The recent Typhoid Fever Surveillance in Africa Program demonstrated an overall adjusted incidence of typhoid fever 2–3 times higher than previous estimates in Africa. Recently, a single-dose typhoid conjugate vaccine that allows infants as young as 6 months old to be vaccinated was prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO). This Vi-based conjugate vaccine demonstrated robust immunogenicity after 1 dose in infants and children 6 through 23 months of age in India with no safety signal, and is currently being tested for the first time on the African continent in Malawi. A randomized, controlled, Phase II trial of Vi-TCV co-administration with the vaccinations routinely given at 9 and 15 months of age is planned in Burkina Faso. Background The COVID-19 pandemic demanded quick exchanges between experts and institutions supporting governments to provide evidence-based information in response to the crisis. Initially, there was no regular cross-country forum in the field of population health. This paper describes the set-up and benefits of implementing such a forum. Methods A group of public health practitioners from academia, national public health institutes and ministries of health decided in April 2020 to meet bi-monthly to discuss a vast array of population health topics in a structured format called a Rapid Exchange Forum (REF). An ad-hoc mailing group was established to collect responses to questions brought forward in the forum from at least five countries within 24 h. This endeavour, which evolved as network of networks was awarded an EU grant in autumn 2020 and was called PHIRI (Population Health Information Research Infrastructure). Results Responses from up to 31 countries were compiled and shared immediately via the European Health Information Portal. This exchange was complemented by special REFs that focused on the advantages and disadvantages of vaccination, for example. By July 2023, 54 REFs had taken place with topics going beyond COVID-19. Conclusion The REF demonstrated its value for quick yet evidence-based cross-country exchange in times of crisis and was highly appreciated by countries and European Commission. It demonstrated its sustainability even after the acute crisis by expanding the topics covered and managing to continue exchange with the aim of capacity building and mutual learning, making it a true EU response and coordination mechanism. A vaccine for coccidioidomycosis is likely to undergo trials in the near future. In this paper, we raise 4 questions that should be answered before its use and offer our solutions to these questions. These include defining the goals of vaccination, determining who should be vaccinated, how to measure vaccine immunity and protection, and how to address vaccine hesitancy and denial. Background The issue of reluctance towards vaccination is becoming more worrisome. Health care workers (HCWs) are the primary point of contact with individuals who make decisions about vaccination. Therefore, it is crucial that HCWs receive sufficient training and periodic updates. The main objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the HCWs' training needs in vaccination and vaccine uptake. Methods In February 2022, a search was conducted on MEDLINE, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. The search included papers written in English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Romanian, with a publication date ranging from 1 January 2011 to 24 February 2022 and conducted in Europe. To assess the methodological quality of the papers, the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies was utilized. Results The search of scientific literature yielded 640 outcomes on PubMed, 556 on Scopus and 15 on Google Scholar, for a total of 1211 records. After eliminating duplicates, screening titles and abstracts and evaluating the full text of the articles, only 25 of them were found suitable for inclusion. The studies' overall quality ranged from moderate to good. The majority of the research emphasized the need for improved knowledge of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccine efficacy, immunization schedules and vaccine adverse effects. Conclusions It is vital to prioritize educational programmes on vaccinology and vaccine hesitancy for HCWs, with the objective of improving their knowledge, awareness and attitudes. Addressing the diversity of educational backgrounds, roles and training requirements of HCWs involved in vaccination across Europe is a critical issue that must be tackled for future initiatives. Background To help distinguish vaccine-related adverse events following immunization (AEFI) from coincidental occurrences, active vaccine pharmacovigilance (VP) prospective surveillance programs are needed. From February to May 2021, we assessed the system and facility readiness for implementing active AEFI VP surveillance in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods Selected hospitals were assessed using a readiness assessment tool with scoring measures. The site assessment was conducted via in-person interviews within the specific departments in each hospital. We evaluated the system readiness with a desk review of AEFI guidelines, Expanded Program for Immunization Guidelines and Ethiopian Food and Drug Administration and Ethiopian Public Health Institute websites. Results Of the hospitals in Addis Ababa, 23.1% met the criteria for our site assessment. During the system readiness assessment, we found that essential components were in place. However, rules, regulations and proclamations pertaining to AEFI surveillance were absent. Based on the tool, the three hospitals (A, B and C) scored 60.6% (94/155), 48.3% (75/155) and 40% (62/155), respectively. Conclusions Only one of three hospitals assessed in our evaluation scored >50% for readiness to implement active AEFI surveillance. We also identified the following areas for improvement to ensure successful implementation: training, making guidelines and reporting forms available and ensuring a system that accommodates paper-based and electronic-based recording systems. Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination has decreasing protection from acquiring any infection with emergence of new variants; however, vaccination continues to protect against progression to severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The impact of vaccination status on symptoms over time is less clear. Methods Within a randomized trial on early outpatient COVID-19 therapy testing metformin, ivermectin, and/or fluvoxamine, participants recorded symptoms daily for 14 days. Participants were given a paper symptom diary allowing them to circle the severity of 14 symptoms as none (0), mild (1), moderate (2), or severe (3). This is a secondary analysis of clinical trial data on symptom severity over time using generalized estimating equations comparing those unvaccinated, SARS-CoV-2 vaccinated with primary vaccine series only, or vaccine-boosted. Results The parent clinical trial prospectively enrolled 1323 participants, of whom 1062 (80%) prospectively recorded some daily symptom data. Of these, 480 (45%) were unvaccinated, 530 (50%) were vaccinated with primary series only, and 52 (5%) vaccine-boosted. Overall symptom severity was least for the vaccine-boosted group and most severe for unvaccinated at baseline and over the 14 days (P <.001). Individual symptoms were least severe in the vaccine-boosted group including cough, chills, fever, nausea, fatigue, myalgia, headache, and diarrhea, as well as smell and taste abnormalities. Results were consistent over Delta and Omicron variant time periods. Background Immunization is a cost-effective public health strategy to reduce vaccine preventable disease, especially in childhood. Methods This paper reports the philosophy, service delivery, achievements and lessons learned from an immunization program in rural Nigeria privately financed via a corporate social responsibility initiative from GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals. Results The immunization program served the community for a 16-y period extending from 1998 until 2015, resulting in an increase in age-appropriate immunization coverage from 43% to 78%. Conclusion In its success, this immunization program exemplified the importance of early and sustained community engagement, integration of strategies to optimize implementation outcomes and effective team building well before some of these principles were accepted and codified in the literature. The project also underscores the important role that the private sector can bring to achieving critical immunization goals, especially among underserved populations and provides a model for successful public-private partnership. In the test-negative design, routine testing at health-care facilities is leveraged to estimate the effectiveness of an intervention such as a vaccine. The odds of vaccination for individuals who test positive for a target pathogen is compared with the odds of vaccination for individuals who test negative for that pathogen, adjusting for key confounders. The design is rapidly growing in popularity, but many open questions remain about its properties. In this paper, we examine temporal confounding by generalizing derivations to allow for time-varying vaccine status, including out-of-season controls, and open populations. We confirm that calendar time is an important confounder when vaccine status varies during the study. We demonstrate that, where time is not a confounder, including out-of-season controls can improve precision. We generalize these results to open populations. We use our theoretical findings to interpret 3 recent papers utilizing the test-negative design. Through careful examination of the theoretical properties of this study design, we provide key insights that can directly inform the implementation and analysis of future test-negative studies. Background In October 2015, 65 people came into direct contact with a healthcare worker presenting with a late reactivation of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the United Kingdom. Vaccination was offered to 45 individuals with an initial assessment of high exposure risk. Methods Approval for rapid expanded access to the recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus–Zaire Ebola virus (rVSV-ZEBOV) vaccine as an unlicensed emergency medicine was obtained from the relevant authorities. An observational follow-up study was carried out for 1 year following vaccination. Results Twenty-six of 45 individuals elected to receive vaccination between 10 and 11 October 2015 following written informed consent. By day 14, 39% had seroconverted, increasing to 87% by day 28 and 100% by 3 months, although these responses were not always sustained. Neutralizing antibody responses were detectable in 36% by day 14 and 73% at 12 months. Common side effects included fatigue, myalgia, headache, arthralgia, and fever. These were positively associated with glycoprotein-specific T-cell but not immunoglobulin (Ig) M or IgG antibody responses. No severe vaccine-related adverse events were reported. No one exposed to the virus became infected. Conclusions This paper reports the use of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine given as an emergency intervention to individuals exposed to a patient presenting with a late reactivation of EVD. The vaccine was relatively well tolerated, but a high percentage developed a fever ≥37.5°C, necessitating urgent screening for Ebola virus, and a small number developed persistent arthralgia. Introduction: Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. The Center for Disease Control Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recognized the potential benefits of immunizing young men beginning at age 11 or 12 years and continuing through age 21 years. The maximum age of immunization is extended through age 26 for men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, and immunocompromised men. In spite of these recommendations, vaccination of young men is currently limited by numerous patient and provider variables. The authors sought to delineate these variables as they pertain to members of the U.S. Air Force in order to guide future interventions.Methods: The study consisted of two cross-sectional surveys at a single Air Force Base in California. The protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board at David Grant Medical Center. The physician survey consisted of 10 questions that were formatted and designed to assess physicians' knowledge about the quadrivalent HPV vaccine (Gardasil) and 6 questions that were formatted and designed to assess physicians' counseling practices regarding Gardasil. The physician survey was distributed electronically via email in January 2017 to all 48 Family Medicine physicians, including both residents and staff, within the Family Medicine Residency Clinic at Travis Air Force Base. The email contained a link via Microsoft Share-point to an anonymous online survey. The patient survey was distributed in paper form to all male service members between the ages of 18 and 30 years who attended Commander's Calls over a 90-day period between January 2017 and March 2017. The patient survey included the primary outcome: proportion of respondents who had completed the HPV vaccination series. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were used to summarize the data. Contingency tables were constructed and the chi-square test or Fisher's Exact Test were performed to determine if particular demographic variables were associated with correct answers to individual knowledge questions.Results: The majority of the Family Medicine physicians surveyed have adequate knowledge of HPV and the vaccine but do not routinely offer the vaccine to their male patients. Inadequate time during the office visit was cited as the major limitation to vaccine promotion. Of the Active Duty Air Force males surveyed, only 27% completed the vaccine series. A lack of knowledge regarding the personal benefits of the vaccine and failure to remember to receive subsequent doses were cited as barriers to completion. Only one-quarter of all surveyed males were interested in speaking with a healthcare provider about HPV and/or the HPV vaccine.Conclusion: Deficiencies in public knowledge and insufficient provider practices are likely contributing to the suboptimal rates of HPV vaccination among eligible males. Additionally, eligible males are not interested in speaking with their healthcare providers about either HPV or the HPV vaccine. If the rates of HPV vaccination within the male population are to increase, health educators, public health proponents, and vaccine advocates need to devise a more effective approach to disseminate this information to eligible male recipients. Background Parents' reluctance to vaccinate their children undermines the effectiveness of vaccination programmes in Western Europe. There is anecdotal evidence suggesting a connection between the rise of political populism and vaccine hesitancy. Methods This paper analyses national-level data to examine the link between political populism and vaccine hesitancy in Western Europe. Political populism is operationalised as the percentage of people in a country who voted for populist parties in the 2014 European Parliament elections. Vaccine hesitancy is operationalised as the percentage of people in a country who believe that vaccines are not important, safe and effective according to data from the Vaccine Confidence Project (2015). Results There is a highly significant positive association between the percentage of people in a country who voted for populist parties and who believe that vaccines are not important (R = 0.7923, P = 0.007) and effective (R = 0.7222, P = 0.0035). The percentage of people who think vaccines are unsafe just misses being significant at the 5% level (R = 0.5027, P = 0.0669). Conclusions Vaccine hesitancy and political populism are driven by similar dynamics: a profound distrust in elites and experts. It is necessary for public health scholars and actors to work to build trust with parents that are reluctant to vaccinate their children, but there are limits to this strategy. The more general popular distrust of elites and experts which informs vaccine hesitancy will be difficult to resolve unless its underlying causes—the political disenfranchisement and economic marginalisation of large parts of the Western European population—are also addressed. Randomized, controlled trials are not always possible to evaluate interventions targeting infectious disease. This is frequently the case when evaluating the population-level impact of vaccines or when evaluating interventions aiming to increase vaccine uptake. Under such circumstances, an array of quasi-experimental designs is increasingly being used to evaluate the effects of vaccines on a wide range of morbidity and health service outcomes. These studies can provide valuable information on the impact of vaccination programs and other related interventions in real-world settings. Nevertheless, not all quasi-experimental designs are equal, and it is important that authors and readers are aware of their relative strengths and potential sources of bias. In this paper, we discuss what a quasi-experimental design is, when they might be used for vaccine evaluation, their strengths and limitations, and examples of their application. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has committed funding to help resource-constrained countries introduce this vaccine. In this article, the Typhoid Vaccine Acceleration Consortium forecasts demand if WHO recommendations are followed. Methods We built a model of global TCV introductions between 2020 and 2040 to estimate the demand of the vaccine for 133 countries. We estimated each country's year of introduction by examining its estimated incidence of typhoid fever, its history of introducing new vaccines, and any knowledge we have of its engagement with typhoid prevention, including intention to apply for Gavi funding. Our model predicted use in routine infant vaccination as well as campaigns targeting varying proportions of the unvaccinated population up to 15 years of age. Results Between 2020 and 2025, demand will predominantly come from African countries, many receiving Gavi support. After that, Asian countries generate most demand until 2030, when campaigns are estimated to end. Demand will then track the birth cohort of participating countries, suggesting an annual routine demand between 90 and 100 million doses. Peak demand is likely to occur between 2023 and 2026, approaching 300 million annual doses if campaign implementation is high. Conclusions In our analysis, target population for catch-up campaigns is the main driver of uncertainty. At peak demand, there is some risk of exceeding presently estimated peak production capacity. Issue/problem: Vaccinations are one of the most successful public health measures and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Despite this, there are still several challenges, such as poor resources, unequal access, and vaccine hesitancy. An exploitation of the full value of vaccinations could help contrasting them. Description of the problem: A dual approach was followed to exploit full value of vaccinations. First, the four pillars of value pinpointed by the Expert Panel on Effective Ways of Investing in Health of the European Commission, namely personal, societal, allocative, and technical value, were considered to carry out a systematic review of available papers addressing the value of vaccinations. The synthesis of data was the submitted to a panel of international experts in vaccinations who gave inputs on recommendations to drive a value-based decision-making. Results: Overall, 54 papers published from 2010 onwards addressed at least one pillar of value with most of them (83.3%) assessing a single one. Two-thirds of papers addressed the technical pillar, namely the economic value, in most cases without catching the broad economic implications. Very few studies addressed allocative and societal value highlighting the need to generate evidence to support the application of these pillars. Furthermore, some aspects of the allocative pillar, such as equity, accessibility, and appropriate use, were not addressed so far. Recommendations on research on full value of vaccinations, decision-making process and public engagement were eventually issued. Lessons: The project allowed to apply for the first the value-based approach to vaccinations. This led to the identification of current gaps in the assessment of full value of vaccinations and to recommendations to foster a value-based decision-making. These results have international relevance because of the growing attention to the value-based approach for sustainable health systems. Key messages: The full value of vaccinations need to be further investigated according to the four pillars pinpointed by the Expert Panel on Effective Ways of Investing in Health. Different actions could be promoted with respect to research, decision-making process and public engagement in order to exploit the full value of vaccination and drive a value-based decision-making. Gram-positive, nonpathogenic lactic acid bacteria ( LAB) are considered to be promising candidates for the development of novel, safe production and delivery systems of heterologous proteins. Recombinant LAB strains were shown to elicit specific systemic and mucosal immune responses against selected antigens. For this reason, this group of bacteria is considered as a potential replacement of classical, often pathogenic, attenuated microbial carriers. Mucosal administration of recombinant LAB, especially via the best explored and universal oral route, offers many advantages in comparison to systemic inoculation, and is attractive from the immunological and practical point of view. Research aimed at designing efficient, mucosally applied vaccines in combination with improved immunization efficiency, monitoring of in vivo antigen production , determination of optimal dose for vaccination, strain selection and characterization is a priority in modern vaccinology. This paper summarizes and organizes the available knowledge on the application of LAB as live oral vaccine vectors. Background: The regression discontinuity design (RDD) is a quasi-experimental approach used to avoid confounding bias in the assessment of new policies and interventions. It is applied specifically in situations where individuals are assigned to a policy/intervention based on whether they are above or below a pre-specified cut-off on a continuously measured variable, such as birth date, income or weight. The strength of the design is that, provided individuals do not manipulate the value of this variable, assignment to the policy/intervention is considered as good as random for individuals close to the cut-off. Despite its popularity in fields like economics, the RDD remains relatively unknown in epidemiology where its application could be tremendously useful.Methods: In this paper, we provide a practical introduction to the RDD for health researchers, describe four empirically testable assumptions of the design and offer strategies that can be used to assess whether these assumptions are met in a given study. For illustrative purposes, we implement these strategies to assess whether the RDD is appropriate for a study of the impact of human papillomavirus vaccination on cervical dysplasia.Results: We found that, whereas the assumptions of the RDD were generally satisfied in our study context, birth timing had the potential to confound our effect estimate in an unexpected way and therefore needed to be taken into account in the analysis.Conclusions: Our findings underscore the importance of assessing the validity of the assumptions of this design, testing them when possible and making adjustments as necessary to support valid causal inference. This paper presents a network disease model that incorporates balanced birth and death event and has infectious force in the infected state and carrier state, such as hepatitis B virus (HBV). By investigating the local stability of the disease-free equilibrium, the basic reproduction number R0 is derived and established as a sharp threshold. In particular, by using suitable Lyapunov functions and graph-theoretic results based on Kirchhoff's Matrix Tree Theorem, it is proved that if R0 <1, then the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable; whereas if R0 >1, there exists a unique endemic equilibrium, which is globally asymptotically stable. When birth and death event are ignored, the final size formula is determined. Moreover, the effects of various immunization strategies are investigated and compared by numerical simulations. Vaccination against pertussis in pregnancy is the main strategy to prevent the disease in the first trimester of life of new-borns. Effective communication is essential to successfully engage pregnant women. The use of digital devices within the outpatient setting may be helpful to engage patients before and during the consultation. The aim of this study was to develop and test an e-health tool to assess vaccine hesitancy and to deliver tailored information and education interventions to raise awareness and promote vaccine acceptance. Methods: One-hundred-and-five participants were recruited in 4 ob-gyn clinics. Participants were invited to complete a self-administered psychometric questionnaire to assess vaccine hesitancy, disease beliefs and self-efficacy perception on health behaviours on a tablet. Participants were randomly allocated to three communication-format types providing equivalent content: 1)a single video simulating a patient-doctor conversation on the topic; 2)an interactive platform with five infographics videos; 3)a paper leaflet followed by a brief consultation with the physician. The intention to get vaccinated during pregnancy was assessed through a specific question before and after the intervention. Results: In the pre-intervention phase there was no difference observed between groups in terms of the variable "intention" to get vaccinated. After the intervention, participants of groups 1 and 3 showed a higher intention to get vaccinated than group 2 at the Kruskal-Wallis test (H(2)=6.008, p < 0.05). Post-intervention intention to vaccinate correlated with Individual SelfEfficacy (rs(105)=0.30, p < 0.001) and was inversely associated with vaccine hesitancy (rs(105)=0.34, p < 0.001). Conclusions: We implemented and assessed the impact of different communication strategies to promote vaccine uptake among pregnant women. Our results suggest comparable effect may be obtained using simulated versus live patient-physician communication. Background: After rising for years, vaccination rates in Italy fell until 2015 because of unfounded safety concerns, abetted by some government and court actions. Public education and a 2017 law on mandatory vaccination have boosted rates since then. So far only a few papers have examined the correlation between beliefs and attitudes towards vaccines and the level of trust in the scientific community regarding vaccinations in the general population. Methods: Data were extracted from the Italian section of the last two editions of the European Social Survey (ESS), the first carried out between September and November 2017, the latter between December 2018 and March 2019. A descriptive analysis was conducted using survey data. In the two editions respectively 2,626 and 2,745 persons were interviewed. The main outcomes assessed was comparing the two surveys, so as to highlight the key changes in public opinion on vaccines. Results: In the 2017 edition, 19% of the respondents believed in the harmfulness of vaccines, out of them 29% did not even have trust in the scientific community while those confident in the safety of vaccines were 50%. In the 2019 survey, the proportion of those who believed vaccines to be harmful fell to 15%, the undecided rose to 15%, those opposed to the idea that vaccines are harmful became 63%, not responding people were 8%. Correspondingly, trust in the scientific community about vaccines has increased from 57% in the first survey to 70% in the last one. Conclusions: The scientific community and research bodies in the last years, in support of the Ministry of Health, have made a huge effort in the public debate on vaccines. This might play a role in increasing the public confidence in the safety of vaccines and the adherence to vaccination campaigns, changing the climate with regard to vaccination in general. The most recent internationally widespread disease outbreak occurred during the flu season of 2009 and 2010. On April 2009, the first cases of influenza A (H1N1) (Popularly called, Swine Flu) were confirmed in the USA and UK following a novel virus that was first identified in Mexico. As the virus spread rapidly, the risk of morbidity and mortality increased in several countries. In this paper, we rely on the social cognitive theory of risk to assess the willingness of the US public to comply with vaccination and reduce the risk of sickness and death from the flu. We conduct a secondary data analysis of the Pew Research for the People and Press October 2009 and investigate the factors associated with willingness to take the swine flu vaccine (n = 1000). The findings indicate that the decision to take the swine flu vaccination was highly polarized across partisan lines. Controlling for education, income and demographic factors, the likelihood of taking the vaccine was associated with party identification. Individuals that identified themselves as Democrats were more likely to be willing to take the swine vaccine than individuals that identify themselves as Republicans and Independents. Confidence in the ability of the government to deal with the swine flu crisis seems to explain party identification differences in the willingness to take the vaccine. The article discusses the time-dependent nature of influenza illness, immunization and pregnancy outcome in response to a commentary about a paper on maternal immunization and birth outcomes published in the 2016 issue. Several clarifications are made including the rates of influenza attack, seasonal and regional variability in influenza disease epidemiology, and the biological pathways linking influenza, immunization and adverse fetal outcomes.

Background: Migrants in Europe are at risk of under-immunisation and may also have lower COVID-19 vaccination intent and uptake. There is an urgent need to better understand the drivers of uptake in these groups to inform the development of migrantsensitive interventions for COVID-19 vaccination and routine vaccination beyond the pandemic. Methods: We did a systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42020219214) following PRISMA guidelines to explore factors influencing vaccine uptake in migrants in the EU/EEA and identify determinants of under-immunisation. We also held 3 participatory workshops with multinational migrant community leaders (n = 23) in London, to explore solutions and approaches to strengthen COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. Results: We included 66 papers reporting data on 262,761 migrants in the review. Numerous access-related factors (e.g. government policy, communication barriers) influenced uptake. Background Nigeria, in 2019, implemented an Integrated Measles and Meningitis A vaccination campaign (IVC) majorly in the northern part of the country including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The campaign was necessary to interrupt the transmission of these diseases in unimmunized under-fives. FCT aligned with this novel approach to reach its target population of 692697 children aged 9-59 months and 651951 children aged 1-5 years with the Measles and Men A vaccines respectively. Given the integration, FCT was going to generate twice the volume of wastes compared to previous stand-alone campaigns. This paper aims to document the best practices FCT used to incinerate the large volume of sharp wastes generated during the IVC as well as outstanding wastes generated during routine immunization (RI) services. Methods A waste management working group was inaugurated at the state level to coordinate all waste management activities in FCT. They developed a waste management plan outlining the expected amount of wastes to be generated, cost implications, mapping of incineration sites and modalities of evacuation and incineration. Result A total of 20000 safety boxes generated from the integrated Measles and Men A vaccination campaign (17645) and RI (2355) were incinerated. Conclusion FCT has incinerated all sharps generated during the 2019 integrated Measles and Men A vaccination campaign as well as outstanding routine immunization wastes. Typhoid fever is a continuing public health problem in many low- and middle-income countries; however, routine vaccination as a recommended control strategy has not been implemented in the past in most countries. Greater understanding of the typhoid fever burden, the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance, and licensure of a new generation of typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) were instrumental in paving the way for the World Health Organization (WHO) to issue a revised global policy on typhoid vaccines in March 2018. The new policy follows evidence-based recommendations by the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on immunization for routine and catch-up vaccination with TCVs and highlights considerations for universal, risk-based, or phased vaccination strategies in different settings. Further, the first WHO-prequalified TCV and Gavi funding for eligible countries make vaccination a realistic control strategy for many affected countries, especially if combined with improved water and sanitation services, strengthened surveillance systems, and appropriate antimicrobial treatment.
