This editorial summarizes the papers in issue 17(4) (2022). The first paper combines input–output modelling with priority weighting to analyse supply-chain impacts of disasters. The second paper examines skill-based functional specialization of value chains in Brazil using interregional and international value-added measures. The third paper questions the common belief that agglomeration economies are the driving force behind cluster formation using an agent-based model. The fourth paper applies modern instrumental variables techniques to measure the impact of forced migration flows from Venezuela to Colombia on house prices. The fifth paper explores the impact of an ageing population on per capita labour income, consumption and wealth at the regional level using a multivariate spatial econometric model. The sixth paper examines the impact of neighbouring countries on migrants' aggregate decisions to remit based on an advanced spatial econometric origin–destination model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the effects of oil demand and supply shocks on emerging market economies in Latin America using a Bayesian vector autoregressive (VAR) model that combines zero and sign restrictions. Our results highlight the importance of separately identify the oil market shocks. The higher price of oil driven by increased global demand produces higher output growth in Brazil, Colombia, and Chile. The results are more persistent for Brazil and Colombia likely due to increased income from oil exports, as both economies are net oil exporters. The better times in the domestic economies result in lower uncertainty and appreciation of the exchange rate in all countries in the sample. Oil supply shocks and oil-specific demand shocks are not statistically significant for most variables. The paper examines the effects of subordinate financial integration on workers in peripheral countries. The objective is to link the financial, productive and social reproduction spheres, taking into account the centre-periphery dynamic in the global process of capital valorisation. In this sense, the main contribution is the proposition of an analytical framework on the subject, based on Marxist and post-Keynesian inspired literature. Considering the asymmetric international relations within the hierarchical monetary system, the dynamics of capital cycles and the external imbalances of peripheral economies, five transmission channels are proposed concerning: (i) the burden of wealth transfer, (ii) the rise in household indebtedness, (iii) the effects of exchange rate volatility on real wages, (iv) the increased pressure for fiscal discipline which contributes to labour and social security reforms, and (v) the regressive specialisation of the productive structure and its impacts on employment. The secondary contribution refers to the comparative analysis of the cases of subordinate financialisation of Brazil and Colombia. The results of this analysis reveal the relevance of the proposed channels in terms of the dynamics of workers' social reproduction in a contemporary context, particularly with regard to wages, employment, household indebtedness and labour and social security rights. Coffee is a global value chain that has been going through many transformations, seeking to transition to sustainability. In this paper, a technological innovation system from multi-level perspective institutional dimensions (macro, meso and micro) was adopted to analyze the coffee value chain in Brazil and in Colombia. Our conceptual contribution lies on the connection across institutional levels, to understand sustainability transition. Thirty interviews with stakeholders from both countries were conducted. Results indicate that macro-institutions have a relevant effect on coffee-producing properties (micro-level), and meso-institutions play a central role in differentiating the way in which agents adopted voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) in each country. Results also pointed out the importance of meso-institutions in the implementation of VSS at micro-level, in both countries, although in Colombia organizations at meso-level seem to be less supportive of adopting VSS than they are in Brazil. Civil society engagement around health care and population health improvement is an important driver towards Health for All. Research can improve the effectiveness of health activism by examining the resources, structures and strategies of civil society engagement. However, research to support such engagement faces epistemological and methodological challenges which call for specific research strategies. A four year multi-country study was undertaken by the People's Health Movement, a global network working for health for all. The research took place in six countries (Brazil, Colombia, DR Congo, India, Italy, South Africa) and globally, and was directed to understanding five domains of civil society engagement: movement building; campaigning and advocacy; capacity building; knowledge generation, access and use; and engaging with governance. The research plan and methods of data collection and analysis were tailored to address the objective of improving activist practice, while negotiating research challenges identified during the design phase. Results include insights into the practice of civil society engagement in relation to the five domains of activist practice, as well as experience gained in managing six methodological challenges which we describe as: making meaning, aligning research and action, managing power relations, valuing experiential knowledges, chaos and contingency, challenging preconceptions. Researching activism can produce useful insights into practice as well as support continuous improvement in the effectiveness of such activism. However, there are significant methodological challenges that can be addressed through appropriate strategies. Political leaders rely on narratives to make sense of crises, but the extent to which such narratives are used to (de)mobilize scientific evidence in policy responses has not been fully explored. Based on the analysis of public messages and communications of the presidents of Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, we discuss how they have narratively approached the Covid-19 crisis, particularly with respect to the degree of their reliance on scientific expertise. Building on debates on policy narratives, crisis management, and evidence-based policymaking, we argue that the narratives presidents devised had significant (and mostly negative) effects on the design of policy responses. Their narratives sidelined (Bolsonaro), leveraged (Duque), or limited (López-Obrador) the role of scientific expertise in policy responses. Thus, in contrast to previous literature, these narratives aligned more with the president's agendas and personal biases, than with the need to explain the crisis for their societies or to design appropriate policies. Customer's trust in vendors' reputation is a key factor that facilitates economic transactions in e-commerce platforms. Although the trust-sales relationship is assumed robust and consistent, its empirical evidence remains neglected for Latin American countries. This work aims to provide a data-driven comprehensive framework for extracting valuable knowledge from public data available in the leading Latin American e-commerce platform with commercial operations in 18 countries. Only Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela showed the highest trust indexes among all nations analyzed. The study of Precambrian tectonics is an intricate task, demanding a holistic approach to take an accurate view of geologic history. Here we attempt to set up the overview of an Orosirian-Statherian continental arc in the northwestern Amazon Craton, the Cauaburi Belt. Field relations, petrological, geochemical, and geochronological data of calc-alkaline metagranitoids, high-grade metasedimentary rocks, and peraluminous metasyenogranites yielded new interpretations about its tectonic evolution. The record of intense and episodic calc-alkaline magmatism between ca. 1805 and 1759 Ma, assign to the Cauaburi Complex, with field evidence of magma mixing and lodgement in a compressional tectonic regime, suggest a continental arc as the tectonic setting. During the magmatic lulls, deformation and metamorphism increase, culminating with the partial fusion of the high-grade metasedimentary rocks of the Taiuaçu-Cauera Complex. This succession composes the precursor paleobasin, presenting maximum and minimum depositional ages of 1819 and 1794 Ma, and was a relevant source for the calc-alkaline magmatism. The geochronological record of a low-volume production of peraluminous crustal rocks (Igarapé Tocandira Granite), with crystallization age at ca. 1791 Ma and metamorphic age at ca. 1771 Ma, also highlights the time and effect of the magmatic lulls. The Cauaburi Belt structural framework follows a general E-W to ENE-WSW trend, expressed in the Paleoproterozoic rocks as syn-magmatic and solid-state deformation fabrics. Assuming that Columbia Supercontinent nucleus assembled in the late Orosirian, we interpret that this coeval continental arc developed at its border and followed a north-south shortening direction, at current orientation. Here, a new species from Colombia A. (Lobidion) fedescobari sp. nov. is described based on a single male and two females. Additionally, the species Ateuchus (Lobidion) punctatissimus Génier (2010) is re-described based on new morphological characters. Among Ateuchus, Lobidion species share a unique character, namely the sixth ventrite bearing one or two posterior processes. Based on the above the subgenus Lobidion is re-described. The aim of this study was to model the determination of the amount of agricultural limestone necessary to correct acidification in acid sulfate soils (ASS). This study used 14 equations and the chemical variables of the soils including pH, soil organic matter (SOM), potential acidity (H+ Al), sum of bases (BS), potential acidity (T), base saturation (V) and exchangeable Al with KCl. The results indicated that in the studied, the lowest requirements for doses of limestone (DL) were described by the equations DL = 2.906((H+ Al) (45-V)/100)°80, DL = 0.08 + 1.22AlKCl, DL = 0.6T – BS, and DL = 1.5AlKCl, with mean values of 29.5, 30.5, 31.5 and 37.4 t ha−1. In addition, the models with the best correlation for determining the limestone requirements to obtain 80% of the maximum production of sorghum (dry matter) were DL = −1.43 + 0.9237 (SOM (6-pH)) and DL = −0.022 + 2.7425 ((H+ Al) (45-V)/100). Burnout is a highly prevalent globalized health issue that causes significant physical and psychological health problems. In Latin America research on this topic has increased in recent years, however there are no studies comparing results across countries, nor normative reference cut-offs. The present meta-analysis examines the intensity of burnout (emotional exhaustion, cynicism and personal accomplishment) in 58 adult nonclinical samples from 8 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela). We found low intensity of burnout but there are significant differences between countries in emotional exhaustion explained by occupation and language. Social and human service professionals (police officers, social workers, public administration staff) are more exhausted than health professionals (physicians, nurses) or teachers. The samples with Portuguese language score higher in emotional exhaustion than Spanish, supporting the theory of cultural relativism. Demographics (sex, age) and study variables (sample size, instrument), were not found significant to predict burnout. The effect size and confidence intervals found are proposed as a useful baseline for research and medical diagnosis of burnout in Latin American countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The app for the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (iSOPARC®) was developed to enhance System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities data collection and management. The study aim was to examine the usability and inter-rater reliability of iSOPARC®. Trained observers collected data in 16 park areas in two Latin America cities (Curitiba, Brazil; Bogotá, Colombia) using both the original System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (mechanical counter) and new iSOPARC® (electronic counter) methods. A total of 8,707 park users (3,958 females and 4,749 males) were observed. Reliabilities among observers were determined using the intraclass correlation coefficient and relative overall agreement (%) in three ways: (a) mechanical versus mechanical, (b) mechanical versus electronic, and (c) electronic versus electronic. When both used mechanical counters comparisons overall agreement was over 78% (intraclass correlation coefficient  = .982;p < .001) for variables in all analysis. When one used a mechanical counter and the other used electronic (iSOPARC®) comparisons overall agreement was higher for age (84%;p < .001) than for physical activity (83%;p < .001) variables and average intraclass correlation coefficient was .965. Using both used iSOPARC® comparisons overall agreement was 81% to physical activity and 83% to age group. Results suggest iSOPARC® can be used reliably for examining variables previously validated in System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
