Grassland is the largest ecosystem on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and provides multiple ecosystem functions and services. Understanding the endowment of the QTP grassland and how to revitalize it have profound implications for the sustainable use and efficient conservation of these unique and globally valuable ecosystems. In this paper, we highlight the importance of the QTP grassland in regional and global settings, stress the values of the QTP grassland in ecological and socioeconomic dimensions, and emphasize the actions needed to restore degraded grassland in the QTP region. The QTP is the largest single area of alpine grassland in the world and an important gene pool of alpine biological resources. The QTP grassland covers two critical ecoregions for conserving the best and most representative habitats for alpine biodiversity on the planet. The QTP grassland is also regarded as one of the best carriers and objects of socio‐ecological systems in the world. To promote the resilience and sustainability of the QTP grassland through adaptation, different parties need to work together to find feasible options to resist shock, stresses, and disturbance and to maintain the fundamental functions and basic structures of the QTP grassland. Background: N (nitrogen) and P (phosphorus) play important roles in plant growth and fitness, and both are the most important limiting factors that affect grassland structure and function. However, we still know little about plant physiological responses to N and P enrichment in alpine grassland of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. In our experiment, five dominant common herbaceous species were selected and their photosynthetic parameters, leaf N content, and aboveground biomass were measured. Results: We found that species-specific responses to N and P enrichment were obvious at individual level. N addition (72 kg Nha−1 yr−1), P addition (36 kg Pha−1 yr−1) and NP addition (72 kg Nha−1 yr−1and 36 kg P ha−1 yr−1, simultaneously) significantly promoted net photosynthetic rate of Leymus secalinus. Differential responses also existed in the same functional groups. Responses of forb species to the nutrients addition varied, Aconitum carmichaeli was more sensitive to nutrients addition including N addition (72 kg Nha−1 yr−1), P addition (36 kg Pha−1 yr−1) and NP addition (72 kg Nha−1 yr−1and 36 kg P ha−1 yr−1). Responses of plant community photosynthetic traits were not so sensitive as those of plant individuals under N and P enrichment. Conclusions: Our findings highlighted that photosynthetic responses of alpine plants to N and P enrichment were species-specific. Grass species Leymus secalinus had a higher competitive advantage compared with other species under nutrient enrichment. Additionally, soil pH variation and nutrients imbalance induced by N and P enrichment is the main cause that affect photosynthetic traits of plant in alpine steppe of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Global grassland degradation has prompted professionals and practitioners to critically consider about the future of grassland resources. Restoration actions related to payment for ecosystem services (PES) have been proposed as a possible approach to balancing grassland sustainable development and ecosystem service supply. Since 2005, approximately one billion U.S. dollars have been invested in the Three-River Headwater Region (TRHR) of China to restore 5.69 × 106 ha of degraded grasslands via grassland cultivation and fencing. Unfortunately, few literature has drawn valid and generalizable conclusions regarding the economic performance of these PES programs. Therefore, field data from multiple sites were collected to evaluate the economic returns of restoration actions, returns on investments (ROI), and trade-offs among ecosystem services of cultivated and fenced grasslands over different restoration years in the TRHR. The results revealed that PES-related restoration efforts in the TRHR had yielded a net profit of $14.34 billion, with $13.20 billion from the alpine meadow, $0.74 billion from the alpine steppe and $0.40 billion from the temperate steppe. These substantial economic can be attributed to the combined effects of the surge in specific ecosystem services and the synergistic improvement of all ecosystem services. The ROI of supporting service accounted for the largest proportion of ROI in total ecosystem services and exhibited drastic fluctuations with restoration years, whereas the ROI of other services either increased gradually or remained stable across different restoration periods. The trade-offs in ecosystem services varied greatly with grassland type. We observed an increasing synchronization of ecosystem services over time in the fenced alpine steppe, cultivated alpine meadow, and cultivated temperate steppe; whereas a similar trend was not detected in other grasslands. • Endangered plants in Sanjiangyuan mainly locate in the east and the south. • Distribution of endangered plants will expand to the west and north in the future. • Habitats in the northeast are at the highest ecosystem risk. • Most of the highest risk areas are not strictly protected. Sanjiangyuan, called the "Water tower of Asia", is critically important in the ecological services of water provision and regulation and in biodiversity conservation. To strengthen protection in this eco-region, The Chinese government established the Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve (SNNR) in 2001 and Sanjiangyuan National Park (SNP) in 2014. To assess the effectiveness of these two conservation practices, on the endangered plant species, we used an integrated method to identify the priority areas of the endangered plant species in the Sanjiangyuan Area which showed if some areas need more conservation efforts. After identifying the potential habitats of high-valued species in Sanjiangyuan with MaxENT, a model that combined the hotspots of endangered plant species richness (H), vegetation condition (V), soil condition (S), human disturbance (D) and climate change impact (C) was used to calculate ecosystem risk (ER) associated with each habitat. Projections of climate modeling show that the distribution of endangered plants in Sangjiangyuan will expand to the west and north with the warmer and wetter climate in the future. In both current and future scenarios, the habitats in the northeast of the SNNR are at the highest ecosystem risk and need to be protected strictly. However, most of the high ecosystem risk/conservation priority regions we identified - either current or predicted future status (in 2070 under RCP 2.6) were not protected by SNNR or SNP. Identified conservation gaps call for the well-targeted planning and delineated scientific interventions for protecting the key habitats of these endangered plant species. Conservation priority should be given to eastern Xinghai County and northeastern Tongde County in the east of SNNR, where the habitats are at high ecosystem risk and have high conservation priority. Abstract There is no consensus about the relationship between plant species diversity and productivity in grasslands. Lack of consensus might be caused by different diversity metrics used and different spatial scales examined. In particular, the impacts of different biodiversity indices on the plant diversity–plant productivity relationship of alpine grasslands at different spatial scales of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) require investigation. We investigated the relations of multi-dimensional diversity indices (species richness, Shannon–Wiener diversity, and Pielou evenness) with aboveground and belowground plant biomass in the alpine grasslands of the QTP by linear mixed model (LMM). We assessed the plant diversity and biomass of alpine meadow, alpine steppe, and alpine desert steppe from 5 sites across the vast landscape of the QTP by using 6 randomly placed plots in each site and 27 replicated quadrats in each plot. The species richness of the studied alpine grasslands ranged from 2 to 35, aboveground plant dry biomass ranged from 17 to 838 g m−2, and belowground plant dry biomass ranged from 398 to 3945 g m−2. The species richness and Shannon–Wiener indices were positively correlated with aboveground plant biomass and belowground plant biomass at the landscape scale, whereas the Pielou evenness index was negatively correlated with aboveground plant biomass and belowground plant biomass at the landscape scale. Less than 20% sites showed significant relationships between plant diversity indices and plant biomass at site scale. Plant biomass partitioning between the root and shoot was not correlated with the species richness, Shannon–Wiener and Pielou evenness indices at all scales. The plant diversity–biomass relationships of the alpine grassland ecosystems in the QTP depend on both the type (or dimension) of the biodiversity index and the spatial scale of sampling. Thus, the design and implementation of plant diversity conservation should consider different dimensions of plant diversity. It is not enough to increase species richness only in the process of grassland restoration and conservation, but also to reduce species evenness so as to promote productivity more fully, for example, in planting artificial grassland. The plateau pika ( Ochotona curzoniae ) is considered a keystone species on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP). Under a moderate burrow density condition, we investigated plant community and soil properties surrounding pika's burrows in comparison to the control sites (without pika's burrows) in an alpine meadow ecosystem. The results demonstrated that plant biomass, especially aboveground biomass around pika's burrow, was improved. The contents of available soil nutrients around the pika's burrow were improved as well. The highest aboveground biomass and highest contents of NH 4 -N, available phosphorus and available potassium was detected at the back of the burrow. The compositions of plant community were not changed significantly around the pika burrow, excluding at the front of the burrow. Our findings revealed that the activities of plateau pika can improve the production of alpine meadow and increase the soil fertility at individual burrow level when the burrow density was not out of control. Ecological conservation and restoration projects in Three-river Headwater Region (TRHR) have been implemented to respond to the serious degradation of alpine meadow ecosystem. Compared with the substantial amount of studies on the recovery of plant communities, soil quality and ecosystem services, few studies have focused on the restoration performance of target species. Therefore, we conducted this study to analyze the dynamics and underlying mechanisms of species richness and aboveground biomass of plant communities and target species. The results showed that restoration actions (grassland cultivation and fencing) did not significantly improve the community aboveground biomass of the degraded alpine meadows, while the actions did significantly promote community species richness, target species richness and target species aboveground biomass. Community species richness (20%-45%) was significantly impacted by the restoration strategies, and community aboveground biomass (31%-53%) was impacted by the mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature. The species richness (57%) and aboveground biomass (63%) of the target species were directly and indirectly impacted by restoration actions, climatic factors, biotic factors and soil factors. The implications of this study stress that target species should be highlighted in assessing the restoration success of degraded alpine meadows. Integrating climatic factors, target species and other biotic and abiotic indicators could help us better understand and evaluate restoration actions for degraded alpine meadows in the TRHR or other similar regions worldwide. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is experiencing increasing nitrogen (N) deposition, which may have great impacts on the physical, chemical, and biological factors that determine the stabilization of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, few studies have been conducted to quantify the relative contributions of these factors to SOC stabilization at various N addition levels in alpine habitats. We established a N manipulation experiment from 2015 to 2016 in an alpine meadow on the QTP to examine the impacts of N addition gradients on SOC stabilization under different scenarios of N deposition including 8, 24, 40, 56, and 72 kg N ha−1 yr−1. Using solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy, we assessed the changes in the chemical composition of SOC. We measured soil aggregate size fractions, iron ions, soil microbes, and soil chemicals to investigate their contributions to SOC stabilization. We found that there were response thresholds of SOC to N addition in this alpine meadow on the QTP. The critical level of N addition for the change of SOC was close to 16 kg N ha−1 yr−1 plus the natural atmospheric N deposition (approximately 8 kg N ha−1 yr−1). N addition affected SOC stabilization in this alpine meadow mainly by affecting soil aggregates and soil microbes. These results of this study suggest that an exogenous N input lower than the critical load is beneficial for C sequestration in this alpine meadow on the QTP. Alpine grasslands are sensitive to grazing and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. Despite increases in N deposition, few field studies have assessed the effects of grazing in conjunction with increased N deposition on alpine grassland vegetation. In this two-year field study, we examined the effects of overgrazing and overgrazing plus N deposition on eco-physiological processes of alpine grassland plants at the functional group level. We found that both overgrazing and overgrazing plus N deposition altered species composition and the dominance of three plant functional groups (grasses, sedges, and forbs) in an alpine meadow and alpine steppe. In the overgrazing and overgrazing plus N deposition treatments, forbs dominated the plant community. Grass and sedge dominance decreased substantially, relative to a ungrazed treatment. The underlying eco-physiological processes that led to the forb-dominated plant community differed between the overgrazing and overgrazing plus N deposition treatments. Overgrazing plus N deposition increased forb dominance both directly by selective herbivory and indirectly by enhancing forb photosynthetic rates. Our results suggest that overgrazing concomitant with increases in N deposition will likely shift the plant community composition of alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau from grass/sedge communities to forb-dominated communities in the future. Maintaining the aboveground biomass (AGB) and canopy cover (CC) of grassland is key for sustainable grassland management and rational conservation planning, especially for fragile regions of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). However, the estimation of AGB and CC with land use changes is often challenging due to poor availability of high-quality images of remote sensing or the large-scale field survey data. In this study, we used the transect survey method combining with quadrat measurements with 1200 plant samplings and near surface hyperspectral measurements at 180 sites to validate the MODIS data. An integrative approach combining the plant sampling, near surface hyperspectral measurements, remote sensing data interpretation, random forest modelling and Hurst phenomenon prediction was developed to accurately and efficiently estimate the CC and AGB of the alpine grasslands on the QTP from 2000 to 2017 and their future trends. The results showed: 1) estimation of AGB and CC in different land use types by integrating random forest with multiple factors (NDVI, latitude, longitude and altitude, grassland types) was more accurate; 2) the inter-annual changes of AGB and CC of the alpine grasslands presented significant fluctuations, with an increasing trend in the QTP; 3) the areas with improved vegetation conditions of AGB (66.55%) and CC (64.58%) were much larger than those with degraded vegetation conditions of AGB (33.45%) and CC (35.42%) in past 20 years. 4) there are 60.66% of the AGB and 59.87% of coverage showing sustainability and increasing in the future. Estimating the AGB and CC with multiple factors using the random forest and validated MODIS with the field spectrometer can improve the accuracy. The findings of this study can provide scientific basis for promoting the sustainability of grassland ecosystem through adaptive and rational management on the QTP and worldwide. China has recently implemented the latest rural land tenure reform with the "Separating Three Property Rights" as non-tradable land ownership, non-tradable land contracting right and tradable land use right, leading to a dramatic change in grassland management strategies in vast pastoral areas. However, the impact of this new reform on grassland management practices is widely debated by scholars and policy analysts. To identify the factors impacting the pastoralists' choice of grassland management practice and the social, economic and ecological benefits derived from different grassland management practices, we conducted a field survey of pastoralists (n = 259) in 7 counties on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that respondents' gender, grassland area, scale and location of the village, grassland condition perception significantly exerted positive influence on pastoralists' willingness to participate in cooperative grassland management practices, while grassland fence and urban life expectation negatively influenced the willingness. We found that cooperative grassland management practices led to significantly higher household incomes, more equal gender relationships and better-managed grasslands than individual ones. In spite of this, there were still a large number of pastoralists who chose individual grassland management practices due to their long-term customary operations. Nitrogen (N) deposition and warming leads to environmental gradients that shape plant communities and ecological diversity, space is treated as an equally important variable as the environmental variables in the environmental gradients. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) is very sensitive to large increases in N deposition rates and warming. Environmental gradients caused by N deposition and spatial factors act as environmental filtering in community assembly by affecting plant functional traits and phylogeny. To investigate the effects of environmental filtering caused by N deposition on the community assembly in alpine meadows, we randomly placed and fertilized at 6 levels of N addition (no N addition, 8 kg N ha-1year−1, 24 kg N ha−1 year−1, 40 kg N ha−1 year−1, 56 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 72 kg N ha−1 year−1) both in a normal (normal precipitation and normal temperature) year and a warm (normal precipitation and warm) year. We used the fourth-corner analysis and extended RLQ (R stands for a matrix of environmental variables by samples, L stands for a species-cover-by-samples matrix and Q stands for a species-by-traits matrix) through multiple factors (soil factors, spatial heterogeneity, species traits, phylogenetic factor) to examine the effects of environmental filtering on the community assembly in alpine meadows. The results demonstrated that all soil variables showed a clear gradient and were affected by simulated N deposition; N addition at 8 kg N ha-1year−1 can filtrate the species of the gramineae, but N addition at 72 kg N ha−1 year−1 can filtrate the species of non-gramineae, the main factors of environmental filtering were potassium in normal year and phosphorus in warm year. With the increase of N deposition rate in alpine meadow of QTP, non-gramineous plants will be favored first, but eventually gramineous plants will occupy the dominant position in the QTP. Rational mitigation strategies should be developed for different climate change scenarios of alpine grasslands on the QTP according to their responses to the N addition gradients and climate change scenarios in the future. How climate change and human activities drive the evolution of the regional environment and where the quality of ecosystems improve or decline over time have become widespread concerns. In this study, we took the Three-River-Source (TRS) region of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau as a case, aiming to identify and quantify the contribution of the natural and anthropogenic factors to the ecosystem changes over the past years from 1980 to 2018 using the methods of remote sensing and spatial statistical analysis. Based on the land cover map interpreted by reference to satellite remote sensing imagery data, we defined the Ecological Restoration Area Proportion (ERAP) as the bare land patch decrement to indicate the ecologically restored quantity in space. Assembling the restoration project information, we digitalized and vectorized the ecological Restoration Intensity (RI) including the spatial range and temporal duration. Combining the ERAP and the net primary productivity (NPP), which indicates the quantity and quality of ecosystems, respectively, the ecological asset Index (EAI) was developed and calculated. Having integrated the datasets of the vegetation monitoring, climatic factors, geographical factors, and human activities, we performed multi-variable analysis of the attribution of how the change in the EAI, the NPP, and the EAI have been affected by these factors together. The NPP of the middle and eastern parts of the TRS region has improved the most, as the average growth rate of NPP reached approximately 2.5 kg C/m2/10a. Due to such dynamic pattern, we found that human-induced re-vegetation has made limited contributions in our multi-regression model as the variance explained by the RI merely amounts to 4.4% to 8.8%, while the changes were mostly dependent on the regional temperature and the precipitation which contributed over 45% to the ecological restoration on average. It was summarized that "climate-help" overwhelms "human act" in such alpine grassland ecosystem. The regression results for the different aspects of the ERAP and NPP demonstrated that the ecological restoration project helped most in regard to ecosystem quality improvement rather than the restored ecosystem quantity. Our study has developed a comprehensive assessment methodology that can be reused to account for more ecological asset. The case is an example of an alpine ecosystem in which the success of ecological restoration needs favorable climatic conditions as supporting evidence for the nature-based solution. Background-oriented Schlieren tomography (BOST) is widely used for 3D reconstruction of turbulent flames. Two major concerns are associated with 3D reconstruction. One is the time asynchrony within the data acquisition of the high-speed camera. The other is that the ray tracing process requires significant computational consumption. This study proposes a ray tracing optimization method based on the k-d tree. The study results show that the average search nodes for each ray are only 0.018% of 3D flame with 3.07 million grid nodes. In addition, a parameter estimation method of the unknown azimuth power spectrum function is proposed. First, a typical Sandia turbulent jet diffusion flame dataset was built and validated accordingly, with experiments. The algorithm's applicability to the 3D reconstruction of temperature and density fields is discussed on this basis. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the cross-section density for 3D reconstruction is below 0.1 kg/m3. In addition, the RMSE of the cross-section temperature is below 270 K. Finally, an uncertainty analysis of the flame reconstruction based on a physical model is performed by optimizing the ray tracing method. For the time asynchronous variance of 1 ms, the density uncertainty of the 3D reconstruction is below 1.6 × 10−2 kg/m3, and the temperature uncertainty is below 70 K. To understand effects of soil microbes on soil biochemistry in alpine grassland ecosystems under environmental changes, we explored relationships between soil microbial diversity and soil total nitrogen, organic carbon, available nitrogen and phosphorus, soil microbial biomass and soil enzyme activities in alpine meadow, alpine steppe and cultivated grassland on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau under three-year warming, enhanced precipitation and yak overgrazing. Soil total nitrogen, organic carbon and NH4-N were little affected by overgrazing, warming or enhanced precipitation in three types of alpine grasslands. Soil microbial biomass carbon and phosphorus along with the sucrase and phosphatase activities were generally stable under different treatments. Soil NO3-N, available phosphorus, urease activity and microbial biomass nitrogen were increased by overgrazing in the cultivated grassland. Soil bacterial diversity was positively correlated with, while soil fungal diversity negatively with soil microbial biomass and enzyme activities. Soil bacterial diversity was negatively correlated with, while soil fungal diversity positively with soil available nutrients. Our findings indicated soil bacteria and fungi played different roles in affecting soil nutrients and microbiological activities that might provide an important implication to understand why soil biochemistry was generally stable under environmental changes in alpine grassland ecosystems. Abstract In this paper, a fast estimating method of thermal infrared radiation signatures for low-altitude exhaust plumes was proposed. In engineering application, it is essential to predict the thermal radiation effect of the plume as soon as possible. A simple numerical model was established considering thermal, species formation, entrainment and radiating effects. In this methodology, the mixing region was treated as a hot, under-expanded, reacting and isotonic flow. The reacting flows were simulated by solving the governing equations with finite rate kinetics and conservation matching relations. A single-line-group (SLG) model with Curtis-Godson approximation was utilized to evaluate radiative properties of radiating species. A line-of-sight (LOS) method was used to compute the spectral radiation intensity. This computational model was verified against the Atlas-II's reference data within the wavelengths of 2–6 μm. The simulation analyzed combustion flows and infrared thermal effects of a typical exhaust plume along flight trajectory points. Results show that the current model can dramatically improve the computational efficiency by 100–1000 times by comparing with the commonly used method. According to this model, the plume's range and an appropriable cutoff temperature for thermal radiation calculations are easy to obtain. Infrared radiation phenomena accord with the experimental observations. Abstract Radiative heat transfer plays an important role in combustion systems. Good compromise between the accuracy and computational requirements of the weighted sum of gray gases (WSGG) model makes it widely used in CFD simulations. In this paper, the accuracy of various WSGG models is assessed by the comparison with the results of radiative heat source and heat flux calculated by line by line (LBL) approach in a realistic non-isothermal and non-homogeneous flame using decoupled calculations. Then these models are implemented to CFD code to investigate the radiative heat transfer for a 600 kW furnace using coupled calculations. The experimental data from the furnace has been used to evaluate the computational applicability and reliability of WSGG models. Results show that the non-gray formulation of WSGG model is more accurate than gray modelling approach, compared with LBL results. The non-gray WSGG models of Krishnamoorthy et al. (2013), Bordbar et al. (2014) and Shan et al. (2018) provide the minimal overall errors compared with the measured temperature fields. The results demonstrate that using the non-gray approach instead of gray approach for global CFD simulation improves the simulation accuracy of thermal radiation transfer. The livestock depredation by large carnivores is a main cause for increasing human–wildlife conflicts (HWCs) and is one of the prime challenges for carnivore's conservation and a major economic concern to livestock‐dependent communities around wildlife habitats. Thus, understanding the patterns and trends of livestock depredation may contribute to better understanding of the mechanisms underlying HWCs and to mitigating HWCs. HWCs characterized by livestock depredation by large carnivores are prevalent in northern Pakistan, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly investigated. This study was conducted in 2018 in the Khunjerab Valley and Shimshal Valley of the Pamir region to evaluate the spatial and seasonal variation and impact of livestock depredation by carnivores. Data were collected on livestock depredation and its associated economic impact through semi‐structured interviews of randomly selected households in the two valleys. The livestock in Shimshal Valley was more susceptible to large carnivores' depredation (233 heads per year) than in Khunjerab Valley (125 heads per year). This spatial variation in livestock depredation was reflective of the difference in the socio‐economic conditions and physical locations between the two valleys. More livestock depredation took place in winter in Khunjerab Valley, while more livestock depredation occurred in summer in Shimshal Valley, mainly because of different grazing systems in the two valleys. The total economic loss incurred due to large carnivores' depredation was US$ 76,063 in Shimshal Valley, as compared to US$ 34,175 in Khunjerab Valley in 2018. The average economic loss per household was US$ 950.8, accounting for nearly 30% of the household annual income in Shimshal Valley in 2018. A higher proportion of participants in Shimshal Valley (83%) in comparison to Khunjerab Valley (69%) expressed a negative attitude towards wild carnivores. The study concludes that Shimshal Valley, remotely located and having comparatively marginal income opportunities, was more reliant on agro‐pastoralism and thus more vulnerable to the economic repercussions of livestock depredation by wild carnivores. Construction and operation of cascading dams can pose drastic effects on sediment transport and deposition, thus affecting sedimentary carbon concentrations in the riverine ecosystem. This paper examines the spatial variations of sedimentary organic carbon (OC sed ) and its potential relationship with terrestrial soil loss in two cascade reservoirs (Manwan and Dachaoshan) along the mainstream of Lancang River. During both wet and dry seasons in 2013 and 2014, 25 sampling sections were chosen to evaluate the spatial variations of sedimentary organic carbon. Generally, the contents of OC sed in the upper 5 cm of the bottom sediment in wet seasons were higher than those in dry seasons in both reservoirs. Spatially, lower reservoir (Dachaoshan) preserved higher OC sed content than the upper reservoir (Manwan), at 36.1 kg m −2 and 27.8 kg m −2 , respectively. Additionally, the contents of OC sed in the reservoir heads were higher than those in the reservoir centres and tails, this trend was also observed for terrestrial organic carbon (OC ter ) and liable organic carbon (LOC). Hillslope delivery ratio (HSDR) method are used to estimate the incoming sediment yields from the river basin. The results indicated that Dachaoshan catchment generated higher sediment stream deposits than the Manwan catchment with the high sediment loading (>40 t/ha/year) areas located within 3 km buffers encompassing a higher accumulation of farmlands. The cumulative effects of sediment transport on OC sed along the river channel were further investigated by setting sequential riverine sediment delivery ratios (0–0.55) to explore potential relationships between OC sed and total sediment delivered to stream. The results showed that in the Dachaoshan Reservoir the OC sed contents correlated with the total sediment delivered to streams when the ratios ranged from 0.10 to 0.55, in particular in delivery ratios ranging from 0.50 to 0.55. These findings emphasized the importance of direct and indirect connections between the terrestrial and riverine ecosystems, and also provided a preferable view to understand the cumulative effects of sediment transport on OC sed distributions in the reservoirs generated by cascading dams. The stability of grassland is pivotal in maintaining the grassland functioning and services. However, the knowledge about the consequences of grazing on stability of grassland productivity is limited. Based on a 3-year manipulated experiment with two grazing regimes (i.e., continuous grazing and rotational grazing) along four levels of grazing-intensity (0, 4, 6, and 8 sheep per hectare) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, we researched the responses of temporal stability of plant community and functional groups of alpine grasslands to different grazing management regimes. We found that grazing regimes, intensity and their interaction affected the temporal stability of aboveground net primary productivity of alpine grassland (ANPP), and intermediate rotational grazing significantly reduced the temporal stability of ANPP, whereas increased the stability of productivity of functional group of forbs. The response species to continuous grazing and rotational grazing are different, for grasses and forbs respectively. Rotational grazing and intermediate continuous grazing increased the diversity of response species. Structural equation modeling further revealed that functional groups asynchrony stabilized the productivity of the alpine grassland ecosystem under grazing in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. These results showed that the rotational grazing and intermediate continuous grazing can maintain the productivity stability, and highlighted importance of regulating the relationships among functional groups for promoting the stability of alpine grassland under grazing management. A hypersonic electromagnetic railgun projectile undergoes severe aero-heating with an increase in altitude. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the shock layer flow field as well as the thermal environment of the blunt body wall of a hypersonic electromagnetic railgun projectile at different launching angles. The two-temperature model considers the thermal nonequilibrium effect and is introduced into the Navier–Stokes (N-S) equation, and it is solved using the finite volume method (FVM). The reliability of the calculation model in terms of thermal properties and composition production was verified against a blunted-cone-cylinder–flare (HB-2) test case. The surface temperature of the hypersonic blunt projectile was simulated using a radiation balance wall boundary. The thermal characteristics at the emission angles α = 60° and α = 45° were checked within an altitude range of 0–70 km, including the nonequilibrium effect, reaction heat release, aerodynamic heat flux, and wall temperature. The results show that the translational rotational temperature is higher than the vibrational electronic temperature, and the thermal nonequilibrium effect increases with an increase in altitude. Comparing the two launching angles, the nonequilibrium degree and reaction heat release at α = 60° were higher than those at α = 45°. The rates of exothermic reaction decreased with an increase in altitude. The heat flux along the wall of the generatrix decreased sharply from the stagnation point. With an increase in altitude, the heat flux dropped sharply from 7 MW/m2 at H = 0 km to approximately 2 MW/m2 at H = 70 km. The wall temperature distribution was similar to the heat flux distribution; however, the surface temperature decreased less rapidly than the heat flux. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• It was found that the agricultural land expanded significantly, desert reduced from 1993 to 2019 in the oasis region in Hotan River Basin, China. • The key indicators of the coupling system of vegetation–climate, soil-adjusted vegetation index, albedo, surface temperature, and evapotranspiration were calculated and mapped their spatial-temporal dynamics. • We investigated how the different landscape patterns altered the interaction between vegetation and climate in the desert oasis ecosystem and quantified the effects with structural equation model. In the arid region, the oasis is characterized by a desert substance and a mosaic of vegetation. The biophysical processes and interactions between vegetation and the local climate in this kind of region are determined by the macroscopic structure of the ecosystems, i.e. landscape patterns. To understand how these landscape patterns impact regional hydro-heat coupling across space and evolve over time, we utilized remote sensing observational data and methods to examine the relationships among these factors. In this case, we focused on the oasis along the upstream of the Hotan River Basin in the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang of western China and employed the satellite imagery datasets of Landsat from 1993 to 2019 to investigate the dynamics of vegetation–climate factors. Based on the land use and cover change datasets, the landscape pattern metrics, including patch density (PD), contagion index (CONTAG), fractal dimension (FRAC), were calculated to measure the landscape features on the different aspects, i.e. the fragmentation, the connectivity, and the complexity. With the algorithm of land surface energy balance, the land surface indicators, including the soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAV I), albedo, surface irradiance temperature (T s), and evapotranspiration (ET), were calculated to represent the key process in the interaction of vegetation–climate. The temporal-spatial dynamics of the landscape patterns and the vegetation–climate metrics were mapped and demonstrated in a quantitative manner. The statistical results revealed that during the past decades, the agricultural land in the study area had significantly increased by 17 %. Grassland and shrubs had also expanded, while the desert area decreased from 82.57 % to 78.82 % of the total area, with an overall reduction rate of 1.4 %/10a. It was found the study area was getting warmer and dryer based on the general trends of T s and ET observed during the period of 1993–2019. The agricultural land had the highest PD and CONTAG , and the lowest FRAC. The agricultural land had the lowest T s and the highest ET. The results of structural equation model identified the decoupling effects of PD and CONTAG on the regional hydro-heat environment, while confirmed that FRAC had positive impact on the coupling between T s and ET. Our study bridged the landscape pattern with the regional vegetation–climate interaction and provided the suggestions for the landscape planning and management for a more sustainable arid region. The structure and function of aquatic communities in reservoir ecosystems can be strongly affected by dam construction. The Ecopath model is an effective tool that reveals the food web structure and pathways of energy flows. In this study, it was applied to analyze the trophic interactions and energy flows within the Manwan reservoir ecosystem on Lancang River in southwest China. Ecotrophic efficiency (EE) was calculated and the value ofEEwas 0.073 for the least-exploited piscivorous fishes (top predators) and 0.93 for the most-exploited zoobenthos. Four estimated trophic levels of the groups varied from 1 for detritus and phytoplankton (level I) to 3.69 for piscivorous fishes (level IV) and the remaining groups were mainly at trophic levels II and III. Food web structures and interactions were well represented by a linear food chain that was dominated by a detritus pathway; that is, energy flows from detritus were as important as phytoplankton in the web. The proportion of total energy flow originating from detritus was 46% while the other 54% came from primary producers. The average transfer efficiencies between trophic levels were 16.6% from primary producer and 15.7% from detritus. Total system throughput was found to be 5550 t km−2yr−1, total primary production/total respiration ratio was 2.46, and the ascendency index was 27.4%. These results showed that Manwan reservoir ecosystem was an immature ecosystem and still at its development stage. These results are helpful for biodiversity preservation and the understanding and monitoring of reservoir ecosystems which are key resources for fish and other aquatic organisms. Quantifying drought variations at multi-time scales is important to assess the potential impacts of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems, especially vulnerable desert grassland. Based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), we assessed the influences of different time-scales drought (SPEI-3, SPEI-6, SPEI-12, SPEI-24, and SPEI-48 with 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 months, respectively) on vegetation dynamics in the Qaidam River Basin, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Results showed that (1) temporally, annual and summer NDVI increased, while spring and autumn NDVI decreased from 1998 to 2015. Annual, spring, and summer SPEI increased, and autumn SPEI decreased. (2) Spatially, annual, spring, summer, and autumn NDVI increased in the periphery of the Basin, with 45.98%, 22.68%, 43.90%, and 30.80% of the study area, respectively. SPEI showed a reverse variation pattern with NDVI, with an obvious decreasing trend from southeast to northwest. (3) Annual vegetation growth in most areas (69.53%, 77.33%, 86.36%, 90.19%, and 85.44%) was correlated with drought at all time-scales during 1998–2015. However, high spatial and seasonal differences occurred among different time-scales, with the maximum influence in summer under SPEI24. (4) From month to annual scales, NDVI of all land cover types showed higher correlation to long-term drought of SPEI24 or SPEI48. Vegetation condition index (VCI) and SPEI were positively correlated at all time-scales and had a more obvious response in summer. The highest correlation was VCI of grassland (June–July) or forest (April–May, August–October) and SPEI48. This study contributes to exploring the effect of drought on vegetation dynamics at different time scales, further providing credible guidance for regional water resources management. The grassland soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) store a large amount of organic carbon because of the cold, humid climate, and topsoil organic carbon is quite sensitive to global climate changes. However, the spatio-temporal dynamics and factors that influence the soil organic carbon (SOC) on the QTP's grassland are not understood well. Moreover, there are few comparative analyses of different approaches to estimate the QTP' SOC. In this study, we estimated the storage and patterns of SOC density (SOCD) using several methods, including MODIS (moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer) retrieval, field data and previous empirical models (Models1-4, and soil organic matter (SOM)). And their relations with aboveground biomass, soil moisture, temperature, elevation, and soil conductivity were further explored. The results showed that SOC showed a similar variation trend in the different models, in which it decreased with increasing bulk density (BD) in the topsoil at 30 cm. For meadow and steppe grasslands, Models 1, 2, and 4 showed similar estimated values of SOCD, while Model3 had a lower value than them. SOC storage in the BD 3 and SOM methods had abnormal values, while the MODIS-NDVI, BD 1, 2, and 4 methods had similar SOC stock values for meadow and steppe grassland. Moreover, meadow grassland had a higher SOC storage than did steppe grassland, with means values of 397.9×1010 kg and 242.2×1010 kg, respectively. SOCD's spatial distribution using MODIS-NDVI method differed clearly from the empirical models, with a significant tendency for spatial variation that increased from the northwestern to southeastern regions on the QTP. Therefore, based on the values estimated and spatial variation features, the MODIS-NDVI method may be a more feasible and valid model to estimate SOC. Moreover, the mean annual SOCD values during 2000–2015 showed an increasing trend, with a higher mean value in meadow and a lower mean value in steppe. Further, SOCD was correlated significantly and positively with aboveground biomass and soil moisture, and negatively correlated with elevation and soil conductivity. Increasing temperature had negative effects on SOCD, which was consistent with the global trend. These results indicated that topsoil moisture plays a key role in SOCD spatial patterns. With the application of oxyfuel combustion technology, the status of radiative heat transfer in oxyfuel flames is prominent, and accurate description of it is essential. This study simulates the turbulence radiation interaction (TRI) in a swirling gas-fired furnace to understand the thermal radiation behavior under oxycombustion conditions. Employing the non-gray weighted sum of gray gases model calculates the radiative properties of the participating media and the TRI is modeled. The effects of TRI on the radiative heat transfer in the furnace under different oxycombustion conditions and swirl numbers are analyzed. The results show that the effects of thermal radiation on temperature fields are critical in the gas-fired furnace, especially for oxycombustion condition with high oxygen concentration, and the same is true for TRI effect. With the increase of O 2 concentration in O 2 /CO 2 oxidizer, the radiative heat flux on the chamber wall, the radiative heat flux contribution to total heat flux, and the net radiative heat loss are increased. Increasing swirl number can weaken the TRI effect. It is observed that with 35% O 2 in oxidizer, the radiation contribution to heat flux along the entire wall and local increase of radiative heat flux due to TRI effect are almost than 45% and 18%, respectively. Abstract Ecological security is important for social and economic sustainable development which needs stable resources and eco-environment support. In this study, we established an evaluation indicator system considering pressure and pressure-bearing to quantify the ecological security for Kunming city as it is a socioeconomic center in Southwest China with important ecological niche and rapid urbanization. According to the weights assigned by entropy method, we overlaid 13 indicators which were divided into 2 units, pressure indicators and pressure-bearing indicators, to evaluate the ecological security on grid scale. And then, ecological security level on district-county scale was evaluated based on the entropy matter-element model. On this basis, we explored their spatial distribution characteristics and the change trend from 2000 to 2015. Results showed that spatial distribution characteristic of ecological security evaluation was similar with the results of pressure evaluation, showing the scores and levels gradually increased from the urban area to the surrounding areas. Compared the ecological security levels in 2000 and in 2015, both of the highest value and the lowest value increased slightly. In general, the area with improved ecological security situation accounted for 89.10% of the total area. In terms of the change trend of ecological security levels, eight counties deteriorated while five counties remained unchanged which were driven by different deterioration reasons. Abstract Open-pit mining activities cause great damage to the local ecosystems. It is therefore necessary to assess and recover the vegetation status to maintain ecological stability. In this study, the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) was used to assess the vegetation habitat and the structural equation model (SEM) was applied to quantify the influences of different environmental factors on FQI in the Kunyang open-pit phosphate rock mine in Yunnan Province, China. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analyses revealed that great differences of vegetation community composition existed in the sampled plots, even those at similar distances to mining areas, which indicates that disturbing distance was not the only factor to determine the vegetation community. SEM results showed that Cu promoted the FQI most obviously (0.84), followed by Co (0.75), while the inhibition of Cd content in soil to the FQI was the most significant (−0.88), followed by TK (−0.82), and C (−0.79). Soil fertility quality and soil pollution indexes were also established to analyze the effects of comprehensive soil parameters on FQI. The results showed that the soil fertility quality index had a strong negative effect on FQI, which revealed that higher levels of TP, TN, TK, and other nutrients in the soil would produce 'toxicity' to the growth of vegetation. Integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) has been viewed as an appropriate approach to identifying conservation priorities. Taking Xishuangbanna tropical region in Southwest China, different BESs (habitat quality [used as a proxy for biodiversity], carbon storage, and water yield) were quantified using the InVEST model and conservation hotspots from 1976, 1990, and 2010 were identified by overlapping and ranking the service layers. Results showed that BESs areas were unevenly distributed. High habitat quality and carbon storage areas located in the eastern part of the region were mainly occupied by broad-leaved forest, while high water yield areas were covered by grassland and tropical forests. Recognized hotspots were primarily composed of the broad-leaved forest and shrub grassland. However, these habitat types declined by nearly 50% from 1.25×105 ha to 0.63×105 ha and became more fragmented during the study period. We also found that the sub-watersheds which decreased in BES had fewer hotspots distributed and suffered greater landscape fragmentation. Our study further explored the impacts of land-use conversion on BES, and illustrated the necessity and feasibility of BESs in identifying potential conservation areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid plantation expansion and its associated impacts on habitat fragmentation and landscape connectivity in many tropical areas has raised increasing concerns as to its impact on Ecosystem Services (ES). Using the InVEST modelling suite, we evaluated critical ES dynamics in four zones of varying plantation expansion intensity (high, medium, low and no plantation expansion) in Xishuangbanna prefecture in Southwest China from 1976 to 2012. Based on these results, we also exmained the relationship between ES and landscape pattern and connectivity derived by the “probability of connectivity” model. We found that during the study period, plantation area increased more than 20 times in Xishuangbanna prefecture as a whole, while broad-leaved forest cover decreased by nearly 30%. The impact of plantation on ES was substantial at both the regional and local scale. Carbon stocks and water yield services decreased by 15.48% and 10.85%, respectively, from 1976 to 2012 throughout the region as a whole. Within the selected study zones, carbon stock and water yeild decreased by 45% and 32%, respectively, from the no plantation to the high plantation zones in 2012 specifically. Plantation expansion has also resulted in a decrease in natural forest cover and a high level of habitat fragmentation. Landscape connectivity decreased by a range of 54.64–95.58% throughout the study area, with 134.58 km 2 of forest patches of high importance reduced to medium or low importance during the study period. Correlation analysis showed that carbon storage was more closely correlated to landscape connectivity than forest habitat percentage, large patch index or cohesion index. Together, these results highlight that habitat configuration with a high connectivity level between fragmented patches is important for maintaining critical Ecosystem Services. Appropriate graft length within the joint and inside the osseous tunnel is essential for achieving posterior stability and adequate anchorage strength. Because of the curving path and thickness of the graft in double-bundle posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction, especially in double-bundle PCL augmentation (with remnant preservation), the actual intra-articular length of PCL grafts, which remains unknown, may be longer than previously published values. The main purpose of the current study is to measure the actual intra-articular graft length required in sandwich-style PCL reconstruction (remnant-preserving double-bundle PCL augmentation) and Zhao-style non-remnant-preserving double-bundle PCL reconstruction (semi-anatomic double-bundle PCL reconstruction using double-double tunnel with tibial medial and lateral arrangement). Nine matched pairs of intact cadaveric knees were randomized between two groups and respectively received sandwich-style PCL reconstruction (remnant-preserving group) and Zhao-style non-remnant-preserving double-bundle PCL reconstruction (non-remnant-preserving group). The tunnel positions were exactly the same in two groups. The anterolateral (AL) bundle was reconstructed with four-stranded semitendinosus tendon, and the posteromedial (PM) bundle was reconstructed with four-stranded gracilis tendon. For each bundle, the length of the graft portion within the joint was measured. The current study indicated that in remnant-preserving group, the average intra-articular exposed portion was 42.0 mm (SD, 1.3 mm; range, 40.0 mm to 43.4 mm) for the AL bundle and 32.5 mm (SD, 2.9 mm; range, 27.8 mm to 35.8 mm) for the PM bundle. In non-remnant-preserving group, the intra-articular exposed portion was 34.5 mm (SD, 1.0 mm; range, 32.7 mm to 36.0 mm) for the AL bundle and 29.1 mm (SD, 2.1 mm; range, 25.2 mm to 31.9 mm) for the PM bundle. For both the AL and PM bundles, significant differences were found in average intra-articular graft length between the two groups. The current study, whose methodology is more rigorous and accurate by measuring the actual intra-articular graft length, has direct applications to clinical practice. When considering the total graft lengths during reconstruction, it is necessary to recognize that remnant PCL has a space occupation effect on graft and that remnant preservation requires longer intra-articular graft lengths than non-remnant preservation. We detected the longitudinal variability of phosphorus speciations and its relation to metals and grain size distribution of sediments in three cascade canyon reservoirs (Xiaowan, Manwan and Dachaoshan) along Lancang River, China. Five phosphorus speciations including loosely bound P (ex-P), reductant soluble P (BD-P), metal oxide-bound P (NaOH-P) calcium-bound P (HCl-P) and residual-P were extracted and quantified. Results showed that in Manwan Reservoir HCl-P accounted for the largest part of total phosphorus (TP) (49.69%), while in Xiaowan and Dachaoshan reservoirs, NaOH-P was the most abundant speciation which accounted for 57.21% and 55.19% of total phosphorus respectively. Higher contents of bio-available phosphorus in Xiaowan and Dachaoshan reservoirs suggested a high rate of P releasing from sediments. Results also showed ex-P and HCl-P had positive correlation with Ca. Total phosphorus was positively correlated with Fe. The silt/clay contents of the sediments had close relationship with ex-P ( r = 0.413, p < 0.05), NaOH-P ( r = 0.428, p < 0.05) and BAP ( r = 0.458, p < 0.05). The concentration of Ca, Mn and silt/clay speciation in the sediments explained 40%, 10% and 4% of the spatial variation of phosphorus speciations, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy, carbon, water and their interactions determine agricultural production efficiency and sustainability. On the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), agricultural activities threaten the ecological security of the region, and agriculture itself is susceptible to climate change. In this study, we applied an energy-carbon-water nexus framework to assess the carbon emissions, water utilization, and energy flow, and their links with agricultural production on the QTP, using emergy analysis, footprint analysis (carbon footprint and water footprint) and a coupling model. The results showed that agricultural activities on the QTP released 2.17 × 1010 kgCO 2 -eq and absorbed 6.00 × 1010 kgCO 2 -eq, using 3.24 × 1022 sej of emergy and 8.19 × 109 m3 of water in 2018. Meanwhile, the energy-carbon-water nexus of agricultural production on the QTP was imbalanced, and the environmental footprint revealed large spatial heterogeneity at county scale. The coupling interaction among the energy-carbon-water nexus in agricultural production was investigated based on the coupling coordination model. Five categories of coupling interaction were identified by the degree of coordination. The largest emitter was agricultural input, especially electricity and nitrogen fertilizer, accounting for 24% and 7% of the total on average, respectively. With regard to emergy flows, renewable organic resources, accounted for 47%, making them the predominant in emergy inputs. The green water footprint (water from natural rainfall) at 51% was higher than the blue water footprint (water from irrigation) at 49%. More measurements to reduce carbon emission and improve the efficiency of energy usage and water usage are needed, such as optimizing planting patterns and structures, promoting cleaner energy, improving the efficiency of agrochemical use and proposing reasonable spatial planning for regional ecological development. Our findings provide a systematic reference for energy-carbon-water nexus analysis and sustainable agricultural development policy for decision-makers on the QTP. Pipe height in cylindrical neutron moderator is an important factor to flow pattern, temperature distribution and even the neutron characters. In this paper, the steady-state thermal analysis of cold neutron moderator is carrying out with different heights, conjugated heat transfer method and one-way coupled with a neutron transfer software. The different pipe heights, which is the jet-to-surface distances (H/D = 0.5~6), were compared using a 2D moderator model. The results show that vortex size and velocity gradient from container wall to vortex center vary with H/D, the center of recirculation zone nearly remain constant, and heat transfer effect is weakened on the target bottom surface. With H/D increasing, the velocity at bottom target surface is progressively decreased, and cooling effect is poor, leading to the rise in temperature. The optimal range cooling performance is (H/D) = 0.5~1 at Re = 1.7 × 105, and the enhancement of beam power further strengthens the thermal deposition difference between container and liquid hydrogen. The flow field distribution and thermal properties of supercritical hydrogen are crucial factors affecting the quality of neutrons output from spallation neutron source, which may contribute to the optimization design of the moderator. Several sensitivity studies on affecting heat transfer characteristics of liquid hydrogen inside a moderator were executed, and a choice was made to use a computational fluid dynamics method for numerical simulation. The sensitivity degree of factors affecting the heat transfer characteristics of liquid hydrogen are in sequence of inlet mass flow, beam power and operating pressure. Especially when the beam power is 500 kW (the temperature range of liquid hydrogen is about 20~30 K); where the effect of mass flow rate is remarkable, the cooling effect is best in the range of 60~90 g/s × 394 mm2. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature of liquid hydrogen is close to the bottom recirculation zone due to the influence of the flow field and the heat deposition distribution of the poisoned plate. The effect of variable pressure on the temperature of liquid hydrogen is not significant, whereas the sudden rise of wall temperature is observed near the large specific heat region of 15 bar. This study considers aerosol optical properties and direct radiative forcing over Harbin (126.63° E, 45.75° N), the highest latitude city in Northeast China, during 2017. Observations based on the CE-318 sun-photometer show that the annual mean values of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 500 nm and the Angstrom exponent (AE) at 440–870 nm over Harbin are respectively 0.26   ±   0.20 and 1.36   ±   0.26 . Aerosol loading is the highest in the spring followed by winter, and the lowest loading is in autumn. AE 440 – 870 is the highest in summer, second highest in winter, and lowest in autumn. The Santa Barbara DISORT Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model is used to estimate the shortwave aerosol radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere, on the Earth's surface and in the atmosphere, and the annual mean values are − 16.36   ±   18.42   Wm − 2 , − 71.01   ±   27.37   Wm − 2 and 54.65   ±   30.62   Wm − 2 , respectively, which indicate that aerosols cause climate effects of cooling the earth-atmosphere system, cooling the earth's surface and heating the atmosphere. Four main aerosol types in Harbin are classified via AOD and AE. Specifically, clean continental, mixed type, biomass burning and urban industry, and desert dust aerosols accounted for 51%, 38%, 9%, and 2% of the total, respectively. Aerosol radiative forcing varies greatly in different seasons, and the aerosol load and type from different emission sources have an important influence on the seasonal variation of radiative forcing. Tree species and afforestation age can affect soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) sequestration as well as soil properties through different litter input and microbial activities. However, uncertainty remains because the responses vary under different climates and prior land uses. A site-specific study was conducted to investigate the dissimilarities in plant litter, soil properties, and soil microbial biomass and their influencing factors of different aged (22, 32, and 44 years) larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) plantations and different aged (19, 30, and 43 years) Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) plantations. In general, afforestation increased soil organic carbon (SOC), soil total nitrogen (STN), soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and soil microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) contents compared with those of sparse grassland. However, there was still room for improvement in these variables compared with local natural secondary forest, which was dominated by white birch (Betula platyphylla , a deciduous broad-leaved tree species). Changes in STN, SOC, MBC, and MBN contents with afforestation age were almost insignificant in larch plantations, while significant increase can be found in STN (only in 10–20 cm soil layer), MBC and MBN in Mongolian pine plantations. The results indicated that larch was superior to Mongolian pine in soil C and N sequestration and soil fertility improvement at an early afforestation stage probably because of the higher C and N inputs from litter and higher N supply in the soil. There is an upper limit of carbon and nitrogen sequestration and soil fertility in the coniferous plantation, and mix planting of broad-leaved trees in coniferous forests may make up for this disadvantage. Simple Summary: Trophy hunting and mass tourism were introduced to Khunjerab National Park, northern Pakistan to generate income for the community and help conserve and sustain the ecosystem in the region. These initiatives have provided economic benefits, but only at the cost of other environmental problems, as both trophy hunting and mass tourism have resulted in various ecological issues. Trophy hunting has not been based on scientific population data and has thus not helped increase numbers of wild ungulates or wild carnivores. Although mass tourism has increased enormously in this region, it has damaged the ecosystem through pollution generation and negatively impacted wildlife. We suggest that trophy hunting should be stopped, and mass tourism should be shifted to ecotourism as a sustainable solution to help improve the ecosystem, while generating income for the local community. Further studies are required to investigate ecotourism as a potential mitigation measure for the conservation issues in this region. Trophy hunting and mass tourism are the two major interventions designed to provide various socioeconomic and ecological benefits at the local and regional levels. However, these interventions have raised some serious concerns that need to be addressed. This study was conducted in Khunjerab National Park (KNP) with an aim to analyze comparatively the socioeconomic and ecological impacts of trophy hunting and mass tourism over the last three decades within the context of sustainability. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with key stakeholders and household interviews were conducted to collect data on trophy hunting and mass tourism, and on local attitudes towards these two interventions in and around KNP. The results revealed that 170 Ibex (Capra sibirica) and 12 Blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) were hunted in the study area over the past three decades, and trophy hunting was not based on a sustainable harvest level. Trophy hunting on average generated USD 16,272 annual revenue, which was invested in community development. However, trophy hunting has greatly changed the attitudes of local residents towards wildlife: a positive attitude towards the wild ungulates and strongly negative attitude towards wild carnivores. In addition, trophy hunting has reduced the availability of ungulate prey species for Snow leopards (Panthera uncia), and consequently, Snow leopards have increased their predation on domestic livestock. This has, in turn, increased human–snow leopard conflict, as negative attitudes towards carnivores result in retaliatory killing of Snow leopards. Furthermore, according to official record data, the number of tourists to KNP has increased tremendously by 10,437.8%, from 1382 in 1999 to 145,633 in 2018. Mass tourism on average generated USD 33,904 annually and provided opportunities for locals to earn high incomes, but it caused damages to the environment and ecosystem in KNP through pollution generation and negative impacts on wildlife. Considering the limited benefits and significant problems created by trophy hunting and mass tourism, we suggest trophy hunting should be stopped and mass tourism should be shifted to ecotourism in and around KNP. Ecotourism could mitigate human–Snow leopard conflicts and help conserve the fragile ecosystem, while generating enough revenue incentives for the community to protect biodiversity and compensate for livestock depredation losses to Snow leopards. Exposure to air pollutants is a significant trigger of asthma in China. However, there is little evidence of which pollutants are associated most with asthma at the national level, and little research on pollutants' critical values based on concentration-response (C-R) curves. Further, the potential influential variables of air pollutants have not been identified clearly. In this study, logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the associations between air pollutants and asthma based on 14176 samples across 12 provinces in China in 2015. We also fit a generalized additive model to evaluate the nonlinear C-R curves to identify the critical values. Our results showed that PM 10-2.5 (odds ratios, 95% confidence intervals: 0.95, 0.90–1.00) and NO X (odds ratios, 95% confidence intervals: 0.98, 0.96–1.00) were associated significantly with asthma's prevalence (p < 0.05) in China, in which the correlation between NO X pollution and asthma's prevalence was relatively more significant. The risk of asthma increased significantly when the average annual PM 10-2.5 and NO X concentrations exceeded approximately 40 μg/m3 and 67 μg/m3, respectively. The results of structural equation modelling confirmed that economic scale was the most important driving force for PM 10-2.5 and NO X pollution. Economic scale primarily had a direct influence on increased PM 10-2.5 concentrations, while it primarily had an indirect influence on increased NO X concentrations. Our findings contribute to the limited evidence on PM 10-2.5 and NO X pollution's effects on asthma's prevalence in China. • PM 10-2.5 and NO X were associated significantly with prevalence of asthma in China. • The critical value of PM 10-2.5 concentrations for asthma was 40 μg/m3 in China. • The critical value of NO X concentrations for asthma was 67 μg/m3 in China. • Economic scale had the strongest impact on PM 10-2.5 and NO X pollution. Optical design parameters for a ground-based infrared sensor rely strongly on the target's optical radiation properties. Infrared (IR) optical observability and imaging simulations of an Earth entry vehicle were evaluated using a comprehensive numerical model. Based on a ground-based IR detection system, this model considered many physical mechanisms including thermochemical nonequilibrium reacting flow, radiative properties, optical propagation, detection range, atmospheric transmittance, and imaging processes. An orbital test vehicle (OTV) was selected as the research object for analysis of its observability using a ground-based infrared system. IR radiance contours, maximum detecting range (MDR), and thermal infrared (TIR) pixel arrangement were modeled. The results show that the distribution of IR radiance is strongly dependent on the angle of observation and the spectral band. Several special phenomena, including a strong receiving region (SRR), a characteristic attitude, a blind zone, and an equivalent zone, are all found in the varying altitude MDR distributions of mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) and long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) irradiances. In addition, the possible increase in detectivity can greatly improve the MDR at high altitudes, especially for the backward and forward views. The difference in the peak radiance of the LWIR images is within one order of magnitude, but the difference in that of the MWIR images varies greatly. Improving the flame stability and thermal behavior of the micro-combustor (MC) are major challenges in microscale combustion. In this paper, the micro combustions of an H2/air premixed flame in a swirl MC with various channel diameters (Din = 2, 3, 4 mm) were analyzed based on an established three-dimensional numerical model. The effects of hydrogen mass flow rate, thermal conductivity of walls, and the preferential transport of species were investigated. The results indicated that the flame type was characterized by the presence of two recirculation zones. The flame was anchored by the recirculation zones, and the anchoring location of the flame root was the starting position of the recirculation zones. The recirculation zones had a larger distribution of local equivalence ratio, especially in the proximity of the flame root, indicating the formation of a radical pool. The combustion efficiency increased with an increasing Din due to the longer residence time of the reactants. Furthermore, the MC with Din = 2 mm obtained the highest outer wall temperature distribution. However, the MC with Din = 4 mm had a better uniformity of outer wall temperature and large emitter efficiency due to the larger radiation surface. An increase in thermal conductivity boosts the thermal performance of combustion efficiency, emitter efficiency, and wall temperature uniformity. But there is a critical point of thermal conductivity that can increase the thermal performance. The above results can offer us significant guidance for designing MC with high thermal performance.
