We present the analysis of the stellar population and star formation history of 181 MIRI selected galaxies at z  = 0 − 3.5 in the massive galaxy cluster field SMACS J0723.3–7327, commonly referred to as SMACS0723, using the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). We combine the data with the JWST Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) catalogue, in conjunction with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR and ACS imaging. We find that the MIRI bands capture PAH features and dust emission, significantly enhancing the accuracy of photometric redshift and measurements of the physical properties of these galaxies. The median photo- z 's of galaxies with MIRI data are found to have a small 0.1 per cent difference from spectroscopic redshifts and reducing the error by 20 per cent. With MIRI data included in SED fits, we find that the measured stellar masses are unchanged, while the star formation rate is slightly lower by 0.1 dex. We also fit the median SED of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies (SFG) separately. MIRI data provides tighter constraints on the AGN contribution, reducing the typical AGN contributions by ∼15 per cent. In addition, we also compare the median SED obtained with and without MIRI, and we find that including MIRI data yields steeper optical and UV slopes, indicating bluer colours, lower dust attenuation, and younger stellar populations. In the future, MIRI/MRS will enhance our understanding by providing more detailed spectral information and allowing for the study of specific emission features and diagnostics associated with AGN. The properties of galaxies in low-density regions of the universe suggest an interplay between galaxy formation and environment. However, the specific reason why this particular large-scale environment influences the evolution of galaxies remains unclear. This paper examines the properties and evolutionary paths of galaxies within cosmic voids using the Illustris TNG300 simulation. The population of void galaxies at z = 0 has a higher star formation rate, a smaller stellar-to-halo-mass ratio, higher gas metallicity, and lower stellar metallicity in comparison with non-void galaxies at fixed stellar mass. Our analysis shows that these differences are mainly due to the characteristics of galaxies classified as satellites, for which the largest differences between void and non-void samples are found. Although the mean number of mergers is similar between void and non-void samples at a fixed stellar mass, void galaxies tend to experience mergers at later times, resulting in a more recent accumulation of accreted stellar mass. While the mean net accreted mass is comparable for high-mass galaxies, low-mass void galaxies tend to exhibit higher fractions of accreted stars than non-void galaxies. This finding challenges the common notion that void galaxies predominantly experience growth with infrequent mergers or interactions. It is crucial for a deeper understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies in the Universe to study stellar mass (M *) and star formation rate (SFR). Traditionally, astronomers infer the properties of galaxies from spectra, which are highly informative, but expensive and hard to be obtained. Fortunately, modern sky surveys obtained a vast amount of high-spatial-resolution photometric images. The photometric images are obtained relatively economically than spectra, and it is very helpful for related studies if M * and SFR can be estimated from photometric images. Therefore, this paper conducted some preliminary researches and explorations on this regard. We constructed a deep learning model named Galaxy Efficient Network (GalEffNet) for estimating integrated M * and specific star formation rate (sSFR) from Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument galaxy images. The GalEffNet primarily consists of a general feature extraction module and a parameter feature extractor. The research results indicate that the proposed GalEffNet exhibits good performance in estimating M * and sSFR, with σ reaching 0.218 and 0.410 dex. To further assess the robustness of the network, prediction uncertainty was performed. The results show that our model maintains good consistency within a reasonable bias range. We also compared the performance of various network architectures and further tested the proposed scheme using image sets with various resolutions and wavelength bands. Furthermore, we conducted applicability analysis on galaxies of various sizes, redshifts, and morphological types. Electron-capture-supernovae (EC-SNe) provide an alternative channel for producing neutron stars (NSs). They play an important role in the formation of double NS (DNS) systems and the chemical evolution of galaxies, and contribute to the NS mass distribution in observations. It is generally believed that EC-SNe originate from e -captures on |$\rm ^{24}Mg$| and |$\rm ^{20}Ne$| in the massive degenerate oxygen–neon (ONe) cores with masses close to the Chandrasekhar limit (M Ch). However, the origin of EC-SNe is still uncertain. In this paper, we systematically studied the EC-SNe in NS + He star systems by considering the explosive oxygen burning that may occur in the near- M Ch ONe core. We provided the initial parameter spaces for producing EC-SNe in the initial orbital period − initial He star mass (log |$P_{\rm orb}^{\rm i}-M_{\rm He}^{\rm i}$|⁠) diagram, and found that both |$M_{\rm He}^{\rm i}$| and minimum |$P_{\rm orb}^{\rm i}$| for EC-SNe increase with metallicity. Then, by considering NS kicks added to the newborn NS, we investigated the properties of the formed DNS systems after the He star companions collapse into NSs, such as the orbital periods, eccentricities, and spin periods of recycle pulsars (P spin), etc. The results show that most of the observed DNS systems can be produced by NS kicks of |$\lesssim$| 50 km s−1. In addition, we found that NSs could accrete more material if the residual H envelope on the He star companions is considered, which can form the mildly recycled pulsars (P spin ∼ 20 ms) in DNS systems. Accretion discs in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) foster black hole (BH) formation, growth, and mergers. Stellar mass BHs migrate inwards under the influence of hydrodynamical torques unless they encounter a region where the torque flips sign. At these migration traps, BHs accumulate and merge via dynamical or gas-assisted interactions, producing high-frequency LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK) gravitational wave (GW) sources and potentially cutting off the supply of extreme mass ratio inspirals that would otherwise make low-frequency, LISA -band GWs. In this paper, we study the interplay between different types of migration torques, focusing especially on the 'thermal torques' generated by the thermal response of the AGN to embedded stellar-mass BHs that accrete through their own mini-discs. In contrast to previous work, we find that Type I torques cannot produce migration traps on their own, but thermal torques often do, particularly in low-mass AGN. The migration traps produced by thermal torques exist at much larger distances (∼103−5 gravitational radii) than do previously identified Type I traps, carrying implications for GW populations at multiple frequencies. Finally, we identify a bifurcation of AGN discs into two regimes: migration traps exist below a critical AGN luminosity, and do not at higher luminosities. This critical luminosity is fit as |$\log _{10} L_{\rm AGN}^c = 45 {\!-\!} 0.32 \log _{10}{(\alpha /0.01)}$| where α is the Shakura–Sunyaev viscosity parameter, a range compatible with recent claims that LVK GWs are not preferentially associated with high-luminosity AGN. Tidal streams and stellar shells are naturally formed in galaxy interactions and mergers. The Giant Stellar Stream (GSS), the North-East (NE), and Western (W) stellar shelves observed in Andromeda Galaxy (M31) are examples of these structures and were formed through the merger of M31 and a satellite galaxy. Recent observational papers have provided strong evidence that the shells and GSS originate from a single progenitor. In this paper, we investigate the formation of these two stellar shelves and the detailed nature of their relationship to the GSS. We present numerical simulations of tidal disruption of a satellite galaxy assuming that it is a progenitor of the GSS and the shell system. We represent the progenitor as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy with the stellar mass of 109 M⊙ and evolve its merger with M31 for 3 Gyr to reproduce the chemodynamical properties of the NE and W shelves. We find that an initial metallicity of the progenitor with a negative radial gradient of ΔFeH  = −0.3 ± 0.2 successfully reproduces observed metallicities of the NE, W shelves, and the GSS, showing that all these structures can originate from the same merger event. We study the distribution and evolution of the stellar mass and the star formation rate (SFR) of the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) over 0.04 < z < 1.3 using a large sample of 407 X-ray galaxy groups selected from the COSMOS, AEGIS, and XMM-LSS fields. We compare our results with predictions from the semi-analytic models based on the Millennium simulation. In contrast to model predictions, we find that, as the Universe evolves, the stellar mass distribution evolves towards a normal distribution. This distribution tends to skew to low-mass BGGs at all redshifts implying the presence of a star-forming population of the BGGs with MS ∼ 1010.5 M⊙ which results in the shape of the stellar mass distribution deviating from a normal distribution. In agreement with the models and previous studies, we find that the mean stellar mass of BGGs grows with time by a factor of ∼2 between z = 1.3 and z = 0.1, however, the significant growth occurs above z = 0.4. The BGGs are not entirely a dormant population of galaxies, as low-mass BGGs in low-mass haloes are more active in forming stars than the BGGs in more massive haloes, over the same redshift range. We find that the average SFR of the BGGs evolves steeply with redshift and fraction of the passive BGGs increases as a function of increasing stellar mass and halo mass. Finally, we show that the specific SFR of the BGGs within haloes with M200 ≤ 1013.4 M⊙ decreases with increasing halo mass at z < 0.4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the Universe and its role in the properties of the galaxies is one of the open questions in astrophysics and cosmology. Though, traditionally, electromagnetic waves have been instrumental in direct measurements of SMBHs, significantly influencing our comprehension of galaxy formation, gravitational waves (GW) bring an independent avenue to detect numerous binary SMBHs in the observable Universe in the nano-Hertz range using the pulsar timing array observation. This brings a new way to understand the connection between the formation of binary SMBHs and galaxy formation if we can connect theoretical models with multimessenger observations namely GW data and galaxy surveys. Along these lines, we present here the first paper on this series based on romulus25 cosmological simulation on the properties of the host galaxies of SMBHs and propose on how this can be used to connect with observations of nano-Hertz GW signal and galaxy surveys. We show that the most dominant contribution to the background will arise from sources with high chirp masses which are likely to reside in low-redshift early-type galaxies with high stellar mass, largely old stellar population, and low star formation rate, and that reside at centres of galaxy groups and manifest evidence of recent mergers. The masses of the sources show a correlation with the halo mass and stellar mass of the host galaxies. Modern cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy simulations provide tens of thousands of reasonably realistic synthetic galaxies across cosmic time. However, quantitatively assessing the level of realism of simulated universes in comparison to the real one is difficult. In this paper of the Extracting Reality from Galaxy Observables with Machine Learning series, we utilize contrastive learning to directly compare a large sample of simulated and observed galaxies based on their stellar-light images. This eliminates the need to specify summary statistics and allows to exploit the whole information content of the observations. We produce survey-realistic galaxy mock data sets resembling real Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) observations using the cosmological simulations TNG50 and TNG100. Our focus is on galaxies with stellar masses between 109 and 1012 M⊙ at z  = 0.1–0.4. This allows us to evaluate the realism of the simulated TNG galaxies in comparison to actual HSC observations. We apply the self-supervised contrastive learning method Nearest Neighbour Contrastive Learning to the images from both simulated and observed data sets (g -, r -, i -bands). This results in a 256-dimensional representation space, encoding all relevant observable galaxy properties. First, this allows us to identify simulated galaxies that closely resemble real ones by seeking similar images in this multidimensional space. Even more powerful, we quantify the alignment between the representations of these two image sets, finding that the majority (≳ 70 per cent) of the TNG galaxies align well with observed HSC images. However, a subset of simulated galaxies with larger sizes, steeper Sérsic profiles, smaller Sérsic ellipticities, and larger asymmetries appears unrealistic. We also demonstrate the utility of our derived image representations by inferring properties of real HSC galaxies using simulated TNG galaxies as the ground truth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young stellar clusters are predominantly the hub of star formation and hence, ideal to perform comprehensive studies over the least explored substellar regime. Various unanswered questions like the mass distribution in brown dwarf regime and the effect of diverse cluster environment on brown dwarf formation efficiency still plague the scientific community. The nearby young cluster, IC 1396 with its feedback-driven environment, is ideal to conduct such study. In this paper, we adopt a multiwavelength approach, using deep Subaru HSC along with other data sets and machine learning techniques to identify the cluster members complete down to ∼ 0.03 M⊙ in the central 22 arcmin area of IC 1396. We identify 458 cluster members including 62 brown dwarfs which are used to determine mass distribution in the region. We obtain a star-to-brown dwarf ratio of ∼ 6 for a stellar mass range 0.03–1 M⊙ in the studied cluster. The brown dwarf fraction is observed to increase across the cluster as radial distance from the central OB-stars increases. This study also compiles 15 young stellar clusters to check the variation of star-to-brown dwarf ratio relative to stellar density and ultraviolet (UV) flux ranging within 4–2500 stars pc−2 and 0.7–7.3  G 0, respectively. The brown dwarf fraction is observed to increase with stellar density but the results about the influence of incident UV flux are inconclusive within this range. In this paper, we use photometric data from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey Data Release 4 survey to identify isolated galaxy pairs and analyse their characteristics and properties. Our results align with previous spectroscopic studies, particularly in luminosity function parameters, suggesting a consistent trait among galaxy systems. Our findings reveal a high fraction of red galaxies across all samples, irrespective of projected distance, velocity difference, or luminosity ratio. We found that the proximity of a neighbour to its central galaxy influences its colour due to environmental effects. We also found that central and neighbour have different behaviours: central galaxies maintain a stable red colour regardless of luminosity, while neighbour colours vary based on luminosity ratios. When the central is significantly brighter, the neighbour tends to be less red. According to our division in red, blue, and mixed pairs, we found evidence of galactic conformity. The red pair fractions increase in closer pairs and in pairs of similar luminosity, indicating shared environments promoting red galaxy formation. Analysing local density, the expected colour–density relation is of course recovered, but it is strongly determined by the stellar mass of the pair. In denser environments, the red pair fractions increase, blue pairs decrease, and for the mixed pairs it depends on their stellar mass: more massive mixed pairs decrease their fraction, whereas the less massive ones increase it. These results shed light on the intricate relationship between galaxy pairs, their characteristics, and environmental influences on colour, providing insights into their evolutionary histories. The total luminosity and spectral shape of the non-thermal emission produced by cosmic rays depends on their interstellar environment, a dependence that gives rise to correlations between galaxies' bulk properties – star-formation rate, stellar mass, and others – and their non-thermal spectra. Understanding the physical mechanisms of cosmic ray transport, loss, and emission is key to understanding these correlations. Here, in the first paper of the series, we present a new method to compute the non-thermal spectra of star-forming galaxies, and describe an open-source software package – congruents (COsmic ray, Neutrino, Gamma-ray, and Radio Non-Thermal Spectra) – that implements it. As a crucial innovation, our method requires as input only a galaxy's effective radius, star-formation rate, stellar mass, and redshift, all quantities that are readily available for large samples of galaxies and do not require expensive, spatially resolved gas measurements. From these inputs we derive individual, galaxy-by-galaxy models for the background gas and radiation field through which cosmic rays propagate, from which we compute steady-state cosmic ray spectra for hadronic and leptonic particles in both the galactic disc and halo by solving the full kinetic equation. We invoke modern models for cosmic ray transport and include all significant emission and loss mechanisms. In this paper, we describe the model and validate it against non-thermal emission measured in nearby star-forming galaxies that span four orders of magnitude in star-formation rate. The fraction of ionizing photons that escape their host galaxies to ionize hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is a critical parameter in analyses of the reionization era. In this paper, we use the meraxes semi-analytic galaxy formation model to infer the mean ionizing photon escape fraction and its dependence on galaxy properties through joint modelling of the observed high redshift galaxy population and existing constraints on the reionization history. Using a Bayesian framework, and under the assumption that escape fraction is primarily related to halo mass, we find that the joint constraints of the ultraviolet luminosity function, cosmic microwave background optical depth, and the Ly α forest require an escape fraction of |$(18\pm 5)$| per cent for galaxies within haloes of M ≲ 109 M⊙ and |$(5\pm 2)$| per cent for more massive haloes. In terms of galaxy properties, this transition in escape fraction occurs at stellar masses of M ⋆ ∼ 107 M⊙, nearly independent of redshift. As a function of redshift, reionization is dominated by the smaller M ⋆ ≲ 107 M⊙ galaxies with high escape fractions at z ≳ 6 and by the larger M ⋆ ≳ 107 M⊙ galaxies with lower escape fractions at z ≲ 6. Galaxies with star formation rates of 10−2.5 M⊙yr−1 to 10−1.5 M⊙yr−1 provide the dominant source of ionizing photons throughout reionization. Our results are consistent with recent direct measurements of a |$\sim 5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| escape fraction from massive galaxies at the end of reionization and support the picture of low mass galaxies being the dominant sources of ionizing photons during reionization. We present the 'Cosmological Jellyfish' project – a citizen-science classification program to identify jellyfish (JF) galaxies within the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations. JF are satellite galaxies that exhibit long trailing gas features – 'tails' – extending from their stellar body. Their distinctive morphology arises due to ram-pressure stripping (RPS) as they move through the background gaseous medium. Using the TNG50 and TNG100 simulations, we construct a sample of |$\sim 80\, 000$| satellite galaxies spanning an unprecedented range of stellar masses, |$10^{8.3}{-}10^{12.3}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , and host masses, |$M_\mathrm{200,c}=10^{10.4}{-}10^{14.6}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$| back to z  = 2. Based on this sample, |$\sim 90\, 000$| galaxy images were presented to volunteers in the citizen-science Zooniverse platform, who were asked to determine whether the galaxy image resembles a JF. Based on volunteer votes, each galaxy received a score determining if it is a JF or not. This paper describes the project, the inspected satellite sample, the methodology, and the classification process that resulted in a data set of 5307 visually identified JF galaxies. We find that JF is common in nearly all group- and cluster-sized systems, with the JF fraction increasing with host mass and decreasing with satellite stellar mass. We highlight JF galaxies in three relatively unexplored regimes: low-mass hosts of |$M_\mathrm{200,c}\sim 10^{11.5}{-}10^{13}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , radial positions within hosts exceeding the virial radius R 200, c, and at high redshift up to z  = 2. This paper presents the third data release of the INvestigating Stellar Population In RElics (INSPIRE) project, comprising 52 ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs) observed with the X-Shooter spectrograph. We measure integrated stellar velocity dispersion, [Mg/Fe] abundances, ages, and metallicities for all the INSPIRE objects. We thus infer star formation histories and confirm the existence of a degree of relicness (DoR), defined in terms of the fraction of stellar mass formed by z  = 2, the time at which a galaxy has assembled 75 per cent of its mass, and the final assembly time. Objects with a high DoR assembled their stellar mass at early epochs, while low-DoR objects show a non-negligible fraction of later formed populations and hence a spread in ages and metallicities. A higher DoR correlates with larger [Mg/Fe], supersolar metallicity, and larger velocity dispersion values. The 52 UMCGs span a large range of DoR from 0.83 to 0.06, with 38 of them having formed more than 75  per cent of their mass by z  = 2. Of these, nine are extreme relics (DoR>0.7), since they formed the totality (⁠|$\gt 99~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of their stellar mass by redshift z  = 2. The remaining 14 UCMGs cannot be considered relics, as they are characterized by more extended star formation histories. With INSPIRE  we built the first sizeable sample of relics outside the local Universe, up to z ∼ 0.4, increasing the number of confirmed relics by a factor of >10, and opening up an important window to explain the mass assembly of massive galaxies in the high- z Universe. The current properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) in the nearby Universe are a consequence of an evolutionary history ruled by accretion and disruption processes. The analysis of scaling relations for GCSs is crucial for understanding the relevance of different physical processes involved in their origin and subsequent survival. In this work, radial profiles are calculated for a sample of GCSs associated with nearby massive galaxies. This is supplemented with results from our previous papers, achieving a total sample of 53 GCSs with radial profiles homogeneously calculated, and spanning more than two orders of magnitude in stellar mass of the host galaxy. Scaling relations involving different parameters of the GCSs are obtained for the entire sample, and their significance in terms of different scenarios is considered. When a galaxy falls into a cluster, its outermost parts are the most affected by the environment. In this paper, we are interested in studying the influence of a dense environment on different galaxy's components to better understand how this affects the evolution of galaxies. We use, as laboratory for this study, the Hydra cluster which is close to virialization; yet it still shows evidence of substructures. We present a multiwavelength bulge–disc decomposition performed simultaneously in 12 bands from S-PLUS (Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey) data for 52 galaxies brighter than mr  = 16. We model the galaxies with a Sérsic profile for the bulge and an exponential profile for the disc. We find that the smaller, more compact, and bulge-dominated galaxies tend to exhibit a redder colour at a fixed stellar mass. This suggests that the same mechanisms (ram-pressure and tidal stripping) that are causing the compaction in these galaxies are also causing them to stop forming stars. The bulge size is unrelated to the galaxy's stellar mass, while the disc size increases with greater stellar mass, indicating the dominant role of the disc in the overall galaxy mass–size relation found. Furthermore, our analysis of the environment unveils that quenched galaxies are prevalent in regions likely associated with substructures. However, these areas also harbour a minority of star-forming galaxies, primarily resulting from galaxy interactions. Lastly, we find that ∼37 per cent of the galaxies exhibit bulges that are bluer than their discs, indicative of an outside-in quenching process in this type of dense environments. With the launch of JWST and other scheduled missions aimed at probing the distant universe, we are entering a new promising era for high- z astronomy. One of our main goals is the detection of the first population of stars (Population III or Pop III stars), and models suggest that Pop III star formation is allowed well into the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), rendering this an attainable achievement. In this paper, we focus on our chance of detecting massive Pop IIIs at the moment of their death as Pair-Instability Supernovae (PISNe). We estimate the probability of discovering PISNe during the EoR in galaxies with different stellar masses (7.5 ≤ Log(M ⋆/M⊙) ≤ 10.5) from six dustyGadget simulations of 50  h −1 cMpc per side. We further assess the expected number of PISNe in surveys with JWST/NIRCam and Roman/WFI. On average, less than one PISN is expected in all examined JWST fields at z ≃ 8 with Δ z  = 1, and O(1) PISN may be found in a ∼1 deg2 Roman field in the best-case scenario, although different assumptions on the Pop III IMF and/or Pop III star formation efficiency can decrease this number substantially. Including the contribution from unresolved low-mass haloes holds the potential for increased discoveries. JWST/NIRCam and Roman/WFI allow the detection of massive-progenitor (∼250 M⊙) PISNe throughout all the optimal F200W-F356W, F277W-F444W, and F158-F213 colours. PISNe are also pre-dominantly located at the outskirts of their hosting haloes, facilitating the disentangling of underlying stellar emission thanks to the spatial-resolution capabilities of the instruments. Low-metallicity very massive stars with an initial mass of ∼140– |$260\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| are expected to end their lives as pair-instability supernovae (PISNe). The abundance pattern resulting from a PISN differs drastically from regular core-collapse supernova (CCSN) models and is expected to be seen in very metal-poor (VMP) stars of [Fe/H] ≲ −2. Despite the routine discovery of many VMP stars, the unique abundance pattern expected from PISNe has not been unambiguously detected. The recently discovered VMP star LAMOST J1010 + 2358, however, shows a peculiar abundance pattern that is remarkably well fit by a PISN, indicating the potential first discovery of a bonafide star born from gas polluted by a PISN. In this paper, we study the detailed nucleosynthesis in a large set of models of CCSN of Pop III and Pop II star of metallicity [Fe/H] = −3 with masses ranging from 12 to |$30\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠. We find that the observed abundance pattern in LAMOST J1010 + 2358 can be fit at least equally well by CCSN models of ∼12– |$14\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| that undergo negligible fallback following the explosion. The best-fitting CCSN models provide a fit that is even marginally better than the best-fitting PISN model. We conclude the measured abundance pattern in LAMOST J1010 + 2358 could have originated from a CCSN and therefore cannot be unambiguously identified with a PISN given the set of elements measured in it to date. We identify key elements that need to be measured in future detections in stars like LAMOST J1010 + 2358 that can differentiate between CCSN and PISN origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates a hypothesis proposed in previous research relating neutron star (NS) mass and its dark matter (DM) accumulation. As DM accumulates, NS mass decreases, predicting lower NS masses toward the Galactic centre. Due to limited NSs data near the Galactic centre, we examine NSs located within DM clumps. Using the CLUMPY code simulations, we determine the DM clumps distribution, with masses from 10 to 108 M⊙ and scales from 10−3 to 10 kpc. These clumps' DM exhibit a peak at the centre, tapering toward the outskirts, resembling our Galaxy's DM distribution. We analyse these DM clumps' NS mass variations, considering diverse DM particle masses and galaxy types. We find relatively stable NS mass within 0.01 – 5 kpc from the clump centre. This stability supports the initial hypothesis, particularly for NSs located beyond 0.01 kpc from the clump centre, where NS mass reaches a plateau around 0.1 kpc. Nevertheless, NS mass near the clump's periphery reveals spatial dependence: NS position within DM clumps influences its mass in Milky Way-type galaxies. Moreover, this dependence varies with the DM model considered. In summary, our study investigates the proposed link between NS mass and DM accumulation by examining NSs within DM clumps. Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are commonly found in close proximity to the Milky Way and other massive spiral galaxies. As such, their projected stellar ellipticity and extended light distributions are often thought to owe to tidal forces. In this paper, we study the projected stellar ellipticities and faint stellar outskirts of tidally isolated ultra-faints drawn from the 'Engineering Dwarfs at Galaxy Formation's Edge' (EDGE) cosmological simulation suite. Despite their tidal isolation, our simulated dwarfs exhibit a wide range of projected ellipticities (0.03 < ε < 0.85), with many possessing anisotropic extended stellar haloes that mimic tidal tails, but owe instead to late-time accretion of lower mass companions. Furthermore, we find a strong causal relationship between ellipticity and formation time of a UFD, which is robust to a wide variation in the feedback model. We show that the distribution of projected ellipticities in our suite of simulated EDGE dwarfs matches well with a sample of 19 Local Group dwarf galaxies and a sample of 11 isolated dwarf galaxies. Given ellipticity in EDGE arises from an ex-situ accretion origin, the agreement in shape indicates the ellipticities of some observed dwarfs may also originate from a non-tidal scenario. The orbital parameters of these observed dwarfs further support that they are not currently tidally disrupting. If the baryonic content in these galaxies is still tidally intact, then the same may be true for their dark matter content, making these galaxies in our Local Group pristine laboratories for testing dark matter and galaxy formation models. The estimation of galaxy stellar masses depends on the assumed prior of the star-formation history (SFH) and spatial scale of the analysis (spatially resolved versus integrated scales). In this paper, we connect the prescription of the SFH in the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to spatially resolved scales (∼kpc) to shed light on the systematics involved when estimating stellar masses. Specifically, we fit the integrated photometry of ∼970 massive (log (M⋆/M⊙) = 9.8–11.5), intermediate redshift (z  = 0.5–2.0) galaxies with PROSPECTOR , assuming both exponentially declining tau model and flexible SFHs. We complement these fits with the results of spatially resolved SFH estimates obtained by pixel-by-pixel SED fitting, which assume tau models for individual pixels. These spatially resolved SFHs show a large diversity in shapes, which can largely be accounted for by the flexible SFHs with PROSPECTOR. The differences in the stellar masses from those two approaches are overall in good agreement (average difference of ∼0.07 dex). Contrarily, the simpler tau model SFHs typically miss the oldest episode of star formation, leading to an underestimation of the stellar mass by ∼0.3 dex. We further compare the derived global specific star-formation rate (sSFR), the mass-weighted stellar age (t50), and the star-formation time-scale (τSF) obtained from the different SFH approaches. We conclude that the spatially resolved scales within galaxies motivate a flexible SFH on global scales to account for the diversity of SFHs and counteract the effects of outshining of older stellar populations by younger ones. We present the measurement of total and stellar/dark matter decomposed mass density profile around a sample of galaxy groups and clusters with dynamical masses derived from integral-field stellar kinematics from the MaNGA survey in Paper I and weak lensing derived from the DECaLS imaging survey. Combining the two data sets enables accurate measurement of the radial density distribution from several kpc to Mpc scales. Intriguingly, we find that the excess surface density derived from stellar kinematics in the inner region cannot be explained by simply adding an NFW dark matter halo extrapolated from lensing measurement at a larger scale to a stellar mass component derived from the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalogue. We find that a good fit to both data sets requires a stellar mass normalization about three times higher than that derived from the NSA catalogue, which would require an unrealistically too-heavy initial mass function for stellar mass estimation. If we keep the stellar mass normalization to that of the NSA catalogue but allow a varying inner dark matter density profile, we obtain an asymptotic slope of γgnfw =  |$1.82_{-0.25}^{+0.15}$| and γgnfw =  |$1.48_{-0.41}^{+0.20}$| for the group bin and the cluster bin, respectively, significantly steeper than the NFW case. We also compare the total mass inner density slopes with those from TNG300 and find that the values from the simulation are lower than the observation by about 2σ level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, astrometric microlensing is the only tool that can directly measure the mass of a single star; it can also help us to detect compact objects such as isolated neutron stars and black holes. The number of microlensing events that are being predicted and reported is increasing. In this paper, potential lens stars are selected from three types of stars: high-proper-motion stars, nearby stars, and high-mass stars. For each potential lens star, we select a larger search scope to find possible matching sources and to avoid missing events as much as possible. Using data from Gaia Data Release 3, we predict 4500 astrometric microlensing events with δθ+ > 0.1 mas, which occur between J2010.0 and J2070.0, where 1664 events are different from those found previously. There are 293 lens stars that can cause two or more events, where five lens stars can cause more than 50 events. We find that 116 events have the distance of background stars from the proper motion path of lens stars more than 8 arcsec in the reference epoch, where the maximum distance is 16 |${_{.}^{\prime\prime}}$| 6. This paper describes the extended data release (eDR) of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. It comprises science-grade quality data for 895 galaxies obtained with the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectograph/PPak instrument at the 3.5-m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory along the last 12 yr, using the V500 setup [3700–7500 Å, 6 Å/full-width at half-maximum (FWHM)] and the CALIFA observing strategy. It includes galaxies of any morphological type, star formation stage, a wide range of stellar masses (∼107–1012 M⊙), at an average redshift of ∼0.015 (90 per cent within 0.005 < z < 0.05). Primarily selected based on the projected size and apparent magnitude, we demonstrate that it can be volume corrected resulting in a statistically limited but representative sample of the population of galaxies in the nearby Universe. All the data were homogeneous re-reduced, introducing a set of modifications to the previous reduction. The most relevant is the development and implementation of a new cube-reconstruction algorithm that provides with an (almost) seeing-limited spatial resolution (FWHMPSF ∼ 1.0 arcsec). To illustrate the usability and quality of the data, we extracted two aperture spectra for each galaxy (central 1.5 arcsec and fully integrated), and analyse them using pyFIT3D. We obtain a set of observational and physical properties of both the stellar populations and the ionized gas, that have been compared for the two apertures, exploring their distributions as a function of the stellar masses and morphologies of the galaxies, comparing with recent results in the literature. All modern galaxy formation models employ stochastic elements in their sub-grid prescriptions to discretize continuous equations across the time domain. In this paper, we investigate how the stochastic nature of these models, notably star formation, black hole accretion, and their associated feedback, that act on small (< kpc) scales, can back-react on macroscopic galaxy properties (e.g. stellar mass and size) across long (> Gyr) time-scales. We find that the scatter in scaling relations predicted by the EAGLE model implemented in the swift code can be significantly impacted by random variability between re-simulations of the same object, even when galaxies are resolved by tens of thousands of particles. We then illustrate how re-simulations of the same object can be used to better understand the underlying model, by showing how correlations between galaxy stellar mass and black hole mass disappear at the highest black hole masses (M BH > 108 M⊙), indicating that the feedback cycle may be interrupted by external processes. We find that although properties that are collected cumulatively over many objects are relatively robust against random variability (e.g. the median of a scaling relation), the properties of individual galaxies (such as galaxy stellar mass) can vary by up to 25 per cent, even far into the well-resolved regime, driven by bursty physics (black hole feedback), and mergers between galaxies. We suggest that studies of individual objects within cosmological simulations be treated with caution, and that any studies aiming to closely investigate such objects must account for random variability within their results. We present a pilot study of the atomic neutral hydrogen gas (H  i) content of ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates. In this paper, we use the pre-pilot Eridanus field data from the Widefield ASKAP L -band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey to search for H  i in UDG candidates found in the Systematically Measuring Ultra-diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We narrow down to 78 SMUDGes UDG candidates within the maximum radial extents of the Eridanus subgroups for this study. Most SMUDGes UDGs candidates in this study have effective radii smaller than 1.5 kpc and thus fail to meet the defining size threshold. We only find one H  i detection, which we classify as a low-surface-brightness dwarf. Six putative UDGs are H  i -free. We show the overall distribution of SMUDGes UDG candidates on the size–luminosity relation and compare them with low-mass dwarfs on the atomic gas fraction versus stellar mass scaling relation. There is no correlation between gas-richness and colour indicating that colour is not the sole parameter determining their H  i content. The evolutionary paths that drive galaxy morphological changes and UDG formation channels are likely the additional factors to affect the H  i content of putative UDGs. The actual numbers of UDGs for the Eridanus and NGC 1332 subgroups are consistent with the predicted abundance of UDGs and the halo virial mass relation, except for the NGC 1407 subgroup, which has a smaller number of UDGs than the predicted number. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of four triply eclipsing triple star systems, namely TIC 88206187, TIC 14839347, TIC 298714297, and TIC 66893949. The four systems with third-body eclipses were found in the TESS light curves from among a sample of ∼400 matches between known eclipsing binaries and the Gaia DR3 Non-Single Star solution data base. We combined photometric light curves, eclipse timing variations, archival spectral energy distributions, and theoretical evolution tracks in a robust photodynamical analysis to determine the orbital and system parameters. The triples have outer periods of 52.9 d, 85.5 d, 117 d, and 471 d, respectively. All dozen stars have masses ≲ 2.6 M⊙. The systems are quite flat with mutual inclination angles between the inner and outer orbital planes that are all ≲ 4°. The outer mass ratios (q ≡ M 3/ M bin) range from 0.39 to 0.76, consistent with our earlier collection of compact triply eclipsing triples. TIC 88206187 exhibits a fractional radius of the outer tertiary component (r B ≡ R B / a out) exceeding 0.1 (only the third such system known), and we consider its future evolution. Finally, we compare our photodynamical analysis results and the orbital parameters given in the Gaia DR3 NSS solutions, indicating decent agreement, but with the photodynamical results being more accurate. The history of reionization is highly dependent on the ionizing properties of high-redshift galaxies. It is therefore important to have a solid understanding of how the ionizing properties of galaxies are linked to physical and observable quantities. In this paper, we use the First Light and Reionization Epoch Simulations (Flares) to study the Lyman-continuum (LyC, i.e. hydrogen-ionizing) emission of massive (⁠|$M_*\gt 10^8\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠) galaxies at redshifts z  = 5 − 10. We find that the specific ionizing emissivity (i.e. intrinsic ionizing emissivity per unit stellar mass) decreases as stellar mass increases, due to the combined effects of increasing age and metallicity. Flares predicts a median ionizing photon production efficiency (i.e. intrinsic ionizing emissivity per unit intrinsic far-UV luminosity) of |$\log _{10}(\xi _{\rm ion}\rm {/erg^{-1}Hz})=25.40^{+0.16}_{-0.17}$|⁠ , with values spanning the range |$\log _{10}(\xi _{\rm ion}\rm {/erg^{-1}Hz})=25-25.75$|⁠. This is within the range of many observational estimates, but below some of the extremes observed. We compare the production efficiency with observable properties, and find a weak negative correlation with the UV-continuum slope, and a positive correlation with the [O  iii ] equivalent width. We also consider the dust-attenuated production efficiency (i.e. intrinsic ionizing emissivity per unit dust-attenuated far-UV luminosity), and find a median of |$\log _{10}(\xi _{\rm ion}\rm {/erg^{-1}Hz})\sim 25.5$|⁠. Within our sample of |$M_*\gt 10^8\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$| galaxies, it is the stellar populations in low mass galaxies that contribute the most to the total ionizing emissivity. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) emission accounts for 10 − 20 per cent of the total emissivity at a given redshift, and extends the LyC luminosity function by ∼0.5 dex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early observations of transient explosions can provide vital clues to their progenitor origins. In this paper, we present the nearby Type Iax (02cx-like) supernova (SN), SN 2020udy, that was discovered within hours (∼7 h) of estimated first light. An extensive data set of ultra-violet, optical, and near-infrared observations was obtained, covering out to ∼150 d after explosion. SN 2020udy peaked at −17.86 ± 0.43 mag in the r band and evolved similarly to other 'luminous' SNe Iax, such as SNe 2005hk and 2012Z. Its well-sampled early light curve allows strict limits on companion interaction to be placed. Main-sequence companion stars with masses of 2 and 6 M⊙ are ruled out at all viewing angles, while a helium-star companion is allowed from a narrow range of angles (140–180° away from the companion). The spectra and light curves of SN 2020udy are in good agreement with those of the 'N5def' deflagration model of a near Chandrasekhar-mass carbon–oxygen white dwarf. However, as has been seen in previous studies of similar luminosity events, SN 2020udy evolves slower than the model. Broad-band linear polarization measurements taken at and after peak are consistent with no polarization, in agreement with the predictions of the companion-star configuration from the early light-curve measurements. The host galaxy environment is low metallicity and is consistent with a young stellar population. Overall, we find the most plausible explosion scenario to be the incomplete disruption of a CO white dwarf near the Chandrasekhar-mass limit, with a helium-star companion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the greater power to infer the state of stellar interiors provided by asteroseismology, it has become possible to study the survival of initially convective cores within stars during their main-sequence evolution. Standard theories of stellar evolution predict that convective cores in subsolar mass stars have lifetimes below |$1\, {\rm Gyr}$|⁠. However, a recent asteroseismic study of the star Kepler-444 concluded that the initial convective core had survived for nearly |$8\, {\rm Gyr}$|⁠. The goal of this paper is to study the convective-core evolution of Kepler-444 and to investigate its proposed longevity. We modify the input physics of stellar models to induce longer convective-core lifetimes and vary the associated parameter across a dense grid of evolutionary tracks. The observations of metallicity, effective temperature, mean density, and asteroseismic frequency ratios are fitted to the models using the basta pipeline. We explore different choices of constraints, from which a long convective-core lifetime is only recovered for a few specific combinations: mainly from the inclusion of potentially unreliable frequencies and/or excluding the covariances between the frequency ratios, whereas for the classical parameters, the derived luminosity has the largest influence. For all choices of observables, our analysis reliably constrains the convective-core lifetime of Kepler-444 to be short, with a median around |$0.6\, {\rm Gyr}$| and a 1 σ upper bound around |$3.5\, {\rm Gyr}$|⁠. The gravitational interactions between the Milky Way and in-falling satellites offer a wealth of information about the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. In this paper, we explore the high-dimensionality of the GALAH DR3 plus Gaia eDR3 data set to identify new tidally stripped candidate stars of the nearby star cluster Omega Centauri (⁠|$\omega \, \mathrm{Cen}$|⁠). We investigate both the chemical and dynamical parameter space simultaneously, and identify cluster candidates that are spatially separated from the main cluster body, in regions where contamination by halo field stars is high. Most notably, we find candidates for |$\omega \, \mathrm{Cen}$| scattered in the halo extending to more than 50° away from the main body of the cluster. Using a grid of simulated streams generated with |$\omega \, \mathrm{Cen}$| -like orbital properties, we then compare the on sky distribution of these candidates to the models. The results suggest that if |$\omega \, \mathrm{Cen}$| had a similar initial mass as its present day mass, then we can place a lower limit on its time of accretion at tacc > 7 Gyr ago. Alternatively, if the initial stellar mass was significantly larger, as would be expected if |$\omega \, \mathrm{Cen}$| is the remnant core of a dwarf Galaxy, then we can constrain the accretion time to tacc > 4 Gyr ago. Taken together, these results are consistent with the scenario that |$\omega \, \mathrm{Cen}$| is the remnant core of a disrupted dwarf galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first stars, galaxies, star clusters, and direct-collapse black holes are expected to have formed in low-mass (∼105–109 M⊙) haloes at Cosmic Dawn (z ∼ 10–30) under conditions of efficient gas cooling, leading to gas collapse towards the centre of the halo. The halo mass cooling threshold has been analysed by several authors using both analytical models and numerical simulations, with differing results. Since the halo number density is a sensitive function of the halo mass, an accurate model of the cooling threshold is needed for (semi-)analytical models of star formation at Cosmic Dawn. In this paper, the cooling threshold mass is calculated (semi-)analytically, considering the effects of H2-cooling and formation (in the gas phase and on dust grains), cooling by atomic metals, Lyman-α cooling, photodissociation of H2 by Lyman–Werner photons (including self-shielding by H2), photodetachment of H− by infrared photons, photoevaporation by ionization fronts, and the effect of baryon streaming velocities. We compare the calculations to several high-resolution cosmological simulations, showing excellent agreement. We find that in regions of typical baryon streaming velocities, star formation is possible in haloes of mass ≳ 1–2 × 106 M⊙ for z ≳ 20. By z ∼ 8, the expected Lyman–Werner background suppresses star formation in all minihaloes below the atomic cooling threshold (T vir = 104 K). The halo mass cooling threshold increases by another factor of ∼4 following reionization, although this effect is slightly delayed (z ∼ 4–5) because of effective self-shielding. In this paper, we extend the Tiered Radio Extragalactic Continuum Simulation (T-RECS) to include H  i emission. The H  i T-RECS model is based on the most recent H  i mass function estimates, combined with prescriptions to convert H  i mass to total integrated H  i flux. It further models source size, morphology, and kinematics, including rotational velocity and H  i line width. The continuum T-RECS model is updated to improve the agreement with deeper number counts available at 150 MHz. The model for star-forming galaxies (SFGs) is also modified according to the most recent indications of a star formation rate (SFR)–radio luminosity relation, which depends primarily on stellar mass rather than redshift. We further introduce prescriptions to associate an H  i mass with the T-RECS radio continuum SFG and active galactic nuclei (AGN) populations. This gives us a way to meaningfully associate counterparts between H  i and continuum catalogues, thus building H  i × continuum simulated observations. Clustering properties of the sources in both H  i and the continuum are reproduced by associating the galaxies with dark matter haloes in a cosmological simulation. We deliver a set of mock catalogues as well as the code to produce them, which can be used for simulating observations and predicting results from radio surveys with existing and forthcoming radio facilities, such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). This paper presents a newly established sample of 19 unique galaxies and galaxy groups at redshift z  = 0.89–1.21 in six QSO fields from the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS), designated as the CUBSz1 sample. In this sample, nine galaxies or galaxy groups show absorption features, while the other 10 systems exhibit 2σ upper limits of |$\log N (\rm{He\,{\small I}})/\mbox{${\rm cm^{-2}}$}\lesssim 13.5$| and |$\log N (\rm{O\,{\small V}})/\mbox{${\rm cm^{-2}}$}\lesssim 13.3$|⁠. Environmental properties of the galaxies, including galaxy overdensities, the total stellar mass and gravitational potential summed over all neighbours, and the presence of local ionizing sources, are found to have a significant impact on the observed CGM absorption properties. Specifically, massive galaxies and galaxies in overdense regions exhibit a higher rate of incidence of absorption. The CGM absorption properties in galaxy groups appear to be driven by the galaxy closest to the QSO sightline, rather than by the most massive galaxy or by mass-weighted properties. We introduce a total projected gravitational potential ψ, defined as −ψ/ G  = ∑ M halo/ d proj summed over all group members, to characterize the galaxy environment. This projected gravitational potential correlates linearly with the maximum density detected in each sightline (i.e. a power-law slope of |$0.95_{-0.14}^{+0.15}$|⁠), consistent with higher pressure gas being confined in deeper gravitational potential wells. In addition, we find that the radial profile of cool gas density exhibits a decline from the inner regions to the outskirts, and the amplitude is consistent with the cool gas being in pressure balance with the hot halo. Finally, we note that the ionizing flux from nearby galaxies can elevate the N (H  i)/ N (He  i) ratio, which provides a unique diagnostic of possible local sources contributing to the ionizing radiation field. We use the sample of 198 Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) analogues from TNG50 to quantify the level of disc flaring predicted by a modern, high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. Disc flaring refers to the increase of vertical stellar disc height with galactocentric distance. The TNG50 galaxies are selected to have stellar discy morphology, a stellar mass in the range of M * = 1010.5–11.2 M⊙, and an MW-like Mpc-scale environment at z = 0. The stellar discs of such TNG50 MW/M31 analogues exhibit a wide diversity of structural properties, including a number of galaxies with disc scale length and thin and thick disc scale heights that are comparable to those measured or inferred for the Galaxy and Andromeda. With one set of physical ingredients, TNG50 returns a large variety of flaring flavours and amounts, also for mono-age stellar populations. With this paper, we hence propose a non-parametric characterization of flaring. The typical MW/M31 analogues exhibit disc scale heights that are 1.5–2 times larger in the outer than in the inner regions of the disc for both old and young stellar populations, but with a large galaxy-to-galaxy variation. Which stellar population flares more, and by how much, also varies from galaxy to galaxy. TNG50 de facto brackets existing observational constraints for the Galaxy and all previous numerical findings. A link between the amount of flaring and the z = 0 global galaxy structural properties or merger history is complex. The distribution of baryons provides a significant way to understand the formation of galaxy clusters by revealing the details of its internal structure and changes over time. In this paper, we present theoretical studies on the scaled profiles of physical properties associated with the baryonic components, including gas density, temperature, metallicity, pressure and entropy as well as stellar mass, metallicity and satellite galaxy number density in galaxy clusters from z = 4 to z = 0 by tracking their progenitors. These mass-complete simulated galaxy clusters are coming from The Three Hundred with two runs: Gizmo-SIMBA and Gadget-X. Through comparisons between the two simulations, and with observed profiles that are generally available at low redshift, we find that (1) the agreements between the two runs and observations are mostly at outer radii r ≳ 0.3 r 500, in line with the self-similarity assumption. While Gadget-X shows better agreements with the observed gas profiles in the central regions compared to Gizmo-SIMBA ; (2) the evolution trends are generally consistent between the two simulations with slightly better consistency at outer radii. In detail, the gas density profile shows less discrepancy than the temperature and entropy profiles at high redshift. The differences in the cluster centre and gas properties imply different behaviours of the AGN models between Gadget-X and Gizmo-SIMBA , with the latter, maybe too strong for this cluster simulation. This is the first paper in our series on the combined analysis of the Dynamics and stellar Population (DynPop) for the MaNGA survey in the final SDSS Data Release 17 (DR17). Here, we present a catalogue of dynamically determined quantities for over 10 000 nearby galaxies based on integral-field stellar kinematics from the MaNGA survey. The dynamical properties are extracted using the axisymmetric Jeans Anisotropic Modelling (JAM) method, which was previously shown to be the most accurate for this kind of study. We assess systematic uncertainties using eight dynamical models with different assumptions. We use two orientations of the velocity ellipsoid: either cylindrically aligned JAMcyl or spherically aligned JAMsph. We also make four assumptions for the models' dark versus luminous matter distributions: (1) mass-follows-light, (2) free NFW dark halo, (3) cosmologically constrained NFW halo, (4) generalized NFW dark halo, i.e. with free inner slope. In this catalogue, we provide the quantities related to the mass distributions (e.g. the density slopes and enclosed mass within a sphere of a given radius for total mass, stellar mass, and dark matter mass components). We also provide the complete models which can be used to compute the full luminous and mass distribution of each galaxy. Additionally, we visually assess the qualities of the models to help with model selections. We estimate the observed scatter in the measured quantities which decreases as expected with improvements in quality. Galaxy populations are known to exhibit a strong colour bimodality, corresponding to blue star-forming and red quiescent subpopulations. The relative abundance of the two populations has been found to vary with stellar mass and environment. In this paper, we explore the effect of environment considering different types of measurements. We choose a sample of 49 911 galaxies with 0.05 < z < 0.18 from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey. We study the dependence of the fraction of red galaxies on different measures of the local environment as well as the large-scale 'geometric' environment defined by density gradients in the surrounding cosmic web. We find that the red galaxy fraction varies with the environment at fixed stellar mass. The red fraction depends more strongly on local environmental measures than on large-scale geometric environment measures. By comparing the different environmental densities, we show that no density measurement fully explains the observed environmental red fraction variation, suggesting the different measures of environmental density contain different information. We test whether the local environmental measures, when combined together, can explain all the observed environmental red fraction variation. The geometric environment has a small residual effect, and this effect is larger for voids than any other type of geometric environment. This could provide a test of the physics applied to cosmological-scale galaxy evolution simulations as it combines large-scale effects with local environmental impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The faint satellites of the local Universe provide an important benchmark for our understanding of structure formation and galaxy formation, but satellite populations are hard to identify beyond the Local Group. We recently developed an iterative method to quantify satellite abundance using galaxy clustering and tested it on a local sample in the COSMOS field, where accurate photometric redshifts are available for a large number of faint objects. In this paper, we consider the properties of these satellite populations in more detail, studying the satellite stellar mass function (SSMF), the satellite-central connection, and quenching as a function of satellite and central mass and colour. Despite the limited sample size, our results show good consistency with those from much larger surveys and constrain the SSMF down to some of the lowest primary masses considered to date. We reproduce several known trends in satellite abundance and quenching, and find evidence for one new one, a dependence of the quiescent fraction on the primary-to-secondary halo mass ratio. Several observational studies have shown that many Galactic globular clusters (GCs) are characterized by internal rotation. Theoretical studies of the dynamical evolution of rotating clusters have predicted that, during their long-term evolution, these stellar systems should develop a dependence of the rotational velocity around the cluster's centre on the mass of stars, with the internal rotation increasing for more massive stars. In this paper, we present the first observational evidence of the predicted rotation–mass trend. In our investigation, we exploited the Gaia Data Release 3 catalogue of three GCs: NGC 104 (47 Tuc), NGC 5139 (ω Cen), and NGC 5904 (M 5). We found clear evidence of a cluster rotation–mass relation in 47 Tuc and M 5, while in ω Cen, the dynamically youngest system among the three clusters studied here, no such trend was detected. We introduce a practical methodology for investigating the star formation and chemical evolution history of a galaxy: age-divided mean stellar populations (ADPs) from full spectrum fitting. In this method, the mass-weighted mean stellar populations and mass fractions (f mass) of young and old stellar components in a galaxy are separately estimated, which are divided with an age cut (selected to be 109.5 yr ≈3.2 Gyr in this paper). To examine the statistical reliability of ADPs, we generate 10 000 artificial galaxy spectra, each of which consists of five random simple stellar population components. Using the Penalized PiXel-Fitting (ppxf) package, we conduct full spectrum fitting to the artificial spectra with noise as a function of wavelength, imitating the real noise of Sydney-Australian Astronomical Observatory Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) galaxies. As a result, the Δ (= output − input) of age and metallicity appears to significantly depend on not only signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), but also luminosity fractions (f lum) of young and old components. At given S/N and f lum, Δ of young components tends to be larger than Δ of old components; e.g. σ(Δ[M/H]) ∼ 0.40 versus 0.23 at S/N = 30 and f lum = 50 per cent. The age-metallicity degeneracy appears to be insignificant, but Δlog(age/yr) shows an obvious correlation with Δ f mass for young stellar components (⁠|$\mathcal {R}\sim 0.6$|⁠). The impact of dust attenuation and emission lines appears to be mostly insignificant. We discuss how this methodology can be applied to spectroscopic studies of the formation histories of galaxies, with a few examples of SAMI galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Andromeda (And) XXV has previously been reported as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) with little-to-no dark matter. However, the uncertainties on this result were significant. In this study, we nearly double the number of member stars and re-derive the kinematics and mass of And XXV. We find that And XXV has a systemic velocity of νr = −107.7 ± 1.0 kms−1 and a velocity dispersion of |$\sigma _{\rm \nu }=3.7^{+1.2}_{-1.1}$|  kms−1. With this updated velocity dispersion and a new literature measurement of the radial surface brightness profile, we derive a mass contained within the half-light radius of |$M(r\lt r_{\rm h})=4.7^{+3.0}_{-2.9}\times 10^6$|  M⊙. This mass corresponds to a mass-to-light ratio of |$\text{[M/L]}_{\rm r_{h}}=25^{+17}_{-16}$|  M⊙/L⊙, demonstrating that And XXV is most-likely dark matter dominated. We also measure the metallicity of And XXV to be |$\rm [Fe/H]=-1.9\pm 0.1$|  dex, which is in agreement with previous results. Finally, we extend the analysis of And XXV to include mass modelling using GravSphere. We find that And XXV has a low central dark matter density, ρDM(150 pc) =  |$2.3^{+1.4}_{-1.1}\times 10^7$|  M⊙ kpc−3, which makes And XXV a clear outlier when compared to other local group dSphs of the similar stellar mass. In this paper, we show that to explain the observed distribution of amplitudes in a large sample of quasar light curves, a significant contribution from microlensing is required. This implies the existence of a cosmologically distributed population of stellar mass compact bodies making up a large fraction of the dark matter. Our analysis is based on the light curves of a sample of over 1000 quasars, photometrically monitored over a period of 26 yr. The intrinsic variations in quasar luminosity are derived from luminous quasars where the quasar accretion disc is too large to be microlensed by stellar mass bodies, and then synthetic light curves for the whole sample are constructed with the same statistical properties. We then run microlensing simulations for each quasar with convergence in compact bodies appropriate to the quasar redshift assuming a Lambda cold dark matter cosmology. The synthetic light curve is then superimposed on the amplification pattern to incorporate the effects of microlensing. The distribution of the resulting amplitudes can then be compared with observation, giving a very close match. This procedure does not involve optimizing parameters or fitting to the data, as all inputs such as lens mass and quasar disc size come from independent observations in the literature. The overall conclusion of the paper is that to account for the distribution of quasar light curve amplitudes it is necessary to include the microlensing effects of a cosmologically distributed population of stellar mass compact bodies, most plausibly identified as stellar mass primordial black holes. The two planetary systems, TOI-942 and TOI-421, share many similar characteristics, apart from their ages (50 Myr and 9 Gyr). Each of the stars hosts two sub-Neptune-like planets at similar orbits and in similar mass ranges. In this paper, we aim to investigate whether the similarity of the host stars and configuration of the planetary systems can be taken as proof that the two systems were formed and evolved in a similar way. In paper I of this series, we performed a comparative study of these two systems using three-dimensional (3D) modelling of atmospheric escape and its interaction with the stellar wind, for the four planets. We demonstrated that though the strong wind of the young star has a crucial effect on observable signatures, its effect on the atmospheric mass loss is minor in the evolutionary context. Here, we use atmosphere evolution models to track the evolution of planets in the younger system TOI-942 and also to constrain the past of the TOI-421 system. We demonstrate that despite all the similarities, the two planetary systems are on two very different evolutionary pathways. The inner planet in the younger system, TOI-942, will likely lose all of its atmosphere and become a super-Earth-like planet, while the outer planet will become a typical sub-Neptune. Concerning the older system, TOI-421, our evolution modelling suggests that they must have started their evolution with very substantial envelopes, which can be a hint of formation beyond the snow line. Detached eclipsing binaries are the primary tool used to measure precise masses and radii of stars. In our previous paper estimating the parameters of more than 30 000 detached eclipsing binaries, we identified 766 eclipsing binaries with additional features in their All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite light curves. Here, we characterize these 'extra-physics' systems, identifying eclipsing binaries with spotted stars, pulsating components, and candidate triple/quadruple systems. We use the Gaia , Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), and ASAS-SN variable star catalogues to search for possible blends. We use MIST (MESA Isochrones and Stellar Tracks) isochrones and evolutionary tracks to identify systems with main-sequence, subgiant, and giant primaries and highlight systems in sparsely populated regions of the colour–magnitude diagram. We find that the orbital period distribution of spotted binaries is divided by evolutionary state and find 68 with X-ray detections. For the candidate triple/quadruples and pulsating systems, we calculate the extra orbital/pulsational period and identify systems with resonances. Finally, we highlight a number of exotic systems, including eclipsing cataclysmic variables, subdwarfs, and binaries with discs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red geysers are a specific type of quiescent galaxy, denoted by twin jets emerging from their galactic centres. These bisymmetric jets possibly inject energy and heat into the surrounding material, effectively suppressing star formation by stabilizing cool gas. In order to confirm the presence and evolutionary consequences of these jets, this paper discusses the scaling, stacking, and conversion of 21-cm H  i flux data sourced from the H  i -MaNGA survey into H  i gas-to-stellar mass (G/S) spectra. Our samples were dominated by non-detections, or galaxies with weak H  i signals, and consequently by H  i upper limits. The stacking technique discussed successfully resolved emission features in both the red geyser G/S spectrum and the control sample G/S spectrum. From these stacked spectra, we find that on average, red geyser galaxies have G/S of 0.086 ± 0.011 (random) + 0.029 (systematic), while non-red geyser galaxies of similar stellar mass have a G/S ratio of 0.039 ± 0.018 (random) + 0.013 (systematic). Therefore, we find no statistically significant evidence that the H  i content of red geysers is different from the general quiescent population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nature of the newly discovered fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) is still puzzling astronomers. In this paper, we carry out a comprehensive analysis of the molecular gas, ionized gas, and stellar populations in the environment of the nearby FBOT AT2018cow based on ALMA, VLT/MUSE, and HST /WFC3 observations. A prominent molecular concentration of 6 (± 1) × 106 M⊙ is found in the vicinity of AT2018cow, which has given rise to two active star-forming complexes with ages of 4 ± 1 and ≲2.5 Myr, respectively. Each star-forming complex has a stellar mass of 3 × 105 M⊙, and has photoionized a giant H  ii region with Hα luminosity even comparable to that of the 30 Dor mini-starburst region. AT2018cow is spatially coincident with one of the star-forming complexes; however, it is most likely to reside in its foreground since it has a much smaller extinction than the complex. Its progenitor could have been formed in a different star-forming event, and the non-detection of the associated stellar population constrains the progenitor's age to be ≳10 Myr and initial mass to be ≲20 M⊙. We further find the late-time brightness of AT2018cow is unlikely to be a stellar object. Its brightness has slightly declined from 2 to 4 yr after explosion and is most likely to originate from AT2018cow itself due to some powering mechanism still working at such late times. The first deep-field observations of the JWST have immediately yielded a surprisingly large number of very high redshift candidates, pushing the frontier of observability well beyond z ≳ 10. We here present a detailed SED-fitting analysis of the 10 gravitationally lensed z ∼ 9–16 galaxy candidates detected behind the galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3−7327 in a previous paper using the BEAGLE tool. Our analysis makes use of dynamical considerations to place limits on the ages of these galaxies and of all three published SL models of the cluster to account for lensing systematics. We find the majority of these galaxies to have relatively low stellar masses |$M_{\star }\sim 10^7-10^8\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$| and young ages t age ∼ 10–100 Myr but with a few higher mass exceptions (⁠|$M_{\star }\sim 10^9\rm{-}10^{10}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠) due to Balmer-break detections at z ∼ 9–10. Because of their very blue UV-slopes, down to β ∼ −3, all of the galaxies in our sample have extremely low dust attenuations AV ≲ 0.02. Placing the measured parameters into relation, we find a very shallow M ⋆ − M UV-slope and high sSFRs above the main sequence of star formation with no significant redshift-evolution in either relation. This is in agreement with the bright UV luminosities measured for these objects and indicates that we are naturally selecting UV-bright galaxies that are undergoing intense star formation at the time they are observed. Finally, we discuss the robustness of our high-redshift galaxy sample regarding low-redshift interlopers and conclude that low-redshift solutions can safely be ruled out for roughly half of the sample, including the highest redshift galaxies at z ∼ 12–16. Galaxies display several well-behaved scaling relations between their properties, such as the star formation rate–stellar mass relation (the main sequence, MS) and the stellar mass–halo mass relation (SHMR). In principle, these scaling relations could imply different star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies and different constraints on galaxy formation physics. In this paper, we derive the SFHs of galaxies by assuming that they always follow the SHMRs at different redshifts and use an empirical model to constrain key processes in their baryon cycle. It is found that, besides cold accretion due to halo growth, outflow of gas produced by stellar feedback has to be recycled to sustain the derived SFHs of galaxies. The recycled fraction is strongly affected by the baryon fraction in accreted low-mass haloes and the mass loading factor that quantifies the ratio between the galactic outflow rate and star formation rate. Our fiducial model predicts that around 20–60 per cent of outflow is recycled in |$\sim 0.5\!-\!4\, \mathrm{Gyr}$|⁠ , while simulations predict a slightly higher recycle fraction and a lower recycle time. We argue that strong constraints on the baryon cycle process can be obtained from future observation of the circum-galactic medium (CGM) of galaxies, such as the gas cooling rate of CGM. We also find that the implied SFHs from the SHMRs indicate that galaxies stay on the MS only for part of their lifetimes. Our model reproduces the evolution of the mass–metallicity relation as well.
