This paper presents a thorough review of transmitarray devices particularly aiming antenna beamsteering, gathering some of the most relevant solutions published by the scientific community in the field. First, the background for realizing 1-D and 2-D antenna beamsteering with a transmitarray is introduced. Subsequently, several examples of unit-cells for transmitarray implementation and complete transmitarray designs presented in the literature are outlined. Each solution is analyzed in detail, identifying the nature of its layout, e.g., based on microstrip patches, frequency selective surfaces (FSS), or metamaterials (MMs), and the method employed to enable electronic reconfigurability, e.g., p-i-n diodes, varactor diodes, or microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). In addition, some models with the capability of controlling the wavefront polarization modes are also included herein since these are the base of hybrid transmitarrays, i.e., transmitarray with both electronic beamsteering and polarization control. Finally, all the models are compared against each other in order to highlight their benefits and limitations, summarizing their main characteristics, such as the frequency of operation and bandwidth, insertion loss, physical dimensions, and maximum beamsteering range, when available.

The paper ' Zur Dynamik elastisch gekoppelter Punktsysteme ' by Schrödinger (1914) does not seem to have attracted the attention that it deserves. We translate it into English here and we discuss its results in detail, with a view to its possible influence in the modern theories of generalised continua. The clever solution found, in terms of Bessel functions, by Schrödinger of the problem of the vibrations of a linear infinite chain of molecules gives some important methodological hints for contemporary research. Kirigami, the ancient art of paper cutting, has evolved into a design and fabrication framework to engineer multi‐functional materials and structures at vastly different scales. By slit cutting with carefully designed geometries, desirable mechanical behaviors—such as accurate shape morphing, tunable auxetics, super‐stretchability, buckling, and multistability—can be imparted to otherwise inflexible sheet materials. In addition, the kirigami sheet provides a versatile platform for embedding different electronic and responsive components, opening up avenues for building the next generations of metamaterials, sensors, and soft robotics. These promising potentials of kirigami‐based engineering have inspired vigorous research activities over the past few years, generating many academic publications. Therefore, this review aims to provide insights into the recent advance in this vibrant field. In particular, this paper offers the first comprehensive survey of unique mechanical properties induced by kirigami cutting, their underlying physical principles, and their corresponding applications. A Xi-shaped meta structure, has been introduced in this paper. A modified split-ring resonator (MSRR) and a capacitive loaded strip (CLS) were used to achieve the left-handed property of the metamaterial. The structure was printed using silver metallic nanoparticle ink, using a very low-cost photo paper as a substrate material. Resonators were inkjet-printed using silver nanoparticle metallic ink on paper to make this metamaterial flexible. It is also free from any kind of chemical waste, which makes it eco-friendly. A double negative region from 8.72 GHz to 10.91 GHz (bandwidth of 2.19 GHz) in the X-band microwave spectra was been found. Figure of merit was also obtained to measure any loss in the double negative region. The simulated result was verified by the performance of the fabricated prototype. The total dimensions of the proposed structure were 0.29λ x 0.29 λ x 0.007 λ. It is a promising unit cell because of its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and easy fabrication process. In this paper, Ag/paper-based composites with low dielectric loss were obtained by introduce the concept of metamaterial into the fabrication process. In this kind of metacomposite, single-layer paper was used as basic block to build up a matrix with sandwich structure, in which Ag particles are embedded and silver particles are evenly distributed. The microstructure and phase composition were characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The impedance spectrum of the composites in 20 Hz–1 MHz region was measured by using LCR Meter, which can be well fitted by equivalent circuit method. The results show that, compared to the composite in which Ag particles disorder distributed, the dielectric loss of the layer-by-layer structured metacomposite can be effectively reduced (tan θ ≤ 0.1), without negative effect on the dielectric constant. Moreover, the dielectric properties of metacomposites show obvious anisotropy in the horizontal and vertical directions, which might give a feasible way for flexible smart material in its design. Kirigami is an art of paper cutting, which can be used in mechanical metamaterials, actuators, and energy absorption based on its deployable and load-deflection characteristics. Traditional cuts with zero width produce undesirable plastic deformation or even tear fracture due to stress concentration in stretching. This study proposes to enlarge the cut width into a notch flexure, which is applied to an orthogonality-cutted kirigami sheet, which buckles out of plane into a 3D configuration patterns under uniaxial tension. The use of compliant beam as the notch makes the stress distribution around the cuts more uniform in both elastic and elastoplastic regime. The experimental and numerical results show that by tuning the geometric parameters of cuts and material properties of the sheets, the trigger condition of 3D patterns can be adjusted. Potential capability of tunable phononic wave propagation in this kirigami-inspired metamaterial is demonstrated. This design methodology offers a theoretical guide for kirigami-based structures. The Japanese art of paper folding called origami has underlying principles that can help in the development of complex metamaterial structures. The purpose of the paper is to design, model, and analyze a feasible, more sustainable impact absorbing structure. There has been continuous development in the field of space science and aerodynamics, which has led us to encounter a lot of challenges. One of such challenges is smooth landing of objects. We started by creating tessellations with the help of Miura ori fold to get a repeating structure of the TCO (Triangulated Cylindrical Origami) with an aim to create a general-purpose design for Impact absorbing applications. A comparison between origami TCO’s sheets, hexagonal sandwich sheets, and cardboard corrugated sheets was made. The TCO cells are better at absorbing energy absorption due to their physical structure. The result shows that the Origami TCO sheets exceed the traditional honeycomb and corrugated sheets. As the model we developed is a general-purpose design, it can be upscaled or downscaled depending on its required application, which can range from nano technology to space technology. The design of unit cell metamaterial can tailor the permittivity and permeability. The negative refractive index was achieved while the negative real part of permittivity and negative real part of permeability simultaneously or εrμi+εiμr<0 conditions were satisfied, where εr,εi,μrandμiare real part of permittivity, imaginary part of permittivity, real part of permeability, and imaginary part of permeability, respectively. Currently, the metamaterial based on paper is a fascinating issue. Additional, paper is used as dielectric due to its eco‐friendly spacer. The unit cell design is the critical rule for achieving high figure of merit (FoM) of negative refractive index. This work aims to design the high FoM cylinder‐shaped negative refractive index metamaterial based on paper as the dielectric material. The cylinder‐shaped structure was simulated by CST microwave studio. The electromagnetic properties of the cylinder‐shaped structure were estimated from the scattering parameter (S‐parameter) result. The cylinder‐shaped structure yields high FoM of negative refractive index performance. The negative refractive index was generated at 3.4–3.91 GHz. This document is an editorial on the special issue "Metamaterials and Plasmonics in Asia" in the journal Nanophotonics. It highlights the importance of metamaterials and plasmonics in the field of nanophotonics and their expansion from the microwave frequency region to the entire optical range. The editorial also mentions the increasing number of publications on metamaterials research, with over 7000 papers published in 2023. The special issue includes five review articles and 20 original papers, covering various topics such as programmable optical meta-holograms, inverse design techniques for photonic crystal structures, and thermal emission control by metasurface technologies. A passive, low‐cost, paper‐based intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is designed to reflect a signal in a desired direction to overcome non‐line‐of‐sight scenarios in indoor environments. The IRS is fabricated using conductive silver ink printed on paper with a specific nanoparticle arrangement, yielding a cost‐effective paper‐based IRS that can easily be mass‐produced. Full‐wave numerical simulation results were consistent with measurement results, demonstrating the IRS's ability to reflect incident waves into a desired nonspecular direction based on the inkjet‐printed design and materials. Increasing attention is being paid to the application potential of multi-functional reconfigurable metamaterials in intelligent communication, sensor networks, homeland security, and other fields. A polarization-independent multi-functional reconfigurable metasurface based on doped vanadium dioxide (VO2) is proposed in this paper. It can be controlled to switch its function among three working modes: electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA), electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), and asymmetrical absorption. In addition, deep learning tools have greatly accelerated the design of relevant devices. Because of poor surface hydrophilicity, meta-aramid fibers readily form flocs by intertwining or interlacing, and this severely affects the uniformity of meta-aramid paper. To investigate the flocculation mechanism of meta-aramid fiber suspensions, the critical flocculant concentration, shear, and compressive network strength of meta-aramid fiber suspensions were examined. A hand sheet former was used to study the influence of the yielding properties of suspensions on the uniformity of meta-aramid paper, and the relationship between the formation index and rheological properties was determined. The results showed that the critical gel concentration ranged from 0.37 to 0.68 g/L, which was much lower than that of plant fiber suspensions. In addition, the compressive yield stress (P y) and shear yield stress (τ y) of the meta-aramid fiber suspensions were found to increase linearly and exponentially, respectively, with an increasing concentration, and the uniformity index of the paper sheets was found to depend on a power of τ y ⋅ P y. Terahertz (THz) radiation, which has applications in the imaging of objects, nondestructive testing, satellite communication, medical diagnostics, and biosensing, has generated a great deal of attention due to its remarkable properties. This paper proposes a novel broadband filter for THz applications. The main idea is to overcome the insertion loss and bandwidth issues by modeling a frequencydomain finite difference method and guided-mode resonance (GMR). The optimal design scheme of the wideband pass filter based on the circular resonant ring is discussed by comparing the transmission parameters under various parameters. This scheme overcomes the restriction of the narrow passband bandwidth of the prior THz filters and achieves approximately 3 dB bandwidth of 0.54 THz. The proposed THz filter paper also has the advantages of a straightforward structure, low processing costs, and ease of conformal with other structures, and it can be used for stealth fighters, new communication technology, and precise instruments. In addition, when compared to existing models, the suggested filter offers higher 3 dB BW operation, increased transmittance, low insertion loss, and stable performance at various oblique angles. Metamaterials are usually designed using biomimetic technology based on natural biological characteristics or topology optimization based on prior knowledge. Although satisfactory results can be achieved to a certain extent, there are still many performance limitations. For overcoming the above limitations, this paper proposes a rapid metamaterials design method based on the generation of random topological patterns. This method realizes the combined big data simulation and structure optimization of structure-electromagnetic properties, which makes up for the shortcomings of traditional design methods. The electromagnetic properties of the proposed metamaterials are verified by experiments. The reflection coefficient of the designed absorbing metamaterial unit is all lower than −15 dB over 12–16 GHz. Compared with the metal floor, the radar cross section (RCS) of the designed metamaterial is reduced by a minimum of 14.5 dB and a maximum of 27.6 dB over the operating band. The performance parameters of metamaterial obtained based on the random topology design method are consistent with the simulation design results, which further verifies the reliability of the algorithm in this paper. In complex environments, such as mines, ports, and pipelines, wireless power transfer technology is a convenient and safe power supply method. However, the offset and change in direction of the receiving coil greatly weaken the power transfer performance. To address this issue, this paper proposes a variable direction wireless power transfer device for mining based on metamaterials. According to the relationship between incident angle, refracted angle, and permeability, three different metamaterials are selected to fabricate a metamaterial slab arranged in 3 × 3 using printed circuit board technology. Experimental results show that when the transmitting coil and receiving coil are perpendicular to and deviate from each other, the designed power transfer system with the metamaterial slab can effectively increase power transfer by 117.9%. The proposed variable direction transfer system only needs a metamaterial slab without an additional power supply or control structure, and it is convenient for large-scale manufacturing and application. Many countries have a variety of offshore and onshore wind turbines that face extreme aging challenges. Issues with harmful vibrations that must be minimized are addressed in this paper. A new method of wind turbine tower vibration control using piezoelectricity and shunt circuits is proposed in this paper. The passive vibration control method is shown to improve the tower's structural performance under various environmental loads, like wind and seismic excitations. To examine the effectiveness of the suggested shunted piezoelectric system, a simple surrogate finite element model of a wind turbine tower is considered, and various investigations at the second eigenfrequency are carried out. An alternative way of modeling the studied structure is considered and the results demonstrate better performance. The advantages of setting up structural damping systems for decreasing tower vibrational loads and boosting their structural stability and resilience against extreme events are highlighted throughout this work. This paper addresses the pressing scientific problem of accurately predicting the equivalent stiffness of local resonance metamaterial concrete unit cells. Existing theoretical models often fail to capture the nuanced dynamics of these complex systems, resulting in suboptimal predictions and hindering advancements in engineering applications. To address this deficit, this paper proposes a novel two-dimensional theoretical vibration model that incorporates shear stiffness, a crucial yet often overlooked parameter in previous formulations. Motivated by the need for improved predictive accuracy, this paper rigorously validates a new theoretical model through numerical simulations, considering variations in material parameters and geometric dimensions. The analysis reveals several key findings: firstly, the equivalent stiffness increases with elastic modulus while the error rate decreases, holding geometric parameters and Poisson's ratio constant. Secondly, under fixed geometric parameters and coating elastic modulus, the equivalent stiffness rises with an increasing Poisson's ratio, accompanied by a decrease in error rate. Importantly, this paper demonstrates that the proposed model exhibits the lowest error rate across all parameter conditions, facilitating superior prediction of equivalent stiffness. This advancement holds significant implications for the design and optimization of metamaterial structures in various engineering applications for vibration isolation, with promising enhancements of performance and efficiency. Metamaterial is becoming increasingly important owing to its unique physical properties and breakthrough applications. So far, most metamaterials that have been developed are made of rigid materials and structures, which may restrict their practical adaptation performances. Recently, with the further development of liquid metal, some efforts have explored metamaterials based on such tunable electronic inks. Liquid metal has high flexibility and good electrical conductivity, which provides more possibilities for transformable metamaterials. Here, we developed a new flexible liquid-metal metamaterial that is highly reconfigurable and could significantly extend the working limit facing current devices. The printed electronics method was adopted to fabricate artificial units and then construct various potential transformable metamaterials. Based on metamaterial theory and printing technology, typical structured flexible liquid-metal electromagnetic metamaterials were designed and fabricated. The electronic and magnetic characteristics of the liquid-metal-based electromagnetic metamaterials were evaluated through simulated analysis and experimental measurement. Particularly, the potential of liquid-metal metamaterials in biomedical sensing was investigated. Featured Application: In this paper, a metamaterial design based on lightweight geopolymeric elements was reported for applications in acoustic insulation. The paper compares and evaluates the influence of the presence of perforations on the sound absorption coefficient (SAC) of a negative stiffness metamaterial based on a foamed ceramic geopolymer. Chemical–physical, microstructural, dynamic–mechanical, and sound characterisations are presented. A rigid, lightweight geopolymeric porous material has been prepared using an inorganic/organic monomeric mixture containing oligomeric sialates and siloxanes foamed with aluminium powder. This process results in an amorphous rigid light foam with an apparent 180 Kg/m3 density and a 78% open-pore. The viscoelastic characterisation by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) carried out from 10−3 to 103 Hz indicates the behaviour of a mechanical metamaterial with negative stiffness enabling ultrahigh energy absorption at straining frequencies from 300 to 1000 Hz. The material loss factor (the ratio of dissipative/elastic shear moduli) is about 0.03 (essentially elastic behaviour) for frequencies up to 200 Hz to suddenly increase up to a value of six at 1000 Hz (highly dissipative behaviour). The corresponding storage and loss moduli were 8.2 MPa and 20 MPa, respectively. Impedance tube acoustic absorption measurements on perforated and unperforated specimens highlighted the role of perforation-resonant cavities in enhancing sound absorption efficiency, particularly within the specified frequency band where the mass of the negative stiffness foamed geopolymer matrix magnifies the dissipation effect. In the limits of a still exploratory and comparative study, we aimed to verify the technological transfer potentiality of using architected metamaterials in sustainable building practices. A novel ultra-compact dual-band reconfigurable microstrip phase shifter designed by using a dual-composite right/left handed D-CRLH technique of metamaterial is introduced. The paper proposes detailed studies between the simulation and the fabricated prototype results. Moreover, the study of the proposed phase shifter explains a shifting range from 0° till 360° by submitting four mounted surface switches in different spots of the fingers. Switches have fixed states shifting to provide the controlling of the requested range. The switches were chosen to be from PIN Diode as it has many compatible characteristics which are explained in the proposed paper. The reconfigurable phase shifter designed with high quality factors and low insertion loss 0.25 and 0.2 at 5.7 GHz and 7.5 GHz respectively with a very compact size area 8 × 11. The proposed shifter supports the application of wide band usage especially for network access point, Wi-Fi, WiMAX network, and wireless LAN connections in addition to the application of point to point microwave radio links and X-band of satellite & space communications. Liquid detection has been one of the buzzwords that refer to sensing of various liquids, which include water, chemicals, oils, etc. This detection gains more significance with the advent of metamaterials. Metamaterials are proved well suited in antenna designing, cloaking devices, solar cells, and sensors. Many papers reported metamaterial sensors, which can detect liquid chemicals, oils, etc. through shift in resonance frequency. Very few papers reported the applications of metamaterial sensors in water treatment. Water purification is one of the prime essentials for the existence of healthy humankind. It can be used to remove unwanted chemicals, contaminants and gases from water. The process of water purification can be done with various methods such as thermal, adsorption, distillation, desalination, reverse osmosis, etc. The main aim is to produce water required for specific purpose. In this context, role of metamaterials in water purification is of prime significance. Keeping this in view, an attempt is made to review the importance of metamaterial sensors in liquid detection along with water purification and its importance in comparison with earlier techniques already available. A defining feature of mechanical metamaterials is that their properties are determined by the organization of internal structure instead of the raw fabrication materials. This shift of attention to engineering internal degrees of freedom has coaxed relatively simple materials into exhibiting a wide range of remarkable mechanical properties. For practical applications to be realized, however, this nascent understanding of metamaterial design must be translated into a capacity for engineering large-scale structures with prescribed mechanical functionality. Thus, the challenge is to systematically map desired functionality of largescale structures backward into a design scheme while using finite parameter domains. Such "inverse design" is often complicated by the deep coupling between large-scale structure and local mechanical function, which limits the available design space. Here, we introduce a design strategy for constructing 1D, 2D, and 3D mechanical metamaterials inspired by modular origami and kirigami. Our approach is to assemble a number of modules into a voxelized large-scale structure, where the module's design has a greater number of mechanical design parameters than the number of constraints imposed by bulk assembly. This inequality allows each voxel in the bulk structure to be uniquely assigned mechanical properties independent from its ability to connect and deform with its neighbors. In studying specific examples of large-scale metamaterial structures we show that a decoupling of global structure from local mechanical function allows for a variety of mechanically and topologically complex designs. In this paper, we numerically investigate a tunable and switchable metamaterial absorber operating in the mid-infrared region. The metamaterial structure comprises an array of metal–dielectric concentric nanodisks and a metal square patch on a substrate coated with thin dielectric and metal layers. The two dielectric regions induce two absorption bands, which can be independently tuned by changing the refractive index and geometrical parameters of the dielectric layers. In an optimised geometry, a dual-band to a single-band switchable frequency response is achieved by interchanging the refractive index of the dielectric layers. The origin of the resonant absorptions is traced to the simultaneous excitation of electric and magnetic fields in the dielectric regions. This paper seeks to progress the field of topological photonic crystals (TPC) as a promising tool in face of construction flaws. In particular, the structure can be used as a novel temperature sensor. In this regard, the considered TPC structure comprising two different PC designs named PC1 and PC2. PC1 is designed from a stack of multilayers containing Silicon (Si) and Silicon dioxide (SiO2), while layers of SiO2 and composite layer named hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) are considered in designing PC2. The HMM layer is engineered using subwavelength layers of Si and Bismuth Germinate, or BGO ( Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 ). The mainstay of our suggested temperature sensor is mainly based on the emergence of some resonant modes inside the transmittance spectrum that provide the stability in the presence of the geometrical changes. Meanwhile, our theoretical framework has been introduced in the vicinity of transfer matrix method (TMM), effective medium theory (EMT) and the thermo-optic characteristics of the considered materials. The numerical findings have extensively introduced the role of some topological parameters such as layers' thicknesses, filling ratio through HMM layers and the periodicity of HMM on the stability or the topological features of the introduced sensor. Meanwhile, the numerical results reveal that the considered design provides some topological edge states (TESs) of a promising robustness and stability against certain disturbances or geometrical changes in the constituent materials. Mechanical metamaterials exhibit unique mechanical properties such as vanishing shear modulus, negative Poisson's ratio, negative compressibility, etc. This paper reviews the most commonly used mechanical metamaterials and discusses their applications in the field of applied engineering, specifically in vibration isolation, energy absorption, and vibration reduction. This paper introduces a novel, cost-effective solution designed to achieve large absorption bandwidth within the THz spectrum employing a miniaturized, single-layer metamaterial structure. The designed structure features a single circular ring composed of an ohmic resistive sheet with notably higher sheet resistance than traditional metallic resonators. This distinctive design is implemented on a lossy dielectric polyimide substrate with a backing of metallic gold. Our developed absorbing structure demonstrates the capability to achieve a substantial absorption bandwidth ranging from 3.78 to 4.25 THz, maintaining a consistent absorption rate of over 90%. Moreover, we conducted an analysis to assess its absorption performance under various sheet resistance values within the top layer. Additionally, we characterized its angular stability and polarization insensitivity through oblique incident and polarization angle analysis. Finally, an RLC circuital and interference theory approach is adopted to justify its simulated results. Featured Application: Isotropy-broken electromagnetic metamaterials are used for subwavelength imaging and lithography, emission rate and directivity control, cloaking, and more. The mysterious nature of electromagnetic momentum in materials is considered one of the most significant challenges in physics, surpassing even Hilbert's mathematical problems. In this paper, we demonstrate that the difference between the Minkowski and Abraham momenta, which consists of Roentgen and Shockley hidden momenta, is directly related to the phenomenon of refraction and the tilt of rays from the wavefront propagation direction. We show that individual electromagnetic waves with non-unit indices of refraction (n) appear as quasistatic high-k waves to an observer in the proper frames of the waves. When Lorentz transformed into the material rest frames, these high-k waves are Fresnel–Fizeau dragged from rest to their phase velocities, acquiring longitudinal hidden momentum and related refractive properties. On a material level, all electromagnetic waves belong to Fresnel wave surfaces, which are topologically classified according to hyperbolic phases by Durach and determined by the electromagnetic material parameters. For moving observers, material parameters appear modified, leading to alterations in Fresnel wave surfaces and even the topological classes of the materials may appear differently in moving frames. We discuss the phenomenon of electromagnetic momentum tilt, defined as the non-zero angle between Abraham and Minkowski momenta or, equivalently, between the rays and the wavefront propagation direction. This momentum tilt is only possible in isotropy-broken media, where the E and H fields can be longitudinally polarized in the presence of electric and magnetic bound charge waves. An epoxy-based metamaterial plate structure with local resonance is designed in this paper. The bandgap of the bending wave ranges from 36.46Hz to 110.55Hz. Through the optimization design of the oscillators in the plate structure, the starting bandgap moves to 19.79Hz, and the band gap width is 72Hz. The dispersion curve and frequency response function were calculated by finite element method (FEM). On this basis, the plane wave expansion method formula of the structural model was derived, and the equivalent model of spring-mass model was established. The results show that the calculation results of the three methods of the epoxide metamaterial plate structure were basically consistent, and the correctness of these methods was verified mutually. The methods derived in this paper bring great convenience and diversity to the application of plate structure. The article proposes a low-frequency wide bandgap thick plate structure model. Metamaterials, characterized by unique structures, exhibit exceptional properties applicable across various domains. Traditional methods like experiments and finite-element methods (FEM) have been extensively utilized to characterize these properties. However, exploring an extensive range of structures using these methods for designing desired structures with excellent properties can be time-intensive. This paper formulates a machine-learning-based approach to expedite predicting effective metamaterial properties, leading to the discovery of microstructures with diverse and outstanding characteristics. The process involves constructing 2D and 3D microstructures, encompassing porous materials, solid–solid-based materials, and fluid–solid-based materials. Finite-element methods are then employed to determine the effective properties of metamaterials. Subsequently, the Random Forest (RF) algorithm is applied for training and predicting effective properties. Additionally, the Aquila Optimizer (AO) method is employed for a multiple optimization task in inverse design. The regression model generates accurate estimation with a coefficient of determination higher than 0.98, a mean absolute percentage error lower than 0.088, and a root mean square error lower than 0.03, indicating that the machine-learning-based method can accurately characterize the metamaterial properties. An optimized structure with a high Young's modulus and low thermal conductivity is designed by AO within the first 30 iterations. This approach accelerates simulating the effective properties of metamaterials and can design microstructures with multiple excellent performances. Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterials have garnered considerable attention due to their capacity to achieve negative parameters, significantly influencing the integration of natural materials with artificially structural media. The emergence of carbon aerogels (CAs) offers an opportunity to create lightweight EM metamaterials, notable for their promising EM shielding or absorption effects. This paper introduces an efficient, low‐cost method for fabricating CAs without requiring stringent drying conditions. By finely tuning the ZnCl2/lignin ratio, the porosity is controlled in CAs. This control leads to an epsilon‐negative response in the radio‐frequency region, driven by the intrinsic plasmonic state of the 3D carbon network, as opposed to traditional periodic building blocks. This approach yields a tunable and weakly epsilon‐negative response, reaching an order of magnitude of −103 under MHz frequencies. Equivalent circuit analysis highlights the inductive characteristics of CAs, correlating their significant dielectric loss at low frequencies. Additionally, EM simulations are performed to evaluate the distribution of the electric field vector in epsilon‐negative CAs, showcasing their potential for effective EM shielding. The lignin‐derived, lightweight CAs with their tunable epsilon‐negative response hold promise for pioneering new directions in EM metamaterials and broadening their application in diverse extreme conditions. Multilayered van der Waals (vdW) materials have attracted increasing interest because of the manipulability of their superior optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. A mass-spring model (MSM) for elastic wave propagation in multilayered vdW metamaterials is reported in this paper. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are adopted to simulate the propagation of elastic waves in multilayered vdW metamaterials. The results show that the graphene/MoS2 metamaterials have an elastic wave bandgap in the terahertz range. The MSM for the multilayered vdW metamaterials is proposed, and the numerical simulation results show that this model can well describe the dispersion and transmission characteristics of the multilayered vdW metamaterials. The MSM can predict elastic wave transmission characteristics in multilayered vdW metamaterials stacked with different two-dimensional (2D) materials. This research paper demonstrates a metamaterial (MTM) based sensing technique to detect various blood samples by analyzing their dielectric properties. The performance of this MTM-based sensor is evaluated with the help of mimicked human blood samples that closely resemble the dielectric properties of actual human blood samples. Moreover, the ISM band frequency of 2.4 GHz is chosen as one of the reference resonance frequencies due to its various industrial and medical applications. The resonating patch is developed on the FR-4 substrate with a dimension of 10 × 20 mm2 that provides sharp reference resonances of 2.4 and 4.72 GHz for the spectra of the transmission coefficient with a good quality factor (Q-factor). The MTM sensor can detect the mimicked blood samples with a maximum frequency deviation of up to 650 MHz at 2.4 GHz and up to 850 MHz at 4.72 GHz, with maximum sensitivity of 0.917 and 0.707, respectively. The measured results using the prototype of the sensor support the simulation result with good agreement, indicating high sensing capability. Due to its high sensitivity, figure of merit (FoM), and frequency shifting with dielectric property changes in blood samples, the developed MTM-based sensor can be implemented effectively for quick sensing of infected blood samples and biomedical applications. In this paper, a dual-band and dual-broadband terahertz (THz) metamaterial absorber (MA) using two asymmetric rectangular rings is proposed and studied. The proposed bifunctional MA possesses not only the dual-band absorption performance with absorptivities of 97.81% and 99.53% at 2.07 and 2.88 THz but also the dual-broadband absorption performance with absorptivity above 90% in two frequency ranges of 5.74–6.98 and 9.81–10.83 THz. The distributions of electric fields at resonant frequencies are utilized to analyze the working principle of the proposed bifunctional MA. Moreover, the influences of incident angle and polarization angle on dual-band and dual-broadband absorption performance are also investigated. Different from the previous MAs with asymmetric resonators, our bifunctional MA has polarization insensitivity despite the use of two asymmetric rectangular rings. A terahertz metamaterial microfluidic sensing chip for ultrasensitive detection is proposed to investigate the response of substances to terahertz radiation in liquid environments and enhance the molecular fingerprinting of trace substances. The structure consists of a cover layer, a metal microstructure, a microfluidic channel, a metal reflective layer, and a buffer layer from top to bottom, respectively. The simulation results show that there are three obvious resonance absorption peaks in the range of 1.5–3.0 THz and the absorption intensities are all above 90%. Among them, the absorption intensity at M1 = 1.971 THz is 99.99%, which is close to the perfect absorption, and its refractive index sensitivity and Q-factor are 859 GHz/RIU and 23, respectively, showing excellent sensing characteristics. In addition, impedance matching and equivalent circuit theory are introduced in this paper to further analyze the physical mechanism of the sensor. Finally, we perform numerical simulations using refractive index data of normal and cancer cells, and the results show that the sensor can distinguish different types of cells well. The chip can reduce the sample pretreatment time as well as enhance the interaction between terahertz waves and matter, which can be used for early disease screening and food quality and safety detection in the future. In this paper, we demonstrate that the absorption frequencies of the bimodal absorber shift with the coupling strength of the bright and dark modes. The coupling between the bright mode and the dark mode can acquire electromagnetically induced transparency, we obtain the analytical relationship between the absorbing frequencies, the resonant frequencies, losses of the bright mode and dark mode, and the coupling strength between two modes by combining the coupled mode theory with the interference theory. As the coupling strength between the bright mode and the dark mode decreases, the two absorption peaks gradually move closer to each other, inversely, they will move away from each other. This paper presents experimental verification results for a finite‐sized array of a simple non‐reciprocal metasurface elements. The metasurface elements consists of ferrite loaded metal patches. Experimental results demonstrate nonreciprocity, achieving isolation exceeding 20 dB at 6.4 GHz in a 2×2 array. This paper proposes a metamaterial inspired radio frequency touchpad sensor system based on two split ring resonators (SRRs) realized on a Rogers/Duroid 5870 with 2.33 dielectric constant = 2.33, loss tangent = 0.0012, and thickness = 0.8 mm. The touchpad consists of two SRRs resonating at $f_{1} = 2.74$ GHz and $f_{2} = 3.86$ GHz. When a finger is placed on SRR 1, $f_{1}$ changes from 2.74 to 2.57 GHz due to electromagnetic coupling between the SRR and the finger, and similarly, $f_{2}$ changes from 3.86 to 3.76 GHz. The proposed touchpad system can detect a finger wearing a glove, in contrast to capacitive touchpads utilized in contemporary smart phones.
