Improving energy efficiency by adjusting the structure of energy consumption types is of great significance for reducing carbon emissions in the short term. The present paper constructs new data envelopment analysis models for evaluating energy utilization under different structural conditions and calculating potential emissions reductions. We conducted empirical research on 30 provinces in China from 2003 to 2019—a time frame that coincides with the instituting of China's “coal‐to‐gas” program. Our results show that technological progress is the main way for China to reduce carbon emissions and that it is possible to reduce the total amount of carbon emissions by 35%. Additionally, optimizing the energy consumption structure following the coal‐to‐gas program guidelines could reduce the country's carbon emissions by a further 25%. Finally, this paper provides specific policy recommendations based on the efficiency analysis results to guide each province in reducing carbon emissions under the conditions of energy demand growth. Improving green productivity (GP) is critical for achieving global sustainable green development. Yet, past efficiency studies on the African continent have ignored Africa's GP, estimation, and driving factors. Specifically, the role of sovereign debt vulnerability, environmental entrepreneurship, and institutional quality in ensuring Africa's green productivity development is lacking. Therefore, this study built a meta‐frontier biennial weighted modified data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to evaluate green productivity across resource‐intensive and non‐resource‐intensive African countries from 2010 to 2019. Further, the study adopted the global Malmquist‐Luenberger productivity index (GML) to investigate the dynamic changes in African green productivity growth. The results suggest that only a few African countries are efficient, implying more room for improvement for the other countries. The heterogeneity of green productivity across the resource's classification exhibits significant disparity. The technology gap also prevails among the two resource classifications of African countries. The GML index indicates that Africa's green productivity is mainly explained by technical change instead of efficiency change. The bootstrap truncation regression suggests an inverted U‐shaped nexus between growth and green productivity in Africa and resource‐intensive countries (RIC). Green environmental entrepreneurship positively affects green productivity in Africa. On the components of institutional quality, we observed that the rule of law positively influences green productivity in non‐resource‐intensive countries (NRIC) and the whole of Africa. In contrast, political stability, government effectiveness, voice and corruption negatively affected green productivity in NRIC. Also, foreign direct investment (FDI) and sovereign debt vulnerability negatively correlate to green productivity in Africa as a whole and NRIC, respectively. Enantiomeric excess (ee) is an essential indicator of chiral drug purification in the pharmaceutical industry. However, to date the ee determination of unknown concentration enantiomers generally involves two separate techniques for chirality and concentration measurement. Here, a whispering‐gallery mode (WGM) based optofluidic microlaser near exceptional point to achieve the ee determination under unknown concentration with a single technique is proposed. Exceptional point induces the unidirectional WGM lasing, providing the optofluidic microlaser with the novel capability to measure chirality by polarization, in addition to wavelength‐based concentration detection. The dual‐parameters detection of optofluidic microlaser empowers it to achieve ee determination of various unknown enantiomers without additional concentration measurements, a feat that is challenging to accomplish with other methods. Featuring the sensitivity enhancement and miniature structure of the WGM sensors, the obtained chiroptical response of the present approach is ≈30‐fold higher than that of the conventional optical rotation‐based polarimeter, and the reagent consumption is reduced by three orders of magnitude. Oncogene E6 plays a critical role in the development and progression of esophageal cancer caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Alpha‐ketoglutarate (AKG) is a key metabolite in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and has been widely used as a dietary and anti‐ageing supplement. In this study, we found that treating esophageal squamous carcinoma cells with a high dose of AKG can induce cell pyroptosis. Furthermore, our research confirms that HPV18 E6 inhibits AKG‐induced pyroptosis of esophageal squamous carcinoma cells by lowering P53 expression. P53 downregulates malate dehydrogenase 1 (MDH1) expression; however, MDH1 downregulates L‐2‐hydroxyglutarate (L‐2HG) expression, which inhibits a rise in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels—as L‐2HG is responsible for excessive ROS. This study reveals the actuating mechanism behind cell pyroptosis of esophageal squamous carcinoma cells induced by high concentrations of AKG, and we posit the molecular pathway via which the HPV E6 oncoprotein inhibits cell pyroptosis. In this paper, a novel ionic liquid plasticizer, 1‐methyl‐4‐methoxyethyl‐1,2,4‐triazole dicyanamide ([MMET][DCA]), was synthesized and characterized. The effect of [MMET][DCA] on the viscous flow properties of HTPB was studied, and then the effect of [MMET][DCA] on the mechanical and thermal properties of the HTPB/TDI curing system was further explored. The results show that the hydrogen bond between [MMET][DCA] and HTPB has a significant effect on the viscosity of HTPB. In the HTPB/TDI curing system, when the di(2‐ethylhexyl)adipate (DEHA) was replaced by an equal amount of [MMET][DCA], the glass transition temperature did not change significantly; the tensile strength of the curing system increased from 0.436 MPa to 0.474 Mpa; the elongation at break increased from 506.2 % to 700.4 %, and the decomposition temperature at 5 % and 10 % mass loss increased by 32 °C and 70 °C, respectively. Background: Natural orifice specimen extraction (NOSE) surgery has been widely implemented in colorectal cancer surgery due to its good short‐term efficacy. However, anastomotic leakage (AL) is a serious postoperative complication in colorectal cancer, and the risk factors for this complication after NOSE surgery have rarely been investigated. The aim of this study was to explore the predictive factors for AL after laparoscopic resection with transrectal NOSE for rectal cancer and sigmoid colon cancer. Methods: A total of 208 patients who underwent total laparoscopic resection with transrectal NOSE for rectal cancer and sigmoid colon cancer from January 2014 to June 2019 were systematically reviewed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the relevant risk factors. Results: The rate of AL was 10.1% (21 of 208 patients). The univariate analyses showed that male sex (85.7% vs 57.8%, P =.013), the distance from the anal verge (10.5 vs 14.5 cm, P =.011), and a duration of operation ≥140 min (71.4% vs 29.4%, P<.001) were associated with an increased incidence of AL. The multivariate analysis showed that a duration of operation ≥140 min (OR = 5427, 95% CI = 1.355‐21.727, P =.017) was an independent risk factor for AL. Conclusion: A duration of operation ≥140 min is a possible risk factor for AL after total laparoscopic resection with transrectal NOSE for colorectal cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the quest for economic and social prosperity, countries all over the world are constantly engaged in energy consumption to propel development. The utilization of energy emits dangerous greenhouse gases which have adverse impact on human health and the entire ecosystem. Finding the trade‐off that exists between economic growth and environmental protection is essential nowadays. Previous energy efficiency studies in Africa have focused on static efficiency and ignoring dynamic implications of crossover factors in productivity. Those studies in Africa have also failed to capture energy efficiency trends and patterns over time. Therefore, the current study applies the dynamic slack‐based measure (DSBM) in a data envelopment analysis (DEA) framework to assess the dynamic energy efficiency of 25 sampled African economies from 2007 to 2014 by adopting energy stock as carryover factors. Further, the study investigates the inputs, output, and carryover factors inefficiency in the model to identify the potential areas where inefficiencies occurred. The empirical results suggest that these selected African countries are far from being energy efficient (0.519). Therefore, both adjustments and projections on the inputs, output, and carryover variables should be taken into account, to improve efficiency. Environmental regulation has been recognized as an important way to directly improve environmental performance or indirectly impact environmental performance through increasing environmental innovation. The present paper constructs an energy and carbon emission total factor productivity index using the Malmquist–Luenberger productivity index and data envelopment analysis. The proposed technique is used to measure the environmental performance of 30 Chinese provinces during the period 2010–2015. The energy and carbon emission total factor productivity measure is divided into a pure technical efficiency index and a technical progress index to provide detailed environmental performance information. Then an ordinary least squares model is adopted to analyse the impact of environmental regulation on environmental innovation operation and environmental performance by hypothesis testing. The empirical results show that environmental regulation and environmental innovation have positive direct effects on environmental performance and that market‐based environmental regulation has a positive indirect effect on environmental performance by increasing environmental innovation. Background and Aim: Avoiding abdominal incisions is one of the unique features of natural orifice specimen extraction (NOSE) surgery. There has been no consensus on whether the avoidance of abdominal incisions can reduce the systemic inflammatory response after NOSE surgery. This study was designed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of transanal NOSE, especially the inflammatory response after transanal NOSE versus mini‐laparotomy (LAP). Methods: A total of 172 colorectal cancer patients who underwent transanal NOSE were matched with 172 patients who underwent LAP for colorectal cancer. Clinical characteristics, pathological features, perioperative parameters, and indicators of the inflammatory response were collected and compared. The inflammatory response was assessed by measuring body temperature, neutrophil count, C‐reactive protein levels, and procalcitonin levels. Results: Patients in the NOSE group had better short‐term outcomes, such as lower incidence of wound infection, less postoperative pain, less need for anesthetic drugs, and faster recovery of intestinal function. Regarding the inflammatory response, the average body temperature of patients in the NOSE group was higher on postoperative day (POD) 2 than that in the LAP group. A higher median neutrophil count and C‐reactive protein levels were observed in the NOSE group on POD3 and POD5 than was observed in the LAP group. Conclusions: Transanal NOSE is safe and feasible for colorectal cancer, with better short‐term outcomes. Although transanal NOSE produced a larger systemic inflammatory response than LAP in the early postoperative stages, this response did not appear to translate into infectious morbidity. Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (<2.5 μm; PM2.5) increases the risk of the physiopathology of vascular diseases. However, the underlying mechanism, particularly the mitochondrial damage mechanism, of PM2.5‐induced vascular dysfunction is still unclear. In this study, we examined PM2.5‐induced alterations of mitochondrial morphology, and further demonstrated the adverse effects on mitochondrial dynamics and function in vascular endothelial cells. Consequently, cultured EA.hy926 cells were subjected to PM2.5 collected from Beijing. A Cell Counting Assay Kit‐8 demonstrated that PM2.5 exposure decreased the proliferation of EA.hy926 cells in a dose‐dependent manner. The exposure caused an increment of abnormal mitochondria coupled with the decrease of fusion protein MFN2 and the increase of fission protein FIS1, suggesting that PM2.5 inhibits mitochondrial fusion. Further analyses revealed PM2.5 decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and increased the mitochondrial permeability transport pore opening, eventually resulting in impairments in adenosine triphosphate synthesis. Therefore, it is clearly shown that PM2.5 triggered endothelial toxicity through mitochondria as the target, including the damage of mitochondrial homeostasis.
