Abstract

This study aims to make a significant contribution to the development of a model for integrating research in the wine sector, innovative knowledge, and family businesses with the traditional mode of production in the context of the introduction of modern production technologies with a view to sustainability and the improvement of services in tourism. From a methodological point of view, the research is based on the case study and, in particular, on Casa Paladin, a family business in the Italian wine sector, which bases its strategy on innovation in production processes and customer relations to obtain high product quality with the aim of meeting consumer needs. The findings underscore the crucial role of family businesses in preserving cultural and traditional elements in the wine sector, with technology and innovation serving as vital drivers for their development. Casa Paladin's commitment to innovation in production processes and products is evident, emphasizing sustainability as a core element that impacts customer relationships and product quality. Enotourism, including tastings, festivals, and fairs, emerges as a significant aspect contributing to the promotion of the company's history, culture, and traditions. This study posits Casa Paladin as a notable example in the Italian wine industry, offering transferable insights for other businesses. Its successful integration of culture, innovation, and sustainability contributes to a broader understanding of the contemporary role of family businesses in the Italian wine sector. 11. What do we know about ESG and risk? A systematic and bibliometric review.

Abstract

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues have become particularly relevant in the agendas of policymakers, investment decisions by companies and asset allocation process of investors. However, the transition to a greener and more sustainable economic system is not without risks. The literature has investigated the relationship between ESG and risk in different ways, through multiple perspectives and approaches. We select all documents with "ESG" and "Risk" in the title, abstracts and keywords available in Scopus and, after removing non‐relevant papers, we are left with a sample of 589 documents published in the period 1983–2022. To provide a view of the most important studies, we also focus on the most cited documents to discuss the methodological approaches and main results. The results show that over time, ESG has gained increasing attention from the literature, but researchers work in isolation and there is no single approach or leading core topic driving academic productivity; a clear taxonomy of ESG risks appears to be missing. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to discuss research on ESG and risk from a financial perspective. The results highlight some existing gaps in the literature that can provide a hint for the development of the topic by researchers. These include a clearer taxonomy of ESG risks that can affect investors' and companies' decisions, a greater effort to evaluate how ESG risks distribute and spill from one sector to another and the inclusion of emerging economies and small and medium‐sized enterprises in the samples. 15. Evaluation of Railway Systems: A Network Approach

Abstract

Resilience and the efficiency of transportation systems are crucial for the economic development of geographical areas, and network analysis applied to railways can provide insight into the importance of branch lines and their impacts on the entire system. This paper explores the behavior of the ERC measure, a local robustness measure, on the railway network in Lombardy, Italy, and analyzes the impacts of deactivating stations or journeys on the network’s robustness. Changes in the topological properties of the network were studied by simulating potential external disturbances and analyzing the impact of deleting the most connected stations or railway lines. The numerical results show how the measures provided effectively identify critical stations and journeys within the network structure and outperform classical topological metrics. Since ERC measures take into account all of the alternative paths present in the network, they can provide valuable information for rerouting traffic along alternative paths in case of failures or disruptions. The paper’s original contribution lies in demonstrating the effectiveness of the ERC measure in identifying critical stations and journeys within the network structure.

Abstract

I musei, durante il lockdown, hanno dovuto utilizzare nuovi strumenti e tecniche per promuovere l’arte, trasformando così il digitale nel “new normal del beneficio culturale”. Il crescente utilizzo delle mostre online e l’apertura di piattaforme sui social network, già presenti nel panorama prima della pandemia ma in modo molto ridotto, ha permesso agli interessati di prendere parte ad eventi interattivi e personalizzati. L’impegno dei musei, quindi, è stato quello di attivare e promuovere sempre di più la loro attività sui social network e siti web in modo tale che anche le persone che si trovano dall’altra parte del mondo possano lo stesso fruire delle proposte museali italiane. Attraverso una analisi di dati primari e secondari viene investigata la partecipazione e la tipologia dei visitatori ante e post Virus Covid-19. Un approfondimento, riguardante il periodo di chiusura, focalizzerà l’attenzione su tutte le attività svolte dai musei rispetto la loro virtuale apertura al pubblico con percorsi personalizzati e interattivi per la visione di mostre. 35. NPO Funding in Italy: The Role and the Contribution of Corporate Governance

Abstract

By adopting mainly the “principal-agent theory”, the study analyses how non-profit organizations (NPOs) corporate governance structure could increase the trust of the donors and therefore affect their ability to receive donations from taxpayers. Starting from a literature review we concentrated our attention on the non-profit sector where NGOs represent the largest category. In Italy, starting from 2006, all NPOs could receive funding deriving from taxes paid by citizens when making tax returns with the so called ‘5 per thousand’ of the personal income tax. We analyzed the corporate governance disclosure practices of the first Italian 100 NPOs that received the highest donations from 5 per thousand. In particular, we elaborated a CGI index that includes governance and informativeness. This paper shows how an efficient and transparent corporate governance structure motivates the donors to donate 5 per thousand to NPOs that demonstrate good corporate governance. The findings suggest that taxpayers are inclined to allocate 5 per thousand to organizations where the information level, from a governance point of view, is high, easily available and clear about the purpose in the specified field of research.

Abstract

To determine the acute effects on respiratory function of children exposed to sulphur dioxide (SO2), we conducted two population-based longitudinal investigations near a major oil refinery. We enrolled 233 children, age 8–14, in Sarroch (Italy). The first study entailed five monthly spirometric visits (Panel 5). In a subgroup, children positive for history of respiratory symptoms were tested weekly (20 times) with spirometry and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurement (Panel 20). Baseline questionnaires and daily diaries were recorded. SO2, NO2, PM10 and O3 were measured by monitoring stations. Multiple regression models were fitted. Using a multipollutant model, we found that a 10 µg/m3 SO2 increase at lag0–2 days determined a percent variation (PV) of −3.37 (90% confidence interval, CI: −5.39, −1.30) for forced expiratory volume after one second (FEV1) in Panel 5 and a PV = −3.51 (90% CI: −4.77, −2.23) in Panel 20. We found a strong dose-response relation: 1-h SO2 peaks &gt, 200 µg/m3 at lag2 days = FEV1 PV −2.49. For FeNO, we found a PV = 38.12 (90% CI: 12.88, 69.01) for each 10 µg/m3 SO2 increase at 8-h time lag and a strong dose-response relation. Exposure to SO2 is strongly associated with reduction of lung function and an increase in airway inflammation. This new evidence of harmful effects of SO2 peaks should induce regulatory intervention.
