The Cathaysian Coastal Mountains are thought to be an ancient high‐topographic feature that existed along the margin of South China. They are characterised by extensive Jurassic–Cretaceous magmatism; however, their formation mechanism and timing remains uncertain. In this paper, we present sedimentological and detrital zircon analyses from Cretaceous–Eocene strata and drainage sediments from Hainan Island. Our analyses show a change in provenance from a proximal Cathaysian Coastal arc source in Cretaceous strata to a widely distributed intra‐island granite source in the Eocene strata and modern river sediments. Reconstruction of the crustal thickness evolution for the South China margin from Eu/Eu*‐in‐zircon proxy shows significant crustal thickening during the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous, thereby suggesting the existence of the Cathaysian Coastal Mountains. Together with a compilation of detrital zircon U‐Pb ages in the northern basins of the South China Sea margin, we conclude that the Cathaysian Coastal Mountains extended from the Red River region to Taiwan along the South China margin during the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous and then collapsed/eroded from northeast to southwest during the Eocene–Miocene. This large mountain range supplied detrital sediments to the marginal basins in the northern South China Sea and formed a topographic barrier that prohibited moist Pacific air to reach the relatively arid inland area of South China during the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous. SPME‐GC‐TOFMS, E‐nose, and sensory evaluation were used to explore the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in four Chinese Yunnan coffee at three conditions (beans, ground powder, and brewed coffee). VOCs were detected by GC‐TOFMS and compared the difference between all samples, depending on the VOCs in the coffee sample. The E‐nose was used for rapid detection to differentiate the sample. The two results are analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). Quantitative description analysis (QDA) was used to evaluate the flavor profiles of coffee samples. The results shown that GC‐TOFMS detected 412, 498, and 294 VOCs in roasted, ground powder, and brewed coffee, respectively. The PCA of SPME‐GC‐TOFMS results shown that Nankang coffee was mainly related to ketone compounds; the aroma of Hongguang coffee was determined by dimethyl disulfide and acetic acid; pyrazine and ketone compounds were important to Hainan coffee; ketone and ester compounds were dominated in Xinghuan coffee. The results of E‐nose shown that the first two principal components (PCs) accounted for 97.3%, 92.5%, and 93.8% of variances in roasted, ground powder, and brewed coffee, respectively. The different brands of coffee samples at the same condition shown separated locations on the PCA results of E‐nose. Sensory evaluation shown the special flavor of coffee samples, Nankang coffee with a bake flavor, Hongguang coffee had chocolate and nutty flavors, Hainan coffee had the caramel‐like aroma, and the aroma Xinghuan coffee was sweet. Objective Earlier fieldwork in rural areas of Hainan Island, China, demonstrated that during the course of economic development increasing differences had emerged in lifestyles within communities. It is possible that these variations might have stratified residents into subpopulations with different health attributes. This study examined the association between C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration, a biomarker of future cardiovascular events, and personal lifestyle parameters and the degree of community-level economic development among rural communities. Methods A cross-sectional field survey was undertaken in 19 rural communities in Hainan. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 1,744 participants. Dried blood spot samples were collected to measure high-sensitivity CRP concentration. Sex-stratified multilevel regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with CRP concentration among the participants. Results While CRP concentration was negatively associated with being married and (more) education among men, for women CRP concentration was associated with the frequency of poultry consumption ( P = 0.014) and the experience of migratory work in the previous year ( P = 0.009). In addition, for females, living in communities with a greater degree of inequality, as indexed by the Gini coefficient, was also associated with increased CRP concentration ( P = 0.003). Conclusion Given that CRP concentration is a marker of future CVD risk, this study suggests that within these previously homogenous rural communities, economic development might have stratified people into population subgroups with a different CVD risk.
