ABSTRACT This article challenges entrenched notions of otherness, which presuppose that migrants’ experiences always are inherently different from those of other people. By exploring the experiences of white, middle‐class, highly educated Swedes living in Sweden, I highlight some similarities with challenges traditionally attributed solely to migrants. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the Swedish hub of a large international company, the article examines experiences of Swedish employees participating in international digital meetings, a significant aspect of their daily professional lives. It elucidates aspects of their experiences that are often associated with migrants: struggling with language, feeling dominated and unseen and striving to adapt while subtly challenging the dominance of British and American ‘natives’ through practices of boundary maintenance. The article contributes to the de‐exceptionalization of migrants’ experiences without further equating the privileged Swedes’ living conditions with those of people who are migranticized and subjected to enduring othering in their everyday lives. Aims: The aim of the study was to estimate the effect of household relative poverty on the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis at diagnosis of children with type 1 diabetes using an international standard measurement of relative poverty. Methods: A national population‐based retrospective study was conducted. The Swedish National Diabetes Register (NDR) was linked with data from Sweden's public statistical agency (Statistics Sweden). Children who were diagnosed with new‐onset type 1 diabetes in the period of 2014–2019 were common identifiers. The definition of diabetic ketoacidosis was venous pH <7.30 or a serum bicarbonate level <18 mmol/L. The exposure variable was defined according to the standard definition of the persistent at‐risk‐of‐poverty rate used by the statistical office of the European Union (Eurostat) and several other European public statistical agencies. Univariate and multi‐variable analyses were used to calculate the effect of relative poverty on the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. Results: Children from households with relative poverty had a 41% higher risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (1.41, CI 1.12–1.77, p = 0.004) and more than double the risk of severe diabetic ketoacidosis (pH <7.10) (RR 2.10, CI 1.35–3.25, p = 0.001), as compared to children from households without relative poverty. Conclusions: Relative poverty significantly increases the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis at onset of type 1 diabetes in children, even in a high‐income country with publicly reimbursed health care. Loss of species in food webs can set in motion a cascade of additional (secondary) extinctions.A species' position in a food web (e.g. its trophic level or number of interactions) is known to affect its ability to persist following disturbance.These simple measures, however, offer only a coarse description of how species fit into their community.One would therefore expect that more detailed structural measures such as participation in three‐species motifs (meso‐scale structures which provide information on a species' direct and indirect interactions) will also be related to probability of persistence.Disturbances affecting the basal resources have particularly strong effects on the rest of the food web.However, how disturbances branch out and affect consumer persistence depends on the structural pattern of species interactions in several steps.The magnitude, for example, the proportion of basal resources lost, will likely also affect the outcome.Here, we analyse whether a consumer's risk of secondary extinction after the removal of basal resources depends on the consumer's motif participation and how this relationship varies with the severity of disturbance.We show that consumer species which participate more frequently in the direct competition motif and less frequently in the omnivory motif generally have higher probability of persistence following disturbance to basal resources.However, both the strength of the disturbance and the overall network structure (i.e. connectance) affect the strength and direction of relationships between motif participation and persistence.Motif participation therefore captures important trends in species persistence and provides a rich description of species' structural roles in their communities, but must be considered in the context of network structure as a whole and of the specific disturbance applied. Peat in the Pastaza–Marañón Foreland Basin (PMFB), northern Peru, forms beneath open wetlands, palm swamps, pole forests and seasonally flooded forests. These vegetation communities may represent different successional stages of peatlands, but the spatiotemporal patterns of peatland development in Amazonia are still poorly understood. We present a new geochemical and palaeoecological record spanning the last c. 4330 years from an open peatland (San Roque, core SAR_T3_03_B). Our results suggest the persistence of predominantly herbaceous vegetation communities at the core site since the start of peat accumulation (c. 3180 cal a bp). Micro‐X‐ray fluorescence core scanning provides evidence for episodes of fluvially derived minerogenic input and simultaneous increases in flood‐tolerant taxa relating to intervals of increased frequency and depth of riverine flooding. The establishment of Mauritia flexuosa palms from around 440 cal a bp coincided with a shift to lower flooding depth and frequency which continues to the present day. This study reveals the role of flooding variability in shaping peatland development and influencing vegetation succession in the PMFB, underlining the need to understand natural environmental variability for the conservation of these ecosystems due to their vital contributions to ecosystem services and carbon storage. Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of persistent and widespread environmental pollutants that represent a high concern for human health. They have been shown to be associated with several important physiological processes such as lipid metabolism and the immune system. Consequently, PFAS are suspected to play a role in cardiometabolic disease development. However, the evidence regarding associations between PFAS and overt cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes remains limited and inconsistent. To address this, we conducted a review of the epidemiological evidence. A deeper understanding of potential underlying molecular mechanisms may help to explain inconsistencies in epidemiological findings. Thus, to gain more mechanistic insight, we also summarized evidence from omics and laboratory studies into an adverse outcome pathway framework. Our observations indicate the potential for associations of PFAS with multiple molecular pathways that could have opposite associations with disease risk, which could be further modified by mixture composition, lifestyle factors or genetic polymorphisms. This identifies the need for exposome studies considering mixture effects, the use of multi‐omics data to gain insight in relevant pathways and the integration of epidemiological and laboratory studies to enhance mechanistic understanding and causal inference. Introduction: Elevated phosphate (P) in urine may reflect a high intake of inorganic P salts from food additives. Elevated P in plasma is linked to vascular dysfunction and calcification. Objective: To explore associations between P in urine as well as in plasma and questionnaire‐estimated P intake, and incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: We used the Swedish Mammography Cohort‐Clinical, a population‐based cohort study. At baseline (2004–2009), P was measured in urine and plasma in 1625 women. Dietary P was estimated via a food‐frequency questionnaire. Incident CVD was ascertained via register‐linkage. Associations were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: After a median follow‐up of 9.4 years, 164 composite CVD cases occurred (63 myocardial infarctions [MIs] and 101 strokes). Median P (percentiles 5–95) in urine and plasma were 2.4 (1.40–3.79) mmol/mmol creatinine and 1.13 (0.92–1.36) mmol/L, respectively, whereas dietary P intake was 1510 (1148–1918) mg/day. No correlations were observed between urinary and plasma P (r = −0.07) or dietary P (r = 0.10). Urinary P was associated with composite CVD and MI. The hazard ratio of CVD comparing extreme tertiles was 1.57 (95% confidence interval 1.05, 2.35; P trend 0.037)—independently of sodium excretion, the estimated glomerular filtration rate, both P and calcium in plasma, and diuretic use. Association with CVD for plasma P was 1.41 (0.96, 2.07; P trend 0.077). Conclusion: Higher level of urinary P, likely reflecting a high consumption of highly processed foods, was linked to CVD. Further investigation is needed to evaluate the potential cardiovascular toxicity associated with excessive intake of P beyond nutritional requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tropical forests are changing in composition and productivity, probably in response to changes in climate and disturbances. The responses to these multiple environmental drivers, and the mechanisms underlying the changes, remain largely unknown. Here, we use a functional trait approach on timescales of 10,000 years to assess how climate and disturbances influence the community‐mean adult height, leaf area, seed mass, and wood density for eight lowland and highland forest landscapes. To do so, we combine data of eight fossil pollen records with functional traits and proxies for climate (temperature, precipitation, and El Niño frequency) and disturbances (fire and general disturbances). We found that temperature and disturbances were the most important drivers of changes in functional composition. Increased water availability (high precipitation and low El Niño frequency) generally led to more acquisitive trait composition (large leaves and soft wood). In lowland forests, warmer climates decreased community‐mean height probably because of increased water stress, whereas in highland forests warmer climates increased height probably because of upslope migration of taller species. Disturbance increased the abundance of acquisitive, disturbance‐adapted taxa with small seeds for quick colonization of disturbed sites, large leaves for light capture, and soft wood to attain fast height growth. Fire had weak effects on lowland forests but led to more stress‐adapted taxa that are tall with fast life cycles and small seeds that can quickly colonize burned sites. Site‐specific analyses were largely in line with cross‐site analyses, except for varying site‐level effects of El Niño frequency and fire activity, possibly because regional patterns in El Niño are not a good predictor of local changes, and charcoal abundances do not reflect fire intensity or severity. With future global changes, tropical Amazonian and Andean forests may transition toward shorter, drought‐ and disturbance‐adapted forests in the lowlands but taller forests in the highlands. Scavenging is an important part of food acquisition for many carnivore species that switch between scavenging and predation. In landscapes with anthropogenic impact, humans provide food that scavenging species can utilize. We quantified the magnitude of killing versus scavenging by gray wolves (Canis lupus) in Scandinavia where humans impact the ecosystem through hunter harvest, land use practices, and infrastructure. We investigated the cause of death of different animals utilized by wolves, and examined how the proportion of their consumption time spent scavenging was influenced by season, wolf social affiliation, level of inbreeding, density of moose (Alces alces) as their main prey, density of brown bear (Ursus arctos) as an intraguild competitor, and human density. We used data from 39 GPS‐collared wolves covering 3198 study days (2001–2019), including 14,205 feeding locations within space–time clusters, and 1362 carcasses utilized by wolves. Most carcasses were wolf‐killed (80.5%) while a small part had died from other natural causes (1.9%). The remaining had either anthropogenic mortality causes (4.7%), or the cause of death was unknown (12.9%). Time spent scavenging was higher during winter than during summer and autumn. Solitary wolves spent more time scavenging than pack‐living individuals, likely because individual hunting success is lower than pack success. Scavenging time increased with the mean inbreeding coefficient of the adult wolves, possibly indicating that more inbred individuals resort to scavenging, which requires less body strength. There was weak evidence for competition between wolves and brown bears as well as a positive relationship between human density and time spent scavenging. This study shows how both intrinsic and extrinsic factors drive wolf scavenging behavior, and that despite a high level of inbreeding and access to carrion of anthropogenic origin, wolves mainly utilized their own kills. Summary: We conducted cohort and Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses to examine the associations of circulating proteins with risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) to provide evidence basis for disease prevention and drug development. Cohort analysis was performed in 11 803 participants without baseline VTE. Cox regression was used to estimate the associations between 257 proteins and VTE risk. A machine‐learning model was constructed to compare the importance of identified proteins and traditional risk factors. Genetic association data on VTE were obtained from a genome‐wide meta‐analysis (26 066 cases and 624 053 controls) and FinnGen (14 454 cases and 294 700 controls). The cohort analysis, including 353 incident VTE cases diagnosed during a 6.6‐year follow‐up, identified 21 proteins associated with VTE risk after false discovery rate correction. The machine‐learning model indicated that body mass index and von Willebrand factor (vWF) made the same as well as most of the contributions to the overall model prediction. MR analysis found that genetically predicted levels of vWF, SERPINE1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, known as PAI‐1), EPHB4 (ephrin type‐B receptor 4), TYRO3 (tyrosine‐protein kinase receptor TYRO3), TNFRSF11A (tumour necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 11A), and BOC (brother of CDO) were causally associated with VTE risk. The aim was to collect and appraise scientific evidence that could be used to derive an upper intake level for folic acid/folate. Five systematic reviews of the literature were conducted to identify evidence to i) characterize the dose‐response curve between plasma/serum (P/S) folate and dietary folate intake expressed as dietary folate equivalents (DFE) in adults, and to assess the relationship between 'high' folate (intake/biomarkers) in humans with low B12 status and the ii) development of neuropathy and iii) cognitive impairment or dementia, and risk of iv) colorectal adenomas and colorectal cancer (CRC) and v) and prostate cancer. Narrative reviews were also performed. The linear meta‐regression model P/S folate (nmol/L) = 6.0 + 0.034*DFE/d (95% confidence interval, CI; 0.027‐0.040), R2 = 0.68, based on 22 studies and 60 data points could be used to predict mean P/S folate (and 95% CI) based on DFE intake. In view of the paucity of data, no comprehensive uncertainty analysis and evidence integration were performed for effects of 'high' folate intake on neuropathy, cognitive function/dementia. Comprehensive uncertainty analyses and evidence integration for a detrimental effect at high folate intake/status were performed for folic acid interventions and development of colorectal adenomas, for P/S folate from observational studies in relation to CRC incidence, and for total folate intake from observational studies in relation to prostate cancer incidence. The folic acid interventions were few (n = 4) and revealed both beneficial and detrimental effects on adenoma recurrence. For CRC the meta‐analyses on P/S folate indicated no association, but the risk estimates in the highest folate exposure groups were compared to levels indicating folate inadequacy or deficiency, thus, the research question could not be adequately addressed. For prostate cancer incidence too few studies with mixed results prevented any clear conclusion on total folate intake and risk of prostate cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estimation of kidney function is often part of daily clinical practice, mostly done by using the endogenous glomerular filtration rate (GFR)‐markers creatinine or cystatin C. A recommendation to use both markers in parallel in 2010 has resulted in new knowledge concerning the pathophysiology of kidney disorders by the identification of a new set of kidney disorders, selective glomerular hypofiltration syndromes. These syndromes, connected to strong increases in mortality and morbidity, are characterized by a selective reduction in the glomerular filtration of 5–30 kDa molecules, such as cystatin C, compared to the filtration of small molecules <1 kDa dominating the glomerular filtrate, for example water, urea and creatinine. At least two types of such disorders, shrunken or elongated pore syndrome, are possible according to the pore model for glomerular filtration. Selective glomerular hypofiltration syndromes are prevalent in investigated populations, and patients with these syndromes often display normal measured GFR or creatinine‐based GFR‐estimates. The syndromes are characterized by proteomic changes promoting the development of atherosclerosis, indicating antibodies and specific receptor‐blocking substances as possible new treatment modalities. Presently, the KDIGO guidelines for diagnosing kidney disorders do not recommend cystatin C as a general marker of kidney function and will therefore not allow the identification of a considerable number of patients with selective glomerular hypofiltration syndromes. Furthermore, as cystatin C is uninfluenced by muscle mass, diet or variations in tubular secretion and cystatin C‐based GFR‐estimation equations do not require controversial race or sex terms, it is obvious that cystatin C should be a part of future KDIGO guidelines. Songbirds have evolved diverse strategies to cope with seasonality, including long‐, medium‐, and short‐distance migration. There is some evidence that birds with a longer migration distance deposit fuel faster. However, most studies focus on long‐distance migrants. Comparisons between species with different migration distances are necessary to broaden our understanding of fueling capacity in migratory birds. We present maximum fuel deposition rates of five songbird species migrating along the southeast coast of Sweden in autumn with migration distances ranging from long (neotropical migrant) to short (partial/irruptive migrant) (Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus, Lesser Whitethroat Curruca curruca, Common Chiffchaff P. collybita, European Robin Erithacus rubecula, and Blue Tit Cyanistes caeruleus). The birds were fed ad libitum in captivity and were exposed to either extended or natural daylength. All species ceased to increase in mass when they reached a certain fuel load, generally corresponding to migration distance, despite unlimited access to food and ample time for foraging. Blue Tits, Willow Warblers, and Lesser Whitethroats had the highest fuel deposition rates with extended daylength (19%, 20%, and 20%, respectively), and about 13% with natural daylength, which is comparable to the highest rates found in migratory songbirds in nature. European Robins and Common Chiffchaffs that winter in the temperate Mediterranean had the lowest fuel deposition rates (12% and 12% with extended daylength, respectively). Our results suggest that the long‐ and short‐distance migrants in this study have developed an extreme capacity for rapid refueling for different reasons; speedy migration to distant wintering grounds or winter survival in Scandinavia. This study contributes to our current knowledge of maximum fuel deposition rates in different species and the limitations posed by daylength. We highlight the need for future studies of species with different migration strategies in order to draw broad conclusions about fueling strategies of migratory birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The indication of surgery in primary hyperparathyroidism has been controversial, as many patients experience mild disease. The primary aim was to evaluate fracture incidence in a contemporary population‐based cohort of patients having surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism. The secondary aim was to investigate whether preoperative serum calcium, adenoma weight or multiglandular disease influence fracture incidence. Design: A retrospective cohort study with population controls. Primary outcomes, defined by discharge diagnoses and prescriptions, were any fracture and fragility fracture, secondary outcomes were multiple fractures anytime and osteoporosis. Subjects were followed 10 years pre‐ and up to 10 years postoperatively (or 31 December 2015). Multiple events per subject were allowed. Fracture incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for patients pre‐ and postoperatively were tabulated and evaluated with mixed‐effects Poisson regression. Secondary outcomes were evaluated using conditional logistic regression. Patients: A Swedish nationwide cohort of patients having surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism (n = 5009) from the Scandinavian Quality Register for Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal Surgery between 2003 and 2013 was matched with population controls (n = 14,983). Data were cross‐linked with Statistics Sweden and the National Board of Health and Welfare. Measurements: Preoperative serum calcium and adenoma weight at pathological examination. Results: Patients had an increased incidence rate of any fracture preoperatively, IRR 1.27 (95% confidence interval: 1.11–1.46), highest in the last year before surgery. Fracture incidence was not increased postoperatively. Serum calcium, adenoma weight and multiglandular disease were not associated with fracture incidence. Aims: Ventricular longitudinal function measured as basal‐apical atrioventricular plane displacement (AVPD) or global longitudinal strain (GLS) is a potent predictor of mortality and could potentially be a predictor of heart failure‐associated morbidity. We hypothesized that low AVPD and GLS are associated with the combined endpoint of cardiovascular mortality and heart failure‐associated morbidity. Methods and results: Two hundred eighty‐seven patients (age 62 ± 12 years, 78% male) with heart failure with reduced (≤40%) ejection fraction (HFrEF) referred to a cardiovascular magnetic resonance exam were included. Ventricular longitudinal function, ventricular volume, and myocardial fibrosis or infarction were analysed from cine and late gadolinium enhancement images. National registries provided data on causes of cardiovascular hospitalizations and cardiovascular mortality for the combined endpoint. Time‐to‐event analysis capable of including reoccurring events was employed with a 5‐year follow‐up. HFrEF patients had EF 26.5 ± 8.0%, AVPD 7.8 ± 2.4 mm, and GLS −7.5 ± 3.0%. In contrast, ventricular longitudinal function was approximately twice as large in an age‐matched control group (AVPD 15.3 ± 1.6 mm; GLS −20.6 ± 2.0%; P < 0.001 for both). There were 578 events in total, and the majority were HF hospitalizations (n = 418). Other major events were revascularizations (n = 64), cardiovascular deaths (n = 40), and myocardial infarctions (n = 21). One hundred fifty‐five (54%) patients experienced at least one event (mean 2.0, range 0–64). Of these patients, 119 (71%) had three events or fewer, and the first three events comprised 51% of all events (295 events). Patients in the bottom AVPD or GLS tertile (<6.8 mm or >−6.1%) overall experienced more than 3 times as many events as the top tertile (>8.8 mm or <−8.4%; P < 0.001). Patients in this tertile also faced more cardiovascular deaths (P < 0.05), HF hospitalizations (P = 0.001), myocardial infarctions (only GLS: P = 0.032), and accumulated longer in‐hospital length‐of‐stay overall (AVPD 20.9 vs. 9.1 days; GLS 22.4 vs. 6.5 days; P = 0.001 for both), and from HF hospitalizations (AVPD 19.3 vs. 8.3 days; GLS 19.3 vs. 5.4 days; P = 0.001 for both). In multivariate analysis adjusted for significant covariates, AVPD and GLS remained independent predictors of events (hazard ratio 1.12 per‐mm‐decrease and 1.13 per‐%‐increase) alongside hyponatremia (<135 mmol/L), aetiology of HF, and LV end‐diastolic volume index. Conclusions: Low ventricular longitudinal function is associated with an increase in number of events as well as longer in‐hospital stay from cardiovascular causes. In addition, AVPD and GLS have independent prognostic value for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in HFrEF patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large carnivores are elusive and use large areas, which causes monitoring to be challenging and costly. Moreover, management to reduce conflicts and simultaneously ensure long‐term population viability require precise population estimates. In Scandinavia, the monitoring of wolves (Canis lupus) is primarily based on counting packs, identifying reproduction, and genetically identifying territorial wolves from noninvasive DNA samples. We assessed the reliability of wolf monitoring in Scandinavia by estimating the detectability of territorial pairs, packs, and reproduction. Our data, comprising snow‐tracking data and DNA‐identified individuals from 2005–2016, covered 11 consecutive winter monitoring seasons (Oct–Mar). Among 343 cases where we identified a wolf pack, territorial wolves were also detected in the same area during the previous season in 323 (94.2%) cases. In only 6 of the remaining 20 cases, there was no prior knowledge of territorial wolves in the area. Among the 328 detected reproduction events (litter born to a pack), we detected 97% during the monitoring period and identified the rest ≥1 year later from kinship assessments of all DNA‐detected individuals. These results suggest that we failed to detect only few packs with reproduction events during the monitoring season that followed breeding. Yearly monitoring of territorial individuals and continuous updates of the pedigree allowed us to retrospectively identify reproduction events and packs that were not identified earlier. Cyclopropanes are commonly employed structural moieties in drug design since their incorporation is often associated with increased target affinity, improved metabolic stability, and increased rigidity to access bioactive conformations. Robust chemical cyclopropanation procedures have been developed which proceed with high yield and broad substrate scope, and have been applied to labeled substrates. Recently, engineered enzymes have been shown to perform cyclopropanations with remarkable diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity, but this biocatalytic approach has not been applied to labeled substrates to date. In this study, the use of enzyme catalysis for the synthesis of labeled cyclopropanes was investigated. Two readily available enzymes, a modified CYP450 enzyme and a modified Aeropyrum pernix protoglobin, were investigated for the cyclopropanation of a variety of substituted styrenes. For this biocatalytic transformation, the enzymes required the use of ethyl diazoacetate. Due to the highly energetic nature of this molecule, alternatives were investigated. The final optimized cyclopropanation was successfully demonstrated using n‐hexyl diazoacetate, resulting in moderate to high enantiomeric excess. The optimized procedure was used to generate labeled cyclopropanes from 13C‐glycine, forming all four labeled stereoisomers of phosphodiesterase type‐IV inhibitor, MK0952. These reactions provide a convenient and effective biocatalytic route to stereoselective 13C‐labeled cyclopropanes and serve as a proof‐of‐concept for generating stereoselective labeled cyclopropanes. Aim: Understanding the spatial ecology of animal movements is a critical element in conserving long‐lived, highly mobile marine species. Analyzing networks developed from movements of six sea turtle species reveals marine connectivity and can help prioritize conservation efforts. Location: Global. Methods: We collated telemetry data from 1235 individuals and reviewed the literature to determine our dataset's representativeness. We used the telemetry data to develop spatial networks at different scales to examine areas, connections, and their geographic arrangement. We used graph theory metrics to compare networks across regions and species and to identify the role of important areas and connections. Results: Relevant literature and citations for data used in this study had very little overlap. Network analysis showed that sampling effort influenced network structure, and the arrangement of areas and connections for most networks was complex. However, important areas and connections identified by graph theory metrics can be different than areas of high data density. For the global network, marine regions in the Mediterranean had high closeness, while links with high betweenness among marine regions in the South Atlantic were critical for maintaining connectivity. Comparisons among species‐specific networks showed that functional connectivity was related to movement ecology, resulting in networks composed of different areas and links. Main conclusions: Network analysis identified the structure and functional connectivity of the sea turtles in our sample at multiple scales. These network characteristics could help guide the coordination of management strategies for wide‐ranging animals throughout their geographic extent. Most networks had complex structures that can contribute to greater robustness but may be more difficult to manage changes when compared to simpler forms. Area‐based conservation measures would benefit sea turtle populations when directed toward areas with high closeness dominating network function. Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) have recently naturally recolonized southern Sweden. The first documented reproduction of lynx in recent times occurred in 2003, and the population increased from 2 to 48 family groups (the unit of measurement in Swedish monitoring) during its first 18 years (2003/2004–2020/2021). We did not detect any Allee effect, that is, lower growth rate at low population density, during the recolonization of southern Sweden, although our population simulations revealed a non‐negligible (30%) chance that population observed development could include an Allee effect. The probable absence of an Allee effect was likely because colonizing females did not lack mating partners, as a larger number of wide‐ranging males were established in the area before documented reproduction took place. Despite the absence of an Allee effect, the growth rate during recolonization was lower in southern Sweden (λ = 1.20) than in central Sweden (λ = 1.29). We have no evidence of higher mortality, including that from poaching, or lower reproduction in southern Sweden could explain the lower growth rate. Instead, we suggest that the lower growth rate during the recolonization of southern Sweden was explained by fewer immigrants arriving from central Sweden due to areas of less suitable habitat between central and southern Sweden, partially preventing immigration southward. From a conservation point of view, it is positive that this small population could recover without being negatively influenced by an Allee effect, as small populations with an Allee effect experience lower viability than those without. Objective: To assess the impact of lymphadenectomy and lymphoedema of the lower limbs (LLL) on health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) 1 year after surgery for endometrial cancer (EC). Design: Prospective longitudinal cohort multicentre study. Setting: Departments of obstetrics and gynaecology at four university hospitals, six central hospitals and four county hospitals in Sweden. Population: Two‐hundred‐and‐thirty‐five women with early stage EC were included; 116 with high‐risk EC underwent surgery including lymphadenectomy (+LA), and 119 with low‐risk EC had surgery without lymphadenectomy (−LA). Methods: The generic SF‐36 and EQ‐5D‐3L and the lymphoedema‐specific LYMQOL questionnaire were used to assess HRQoL. LLL was assessed by systematic circumferential measurements of the legs enabling volume estimation, clinical evaluation and patient‐reported perception of leg swelling. All assessments were carried out on four occasions; preoperatively, and 4–6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year postoperatively. Main outcome measure: HRQoL scores. Results: No significant differences were seen in HRQoL between the +LA and –LA groups 1 year postoperatively. Irrespective of method of determining LLL, women with LLL were significantly more affected in the LYMQOL domains Function, Appearance/body image and Physical symptoms, but not in the domain Emotion/mood, than women without LLL. No such differences were seen in the generic HRQoL or in the LYMQOL global score between the groups with and without LLL. Conclusions: Lymphadenectomy did not seem to affect generic HRQoL adversely. Irrespective of the method of measuring, LLL affected the lymphoedema‐specific HRQoL negatively, mainly in physical domains, but had no impact on the generic HRQoL. The seasonal timing of moult in migratory birds is an adaptation to cope with time constraints in the annual cycle. Kiat and Izhaki analysed moult patterns in Palaearctic passerines and rejected the proposition that seasonally divided moult is an endogenously controlled strategy. Instead, they advocated the view that it occurs due to a flexible and opportunistic timing of moult. In contrast, we argue that Kiat and Izhaki's analysis is flawed and that they overlooked several important facts about moult in the Barred Warbler Sylvia nisoria and other species showing seasonally divided moult. These include the facts that juveniles replace a few secondaries already in their first winter, and that the moult sequences of primaries and secondaries are decoupled compared with the typical passerine complete moult sequence. Bone mineral density (BMD) is an established measure used to diagnose patients with osteoporosis. In clinical trials, change in BMD has been shown to provide a reliable estimate of fracture risk reduction, and achieved BMD T‐score has been shown to reflect the near‐term risk of fracture. We aimed to test the association between BMD T‐score and fracture risk in patients treated for osteoporosis in a real‐world setting. This retrospective, observational cohort study included Swedish females aged ≥55 years who had a total hip BMD measurement at one of three participating clinics. Patients were separated into two cohorts: bisphosphonate‐treated and bisphosphonate‐naïve prior to BMD measurement, stratified by age and prior nonvertebral fracture status. The primary outcome was cumulative incidence of clinical fractures within 24 months of BMD measurement, with other fracture types included as secondary outcomes. Associations between T‐score and fracture risk were estimated using proportional hazards regression and restricted cubic splines. A total of 15,395 patients were analyzed: 11,973 bisphosphonate‐naïve and 3422 bisphosphonate‐treated. In the 24 months following BMD measurement, 6.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 5.9–6.7) of bisphosphonate‐naïve and 8.4% (95% CI, 7.5–9.4) of bisphosphonate‐treated patients experienced a clinical fracture. Strong inverse relationships between BMD T‐score and fracture incidence were observed in both cohorts. Among bisphosphonate‐naïve patients, this relationship appeared to plateau around T‐score −1.5, indicating smaller marginal reductions in fracture risk above this value; bisphosphonate‐treated patients showed a more consistent marginal change in fracture risk across the evaluated T‐scores (−3.0 to –0.5). Trends remained robust regardless of age and prior fracture status. This real‐world demonstration of a BMD–fracture risk association in both bisphosphonate‐naïve and bisphosphonate‐treated patients extends evidence from clinical trials and recent meta‐regressions supporting the suitability of total hip BMD as a meaningful outcome for the clinical management of patients with osteoporosis. © 2021 The Authors. Complement-mediated atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is an ultrarare renal disease primarily caused by genetic alterations in complement proteins. The genetic work-up required for confirmation of diagnosis is complicated and not always logistically accessible. The aim of the present study was to apply a diagnostic scheme compliant with the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines to investigate the prevalence of complement-mediated aHUS among subjects formerly included in a retrospective cohort of clinically suspected aHUS. Clinical outcomes and genetic correlations to complement analyses were assessed. Subjects were investigated with medical record reviewing, inquiries, and laboratory analyses composed of whole genome sequencing; enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for factor I, factor H, and factor H-specific antibodies; nephelometry for complement components three of four; flow cytometry for CD46 surface expression and immunoblotting for the presence of factor H-related protein 1. In total, 45% (n = 60/134) of the subjects were deceased at the time of study. Twenty of the eligible subjects consented to study participation. Based on genetic sequencing and clinical characteristics, six were categorized as definite/highly suspected complement-mediated aHUS, 10 as non-complement-mediated aHUS and four as having an HUS-like phenotype. In the complement-mediated aHUS group, two subjects had not received an aHUS diagnosis during the routine clinical management. Disease-contributing/likely disease-contributing genetic variants were identified in five subjects, including a novel missense variant in the complement factor H gene (c.3450A>G, p.I1150M). This study illustrates the risk for misdiagnosis in the management of patients with complement-mediated aHUS and the importance of a comprehensive assessment of both phenotype and genotype to reach a diagnosis. The conservation of migratory species poses significant challenges that may be countered by detailed knowledge about the sites used by migrants throughout the annual cycle. We present the first GPS‐tracking data on the migration of declining Caspian terns Hydroprogne caspia breeding in the Baltic Sea. For 39 Caspian terns from colonies along a latitudinal gradient from 57 to 65°N, we identified key migratory routes, stopovers and wintering areas. In autumn these seabirds migrated using coastal and freshwater stopovers along six routes to reach their wintering areas across the Sahel, the Nile River Basin and the southern Iberian Peninsula. In spring, adults returned to the breeding grounds in the Baltic using a time optimizing strategy by reducing time at stopover by 78%, whereas most subadults remained sedentary and some performed only partial return migrations. Of the stopover sites used in both seasons, 58% are protected and have a reported management plan. Conservation strategies in wintering areas, stopover sites that are not protected or had not been previously recognized, and the inclusion of the species in important migratory flyways across Europe and Africa will be important to prevent further population declines of a species that depends on aquatic habitats. Large carnivore feeding ecology plays a crucial role for management and conservation for predators and their prey. One of the keys to this kind of research is to identify the species composition in the predator diet, for example, prey determination from scat content. DNA‐based methods applied to detect prey in predators' scats are viable alternatives to traditional macroscopic approaches, showing an increased reliability and higher prey detection rate. Here, we developed a molecular method for prey species identification in wolf (Canis lupus) scats using multiple species‐specific marker loci on the cytochrome b gene for 18 target species. The final panel consisted of 80 assays, with a minimum of four markers per target species, and that amplified specifically when using a high‐throughput Nanofluidic array technology (Fluidigm Inc.). As a practical example, we applied the method to identify target prey species DNA in 80 wolf scats collected in Sweden. Depending on the number of amplifying markers required to obtain a positive species call in a scat, the success in determining at least one prey species from the scats ranged from 44% to 92%. Although we highlight the need to evaluate the optimal number of markers for sensitive target species detection, the developed method is a fast and cost‐efficient tool for prey identification in wolf scats and it also has the potential to be further developed and applied to other areas and large carnivores as well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of aging on the properties of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with multi‐wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Nanocomposites were prepared with nanotubes at 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt%. The long‐term durability of the prepared materials was evaluated by thermo‐oxidative aging test. Test bodies were aged at 110°C for up to 10 weeks. The nanocomposites were characterized by differential scanning calometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), 13C‐NMR, elongation at break, and transmission electron microscopy. The aging mainly occurred on the surface of the samples and the neat HDPE showed a strong yellowing after the aging. A strong reduction in elongation at break was seen. For neat HDPE, the elongation at break was reduced from roughly 1400–25%. When HDPE was reinforced with the nanotubes, the reduction was less dramatic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pancreas disease (PD) is a serious challenge in European salmonid aquaculture caused by salmonid alphavirus (SAV). In this study, we report the effect of immunization of Atlantic salmon with three attenuated infectious SAV3 strains with targeted mutations in a glycosylation site of the envelope E2 protein and/or in a nuclear localization signal in the capsid protein. In a pilot experiment, it was shown that the mutated viral strains replicated in fish, transmitted to naïve cohabitants and that the transmission had not altered the sequences. In the main experiment, the fish were immunized with the strains and challenged with SAV3 eight weeks after immunization. Immunization resulted in infection both in injected fish and 2 weeks later in the cohabitant fish, followed by a persistent but declining load of the mutated virus variants in the hearts. The immunized fish developed clinical signs and pathology consistent with PD prior to challenge. However, fish injected with the virus mutated in both E2 and capsid showed little clinical signs and had higher average weight gain than the groups immunized with the single mutated variants. The SAV strain used for challenge was not detected in the immunized fish indicating that these fish were protected against superinfection with SAV during the 12 weeks of the experiment. Basal friction heavily controls the dynamics of fast‐flowing glaciers. However, the best approach to modeling friction is unclear, increasing uncertainties in projections of future mass loss and sea‐level rise. Here, we compare six friction laws and evaluate them for Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland, using a higher order three‐dimensional ice‐sheet model. We model glacier retreat and mass loss under an ocean‐only warming until year 2300, while not considering the effects of a future warmer atmosphere. Regardless of the friction law, we find that breakup of Petermann's ice shelf is likely to occur within the next decades. However, future grounding‐line retreat differs by 10s of km and estimates of sea‐level rise may quadruple, depending on the friction law employed. A bedrock ridge halts the retreat for four of the laws, and Petermann retreats furthest when applying a Budd or a Coulomb‐type "till law." Depending on the friction law, sea‐level contributions differ by 133% and 282% by 2300 for 2°C and 5°C ocean warming scenarios, respectively. Plain Language Summary: Rocks, sediments, and water under glaciers can influence glacier speed and their response to climate change. How to best represent these effects in computer models is unclear, which magnifies uncertainties in our projections of future sea‐level rise. We, therefore, compared six ways to represent the under‐ice environment in a computer model, and simulate the future of Petermann Glacier, northern Greenland's largest and fastest glacier. We study how the glacier reacts to the 2°C–5°C warmer ocean expected, if carbon emissions continue, while not considering the effects of a future warmer atmosphere. The experiments indicate that Petermann's ice shelf, the glacier's floating extension, will likely breakup within the next decades. Our estimates of future sea‐level rise by year 2300 from Petermann Glacier also quadruple, depending on how the under‐ice conditions is treated in the model. This dramatically highlights the limitations of current ice‐sheet models and projections, and pinpoints the need to improve the representation of the under‐ice environment and marine‐based ice sheets in further research. Objective: Autoantibodies, such as anti–citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs), have been described as inducing bone loss in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which can also be reflected by bone mineral density (BMD). We therefore examined the association between osteoporosis and autoantibodies in two independent RA cohorts. Methods: Dual x‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar spine and left hip was performed in 408 Dutch patients with early RA during 5 years of follow‐up and in 198 Swedish patients with early RA during 10 years of follow‐up. The longitudinal effect of ACPAs and other autoantibodies on several BMD measures was assessed using generalized estimating equations. Results: In the Dutch cohort, significantly lower BMD at baseline was observed in ACPA‐positive patients compared to ACPA‐negative patients, with an estimated marginal mean BMD in the left hip of 0.92 g/cm2 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.91–0.93) versus 0.95 g/cm2 (95% CI 0.93–0.97) (P = 0.01). In line with this, significantly lower Z scores at baseline were noted in the ACPA‐positive group compared to the ACPA‐negative group (estimated marginal mean Z score in the left hip of 0.18 [95% CI 0.08–0.29] versus 0.48 [95% CI 0.33–0.63]) (P < 0.01). However, despite clear differences at baseline, ACPA positivity was not associated with greater decrease in absolute BMD or Z scores over time. Furthermore, there was no association between BMD and higher levels of ACPAs or other autoantibodies (rheumatoid factor and anti–carbamylated protein antibodies). In the Swedish cohort, ACPA‐positive patients tended to have a higher prevalence of osteopenia at baseline (P = 0.04), but again, ACPA positivity was not associated with an increased prevalence of osteopenia or osteoporosis over time. Conclusion: The presence of ACPAs is associated with significantly lower BMD at baseline, but not with greater BMD loss over time in treated RA patients. Aim: To evaluate whether a very low glycated haemoglobin A (HbA1c) (<48 mmol/mol, 6.5%) during childhood compared to higher HbA1c values further decreases the risk for microvascular complications. Methods: Data were included from the 5116 patients with type 1 diabetes transferred from the Swedish paediatric diabetes quality registry to the Swedish National Diabetes Register (NDR), until 2014. All HbA1c values ever registered in the paediatric registry were used to divide patients into six groups based on the mean HbA1c. Values were compared with HbA1c registered in 2013 and 2014 in NDR, together with data on retinopathy, micro‐ and macroalbuminuria, age at onset and duration of diabetes. Results: The group with lowest mean‐HbA1c during childhood had also the lowest mean as young adults during 2013 and 2014. The most common complication as young adults was retinopathy. The proportion with macroalbuminuria was 3% in the lowest HbA1c group during childhood and 3.9% in the highest group, and lower in the groups in between. Microalbuminuria had the same pattern. Retinopathy increased with each HbA1c group. Conclusion: Children with the lowest HbA1c values had the lowest HbA1c values as adults. Modifications of Amazonian forests by pre‐Columbian peoples are thought to have left ecological legacies that have persisted to the modern day. Most Amazonian palaeoecological records do not, however, provide the required temporal resolution to document the nuanced changes of pre‐Columbian disturbance or post‐disturbance succession and recovery, making it difficult to detect any direct, or indirect, ecological legacies on tree species.Here, we investigate the fossil pollen, phytolith and charcoal history of Lake Kumpaka, Ecuador, during the last 2,415 years in c. 3–50 year time intervals to assess ecological legacies resulting from pre‐Columbian forest modification, disturbance, cultivation and fire usage.Two cycles of pre‐Columbian cultivation (one including slash‐and‐burn cultivation, the other including slash‐and‐mulch cultivation) were documented in the record around 2150–1430 cal. year BP and 1250–680 cal. year BP, with following post‐disturbance succession dynamics. Modern disturbance was documented after c. 10 cal. year BP. The modern disturbance produced a plant composition unlike those of the two past disturbances, as fire frequencies reached their peak in the 2,415‐year record. The disturbance periods varied in intensity and duration, while the overturn of taxa following a disturbance lasted for hundreds of years. The recovery periods following pre‐Columbian disturbance shared some similar patterns of early succession, but the longer‐term recovery patterns differed.Synthesis. The trajectories of change after a cessation of cultivation can be anticipated to differ depending on the intensity, scale, duration and manner of the past disturbance. In the Kumpaka record, no evidence of persistent enrichment or depletion of intentionally altered taxa (i.e. direct legacy effects) was found but indirect legacy effects, however, were documented and have persisted to the modern day. These findings highlight the strengths of using empirical data to reconstruct past change rather than relying solely on modern plant populations to infer past human management and ecological legacies, and challenge some of the current hypotheses involving the persistence of pre‐Columbian legacies on modern plant populations. In this study, a commercial grade of talc is used as filler in a bimodal high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) used for the pressure pipe application. The composites are characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and tensile testing. The results illustrate that the presence of talc has a considerable effect on the material properties and the pipe life‐length. It is presented that the thermal stability measured by TGA is enhanced, while the oxidation induction time decreases in cooperation of the talc. The nucleation behavior of talc particles during crystallization has no obvious effect on melting temperature; however, an increase in crystallization temperature is evidenced. Storage modulus as recorded from the dynamic mechanical analysis is also increased in all composites, furthermore, the temperature of the α relaxation is shifted toward higher temperature and finally the strain hardening modulus for the HDPE/talc composites is assessed and compared to the neat HDPE as a measure of environmental stress crack resistance. This study investigates the sex steroid hormone profile in younger men with distal radius fracture (DRF) to elucidate if this could explain the low bone density and osteoporosis previously observed. In a case–control study, 73 men with DRF (mean age 38 ± 9 years; range, 20–51) was compared with 194 age‐matched, population controls. Performed assays: total testosterone (TT), calculated free testosterone (cFT), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle‐stimulating hormone (FSH), sex hormone‐binding globulin (SHBG), and total estradiol (E2). BMD hip and spine were measured. Fracture cases had lower cFT (298 versus 329 pmol/L; p = 0.008), but not TT, compared with controls. FSH and SHBG were not statistically different. LH was almost 30% higher (5.7 versus 4.5 IU/L; p < 0.001) and a lower E2 was observed (80.0 versus 87.1; p = 0.098). Men with DRF had a lower E2/SHBG ratio compared with controls (2.3 versus 2.9; p = 0.013). A higher proportion of the fracture group had low TT (<10.5 nmol/L; 21% versus 11%; p = 0.052), low cFT (<220 pmol/L; 18% versus 8%; p = 0.017), and low E2 (<73 pmol/L; 48% versus 35%; p = 0.044). Odds ratio (OR) for fracture when having low cFT was 2.3 (95% CI, 1.02–5.49; p = 0.044); with low E2, the OR was 1.7 (95% CI, 0.96–2.96). In this study in young men with DRF exploring sex hormone levels, we find that sex hormone profiles may be disturbed with a lower E2/SHBG ratio, lower cFT, and higher LH. Estrogen is also a strong determinant of bone mass in men; hence, low levels of E2 may be contributing to the observed lower BMD and these differences may be relevant to fracture risk. © 2020 The Authors. Biologging devices are providing detailed insights into the behaviour and movement of animals in their natural environments. It is usually assumed that this method of gathering data does not impact on the behaviour observed. However, potential negative effects on birds have rarely been investigated before field‐based studies are initiated. Seabirds which both fly and use pursuit diving may be particularly sensitive to increases in drag and load resulting from carrying biologging devices. We studied chick‐rearing adult common guillemots Uria aalge equipped with and without back‐mounted GPS tags over short deployments of a few days. Concurrently guillemots carried small leg‐mounted TDR devices (time‐depth recorders) providing activity data throughout. Changes in body mass and breeding success were followed for device equipped and control guillemots. At the colony level guillemots lost body mass throughout the chick‐rearing period. When‐equipped with the additional GPS tag, the guillemots lost mass at close to twice the rate they did when equipped with only the smaller leg‐mounted TDR device. The elevated mass loss suggests an impact on energy expenditure or foraging performance. When equipped with GPS tags diving performance, time‐activity budgets and daily patterns of activity were unchanged, yet dive depth distributions differed. We review studies of tag‐effects in guillemots Uria sp. finding elevated mass loss and reduced chick‐provisioning to be the most commonly observed effects. Less information is available for behavioural measures, and results vary between studies. In general, small tags deployed over several days appear to have small or no measurable effect on the behavioural variables commonly observed in most guillemot tagging studies. However, there may still be impacts on fitness via physiological effects and/or reduced chick‐provisioning, while more detailed measures of behaviour (e.g. using accelerometery) may reveal effects on diving and flight performance. Background: Autonomic neuropathy (AN) commonly arises as a long-term complication in diabetes mellitus and can be diagnosed from heart rate variability (HRV), calculated from electrocardiogram recordings. Psychosocial stress also affects HRV and could be one of several confounders for cardiac AN. The present work investigated the impact of psychosocial stress on HRV in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and assessed the use of salivary cortisol as a biomarker for psychosocial stress in this context.Methods: A total of 167 individuals 6-60 years old (113 with T1DM and 54 healthy controls) underwent 24-hr ECG recordings with HRV analysis. Salivary cortisol was sampled thrice during the registration day. Perceived psychosocial stress along with other factors of possible importance for the interpretation of HRV was documented in a diary.Results: Heart rate variability (high-frequency power during sleep) was reduced (p < .05) with older age, longer diabetes duration, higher mean glucose levels, physical inactivity, and perceived psychosocial stress. Salivary cortisol levels in the evening were increased (p < .05) in women in ovulation phase, in individuals with preceding hypoglycemia or with hyperglycemia. The amplitude of salivary cortisol was reduced (p < .05) with the presence of perceived psychosocial stress, but only in adult healthy controls, not in individuals with diabetes.Conclusion: Psychosocial stress might be a confounder for reduced HRV when diagnosing cardiac AN in T1DM. Salivary cortisol is, however, not a useful biomarker for psychosocial stress in diabetes since the physiological stress of both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia seems to overrule the effect of psychosocial stress on cortisol. Resource dispersion or kin selection are commonly used to explain animal spatial and social organization. Despite this, studies examining how these factors interact in wild populations of solitary animals are rare. We used 16 years of individual‐level spatial and genetic data to disentangle how resources and relatedness influence spatial organization of a solitary predator, the Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx. As expected, space‐use overlap between neighbouring individuals increased when food resources were heterogeneous and unpredictably distributed (as predicted from resource dispersion) or when neighbours were closely related (as predicted from kin selection). However, these patterns were highly dependent on each other. Increased spatial overlap was restricted to mother–daughter dyads, with this effect only occurring in areas and during seasons when prey was clumped and irregularly distributed in the landscape. Additionally, full‐siblings with similar levels of genetic relatedness did not show these patterns, suggesting that kin selection is mediated through mother–daughter recognition, and is only beneficial under specific resource dispersion circumstances. Our results provide key insights into the flexibility of spatial organization of solitary animals, and clearly show the importance of considering the interaction between resources and kinship when assessing animal space use patterns. Several species of migratory swifts breed in the Western Palearctic, but they differ in reproductive traits and nonbreeding areas explored in Africa. We examined survival and recapture probabilities of two species of swifts by capture–mark–recapture data collected in northern Italy (Pallid Swift Apus pallidus in Carmagnola, Turin, and Common Swift Apus apus in Guiglia, Modena) in the breeding season (May–July). Apparent survival rates were relatively high (>71%), comparable to other studies of European swifts, but showed marked annual variations. We used geolocators to establish the exact wintering areas of birds breeding in our study colonies. Common Swifts explored the Sahel zone during migration and spent the winter in SE Africa, while the Pallid Swifts remained in the Sahel zone for a longer time, shifting locations southeast down to Cameroun and Nigeria later in winter. These movements followed the seasonal rains from north to south (October to December). In both species, we found large yearly differences in survival probabilities related to different climatic indices. In the Pallid Swift, wintering in Western Africa, the Sahel rainfall index best explained survival, with driest seasons associated with reduced survival. In the Common Swift, wintering in SE Africa, the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle performed significantly better than Sahel rainfall or North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Extreme events and precipitation anomalies in Eastern Africa during La Niña events resulted in reduced survival probabilities in Common Swifts. Our study shows that the two species of swifts have similar average annual survival, but their survival varies between years and is strongly affected by different climatic drivers associated with their respective wintering areas. This finding could suggest important ecological diversification that should be taken into account when comparing survival and area use of similar species that migrate between temperate breeding areas and tropical wintering areas. Biological rhythms of nearly all animals on earth are synchronized with natural light and are aligned to day‐and‐night transitions. Here, we test the hypothesis that the lunar cycle affects the nocturnal flight activity of European Nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus). We describe daily activity patterns of individuals from three different countries across a wide geographic area, during two discrete periods in the annual cycle. Although the sample size for two of our study sites is small, the results are clear in that on average individual flight activity was strongly correlated with both local variation in day length and with the lunar cycle. The term "fracture cascade" refers to the sequence of fragility fractures resulting from the increased fracture risk that occurs with aging and following fractures. Here, we evaluate the sequence of previous fractures in women aged 55 to 90 years presenting with a fragility fracture and subsequent (12 to 24 months) fracture incidence. In this retrospective, observational study, women aged 55 to 90 years with an "index" fragility fracture in 2013 were identified from Swedish national registries. A history of previous fractures (2001 to 2012) and osteoporosis treatment was used to characterize fracture cascade patterns. Cumulative incidence of new fractures within 12 to 24 months following the index fracture, based on index fracture type and age, were used to describe the risk of subsequent fractures. A total of 35,146 women with a mean age of 73.8 years were included (7180 hip, 2786 clinical vertebral, and 25,180 nonhip/nonvertebral [NHNV] index fractures); 38% of women with hip, 38% with clinical vertebral, and 25% with NHNV index fractures had one or more previous fractures. Across all index fracture types, the proportion of women with any previous fracture increased with age; 34% to 46% of index hip or clinical vertebral fractures in women ≥70 years were not their first fracture. Following any index fracture, cumulative incidence of a new fracture over 24 months was over 11% (index clinical vertebral 18%; index hip 14%). Osteoporosis treatment rates were low both in patients with (27%) and without (18%) a previous fracture. These descriptive data demonstrate that almost one‐third of women aged 55 to 90 years suffering a new fracture have had a previous fragility fracture. Fracture location influences incidence and type of subsequent fracture during the 24 months following a fragility fracture, with clinical vertebral fractures carrying the greatest imminent fracture risk. Background: In 2001, the EU nickel directive was introduced to prevent contact allergy to nickel. Contact allergy to palladium and/or cobalt is often seen together with contact allergy to nickel. Objectives: To compare the contact allergy prevalence of nickel, palladium, and cobalt allergy before and after the introduction of the EU nickel directive in consecutive patients with dermatitis. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patch test results from 1995–2016 was performed (n = 18 264). Chi‐square tests were used to examine trends for nickel, palladium, and cobalt across test years. Logistic regression was used for associations. Results: The prevalence of nickel allergy decreased significantly in the youngest age group (6–30 years) for both female and male patients from 1995–1999 to 2012–2016: females: 33.4% to 19.1% (P <.001); males: 5.9% to 2.1% (P <.05). The concomitant reactions between nickel and palladium and nickel and cobalt among young females, respectively, also decreased significantly. Isolated palladium and cobalt allergy remained stable (1.4% and 2.3%, respectively) during the same time period for both men and women. Conclusions: The prevalence of nickel has decreased among young females and males suspected of contact allergy in Southern Sweden after the introduction of the EU nickel directive. Summary: When treating limited stage classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), balancing treatment efficacy and toxicity is important. Toxicities after extended‐field radiotherapy are well documented. Investigators have aimed at reducing toxicity without compromising efficacy, mainly by using combined modality treatment (CMT), i.e. chemotherapy and limited‐field radiotherapy. In some clinical trials, radiotherapy has been omitted. We evaluated 364 patients with stage I‐IIA cHL treated between 1999 and 2005. Patients were treated with two or four cycles of doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine (ABVD) according to presence of risk factors, followed by 30 Gy limited‐field (reduced compared to involved‐field) radiotherapy. After a median follow‐up of 16 years for survival, freedom from progression at five and ten years was 93% and overall survival at 5 and 10 years was 98% and 96%, respectively. Only two relapses, out of 27, occurred after more than 5 years. There was no excess mortality compared to the general population. Of the analysed subgroups, only patients with progression within five years showed significant excess mortality. The absence of excess mortality questions the concept of omitting radiotherapy after short‐term chemotherapy, a strategy that has been associated with an elevated risk of relapse but not yet with a proven reduced long‐term excess mortality. It is essential to gain knowledge about the causes and extent of migratory connectivity between stationary periods of migrants to further the understanding of processes affecting populations, and to allow efficient implementation of conservation efforts throughout the annual cycle. Avian migrants likely use optimal routes with respect to mode of locomotion, orientation and migration strategy, influenced by external factors such as wind and topography. In self‐powered flapping flying birds, any increases in fuel loads are associated with added flight costs. Energy‐minimizing migrants are therefore predicted to trade‐off extended detours against reduced travel across ecological barriers with no or limited foraging opportunities.Here, we quantify the extent of detours taken by different populations of European nightjars Caprimulgus europaeus, to test our predictions that they used routes beneficial according to energetic principles and evaluate the effect of route shape on seasonal migratory connectivity.We combined data on birds tracked from breeding sites along a longitudinal gradient from England to Sweden. We analysed the migratory connectivity between breeding and main non‐breeding sites, and en route stopover sites just south of the Sahara desert. We quantified each track's route extension relative to the direct route between breeding and wintering sites, respectively, and contrasted it to the potential detour derived from the barrier reduction along the track while accounting for potential wind effects.Nightjars extended their tracks from the direct route between breeding and main non‐breeding sites as they crossed the Mediterranean Sea–Sahara desert, the major ecological barrier in the Palaearctic–African migration system. These clockwise detours were small for birds from eastern sites but increased from east to west breeding longitude. Routes of the tracked birds were associated with partial reduction in the barrier crossing resulting in a trade‐off between route extension and barrier reduction, as expected in an energy‐minimizing migrant.This study demonstrates how the costs of barrier crossings in prevailing winds can disrupt migratory routes towards slightly different goals, and thereby promote migratory connectivity. Background: Co-exposure to environmental contaminants present in fish could mitigate the beneficial effects of fish consumption and possibly explain the lack of association observed for mortality in some geographical regions.Objective: To assess the independent associations of dietary exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and long-chain omega-3 fish fatty acids intake with cardiovascular and cancer mortality.Methods: We used the prospective population-based Swedish Mammography Cohort and the Cohort of Swedish Men comprising 32 952 women and 36 545 men, free from cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes at baseline in 1998. Validated estimates of dietary PCBs and long-chain omega-3 fish fatty acids [i.e. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] intake were obtained via a food frequency questionnaire at baseline. Information on death was ascertained through register linkage.Results: During a mean follow-up of 15.5 years, we ascertained 16 776 deaths. We observed for cardiovascular mortality, comparing extreme quintiles in multivariable models mutually adjusted for PCBs and EPA-DHA, dose-dependent associations for dietary PCB exposure, hazard ratio (HR) 1.31 (CI 95%: 1.08 to 1.57; P-trend 0.005) and for dietary EPA-DHA intake, HR 0.79 (CI 95%: 0.66 to 0.95; P-trend 0.041). For cancer mortality, no clear associations were discerned.Conclusion: The beneficial effect of fish consumption on the cardiovascular system seems compromised by co-exposure to PCBs - one likely explanation for the inconsistent associations observed between fish consumption and mortality. Osteoporosis‐related fractures are undertreated, due in part to misinformation about recommended approaches to patient care and discrepancies among treatment guidelines. To help bridge this gap and improve patient outcomes, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research assembled a multistakeholder coalition to develop clinical recommendations for the optimal prevention of secondary fracture among people aged 65 years and older with a hip or vertebral fracture. The coalition developed 13 recommendations (7 primary and 6 secondary) strongly supported by the empirical literature. The coalition recommends increased communication with patients regarding fracture risk, mortality and morbidity outcomes, and fracture risk reduction. Risk assessment (including fall history) should occur at regular intervals with referral to physical and/or occupational therapy as appropriate. Oral, intravenous, and subcutaneous pharmacotherapies are efficacious and can reduce risk of future fracture. Patients need education, however, about the benefits and risks of both treatment and not receiving treatment. Oral bisphosphonates alendronate and risedronate are first‐line options and are generally well tolerated; otherwise, intravenous zoledronic acid and subcutaneous denosumab can be considered. Anabolic agents are expensive but may be beneficial for selected patients at high risk. Optimal duration of pharmacotherapy is unknown but because the risk for second fractures is highest in the early post‐fracture period, prompt treatment is recommended. Adequate dietary or supplemental vitamin D and calcium intake should be assured. Individuals being treated for osteoporosis should be reevaluated for fracture risk routinely, including via patient education about osteoporosis and fractures and monitoring for adverse treatment effects. Patients should be strongly encouraged to avoid tobacco, consume alcohol in moderation at most, and engage in regular exercise and fall prevention strategies. Finally, referral to endocrinologists or other osteoporosis specialists may be warranted for individuals who experience repeated fracture or bone loss and those with complicating comorbidities (eg, hyperparathyroidism, chronic kidney disease). © 2019 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is an essential neurotrophic factor for the development and maintenance of the central and the peripheral nervous system. NGF deficiency in the basal forebrain precedes degeneration of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons in Alzheimer's disease, contributing to memory decline. NGF mediates neurotrophic support via its high‐affinity receptor, the tropomyosin‐related kinase A (TrkA) receptor, and mediates mitogenic and differentiation signals via the extracellular signal‐regulated protein kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the different NGF/TrkA/ERK signalling pathways are far from clear. In this study, we have investigated the role of human NGF and three NGF mutants, R100E, W99A and K95A/Q96A, their ability to activate TrkA or ERK1/2, and their ability to induce proliferation or differentiation in human foetal dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons or in PC12 cells. We show that the R100E mutant was significantly more potent than NGF itself to induce proliferation and differentiation, and significantly more potent in activation of ERK1/2 in DRG neurons. The W99A and K95A/Q96A mutants, on the other hand, were less effective than the wild‐type protein. An unexpected finding was the high efficacy of the K95A/Q96A mutant to activate TrkA and to induce differentiation of DRG neurons at elevated concentrations. These data demonstrate an NGF mutant with improved neurotrophic properties in primary human neuronal cells. Objective: To investigate the causal role of cardiometabolic risk factors in osteoarthritis (OA) using associated genetic variants. Methods: We studied 27,691 adults from the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study (MDCS) and replicated novel findings among 376,435 adults from the UK Biobank. Trait‐specific polygenic risk scores for low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) and high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels, and systolic blood pressure (BP) were used to test the associations of genetically predicted elevations in each trait with incident OA diagnosis (n = 3,559), OA joint replacement (n = 2,780), or both (total OA; n = 4,226) in Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses in the MDCS, and with self‐reported and/or hospital‐diagnosed OA (n = 65,213) in the UK Biobank. Multivariable MR, MR‐Egger, and weighted median MR were used to adjust for potential pleiotropic biases. Results: In the MDCS, genetically predicted elevation in LDL cholesterol level was associated with a lower risk of OA diagnosis (odds ratio [OR] 0.83 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.73–0.95] per 1SD increase) and total OA (OR 0.87 [95% CI 0.78–0.98]), which was supported by multivariable MR for OA diagnosis (OR 0.84 [95% CI 0.75–0.95]) and total OA (0.87 [95% CI 0.78–0.97]), and by conventional 2‐sample MR for OA diagnosis (OR 0.86 [95% CI 0.75–0.98]). MR‐Egger indicated no pleiotropic bias. Genetically predicted elevation in BMI was associated with an increased risk of OA diagnosis (OR 1.65 [95% CI 1.14–2.41]), while MR‐Egger indicated pleiotropic bias and a larger association with OA diagnosis (OR 3.25 [1.26–8.39]), OA joint replacement (OR 3.81 [95% CI 1.39–10.4]), and total OA (OR 3.41 [95% CI 1.43–8.15]). No associations were observed between genetically predicted HDL cholesterol level, triglyceride level, FPG level, or systolic BP and OA outcomes. The associations with LDL cholesterol levels were replicated in the UK Biobank (OR 0.95 [95% CI 0.93–0.98]). With timely allocated movement phases, mobile organisms can match their space‐use with the seasonality of the environment and thereby optimise their resource utilisation over time. Long‐distance avian migrants are known to move with the seasonal dynamics on an annual basis, but how individuals respond to seasonality within their tropical non‐breeding range has been less studied. Here we analyse the movement pattern of a highly mobile aerial insectivorous bird, the pallid swift Apus pallidus, and its association with the local habitat phenology during the non‐breeding period, using individual‐based light‐level geolocation. We extracted timing and location of 21 birds' residence periods, as well as characteristics of the intervening movements, such as distance and speed. We used time series of precipitation and vegetation data for each residence area to extract the timing of the local end of the rainy season and the onset of the dry season. The pallid swifts repeatedly upgraded their habitat by undertaking 2–5 intra‐tropical migrations correlated with the withdrawal of the rains and the onset of the local dry season. The birds arrived to the sites on average 12 days after rains ended and departed about two weeks after the onset of dry season suggesting that the birds closely tracked a spatiotemporal window presumably timed with optimal foraging conditions. Our results provide insights in the ways Palaearctic–African migrants respond to the asynchronous phenology within their sub‐Saharan non‐breeding range. We confirmed that pallid swifts actively respond to deteriorating conditions by repeated upgrades in habitat quality, which likely have substantial consequences for an individual's access to an essential, spatiotemporally ephemeral food resource. However, the pallid swifts did not surf an apparent resource wave per se as would be expected in a highly mobile species, indicating that also other factors, such as spatial patchiness of resources, may influence the movement decision.
