Modal analysis is a widely applied method to study the vibration phenomenon of continuum structures, but there is no clear method to solve the modal truncation problem at present. To determine the contribution of different modes to the whole system, a new mode truncation method based on perturbation theory is proposed in this paper. The modes are subjected to perturbation parameters during discretization, and using norm error analysis on the stiffness matrix in different degrees of freedom (DOFs) systems confirms the model number of the continuum structure system. The results show that the DOF identified by the modal perturbation method is related to the perturbation parameter, and the smaller the perturbation parameter is, the fewer modes need to be considered. When the perturbation parameter is large enough, the response of the system can only be accurately explained by truncation to higher-order modes. Finally, the perturbation parameter is fixed to 1, and the traditional Galerkin method is connected to the modal perturbation, making traditional discretization a unique case for the modal perturbation method. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are a novel class of composite materials that have attracted significant attention in the field of engineering due to their unique mechanical properties. This study aims to explore the dynamic behaviors of an FGM stepped beam with different boundary conditions based on an efficient solving method. Under the assumptions of the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the governing differential equations of an individual FGM beam are derived with Hamilton's principle and decoupled via the separation-of-variable approach. Then, the free and forced vibrations of the FGM stepped beam are solved with the transfer matrix method (TMM). Two models, i.e., a three-level FGM stepped beam and a five-level FGM stepped beam, are considered, and their natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented. To demonstrate the validity of the method in this paper, the simulation results by ABAQUS are also given. On this basis, the detailed parametric analyses on the frequencies and dynamic responses of the three-level FGM stepped beam are carried out. The results show the accuracy and efficiency of the TMM. Conductive cardiac patches can rebuild the electroactive microenvironment for the infarcted myocardium but their repair effects benefit by carried seed cells or drugs. The key to success is the effective integration of electrical stimulation with the microenvironment created by conductive cardiac patches. Besides, due to the concerns in a high re-admission ratio of heart patients, a remote medicine device will underpin the successful repair. Herein, we report a miniature self-powered biomimetic trinity triboelectric nanogenerator with a unique double-spacer structure that unifies energy harvesting, therapeutics, and diagnosis in one cardiac patch. Trinity triboelectric nanogenerator conductive cardiac patches improve the electroactivity of the infarcted heart and can also wirelessly monitor electrocardiosignal to a mobile device for diagnosis. RNA sequencing analysis from rat hearts reveals that this trinity cardiac patches mainly regulates cardiac muscle contraction-, energy metabolism-, and vascular regulation-related mRNA expressions in vivo. The research is spawning a device that truly integrates an electrical stimulation of a functional heart patch and self-powered e-care remote diagnostic sensor. Bacterial species within the Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus (Acb) complex are very similar and are difficult to discriminate. Misidentification of these species in human infection may lead to severe consequences in clinical settings. Therefore, it is important to accurately discriminate these pathogens within the Acb complex. Raman spectroscopy is a simple method that has been widely studied for bacterial identification with high similarities. In this study, we combined surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with a set of machine learning algorithms for identifying species within the Acb complex. According to the results, the support vector machine (SVM) model achieved the best prediction accuracy at 98.33% with a fivefold cross-validation rate of 96.73%. Taken together, this study confirms that the SERS-SVM method provides a convenient way to discriminate between A. baumannii, Acinetobacter pittii, and Acinetobacter nosocomialis in the Acb complex, which shows an application potential for species identification of Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex in clinical settings in near future. The Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA) is a cutting-edge swarm intelligence algorithm that models the social status ties and hunting behavior of chimps to solve complex optimization problems. Although ChOA is known for its simplicity and efficiency, it may encounter challenges such as convergence speed and local optima. This study presents a comprehensive and competitive multi-strategy-enhanced chimp optimization algorithm (SLDChOA), which comprehensively enhances the optimization performance of the algorithm through four strategies. Firstly, a low-difference Sobol sequence strategy is used to initialize the chimp population to increase the diversity of the initial population. Secondly, different location update strategies are adopted according to different iteration stages. The early iteration stage employs the Lévy flight-based location update strategy to help chimps explore the space more abundantly and improve the global search ability of the algorithm. In contrast, the proposed probability-based elitist operation strategy is used in the late iteration stage to help the chimps obtain higher-quality optimal solutions and improve the convergence accuracy and speed of the algorithm. Finally, the dimension learning-based hunting search strategy is introduced to facilitate information sharing among chimps and enable the algorithm to jump out of the local optimum effectively. To demonstrate its comprehensive performance, SLDChOA is compared with 17 state-of-the-art algorithms on 23 traditional benchmark functions, CEC 2014 and CEC 2019 test sets (totaling 63 test functions). Moreover, its efficacy and excellence are further demonstrated in 4 well-known engineering optimization issues and 2 feature selection problems of multimodal Parkinson's speech datasets. Autotrophic denitrification technology has many advantages, including no external carbon source addition, low sludge production, high operating cost efficiency, prevention of secondary sewage pollution, and stable treatment efficiency. At present, the main research on autotrophic denitrification electron donors mainly includes sulfur, iron, and hydrogen. In these autotrophic denitrification systems, pyrite has received attention due to its advantages of easy availability of raw materials, low cost, and pH stability. When pyrite is used as a substrate for autotropic denitrification, sulfide (S2−) and ferrous ion (Fe2+) in the substrate will provide electrons to convert nitrate (NO3−) in sewage first to nitrite (NO2−), then to nitrogen (N2), and finally to discharge the system. At the same time, sulfide (S2−) loses electrons to sulfate (SO42−) and ferrous ion (Fe2+) loses electrons to ferric iron (Fe3+). Phosphates (PO43−) in wastewater are chemically combined with ferric iron (Fe3+) to form ferric phosphate (FePO4) precipitate. This paper aims to provide a detailed and comprehensive overview of the dynamic changes of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and other substances in the process of sulfur autotrophic denitrification using iron sulfide, and to summarize the factors that affect wastewater treatment in the system. This work will provide a relevant research direction and theoretical basis for the field of sulfur autotrophic denitrification, especially for the related experiments of the reaction conversion of various substances in the system. Stabilizing active PtNi alloy catalyst toward oxygen reduction reaction is essential for fuel cell. Doping of specific metals is an empirical strategy, however, the atomistic insight into how dopant boosts the stability of PtNi catalyst still remains elusive. Here, with typical examples of Mo and Au dopants, we identify the distinct roles of Mo and Au in stabilizing PtNi nanowires catalysts. Specifically, due to the stronger interaction between atomic orbital for Ni-Mo and Pt-Au, the Mo dopant mainly suppresses the outward diffusion of Ni atoms while the Au dopant contributes to the stabilization of surface Pt overlayer. Inspired by this atomistic understanding, we rationally construct the PtNiMoAu nanowires by integrating the different functions of Mo and Au into one entity. Such catalyst assembled in fuel cell cathode thus presents both remarkable activity and durability, even surpassing the United States Department of Energy technical targets for 2025. Doping strategies have been shown to stabilize the active platinum-nickel (PtNi) catalyst in fuel cells, however, the atomistic mechanism is less known. Microbial metabolism analysis is of great significance to the biosynthesis industries and the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases caused by microorganisms. However, it remains a grand challenge to offer deep insight into microbial metabolism due to the particularly complex and dynamic processes. Analytical methods are recognized as the critical bottleneck that constrains the in-depth understanding of microbial metabolism. Specific and real-time analytical tools for microbial metabolic processes have currently drawn increasing attention. Here, we summarized the major advances over the past 5 years focusing on the following three aspects including real-time and dynamic analysis of metabolic molecules, selective analysis of specific metabolic pathways and quantitative analysis of the microbial metabolism. Microbial communication can drive coordinated functions through sensing, analyzing and processing signal information, playing critical roles in biomanufacturing and life evolution. However, it is still a great challenge to develop effective methods to construct a microbial communication system with coordinated behaviors. Here, we report an electron transfer triggered redox communication network consisting of three building blocks including signal router, optical verifier and bio-actuator for microbial metabolism regulation and coordination. In the redox communication network, the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox signal can be dynamically and reversibly transduced, channeling electrons directly and specifically into bio-actuator cells through iron oxidation pathway. The redox communication network drives gene expression of electron transfer proteins and simultaneously facilitates the critical reducing power regeneration in the bio-actuator, thus enabling regulation of microbial metabolism. In this way, the redox communication system efficiently promotes the biomanufacturing yield and CO2 fixation rate of bio-actuator. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that this redox communication strategy is applicable both in co-culture and microbial consortia. The proposed electron transfer triggered redox communication strategy in this work could provide an approach for reducing power regeneration and metabolic optimization and could offer insights into improving biomanufacturing efficiency. Primary pulmonary sarcoma (PPS) is a rare and poor prognostic malignancy that results from current clinical studies are lacking. Our study aimed to investigate the prognostic factors of PPS and to construct a predictive nomogram that predict the overall survival (OS) rate. We extracted data on patients diagnosed with PPS from 2010 to 2019 in the SEER database. A total of 169 patients were included after screening by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Univariate and multivariate COX regression analyses showed that age, pathological grade, liver metastasis, surgical intervention, and chemotherapy influenced the prognosis. We constructed the prediction model nomogram based on these factors. Moreover, the results of the internal and external ROC curves, calibration curves, and DCA plots confirmed that the model has good discrimination, accuracy, and clinical practice efficacy. The present study is the first population-based study to explore the factors affecting the prognosis of PPS. Voice coil motor (VCM) has obvious rate-dependent hysteresis characteristics, which means that when the frequency of the input signal changes, the travel distance and the shape of the hysteresis loop will change significantly. Based on the Nonlinear Auto-Regressive with Exogenous Inputs (NARX) neural network model, a rate-dependent hysteresis model consisting of a transfer function sub-model of the VCM and a NARX neural network sub-model is proposed for VCM in this paper. Different from the commonly used rate-dependent operator model, the proposed model has a relatively simple mathematic format. By introducing the transfer function of VCM, the initial prediction of the amplitude and phase shift is realized dynamically, which ensures the nonlinear fitting effect of the NARX neural network. Comparisons of the model responses with the measured data under different frequencies of input current signals indicate that the proposed model can dynamically describe the nonlinear rate-dependent hysteresis of VCM with very high accuracy. On this basis, the inverse model is designed by adopting the method of direct inverse, and the effectiveness of the inverse model in trajectory tracking is preliminarily verified by simulation. To elucidate the immune evasion role of amino-acid mutations during the BA.4/5 wave, we generated 34 variants with single amino-acid RBD mutations on the BA.4/5 spike backbone (Fig. The XBB-NTD mutations may not only reduce the effectiveness of NTD antibodies but also eliminate their synergistic effects in facilitating the neutralization activities of RBD-antibodies, specifically those RBD antibodies that remain resistant to XBB-RBD mutations, and vice versa. Given that the BA.4/5 and XBB share an identical S2, these results demonstrated that both RBD- and NTD-targeting antibodies contribute significantly to spike-elicited neutralization activities and multiple mutations on the two domains have synergetic effects in causing remarkable evasion. Demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) is an osteoconductive and osteoinductive material that has been successfully used in sinus floor augmentation and alveolar ridge augmentation in clinical applications. It releases bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and other growth factors, making DDM a suitable grafting material. However, the granular particle of DDM makes it difficult to anchor into the bone defect area. The aim of this study was to investigate the biological effects and osteoinductivity of the combination of DDM and Fibrin Glue (FG) at an optimal ratio on bone healing from a critical bone defect in an animal model. The mouse osteoblastic cell line (MC3T3-E1) was co-cultured with various ratios of DDM and FG to examine their effects on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, as indicated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, osteocalcin (OC) production and mineralized nodules formation. The optimal ratio was then chosen for further study with a rabbit calvarial defective model, in which they were implanted with DDM or DDM-FG1 (1 g: 0.1 ml) and DDM-FG2 (1 g: 0.5 ml) compounds, or left blank for 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks to investigate soft tissue and new bone regeneration. Micro-CT and histology analysis were used to evaluate the total grafting properties according to the different healing periods. The result from in vitro studies demonstrated that the ratio of 1:0.1 induced more ALP activity and mineralized nodules, while the ratio of 1: 0.5 (DDM-FG combined) induced more osteocalcin (OC) at specific time points. In the animal model, the 3D new bone volume in all DDM-FG treatment groups was significantly greater than that in the blank group at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Furthermore, the new bone volume was greater in DDM-FG2 when compared to the other groups during the early weeks of the healing period. In histological analysis, clusters of osteoblasts were formed adjacent to the DDM particles, and newly formed bone was observed in all groups, suggesting an osteoinductive property of DDM. Moreover, the greater new collagen synthesis observed at 4 weeks suggested that early bone healing was induced in the DDM-FG2 group. The (GaN)1−x(ZnO)x solid solution is an ideal material for the next generation photocatalyst due to good chemical stability and excellent optical property. Although full range content regulation of ZnO has been achieved, the isomeric phenomena of solid solutions make it difficult to establish a structure–property relationship. Here, we constructed a series of random (GaN)1−x(ZnO)x structures and calculated the band properties using DFT. Seven supervised machine learning models were trained to understand band properties base on microstructure. The results show that the Random Forest Regressor model is optimal for predicting band gap and band edge position with proposed microstructure descriptors. Feature importance and SHAP analyses indicate four local microstructures are main structural factors influencing band structure. Having grown up in an "always-on" technological environment, Generation Z differ significantly in attitudes and lifestyles compared to previous generations. However, their travel behaviors have not been widely discussed and adequately understood. Using data from the latest three National Household Travel Surveys in the United States, we in this paper identify the uniqueness of Gen Z in travel behaviors and preferences, and use the zero-inflated Poisson model to test the impacts of key factors on the mode choices. Results from the longitudinal analysis indicated that Gen Z are not always more environmentally friendly than same-age people in the past decades, while Gen Z have a stronger tendency to travel in a green way in response to changes in built environment than their counterparts decades ago. These findings demonstrate that Gen Z, who have been greatly affected by technological advances and social media, may show unprecedented potential to support sustainable transportation. Craquelure is the most common defect on ancient polychrome paintings, which may deteriorate further to paint loss. Previous image processing methods, which can accurately recognize paint loss, have limited precision and efficiency in segmenting craquelure. This paper proposes a semantic segmentation method, Res-UNet, for the recognition of craquelure and paint loss in the Palace Museum, Beijing. The residual structure of ResNet-50 enables the avoidance of network degradation, and image features can be fully extracted. Using the unique skip connection module of U-Net, features of different levels are fused to improve segmentation accuracy and provide smoother craquelure edges. Three loss functions are combined to accelerate stable convergence. The model was tested on a newly built dataset based on 600 images. Experimental results supported by statistical tests show that Res-UNet is a capable method of craquelure recognition, with an accuracy rate of 98.19%, and F1-score of 93.42%. Low-cost and underutilized plant fibers can affect the mechanical behavior of cementitious materials such as cemented tailings backfill (CTB). This paper attempts to explore the mechanical properties and damage evolution characteristics of rice straw fiber (RFS)-reinforced CTB (RSFCTB) from the perspective of energy. A series of mechanical and microscopic tests were carried out on CTB and RSFCTB samples. On this basis, the energy evolution law and of the filling body under different stress paths were analyzed. Meanwhile, a damage variable based on dissipation energy was established, and the damage evolution process of the filling body was discussed. The results show that uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of filling body first grew and then dropped with the enhancement of RSF content, and indirect tensile strength (ITS) was positively correlated with RSF content. Scanning electron microscope showed that RSF was encapsulated by hydration products, which promoted the bridging effect of RSF. The bridging effect of RSF improved the integrity of RSFCTB after compression failure and resulted in bending and asymmetric tensile cracks after tensile failure. The energy storage limit and dissipation energy of the filling body under different stress paths were enhanced due to the incorporation of RSF. The damage curve based on dissipation energy showed three stages of slow, steady, and fast damage under compressive loading. The damage curve of RSFCTB was located below CTB depending on the crack arresting effect of RSF. Moreover, the damage curve under tensile load shows three stages: slow, stable damage, and sudden increase in damage. The damage value of RSFCTB at the mutation point was increased, and the ability of RSFCTB to resist tensile damage was enhanced. The energy evolution and acoustic emission parameters were combined, and their development trends were similar, which proved that it was reasonable to characterize the damage of filling body based on the dissipated energy. Group blind signature (GBS) is the combination of group signature and blind signature (BS) concepts [1]. GBS allows any member of the group to generate a valid signature on behalf of the group, and the signer as a group member has no knowledge of the specific content of the message he or she is signing. In order to improve the suitability of group blind signatures for practical applications, it is significant to study GBS schemes that can flexibly add and remove group members. Therefore, in this article, we will propose a dynamic quantum group blind signature (QGBS) scheme based on four-particle cluster states. Cluster states are characterized by maximum connectivity and continuous entanglement. Some quantum technologies provide unconditional security for our scheme, such as quantum one-time pad (QOTP) and quantum key distribution protocol. If there is a dispute about who generated the signature, our scheme can identify the signer by opening the signature. As a carrier of genetic information, DNA is a versatile module for fabricating nanostructures and nanodevices. Functional molecules could be integrated into DNA by precise base complementary pairing, greatly expanding the functions of DNA nanomaterials. These functions endow DNA nanomaterials with great potential in the application of biomedical field. In recent years, functional DNA nanomaterials have been rapidly investigated and perfected. There have been reviews that classified DNA nanomaterials from the perspective of functions, while this review primarily focuses on the preparation methods of functional DNA nanomaterials. This review comprehensively introduces the preparation methods of DNA nanomaterials with functions such as molecular recognition, nanozyme catalysis, drug delivery, and biomedical material templates. Then, the latest application progress of functional DNA nanomaterials is systematically reviewed. Finally, current challenges and future prospects for functional DNA nanomaterials are discussed. The mechanical characteristics of cemented paste backfill (CPB) are significantly influenced by the loading rate (LR) and initial defects. Therefore, the CPB with prefabricated fracture (PF, PFCPB) was prepared, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests considering LR and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring were performed. The particle flow code (PFC2D) was introduced to analyze the mesoscopic crack evolution of the filling body, and the moment tensor theory was used to invert the AE signals characteristics. The results show that as the PF angle increased, the UCS and elastic modulus (EM) of PFCPB decreased and then increased, and the 30° PF was the turning point. The mechanical properties of PFCPB were deteriorated by the presence of PF. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of PFCPB were positively correlated with the LR. The stress–strain curve of PFCB (excluding 90°) showed bimodal curves. After the UCS test, the macro crack of PFCPB sprouted at the tip of PF or converged toward PF. PFCPB mainly suffered from shear failure, accompanied by a few tensile failures. Numerical simulation results showed that the crack initiation stress of PFCPB was reduced by the PF. The number of cracks first dropped and then gradually increased when the PF angle was enhanced, while gradually increased with the LR increased. Meanwhile, the mesoscopic AE characteristics of CPB were strongly in line with the test results. The AE events of 0 ~ 60° PFCPB experienced two slow rising periods and rapid rising periods. The temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of AE corresponded to the crack evolution trend. The PF was prone to stress concentration, especially at the tip and upper and lower surfaces of 0 ~ 45° PF, resulting in rapid crack initiation and reducing the energy storage limit and mechanical behavior of 0 ~ 45° PFCPB. The increasing LR (within a certain range) was in favor of improving the mechanical behavior of the filling body. Shrub removal is a common management method in forest ecosystems, but comparatively little is known regarding the effects of shrub removal on soil microbial communities among primary forest, secondary forest, and plantation forests in temperate forests, which limits our accurate assessment of sustainable management of understory vegetation removal. Given this, we used a long-term operation experiment across a contrasting mixed broadleaved-Pinus koraiensis forest, Betula platyphylla forest, and Larix gmelinii plantation forest to explore the variations of soil properties and microbial community after 5 years of shrub removal on Changbai Mountain, as well as the contribution of the soil properties and understory plant diversity to the soil microbial community. The results demonstrated that shrub removal could significantly alter soil SWC and TN, TP, and AP contents of the L. gmelinii, as well as N/P of B. platyphylla. Moreover, shrub removal also clearly improved soil bacterial Pielou_e index and Simpson index of mixed broadleaved-P. koraiensis and soil bacterial Simpson index of L. gmelinii, and decreased soil fungal Pielou_e index and Shannon index of L. gmelinii and soil bacterial Pielou_e index and soil fungal Shannon index of B. platyphylla. Identically, shrub removal notably altered the soil bacterial community composition. Soil characteristics and understory plant diversity accounted for 48.02% and 26.88%, and 45.88% and 27.57% of the variance in the bacterial and fungal community composition, respectively. Signal pathways participate in vital biological processes and regulate complex life activities through protein modifications. Protein modifications in signal pathways are accompanied by electron transfer. The study of electronic behavior helps to explore the physical and chemical processes in signal pathways, receiving extensive attention. There are some excellent reviews that have summarized methods for signal pathway detection, while few discussions are from an electron transfer perspective. This review describes the relationship between signal pathways and electron transfer in protein modification. Subsequently, we summarize the electron transfer-based detection methods, such as electrochemical, photoelectrochemical and electrochemiluminescence methods. Additionally, the applications of signal pathway detection in mechanism study and imaging are also reviewed. Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), a potent antimalarial drug, also exhibits distinct property in modulation on Treg and B cells, which has been recognized for decades, but the underlying mechanisms remain understood. Herein we revealed that DHA could promote Treg proliferation, meanwhile, suppress B cell expansion in germinal centers, and consequently decrease the number of circulating plasma cells and the content of serum immunoglobulins. Further, DHA-activated Treg significantly mitigated lipopolysaccharide-induced and malaria-associated inflammation. All these scenarios were attributed to the upregulation of c-Fos expression by DHA and enhancement of its interaction with target genes in both Treg and circulating plasma cells with bilateral cell fates. In Treg, the c-Fos-DHA complex upregulated cell proliferation-associated genes and promoted cell expansion; whereas in plasma cells, it upregulated the apoptosis-related genes resulting in decreased circulating plasma cells. Thus, the bilateral immunoregulatory mechanism of DHA was elucidated and its application in the treatment of autoimmune diseases is further justified. Pathogenic oral biofilms especially acid-producing ones cause a variety of oral diseases such as dental caries. Given that bacteria are embedded within the biofilms matrix to prevent the penetration of therapeutic drugs, people have explored the applications of nanoparticles to treat oral diseases. However, current nanoparticle-mediated eradication has not achieved the precise treatment of biofilms, and the stabilities of nanoparticles go on strike because of acidic environment leading to poor therapeutic effectiveness. Herein, we design an integrated nanozyme, CoPt@graphene@glucose oxidase (CoPt@G@GOx), which has cascade reaction activity with two-step process. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) produced through the glucose oxidation by GOx serves as the substrate for peroxidase-mimic CoPt@G to produce highly toxic hydroxyl radical under acidic environment. Compared to the simple mixture of GOx and CoPt@G, CoPt@G@GOx shows around fourfold catalytic effect enhancement. Meanwhile, CoPt@G@GOx can precisely target the location of the biofilms, which ensures the minimal impact on normal soft-tissues. Relying on the advantage of the magneto-actuated cascade catalytic activity, CoPt@G@GOx reveals a superior antibacterial ability in the Streptococcus mutans biofilms model. The tissue-resident skeletal stem cells (SSCs), which are self-renewal and multipotent, continuously provide cells (including chondrocytes, bone cells, marrow adipocytes, and stromal cells) for the development and homeostasis of the skeletal system. In recent decade, utilizing fluorescence-activated cell sorting, lineage tracing, and single-cell sequencing, studies have identified various types of SSCs, plotted the lineage commitment trajectory, and partially revealed their properties under physiological and pathological conditions. In this review, we retrospect to SSCs identification and functional studies. We discuss the principles and approaches to identify bona fide SSCs, highlighting pioneering findings that plot the lineage atlas of SSCs. The roles of SSCs and progenitors in long bone, craniofacial tissues, and periosteum are systematically discussed. We further focus on disputes and challenges in SSC research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplastics are widely distributed in the environment, raising significant concerns owing to their potential negative effects on humans. Zebrafish were used in this study to assess the toxicity of microplastic exposure. Adult zebrafish were exposed to polyethylene (PE) microplastics with smooth clustered sphere shapes and diameters of 75–100 µm for 35 days. Survival rates of the zebrafish were not significantly affected, whereas growth rates were. Analyses on oxidative stress-related enzyme activities showed that glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and glutathione s-transferase (GST) production in the intestines was stimulated when exposed to low concentrations of microplastics (0.1 and 1 mg/L), while superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), GSH, and GSH-PX production was suppressed when exposed to 10 mg/L microplastics. Enzyme activities in the muscles were much less affected. Intestinal injuries and changes in colony structure in the intestines were observed in zebrafish following exposure to microplastics. After 35 days of exposure, concurrent exposure to microplastics and Aeromonas hydrophila did not increase zebrafish mortality compared with those challenged by bacteria alone. This study confirms that intestinal enzyme activities of zebrafish are altered by exposure to PE microplastics but mortality and bacterial infection were not significantly affected under the tested conditions. Arctigenin (Arc) is a phenylpropanoid dibenzylbutyrolactone lignan in Arctium lappa L, which has been widely applied as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for treating inflammation. In the present study, we explored the neuroprotective effect and the potential mechanisms of arctigenin against LPS-evoked neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and memory impairments in the mice hippocampus. Daily administration of arctigenin (50 mg/kg per day, i.g.) for 28 days revealed noticeable improvements in spatial learning and memory deficits after exposure to LPS treatment. Arctigenin prevented LPS-induced neuronal/synaptic injury and inhibited the increases in Abeta (Aβ) generation and the levels of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and β-site amyloid precursor protein cleavage enzyme 1 (BACE1). Moreover, arctigenin treatment also suppressed glial activation and reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines. In LPS-treated BV-2 microglial cells and mice, activation of the TLR4 mediated NF-κB signaling pathway was significantly suppressed by arctigenin administration. Mechanistically, arctigenin reduced the LPS-induced interaction of adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) with TLR4 and its coreceptor CD14 and inhibited the TLR4-mediated downstream inflammatory response. The outcomes of the current study indicate that arctigenin mitigates LPS-induced apoptotic neurodegeneration, amyloidogenesis and neuroinflammation as well as cognitive impairments, and suggest that arctigenin may be a potential therapeutic candidate for neuroinflammation/neurodegeneration-related diseases. The immunomodulatory potential of dihydroartemisinin (DHA) has recently been highlighted; however, the potential mechanism remains to be clarified. Single-cell RNA sequencing was explored in combination with cellular and biochemical approaches to elucidate the immunomodulatory mechanisms of DHA. In this study, we found that DHA induced both spleen enlargement and rearrangement of splenic immune cell subsets in mice. It was revealed that DHA promoted the reversible expansion of effective regulatory T cells and interferon-γ+ cytotoxic CD8+ T cells in the spleen via induction of superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) expression and increased phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and its downstream activator protein 1 (AP-1) transcription factors. Further, SOD3 knockout mice were resistant to the regulatory effect of DHA. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based adsorbents for copper ion (Cu2+) generally have the disadvantages of instability in water, low adsorption capacity, and selectivity. Aimed at such problems, we fabricated MOF-199 coated with polyaniline (MOF-199@PANI, core@shell) composite for specific adsorption of Cu2+ in water efficiently. Combined with the characterization by SEM, XRD, and FT-IR, the comprehensively excellent performance probably derived from porous structures of MOF-199, as well as the complexation between Cu2+ and the N atoms of imine moieties in PANI. In addition, the coating process by PANI perfectly protected the MOF skeleton. The isothermal data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model, of which the calculated adsorption capacity reached 7831.34 mg/g. It was one or two orders of magnitude higher than some other new absorbent for Cu2+ including some carbon-based or organic adsorbents. On the basis of the optimization including pH value, temperature, and ratio of raw materials, the fabricated composite has realized the removal of the spiked Cu2+ in actual fresh water and industrial wastewater samples. A new type of Galerkin finite element for first-order initial-value problems (IVPs) is proposed. Both the trial and test functions employ the same m-degreed polynomials. The adjoint equation is used to eliminate one degree of freedom (DOF) from the test function, and then the so-called condensed test function and its consequent condensed Galerkin element are constructed. It is mathematically proved and numerically verified that the condensed element produces the super-convergent nodal solutions of O(h2m+2), which is equivalent to the order of accuracy by the conventional element of degree m + 1. Some related properties are addressed, and typical numerical examples of both linear and nonlinear IVPs of both a single equation and a system of equations are presented to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed element. In this paper, we analyze the security of subset-resilient hash function families, which is first proposed as a requirement of a hash-based signature scheme called HORS. Let H be a family of functions mapping an element to a subset of size at most k. (r, k)-subset resilience guarantees that given a random function H from H , it is hard to find an (r + 1) -tuple (x , x 1 , ... , x r) such that (1) H(x) is covered by the union of H (x i) and (2) x is not equal to any x i . Subset resilience and its variants are related to nearly all existing stateless hash-based signature schemes, but the power of this security notion is lacking in research. We present three results on subset resilience. First, we show a generic quantum attack against subset resilience, whose time complexity is smaller than simply implementing Grover's search. Second, we show that subset-resilient hash function families imply the existence of distributional collision-resistant hash function families. Informally, distributional collision resistance is a relaxation of collision resistance, which guarantees that it is hard to find a uniform collision for a hash function. This result implies a comparison among the power of subset resilience, collision resistance, and distributional collision resistance. In vivo electron transfer processes are closely related to the activation of signaling pathways, and, thus, affect various life processes. Indeed, the signaling pathway activation of key molecules may be associated with certain diseases. For example, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation is related to the occurrence and development of tumors. Hence, monitoring the activation of EGFR-related signaling pathways can help reveal the progression of tumor development. However, it is challenging for current detection methods to monitor the activation of specific signaling pathways in complex biochemical reactions. Here we designed a highly sensitive and specific nanoprobe that enables in vivo imaging of electronic transfer over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. By using the ferrocene-DNA polymer "wire", the electrons transferred in a biochemical reaction can flow to persistent luminescent nanoparticles and change their electron distribution, thereby altering the optical signal of the particles. This electron transfer-triggered imaging probe enables mapping the activation of EGFR-related signaling pathways in a temporally and spatially precise manner. By offering precise visualization of signaling activity, this approach may offer a general platform not only for understanding molecular mechanisms in various biological processes but also for promoting disease therapies and drug evaluation. Reduced salinity is a major factor that causes macrobenthic degradation in reclaimed wetlands. We investigated populations of the sesarmid crab Chiromantes dehaani in reclaimed and natural wetlands. Then, in the laboratory, we exposed male and female crabs to four salinity levels (0, 6, 12 and 18) for 96 h to analyse the effects of reduced salinity on osmoregulatory enzyme activities in the posterior gills and digestive and immune enzyme activities in the hepatopancreas of C. dehaani. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between the number of crabs and salinity. In the laboratory, we found that the isosmotic point of C. dehaani was close to 16 ppt. The crabs showed strong hyper-osmotic regulation when exposed to 0–6 ppt salinities. Moreover, in this salinity range, amylase activities were significantly inhibited. Under low-salinity stress, the immune enzyme activities were significantly activated. However, phenoloxidase and lysozyme activities were inhibited in the freshwater environment. The male and female crabs showed no significant differences in most of the enzyme activities. Thus, reduced salinity can adversely affect the digestive and immune functions of C. dehaani, which may cause population degradation in reclaimed wetlands. To check if it is possible for crayfish to reduce the weed biomass in a paddy field, we hypothesised that crayfish can feed on common weeds in a paddy field. The feeding ability of red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, males and females for 4 weeds, Ludwigia prostrata Roxb., Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees, Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv and Eclipta prostrata L., commonly found in rice–crayfish fields were evaluated using a quantitative feeding experiment and behaviour observation experiment. The results of the quantitative feeding and behaviour experiments were highly consistent. The P. clarkii gender and weed species had no interactive effects on survival rate, the daily feed intake (FI) and percentage of daily feed intake (PFI). The results of the quantitative feeding experiment showed that the FI and PFI values of both P. clarkii females and males were significantly higher in the P. clarkii feed group than in the weed treatment group. Both FI and PFI were significantly higher in the L. chinensis group than in the other treatment groups. The survival rate of P. clarkii was significantly lower in the E. crusgalli group than in the other treatment groups. The behaviour observation experiment showed that the feeding frequency and duration were in the order of L. chinensis > E. prostrata > L. prostrata > E. crusgalli. The results indicate that the P. clarkii specimens liked to eat L. chinensis (mean PFI was more than 2%), hardly fed on E. crusgalli. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Surgical treatment for hepatic cystic ehinococcosis (CE) is not standardized in Kashi Prefecture. Previous evidence identified effectiveness of a clinical pathway in the field of liver surgery. However, proof of a clinical pathway program, especially for CE patients, is lacking. This study aimed to assess the validity of a clinical pathway for hepatic CE surgery performed on patients from Kashi Prefecture. Methods: A clinical pathway was developed and implemented by a multidisciplinary team for patients undergoing hepatic CE surgery. Two groups were formed from patients undergoing hepatic CE surgery during a defined period before and after implementing a clinical pathway. Additionally, a propensity score matching analysis was performed. Results: In the overall analysis (n = 258) as well as the matched analysis (n = 166), after implementing the clinical pathway, hospital stay was significantly reduced from 13 to 10 days and from 14 to 10 days, respectively (P < 0.05). Postoperative morbidity did not increase. Cost analysis showed a significant decrease in median costs of medication and nursing in favor of the clinical pathway (medication: 5400 CNY vs. 6400 CNY, P = 0.038; nursing: 3200 CNY vs. 4100 CNY, P = 0.02). Conclusion: Implementing the clinical pathway for hepatic CE surgery is feasible and safe. The clinical pathway achieved significant reduction of hospital stay without compromising postoperative morbidity. Costs of medication and nursing are significantly reduced. The clinical pathway program is valid and propagable to a certain extent, especially in remote, poor-resourced medical centers in endemic areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Protein delivery with cell-penetrating peptide is opening up the possibility of using targets inside cells for therapeutic or biological applications; however, cell-penetrating peptide-mediated protein delivery commonly suffers from ineffective endosomal escape and low tolerance in serum, thereby limiting in vivo efficacy. Here, we present an intracellular protein delivery system consisting of four modules in series: cell-penetrating peptide, pH-dependent membrane active peptide, endosome-specific protease sites and a leucine zipper. This system exhibits enhanced delivery efficiency and serum tolerance, depending on proteolytic cleavage-facilitated endosomal escape and leucine zipper-based dimerisation. Intravenous injection of protein phosphatase 1B fused with this system successfully suppresses the tumour necrosis factor-α-induced systemic inflammatory response and acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure in a mouse model. We believe that the strategy of using multifunctional chimaeric peptides is valuable for the development of cell-penetrating peptide-based protein delivery systems, and facilitate the development of biological macromolecular drugs for use against intracellular targets. Organic coatings are widely used for the corrosion protection of metals. Despite a wide range of work on the degradation of organic coatings, few studies have contributed to understand the influence of the fluid flow on the degradation of organic coatings. In this study, an epoxy coating is exposed to a vertical impingement flow of a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution with a variety of flow rates. The coating degradation is monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Equivalent circuit models are employed to interpret the EIS spectra. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to study the influence of fluid flow on the surface topology of the coating samples. We found that the coating's barrier property deteriorates more drastically when exposed to higher flow rates for impingement flow. Coating thickness and surface roughness are significantly affected by the fluid shear and the flow rate. It is concluded that the impingement flow substantially impacts the barrier properties of epoxy coatings owing to its influence on the electrochemical properties of the coating layers and the fluid shear it creates on the coating surface. Lipid shuttling between neurons and glia contributes to the development, function, and stress responses of the nervous system. To understand how a neuron acquires its lipid supply from specific lipoproteins and their receptors, we perform combined genetic, transcriptome, and biochemical analyses in the developing Drosophila larval brain. Here we report, the astrocyte-derived secreted lipocalin Glial Lazarillo (GLaz), a homolog of human Apolipoprotein D (APOD), and its neuronal receptor, the brain-specific short isoforms of Drosophila lipophorin receptor 1 (LpR1-short), cooperatively mediate neuron-glia lipid shuttling and support dendrite morphogenesis. The isoform specificity of LpR1 defines its distribution, binding partners, and ability to support proper dendrite growth and synaptic connectivity. By demonstrating physical and functional interactions between GLaz/APOD and LpR1, we elucidate molecular pathways mediating lipid trafficking in the fly brain, and provide in vivo evidence indicating isoform-specific expression of lipoprotein receptors as a key mechanism for regulating cell-type specific lipid recruitment. Lipophorin receptors (LpRs) regulate structural and functional development of neurons in Drosophila. Alveolar bone is the thickened ridge of jaw bone that supports teeth. It is subject to constant occlusal force and pathogens invasion, and is therefore under active bone remodeling and immunomodulation. Alveolar bone holds a distinct niche from long bone considering their different developmental origin and postnatal remodeling pattern. However, a systematic explanation of alveolar bone at single-cell level is still lacking. Here, we construct a single-cell atlas of mouse mandibular alveolar bone through single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). A more active immune microenvironment is identified in alveolar bone, with a higher proportion of mature immune cells than in long bone. Among all immune cell populations, the monocyte/macrophage subpopulation most actively interacts with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) subpopulation. Alveolar bone monocytes/macrophages express a higher level of Oncostatin M (Osm) compared to long bone, which promotes osteogenic differentiation and inhibits adipogenic differentiation of MSCs. In summary, our study reveals a unique immune microenvironment of alveolar bone, which may provide a more precise immune-modulatory target for therapeutic treatment of oral diseases.
