Melting layer usually exists in precipitation where ice particles gradually melt into liquid particles. Utilizing the detection from the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar onboard Global Precipitation Measurement Mission Core Observatory during 2018-2022, this paper investigates the quasi-global climatological features of Melting layer over 65°S ~65°N and analyzes the relationships with elevation in the golden case involving the section along 32.5°N across China. The distribution of Melting layer is latitude-dependent: Melting layer is higher in 30°S~30°N and decrease toward the mid-and high-latitude, which are generally lower in 30°S~65°S throughout the year. The height and thickness of Melting layer change more dramatically in mid-and high latitudes than in low latitudes for diurnal variations. The higher elevation terrain has the lower Melting layer top height than other terrains, yet the geometric thickness of Melting layer is also thinner. A golden case is selected to represent the analysis of Melting layer play role in rainfall. When the Melting layer grow thinner with steeply rising elevation due to the thermal change and orographic uplift, there is weak rain with a greater number of smaller raindrops in the golden case. This paper develops a new operational early warning system (EWS) model based on the economy cycle theory for predicting shipping market crises. To achieve this goal this paper analyses and extends the early warning system by constructing the 'climate index'. Taking industry capacity and profit level into account, several indicators are selected for the synthesis of climate index. These indicators are divided into three categories of the leading, coincident and lagging with time difference correlation analysis and cluster analysis approach. Advantageously accessible to extensive resources, multiple datasets are available for the selected indicators. In terms of the economic cycle theory, diffusion and composite indices of global shipping prosperity are presented by using the factor analysis, predicts composite indices and market situation with the climate index curve and signals. As an empirical example, a climate index for Shanghai container shipping market is developed in order to demonstrate its potential usefulness as an early warning system. It turns out this model can provide a powerful tool for the operators and investors to understand the market trend and avoid the price risk. As clean, renewable energy, photovoltaic (PV) energy can reduce the ozone-layer loss and climate deterioration caused by the use of traditional types of energy to generate electricity. At present, most PV energy products involve the influence of cloud cover on solar radiation. However, the resolution and precision of most cloud cover data are not fine enough to reflect the actual cloud distribution in local areas. This leads to incorrect distribution results of PV energy in areas with high-spatial-variability clouds. Using high-resolution and high-precision cloud cover data obtained by satellite remote sensing to estimate the distribution of PV energy can solve this problem. In this study, the Global Land High-Resolution Cloud Climatology (GLHCC), a 10-day cloud frequency product with a resolution of 1 km and located in China, was used to construct a cloud-based solar radiation estimation model. Using the inverse relationship between cloud cover and solar radiation, the GLHCC was converted into sunshine percentage data. Using meteorological station data in China, a Least Squares Fit (LSF) and error check were carried out on the A-P, Lqbal, Bahel and Sen Models to determine the optimal solar radiation estimation model (Sen Model). Based on the sunshine percentage data, the Sen Model and terrain shielding factors, the distribution of PV energy in China was estimated. Finally, comparing to the Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) of the World Bank and the yearly average global irradiance of the Photovoltaic Geographic Information System (PVGIS), PV energy data in this paper more accurately reflected the distribution of PV energy in China, especially in areas with high-spatial-variability clouds. As global warming intensifies, efforts to understand the changes in extreme climate events have increased in recent years. A combined analysis of the changes in extreme temperature and precipitation events is presented in this paper. Using observational data from 1961 to 2015, a set of hotter and wetter (HW) events is defined, and we examine the changes in these events across China. The results show that more HW events occur in Central and Eastern China than in other subregions, especially in South China (SC). The rate of increase in HW events is 2.7 and 1.9 per decade in SC and East China (EC), respectively. In China, most HW events occurred in the last 20 years of the study period, indicating that China entered a period of high-frequency HW events. Indeed, the range in anomalies in the torrential rain days is greater than that of the high-temperature days in Northwest China (NWC), Central China (CC), and EC after the mid- to late 1990s. The opposite pattern is found in Northeast China (NEC), Southwest China-region 1 (SWC1), Southwest China-region 2 (SWC2), and SC. Low-level temperature inversions play crucial roles in inhibiting vertical exchange of energy and mass, and may lead to air pollutants accumulation. The climatological study of them provides a fundamental overview of the static stability of atmosphere and is indispensable for air pollution controls. Based on high-vertical-resolution radiosondes at 00 and 12 UTC during 2011–2018, this work comprehensively examined the spatial and temporal variability of three characteristics (occurrences, strengths, and depths) of low-level inversions in China. Results revealed that inversions are prevalent (more than 80% of the observation records) over Eastern China. The northern part of Eastern China is dominated by the thick strong surface-based inversions with median thickness and strength of 200 m and 3 K, while the southern part by thin weak elevated ones of 80 m and 0.8 K. Tibetan Plateau experiences rare inversions (less than 50% of the time) which tend to be strong thick surface-based inversions with median depth and intensity of 170 m and 4 K. Inversion depths and strengths are positively correlated. The three properties of inversions present remarkable seasonal variations. Generally, inversions are strongest, thickest, and most frequent in winter and least so in summer, with median intensity and depth ranging from 0.3 K and 80 m to 5 K and 220 m. This paper also analyzed the monthly variations of inversions of four representative stations (Harbin, Urumqi, Beijing, and Chongqing) in details. These four cities are known for frequent severe air pollution events. The quantitative investigations of inversions may play a significant role in atmospheric environmental management. Variability in soil moisture has implications for regional terrestrial environments under a warming climate. This paper focuses on the spatiotemporal variability in the intra-annual persistence of soil moisture in China using the fifthgeneration reanalysis dataset by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts for the period 1979-2018. The results show that in China, the mean intra-annual persistence in the humid to arid zones increased from 60 to 115 days in the lower layer but decreased from 19 to 13 days and from 25 to 14 days in the upper and root layers, respectively. However, these changes were strongly attenuated in extremely dry and wet regions due to the scarcity of soil moisture anomalies. Large changes in persistence occurred in the lower soil layer in dryland areas, with a mean difference of up to 40 days between the 2010s and the 1980s. Overall increasing trends dominated the large-scale spatial features, despite regional decreases in the eastern arid zone and the North and Northeast China plains. In the root layer, the two plains experienced an expanded decrease while on the Tibetan Plateau it was dominated by decadal variability. These contrasting changes between the lower and root layers along the periphery of the transition zone was a reflection of the enhanced soil hydrological cycle in the root layer. The enhanced persistence in drylands lower layer is an indication of the intensified impacts of soil moisture anomalies (e.g., droughts) on terrestrial water cycle. Employees' work well-being (WWB) is vital to employees' performance and organizations' sustainable development. This study aims to explore the role of psychological safety and error management climate (EMC) between humble leadership and WWB in Chinese organizations. Drawing upon social information processing theory, a multi-level study was conducted to test the underlying mechanisms between humble leadership and employees' WWB. A time-lagged data of 221 team members was collected from 12 small and medium sized companies in China. Results showed that team-level humble leadership was positively related to WWB. Psychological safety and EMC both played a partial mediating role linking humble leadership and WWB. EMC positively moderated the relationship between humble leadership and psychological safety. This paper contributes to revealing the multi-level effects of humble leadership on work well-being. These findings also provide some important implications for managerial practices. This paper reinvestigated the climate-crop yield relationship with the statistical model at crops' growing stage scale. Compared to previous studies, our model introduced monthly climate variables in the production function of crops, which enables separating the yield changes induced by climate change and those caused by inputs variation and technique progress, as well as examining different climate effects during each growing stage of crops. By applying the fixed effect regression model with province-level panel data of crop yields, agricultural inputs, and the monthly climate variables of temperature and precipitation from 1985 to 2015, we found that the effects of temperature generally are negative and those of precipitation generally are positive, but they vary among different growth stages for each crop. Specifically, GDDs (i.e., growing degree days) have negative effects on spring maize's yield except for the sowing and ripening stages; the effects of precipitation are negative in September for summer maize. Precipitation in December and the next April is significantly harmful to the yield of winter wheat; while, for the spring wheat, GDDs have positive effects during April and May, and precipitation has negative effects during the ripening period. In addition, we computed climate-induced losses based on the climate-crop yield relationship, which demonstrated a strong tendency for increasing yield losses for all crops, with large interannual fluctuations. Research has shown that the climate in northwest China has turned to warm-wet in recent decades. Does this mean that the entire northwest of China has become wet in the last few decades? In the context of the climate transition in northwest China, this paper investigates whether the Bosten Lake Basin (BLB) located in southern Xinjiang has been dry or wet in the last 30 years. We used the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and Temperature Vegetation Drought Index (TVDI) to investigate these changes. The results show that although the dry-wet changes indicated by the SPEI and TVDI exhibited slight spatiotemporal differences, the entire BLB reflected a tendency to be dry. That is, the BLB has not become wet during the climate transition in northwest China, but is developing a trend toward aridification. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) The SPEI indicated a drying trend in seasonal and interannual variations in plains; in mountains, except in spring and summer it has a drying trend, too. (2) The TVDI showed that although the drying trend in summer and winter was weaker than that in spring and autumn in the BLB, where some regions represented a significant tendency toward wetness owing to seasonal or annual changes, the entire study area has still become more dry. In this paper, 16 cities representing four major architectural climate zones of China were selected, and the heating and cooling loads of office building during the period of 1961–2017 were simulated by using TRNSYS software. Daily extreme heating and cooling loads were determined by percentile methods, and the climate change impact on extreme loads was analyzed. The results showed that the days of extreme heating load of office building significantly decreased in almost all the selected cities, whereas there were no significant changes in the days of extreme cooling load. The daily extreme heating load was dominantly affected by the temperature (R2 = 0.43–0.79), but the daily extreme cooling load was related to multiple climate factors, including temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation. Single temperature can only explain 3–37% of the changes of daily extreme cooling load, and the combination of multiple climate factors can explain 58–85%. Importantly, the effect of temperature on extreme cooling load showed decrease from the cold to hot climate zones, but the impacts of relative humidity and solar radiation gradually increased. These results suggest that the maximum design capacity of heating systems can properly decrease, and the design capacity of cooling systems may not largely increase with the climate warming. In addition, the combined effect of multiple climate factors rather than the single temperature, as well as the different responses of extreme cooling energy consumption to climate change in different climate zones, should be considered when making measures for improving operating efficiency of air-conditioning system. Climate classification aims to divide a given region into distinct groups on the basis of meteorological variables, and it has important applications in fields such as agriculture and buildings. In this paper, we propose a novel spectral clustering–based method to partition 661 meteorological stations in China into several zones. First, the correlations are analyzed among five meteorological variables: daily average temperature, average relative humidity, sunshine hours, diurnal temperature range, and atmospheric pressure. The resulting weak linear correlation supports the classification under multiple views. Next, a similarity matrix/graph is constructed by combining the advantages of k-nearest-neighbor and sparse subspace representation. The blocking effect of the similarity matrix confirms the rationality of the classification. Then, we consider respectively the climate classification under a single view and multiple views. For the single view, atmospheric pressure has the highest imbalance degree, and sunshine hours and diurnal temperature range have the strongest classification consistency. The consistency rates are improved evidently in a multiple-view situation. Afterward, we propose a determining method for the number of clusters and make a sensitivity analysis on various parameters. Finally, we provide a further statistical analysis on the classification results and compare the consistency with another climate dataset. The application of a photovoltaic (PV) system for zero energy buildings is crucial to balance energy consumption. This paper investigated the potential of PV systems for buildings in different climate zones of China. The tilt angle, orientation, plot ratio, PV conversion efficiency and location were selected to study their influences on electricity production. The performance of the PV system was analyzed based on a residential building, and employed RETScreen in combination with TRNSYS. The results indicate that southwest China is the best place to develop zero energy buildings. Low-rise residential buildings can realize zero energy in China when the PV conversion efficiency is higher than 20%. However, an energy balance only occurs in the southwest when the PV conversion efficiency is 10%. For different building heights, with a high conversion efficiency (20%), the energy consumptions rates are less than 15 kW h/m2a all over China. In the southeast, the effect of the building shape on energy generation can be ignored due to the high solar elevation angle in the summer. Although the optimal tilt angle varies for different cities, the energy deviations are less than 10% when tilt angle is within 10° of the optimal angle. This study proposed a formula to evaluate the potential of a building PV system. The maximum difference between the simulated and calculated results is approximately 10%, which is reasonable and acceptable. The systematic bias of the estimated average temperature using daily Tmax and Tmin records relative to the standard average temperature of four time-equidistant observations and its effect on the estimated trend of long-term temperature change have not been well understood. This paper attempts to evaluate the systematic bias across mainland China using the daily data of national observational stations. The results revealed that the positive bias of annual mean temperature was large, reaching 0.58°C nationally on average; regional average bias was lowest in the northwest arid region and highest in the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau; the bias was low in spring and summer and high in autumn and winter, reaching its lowest point in mid- and late May and highest point in early November. Furthermore, the bias showed a significant upward trend in the past 50 years, with a rising rate of 0.021°C (10 yr)−1, accounting for about 12% of the overall warming as estimated from the data of the observational network; the largest positive trend bias was found in the northwest arid region, while the east monsoon region experienced the smallest change; the most remarkable increase of the bias occurred after early 1990s. These results indicate that the customarily applied method to calculate daily and monthly mean temperature using Tmax and Tmin significantly overestimates the climatological mean and the long-term trend of surface air temperature in mainland China. Background: During the Omicron pandemic, clinical first-line nurses played a crucial role in healthcare. Their innovative behavior enhanced the quality of nursing and served as a vital factor in driving the sustainable development of the nursing discipline and healthcare industry. Many previous studies have confirmed the significance of nurses' innovative behavior worldwide. However, the correlations among innovative behaviors, organizational innovation climate, self-transcendence, and their mediating roles in Chinese clinical first-line nurses need further research. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, and the quality reporting conformed to the STROBE Checklist. From March 2022 to February 2023, a convenience sample of 1,058 Chinese clinical first-line nurses was recruited from seven tertiary grade-A hospitals of Tianjin city in Northern China. The Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Nurse Innovative Behavior Scale (NIBS), Nurse Organizational Innovation Climate Scale, and the Self-Transcendence Scale were used. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and process plug-in mediation effect analyses. Results: The total scores of innovative behavior, organizational innovation climate, and self-transcendence were 33.19 ± 6.71, 68.88 ± 12.76, and 41.25 ± 7.83, respectively. Innovative behavior was positively correlated with the organizational innovation climate (r = 0.583, p < 0.01) and self-transcendence (r = 0.635, p < 0.01). Self-transcendence partially mediated mediating role between innovative behavior and organizational innovation climate, accounting for 41.7%. Conclusion: The innovative behavior, organizational innovation climate, and self-transcendence among the first-line nurses during the Omicron pandemic were relatively moderate, which needs improving. Organizational innovation climate can directly affect the innovative behavior among Chinese clinical first-line nurses and indirectly through the mediating role of self-transcendence. It is recommended that nursing managers adjust their management strategies and techniques based on the unique characteristics of nurses during the pandemic. This includes fostering a positive and inclusive environment for organizational innovation, nurturing nurses' motivation and awareness for innovation, enhancing their ability to gather information effectively, overcoming negative emotions resulting from the pandemic, and promoting personal growth. The engagement in research, as the primary form of learning engagement for PhD students, is crucial for enhancing their competitive edge. Academic passion, a key determinant of learning engagement, plays a significant role in driving the research enthusiasm of PhD students. However, the "black box" concerning whether and how academic passion influences PhD students' research engagement remains to be explored. Addressing this gap, the present study draws upon self-determination theory, adopts the "motivation-behavior-effect" analytical framework, and incorporates ambidextrous learning as a mediator to elucidate the specific pathway through which academic passion impacts PhD students' engagement in research activities. Furthermore, it examines the facilitating role of the academic climate in this process. From December 2022 to March 2023, a questionnaire survey was conducted, collecting 522 responses from PhD students across 25 universities in China. The survey primarily assessed the PhD students' academic passion, ambidextrous learning behaviors (including tendencies towards exploratory and exploitative learning), and their perceived academic climate, investigating how these factors collectively influence their engagement in research activities. The questionnaire data were analyzed using a combination of SEM and bootstrapping with SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.3 software. The findings reveal that academic passion significantly positively affects PhD students' research engagement; ambidextrous learning (exploratory and exploitative learning) mediates the relationship between academic passion and PhD students' research engagement; and the academic climate effectively facilitates the transformation of PhD students' academic passion into ambidextrous learning (exploratory and exploitative learning). The study's conclusions not only foster PhD students' enthusiasm for research but also enhance learning effectiveness and innovation vitality, providing a theoretical basis for reforming the doctoral training system. Climate is an important tourism resource and a vital component of the attractiveness of a destination. Climate has a strong impact on supply and demand in the tourism industry. Most studies concerning the distribution of tourism climate resources are based on point measurements from meteorological stations. Tourism climate distribution maps with high resolution are required. In this paper, the tourism climate index (TCI) and spatial interpolation based on polynomial regression are used to analyze the distribution of summer tourism climate resources in China. The results indicate that there exists an obvious positive linear relationship between the TCI and latitude and a quadratic relationship between the TCI and elevation. The tourism climate is unfavorable in 8% of the study area, acceptable in 34% of the study area, good and very good in 36% of the study area, and excellent in 22% of the study area. From the perspective of climate, the places comfortable for summer tourism are mainly concentrated to the north of 35°N, on the second elevation step, and in the temperate continental climate zone. Results indicate that: the precipitation was mainly concentrated in summer, followed by autumn. The annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation except June and August had decreasing trends, and the magnitudes of precipitation decrease were more pronounced in spring, April and November. The change patterns varied for extreme precipitation indices. The temporal variation in extreme precipitation indices indicated that the extreme precipitation events had mainly increased during 1971-1990 and 1991-2017, and decreased during 1951-1970 and 1951-2017, especially, increased more pronounced during 1991-2017 and decreased more pronounced during 1951-1970. The precipitation exhibited a fluctuant change from increase to decrease, then increase to decrease and finally increase trends, and there was an abrupt change point in 1965. This paper evaluates the monthly mean air temperature over complex terrain in China determined using two methods: Australian National University spline and GridMet_Climate_Temperature (grid meteorological and climatic temperature (GMCT)) models. It is found that the macroscopic patterns of the temperature distributions by the two methods are very similar. The comparison of modelled temperatures with observations from 40 verification stations shows that both methods have the same value of total mean absolute bias errors (MABE) of 0.43 °C. Since the observational data used are from meteorological observational stations which are located on horizontal flat and open areas, these evaluation results only represent those on the flat open areas. In order to evaluate the effects of topographical factors on the temperature, a concept of relief amplitude is defined. The temperatures are grouped according to range of the relief amplitudes, and variation of temperature with relief amplitudes is worked out. It is found that the temperature difference between the two models varies significantly with relief amplitudes. The averaged maximum difference can be as large as 12 °C in January when the relief amplitude is greater than 700 m. The reasons for the temperature difference are investigated, and they are due to the effects of topographical slopes and aspects. One model (GMCT) includes these effects while the other does not. The evaluation results demonstrate that it is necessary to include the effects of topographical factors in the model simulation in order to produce realistic temperature distributions in the complex terrain areas. The distributions of temperature on the northern and southern slopes are determined using the GMCT model, and the results show that the temperatures on the southern slopes are clearly greater than those of the northern slopes, especially in winter. Since most of these populations reside in mountainous areas, convenient access to medical services is an important metric of how well their livelihoods are being protected. Methods: This paper proposes a medical convenience index (MCI) and computation model for mountain residents, taking into account various conditions including topography, geology, and climate. Data on road networks were used for comprehensive evaluation from three perspectives: vulnerability, complexity, and accessibility. The model is innovative for considering road network vulnerability in mountainous areas, and proposing a method of evaluating road network vulnerability by measuring the impacts of debris flows based on only links. The model was used to compute and rank the respective MCIs for settlements of each ethnic population in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, in 2009 and 2015. Data on the settlements over the two periods were also used to analyze the spatial differentiation of medical convenience levels within the study area. Results: The medical convenience levels of many settlements improved significantly. 80 settlements were greatly improved, while another 103 showed slight improvement.Areas with obvious improvement were distributed in clusters, and mainly located in the southwestern part of Yingjiang County, northern Longchuan County, eastern Lianghe County, and the region where Lianghe and Longchuan counties and Mang City intersect. Recently there has been growing interest in regenerative evaporative coolers (REC), which can reduce the temperature of the supply air to below the wet-bulb of intake air and approach its dew-point. In this paper, we designed, fabricated and experimentally tested a counter-flow REC in laboratory. The REC’s core heat and mass exchanger was fabricated using stacked sheets composed of high wicking evaporation (wickability of available materials was measured) and waterproof aluminium materials. The developed REC system has a much higher cooling performance compared to conventional indirect evaporative cooler. However, the decision to use the REC for China buildings depends on a dedicated evaluation of the net energy saved against the capital expended. Such an evaluation requires the hourly-based data on the availability of cooling capacity provided by the REC for various climates. The paper used an experiment-based method to estimate the cooling capacity and energy savings provided by the proposed REC for China’s various climates. By using the experimental results and regional hourly-based weather data, the energy saving potential of the REC against an equivalent-sized mechanical air conditioner alone was analysed. Based on data from the Gurbantunggut Desert, the largest fixed/semi-fixed desert in China, and ERA5-Land reanalysis data, the long-term variations and spatial surface heat source (SHS) differences in the Gurbantunggut Desert are discussed herein. The results show the following: (1) The hourly SHS at the Kelameili station during the 2013–2021 period was a weak heat source at night; contrastingly, it was a strong heat source during the day. The duration of the hourly SHS increased gradually from January to July, but it decreased gradually from July to December. The daily SHS showed obvious seasonal variation, reaching the maximum in summer and the minimum in winter. The ERA5-Land reanalysis can reproduce all the variation characteristics of the SHS well. (2) The climatology (i.e., multi-year mean) of the monthly SHS intensity was lower than 50 W/m2 during the January–March and September–December periods in the Gurbantunggut Desert, indicating a weak heat source. On the other hand, the climatology recorded in April–August was higher than 50 W/m2, with a strong heat source. From the perspective of spatial distribution, the eastern and western regions of the Gurbantunggut Desert show strong heat sources, while the central region shows weak heat sources. The spatial distribution of the first and second modes of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) decomposition reflected the consistent spatial variability and a north–south (or east–west) polarity variation of the monthly SHS in the Gurbantunggut Desert, respectively. (3) The yearly SHS showed negative anomalies during the 1950–1954, 1964–1982 and 2004–2015 periods, and positive anomalies during the 1955–1963, 1983–2003 and 2016–2021 periods in the Gurbantunggut Desert. Additionally, the time series of the SHS anomalies was positively correlated with the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) index. During the negative IPO phase, the yearly SHS showed a negative anomaly in the Gurbantunggut Desert, while the yearly SHS showed a positive anomaly during the positive IPO phase in most regions of the Gurbantunggut Desert. A better understanding of the effects of climate change and land use/cover change (LUCC) on streamflow promotes the long-term water planning and management in the arid regions of northwestern China. In this paper, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and a separation approach were used to evaluate and separate the effects of climate change and LUCC on streamflow in the Xiying River basin. The SWAT model was calibrated by the hydro-meteorological data from 1980-1989 to obtain the optimum parameters, which were validated by the subsequent application to the period between 1990-2008. Moreover, streamflow under several scenarios with different climate change and land use conditions in 1990-2008 and 2010-2069 were further investigated. Results indicate that, in the period of 1990-2008, the streamflow was dominated by climate change (i.e., changes in precipitation and temperature), which led to a 102.8% increase in the mean annual streamflow, whereas LUCC produced a decrease of 2.8%. Furthermore, in the future period of 2010-2039, the mean annual streamflow will decrease by 5.4% and 4.5% compared with the data of 1961-1990 under scenarios A2 and B2, respectively, while it will decrease by 21.2% and 16.9% in the period of 2040-2069, respectively. Previous studies have examined the projected climate types in China by 2100. This study identified the emergence time of climate shifts at a 1◦ scale over China from 1990 to 2100 and investigated the temporal evolution of Köppen-Geiger climate classifications computed from CMIP5 multi-model outputs. Climate shifts were detected in transition regions (7%-8% of China's land area) by 2010, including rapid replacement of mixed forest (Dwb) by deciduous forest (Dwa) over Northeast China, strong shrinkage of alpine climate type (ET) on the Tibetan Plateau, weak northward expansion of subtropical winterdry climate (Cwa) over Southeast China, and contraction of oceanic climate (Cwb) in Southwest China. Under all future RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) scenarios, the reduction of Dwb in Northeast China and ET on the Tibetan Plateau was projected to accelerate substantially during 2010-30, and half of the total area occupied by ET in 1990 was projected to be redistributed by 2040. Under the most severe scenario (RCP8.5), sub-polar continental winter dry climate over Northeast China would disappear by 2040-50, ET on the Tibetan Plateau would disappear by 2070, and the climate types in 35.9% and 50.8% of China's land area would change by 2050 and 2100, respectively. Aiming at the current situation in China with vast territory, diverse climate, and a big difference on thermal adaptation of the indoor thermal environment among the people in different regions, the paper analyzes the typical model research of thermal adaptation, and points out the features of three representative models and the ignored reason of physiological thermal adaptation, summarizes some results on field studies of thermal adaptation in China, induces three research directions about physiological indexes selection research, physiological thermal adaptation research and multivariate evaluation model research of thermal comfort based on the physical, psychological and behavioral adjustments. The paper proposes to explain the differences of physiological thermal adaptation in these different climatic regions and to further finds out the relations between all these differences and the physiological indexes. The goal is to establish physiological index to evaluate thermal comfort and to perfect the climate adaptation model which can give some advises to the architecture designers on how to realize the comfortable and energy-saving thermal environment. Precipitation time series were analysed using the Mann-Kendall (MK) test and wavelet analysis based on the mean seasonal and annual precipitation from 29 meteorological stations in Jilin Province for the period 1958-2011. Both the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the seasonal and annual precipitation trends and periodicities in different regions in Jilin Province were studied for the first time in this paper. New findings from the intensive calculations and appropriate analysis of data in longer period are as follows: (i) The annual precipitation of Jilin Province has experienced four states: a decrease (1958-1980), increase (1980-1987), decrease (1987-2003) and increase (2003-2011). (ii) The annual precipitation and seasonal precipitation increased from the northwest and northeast of the study area toward the south. (iii) Almost 90 % of the stations showed negative trends in annual precipitation variations. (iv) The trends in spring and winter are mainly increasing, whereas the trends in summer and autumn are mainly decreasing. (v) Jilin Province can be divided into four parts based on the periodicities of annual precipitation sequences: 5-6, 10-20 and 25-30 years in the northwest; 4-8 and 16-25 years in the centre; 7-8 and 13-17 years in the south and 5-10 and 12-17 years in the southeast. Qinling-Daba Mountains (QDM), which are located in central China, are considered as a significant climatic boundary delimiting north and south. However, the influence of complex topographic and climatic features makes it challenging to identify the exact location of the boundary, and different scholars delimit the boundary with significant differences. In addition, there is a gradual transition between climate zones, and no real dividing line exists. To explore the climate regionalization of the QDM, we focused on the identification of the transition zone rather than the exact location of the boundary between subtropical and temperate zones. Thus, we proposed a new workflow for climate regionalization based on the Geodetector-SVM model (a combination of Geodetector and support vector machines). First, we selected the spatial distribution data of six vegetation types (including typical subtropical and temperate vegetation) to represent the spatial distribution of climatic zones. Environmental factors (such as topography, temperature, precipitation, and soil) were used as explanatory variables for the spatial distribution of vegetation. Second, using the Geodetector-SVM model, the distribution characteristics and suitable environment of typical vegetation in different climatic zones are comprehensively explored. By analyzing the multiple boundaries between subtropical and temperate vegetation, the location of the transition zone of the QDM was identified. The results revealed the following: (1) The new workflow for climate regionalization based on the Geodetector-SVM model is powerful for the identification of the transition zone. The q-statistics are generally greater than 0.35, indicating that the transition zone between subtropical and temperate zones can highly reflect the character of the QDM; (2) From west to east, the transition zone mainly passes through the cities of Heishui County, Kang County, Liuba County, and Yichuan County and is approximately 30 km wide. Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) weather reports are a type of high spatiotemporal data currently widely used in weather monitoring and prediction. A recent Chinese AMDAR project began in 2003 has made rapid progress. However, the assessment and accuracy of these Chinese AMDAR reports have yet to be thoroughly discussed. A comparison of temperature and wind observations between Chinese AMDAR reports and rawinsonde data between 2004 and 2010 is conducted in this paper. Results demonstrate that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) between these two sets of data is 1.40°C for temperature, 3.56 m s−1 for wind speed, and 28° for wind direction. Because of the particularity of observation and inversion method, comparison results are not only affected by AMDAR measurement and reporting error but also by spatial and temporal representativeness, flight phases, and the environment. The North China Famine of 1876–1879, known in Chinese as the Dingwu qihuang (丁戊奇荒), is a famous case of drought-induced famine in Chinese history. The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical and historical evidence for understanding the impacts of extreme climate events and major disasters and the mechanisms of adaptation. From the aspects of famine-related migration and the allocation of relief money and grain, the regional interactions in social responses to extreme climate events were analyzed. This paper collected 186 records from historical documents. Regarding the regions as the nodes and the relationships between regions as the links, the spatial patterns of famine-related migration and the allocation of money and grain from 1877 to 1878 were rebuilt. The results show that, firstly, famine-related migration appeared to be spontaneous and short-distanced, with the flow mainly spreading to the surrounding areas and towns. Secondly, as a state administrative action, the relief money and grain from the non-disaster areas were distributed to the disaster areas. However, the distribution of relief grain affected the equilibrium of the food market in non-disaster areas, which led to fluctuations in food prices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extreme climate events frequently exert serious effects on terrestrial vegetation activity. However, these effects are still uncertain in widely distributed areas with different climate zones. Transect analysis is important to understand how terrestrial vegetation responds to climate change, especially extreme climate events, by substituting space for time. In this paper, seven extreme climate indices and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are employed to examine changes in the extreme climate events and vegetation activity. To reduce the uncertainty of the NDVI, two satellite-derived NDVI datasets, including the third generation Global Inventory Monitoring and Modeling System (GIMMS-3g) NDVI dataset and the NDVI from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites on Star Web Servers (SWS), were employed to capture changes in vegetation activity. The impacts of climate extremes on vegetation activity were then assessed over the period of 1982–2012 using the North–South Transect of Eastern China (NSTEC) as a case. The results show that vegetation activity was overall strengthened from 1982 to 2012 in the NSTEC. In addition, extreme high temperature events revealed an increased trend of approximately 5.15 days per decade, while a weakened trend (not significant) was found in extreme cold temperature events. The strengthened vegetation activities could be associated with enhanced extreme high temperature events and weakened extreme cold temperature events over the past decades in most of the NSTEC. Despite this, inversed changes were also found locally between vegetation activity and extreme climate events (e.g., in the Northeast Plain). These phenomena could be associated with differences in vegetation type, human activity, as well as the combined effects of the frequency and intensity of extreme climate events. Using a 10‐year data set of cloud‐to‐ground lightning (CG) flashes, the climatological characteristics of ±CG flashes with a large peak current (>75 kA or <−75 kA) (±LPCCGs) are for the first time obtained in China's most populous areas in terms of density distribution, seasonal variation, and monthly and diurnal evolution. The results show that the distribution of +LPCCG flashes has evident seasonal variations, while the activity center of −LPCCG flashes always remains in Southwest China. The diurnal evolution of +LPCCG flash percentages in southern China's Mainland shows an opposite trend to that in the north. Furthermore, the peak current distributions of +LPCCG flashes in most of China's mainland are found to be distinct from those shown in other regions of the world. Additionally, Southwest China is found to be an important and special area for LPCCG flash activity in China. Not only is it the density center of ±LPCCG flashes, but the peak current distribution of −LPCCG flashes in this region also shows an evidently different pattern from those in other regions. The diurnal evolution of the ‐LPCCG/+LPCCG flash frequencies in Southwest China also shows a different pattern from that in other regions. Plain Language Summary: This study exhibits the climatological characteristics of CG with a large peak current (LPCCG) in China's most populous areas for the first time. The acceleration of urbanization and the growth of population are considered to be the reasons of increasing demands for construction, life quality and energy consumption. This leads to more research in climate adaptive strategies such as traditional design methods, construction techniques and building materials. Traditional dwelling has been successful in achieving harmony between dwelling and climatic environment, which is one of the most important conditions for sustainability. Firstly, this paper focused on analyzing the characteristics of traditional dwellings in Qinba mountainous areas to adapt to the climatic environment. Secondly, two typical dwellings constructed respectively with brick and earth materials were selected for monitoring and simulating of its indoor thermal, luminous and ventilation environment in summer and winter. In addition, the research summarized the advantages and disadvantages of the dwelling's physical environment in response to climatic characteristics. It revealed that the traditional earth dwelling is well adapted to the local climate during summer, although the indoor thermal comfort is not fully satisfactory during winter. Finally, we prompted effective climate adaptive strategies of traditional earth dwelling, such as natural ventilation, thermal insulation and thermal buffer space. Abstract Elucidating the vertical structures of clouds is key to reducing the uncertainty in cloud-induced climate forcing; however, we do not yet know explicitly about the cloud structures that form over Beijing, China, and how they vary. In this paper, we document vertically resolved cloud structures and their climatological variation based on three-year (1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017) ground-based Ka-band (35 GHz) millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR) measurements. Cloud top height (CTH) and radar reflectivity are higher in summer and autumn than in spring and winter. We verified the MMCR measurements of the CTH and cloud base height (CBH) independently based on observations from the Himawari-8 and CL51 ceilometer at the same station, respectively. The CTH decreased as the thickness of the cloud layer increased. This may have been due to the mechanism used to determine the CTH, which was based on data from the satellite infrared channel. There were two peaks in the CBH distribution, located at 0–1 km and 5–6 km, whereas the frequency of the CTH peaked at an altitude of 9–10 km, between 1200 and 1800 LST. Precipitating clouds tended to be located at lower altitudes and exhibited stronger radar reflectivities than non-precipitating clouds. The cloud frequency tended to peak in autumn and reached a minimum in winter. In terms of the seasonality of clouds at various levels, middle- and high-level clouds were dominant over Beijing, with high and low (precipitating) clouds concentrated between May and October. Mid-altitude clouds occurred more frequently in winter and spring. CTH peaked in summer due to the strong solar radiation received by the surface. In contrast, minimum CBH occurred in winter. The cloud heights were higher and radar reflectivities larger than reported in previous studies. These results are correlated with urban warming effects. Understanding the properties of clouds will not only be of benefit to researchers carrying out cloud forcing studies, but will also provide key validation data for climate model simulations. High-quality, freely accessible, long-term precipitation estimates with fine spatiotemporal resolution play essential roles in hydrologic, climatic, and numerical modeling applications. However, the existing daily gridded precipitation datasets over China are either constructed with insufficient gauge observations or neglect topographic effects and boundary effects on interpolation. Using daily observations from 2839 gauges located across China and nearby regions from 1961 to the present, this study compared eight different interpolation schemes that adjusted the climatology based on a monthly precipitation constraint and topographic characteristic correction, using an algorithm that combined the daily climatology field with a precipitation ratio field. Results from these eight interpolation schemes were validated using 45 992 high-density daily gauge observations from 2015 to 2019 across China. Of these eight schemes, the one with the best performance merges the Parameter-elevation Regression on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) in the daily climatology field and interpolates station observations into the ratio field using an inverse-distance weighting method. This scheme had median values of 0.78 for the correlation coefficient, 8.8 mm d -1 for the root-mean-square deviation, and 0.69 for the Kling–Gupta efficiency for comparisons between the 45 992 high-density gauge observations and the best interpolation scheme for the 0.1 ∘ latitude × longitude grid cells from 2015 to 2019. This scheme had the best overall performance, as it fully considers topographic effects in the daily climatology field and it balances local data fidelity and global fitting smoothness in the interpolation of the precipitation ratio field. Therefore, this scheme was used to construct a new long-term, gauge-based gridded precipitation dataset for the Chinese mainland (called CHM_PRE, as a member of the China Hydro-Meteorology dataset) with spatial resolutions of 0.5, 0.25, and 0.1 ∘ from 1961 to the present. This precipitation dataset is expected to facilitate the advancement of drought monitoring, flood forecasting, and hydrological modeling. Based on the numerical simulation in this paper, the local climate of the Majianglong traditional villages in the Lily Town city is analyzed, the influence of the village layout in the traditional villages on the wind environment and the adaptability of Lingnan traditional village layout to the regional climate is studied. The layout characteristics of Majianglong traditional village is the former pond after the village and comb layout. The results show that the traditional grid layout of MajiangLong village obviously influence the microclimate of residential street. The traditional grid layout and relative position of residential plays an important role to the micro-environment of indoor and courtyard. In summer, the area close to the entrance of the cold lane and the edge of residential buildings is a more comfortable wind environment. In recent years, climate extreme events have caused increasing direct economic and social losses in the arid region of northwestern China. Based on daily temperature and precipitation data from 1960 to 2010, this paper discussed the linear trend and abrupt changes of climate indices. The general evolution was obtained by the empirical orthogonal function (EOF), the Mann-Kendall test, and the distribution-free cumulative sum chart (CUSUM) test. The results are as follows: (1) climate showed a warming trend at annual and seasonal scale, with all temperature indices exhibiting statistically significant changes. The warm indices have increased, with 1.37%days/decade of warm days (TX90p), 0.17 °C/decade of warmest days (TXx) and 1.97 days/decade of warm spell duration indicator (WSDI), respectively. The cold indices have decreased, with − 1.89%days/decade, 0.65 °C/decade and − 0.66 days/decade for cold nights (TN10p), coldest nights (TNn) and cold spell duration indicator (CSDI), respectively. The precipitation indices have also increased significantly, coupled with the changes of magnitude (max 1-day precipitation amount (RX1day)), frequency (rain day (R0.1)), and duration (consecutive dry days (CDD)). (2) Abrupt changes of the annual regional precipitation indices and the minimum temperature indices were observed around 1986, and that of the maximum temperature indices were observed in 1996. (3) The EOF1 indicated the overall coherent distribution for the whole study area, and its principal component (PC1) was also observed, showing a significant linear trend with an abrupt change, which were in accordance with the regional observation results. EOF2 and EOF3 show contrasts between the southern and northern study areas, and between the eastern and western study areas, respectively, whereas no significant tendency was observed for their PCs. Hence, the climate indices have changed significantly, with linear trends and abrupt changes noted for all climate indices, which will have serious impacts on water resources and ecological environment in the arid region of China. The long-term characteristics of four hydrometeor species (cloud water, cloud ice, rain, and snow) in precipitating clouds over eastern China (divided into South China, Jianghuai, and North China) and their relationships with surface rainfall are first investigated using the fifth major global reanalysis produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA5) hourly dataset from May to August during 1979–2020. The results show that the cloud water path decreases significantly from south to north as a result of the large-scale circulation and water vapor distribution, with the maximum value of 180 g m−2 in South China and only one-half of that value in North China. The slope in linear relationship between rainwater path and precipitation intensity is at the maximum (5.68 h−1) in South China, implying the highest conversion rate from rainwater to precipitation in this region. When the precipitation rate exceeds 15 mm h−1, the ice-phase hydrometeor contents in South China become the largest among the three regions, indicating that the cold-rain process is crucial to heavy rainfall. The moisture-related processes play a dominant role in the precipitation intensity. Although the contribution of hydrometeor advection to precipitation is generally between −5% and 5%, we found that it can jointly modulate the location of heavy rainfall. In addition, the peaks of cloud water path commonly appear 2–3 h ahead of precipitation, whereas the peaks of ice-phase particles occur 2 and 1 h behind the afternoon precipitation onset in South China and Jianghuai, respectively, which is mainly attributed to the different upward velocity and water vapor convergence in the mid–upper troposphere. Significance Statement: Reanalysis data and satellite retrievals have been widely used in investigating cloud water and cloud ice in nonprecipitating clouds. However, studies on long-term characteristics of precipitating hydrometeors in precipitating clouds, which are directly connected and crucial to surface rainfall, are still very limited to date because of limitations in observations of precipitating clouds. In this study, the latest ERA5 reanalysis hourly dataset is first used to quantitatively explore the climatological characteristics of four hydrometeors (cloud water, cloud ice, rain, and snow) in precipitating clouds as well as their relationships with precipitation intensity over eastern China from 1979 to 2020. Based on severe weather reports, surface precipitation observations, surface routine observations, and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ERA5 reanalysis dataset during the warm seasons (May–September) of 2011–2018 over North China, this paper analyzes the statistical characteristics and environmental conditions of three types of severe convective events. Results are compared between events with different altitudes (i.e., mountains and plains), severities (i.e., ordinary and significant), and months. Hail and thunderstorm high winds (THWs) are more common over the mountains whereas short-duration heavy rainfall (SDHR) is more frequent over the plains. The occurrence frequency of severe convective events exhibits distinct monthly and diurnal variations. Analyses of the environmental parameters provide reference for the potential forecasting of severe convective events over this region. Specifically, the 850–500 hPa temperature lapse rate (LR85), pseudo-equivalent potential temperature at 500 hPa (thetase500), and precipitable water (PW) are skillful in distinguishing hail and THW environments from SDHR environments, and thetase500 is useful in discriminating between hail and THW environments. The convective environments over the plains are characterized by significantly higher (lower) PW (LR85) compared with mountains. The skill of these parameters in forecasting the severity of the convective hazards is limited. Probability distributions in the two parameters space indicate that the occurrence of significant hail requires both higher most unstable convective available potential energy (MUCAPE) and stronger 0–6 km bulk wind shear (SHR6) compared with ordinary hail. Compared with ordinary THWs, the significant THWs over the mountains depend more on the SHR6 whereas those over the plains rely more on the MUCAPE. The significant SDHR events over the plains tend to occur under a variety of instability conditions. Although visibility is a widely-used indicator to quantify the aerosol loadings, only a few studies have been analyzed the representativeness of visibility in deriving Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT). In this paper, ground-based visibility, MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) monthly AOT products between July 2002 and December 2014 were analyzed in order to extract the dominant modes of variability using the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method. The method has significant merit to reduce data dimension and examine both spatial and temporal variability simultaneously. Results indicated that the satellite retrieved AOTs agreed well with ground-based visibility in terms of inter-annual variability. The correlation coefficients in the first deseasonalized mode are greater than 0.65 between visibility and satellite AOT products. However, large differences were observed in the seasonal variability between ground-based visibility and AOT. In addition, Aerosol vertical distribution from LIdar climatology of Vertical Aerosol Structure for space-based lidar simulation studies (LIVAS) and cloud data from ground-based meteorological station were used to investigate the seasonal variability disagreement. The AOT values derived from LIVAS extinction coefficients between 0 and 500 m above surface have a stronger relationship with visibility, than total column AOT with visibility. It also indicates that seasonal variation of aerosol vertical distribution is the main cause of the disagreement between two parameters, and the uncertainties of satellite products also contribute to the disagreement. Results in this study highlighted that the visibility observation could only be used to depict the inter-annual AOT and more ancillary information could be used for studying seasonal AOT variation. Climatic zoning is an important tool in building energy policy and regulations, smaller and more homogeneous climate zones could help enhance the rationality of energy policymaking. In most countries, climate zoning is based on simplified climate models, and it is difficult to accurately represent the energy demand characteristics of buildings. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel climate subdivision method that tackles the complex relations between climate and building energy-efficient, which move from traditional weather-based approaches to a performance-based approach. Integrate the uncertainty analysis method and the building dynamic performance simulation to extract a novel statistically significant index as the basis for classification. The K -means clustering method and discriminant analysis method are used to obtain and verify the clustering results, respectively. Furthermore, the comparison with clustering results based on degree days confirms the superiority of the new method proposed in this paper in identifying building energy demand. The method is applied to the cold climate zone of China as a showcase. The results show significant differences in building energy demand and the order of key features affecting building performance between each region in the climatic zones. The zone can be further sub-divided into four groups considering the climate factor and building feature uncertainty, and clustering results have been verified by several evaluation indicators. Systematically observing components of the climate system as well as their processes and interactions are crucial to understand the weather, climate, climate change, etc. In order to launch long-term, continuous, stereoscopic, and integrated meteorological observations for key regions of the climate system in southwestern China where it is sensitive to interactions among multiple layers and exchanges of mass and energy, the Dali National Climate Observatory (DNCO) was established in May 2006. To date, the DNCO has gradually performed an integrated meteorological observation network in a complex terrain region over the southeastern Tibetan Plateau including the conventional observations of weather and climate, and the special observations of radiation, lightning, soil moisture, wind profile, water vapor, water quality, water level, water temperature profile, turbulent fluxes of momentum, sensible heat, latent heat, carbon dioxide, and methane, etc. Furthermore, the DNCO mainly focuses on the field observation experiments and scientific research activities for mountain meteorology. This paper presents an overview of the DNCO including its location, climatology, scientific objectives, research tasks, and existing observation projects. The progresses in observation and associated research including data quality controls and assessments, recent observation results, and regional numerical model tests are summarized. Understanding the lightning climatological distribution is of great significance but remains challenging which is in part due to the lack of continuous and uniform lightning observations. In this paper, for the first time, an 11-year ground-based cloud-to-cloud lightning dataset of China National Lightning Detection Network from 2010 to 2020 is used to investigate the lightning climatology over China's land area in terms of spatial distribution, seasonal, monthly and diurnal variations. Lightning activity in China's land area generally decreases from south to north and from east to west. The mean cloud-to-ground lightning density of China's land area is 0.9 fl km−2 yr−1, with the average maximums (exceeding 10 fl km−2 yr−1) are found in the south and east coastal provinces, such as Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian and Zhejiang Province. The lightning activity in spring, summer and autumn seems consistent throughout the daytime cycle, with the lightning activity is rather weak in the morning and most active in the afternoon, while winter lightning appears to be more active in the nighttime and in the very early morning produced from nocturnal thunderstorms. The cloud-to-ground lightning activity in the tropical and subtropical areas within 15–25°N is mainly concentrated in the late spring and early summer, with two weak peaks in May and August, while lightning in mid latitudes within 25–55°N mainly occurs in the summer (June–July-August). The percentage of positive cloud-to-ground lightning flashes with peak current higher than 75 kA is more than 3 times than that of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes. Meanwhile, the mean peak current of cloud-to-ground lightning flashes shows an inverse diurnal pattern to the cloud-to-ground lightning activity. • Cloud-to-ground lightning climatology over Chinese continent is first investigated. • Lightning activity generally decreases from south to north and from east to west. • More lightning occurs in the summer in mid latitudes within 25–55°N. • Winter lightning is unique, usually produced from nocturnal thunderstorms. Thundersnow is a special kind of thunderstorm that combines snowfall and lightning. A 10‐year thundersnow climatology over China was obtained based on observations during 2008–2017. Our results show that thundersnows are widely distributed in China, and most of the high‐frequency areas are located in the Tibetan Plateau and northeastern China. The average frequency of thundersnow decreases with decreasing altitude, and thundersnow usually occurs at low‐altitude stations once every 10 years. Thundersnow, which likely induces great total snowfall depths, appears mostly in spring, autumn and late winter and can occur in high‐altitude areas in summer. The blizzard probability on a thundersnow day is 12.7%. The percentage of positive cloud‐to‐ground lightning of winter thundersnow is approximately 20.7%, which is lower than those in other seasons. The negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation and anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone are favorable background conditions for thundersnow events. Plain Language Summary: Though the snowfall process is different from common rainfall processes that are accompanied by lightning, it can also occasionally produce lightning. This special type of thunderstorm is called thundersnow. It can induce heavy snowfall, which results in partial paralysis of modern cities. Electrified winter clouds may pose an aviation hazard. Although the frequency of thundersnow is low, it is widely distributed in China. Thundersnow can occur throughout the year, mainly in February‐May and October‐November. Thundersnow events increase the probability of blizzards, especially in the Shandong Peninsula in spring, North China and the Changbai Mountain in autumn, and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin and Bohai Rim in winter. The variations of the thundersnow number are closely associated with extratropical atmospheric circulation anomalies. The climatological and atmospheric conditions of thundersnow in China that are revealed by this study help establish an important basis for thundersnow forecasting. Mineral-associated organic carbon (MOC), that is stabilized by fine soil particles (i.e., silt plus clay, <53 μm), is important for soil organic carbon (SOC) persistence and sequestration, due to its large contribution to total SOC (TSOC) and long turnover time. Our objectives were to investigate how climate, soil type, soil texture, and agricultural managements affect MOC contributions to TSOC in China. We created a dataset from 103 published papers, including 1106 data points pairing MOC and TSOC across three major land use types: cropland, grassland, and forest. Overall, the MOC/TSOC ratio ranged from 0.27 to 0.80 and varied significantly among soil groups in cropland, grassland, and forest. Croplands and forest exhibited significantly higher median MOC/TSOC ratios than in grassland. Moreover, forest and grassland soils in temperate regions had higher MOC/TSOC ratios than in subtropical regions. Furthermore, the MOC/TSOC ratio was much higher in ultisol, compared with the other soil types. Both the MOC content and MOC/TSOC ratio were positively correlated with the amount of fine fraction (silt plus clay) in soil, highlighting the importance of soil texture in stabilizing organic carbon across various climate zones. In cropland, different fertilization practices and land uses (e.g., upland, paddy, and upland-paddy rotation) significantly altered MOC/TSOC ratios, but not in cropping systems (e.g., mono- and double-cropping) characterized by climatic differences. This study demonstrates that the MOC/TSOC ratio is mainly driven by soil texture, soil types, and related climate and land uses, and thus the variations in MOC/TSOC ratios should be taken into account when quantitatively estimating soil C sequestration potential of silt plus clay particles on a large scale. Examining the effects of climate change on spring maize, and its suitability under dynamic cultivation patterns, will aid strategic decision-making for future agricultural adaptation. This paper investigates the climate suitability of spring maize, based on daily data from 50 meteorological stations, and statistics on maize yield and area at the county level in Jilin Province, China, between 1986 and 2015. Based on a significant correlation between the cultivation patterns indicator ≥10 °C accumulated temperature (AAT10) and the average yield (R2 = 0.503), the yield data are used to determine suitable thresholds for meteorological factors under the dynamic cultivation pattern, and a fuzzy fitness approach is used to evaluate the climate suitability. The results showed a good agreement between suitability estimates and scaled observed yields (average d = 0.705). Moreover, good consistency between cultivation patterns, climate suitability and yield show that the late-maturing varieties of maize have gradually moved northward and eastward, and the areas of high suitability and high yield have gradually expanded eastward. In addition, drought and chilling hazard factors limit the suitability of climate resources, especially in the eastern and western regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolution of hydroclimate in East Asia during the Pliocene—a potential analog of the future greenhouse climate—remains highly uncertain. Here we reconstruct changes in the hydroclimate of Northern China during this epoch. Our results reveal previously undocumented severe drought conditions that persisted through the early Pliocene with a significantly greater magnitude than suggested by other records. Using a broad hierarchy of climate simulations, we find that reduction in the Pacific meridional sea surface temperature (SST) gradient has particularly strong impacts on precipitation over Northern China, which suggests its key role in maintaining drought conditions during the early Pliocene. The weaker Pacific meridional SST gradient causes the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon precipitation over this region via a reduction of atmospheric northward moisture transport from the ocean, which enhances aridity inland. Our results highlight the fundamental control of the tropical ocean on the extra‐tropical hydrological cycle. Plain Language Summary: Understanding East Asian rainfall changes with global warming is an important issue of climate sciences. The Pliocene epoch provides a potential analog to the future greenhouse climate. Here, for the first time we reconstruct high‐resolution aridity changes over the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) in northern East Asia during the Pliocene. Our results indicate persistent drought conditions over CLP during the early Pliocene. Analyzing a broad range of climate model simulations, we find that the reduced meridional sea surface temperature gradient is a critical factor in the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon over Northern China and in maintaining drought conditions during the early Pliocene relative to the late Pliocene. Our results expand the Asian inland paleoclimate records during the Pliocene, providing new information on past Asian monsoon precipitation variations during the warm Pliocene with potential implications for future hydroclimate changes under greenhouse warming in East Asia. Peatlands contain large amount of carbon stock that is vulnerable to release into the atmosphere. Mostly because of human impact, the peatlands at Zoige Wetlands face severe degradation, and the groundwater table is now lower than before, which has increased the population of the plateau zokor, a burrowing rodent. However, the impact of these changes on ecosystem carbon flows has not been studied. To investigate how the plateau zokor and the groundwater level alter the ecosystem respiration of the Zoige peatlands, we sampled the CO2 flux of hummocks shaped by the zokors and compared it with the CO2 flux of undisturbed sites with different groundwater table levels. The soil organic carbon (SOC), soil water content (SWC) and soil temperature at 5 cm (T5) were measured. SOC showed no significant difference among the four sampling sites and did not correlate with the CO2 flux, while SWC was found to partly determine the CO2 flux. A linear equation could adequately describe the relationship between the natural logarithm of the ecosystem respiration and the soil temperature. It is demonstrated that descending groundwater table might accelerate ecosystem respiration and the CO2 flux from hummocks was higher than the CO2 flux from the control site in the non-growing season. With rising temperature, the CO2 flux from the control site accelerated faster than that from the hummocks. Our results show that ecosystem respiration was significantly lower from hummocks than at the control site in the growing season. The results on the impact of zokors on greenhouse gas emissions presented in this paper provide a useful reference to help properly manage not only this, but other litter-burrowing mammals at peatland sites. The mesoscale vortex (MV) is an important rain-producing system. In this study, the reanalysis data and satellite precipitation products are used to classify MVs into three categories: mesoscale convective vortex (MCV), mesoscale stratiform vortex (MSV), and mesoscale dry vortex (MDV). Then, these three categories of midlevel MVs in China from 2007 to 2016 are investigated. A total of 21 053 MVs are obtained. Most MVs form in the northwest of parent convection, and 45% of MVs generate secondary convection. The Tibetan Plateau is the main MV source region. Steered by the westerlies, MVs mainly move eastward. MCV is active in summer, MDV in winter, and MSV in spring and autumn. MCV diurnal variations are closely related to local topography, and MDVs mainly form around midnight. Composite analyses show that MCVs form near the high-value center of convective available potential energy at the development stage of parent convection. The composite MCV forms near the low pressure trough and the thermal ridge at 500 hPa, and a low-level jet exists to the south of the MCV center. At the initiation and maturity stages of MCV, strong convergence and divergence respectively exist at low levels and 400 hPa. The vortex circulation mainly locates near 500 hPa. Above the vortex is a warm core associated with the latent heat release, and below is a cold anomaly related to the cold pool. In the downshear region, there is strong low-level convergence and ascending motion, higher humidity, and greater latent heat release, which favor the formation of secondary convection. Background: The epidemiological features of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) were different in different areas; a comparison of the disease was needed to identify the variation and prognosis. We compare the epidemiological features of GBS in different areas in China. Method: A total of 1,191 patients were included. Information was collected in patients diagnosed with GBS and its variants in middle and south China, and then retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into four different regions: East China (n = 441), Center China (n = 566), South China (n = 77), and Southwest China (n = 107). These subregions are mainly divided by climate and geographical location. These data were compared with data from a study in East China (Shandong, n = 150) and Northeast China (Changchun, n = 750). Results: Patients from the south and southwest China were younger than other regions (P = 0.000). A summer peak and an autumn peak were found in northern China, but more patients in winter and spring days in other areas (P = 0.000). Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) was the preceding event of GBS patients in all regions but rarer in central China (P = 0.001). The proportion of axonal subtype was higher in central and southwest China than in other regions (P = 0.001). Patients in southwest China were more served at nadir and have the longest hospital stay (P = 0.003 and P = 0.000).
