English education in Japan has traditionally focused on grammar over communication, and the country has struggled to compete internationally in terms of English proficiency scores. As the country works toward the internationalization of higher education, improving English education is an important issue. One potential solution is the use of topics that elicit students' interest and make them feel like part of the international community. This paper explored the use of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a topic due to their global importance and position, along with English, as a key to furthering the global citizenship of Japan's youth. Because of the substantial number of SDGs, not all goals can be realistically addressed in a single course. Therefore, to find topics tailored to students' interests in sustainability, this study examined the relationship between student interest in sustainability, International Posture (IP), and personal connection to SDGs. A survey was given to 266 first-year university students in general education English classes. A separate multiple regression analysis was conducted for the target variable, "Topic Interest" within English class for each goal, to determine how the effects and significance of variables differed for each SDG. Results showed that the IP subscale, "Intergroup Approach Tendency," was significant for 14 and "Personal Value" was significant for 16 of the goals. For internationally minded students engaged in the study of English as a foreign language, the SDGs could be a useful motivational tool.

Universities can play a key role in contributing to a sustainable future for our planet and its inhabitants. In times of constant changes, there is a growing urgency to reflect on the vision of universities as well as their respective practices and projects that can promote the creation of sustainable societies. As is evident in scholarly literature, there is a need to empower universities and enhance their ability to prepare individuals who can confront global sustainability challenges and pursue sustainable development. The United Nations' adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015 recognised that societal problems were territorially blind, meaning that no country has sufficient knowledge or research capacity to solve all challenges on its own. To that end, this qualitative, comparative research study represents the unified effort of two very different countries to explore the topic of education for sustainable development (SD) at universities. The study employed a document analysis of selected publicly funded universities in Canada and South Africa. Gathered documents are from the past seven years and include the universities' mission and vision statements, annual reports, and strategic plans. The three main questions addressed in this work are: (a) What is the status and role of higher education for SD in Canada and South Africa? (b) What areas of SD are on the agenda of universities under investigation in Canada and South Africa? (c) What are the main similarities and differences between the two contexts under investigation? Findings indicate that universities focus on several aspects of SD, namely sustainable education, sustainable relationships, and sustainable initiatives. The paper discusses these areas for each country in connection to their contextual setting. Although the study's findings cannot be generalised, they can be informative for other universities and contexts and thus contribute to the body of knowledge about education for SD in higher education.

This paper examines a PBL project module "Sustainable Urban Transformation" in an Urban Design master's education. The module combines urban design and hydrology engineering. Within the module, students are supported by lectures and study circles on various dimensions of sustainability, especially vis-a-vis climate change. However, they are left with the freedom to choose how they balance between design and engineering approaches when they give a physical form for sustainability in the site transformation projects with which they work through the semester. This paper discusses the development of their skills building on three Aristotelean concepts: techne (engineering), poiesis (aesthetic form-giving), and phronesis (making of ethical judgments). The last two concepts, the paper argues, are especially important when at issue is design education. Based on an analysis of the student projects in Fall 2022, the paper examines whether and how the students manage to find a balance between engineering skills, on the one hand, and aesthetic creativity and ethical judgement, on the other hand, in their project work.

The consumption of technical and vocational education and training has increased exponentially over the past two decades. In terms of inclusion, it is without a doubt that today's TVET sector is a far cry from what it was before the democratic government took over the baton from the apartheid government. TVET has become a refuge to many hopefuls from the historically disadvantaged sectors of society who, due to a range of apparent reasons, would ordinarily not have managed to partake in tertiary education. To many South African youth, TVET presents an avenue for the acquisition of a skill that will give them a fighting chance at escaping the harsh recurrence of poverty, economic inactivity and resource deprivation they are subjected to almost on a daily basis. However, beneath this silver lining lies a growing public disgruntlement over the TVET system's ability to steadfastly deliver quality education and transform the lives of students, by instilling in them agency for self-regulated and collaborative innovation that will turn them into formidable and assertive role players in the knowledge societies, come the fourth industrial revolution (4IR). To understand the crux of public mistrust in TVET college education in South Africa, an extensive body of literature was reviewed. The findings of the paper point to strategic factors (which in the main are attributed to a lack of effective leadership and managerial skills) and contextual factors that occur at a campus level, as major causes of public mistrust in TVET education. The paper concludes by tabling a manifesto for changing the status quo ahead of the advent of 4IR.

This paper is a follow-up to determine the accuracy of the predictions stated in a previously published article titled "Higher Education in the Midst of a Pandemic: A Dean's Perspective" (Rowley, 2020). Those predictions were more like educated guesses since the paper was written in 2020, the year the pandemic was beginning to spread across the country. It was certain significant changes would occur, but the nature and scope of these changes were unknown at the time. As mentioned in the above referenced paper, the difficulty of predicting the future was the fact that there were no predetermined guidelines for how to offer academic programs to students in the midst of a serious, widespread health crisis. College administrators were called upon to flexibly respond to a changed environment they had not previously experienced. This paper will review the predictions made in the areas of college sustainability, financial viability, enrollment, program delivery, technology, library and student services, and the college experience.

Service learning (SL) engages students in intentional, collaborative service experiences that promote civic citizenship. The COVID-19 pandemic forced traditional face-to-face SL courses to transition into virtual service learning (e-SL). This paper examines the academic and civic outcomes of an e-SL binational sustainable tourism course for undergraduate students. The course was designed to deliver disciplinary knowledge in sustainable tourism and transborder civic citizenship competencies in the following areas: 1) Ethos, 2) Literacy, 3) Inquiry, 4) Action, 5) Leadership, and 6) Partnership. A post-course student survey was deployed to assess student perspectives regarding the achievement of course outcomes. The findings revealed significant (positive) academic and civic transformations among the students due to the intentionality of the e-SL course design and implementation. Results indicate that e-SL in sustainable tourism education can be an effective pedagogy for inculcating civic learning, responsibility, and engagement among students and future professionals in the field of tourism.

Despite its increasing popularity as a continuous professional development tool in ELT contexts, why teacher research remains as a minority activity and whether or how its impacts persist over time still require detailed exploration. In this mixed-methods case study of university instructors in Turkey, we address the questions of teacher research engagement and sustainability of its impacts. The study started with a relatively larger group (n=33), and then gradually narrowed into three sub-groups to gain an in-depth understanding of the case. Two questionnaires consisting of closed and open-ended questions and interviews carried out with semi-structured forms have been used as data collection tools. The qualitative data have been analyzed by content analysis, while frequency analysis has been carried out for the quantitative data. Findings reveal that expert support and colleagues with research experience trigger teacher research engagement, whereas limitations in institutional support and instructors' awareness of teacher research and economic matters contribute to the most prevalent barrier to teacher research viz. lack of time. Moreover, instructors feel more motivated and confident, research-oriented four years after their teacher research projects. We argue that positive experience with context-related research projects and dissemination of research results in various forms facilitate the sustainability of those impacts and efforts to engage in new projects, while constraints in time and institutional support hinder these. Embedding sustainability into pedagogical approaches is a key priority in higher education. Equipping students with knowledge, understanding, and skills, and developing the next generation of innovators and leaders, can potentially provide the change needed and create a real impact in the journey to a sustainable future. Advancement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and corresponding industries can be seen as vital for the success of meeting a majority of the sustainable development goals, and hence the approaches taken to embed sustainability in learning and teaching in STEM higher education programmes can be considered significant in many ways. This paper is based on published literature over the last two decades and a semi-structured interview with 12 university academics from a developing country. Hence, the paper reviews approaches taken to embed sustainability in learning, teaching and assessments in STEM programmes. It also aims to investigate the actions taken by universities to integrate sustainability in STEM education and the remedies taken to minimise the impact of the pandemic on the effectiveness of the learning pedagogies used to integrate sustainability concepts.

Although aspects of sustainability in communication such as nonviolence are discussed from time to time, hardly any theoretical basement with an empirical validation can be found. In the broadest sense, sustainability refers to the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time. This paper asks for the theoretical approach that helps to understand the challenges of teaching in schools of diverse societies (2) and explains some core aspects of the ongoing research on sustainability and communication (3). After that, this paper presents the research question this project tried to answer (4) and explains the used instruments, the data, and some of the most relevant outcomes of this study (5). Finally, some conclusions describe the opportunities and threats of sustainable communication for teacher education. The outcome of this paper is that a specific theory of sustainable communication is missing. Furthermore, the results of the empirical investigation show that intercultural communication, nonviolent communication, cooperation, problem solving and, reflection are statistically related as constructs and predictors of sustainable communication. Also, the teaching experience of the participants in the sample is a significant predictor of the sustainable communication.

Research in the field of Higher Education in Emergencies (HEiE) starts to question the imposed Global North-centred perspective which arrives with ready-made solutions, considering refugees as objects of intervention rather than subjects of transformation. Leveraging the broader topics of Open Science and Open Education, this paper pioneers a new approach to scientific cooperation, fostering values of Openness in refugee higher education. It specifically addresses HEiE in Niger, Africa, in a training of trainers' programme. It is designed in a participatory manner involving academics from the Global South and Global North, refugees who are themselves educators, and NGOs. Taking the form of a Certificate of Open Studies (COS), the training empowers refugees as enabled change agents, capable of making sense of diverse knowledge systems to transform their reality. Preliminary understanding of Open Cooperation is shared through a conceptual framework, Empowering refugees through liberation-oriented education. It addresses sustainability at the ontological and epistemic levels and relies on four main dimensions: Epistemologies of the South, Openness, Common good and Education as empowerment.

Long-term energy supply constitutes a pressing global issue. As a renewable energy resource, bioenergy can play a significant role in energy sustainability. The present study aimed to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of bioenergy amongst 412 Greek preservice primary teachers utilising a specific tool, the IBPAMS. Results confirmed the factorial validity and reliability of the Greek version of the IBPAMS. It also demonstrated that the energy and bioenergy-related knowledge of preservice teachers is moderate and poor respectively, while critical perceptions are held over the sustainability of forest-based bioenergy production. Overall preservice teacher attitudes toward bioenergy are positive. Statistical analyses showed that gender influenced the responses of the motivational and critical aspects of the IBPAMS-GR. The paper's findings have important implications for teacher preparation programs.

Background and Aim: Thailand's higher education institutions have several problems arising from demographic shifts, digital disruptions, geopolitical transformations, and environmental vulnerabilities. These circumstances call for the implementation of strategic foresight and flexible crisis management strategies, particularly in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this review article is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the importance of maintaining continuity in future thinking as a proactive strategy for crisis management in the context of higher education in Thailand. Materials and Methods: The current paper serves as an academic platform that consolidates articles, books, and additional resources sourced from several online libraries. The previously mentioned scholarly essay effectively achieved its objectives by employing the methods of analysis and synthesis. The organization of the content in this academic work has been meticulously arranged to present an appropriate level of detail and depth to the research objectives outlined. Results: This academic article found that the application of forward-looking strategies in the management of crises within the Thai higher education system has the potential to bolster both resilience and sustainability. The essential components encompass proactive strategic planning, comprehensive scenario analysis, the integration of technical breakthroughs, and fostering collaborative efforts. This method guarantees the expansion and achievement of the sector within the dynamic higher education environment. Conclusion: Forward-looking strategies in Thai higher education management can enhance resilience and sustainability, involving proactive planning, scenario analysis, technical breakthrough integration, and collaborative efforts. To establish themselves as proactive agents of change, Thai higher education institutions must undergo a paradigm shift in their approach to crisis management. This necessitates dedication, cooperation, and embracing the inherent unpredictability. The benefits encompass a robust and future-oriented educational ecosystem that flourishes through challenges, influencing the trajectory of the industry.

Students of art-based higher educational programs use artistic practices and academic methods to explore complex societal topics and produce artistic outcomes that embody new knowledge and insights. Universities have an essential role in helping to shape sustainable futures, and art-based research frequently explores complex and abstract topics, such as sustainability. In this paper, we provide reflections on 33 of the 127 undergraduate student projects we surveyed that concern sustainability over a period of 10 years at a problem-based learning (PBL) university as part of an Art and Technology degree program. Art and Technology is a STEAM education, where STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects are taught alongside artistic methods. Specifically, we investigate how students formulate sustainability problems within an art-based research framework by identifying the: (1) themes within sustainability and art that were of most concern, (2) research aims of these projects within a PBL context, and (3) artistic and academic methods employed as part of the research process. Additionally, we provide select examples of the artistic outcomes of these student projects as evidence for how artistic methods and practices -- by virtue of necessarily experiential work -- can concretize the often abstract notion of sustainability, making it accessible to diverse student populations and the public.

Meeting the needs of dual-career academic couples has become an important part of university efforts to foster family-friendly workplaces. Many universities have developed formal or informal approaches to addressing dual-career issues, but variation across institutions has made it difficult to detect wider patterns or probe their implications. In this paper, we analyze the dual-career policies and materials (848 documents total) of all R1 institutions in the United States. As with studies from roughly two decades ago, we find deficiencies in institutional support and transparency. However, given reduced state revenues for institutions of higher education and a rise in precarious employment arrangements over the same time period, conditions for academic couples are arguably worse today. In order for universities to address these concerns and contribute meaningfully to broader forms of inclusion, we argue that there is a need for sustained funding commitments and infrastructural support for dual-career programs.

The focus on early childhood education for sustainability within children's literature is part of a mindful shift towards a more critical praxis with young children, families, communities and students in higher education. This paper reports on qualitative pedagogic research undertaken as part of a first-year module in an undergraduate Early Childhood Studies degree programme at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), United Kingdom (UK). The research involved the creation of children's literature (e-books) by students using "Book Creator," focussed on one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The overarching aim of the project was to explore how the process of creating children's literature to facilitate early childhood education for sustainability supports students to engage in cultural production. In this paper, we present an analysis of the students' e-books and supporting rationales for their storybook creation. The study findings were that student-authors demonstrated different constructions of children, cognisance of the pedagogical purpose and different ways of knowing through the storybook creation. These findings contribute to existing debates concerned with early childhood literature and sustainability, and students as authors.

In the 21st century individuals are expected to use their knowledge to find user-centric solutions in a variety of circumstances, places and times. Design thinking is a human-centric process application compatible with 21st century skills such as innovation, creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and cooperation. Design thinking takes the theoretical structure of thinking and turns it into action. The design thinking approach is a tool to raise individuals who solve problems, question situations and create products. Design thinking asks students to solve complex problems with more than one applicable solution and evaluates the students in a flexible and dynamic structure. This study aimed to ascertain student teachers' opinions about the concept of design thinking before they started to work as teachers. The phenomenology approach, which is a qualitative research design was used in the study. The participants of this study comprised 28 student teachers in different departments of the selected faculty of education. The purposeful criterion sampling method and maximum variation sampling method were used to identify the participants. Semi-structured and non-directive focus group interviews were conducted to collect the data. During the focus group interview, the data were enriched and deepened through social interaction and group dynamics. The opinions were obtained via the focus group interviews qualitatively in accordance with the content analysis and presented through the program Maxqda-20. The results showed that student teachers saw design thinking as a flexible and dynamic structure that could facilitate high quality cooperative interaction. Also, in the changing and developing structure of a world with ever more complex problems, the student teachers found design thinking to be a strong alternative to combat challenges. The findings, additionally, indicated that looking into the concept of design thinking as a sustainable learning tool in teacher training was very important to raise students with a focus on design thinking. This paper reports the study which explored the learning and teaching of the topics of climate change, sustainability and disaster risk reduction in secondary-level teacher education programs in England and Japan. Through interviewing teacher educators, the study particularly probed how teacher education programs used local knowledge and collaboration in discussing the above topics. Geography tends to be the main subject area for these global agendas, but its crammed curriculum is "an ongoing challenge" for teacher education. Some researchers demonstrate that university-based initial teacher education has "ignored" training teachers on how to implement environmental and sustainability education at schools. Besides, the inquiries into how initial teacher education equips geography teachers for the learning and teaching of disaster risk reduction are still scarce. This paper aims to fill this gap by bringing together the fields of geography education, climate change and sustainability education, disaster risk reduction education and initial teacher education.

Higher education is challenged by workforce needs to transform its outcomes from "knowledge-based" to "competency-based" outcomes. High-impact educational practices, commonly referred to as HIPs, provide, among other benefits, efficacious development of workforce-ready specific competencies. Strategic implementation of HIPs has yet to be diffused at Saudi universities. The Northern Border University (NBU) has identified a set of core competencies graduate workforce-ready graduates. To effectively realize the intended outcomes of its core competencies, NBU selected a set of HIPs to increase student success. This paper discusses NBU's processes and implementation strategies in selecting core competencies and HIPs with ultimate aim of translating both to the local higher education culture and norms in order to effectively achieve desired outcomes.

This paper explores Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) knowledge and behavioural differences of university students in the United Kingdom and Malaysia. The researchers also explore gender as an indicator of students' SDG awareness and behaviours as few studies to date have explored this area. This study employed a sustainability consciousness questionnaire (SCQ) that was developed to measure SDG knowledge based on the UNESCO framework for sustainability behaviour. Questionnaires were distributed to 156 university students in the UK and Malaysia. Malaysian university students reported higher scores for understanding SDG content and scope and the specific SDGs of their country compared to British students, although British students have been receiving formal education on SDGs. University students in the UK were also unable to transform their SDG knowledge into sustainability behaviours, although they had a certain level of understanding of the topic covered by the SDGs. Malaysian university students exhibited a closer relationship between SDG knowledge and sustainable behaviours given the sufficient institutional and policy support and customised university programs. SDG knowledge and sustainability behaviours were the same for male and female students in both countries. In conclusion, integrating SDG knowledge into university education will inevitably lead students to work towards SDG goals in the future. This can be achieved with proper planning of the university curriculum and the enforcement of educational policies.

Key international and Australasian bodies have reported research suggesting the accounting profession is one of the most vulnerable to disruption through automation and changed business models. But research discussed in this paper confirms that while component parts of an accounting 'job' will be replaced by technology, the capabilities required to perform remaining accounting and finance activities would not only endure, they would spread across many non-accounting roles. This report presents the findings from the final stage of a validation process that was conducted by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) across Australia and New Zealand. The report confirms 24 capabilities, including six considered essential requirements for every professional seeking to work in accounting, finance, and related work roles. The findings provide evidence that these capabilities, in contrast to recent reports suggesting employment opportunities for accounting graduates are in decline, can create opportunities for sustainable careers. The validation project and survey results provide unexpected insight into the capabilities of different age groups and professionals at different career stages that are considered important. The research outlined in this paper will not only inform continuing professional education for members but also help refine the design of post-graduate curriculum and continuing professional development.

This paper reflects on the process followed in the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh to cultivate an innovative and entrepreneurial culture among students and faculty. As a member of the first cohort of the Pathways program, a strategic process was initiated to unlock the innovation capabilities of students and to feed the demand that early activities suggested existed for more entrepreneurial-focused courses and programs. The plan focused on four inter-related areas of development: people, policies, places, and programs. This paper describes steps undertaken for each key area, as well as why it is believed that each of these areas is necessary for a healthy and sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship culture. Quantified measures of results in each area are presented to describe progress and performance. The near-term mission of the program is to develop a culture in which students learn to create, cultivate, and launch impactful ideas, but the long-term goal is for students to carry those skills with them to realize impactful careers of innovation and entrepreneurship.

This paper describes a Nyungar language revitalisation project in the southern region of Western Australia conducted in partnership between a university research team and the Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation. It discusses how linguistic analysis of historical Nyungar documentation was essential to addressing community aims of re-embedding the language into the community, developing and using pedagogical resources, and exploring new domains for language use. In particular, this paper focuses on the community's desire for the reclamation of a dialectal flavour of Nyungar that is distinctive to the Esperance region, and the factors contributing to a successful partnership between the researchers and the community organisation in terms of capacity-building, leadership, and sustainability.

A comprehensive theoretical, legal and practical basis for OER has been developed over the past fifteen years, supported by the expansion of open source curation platforms and the work of advocacy groups and international bodies. OER's potential has been sufficiently documented; the question remains how best to support, integrate and normalise OER activity within the academic community in a sustainable fashion. This paper draws on the experiences of the Vice Chancellor's Open Educational Resources Adaptation project in the University of Cape Town, which explored whether postgraduate students, with their blend of developing subject knowledge, greater time resources, and experience of teaching artefacts from both a learner's and educator's perspective, may be a valuable resource for lecturers or institutions eager to engage in OER but lacking the requisite support structures. It was found that postgraduates were best employed as capacitating agents, focusing on the non-pedagogical elements of OER adaptation. This paper examines three new tools--a framework, an heuristic and a lens--for analysing lecturers' adoption of OER in higher educational settings. Emerging from research conducted at the universities of Cape Town (UCT), Fort Hare (UFH) and South Africa (UNISA) on why lecturers adopt--or do not adopt--OER, these tools enable greater analytical insights at the institutional and cross-institutional level, and hold the potential for generic global application. The framework--the OER Adoption Pyramid--helps distinguish and compare the factors shaping lecturers' OER adoption which are both immediate (over which they have personal control) and remote (over which they have less or no control). The heuristic--the OER Readiness Tables--derives from the Pyramid and provides a visual representation of the institutions' obstacles and opportunities for OER engagement. The lens--of "institutional culture"--nuances these comparisons so that the analysis remains attentive to granular, idiosyncratic variables shaping OER decisions. We believe this research will have value for scholars interested in researching OER adoption, and institutions interested in promoting it. The aim of this paper is to share our story about introducing environmental sustainability education (ESE) in an initial teacher education (ITE) program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at University of Toronto, starting in 2018. In so far as narratives motivate reflection and action, the goal is to encourage readers to start a conversation with colleagues at their respective institutions (university or college) about how they might do something similar. Consideration is given to how this case fits what Neus (Snowy) Evans refers to as a "systems approach" to implementing ESE in ITE, even if more in retrospect and through improvisation than through foresight and technical prowess.

This pedagogical paper presents an approach to urban design taught in the "Complex Densities Studio" CDS of the Institute of Architecture and Earth Sciences of Setif (IAST). This approach is based on urban analysis and scenario building, the use of parametric tools, and the constitution of reusable "parametric actions". The parametric approach invites students to state their project intentions. Parametric computing allows building a digital model from certain parameters. The digital model aims to verify the interactions of the student project in the urban context dynamically and iteratively. It offers the possibility of identifying the most efficient models concerning the stated criteria. The urban typologies and ambiances are evaluated throughout the design process, thus allowing for permanent adjustments. The chosen context is the El-Harrach district in the city of Algiers: the population density and the rapid transformation of urban areas offer a stimulating framework to experiment with a parametric approach to the student project. The approach of the CDS is based on numerous and diverse data, transcribed in diagrams, pre-formal plans, and parametric models, allowing to move from an abstract and quantitative dimension to the formalization of urban ambiances in a progressive and qualitative way.

The current paper scrutinizes the students' voice on the educational COVID-19 based changes that occurred at the Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities, University of Žilina, Slovakia. The respondents' study program is "Teaching English Language and Literature." The significance of the study lies in the urgent need of today's educators to detect students' views on new modes of studying applicable these days to find beneficial solutions for the provision of high-quality education services. The focal point has been placed on the students' voice, i.e., on the students' comparative approach towards current online and traditional classroom mode of studying/learning. The research has been supported by a questionnaire with 11 EFL-related statements to test the hypotheses of this study. Hence, the objectives of the research have been to compare the quality of education performed through the online and offline classroom frameworks, evaluate the effectiveness of the students' language skills development, and track students' level of satisfaction with the running online model of studying -- all this viewed and uttered by students themselves. The current research employs "mixed methods" that imply the integration of quantitative and qualitative data within a single inquiry. Overall, 61.6% of the surveyed students expressed their satisfaction with the blended learning system and their readiness to apply it in further teaching practice. This research is not exhaustive and might broaden into a comparative study of the students' language-related feedback of the online/offline education among other European and non-European English language departments, building a substantial basis for policy decisions.
