This article investigates the operation of a microgrid system through a novel control scheme. The proposed microgrid system employs various autonomous generation systems, including photovoltaic, wind, a diesel engine, a fuel cell, an aqua electrolyzer, and a battery. A simulation model for this microgrid system was developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK (The MathWorks, Natick, Massachusetts, USA). A proportion-integral-derivative control scheme is employed, and the parameters of proportion-integral-derivative controllers for various controllable sources are tuned with a firefly algorithm. This is done using a new proposed weighted goal attainment method for achieving improved and fault-tolerant operation. The proposed control scheme shows better performance over the classical proportion-integral-derivative and bacterial foraging–proportion-integral-derivative controller in both transient and steady-state conditions. The firefly algorithm–proportion-integral-derivative controller also shows stronger robustness properties against system perturbations, disturbances, and faults than that with other controller structures. The robustness is a highly desirable property in such a scenario since many components of the microgrid may be switched on/off or may run at lower/higher power output at different time instants. For avoiding obstacles and joint physical constraints of robot manipulators, this paper proposes and investigates a novel obstacle avoidance scheme (termed the acceleration-level obstacle-avoidance scheme). The scheme is based on a new obstacle-avoidance criterion that is designed by using the gradient neural network approach for the first time. In addition, joint physical constraints such as joint-angle limits, joint-velocity limits and joint-acceleration limits are incorporated into such a scheme, which is further reformulated as a quadratic programming (QP). Two important ‘bridge’ theorems are established so that such a QP can be converted equivalently to a linear variational inequality and then equivalently to a piecewise-linear projection equation (PLPE). A numerical algorithm based on a PLPE is thus developed and applied for an online solution of the resultant QP. Four path-tracking tasks based on the PA10 robot in the presence of point and window-shaped obstacles demonstrate and verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the acceleration-level obstacle-avoidance scheme. Flight envelope protection algorithm is proposed to improve the safety of an aircraft. Flight envelope protection systems find the control inputs to prevent an aircraft from exceeding structure/aerodynamic limits and maximum control surface deflections. The future values of state variables are predicted using the current states and control inputs based on linearised aircraft model. To apply the envelope protection algorithm for the wide envelope of the aircraft, online linearisation is adopted. Finally, the flight envelope protection system is designed using adaptive neural network and least-squares method. A robot interacting with the environment requires that the end effector \hboxposition is tracked and that the forces of contact are kept below certain reference values. For instance, in a rehabilitation session using a robotic device, the contact forces are limited by the allowed strength of the human limbs and their complex-joints. In these cases, a control scheme which considers both position and force control is essential to avoid damage to either the end effector or the object interacting with the robot. This paper therefore develops a real-time force/position control scheme for a three-DOF parallel robot whose end effector holds a DOF one translation (1 T) and two rotations (2 R). The implemented hybrid force/position control considers, as a reference, the normal force on the mobile platform, which is measured by means of a load cell installed on the platform. The position control is designed to track the orientations of the robot either in joint or task space using a model-based control scheme with identified parameters. Moreover, the force control is based on a PD action. The control scheme is developed through simulations, before being applied to an actual parallel robot. The findings show that with the implemented controller, the actual robot accomplishes the reference values for the normal force on the mobile platform, while at the same time the platform accurately follows the required angular orientation. In this paper, we consider a control problem of a non-holonomic multi-agent system. We assume that agents and obstacles are in a circular shaped work area. We propose a novel potential-function-based control scheme that drives agents from the initial to the goal configuration while avoiding collision with other agents, obstacles, and the boundary of the work area. The control scheme enables agents to avoid being trapped at local minima by forcing them to exit from the regions that may contain local minima. A new proportional-derivative-type state feedback controller is proposed for congestion control of transmission control protocol (TCP) networks. An analytical TCP model is adopted. In the proposed control scheme, it is possible to efficiently control the TCP traffic using only the queue length at the router without the need to know the TCP window size which is not available locally. The results are presented in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequality. The proposed method is verified by simulation examples using NS software, and the effectiveness and superiority of our method over other control schemes, such as the proportional-integral, random early detection and generalised minimum variancemethods, are also shown. Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising technology to improve the utilisation of wireless spectrum resources. Spectrum sensing is the core functionality in CR networks (CRN). When there exist malicious users (MUs) in CRN and MUs start to attack the network after accumulating reputation to some extent, the performance is deteriorated. In this paper, a scheme is proposed by employing Orthogonalized Gnanadesikan–Kettenring (OGK) to mitigate the effect of MUs without the assistance of trusted nodes, and it can improve the robustness of CRN. In this paper, the overall formation stability of an unmanned multi-vehicle is mathematically presented under interconnection topologies. A novel definition of formation error is first given and followed by the proposed formation stability hypothesis. Based on this hypothesis, a unique extension–decomposition–aggregation scheme is then employed to support the stability analysis for the overall multi-vehicle formation under a mesh topology. It is proved that the overall formation control system consisting ofNnumber of nonlinear vehicles is not only asymptotically stable, but also exponentially stable in the sense of Lyapunov within a neighbourhood of the desired formation. This technique is shown to be applicable for a mesh topology but is equally applicable for other topologies. A simulation study of the formation manoeuvre of multiple Aerosonde UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), in 3-D space, is finally carried out verifying the achieved formation stability result. This paper proposes a model predictive control scheme for tracking a-priori unknown references varying in a wide range and analyses its performance. It is usual to assume that the reference eventually converges to a constant in which case convergence to zero of the tracking error can be established. In this paper, a novel fault detection and isolation (FDI) method for switching linear systems is developed. All input and output signals are assumed to be corrupted with measurement noises. In the proposed method, a ‘lifted’ linear model named as stochastic hybrid decoupling polynomial (SHDP) is introduced. The SHDP model governs the dynamics of the switching linear system with all different modes, and is independent of the switching sequence. The error-in-variable (EIV) representation of SHDP is derived, and is used for the fault residual generation and isolation following the well-adopted local approach. The proposed FDI method can detect and isolate the fault-induced abrupt changes in switching models’ parameters without estimating the switching modes. Furthermore, in this paper, the analytical expressions of the gradient vector and Hessian matrix are obtained based on the EIV SHDP formulation, so that they can be used to implement the online fault detection scheme. Stabilisation of simple mechanical systems in finite time with continuous state feedback is considered here. The dynamics are represented by generalised (local) coordinates. A general methodology to construct control Lyapunov functions that are Hölder continuous and that can be used to show finite-time stability of the feedback controlled system, is presented. This construction also gives the feedback control law, and results in the feedback system being Hölder continuous as well. Unlike Lipschitz continuous feedback control systems, the feedback control scheme given here converges to the desired equilibrium in finite time. Moreover, unlike discontinuous and hybrid control schemes, the feedback control law does not lead to chattering in the presence of measurement noise, does not excite unmodelled high-frequency dynamics, and can be implemented with actuators that can only deliver continuous control inputs. The advantages of continuous finite-time stabilisation over continuous asymptotic stabilisation of mechanical systems, has been described in some prior research on finite-time stabilisation of the double integrator. The finite-time stabilisation scheme given here generalises this prior research to multiple degree-of-freedom mechanical systems. Abstract—A new fault phase selection method for transmission lines is proposed in this article. First, fault phase selection factors are constructed based on the relationship between the fault current of each phase and the fault current difference of the other two phases at a relay point. By analyzing different characteristics of fault phase selection factors in the case of different fault types, fault phase selection criteria are proposed. Simulation results show that fast and accurate selection of the fault phase can be achieved within a period cycle after fault occurs. Also, it is verified that the method bears a high sensitivity to all types of faults and is immune to the impact of fault resistance, fault inception angle, fault location, load current, and high-voltage DC lines, which makes it relatively reliable. Even when a developing fault occurs, good selectivity is secure with this method. In this work, we present a fast and parallel finite volume scheme on unstructured meshes applied to complex fluid flow. The mathematical model is based on a three-dimensional compressible low Mach two-phase flows model, combined with a linearised ‘artificial pressure’ law. This hyperbolic system of conservation laws allows an explicit scheme, improved by a block-based adaptive mesh refinement scheme. Following a previous one-dimensional work, the useful numerical density of entropy production is used as mesh refinement criterion. Moreover, the computational time is preserved using a local time-stepping method. Molecular simulation could provide detailed description of fluid systems when compared to experimental techniques. They can also replace equations of state; however, molecular simulation usually costs considerable computational efforts. Several techniques have been developed to overcome such high computational costs. In this paper, two early rejection schemes, a conservative and a hybrid one, are introduced. In these two methods, undesired configurations generated by the Monte Carlo trials are rejected earlier than it would when using conventional algorithms. The methods are tested for structureless single-component Lennard–Jones particles in both canonical andNVT-Gibbs ensembles. The computational time reduction for both ensembles is observed at a wide range of thermodynamic conditions. Results show that computational time savings are directly proportional to the rejection rate of Monte Carlo trials. The proposed conservative scheme has shown to be successful in saving up to 40% of the computational time in the canonical ensemble and up to 30% in theNVT-Gibbs ensemble when compared to standard algorithms. In addition, it preserves the exact Markov chains produced by the Metropolis scheme. Further enhancement forNVT-Gibbs ensemble is achieved by combining this technique with the bond formation early rejection one. P4 polyphase code is well known in pulse compression technique. For P4 code with length 1000, peak sidelobe level (PSL) and integrated sidelobe level (ISL) are −36dB and −16dB, respectively. In order to increase the performance, there are different reduction techniques to reduce the sidelobes of P4 code. This paper presents a novel sidelobe reduction technique that reduces the PSL and ISL to −127dB and −104dB, respectively. Also, other sidelobe reduction techniques such as Woo filter are investigated and compared with the novel proposed technique. Simulations and results show that the proposed technique produces a better peak side lobe ratio (PSL) and integrated side lobe ratio (ISL) than other techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the multi-focus image fusion problem, the source images are obtained from the same scene. They are fused to get an image that contains all well-focussed objects. Previously, individual machine-learning models are proposed for image fusion. The performance of individual models is limited to fuse the useful information extracted from the blurred images. To address this problem, we developed a novel ensemble scheme for multi-focus image fusion using support vector machines (SVMs). In the proposed scheme, first, SVM models are constructed using different kernel functions of linear, polynomial, radial basis, and sigmoid. The predictions of individual SVM models are then combined using majority voting. In this way, the combined decision space becomes more informative and discriminant. A comparative analysis of the proposed scheme is carried out with previous techniques. It is found that our scheme is more accurate for synthesized-blurred and real defocussed images. Abstract—Integration of distributed generation with utility network demands satisfactory operation of an islanding detection scheme, as it can otherwise lead to such problems such enhancement in non-detection zone, out-of-phase reclosing, personnel safety, and degradation of power quality. This article presents a new islanding detection scheme based on the rate of change of impedance (dz/dt) of each phase. To calculatedz/dt, phasor computation is carried out using a half-cycle modified discrete Fourier transform algorithm. Test data are generated using the PSCAD/EMTDC software package (HVDC Research Center, Inc., Manitoba). Various islanding conditions have been simulated by disconnecting the main circuit breaker with different values of active and reactive power mismatch. At the same time, different non-islanding conditions have also been simulated through switching (ON/OFF) of load, energization/de-energization of medium transmission lines, short-circuit on an adjacent feeder, and switching (ON/OFF) of the transformer and capacitor bank in the network. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is capable of providing effective discrimination between islanding and non-islanding conditions. This article presents an adaptive distance relay setting for a power transmission network connecting more than one wind farm. The ideal trip characteristics of the distance relay is greatly affected in the presence of complex mutual coupling of transmission lines, as the apparent impedance is significantly affected. Similarly, the reach setting of the relay for the lines connecting wind farms is significantly affected, as the relaying voltage fluctuates continuously. Thus, the proposed study focuses on developing an adaptive relay setting for a transmission network including more than one wind farm and considering variations in operating conditions of wind farms and mutual coupling of transmission lines together. The proposed relay algorithm is extensively tested on two-terminal as well as multi-terminal power networks with wide variations in operating parameters. The performance testing of the proposed adaptive relay characteristics for faults and faults during power swing indicates the potential ability of the approach in handling distance relaying in a transmission system. In this article, a comparison is made between the robustness and efficiency of the CLEAR algorithm and the SIMPLE algorithm on nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinates for compressible flows. Thirteen different high-order convection schemes are employed in the calculations. Subsonic flow, transsonic flow, and supersonic flow in a channel with a circular arc bump and compressible flow in a Laval nozzle are used as test cases. The CLEAR algorithm shows huge potential to compute the transsonic flow in the Laval nozzle and high-speed compressible flows. Results with the ADBQUICKEST scheme, the HLPA scheme, and the MUSCL scheme are stable for both the compressible SIMPLE and CLEAR algorithms for all the mentioned cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
