Since 2010, the Chinese government has developed several batches of low-carbon pilot provinces and cities continuously. And in the backdrop of carbon peak and carbon neutralisation recently, the carbon emission reduction policies and achievements of China have attracted more and more worldwide attention. In the field of human health, this paper investigates whether the Low-carbon Province Pilot Policy of China has positive effects on residents' health based on the micro data of China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) from 2010 to 2016. Using the time-varying difference-in-difference model to solve the endogeneity problem commonly faced in the literature, we find that Low-carbon Province Pilot Policy has a positive impact on public health through air quality improvement and the unemployment level alleviation mainly. And in urban areas, the policy effect is more obvious than that in rural regions. This paper expands the content of national low-carbon governance effects to residents' health further and contribute to China's low-carbon development. Specifically, it reminds us to focus on the dynamic adjustment and effective continuation of the policy, and also the all-round support for 'the disadvantaged' in environmental governance process. China confronts a challenging dilemma between environmental protection and economic development as it endeavors to achieve dual carbon goals. To discern a feasible developmental path, this paper designs a comprehensive index of the digital economy encompassing four dimensions: input, production, output, and consumption, conducts an empirical analysis to explore the relationship between the digital economy and carbon emissions by using a two-way fixed effect model with China's provincial data from 2013 to 2019, and suggests that the digital economy can significantly reduce carbon emissions and carbon intensity. Public low carbon awareness and green innovation are mechanisms that mediate the association between the digital economy and carbon emissions. The carbon reduction effect varies across dimensions of the digital economy, regions, and sources of carbon emissions. Under the new development pattern, green low-carbon and digital economy become two mainstream development directions in China. Against the background 'dual carbon' strategies, based on the data of China between 2010 and 2018 at the city level, The paper adopts dynamic spatial Durbin models to investigate the causal links causal between digital economy and carbon intensity by constructing different spatial weight matrices, and explore the influence of human capital with threshold model. Results show that：(1) Urban digital economy and carbon intensity show significant positive spatial correlation characteristics. The carbon reduction of digital economy has obvious spatial spillover effect under different spatial weight matrices. (2) Industrial structure upgrading, technological innovation and resource allocation optimization are effective channels through which digital economy contributes to carbon emission reduction. (3) A double-threshold effect of human capital is evident in the carbon reduction of digital economy. The findings offer new perspectives and empirical evidence for understanding the causality relation between the digital economy and carbon emission, and those conclusions have important policy implications for how to promote the digital economy development and thus achieve the 'double carbon goal'. To facilitate and balance regional economic development and to reduce carbon emissions, China has implemented a series of policies to promote the redistribution of industries and economic activities across regions since 2000. This paper employs a logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) to analyse the dynamic net effect on carbon emissions of Chinese policies promoting economic redistribution across sub-national regions, using a panel data of five sectors in 30 provinces during 1995–2017. The results of our analysis show that the redistribution of industry in particular, but also business and construction activities, leads to an increase in CO2 emissions, while the relocation of agriculture and transportation activities reduces emissions. We also find that the emission increase effect of the transfer of carbon intensive industries to new (host) regions is higher than the emission reduction effect induced by the agglomeration of clean industries in the original (home) regions. However, from 2014–2017, alongside the gradual industrial redistribution, China has also reduced aggregate CO2 emissions by 58.6 MT. In addition, the results show that population migration, which is due to redistribution of industry and other economic activity, has caused higher emission increases than emission reductions due to redistribution policies. We further calculate the marginal effect of industrial redistribution on CO2 emissions and draw out relevant policy implications. Key policy insights Industrial (and other economic activity) redistribution within a county can be not only an economic policy, but also an important policy instrument to mitigate CO2 emissions. This is the case in China. In the process of regional industrial redistribution, policymakers should aim to reduce the emission increase effect of transfer of carbon-intensive industries to host regions and to raise the emission reduction effect induced by an agglomeration of clean industries in home regions. Empirical evidence demonstrates that market-driven carbon trading scheme (ETS) is a crucial instrument for China to control environmental pollution. Based on the panel data of China's 283 prefecture-level cities from 2006 to 2017, this research investigated the transmission mechanism, direct and indirect effects of ETS on carbon emission intensity (CEI) using difference-in-differences (DID) model, propensity-score-matched difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) model at national, regional, and local levels (cities with different industrial characteristics). The results demonstrated the mediating effects of total energy consumption, energy consumption structure, and industrial structure upgrading in the incentive role of ETS on CEI reduction. Moreover, ETS directly and effectively reduced CEI at the national level, while the spatial heterogenous effects were identified at regional and local levels, which emphasises the necessity and importance of unified carbon trading market establishment and classified governance. Green finance is an effective means adopted by the Chinese government to reduce carbon emissions. Does the development of green finance in Chinese provinces reduce carbon emissions to a certain extent? This study selects panel data of various provinces and cities in China from 2003 to 2019. Based on the Hansen threshold regression model, an empirical analysis is conducted with economic growth and industrial structure as threshold variables to test the impact of green finance on carbon emissions. The results show that green finance increases the speed of carbon emission mitigation when PGDP is the threshold. Taking industrial structure as the threshold, the impact of green finance development on carbon emissions presents an inverted N shape. At the same time, it is found that green finance has become an important means to reduce carbon emissions in the eastern region, the impact of green finance on carbon emissions in the central region presents an inverted U shape, and the driving force of green finance on carbon emission reduction in the western region is weak. Furthermore, it is pointed out that improving the quality of green finance and enhancing the level of green finance empowered by science and technology are the keys to realizing sustainable green development. China's economy is faced with mounting pressure to reduce CO2 emissions. This study estimates the impact of green innovation and institutional quality on CO2 emissions, and examines the moderating effect of institutional quality. The results show that: (1) Green innovation significantly reduced CO2 emissions. Institutional quality has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between green innovation and CO2 emissions, such that when institutional quality is high, green innovation has a stronger reduction in CO2 emissions. (2) Green innovation significantly reduced CO2 emissions in the eastern and western regions. Moreover, as institutional quality improves, the reduction of CO2 emissions through green innovation increased in the western region. (3) Green innovation in 2013–2017 had a greater effect on CO2 emissions reduction than 2005–2012. Moreover, with the improvement of institutional quality, green innovation's reduction of CO2 emissions in 2005–2012 was weakened, whereas the reduction of CO2 emissions by green innovation increased in 2013–2017. The rise in carbon emissions has significantly aggravated issues related to climate change. In light of this background, there has been a strong focus on using financial methods to reduce carbon emissions. Based on panel data for China for the period 2003–2019, we examine the effects of green finance on carbon emissions and the moderating effects of environmental regulations. The results indicate that green finance development alleviates carbon emissions. Meanwhile, our findings on the effects of green finance policies suggest that the implementation of such policies will strengthen the carbon-emission reduction effects of green finance. Additionally, the impacts of green finance on carbon emissions are moderated by administration and public-oriented environmental regulations rather than market-oriented environmental regulations. As the biggest emitter of carbon emissions in the world, China should prioritise the consistent and steady development of green finance and facilitate the green finance legislation. The digital economy has become important in the world's major economies. Improving energy efficiency is the key to achieving stable and sustainable economic growth and carbon emissions reduction. However, the impact of the digital economy on energy efficiency remains unclear. Accordingly, this study examines the relationship between the digital economy and energy efficiency from the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) perspective. In doing so, this study confirms that the digital economy follows the EKC in energy utilization efficiency, and there is a U-shaped relationship between the digital economy and energy efficiency, although this relationship differs from one region to another. This study also discusses the moderating effects of environmental regulation and innovation capability in this U-shaped relationship, confirming that they have a moderating effect on this relationship, reducing the inflection point of the U-shaped relationship, and reducing the negative influence of the digital economy on the energy efficiency and enhancing the positive impact. This study can serve as a reference for policymakers and professionals in emerging economies, helping them achieve a win-win situation for economic development and reducing carbon emissions. China has announced its goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2060, which will have a profound impact on its energy and economic systems. During this process, the power sector will play a key role in helping the country on its road towards carbon neutrality. This study develops a multi-regional power dispatch and capacity expansion model to combine long-term capacity expansion with short-term power dispatch. The model is built to optimise the carbon-neutral transition pathway from the perspective of economics, focussing on power system stability and reliability under high penetrations of renewables. Using the case study of North China, the cost-effective methods for power system transitions under the targets of reaching peak emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 are discussed under different scenarios. We find that the future power supply system will rely heavily on renewable energy which will account for more than 89% of power generation. Inner Mongolia will produce more than 84% of power in the North China region. The inter-regional power transmission capacity will be five times higher than its current level. Policy choices will lead to different transition pathways as the early-stage installation decisions will have a lock-in effect on the following carbon emission reduction strategies and determine the importance of technologies adopted in achieving carbon neutrality.
