1. Analysis of an in-service rupture of the Inner First Wall of Tore Supra

Abstract

The last experimental campaign of Tore Supra was also the last one with a set of plasma facing components mainly dating from the assembly of the machine in 1988. This campaign was interrupted a few days ahead of schedule because of the rupture of one coolant tube of the Inner First Wall (IFW). The rupture was observed by an abrupt increase of the pressure in the vessel. It was caused by a water leak which occurred two seconds after the end of the lower hybrid heating pulse during the current ramp-down. Investigations show that the accident is not related to the operation of the machine or a weaker element but rather to a localised heat flux exceeding the heat removal capability of the IFW.

2. Heat flux deposition pattern on the inner first wall of Tore Supra

Abstract

The Inner First Wall (IFW) is the main limiter in Tore Supra for long and powerful discharges. The original graphite IFW was partly damaged by 8 years of operation and a sector of 60{\textdegree} was replaced between 1995 and 1997 by CFC brazed elements. They are designed to accept twice as much flux (2 MW/m${}^2$) as the older ones and are expected to be more resilient. The new elements gave the opportunity to install diagnostics (thermocouples and langmuir probes) on a poloidal sector, to characterise the behaviour of the new IFW and especially the heat flux profile. The pattern doesn't follow the cosine law and is governed by strong perpendicular heat flux and abnormal deposition at the contact point between the limiter and the plasma. The most energetic shots of the last campaign showed that the IFW could be loaded with twice the power deposited during these shots.

3. Heat flux deposition on plasma-facing components using a convective model with ripple and Shafranov shift

Abstract

A heat flux deposition code is a very useful tool for the design of plasma-facing components. The classical cosine model representative of the convective parallel heat flux was coded within the standard finite element code of the CEA Castem 2000. Two perturbations to the idealised magnetic surfaces were taken into account: the Shafranov shift and the ripple of the toroidal magnetic field. The calculation scheme -- named Tokaflu -- was confronted to previous computations on bottom modular limiters and to experiments on the inner first wall. The code was used to optimise the shape of future plasma-facing components in Tore Supra designed for the CIEL project, namely the toroidal pumped limiter and its neutralisers. Developments are under way to include the shadowing of the components, other power deposition schemes and possibly later plasma sections other than circular.

4. Evidence of damage in carbon fibre composite tiles joined to a metallic heat sink under high heat flux fatigue

Abstract

The two years experience with Active Metal Casting flat bonds shows that this technology is suitable for the heat fluxes expected in Tore Supra (10 MW/m${}^2$). Tests were pursued up to 3330 cycles, with elements still functional. At higher heat fluxes, fatigue damage is observed, but the bond resists remarkably well with no tile detachment. Examination of such deliberately damaged bonds showed distributed cracking, proving the absence of any weak link. The limitations to those higher heat fluxes are more related to the design and the base materials than to the bond itself.

Abstract

SATIR is a new test-bed installed at Tore Supra to perform non destructive examination of actively cooled plasma facing components. Hot and cold water flow successively in the cooling tube of the component and the surface temperature is recorded with an infrared camera. Defects are detected by a slower temperature response above unbrazed areas. The connection between temperature differences and defect sizes is the main difficulty. It is established by tests of standard defects and thermal transient calculations of defective geometries. SATIR has been in use for two years and has proved to be very valuable to test industrial components as well as prototypes.

6. A Possible Method of Carbon Deposit Mapping on Plasma Facing Components Using Infrared Thermography

Abstract

The material eroded from the surface of plasma facing components is redeposited partly close to high heat flux areas. At these locations, the deposit is heated by the plasma and the deposition pattern evolves depending on the operation parameters. The mapping of the deposit is still a matter of intense scientific activity, especially during the course of experimental campaigns. A method based on the comparison of surface temperature maps, obtained in situ by infrared cameras and by theoretical modelling is proposed. The difference between the two is attributed to the thermal resistance added by deposited material, and expressed as a deposit thickness. The method benefits of elaborated imaging techniques such as possibility theory and fuzzy logics. 7. A geometrical approach to evaluating the heat flux peaking factor on first wall components

Abstract

In magnetic fusion experiments, a simple technique to evaluate the heat flux on first wall components is a key to controlled plasma surface interaction. The heat flux can be characterized by the peaking factor which is the ratio of the peak heat flux to the average heat flux. The peaking factor can be calculated exactly using simple derivations and standard software tools. This analysis is applied to an Iter class experiment for plasma wall contact during start up phases at 15 MW, in idealised, realistic and misaligned situations. Even though the peaking factors are usually above 10, the peak heat load on the wall remains moderate at a few MW/m${}^2$.

Abstract

WEST is an MA class superconducting, actively cooled, full tungsten (W) tokamak, designed to operate in long pulses up to 1000 s. In support of ITER operation and DEMO conceptual activities, key missions of WEST are: (i) qualification of high heat flux plasma-facing components in integrating both technological and physics aspects in relevant heat and particle exhaust conditions, particularly for the tungsten monoblocks foreseen in ITER divertor; (ii) integrated steady-state operation at high confinement, with a focus on power exhaust issues. During the phase 1 of operation (2017–2020), a set of actively cooled ITER-grade plasma facing unit prototypes was integrated into the inertially cooled W coated startup lower divertor. Up to 8.8 MW of RF power has been coupled to the plasma and divertor heat flux of up to 6 MW m−2 were reached. Long pulse operation was started, using the upper actively cooled divertor, with a discharge of about 1 min achieved. This paper gives an overview of the results achieved in phase 1. Perspectives for phase 2, operating with the full capability of the device with the complete ITER-grade actively cooled lower divertor, are also described.

Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. Abstract

As a consequence of its position and functions, the ITER blanket system will be subjected to significant heat loads under nominal reference conditions. Therefore, the design of its cooling system is particularly demanding. Coolant water is distributed individually to the 440 blanket modules (BMs) through manifold piping, which makes it a highly parallelized system. The mass flow rate distribution is finely tuned to meet all operation constraints: adequate margin to burn out in the plasma facing components, even distribution of water flow among the so-called plasma-facing “fingers” of the Blanket First Wall panels, high enough water flow rate to avoid excessive water temperature in the outlet pipes, maximum allowable water velocity lower than 7 m/s in manifold pipes. Furthermore the overall pressure drop and flow rate in each BM shall be within the fixed specified design limit to avoid an unduly unbalance of cooling among the 440 modules. Analyses have to be carried out following a computational fluid-dynamic (CFD) approach based on the finite volume method and adopting a CFD commercial code to assess the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of each single circuit of the ITER blanket cooling system. This paper describes the code benchmarking needed to determine the best method to get reliable and timely results. Since experimental tests are available in ITER Organization on full scale prototypes of Shield Blocks #08 and #14, CFD analyses have been performed to investigate their fluid-dynamic behaviour under steady state conditions and compare the numerical and experimental results. Results obtained are presented and critically discussed.

Abstract

The ITER Organization (IO) developed a thermal-hydraulic (TH) model of the complex first wall and blanket (FW/BLK) cooling channels to determine gas flow rate and pressure required to effectively blow out the water in the FW/BLK. In addition, US ITER conducted experiments for selected geometries of FW/BLK flow channels to predict the blowout parameters. The analysis indicates that as low as 2 MPa of pressure difference over the blanket modules will ensure substantial evacuation of the water in blankets with just a few percent remaining in the blanket flow channels. A limited validation study indicates that the analysis yields less conservative results to compare against data collected from experiments. Therefore, the designed blow out flow of the drying system was selected with a large margin above the measured values to ensure the blow out operation.

Abstract

The blanket system is the ITER reactor component devoted to providing a physical boundary for plasma transients and contributing to thermal and nuclear shielding of vacuum vessel, magnets and external components. It is expected to be subjected to significant heat loads under nominal conditions and its cooling system has to ensure an adequate cooling, preventing any risk of critical heat flux occurrence while complying with pressure drop limits. At the University of Palermo a study has been performed, in cooperation with the ITER Organization, to investigate the steady state hydraulic behaviour of the ITER blanket standard sector cooling system. A theoretical–computational approach based on the finite volume method has been followed, adopting the RELAP5 system code. Finite volume models of the most critical blanket cooling circuits have been set-up, realistically simulating the coolant flow domain. The steady state hydraulic behaviour of each cooling circuit has been investigated, determining its hydraulic characteristic function and assessing the spatial distribution of coolant mass flow rates, velocities and pressure drops under reference nominal conditions. Results obtained have indicated that the investigated cooling circuits are able to provide an effective cooling to blanket modules, generally meeting ITER requirements in term of pressure drop and velocity distribution, except for a couple of circuits that are being revised.

Abstract

Scaffold proteins modulate signalling pathway activity spatially and temporally. In budding yeast, the scaffold Bem1 contributes to polarity axis establishment by regulating the GTPase Cdc42. Although different models have been proposed for Bem1 function, there is little direct evidence for an underlying mechanism. Here, we find that Bem1 directly augments the guanine exchange factor (GEF) activity of Cdc24. Bem1 also increases GEF phosphorylation by the p21-activated kinase (PAK), Cla4. Phosphorylation abrogates the scaffold-dependent stimulation of GEF activity, rendering Cdc24 insensitive to additional Bem1. Thus, Bem1 stimulates GEF activity in a reversible fashion, contributing to signalling flux through Cdc42. The contribution of Bem1 to GTPase dynamics was borne-out by in vivo imaging: active Cdc42 was enriched at the cell pole in hypophosphorylated cdc24 mutants, while hyperphosphorylated cdc24 mutants that were resistant to scaffold stimulation displayed a deficit in active Cdc42 at the pole. These findings illustrate the self-regulatory properties that scaffold proteins confer on signalling pathways.

Abstract

The coupling of endocytosis and exocytosis underlies fundamental biological processes ranging from fertilization to neuronal activity and cellular polarity. However, the mechanisms governing the spatial organization of endocytosis and exocytosis require clarification. Using a quantitative imaging-based screen in budding yeast, we identified 89 mutants displaying defects in the localization of either one or both pathways. High-resolution single-vesicle tracking revealed that the endocytic and exocytic mutants she4∆ and bud6∆ alter post-Golgi vesicle dynamics in opposite ways. The endocytic and exocytic pathways display strong interdependence during polarity establishment while being more independent during polarity maintenance. Systems analysis identified the exocyst complex as a key network hub, rich in genetic interactions with endocytic and exocytic components. Exocyst mutants displayed altered endocytic and post-Golgi vesicle dynamics and interspersed endocytic and exocytic domains compared with control cells.
