The deterioration of fiber properties during recycling processes, especially the loss of tensile strength, raises concerns that paper products made from recycled fibers might not satisfy quality requirements. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the deterioration of tensile strength and the damage in paper sheets made of recycled fibers using the theory of damage mechanics and machine learning methods. Experiments were carried out to recycle wood fibers and nonwood fibers four times, and the physicochemical properties of the handsheets made from these fibers were measured after each recycling. Water retention value and relative bonded area were selected as the features to estimate and predict tensile strength during recycling because they had strong correlations with tensile strength. This paper proposed a damage index to quantitatively express the severity of the damage in paper sheets based on the experimental investigation and the theory of damage mechanics. Thus, the deterioration of tensile strength could be estimated and predicted. To determine the damage index, a curve fitting model based on the hyperbolic theory of pulp properties was developed. The proposed quantitative expression of the damage index is: D = (Ds - h)²/a2 - (Dh - k)²/b2, where the coefficients were determined through the curve fitting model. This paper also developed a long short-term memory recurrent neural network model to determine the damage index according to the sequence of recycling. Both models were trained with the experimental data of water retention value and relative bonded area. The estimation and prediction by the curve fitting model were more accurate than those of the neural network model. The root mean square errors by the curve fitting model were 0.0278 for estimation, 0.1667 for prediction; and by the neural network model were 0.2445 for estimation, 0.2206 for prediction, respectively. With the acceleration of the global modern industrialisation process and the increasingly serious environmental problems, the development of low energy consumption, high efficiency electrochemical energy conversion equipment and separation system has become a research hotspot in the scientific and industrial circles. Traditional experimental and computational methods have low fault tolerance when studying two-dimensional materials, which requires a lot of time and research and development costs. Through the digitalisation of Civil Trials and the implementation of the Telematic Civil Process framework, the Italian Ministry of Justice has amassed a wealth of data covering all facets of modern Trials. While data availability has surged, the focus now lies in actively analysing this data to optimise Trials and curtail their duration. This paper, with a strong emphasis on its outcomes, delves into the analysis of data from the Court of Livorno. It seeks to pinpoint specific events within the Trial workflow that significantly extend Trial durations. Notably, Domain Experts have identified a set of events, intending to validate their pivotal role in recognising critical Trials. Leveraging Machine Learning techniques, the paper evaluates multiple binary classifiers to proactively identify potentially critical Trials, empowering Judges to mitigate future issues. Piezoelectric semiconductors (PSs) have widespread applications in semiconductor devices due to the coexistence of piezoelectricity and semiconducting properties. It is very important to conduct a theoretical analysis of PS structures. However, the present of nonlinearity in the partial differential equations (PDEs) that describe those multi-field coupling mechanical behaviors of PSs poses a significant mathematical challenge when studying these PS structures. In this paper, we present a novel approach based on machine learning for solving multi-field coupling problems in PS structures. A physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) is constructed for predicting the multi-field coupling behaviors of PS rods with extensional deformation. By utilizing the proposed PINNs, we evaluate the multi-field coupling responses of a ZnO rod under static and dynamic axial forces. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed PINNs exhibit high accuracy in solving both static and dynamic problems associated with PS structures. This paper highlights an innovative approach to address the environmental challenges associated with waste management and construction materials. The study presents a new technique for utilising treated sewage sludge in the production of eco-friendly geopolymer mortar. Sewage sludge is a byproduct generated from wastewater treatment plants that poses significant environmental issues due to its disposal problems. Geopolymer mortar, on the other hand, is a sustainable construction material that can be produced by activating industrial waste materials, such as fly ash, using alkaline activators. By integrating machine learning algorithms and data visualisation techniques, this study optimises the mix parameters of geopolymer mortar while simultaneously reducing the negative impact of sewage sludge disposal. The experimental results show that sewage sludge ash can replace fly ash and fine aggregate in 1:3 geopolymer mortar by up to 30% and 20%, respectively, without any toxic or heavy metal residues. The compressive and flexural strength of the sludge-based mortar were comparable to ordinary geopolymer mortar, while water absorption and drying shrinkage were similar to control specimens. This research offers a unique solution to promote sustainability in waste management and construction industry by utilising waste materials, including fly ash and treated sewage sludge, for geopolymer production. In the third industrial revolution (IR), mechatronics engineering has emerged, which is the merger of mechanical and electronics engineering along with information technology to an extent. In the current industrial revolution (fourth), the amalgamation of mechanical with Artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to simulate human behaviour in machines. In the earlier decades, the application of AI in mechanical engineering has expedited and the increased volume of related research papers is a proof of this fact. The broad domain of mechanical engineering has a lot of potential for machine learning applications in order to detect errors, minimise rejection, improve product quality, optimise a system, and so on, as it has not been intensely explored although. This article’s goal is to give a structured evaluation of works that employ vision systems and to attract researchers to analyse its potential integration with machine learning (ML) techniques from the industry 4.0 viewpoint. Current trends and research gaps in the area of manufacturing in collaboration with ML are also discussed at appropriate places. A general procedure to carry out research in the field of mechanical engineering is also presented. The results of various studies highlighted in this paper confirm that the implementation of AI in ME has provided an optimum solution to many mechanical problems that improved product quality and minimised the associated cost. Natural streamflow data is required in many hydrological applications. However, many basins are located in data-scarce regions or are impacted by human construction and activities. In this paper, we explore three machine learning algorithms, namely artificial neural networks, random forest and light gradient boosting machine, to simultaneously estimate all the parameters of the coupled modèle du Génie Rural à 4 paramètres Journaliers (GR4J) and snow accounting routine called CemaNeige model. A database of 675 basins in the USA and Quebec is used to train and test ensembles. After using the estimated parameters in GR4J, the resulting naturalized streamflow series are compared with those obtained by the established drainage area ratio and spatial proximity transfer methods in 11 test basins. The results indicate that the machine learning algorithms outperform the drainage area ratio and spatial proximity transfer methods. Finite-sum problems appear as the sample average approximation of a stochastic optimization problem and often arise in machine learning applications with large scale data sets. A very popular approach to face finite-sum problems is the stochastic gradient method. It is well known that a proper strategy to select the hyperparameters of this method (i.e. the set of a-priori selected parameters) and, in particular, the learning rate, is needed to guarantee convergence properties and good practical performance. In this paper, we analyse standard and line search based updating rules to fix the learning rate sequence, also in relation to the size of the mini batch chosen to compute the current stochastic gradient. An extensive numerical experimentation is carried out in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the discussed strategies for convex and non-convex finite-sum test problems, highlighting that the line search based methods avoid expensive initial setting of the hyperparameters. This paper presents a novel approach for enhancing long-term runoff simulations through the integration of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) with four machine learning (ML) models: ensemble, support vector machine (SVM), convolutional neural networks (CNN), and artificial neural networks with backpropagation (ANN-BP). The proposed methodology uses EMD to decompose precipitation and temperature time-series into intrinsic mode functions, thereby revealing underlying data patterns. Subsequently, these components are incorporated into the ML models to simulate the runoff time-series. The effectiveness of the hybrid models is evaluated using streamflow runoff data obtained from the Grand, Winnipeg, and Moosonee Rivers in Ontario, Canada. Four widely used performance indices, namely, correlation coefficient, root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute relative error, and Nash--Sutcliffe efficiency, are employed to assess the models' performance. The results demonstrate that the hybrid EMD-ML models exhibit significantly superior performance compared with the standalone ML methods. During the validation phase, the EMD-Ensemble, EMD-SVM, EMD-CNN, and EMD-ANN-BP models exhibit notable reductions in the RMSEs of monthly streamflow estimates for the Grand River, amounting to 11%, 22%, 8%, and 33%, respectively, compared with their non-EMD counterparts. Additionally, these hybrid models exhibit improved RMSEs for yearly simulations in the Winnipeg River, with reductions of 54%, 0.08%, 6%, and 4.5% respectively. To further enhance the accuracy of monthly and yearly streamflow estimates, an SVM-recursive feature elimination technique is employed to select a more appropriate EMD dataset in all study cases. This research underscores the potential of integrating EMD with ML models to enhance long-term runoff simulations. The outcomes highlight the superior performance of the hybrid EMD-ML models, demonstrating their ability in generating lower biases than the standalone ML methods. Epilepsy is one of the dreaded conditions that had taken billions of people under its cloud worldwide. Detecting the seizure at the correct time in an individual is something that medical practitioners focus in order to help people save their lives. Analysis of the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal from the scalp area of the human brain can help in detecting the seizure beforehand. This paper presents a novel classification technique to classify EEG brain signals for epilepsy identification based on Discrete Wavelet Transform and Moth Flame Optimization-based Extreme Learning Machine (DM-ELM). ELM is a very popular machine learning method based on Neural Networks (NN) where the model is trained rigorously to get the minimized error rate and maximized accuracy. Aiming at the problem of fault detection in data collection in wireless sensor networks, this paper combines evolutionary computing and machine learning to propose a productive technical solution. We choose the classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) and improve it, including the introduction of a biological population model to control the population size, and the addition of a parallel mechanism for further tuning. The proposed RS-PPSO algorithm was successfully used to optimize the initial weights and biases of back propagation neural network (BPNN), shortening the training time and raising the prediction accuracy. This paper presents the development of hybrid machine learning models to forecast the natural flows of water bodies. Five models were considered under the analysis: extreme gradient boosting (XGB), extreme learning machine (ELM), support vector regression (SVR), elastic net linear model (EN), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The grey wolf optimization algorithm (GWO) optimized all of the models' internal parameters. A feature selection approach was embedded in the hybrid model to reduce the number of input variables. The hybrid model performed the forecasts considering one, three, five, and seven days ahead on data collected from Cahora Bassa dam, Mozambique. In the experiments conducted in this paper, XGB outperformed EN, ELM, MARS, and SVR, presenting lower prediction error and uncertainty. Machine learning specific scholarly full-text documents contain a number of result-figures expressing valuable data, including experimental results, evaluations, and cross-model comparisons. The scholarly search system often overlooks this vital information while indexing important terms using conventional text-based content extraction approaches. In this paper, we propose creating semantically enriched document summaries by extracting meaningful data from the results-figures specific to the evaluation metric of the area under the curve (AUC) and their associated captions from full-text documents. At first, classify the extracted figures and analyze them by parsing the figure text, legends, and data plots - using a convolutional neural network classification model with a pre-trained ResNet-50 on 1.2 million Images from ImageNet. Next, we extract information from the result figures specific to AUC by approximating the region under the function's graph as a trapezoid and calculating its area, i.e., the trapezoidal rule. Using over 12,000 figures extracted from 1000 scholarly documents, we show that figure specialized summaries contain more enriched terms about figure semantics. Furthermore, we empirically show that the trapezoidal rule can calculate the area under the curve by dividing the curve into multiple intervals. Finally, we measure the quality of specialized summaries using ROUGE, Edit distance, and Jaccard Similarity metrics. Overall, we observed that figure specialized summaries are more comprehensive and semantically enriched. The applications of our research are enormous, including improved document searching, figure searching, and figure focused plagiarism. The demand for skilled labor has increased dramatically in the current knowledge-based economy, which is characterized by the growing intensity in labor market competition between firms. Therefore, it would be of special interest to identify future labor market competitors. At present, with the vast amount of textual data, the existing study focuses on constructing the human capital overlap and product overlap metrics with the text data as predictors to predict the labor market competition in the United States. Based on these metrics, this paper experiments with machine learning methods to predict Chinese labor market competition with Chinese text data. Furthermore, sentiment analysis is becoming popular and it has been used in a wide variety of fields. However, due to lack of data, there are few existing studies using sentiment analysis approach of firms' online reviews. In response to this research gap, this paper constructs the sentiment analysis metric by mining the emotional content expressed in the firms' online reviews on Maimai's platform. The results show that our proposed metrics have superior predictive power over conventional measures and highlight the predictive utility of proposed sentiment analysis metric. The sudden outbreak of the novel Coronavirus (nCoV-19, COVID-19) and its rampant spread led to a significant number of people being infected worldwide and disrupted several businesses. With most of the countries imposing serious lockdowns due to the increasing number of fatalities, the social lives of millions of people were affected. Although the lockdown led to an increase in network activities, online shopping, and social network usage, it also raised questions On the mental wellness of society. Interestingly, excessive usage of social networks also witnessed humor traveling across the Internet in the form of Internet Memes during the lockdown period. Humor is known to affect our well-being, decision-making, and psychological systems. In this paper, we have analyzed the Internet Meme activity in Social Networks during the COVID-19 Lockdown period. As humor is known to relieve individuals from psychological stress, it is necessary to understand how human beings adopted Internet Memes for coping up with the lockdown stress and stress-relieving mechanism during the lockdown period. In this paper, we have considered thirty popular memes and the increase in the number of their captions within the period (September 2017 to August 2020). An increase in Internet Meme activity since the lockdown period (March 2020) depicts an increase in online social behavior. We analyze the internet meme activity in social networks during the COVID-19 lockdown period using random forest, multi-layer perceptron, and instance-based learning algorithms followed by data visualization using line graph and Heat Map (8 & 15 clustered). We also compared the performance of the models using evaluation parameters like mean absolute error, root-mean-squared error & Kappa statistics and observed that random forest and instance-based learning algorithms perform better than multi-layer perceptrons. The result indicates that random forest and instance-based learning classifiers are having near perfect classification tendencies whereas multi-layer perceptrons showed around 97% classification accuracy. In this paper, we present automatic, deep-learning methods for pipeline detection in underwater environments. Seafloor pipelines are critical infrastructure for oil and gas transport. The inspection of those pipelines is required to verify their integrity and determine the need for maintenance. Underwater conditions present a harsh environment that is challenging for image recognition due to light refraction and absorption, poor visibility, scattering, and attenuation, often causing poor image quality. Modern machine-learning object detectors utilize Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), requiring a training dataset of sufficient quality. In the paper, six different deep-learning CNN detectors for underwater object detection were trained and tested: five are based on the You Only Look Once (YOLO) architectures (YOLOv4, YOLOv4-Tiny, CSP-YOLOv4, YOLOv4@Resnet, YOLOv4@Den seNet), and one on the Faster Region-based CNN (RCNN) architecture. The models' performances were evaluated in terms of detection accuracy, mean average precision (mAP), and processing speed measured with the Frames Per Second (FPS) on a custom dataset containing underwater pipeline images. In the study, the YOLOv4 outperformed other models for underwater pipeline object detection resulting in an mAP of 94.21% with the ability to detect objects in real-time. Deep Learning (DL) is a type of machine learning used to model big data to extract complex relationship as it has the advantage of automatic feature extraction. This paper presents a review on DL showing all its network topologies along with their advantages, limitations, and applications. The most popular Deep Neural Network (DNN) is called a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), the review found that the most important issue is designing better CNN topology, which needs to be addressed to improve CNN performance further. This paper addresses this problem by proposing a novel nature inspired hybrid algorithm that combines the Bees Algorithm (BA), which is known to mimic the behavior of honey bees, with Bayesian Optimization (BO) in order to increase the overall performance of CNN, which is referred to as BA-BO-CNN. Applying the hybrid algorithm on Cifar10DataDir benchmark image data yielded an increase in the validation accuracy from 80.72% to 82.22%, while applying it on digits datasets showed the same accuracy as the existing original CNN and BO-CNN, but with an improvement in the computational time by 3 min and 12 s reduction, and finally applying it on concrete cracks images produced almost similar results to existing algorithms. Due to the completely open-source nature of Android, the exploitable vulnerability of malware attacks is increasing. To stay ahead of other similar review work attempting to deal with the serious security problem of the Android environment, this work not only summarizes the approaches in the malware classification phase but also lays emphasis on the Android feature selection algorithm and presents some areas neglected in previous works in the field of Android malware detection, like limitations and commonly applied datasets in machine learning- based models. In this paper, the Android OS environment, feature selection, classification models, and confronted challenges of machine learning detection are described in detail. Based on the brief introduction to Android background knowledge, feature selection methods are elaborated from key perspectives as feature extraction, raw data preprocessing, valid feature subsets selection, and machine learning-based selection models. This paper aims to fill in the missing time series of hourly surface water levels of some stations installed along the River Seine, using the long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm. In our study, only the water level data from the same station, containing many missing parts, were used as input and output variables, in contrast to other works where several features are available to take advantage of e.g. other station data/physical variables. A sensitive analysis is presented on both the network properties and how the input and output data are reentered to better determine the appropriate strategy. Numerous scenarios are presented, each an updated version of the previous one. Ultimately, the final version of the model can impute missing values of up to one year of hourly data with great flexibility (one-year Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE) = 0.14 m) regardless of the location of the missing gaps in the series or their size. This paper aimed to estimate the reference evapotranspiration (ET0) due to some limitations of the Food and Agriculture Organization-56 Penman-Monteith (FAO 56-PM) approach by using five alternative machine learning models. The study makes an important contribution to the ET0 estimation success for of the ET0 of 12 stations with variable climate characteristics in the Central Anatolian Region (CAR). The performances of the models were compared with the coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) metrics that are frequently cited in the literature, and also with the performance index (PI). Long short-term memory (LSTM), artificial neural networks (ANN), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) models provided the best performance in eight, three, and one stations, respectively. Geoinformatic Tupu, or Geoinformatic graph spectrum, is a theoretical as well as a technical framework for generalizing geographic knowledge and solving real world problems. Geoinformatic Tupu is a promising platform for capitalizing on the technical advances of Geographic Information Systems, and to integrate the Chinese traditional way of thinking with modern information technology. It has been one of the major research topics in the Chinese GIScience community in recent decades, with an evolving epistemological development. A core objective of Geoinformatic Tupu is to recover and represent geographic principles with the Tupu approach, which is adopted in this paper to formulate the First Law of Geography (FLG) [i.e. the law of spatial autocorrelation] as the Moran Spectrum – a combination of sequential diagrams, graphs, and numeric components. Using the Moran Spectrum as a conduit, we present the theory of Moran Eigenvector Spatial Filtering (MESF), a distinct branch of spatial statistics that has demonstrable advantages in statistical modelling and machine learning, but has yet to be widely disseminated due to its conceptual and computational complexity. The application of three-dimensional (3D) printing/Additive Manufacturing (AM) for developing multi-functional smart/intelligent composite materials is a highly promising area of engineering research. However, there is often no reliable means for predicting and modelling the material performance, and the wide-scale industrial adoption of AM is limited due to factors such as design barriers, limited materials library, processing defects and inconsistency in product quality. A comprehensive framework considering the generalised applicability of ML algorithms at sub-sequent stages of the AM process from the initial design to the post-processing stages in the literature is lacking. In this paper, the integration of various ML applications at various subprocesses is discussed, including pre-processing design stage, parameter optimisation, anomaly detection, in-situ monitoring, and the final post-processing stages. Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionised the manufacturing world due to its unique advantages, such as the ability to create complex geometries, work with dissimilar metallic materials, eliminate the need for molds or fixed tooling, and provide economic benefits. However, due to the high complexity and dynamics of AM processes, AM parts are prone to various defects that may affect their mechanical properties and safety. Therefore, the as-built quality cannot meet some strict functional requirements in nuclear, energy and aerospace applications. Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques have proven to be very effective in inspecting damage, aiding in process optimisation and quality control, which can contribute to enhancing the mechanical properties of AM parts. Ultrasound-assisted directed energy deposition (UADED) is a promising technology for improving the properties of printed parts. However, process monitoring during UADED remains a challenge as ultrasound obscures the physical characteristics of DED. Here, the physical phenomena during UADED are captured using in-situ imaging and an unsupervised learning with auto-encoding is proposed to reconstruct images of the melt pool and analyse the features of spatter and plume to achieve the forming quality monitoring. This method enables effectively identifying the dynamic relationship in melt pool-spatter-plume, and the average recognition accuracy for reconstructed images reaches 94.52% during fully connected auto-encoders. Based on recognition results, the spatters during UADED are more intense, but the plume phenomenon is weakened compared to DED. The reason is that the flow mode was changed into reciprocal flow due to ultrasound. Subsequently, experiments indicated the method possessed high accuracy and robustness. In additive manufacturing of metals, numerous techniques have been employed to sense print defects. Among these, acoustic-based sensing has the advantage of low cost and shows the most potential to identify both external and internal defects as an in-situ monitoring system. Using acoustic signals, researchers have broadly investigated non-machine learning and machine learning-based approaches to identify defects like balling, micro defects, lack of fusion pores, keyhole pores, cracks, and porosity. While most of these works have shown promising results for laser-based AM systems, few have explored how acoustic signals can be used effectively for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) defect detection. This paper proposes a methodology to construct machine learning (ML)-based models on identifying geometrically defective bead segments using acoustic signals during the WAAM process. Geometrically defective bead segment or geometric defect is a defect that causes voids in the final printed part due to incomplete fusion between two non-uniform overlapping bead segments. Such a defect is currently not explored in the literature. The proposed methodology uses a novel dataset labeling approach to identify good and bad bead segments based on an optimal threshold of the range of mean curvature. Furthermore, the methodology targets defective bead segments based on acoustic feature inputs like Principal Components (PC) or Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC). To understand the resulting performance of the defect identification models constructed based on the proposed methodology, experiments are performed and tested on a variety of ML models (KNN, SVM, RF, NN, and CNN) based on the Inconel 718 material. The results show that the combinatorics of two acoustic input features and five ML models can be able to identify geometrically defective segments accurately with F1 score that ranges from 80% to 85%. In recent days, COVID-19 pandemic has affected several people's lives globally and necessitates a massive number of screening tests to detect the existence of the coronavirus. At the same time, the rise of deep learning (DL) concepts helps to effectively develop a COVID-19 diagnosis model to attain maximum detection rate with minimum computation time. This paper presents a new Residual Network (ResNet) based Class Attention Layer with Bidirectional LSTM called RCAL-BiLSTM for COVID-19 Diagnosis. The proposed RCAL-BiLSTM model involves a series of processes namely bilateral filtering (BF) based preprocessing, RCAL-BiLSTM based feature extraction, and softmax (SM) based classification. Once the BF technique produces the preprocessed image, RCAL-BiLSTM based feature extraction process takes place using three modules, namely ResNet based feature extraction, CAL, and Bi-LSTM modules. Finally, the SM layer is applied to categorize the feature vectors into corresponding feature maps. The experimental validation of the presented RCAL-BiLSTM model is tested against Chest-X-Ray dataset and the results are determined under several aspects. The experimental outcome pointed out the superior nature of the RCAL-BiLSTM model by attaining maximum sensitivity of 93.28%, specificity of 94.61%, precision of 94.90%, accuracy of 94.88%, F-score of 93.10% and kappa value of 91.40%. Network (graph) data analysis is a popular research topic in statistics and machine learning. In application, one is frequently confronted with graph two-sample hypothesis testing where the goal is to test the difference between two graph populations. Several statistical tests have been devised for this purpose in the context of binary graphs. However, many of the practical networks are weighted and existing procedures cannot be directly applied to weighted graphs. In this paper, we study the weighted graph two-sample hypothesis testing problem and propose a practical test statistic. We prove that the proposed test statistic converges in distribution to the standard normal distribution under the null hypothesis and analyze its power theoretically. The simulation study shows that the proposed test has satisfactory performance and it substantially outperforms the existing counterpart in the binary graph case. In the present paper, we propose a new approach for monthly streamflow prediction based on the extreme learning machine (ELM) and the metaheuristic bat algorithm (Bat-ELM). The performance of the Bat-ELM was compared to that of ELM, support vector regression (SVR), Gaussian process regression (GPR), multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN), and generalized regression neural network (GRNN). The proposed models were applied using data from three hydrometric stations located in the Cheliff Basin, Algeria. The results showed that the Bat-ELM was more satisfactory than the standalone models. The Bat-ELM achieved the highest numerical performance with correlation coefficient and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency ranging from 0.927 to 0.973 and from 0.846 to 0.944, respectively, much higher than the respective values obtained using the MLPNN, GRNN, SVR, GPR and ELM approaches. Natural plant fiber-reinforced composite (NFC) has become a preferred component in modern-day civil building construction materials because it offers, among others, an environment-friendly solution without compromising stringent engineering requirements. Such green-based composites have exhibited noteworthy level of competitiveness comparable to that of the existing commercially available nongreen materials. Furthermore, NFC can also be tailored to align with the desired functional attributes. However, lack of comprehensive guidelines and recommended applications of suitable methods to assess composite failure of such novel NFC have raised significant concerns. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the latest developments in nondestructive testing (NDT) that can be applied to investigate into NFC failures. The study further explores alternative nondestructive testing methods and technologies exhibiting potential use in plant fiber composites studies, hence paving the way to future investigation trends. The ship hull form optimization using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is increasingly employed in the early design of a ship, as an optimal ship hull form can obtain good hydrodynamics. However, it is time-consuming due to its many CFD simulations for the optimization. This paper presents a ship hull form optimization loop using the surrogate model, deep belief network (DBN), to reduce the wave-making resistance of the Wigley ship. The prediction performance of the wave-making resistance of the Wigley ship using the DBN method is discussed and compared with the traditional surrogate models found in this study. The results show that the resistance obtained using the deep belief network algorithm is superior to that obtained using the typical surrogate models. Then, a ship hull form optimization framework is built by integrating the Free From Deformation, non-linear programming by quadratic Lagrangian and deep belief network algorithms. The optimization results show that the deep belief network-based ship hull form optimization loop can be used to optimize the Wigley ship. Wind energy has grown significantly over the last decade. With this, various improvements in the design of the wind turbine are geared towards increasing the reliability of several components. Wind turbulence has a huge effect on the fatigue loading of wind turbines considered in the design. Several monitoring methodologies, such as turbulence intensity analysis, are used to identify wind turbulence. In this paper, a method based on machine learning techniques and data from Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems is described. Five machine learning models are generated and compared in this study with the use of the operational data from the SCADA of wind turbines in a single wind farm. Results showed that the model based on Linear Regression in terms of a quadratic hyperparameter has lesser errors compared to the other models that were generated. Each parameter used in the creation of the model affects its performance. Observations in the nacelle system also showed higher errors due to the relationship between rotor speed and the blade angle. The rotor performance is mostly influenced by wind turbulence as the variation in wind speeds and rotational speeds have a certain correlation. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the use of SCADA data in generating turbulence models provides key insights into the relation of the turbulence intensity to the various components. Given a tweet, a machine learning model when after undertaking the training, development and testing phase is able to predict where the author of the tweet is situated. Our notion is that a user's tweet may consist of certain location-specific content which can indicatively consist of certain names or phrases related to the geographic location of the user. The primary purpose of the research was to identify a suitable algorithm to perform geographic location prediction accurately based on the Twitter tweets dataset. Geolocation prediction of Twitter users can be immensely helpful for demographic analysis, targeted advertising, location-based recommendation paving the way to enhanced user experience, advertising, location prediction during a time of crisis or disaster, and more. Knowing the location of users can also be helpful in finding employment as it would help determine the accessibility of certain users to their potential employees. Moreover, such a model would also help personalize someone's newsfeed and tweets with greater accuracy helping users find what they really need. In today's world, it can be observed that increasing amounts of data would result in a more precise location estimation, giving users belief in the soundness and continued refinement of location prediction using the user tweets data. Accurate predictions of sea surface temperature (SST) are crucial due to the significant impact of SST on the global ocean-atmospheric system and its potential to trigger extreme weather events. Many existing machine-learning-based SST predictions adapt the traditional iterative point-wise prediction mechanism, whose predicting horizons and accuracy are limited owing to the high sensitivity to cumulative errors during iterative predictions. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel granulation-based long short-term memory (LSTM)-random forest (RF) combination model that can fully capture the feature dependencies involved in the fluctuation of SST sequences, reduce the cumulative error in the iteration process, and extend the prediction horizons, which includes two sub-models (adaptive granulation model and hybrid prediction model). They can restack the one-dimensional SST time-series into multidimensional feature variables, and achieve a strong forecasting ability. The analysis shows that the proposed model can achieve more accurate prediction-hours in nearly all prediction ranges from 1 to 125 h. The average prediction error of the proposed model in 25–125 h is 0.07 K, similar to that (0.067 K) in the first 24 h, which exhibits a high generalization performance and robustness and isthus a promising platform for the medium- and long-term forecasting of hourly SSTs. Deep learning algorithms show good prospects for remote sensing flood monitoring. They mostly rely on huge amounts of labeled data. However, there is a lack of available labeled data in actual needs. In this paper, we propose a high-resolution multi-source remote sensing dataset for flood area extraction: GF-FloodNet. GF-FloodNet contains 13388 samples from Gaofen-3 (GF-3) and Gaofen-2 (GF-2) images. We use a multi-level sample selection and interactive annotation strategy based on active learning to construct it. Compare with other flood-related datasets, GF-FloodNet not only has a spatial resolution of up to 1.5 m and provides pixel-level labels, but also consists of multi-source remote sensing data. We thoroughly validate and evaluate the dataset using several deep learning models, including quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, and validation on large-scale remote sensing data in real scenes. Experimental results reveal that GF-FloodNet has significant advantages by multi-source data. It can support different deep learning models for training to extract flood areas. Previous studies have utilized regression models to investigate the impact of environmental factors on physical activity. However, such approaches are inadequate for data-driven analysis seeking to identify robust associations from the intricate and multi-variable interactions between physical activity and environmental factors. With the emergence of the concept of the exposome, which encompasses the totality of exposures, this paper explores machine learning models for predicting the percentage of physical inactivity in U.S. counties, while considering 28 social-, economic-, and physical-environmental factors. The aim of this study is to address the research gap and gain insight into the complex associations between environmental exposures and physical activity. Five machine learning models were tested, and the performances were compared to select the best classifier for further investigation. This study used data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The mean population of all counties was 102,841, and the mean percentage of population below 18 years was 22.3%. The partial dependence plot analysis indicated that only one feature – bachelor's degree – exhibited a close-to-linear relationship with physical inactivity. Top-of-atmosphere (TOA) outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), a key component of the Earth's energy budget, serves as a diagnostic of the Earth's climate system response to incoming solar radiation. However, existing products are typically estimated using broadband sensors with coarse spatial resolutions. This paper presents a machine learning method to estimate TOA OLR by directly linking Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) TOA radiances with TOA OLR determined by Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and other information, such as the viewing geometry, land surface temperature and cloud top temperature determined by Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2). Models are built separately under clear- and cloudy-sky conditions using a gradient boosting regression tree. Independent test results show that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the clear-sky and cloudy-sky models for estimating instantaneous values are 4.1 and 7.8 W/m2, respectively. Real-time conversion ratios derived from CERES daily and hourly OLR data are used to convert the instantaneous MODIS OLR to daily results. Inter-comparisons of the daily results show that the RMSE of the estimated MODIS OLR is 8.9 W/m2 in East Asia. To remove vegetation bias (VB) from the global DEMs (GDEMs), an artificial neural network (ANN)-based method with the consideration of elevation spatial autocorrelation is developed in this paper. Three study sites with different forest types (evergreen, mixed evergreen-deciduous, and deciduous) are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed model on three popular 30-m GDEMs, including SRTM1, AW3D30, and COPDEM30. Taking LiDAR DTM as the ground truth, the accuracy of the GDEMs before and after VB correction is assessed, as well as two existing GDEMs including MERIT and FABDEM. Results show that all the original GDEMs significantly overestimate the LiDAR DTM in the three forest types, with the largest biases of 21.5 m for SRTM1, 26.3 m for AW3D30, and 27.18 m for COPDEM30. Taking data randomly sampled from the corrected area as the training points, the proposed model reduces the mean errors (root mean square errors) of the three GDEMs by 98.8%−99.9% (55.1%−75.8%) in the three forests. When training data have the same forest type as the corrected GDEM but under different local situations, the proposed model lowers the GDEM errors by at least 76.9% (44.1%). Seasonal snow cover is a key component of the global climate and hydrological system, it has drawn considerable attention under global warming conditions. Although several passive microwave (PMW) snow depth (SD) products have been developed since the 1970s, they inherit noticeable errors and uncertainties when representing spatial distributions and temporal changes of SD, especially in complex mountainous regions. In this paper, we developed a fine-resolution SD retrieval model (FSDM) using machine learning to improve SD estimation quality for Northeast China and produced a long-term, fine-resolution, daily SD dataset. The accuracies of the FSDM dataset were evaluated against in-situ SD data along with existing SD products. The results showed the FSDM dataset provided satisfactory inversion accuracy in spatiotemporal evaluation, with the root-mean-square error (RMSE), bias, and correlation coefficient (R) of 7.10 cm, −0.13 cm, and 0.60. Additionally, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of SD in Northeast China and found that snow cover was mainly distributed in the Greater Khingan Range, Lesser Khingan Mountains, and Changbai Mountain regions. Modern earth observation sensors have revolutionized the remote sensing community by improving remote sensing image quality. However, Pixel-based image analysis methods have challenges in handling very high-resolution (VHR) imagery. Geographic Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) yielded promising results, but it is not inflexible in capturing domain experts' expressions, therefore geographic information system professionals shifted to ontologies for remote sensing science. This paper advocates for the adoption of knowledge representation using ontologies in remote sensing. To this end, a survey of GEOBIA studies for image analysis and classification is presented, and the limitations of existing methods in reaching the remote sensing expert-level expectation are clarified. New GEOBIA development techniques as well as opportunities for improving GEOBIA models have been looked into. Recent studies that adopted ontologies in forest image classification are analyzed and recommendations for the remote sensing science community are provided, to highlight the advantages of ontologies in interpreting satellite images.
