Abstract

MgAl2O4 (MA)-Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and MA-MgNb2O6 (MN) ceramics with high density were successfully fabricated via a single-stage solid-state reaction sintering (SRS) process at 1580?C for 4 h. The effect of Y2O3 or Nb2O5 additions from 2.5 wt% to 7.5 wt% on the phase compositions, microstructures, shrinkage ratio, apparent porosity, bulk density and cold compressive strength of MA-YAG and MA-MN ceramics has been investigated. It was found that MgO and Y2O3 reacted with Al2O3 to form MA and YAG during sintering while Nb2O5 reacted with MgO to form MN. YAG and MA grains in the MA-YAG ceramics exist as granular shape, and their average grain size is about 1 ?m and 5 ?m, respectively. YAG grains distribute on the intergranular space of MA particles. Polygonal MA particles can be observed in the MA-MN ceramics, and MN grains distribute on the intergranular space of MA particles as well as on MA particles. Rod-like MN grains can be formed in the MA-MN ceramics by addition of 7.5 wt% Nb2O5. The diameter shrinkage ratio, volume shrinkage ratio, bulk density and cold compressive strength of MA-YAG and MA-MN ceramics are greatly improved by doping Y2O3 and Nb2O5, respectively.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effects of ZrO 2 types including YSZ and nano-ZrO 2 as well as their contents on the phase compositions, macrostructures, microstructures, physical properties, mechanical properties and biocompatibility of Ti2448-ZrO 2 composites fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The mechanical properties such as hardness and compressive yield strength of the composites have been systematically investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that the hardness and compressive yield strength of the composites all dramatically increased with increasing the content of YSZ and nano-ZrO 2 . Meanwhile the nano-ZrO 2 could be beneficial to the uniformity of microstructure and improvement in mechanical strength of the composites. The biocompatibility of the composites containing nano-ZrO 2 was found to possess better corrosion resistance. In conclusion, Ti2448-ZrO 2 composites are potentially useful in biomedical applications with their mechanical and biological properties being evaluated in this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Low-loss (Zn 1- x Ni x )ZrNbTaO 8 (0.02 ≤  x  ≤ 0.10) ceramics possessing single wolframite structure are initiatively synthesized by solid-state route. Based on the results of Rietveld refinement, complex chemical bond theory is used to establish the correlation between structural characteristics and microwave performance in this ceramic system. A small amount of Ni 2+ ( x  = 0.06) in A-site with the fixed substitution of Ta 5+ in B-site can effectually raise the Q  ×  f value of ZnZrNb 2 O 8 ceramic, embodying a dense microstructure and high lattice energy. The dielectric constant and τ f are mainly affected by bond ionicity and the average octahedral distortion. The (Zn 0.94 Ni 0.06 )ZrNbTaO 8 ceramic sample sintered at 1150 °C for 3 h exhibits an outstanding combination of microwave dielectric properties: ε r = 27.88, Q × f  = 128,951 GHz, τ f = –39.9 ppm/°C.
