within galaxies (at fixed stellar mass). For a sample of five nearby grand design spirals located on the main-sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies, we exploit maps at 500 pc resolution of stellar mass and star formation rate (M ⋆ and SFR). For the same cells, we also have estimates of the neutral (M H  i ) and molecular (⁠|$M_{\rm H_2}$|⁠) gas masses. To compute the redshift evolution, we exploit two relations: (i) one between the molecular-to-neutral mass ratio and the total gas mass (M gas), whose scatter shows a strong dependence with the distance from the spatially resolved MS, and (ii) the one between |$\log (M_{\rm {H_2}}/M_{\star })$| and log (M H  i / M ⋆). For both methods, we and that |$M_{\rm H_2}$| / M H  i within the optical radius slightly decreases with redshift, contrary to common expectations of galaxies becoming progressively more dominated by molecular hydrogen at high redshifts. Red geysers are a specific type of quiescent galaxy, denoted by twin jets emerging from their galactic centres. These bisymmetric jets possibly inject energy and heat into the surrounding material, effectively suppressing star formation by stabilizing cool gas. In order to confirm the presence and evolutionary consequences of these jets, this paper discusses the scaling, stacking, and conversion of 21-cm H  i flux data sourced from the H  i -MaNGA survey into H  i gas-to-stellar mass (G/S) spectra. Our samples were dominated by non-detections, or galaxies with weak H  i signals, and consequently by H  i upper limits. The stacking technique discussed successfully resolved emission features in both the red geyser G/S spectrum and the control sample G/S spectrum. From these stacked spectra, we find that on average, red geyser galaxies have G/S of 0.086 ± 0.011 (random) + 0.029 (systematic), while non-red geyser galaxies of similar stellar mass have a G/S ratio of 0.039 ± 0.018 (random) + 0.013 (systematic). Therefore, we find no statistically significant evidence that the H  i content of red geysers is different from the general quiescent population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first deep-field observations of the JWST have immediately yielded a surprisingly large number of very high redshift candidates, pushing the frontier of observability well beyond z ≳ 10. We here present a detailed SED-fitting analysis of the 10 gravitationally lensed z ∼ 9–16 galaxy candidates detected behind the galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3−7327 in a previous paper using the BEAGLE tool. Our analysis makes use of dynamical considerations to place limits on the ages of these galaxies and of all three published SL models of the cluster to account for lensing systematics. We find the majority of these galaxies to have relatively low stellar masses |$M_{\star }\sim 10^7-10^8\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$| and young ages t age ∼ 10–100 Myr but with a few higher mass exceptions (⁠|$M_{\star }\sim 10^9\rm{-}10^{10}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠) due to Balmer-break detections at z ∼ 9–10. Because of their very blue UV-slopes, down to β ∼ −3, all of the galaxies in our sample have extremely low dust attenuations AV ≲ 0.02. Placing the measured parameters into relation, we find a very shallow M ⋆ − M UV-slope and high sSFRs above the main sequence of star formation with no significant redshift-evolution in either relation. This is in agreement with the bright UV luminosities measured for these objects and indicates that we are naturally selecting UV-bright galaxies that are undergoing intense star formation at the time they are observed. Finally, we discuss the robustness of our high-redshift galaxy sample regarding low-redshift interlopers and conclude that low-redshift solutions can safely be ruled out for roughly half of the sample, including the highest redshift galaxies at z ∼ 12–16. Galaxies display several well-behaved scaling relations between their properties, such as the star formation rate–stellar mass relation (the main sequence, MS) and the stellar mass–halo mass relation (SHMR). In principle, these scaling relations could imply different star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies and different constraints on galaxy formation physics. In this paper, we derive the SFHs of galaxies by assuming that they always follow the SHMRs at different redshifts and use an empirical model to constrain key processes in their baryon cycle. It is found that, besides cold accretion due to halo growth, outflow of gas produced by stellar feedback has to be recycled to sustain the derived SFHs of galaxies. The recycled fraction is strongly affected by the baryon fraction in accreted low-mass haloes and the mass loading factor that quantifies the ratio between the galactic outflow rate and star formation rate. Our fiducial model predicts that around 20–60 per cent of outflow is recycled in |$\sim 0.5\!-\!4\, \mathrm{Gyr}$|⁠ , while simulations predict a slightly higher recycle fraction and a lower recycle time. We argue that strong constraints on the baryon cycle process can be obtained from future observation of the circum-galactic medium (CGM) of galaxies, such as the gas cooling rate of CGM. We also find that the implied SFHs from the SHMRs indicate that galaxies stay on the MS only for part of their lifetimes. Our model reproduces the evolution of the mass–metallicity relation as well. A fundamental prediction of the ΛCDM cosmology is the hierarchical build-up of structure and therefore the successive merging of galaxies into more massive ones. As one can only observe galaxies at one specific time in the cosmic history, this merger history remains, in principle, unobservable. By using the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project, we show that it is possible to infer the unobservable stellar assembly and merger history of central galaxies from their observable properties by using machine learning techniques. In particular, in this first paper of ERGO-ML (Extracting Reality from Galaxy Observables with Machine Learning), we choose a set of seven observable integral properties of galaxies to infer the stellar ex-situ fraction, the average merger lookback times and mass ratios, and the lookback time and stellar mass of the last major merger. To infer the posterior distribution for these parameters and hence estimate the uncertainties in the predictions, we use a conditional Invertible Neural Network (cINN). We find that the stellar ex-situ fraction and the time of the last major merger are well-determined by the selected set of observables, that the mass-weighted merger mass ratio is unconstrained, and that, beyond stellar mass, stellar morphology and stellar age are the most informative properties. Finally, we show that the cINN recovers the remaining unexplained scatter and secondary cross-correlations. Overall, this is a first step towards a tool that can be applied to large galaxy surveys in order to infer unobservable properties of the galaxies' past, enabling empirical studies of galaxy evolution enriched by cosmological simulations. Recent years have seen growing interest in post-processing cosmological simulations with radiative transfer codes to predict observable fluxes for simulated galaxies. However, this can be slow, and requires a number of assumptions in cases where simulations do not resolve the interstellar medium (ISM). Zoom-in simulations better resolve the detailed structure of the ISM and the geometry of stars and gas; however, statistics are limited due to the computational cost of simulating even a single halo. In this paper, we make use of a set of high-resolution, cosmological zoom-in simulations of massive (⁠|$M_{\star }\gtrsim 10^{10.5}\, \rm {M_{\odot }}$| at z = 2), star-forming galaxies from the FIRE suite. We run the skirt radiative transfer code on hundreds of snapshots in the redshift range 1.5 < z < 5 and calibrate a power-law scaling relation between dust mass, star formation rate, and |$870\, \mu \rm {m}$| flux density. The derived scaling relation shows encouraging consistency with observational results from the sub-millimetre-selected AS2UDS sample. We extend this to other wavelengths, deriving scaling relations between dust mass, stellar mass, star formation rate, and redshift and sub-millimetre flux density at observed-frame wavelengths between |$\sim \! 340$| and |$\sim \! 870\, \mu \rm {m}$|⁠. We then apply the scaling relations to galaxies drawn from EAGLE, a large box cosmological simulation. We show that the scaling relations predict EAGLE sub-millimetre number counts that agree well with previous results that were derived using far more computationally expensive radiative transfer techniques. Our scaling relations can be applied to other simulations and semi-analytical or semi-empirical models to generate robust and fast predictions for sub-millimetre number counts. In the standard disc galaxy formation model, the sizes of galactic discs are tightly related to the spin parameters λ of their dark matter haloes. The model has been wildly adopted by various semi-analytical galaxy formation models which have been extremely successful to interpret a large body of observational data. However, the size–λ correlation was rarely seen in most modern hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation. In this short paper, we make use of 4 sets of large hydrodynamical simulations to explore the size–spin parameter relation with a large sample of simulated disc galaxies and compare it with a popular disc galaxy formation model of Mo et al. (1998). Intriguingly, galactic sizes correlate with spin parameters of their dark matter haloes in the simulations developed by the IllustrisTNG collaborations, albeit the relation does not always agree with prediction of MMW98 model overall stellar mass range we examined. There is also a size–spin correlation for the Milky Way analogies in the EAGLE simulations, while it is relatively weaker than that of the IllustrisTNG counterparts. For the dwarfs in the simulations from the EAGLE collaboration, there is NULL correlation. We conclude that either the detailed subgrid physics or hydrodynamics solvers account for the size-spin parameter relation, which will be explored in our future work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the framework of an ongoing project aimed at searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in nearby voids, we conducted spectroscopy with the 11-m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) of 26 candidates, preselected in the first paper of this series (PEPK19). For 23 of them, we detected oxygen lines, allowing us to estimate the gas O/H ratio. For 10 of them, the oxygen abundance is found to be very low, in the range of 12 + log (O/H) = 6.95–7.30 dex. Of those, four void dwarfs have 12 + log (O/H) < 7.19, or Z < Z⊙/30. For the majority of observed galaxies, the faint line [O  iii ] λ4363 Å used to estimate O/H with the direct T e method appeared either too noisy or was not detected. We therefore use the semi-empirical method of Izotov & Thuan for these spectra, or, when applicable, the new 'Strong line' method of Izotov et al. We present and discuss the results for all void dwarfs observed in this work. We also compare their O/H values with O/H values of ∼140 void galaxies available from our recent papers. We address the properties of the newly found unusual void XMP dwarfs and compare them with those for 10 known prototype void XMP objects. The latter small group is outstanding based on their very small mass fraction of stars (only 0.01–0.02 of the baryonic mass), the blue colours of stars in the outer body indicating a non-cosmological age for the main star-forming episode), and the low gas metallicity (several times lower than expected for their luminosity). This paper presents multiwavelength photometric catalogues of the last two Hubble Frontier Fields (HFFs), the massive galaxy clusters Abell 370 and RXC J2248.7−4431. The photometry ranges from imaging performed on the Hubble Space Telescope to ground-based Very Large Telescope and Spitzer /Infrared Array Camera, in collaboration with the ASTRODEEP team, and using the ASTRODEEP pipeline. While the main purpose of this paper is to release the catalogues, we also perform, as a proof of concept, a brief analysis of z > 6 objects selected using dropout method, as well as spectroscopically confirmed sources and multiple images in both clusters. While dropout methods yield a sample of high- z galaxies, the addition of longer wavelength data reveals that as expected the samples have substantial contamination at the ∼30–45 per cent level by dusty galaxies at lower redshifts. Furthermore, we show that spectroscopic redshifts are still required to unambiguously determine redshifts of multiply imaged systems. Finally, the now publicly available ASTRODEEP catalogues were combined for all HFFs and used to explore stellar properties of a large sample of 20 000 galaxies across a large photometric redshift range. The powerful magnification provided by the HFF clusters allows for an exploration of the properties of galaxies with intrinsic stellar masses as low as M * ≳ 107 M⊙ and intrinsic star formation rates ∼0.1–1 M⊙ yr−1 at z  > 6. The outer light (stellar haloes) of massive galaxies has recently emerged as a possible low scatter tracer of dark matter halo mass. To test the robustness of outer light measurements across different data sets, we compare the 1D azimuthally averaged surface brightness profiles of massive galaxies using four independent data sets: the Hyper Suprime-Cam survey (HSC), the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS), the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and the Dragonfly Wide Field Survey (Dragonfly). We test the sky subtraction and proposed corrections for HSC and DECaLS. For galaxies at z < 0.05, Dragonfly has the best control of systematics, reaching surface brightness levels of μ r ≈ 30 mag arcsec−2. At 0.19 < z < 0.50, HSC can reliably recover individual surface brightness profiles to μ r ≈ 28.5 mag arcsec−2 (R  = 100–150 kpc in semimajor axis). In a statistical sense, DECaLS agrees with HSC to R > 200 kpc. DECaLS and HSC measurements of the stellar mass contained within 100 kpc agree within 0.05 dex. Finally, we use weak lensing to show that measurements of outer light with DECaLS at 0.19 < z < 0.50 show a similar promise as HSC as a low scatter proxy of halo mass. The tests and results from this paper represent an important step forward for accurate measurements of the outer light of massive galaxies and demonstrate that outer light measurements from DECam imaging will be a promising method for finding galaxy clusters. We present GLADE+, an extended version of the GLADE galaxy catalogue introduced in our previous paper for multimessenger searches with advanced gravitational-wave detectors. GLADE+ combines data from six separate but not independent astronomical catalogues: the GWGC, 2MPZ, 2MASS XSC, HyperLEDA, and WISExSCOSPZ galaxy catalogues, and the SDSS-DR16Q quasar catalogue. To allow corrections of CMB-frame redshifts for peculiar motions, we calculated peculiar velocities along with their standard deviations of all galaxies having B -band magnitude data within redshift z  = 0.05 using the 'Bayesian Origin Reconstruction from Galaxies' formalism. GLADE+ is complete up to luminosity distance |$d_L=47^{+4}_{-2}$| Mpc in terms of the total expected B -band luminosity of galaxies, and contains all of the brightest galaxies giving 90 per cent of the total B -band and K -band luminosity up to dL ≃ 130 Mpc. We include estimations of stellar masses and individual binary neutron star merger rates for galaxies with W 1 magnitudes. These parameters can help in ranking galaxies in a given gravitational wave localization volume in terms of their likelihood of being hosts, thereby possibly reducing the number of pointings and total integration time needed to find the electromagnetic counterpart. We introduce serra , a suite of zoom-in high-resolution (⁠|$1.2\times 10^4 \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠ , |$\simeq 25\, {\rm {pc}}$| at z  = 7.7) cosmological simulations including non-equilibrium chemistry and on-the-fly radiative transfer. The outputs are post-processed to derive galaxy ultraviolet (UV) + far-infrared (FIR) continuum and emission line properties. Results are compared with available multiwavelength data to constrain the physical properties [e.g. star formation rates (SFRs), stellar/gas/dust mass, metallicity] of high-redshift 6 ≲ z ≲ 15 galaxies. This flagship paper focuses on the z  = 7.7 sub-sample, including 202 galaxies with stellar mass |$10^7 \, {\rm M}_{\odot }\lesssim M_\star \lesssim 5\times 10^{10}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠ , and specific star formation rate ranging from |${\rm sSFR} \sim 100\, {\rm Gyr}^{-1}$| in young, low-mass galaxies to |$\sim 10\, {\rm Gyr}^{-1}$| for older, massive ones. At this redshift, serra galaxies are typically bursty, i.e. they are located above the Schmidt–Kennicutt relation by a factor |$\kappa _s = 3.03^{+4.9}_{-1.8}$|⁠ , consistent with recent findings for [O  iii ] and [C  ii ] emitters at high z. They also show relatively large InfraRed eXcess (IRX = L FIR/ L UV) values as a result of their compact/clumpy morphology effectively blocking the stellar UV luminosity. Note that this conclusion might be affected by insufficient spatial resolution at the molecular cloud level. We confirm that early galaxies lie on the standard [C  ii ] |$\!-\!\rm SFR$| relation; their observed L [OIII]/ L [CII] ≃ 1–10 ratios can be reproduced by a part of the serra galaxies without the need of a top-heavy initial mass function and/or anomalous C/O abundances. [O  i ] line intensities are similar to local ones, making ALMA high- z detections challenging but feasible (⁠|$\sim 6\, \rm h$| for an SFR of |$50\, \, {\rm M}_{\odot }\, {\rm yr}^{-1}$|⁠). The stellar surface density within the inner 1 kpc (Σ1) has become a popular tool for understanding the growth of galaxies and its connection with the quenching of star formation. The emerging picture suggests that building a central dense core is a necessary condition for quenching. However, it is not clear whether changes in Σ1 trace changes in stellar kinematics and the growth of dispersion-dominated bulges. In this paper, we combine imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with stellar kinematics from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field unit and Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory surveys to quantify the correlation between Σ1 and the proxy for stellar spin parameter within one effective radius (λre) for 1599 nearby galaxies. We show that, on the star-forming main sequence and at fixed stellar mass, changes in Σ1 are mirrored by changes in λre. While forming stars, main-sequence galaxies remain rotationally-dominated systems, with their Σ1 increasing but their stellar spin staying either constant or slightly increasing. The picture changes below the main sequence, where Σ1 and λre are no longer correlated. Passive systems show a narrower range of Σ1, but a wider range of λre compared to star-forming galaxies. Our results indicate that, from a structural point of view, passive galaxies are a more heterogeneous population than star-forming systems, and may have followed a variety of evolutionary paths. This also suggests that, if dispersion-dominated bulges still grow significantly at z ∼ 0, this generally takes place during, or after, the quenching phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we investigate how massive central galaxies cease their star formation by comparing theoretical predictions from cosmological simulations: EAGLE, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG with observations of the local Universe from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our machine learning (ML) classification reveals supermassive black hole mass (M BH) as the most predictive parameter in determining whether a galaxy is star forming or quenched at redshift z  = 0 in all three simulations. This predicted consequence of active galactic nucleus (AGN) quenching is reflected in the observations, where it is true for a range of indirect estimates of M BH via proxies as well as its dynamical measurements. Our partial correlation analysis shows that other galactic parameters lose their strong association with quiescence, once their correlations with M BH are accounted for. In simulations, we demonstrate that it is the integrated power output of the AGN, rather than its instantaneous activity, which causes galaxies to quench. Finally, we analyse the change in molecular gas content of galaxies from star-forming to passive populations. We find that both gas fractions (f gas) and star formation efficiencies (SFEs) decrease upon transition to quiescence in the observations but SFE is more predictive than f gas in the ML passive/star-forming classification. These trends in the SDSS are most closely recovered in IllustrisTNG and are in direct contrast with the predictions made by Illustris. We conclude that a viable AGN feedback prescription can be achieved by a combination of preventative feedback and turbulence injection which together quench star formation in central galaxies. In a galaxy redshift survey, the objects to be targeted for spectra are selected from a photometrically observed sample. The observed magnitudes and colours of galaxies in this parent sample will be affected by their peculiar velocities, through relativistic Doppler and relativistic beaming effects. In this paper, we compute the resulting expected changes in galaxy photometry. The magnitudes of the relativistic effects are a function of redshift, stellar mass, galaxy velocity and velocity direction. We focus on the CMASS sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), which is selected on the basis of colour and magnitude. We find that 0.10 per cent of the sample (~585 galaxies) has been scattered into the targeted region of colour-magnitude space by relativistic effects, and conversely 0.09 per cent of the sample (~532 galaxies) has been scattered out. Observational consequences of these effects include an asymmetry in clustering statistics, which we explore in a companion paper. Here, we compute a set of weights that can be used to remove the effect of modulations introduced into the density field inferred from a galaxy sample. The galaxy luminosity function and galaxy stellar mass function are fundamental statistics in the testing of galaxy formation models. Theoretical predictions based on cosmological simulations can deviate from observations, especially at the bright and faint ends. In this case, the mismatch may come from missing physics, oversimplified or inaccurate model recipes, or inappropriate methods of extracting basic astrophysical quantities from simulations. The latter is a crucial aspect to consider to avoid misleading conclusions when comparing simulations with observations. In this paper, we apply a new method to produce 'observed' galaxies identified in mock imaging of hydrodynamical simulations. We generate low-redshift mock galaxies from the TNG100-1 simulation of IllustrisTNG and analyse them using standard 'observational' techniques to extract their main structural parameters. We show that our technique can produce realistic surface-brightness distributions of the simulated galaxies, including classical morphological substructures, such as spiral arms and bars. In particular, we find a very good agreement of the total luminosity and stellar mass versus halo mass relationships, and the galaxy stellar mass versus size relationship between mock observations and real galaxies. We also compare the luminosity function and the mass function of the mock galaxy sample with literature data and find a good agreement at all luminosity and mass scales. In particular, we find no significant tension at the bright end of the galaxy luminosity function, as reported in many analyses using simplified recipes to identify galaxy haloes, which in fact miscount the contribution of the extended galaxy haloes around large galaxies. Emission line galaxies provide a crucial tool for the study of galaxy formation and evolution, providing a means to trace a galaxy's star formation history or metal enrichment, and to identify galaxies at a range of stellar masses. In this paper, we present a study of emission line galaxies in the Survey for High- z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS) Frontier Fields (FF) medium-band survey. Through detailed flux calibrations we combine the first results of the SHARDS-FF survey with existing Hubble Frontier Field data to select 1098 candidate emission line galaxies from the Hubble Frontier Filed clusters Abell 370 and MACS J1149.5+2223. Furthermore, we implement this deep medium-band imaging to update photometric redshift estimates and stellar population parameters and discover 38 predominantly low-mass Hα emitters at redshifts 0.24 < z < 0.46. Overall, 27 of these sources have corresponding ultraviolet (UV) data from the Hubble Space Telescope that allow us to distinguish these sources and investigate the burstiness of their star formation histories. We find that more than 50 per cent of our sample shows an enhancement in Hα over UV, suggesting recent bursts in star formation on time-scales of a few to tens of Myr. We investigate these sources and find that they are typically low-mass discy galaxies with normal sizes. Their structures and star formation suggest that they are not undergoing mergers but are bursting due to alternative causes, such as gas accretion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first measurement of the metallicity gradient in extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs). With Subaru/Faint Object Camera And Spectrograph (FOCAS) Integral Field Unit (IFU), we have observed a nearby, low-mass EMPG, HSC J1631+4426, whose oxygen abundance and stellar mass are known to be 12 + log (O/H) = 6.9 and log10(M */ M ⊙) = 5.8, respectively. The measured metallicity gradient is −0.36 ± 0.04 dex kpc−1 corresponding to −0.049 ± 0.006 dex |$\:R_\mathrm{e}^{-1}$| for the continuum effective radius of R e = 0.14 kpc. Our observation has successfully demonstrated that three-dimensional spectroscopy with 8 m-class telescopes is powerful enough to reveal the metallicity distribution in local EMPGs, providing precious information on the baryon cycle in local analogs of primordial galaxies in the early Universe. We construct a new catalog of extragalactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) by matching the latest Chandra source catalog with local galaxy catalogs. Our XRB catalog contains 4430 XRBs hosted by 237 galaxies within ∼130 Mpc. As XRBs dominate the X-ray activity in galaxies, the catalog enables us to study the correlations between the total X-ray luminosity of a galaxy L X,tot, star formation rate |$\dot{\rho }_\star$|⁠ , and stellar mass M ⋆. As previously reported, L X,tot is correlated with |$\dot{\rho }_\star$| and M ⋆. In particular, we find that there is a fundamental plane in those three parameters; |$\log L_{\rm X,tot}={38.80^{+0.09}_{-0.12}}+\log (\dot{\rho }_\star + \alpha M_\star)$|⁠ , where α = (3.36 ± 1.40) × 10−11 yr−1. In order to investigate this relation, we construct a phenomenological binary population synthesis model. We find that the high-mass XRB and low-mass XRB fraction in formed compact object binary systems is |$\sim\! 9\%$| and |${0.04}\%$|⁠ , respectively. Utilizing the latest XMM-Newton and Swift X-ray source catalog data sets, additional XRB candidates are also found, resulting in a total of 5757 XRBs hosted by 311 galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to understand the variance of the far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) of the DustPedia galaxies, and its link with the stellar and dust properties. An interesting aspect of the dust emission is the inferred FIR colours which could inform us about the dust content of galaxies, and how it varies with the physical conditions within galaxies. However, the inherent complexity of dust grains as well as the variety of physical properties depending on dust, hinder our ability to utilize their maximum potential. We use principal component analysis (PCA) to explore new hidden correlations with many relevant physical properties such as the dust luminosity, dust temperature, dust mass, bolometric luminosity, star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, specific SFR, dust-to-stellar mass ratio, the fraction of absorbed stellar luminosity by dust (f abs), and metallicity. We find that 95 per cent of the variance in our sample can be described by two principal components (PCs). The first component controls the wavelength of the peak of the SED, while the second characterizes the width. The physical quantities that correlate better with the coefficients of the first two PCs, and thus control the shape of the FIR SED are the dust temperature, the dust luminosity, the SFR, and f abs. Finally, we find a weak tendency for low-metallicity galaxies to have warmer and broader SEDs, while on the other hand high-metallicity galaxies have FIR SEDs that are colder and narrower. Subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) is a popular technique for assigning galaxy mass or luminosity to haloes produced in N -body simulations. The method works by matching the cumulative number functions of the galaxy and halo properties, and is therefore sensitive both to the precise definitions of those properties and to the selection criteria used to define the samples. Further dependence follows when SHAM parameters are calibrated with galaxy clustering, which is known to depend strongly on the manner in which galaxies are selected. In this paper we introduce a new parametrization for SHAM and derive the best-fitting SHAM parameters as a function of various properties of the selection of the galaxy sample and of the photometric definition, including Sérsic versus Petrosian magnitudes, stellar masses versus r -band magnitudes, and optical (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) versus |$\mathrm{H}\, \small {\rm I}$| (ALFALFA) selection. In each case we calculate the models' goodness-of-fit to measurements of the projected two-point galaxy correlation function. In the optically selected samples we find strong evidence that the scatter in the galaxy–halo connection increases towards the faint end, and that AM performs better with luminosity than stellar mass. The SHAM parameters of optically and |$\mathrm{H}\, \small {\rm I}$| -selected galaxies are mutually exclusive, with the latter suggesting the importance of properties beyond halo mass. We provide best-fitting parameters for the SHAM galaxy–halo connection as a function of each of our input choices, extending the domain of validity of the model while reducing potential systematic error in its use. We present the KMOS Galaxy Evolution Survey (KGES), a K -band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) study of the H α and [N  ii ] emission from 288 K -band-selected galaxies at 1.2 ≲ z ≲ 1.8, with stellar masses in the range |$\log _{10}(M_{*}/\rm {M}_{\odot })\approx 9$|  – 11.5. In this paper, we describe the survey design, present the sample, and discuss the key properties of the KGES galaxies. We combine KGES with appropriately matched samples at lower redshifts from the KMOS Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS) and the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Accounting for the effects of sample selection, data quality, and analysis techniques between surveys, we examine the kinematic characteristics and angular momentum content of star-forming galaxies at z ≈ 1.5, ≈1, and ≈0. We find that stellar mass, rather than redshift, most strongly correlates with the disc fraction amongst star-forming galaxies at z ≲ 1.5, observing only a modest increase in the prevalence of discs between z ≈ 1.5 and z ≈ 0.04 at fixed stellar mass. Furthermore, typical star-forming galaxies follow the same median relation between specific angular momentum and stellar mass, regardless of their redshift, with the normalization of the relation depending more strongly on how disc-like a galaxy's kinematics are. This suggests that massive star-forming discs form in a very similar manner across the ≈10 Gyr encompassed by our study and that the inferred link between the angular momentum of galaxies and their haloes does not change significantly across the stellar mass and redshift ranges probed in this work. In this work, we combine size and stellar mass measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Server (SDSS) with the group finder algorithm of Rodriguez & Merchán in order to determine the stellar and halo mass–size relations of central and satellite galaxies separately. We show that, while central and satellite galaxies display similar stellar mass–size relations, their halo mass–size relations differ significantly. As expected, more massive haloes tend to host larger central galaxies. However, the size of satellite galaxies depends only slightly on halo virial mass. We show that these results are compatible with a remarkably simple model in which the size of central and satellite galaxies scales as the cubic root of their host halo mass, with the normalization for satellites being ∼30  per cent smaller than that for central galaxies, which can be attributed to tidal stripping. We further check that our measurements are in excellent agreement with predictions from the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulation. In the second part of this paper, we analyse how the clustering properties of central and satellite galaxies depend on their size. We demonstrate that, independently of the stellar mass threshold adopted, smaller galaxies are more tightly clustered than larger galaxies when either the entire sample or only satellites are considered. The opposite trend is observed on large scales when the size split is performed for the central galaxies alone. In this paper, we analyse the statistics of the 2D gas-phase oxygen abundance distributions of 100 nearby galaxies drawn from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field spectroscopy Area survey. After removing the large-scale radial metallicity gradient, we compute the two-point correlation functions of the resulting metallicity fluctuation maps. We detect correlations in the majority of our targets, which we show are significantly in excess of what is expected due to beam-smearing, and are robust against the choice of metallicity diagnostic. We show that the correlation functions are generally well-fit by the predictions of a simple model for stochastic metal injection coupled with diffusion, and from the model we show that, after accounting for the effects of both beam smearing and noise, the galaxies in our sample have characteristic correlation lengths of ∼1 kpc. Correlation lengths increase with both stellar mass and star formation rate, but show no significant variation with Hubble type, barredness, or merging state. We also find no evidence for a theoretically predicted relationship between gas velocity dispersion and correlation length, though this may be due to the small dynamic range in gas velocity dispersion across our sample. We present a new method for quantifying the abundance of satellites around field galaxies and in groups. The method is designed to work with samples such as photometric redshift catalogues, that do not have full spectroscopic coverage, but for which some redshift or distance information is available. It consists of identifying the galaxies most likely to be centrals, and using the clustering signal around them as a template to iteratively decompose the full population into satellite and central populations. Thus, it is similar to performing crowded-field photometry by using isolated stars to determine the point spread function of the image. The method does not identify individual satellites or centrals conclusively, but assigns a probability to each galaxy of being one or the other. Averaged over a large sample, it provides a statistical estimate of satellite abundance, even in crowded fields with large redshift uncertainties. We test the method using data from the COSMOS field, which includes a large set of local objects with accurate photometric redshifts. We measure satellite abundance as a function of central stellar or halo mass, as well as the satellite luminosity function, and find results consistent with previous studies, but extending over a broader range of central masses. We also consider a number of possible systematic uncertainties in the method, and show that they are generally smaller than our random errors. Cosmic rays (CRs) are a plausible mechanism for launching winds of cool material from the discs of star-forming galaxies. However, there is no consensus on what types of galaxies likely host CR-driven winds, or what role these winds might play in regulating galaxies' star formation rates. Using a detailed treatment of the transport and losses of hadronic CRs developed in the previous paper in this series, here we develop a semi-analytical model that allows us to assess the viability of using CRs to launch cool winds from galactic discs. In particular, we determine the critical CR fluxes – and corresponding star formation rate surface densities – above which hydrostatic equilibrium within a given galaxy is precluded because CRs drive the gas off in a wind or otherwise render it unstable. Our model demonstrates that catastrophic, CR-driven wind loss is a possibility at galactic mean surface densities below |${\lesssim}10^2 \ \mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$| pc−2. In this regime – encompassing the Galaxy and local dwarfs – the locus of the CR-stability curve patrols the high side of the observed distribution of galaxies in the Kennicutt–Schmidt parameter space of star formation rate versus gas surface density. However, hadronic losses render CRs unable to drive global winds in galaxies with surface densities above the ∼102−103 M⊙ pc−2 transition region. Our results show that quiescent, low surface density galaxies like the Milky Way are poised on the cusp of instability, such that small changes to interstellar mass (ISM) parameters can lead to the launching of CR-driven outflows, and we suggest that, as a result, CR feedback sets an ultimate limit to the star formation efficiency of most modern galaxies. This paper presents a survey of Mg  ii absorbing gas in the vicinity of 380 random galaxies, using 156 background quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) as absorption-line probes. The sample comprises 211 isolated (73 quiescent and 138 star-forming galaxies) and 43 non-isolated galaxies with sensitive constraints for both Mg  ii absorption and H α emission. The projected distances span a range from d  = 9 to 497 kpc, redshifts of the galaxies range from z  = 0.10 to 0.48, and rest-frame absolute B -band magnitudes range from M B = −16.7 to −22.8. Our analysis shows that the rest-frame equivalent width of Mg  ii , Wr (2796), depends on halo radius (R h), B -band luminosity(L B), and stellar mass (M star) of the host galaxies, and declines steeply with increasing d for isolated, star-forming galaxies. At the same time, Wr (2796) exhibits no clear trend for either isolated, quiescent galaxies or non-isolated galaxies. In addition, the covering fraction of Mg  ii absorbing gas 〈κ〉 is high with 〈κ〉 ≳ 60 per cent at <40 kpc for isolated galaxies and declines rapidly to 〈κ〉 ≈ 0 at d ≳ 100 kpc. Within the gaseous radius, the incidence of Mg  ii gas depends sensitively on both M star and the specific star formation rate inferred from H α. Different from what is known for massive quiescent haloes, the observed velocity dispersion of Mg  ii absorbing gas around star-forming galaxies is consistent with expectations from virial motion, which constrains individual clump mass to |$m_{\rm cl} \gtrsim 10^5 \, \rm M_\odot$| and cool gas accretion rate of |$\sim 0.7\!-\!2 \, \mathrm{ M}_\odot \, \rm yr^{-1}$|⁠. Finally, we find no strong azimuthal dependence of Mg  ii absorption for either star-forming or quiescent galaxies. Our results demonstrate that multiple parameters affect the properties of gaseous haloes around galaxies and highlight the need of a homogeneous, absorption-blind sample for establishing a holistic description of chemically enriched gas in the circumgalactic space. We present a new model for the evolution of gas phase metallicity gradients in galaxies from first principles. We show that metallicity gradients depend on four ratios that collectively describe the metal equilibration time-scale, production, transport, consumption, and loss. Our model finds that most galaxy metallicity gradients are in equilibrium at all redshifts. When normalized by metal diffusion, metallicity gradients are governed by the competition between radial advection, metal production, and accretion of metal-poor gas from the cosmic web. The model naturally explains the varying gradients measured in local spirals, local dwarfs, and high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We use the model to study the cosmic evolution of gradients across redshift, showing that the gradient in Milky Way-like galaxies has steepened over time, in good agreement with both observations and simulations. We also predict the evolution of metallicity gradients with redshift in galaxy samples constructed using both matched stellar masses and matched abundances. Our model shows that massive galaxies transition from the advection-dominated to the accretion-dominated regime from high to low redshifts, which mirrors the transition from gravity-driven to star formation feedback-driven turbulence. Lastly, we show that gradients in local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (major mergers) and inverted gradients seen both in the local and high-redshift galaxies may not be in equilibrium. In subsequent papers in this series, we show that the model also explains the observed relationship between galaxy mass and metallicity gradients, and between metallicity gradients and galaxy kinematics. There is a growing consensus that the vast majority of ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) are dwarf galaxies. However, there remain a few UDGs that seem to be special in terms of their globular cluster (GC) systems. In particular, according to some authors, certain UDGs exhibit large GC populations when compared to expectations from their stellar (or total) mass. Among these special UDGs, DF44 in the Coma cluster is one of the better-known examples. DF44 has been claimed to have a relatively high number of GCs, |$N_{\mathrm{ GC}}=74^{+18}_{-18}$|⁠ , for a stellar mass of only |$3\times 10^8\, \mathrm{ M}_{ \odot}$| which would indicate a much larger dark halo mass than dwarfs of similar stellar mass. In this paper, we revisit this number and, contrary to previous results, find |$N_{\mathrm{ GC}}=21^{+7}_{-9}$| assuming that the distribution of the GCs follows the same geometry as the galaxy. If we assume that the GCs around DF44 are distributed in a (projected) circularly symmetric way and, if we use a less strict criterion for the selection of the GCs, we find |$N_{\mathrm{ GC}}=18^{+23}_{-12}$|⁠. Making use of the M GC– M halo relation, this number of GCs suggests a dark matter halo mass of |$M_{\mathrm{ halo}}=1.1^{+0.4}_{-0.5} \times 10^{11} \mathrm{ M}_{\odot}$|⁠ , a value which is consistent with the expected total mass for DF44 based on its velocity dispersion, |$\sigma =33^{+3}_{-3}$| km s−1. We conclude that the number of GCs around DF44 is as expected for regular dwarf galaxies of similar stellar mass and DF44 is not extraordinary in this respect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although ZwCl0024+1652 galaxy cluster at z ∼ 0.4 has been thoroughly analysed, it lacks a comprehensive study of star formation and nuclear activity of its members. With GaLAxy Cluster Evolution (GLACE) survey, a total of 174 H α emission-line galaxies (ELGs) were detected, most of them having [N  ii ]. We reduced and analysed a set of [O  iii ] and H β tunable filter (TF) observations within GLACE survey. Using H α priors, we identified [O  iii ] and H β in 35 (∼20 per cent) and 59 (∼34 per cent) sources, respectively, with 21 of them having both emission lines, and 20 having in addition [N  ii ]. Applying BPT-NII diagnostic diagram, we classified these ELGs into 40 per cent star-forming (SF), 55 per cent composites, and 5 per cent LINERs. Star formation rate (SFR) measured through extinction corrected H α fluxes increases with stellar mass (M *), attaining its peak at |$\mathrm{\mathit{ M}}_{*}\sim 10^{9.8}\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠. We observed that the cluster centre to ∼ 1.3 Mpc is devoid of SF galaxies and AGN. Our results suggest that the star formation efficiency declines as the local density increases in the cluster medium. Moreover, the SF and AGN fractions drop sharply towards high-density environments. We observed a strong decline in SF fraction in high M *, confirming that star formation is highly suppressed in high-mass cluster galaxies. Finally, we determined that SFR correlates with M * while specific SFR (sSFR) anticorrelates with M *, both for cluster and field. This work shows the importance and strength of TF observations when studying ELGs in clusters at higher redshifts. The galaxy size–stellar mass and central surface density–stellar mass relationships are fundamental observational constraints on galaxy formation models. However, inferring the physical size of a galaxy from observed stellar emission is non-trivial due to various observational effects, such as the mass-to-light ratio variations that can be caused by non-uniform stellar ages, metallicities, and dust attenuation. Consequently, forward-modelling light-based sizes from simulations is desirable. In this work, we use the skirt   dust radiative transfer code to generate synthetic observations of massive galaxies (⁠|$M_{*}\sim 10^{11}\, \rm {M_{\odot }}$| at z  = 2, hosted by haloes of mass |$M_{\rm {halo}}\sim 10^{12.5}\, \rm {M_{\odot }}$|⁠) from high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations that form part of the Feedback In Realistic Environments project. The simulations used in this paper include explicit stellar feedback but no active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. From each mock observation, we infer the effective radius (R e), as well as the stellar mass surface density within this radius and within |$1\, \rm {kpc}$| (Σe and Σ1, respectively). We first investigate how well the intrinsic half-mass radius and stellar mass surface density can be inferred from observables. The majority of predicted sizes and surface densities are within a factor of 2 of the intrinsic values. We then compare our predictions to the observed size–mass relationship and the Σ1− M ⋆ and Σe− M ⋆ relationships. At z  ≳ 2, the simulated massive galaxies are in general agreement with observational scaling relations. At z  ≲ 2, they evolve to become too compact but still star forming, in the stellar mass and redshift regime where many of them should be quenched. Our results suggest that some additional source of feedback, such as AGN-driven outflows, is necessary in order to decrease the central densities of the simulated massive galaxies to bring them into agreement with observations at z  ≲ 2.
