This paper examines how contemporary Shiʿi scholars of rijāl deal with problematic isnāds through engaging in a thorough examination of the isnād patterns. It focuses on a sample model that has been undertaken to identify an informant of the renowned Shiʿi hadith collector Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq al-Kulaynī (329/941), recorded in his magnum opus, al-Kāfī fī ʿIlm al-Dīn. Upon identifying the problem through examining the variants of the tradition, the paper then tries to ascertain the identity of the problematic reporter in the sanad by first looking into classical rijāl works such as those written by Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Asadī al-Najāshī (d. 450/1058) and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ṭūsī (385/996-460/1067). After exhausting these classical sources, it examines how the more recent prominent Shiʿi scholars of rijāl, such as Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad Taqī Nurī al-Ṭabarsī (d. 1902), Sayyid Ḥusayn Ṭabāṭabāʾī Borūjerdī (d. 1961), Ayatollah al-Sayyid Mūsā al-Shubayirī al-Zanjānī, and Ayatollah Muḥammad Āṣif al-Muḥsinī deal with the issue. During the eighteenth century, language-experts were increasingly concerned with correctness and appropriate social expression. As a result, English grammar went through several attempts to codify and prescribe rules for correct usage, so that the number of these works increased rapidly from the 1760s onwards and reached a notable peak in the 1790s. In order to find a place in an increasingly saturated marketplace, authors, editors and publishers variously resorted to selling strategies that included, for instance, adding value to the English grammar by incorporating rich prefatory or post-main-text matter. This paper deals with author(itie)s and sources explicitly mentioned in the prefatory matter of eighteenth-century English grammars for children, with a focus on metacomments aimed at endorsing the book with reliability and validity for teachers and young learners. This paper attempts to analyze the curious effects of the comic scenes in The Castle of Otranto (1764) through a close reading of Walpole's famous prefaces to the novel. The comic scenes evoke an incongruous dramatic response and contradict the claims made in the prefaces, according to which comic elements highlight dramatic ones. While being often thought of as indicative of a general aesthetic failure, the comic elements in this foundational text of the Gothic are indeed subtle, complex and artful. More precisely, Walpole's curious use of laughter makes a complex appeal to an extra-dramatic level which undercuts the reader's identification with the dramatic situations represented in the novel. Although Nietzsche scholars have paid close attention to his aphoristic and rhetorical style, few have focused on his practice of writing prefaces. In this paper, I engage in a close reading of Nietzsche's prefaces and identify five themes present in his earlier and later prefaces: (1) he speaks directly to his readers, (2) he stresses the necessity of slow and careful reading, (3) he encourages readers to trust themselves, (4) he refers to himself as a herald, and (5) he uses combative and polemical language to describe his work. Given these themes, I conclude that Nietzsche's preface writing project constitutes a practice of self-care as described by Foucault in "Technologies of the Self" and "The Ethics of the Concern for Self as a Practice of Freedom." The paper is an exploratory textual genre analysis that attempted to determine the rhetorical strcuture of nine Research Article Introductions (RAIs) published in the three local journals of De La Salle Lipa. The study used John Swales' widely accepted Create a Research Space Model (CARS) with its moves and steps to analyze RAIs of studies on religion/spirituality, instrument development/management and students' perceptions. Through the exploratory investigation of the nine RAIs, it was concluded that the examined introductions were generally analyzable according to CARS' model, especially in the employment of moves 1 and 3, establishing a territory and occupying the niche respectively. However, the studied RAIs failed to include Move 2 which is establishing a niche. Conclusively, the study revealed that authors within the same academic community shared similar strategies in their RAIs. A modified model for crafting the RAI was proposed by the end of the study. Anyu, found in ancient Chinese bibliographies, is an author's note that adds extra information to the prefaces of different classificatory sections, and may record annotations concerning individual books. Siku quanshu zongmu, which contains 127 occurrences of anyu, may be regarded as typical. While anyu are valuable and beneficial to the bibliographical study of ancient Chinese books and to Chinese literary history, study of them has long been neglected and only a few articles have been written. This paper tries to redress this neglect by providing a more comprehensive investigation of the distribution, content and contribution to the bibliographical study of ancient Chinese books and Chinese scholarly history by the anyu contained in the Siku quanshu zongmu. In this special issue of the European Journal of Applied Mathematics we celebrate the 75th birthday of its founding editor, Professor John Ockendon.John started his research career with his D.Phil., awarded in 1965, working with Alan Tayler at the University of Oxford. John's background was in fluid mechanics, covering a wide range of topics, including, lubrication flows, flows in porous media, hypersonic aerodynamics, sloshing phenomena, and flow separation. He soon became involved in industrial research which led, in particular, to his interest in the field of free boundary problems, an area in which he became a driving force, through papers, conferences, and particularly through the fostering of regular international meetings and personal interactions. His pioneering work in the field was particularly concentrated in diffusion-controlled moving boundary problems that arise in various applications, such as in phase change problems, elastic-contact problems and the fundamental Hele-Shaw free boundary problem. The industrial collaborations also led to mathematical studies of lens design, fibre extrusion, fluidised beds, glass manufacture and semiconductor devices, to name but a few, and to problems in scattering and wave theory, non-linear wave propagation and non-linear oscillations, as well as mechanics and heat and mass transfer.
