The Ageing of societies is a unique historical development of mankind. Today, such ageing is recognized as a threat for developed societies. There is fear of increasing inequality in health and in access to health care. Apart from the costs of ageing and care, such fear creates intergenerational conflicts. This paper explores what values are at stake when a society ages. At issue here is the social position of the old citizens and the way in which they are regarded by their fellow citizens. Findings indicate the need to contemplate the consequences of ageing for societies and to discuss the impact these have for the values dominating contemporary post-welfare states. European welfare states were based on a balanced combination of three values: freedom, equality, and solidarity. Because these values are misbalanced now, equal accessibility of care and conditions for social participation are disappearing. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in innovation studies towards grand challenges, and in how demand-side policy instruments can supplement traditional supply-side policy measures. To contribute to an improved understanding of how demand-side policy requires new governance responses, this article presents a case study of trialling assisted living technologies to address the grand challenge of demographic ageing. The article departs from an innovation policy framework that incorporates theorising on transformational system failures, governance modes, and policy mixes. This framework serves as an entry point to explore how different modes of governance condition the ways in which demand for assisted living in healthcare is orchestrated across multiple stakeholders. The case study is embedded in a wider system shift from a reactive to a proactive system of healthcare provision, enabling the elderly to live independently at home longer and thus avoiding or postponing institutionalised care. Obesity and aging share an impaired immune system and oxidative and inflammatory stress. Therefore, the hypothesis of obesity as a possible model of premature immunosenescence has been proposed. In this study, we investigated whether adult obese mice, as a consequence of being fed with a fat-rich diet during their adolescence, showed premature immunosenescence and if this was aggravated with aging. Peritoneal cell suspensions were obtained when ICR/CD1 obese female mice were adults (28 weeks) and old (72 weeks), and several functions and antioxidant defenses were evaluated. The results showed that the chemotaxis of both macrophages and lymphocytes, phagocytosis of macrophages, activity of natural killer cells, proliferative response of lymphocytes, interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, interleukin-2, and interleukin-10 released in leukocyte cultures, as well as antioxidant and oxidant capacity were significantly impaired in adult obese mice with respect to adult nonobese mice, with values similar to those in chronologically old mice. When these obese animals grew older, although having been fed with a standard diet, they showed a higher deterioration of their immune functions in comparison with the old control group. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that a high fat intake during adolescence can produce an obesity state in adult age associated with a premature immunosenescence, which is aggravated through aging. Background. The second Wave (W2) of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), a nationally representative, longitudinal survey of older adults now between the ages of 62 and 90, conducted approximately 3,400 interviews. Selected coresidential romantic partners as well as W1 panel nonrespondents were selected for W2. Data collection included in-person questionnaires, up to 15 biomeasures, and a post-interview questionnaire. Methods. A proxy questionnaire also collected data on respondents that were deceased or in too poor health to participate in W2. Biomeasure collection included height, weight, hip and waist circumference, blood pressure, heart rate, and preventricular contraction, timed walk and chair stands, smell, saliva collection using a Salivette (cortisol), saliva passive drool in a tube (dehydroepiandrosterone, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone), dried blood spots (Epstein-Barr virus antibody titers, C-reactive protein, glycosylated hemoglobin, hemoglobin, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein), whole blood in a microtainer (cytokines), urine (creatinine, vasopressin, oxytocin), Oragene (genotype), respondent-administered vaginal swabs (bacterial vaginosis,yeast, and vaginal cell cytology), and Actiwatch (sleep patterns and activity). Results. Measures, such as response and cooperation rates, are also provided to evaluate design and implementation. Discussion.
