Abstract

Yarn-based strain sensor is an emerging candidate for the fabrication of wearable electronic devices. The intrinsic properties of yarn, such as excellent lightweight, flexibility, stitchability, and especially its highly stretchable performance, stand out the yarn-based strain sensor from conventional rigid sensors in detection of human body motions. Recent advances in conductive materials and fabrication methods of yarn-based strain sensors are well reviewed and discussed in this work. Coating techniques including dip-coating, layer by layer assemble, and chemical deposition for deposition of conductive layer on elastic filament were first introduced, and fabrication technology to incorporate conductive components into elastic matrix via melt extrusion or wet spinning was reviewed afterwards. Especially, the recent advances of core–sheath/wrapping yarn strain sensor as-fabricated by traditional spinning technique were well summarized. Finally, promising perspectives and challenges together with key points in the development of yarn strain sensors were presented for future endeavor.

38. Durable UV-protective cotton fabric by deposition of multilayer TiO2nanoparticles films on the surface

Abstract

Durable ultraviolet (UV)-protective cotton fabric has great application potential in outdoor cotton clothing. In this study, oppositely charged TiO2nanoparticles were deposited onto cotton fabric through the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, resulting in multilayer films with UV-protective properties. The mechanism of the technology has been investigated through characterization of the structure and properties using different techniques including FTIR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and a scanning electron microscope with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum. The results showed that TiO2nanoparticles distributed uniformly on the surface of cotton fibers. The TGA results indicated that the TiO2nanoparticles deposit on cotton fabrics had little effect on the thermal stability of cotton fabrics. The tensile strength and air permeability of the cotton samples were tested by a universal material testing machine and automatic ventilation instrument. The UV protection property of cotton fabric after assembled multilayer films was measured by an ultraviolet transmittance analyzer, and the laundering experiments were carried out to determine the durability of TiO2nanoparticles on cotton fabric. The results showed that the UV protection property of cotton fabrics after assembled TiO2nanoparticles was still maintained at a high level after five launderings.
