Purpose: In MRI, motion artifacts can significantly degrade image quality. Motion artifact correction methods using deep neural networks usually required extensive training on large datasets, making them time-consuming and resource-intensive. In this paper, an unsupervised deep learning-based motion artifact correction method for turbo-spin echo MRI is proposed using the deep image prior framework., Theory and Methods: The proposed approach takes advantage of the high impedance to motion artifacts offered by the neural network parameterization to remove motion artifacts in MR images. The framework consists of parameterization of MR image, automatic spatial transformation, and motion simulation model. The proposed method synthesizes motion-corrupted images from the motion-corrected images generated by the convolutional neural network, where an optimization process minimizes the objective function between the synthesized images and the acquired images., Results: In the simulation study of 280 slices from 14 subjects, the proposed method showed a significant increase in the averaged structural similarity index measure by 0.2737 in individual coil images and by 0.4550 in the root-sum-of-square images. In addition, the ablation study demonstrated the effectiveness of each proposed component in correcting motion artifacts compared to the corrected images produced by the baseline method. Purpose: Urolithiasis is a chronic condition that leads to repeated CT scans throughout the patient's life. The goal was to assess the diagnostic performance and image quality of submillisievert abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) using deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) in urolithiasis., Methods: 57 patients with suspected urolithiasis underwent both non-contrast low-dose (LD) and ULD abdominopelvic CT. Raw image data of ULD CT were reconstructed using hybrid iterative reconstruction (ASIR-V 70%) and high-strength-level DLIR (DLIR-H). The performance of ULD CT for the detection of urinary stones was assessed by two readers and compared with LD CT with ASIR-V 70% as a reference standard. Image quality was assessed subjectively and objectively., Results: 266 stones were detected in 38 patients. Mean effective dose was 0.59 mSv for ULD CT and 1.96 mSv for LD CT. For diagnostic performance, sensitivity and specificity were 89% and 94%, respectively, for ULDCT with DLIR-H. There was an almost perfect intra-observer concordance on ULD CT with DLIR-H versus LDCT with ASIR-V 70% (ICC = 0.90 and 0.90 for the two readers). Image noise was significantly lower and signal-to-noise ratio significantly higher with DLIR-H compared to ASIR-V 70%. Subjective image quality was also significantly better with ULDCT with DLIR-H., Conclusion: ULD CT with Deep Learning Image Reconstruction maintains a good diagnostic performance in urolithiasis, with better image quality than hybrid iterative reconstruction and a significant radiation dose reduction., (© 2024. Purpose: Speed and accuracy are two critical factors in dose calculation for radiotherapy. Analytical Anisotropic Algorithm (AAA) is a rapid dose calculation algorithm but has dose errors in tissue margin area. Acuros XB (AXB) has high accuracy but takes long time to calculate. To improve the dose accuracy on the tissue margin area for AAA, we proposed a novel deep learning-based dose accuracy improvement method using Margin-Net combined with Margin-Loss., Methods: A novel model 'Margin-Net' was designed with a Margin Attention Mechanism to generate special margin-related features. Margin-Loss was introduced to consider the dose errors and dose gradients in tissues margin area. Ninety-five VMAT cervical cancer cases with paired AAA and AXB dose were enrolled in our study: 76 cases for training and 19 cases for testing. Tissues Margin Masks were generated from RT contours with 6 mm extension. Tissues Margin Mask, AAA dose and CTs were input data; AXB dose was used as reference dose for model training and evaluation. Comparison experiments were performed to evaluated effectiveness of Margin-Net and Margin-Loss., Results: Compared to AXB dose, the 3D gamma passing rate (1%/1 mm, 10% threshold) for 19 test cases 95.75 ± 1.05% using Margin-Net with Margin-Loss, which was significantly higher than the original AAA dose (73.64 ± 3.46%). The passing rate reduced to 94.07 ± 1.16% without Margin-Loss and 87.3 ± 1.18% if Margin-Net key structure 'MAM' was also removed., Conclusion: The proposed novel tissues margin-based dose conversion method can significantly improve the dose accuracy of Analytical Anisotropic Algorithm to be comparable to AXB algorithm. Histopathologic evaluation of muscle biopsy samples is essential for classifying and diagnosing muscle diseases. However, the numbers of experienced specialists and pathologists are limited. Although new technologies such as artificial intelligence are expected to improve medical reach, their use with rare diseases, such as muscle diseases, is challenging because of the limited availability of training datasets. To address this gap, we developed an algorithm based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and collected 4041 microscopic images of 1400 hematoxylin-and-eosin-stained pathology slides stored in the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry for training CNNs. Our trained algorithm differentiated idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (mostly treatable) from hereditary muscle diseases (mostly non-treatable) with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.996 and achieved better sensitivity and specificity than the diagnoses done by nine physicians under limited diseases and conditions. Furthermore, it successfully and accurately classified four subtypes of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies with an average AUC of 0.958 and classified seven subtypes of hereditary muscle disease with an average AUC of 0.936. We also established a method to validate the similarity between the predictions made by the algorithm and the seven physicians using visualization technology and clarified the validity of the predictions. There is increasing focus on applying deep learning methods to electrocardiograms (ECGs), with recent studies showing that neural networks (NNs) can predict future heart failure or atrial fibrillation from the ECG alone. However, large numbers of ECGs are needed to train NNs, and many ECGs are currently only in paper format, which are not suitable for NN training. We developed a fully-automated online ECG digitisation tool to convert scanned paper ECGs into digital signals. Using automated horizontal and vertical anchor point detection, the algorithm automatically segments the ECG image into separate images for the 12 leads and a dynamical morphological algorithm is then applied to extract the signal of interest. We then validated the performance of the algorithm on 515 digital ECGs, of which 45 were printed, scanned and redigitised. The automated digitisation tool achieved 99.0% correlation between the digitised signals and the ground truth ECG (n = 515 standard 3-by-4 ECGs) after excluding ECGs with overlap of lead signals. Without exclusion, the performance of average correlation was from 90 to 97% across the leads on all 3-by-4 ECGs. There was a 97% correlation for 12-by-1 and 3-by-1 ECG formats after excluding ECGs with overlap of lead signals. Without exclusion, the average correlation of some leads in 12-by-1 ECGs was 60–70% and the average correlation of 3-by-1 ECGs achieved 80–90%. ECGs that were printed, scanned, and redigitised, our tool achieved 96% correlation with the original signals. We have developed and validated a fully-automated, user-friendly, online ECG digitisation tool. Unlike other available tools, this does not require any manual segmentation of ECG signals. The hippocampus is a critical component of the brain and is associated with many neurological disorders. It can be further subdivided into several subfields, and accurate segmentation of these subfields is of great significance for diagnosis and research. However, the structures of hippocampal subfields are irregular and have complex boundaries, and their voxel values are close to surrounding brain tissues, making the segmentation task highly challenging. Currently, many automatic segmentation tools exist for hippocampal subfield segmentation, but they suffer from high time costs and low segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new dual-branch segmentation network structure (DSnet) based on deep learning for hippocampal subfield segmentation. While traditional convolutional neural network-based methods are effective in capturing hierarchical structures, they struggle to establish long-term dependencies. The DSnet integrates the Transformer architecture and a hybrid attention mechanism, enhancing the network's global perceptual capabilities. Moreover, the dual-branch structure of DSnet leverages the segmentation results of the hippocampal region to facilitate the segmentation of its subfields. We validate the efficacy of our algorithm on the public Kulaga-Yoskovitz dataset. Experimental results indicate that our method is more effective in segmenting hippocampal subfields than conventional single-branch network structures. Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a major public health concern and adversely affects people's mobility and quality of life. Traditional assessment methods are subjective and qualitative by means of clinician observation and patient self-reporting, which may lead to inaccurate assessment and reduce the effectiveness of treatment in clinical practice. Gait analysis becomes a commonly used approach for monitoring human motion behaviors, which can be applied to specific diagnosis and assessment of CAI. However, it is still challenging to recognize the pathological gait pattern for CAI subjects. In this paper, we propose an integrated deep learning framework to solve the CAI recognition problem using kinematic data. Specifically, inspired by the biomechanics of human body system, we create a simple graph neural network (GNN), termed GaitNet, that operates on a spatial domain and exploits interactions among 3-D joint coordinates. We also develop an attention reinforcement learning (ARL) model that determines attention weights of frames on a temporal domain, which is combined with GaitNet for prediction. The effectiveness of our method is validated on the kinematic NEU-CAI dataset which is collected in our institution using a stereophotogrammetric system. According to extensive experiments, we demonstrate that the selected key phases (i.e., sequences of frames with high attentions) significantly increase the predictability of the proposed biomechanics-based GNN model to differentiate between CAI cohort and control cohort. Moreover, we show a significant prediction accuracy improvement (20%-25%) by our approach compared to state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning methods.

The primary challenges in tea production under multiple stress exposures have negatively affected its global market sustainability, so introducing an infield fast technique for monitoring tea leaves' stresses has tremendous urgent needs. Therefore, this study aimed to propose an efficient method for the detection of stress symptoms based on a portable smartphone with deep learning models. Firstly, a database containing over 10,000 images of tea garden canopies in complex natural scenes was developed, which included healthy (no stress) and three types of stress (tea anthracnose (TA), tea blister blight (TB) and sunburn (SB)). Then, YOLOv5m and YOLOv8m algorithms were adapted to discriminate the four types of stress symptoms; where the YOLOv8m algorithm achieved better performance in the identification of healthy leaves (98%), TA (92.0%), TB (68.4%) and SB (75.5%). Furthermore, the YOLOv8m algorithm was used to construct a model for differentiation of disease severity of TA, and a satisfactory result was obtained with the accuracy of mild, moderate, and severe TA infections were 94%, 96%, and 91%, respectively. Besides, we found that CNN kernels of YOLOv8m could efficiently extract the texture characteristics of the images at layer 2, and these characteristics can clearly distinguish different types of stress symptoms. This makes great contributions to the YOLOv8m model to achieve high-precision differentiation of four types of stress symptoms. Applying affective computing techniques to recognize fear and combining them with portable signal monitors makes it possible to create real-time detection systems that could act as bodyguards when users are in danger. With this aim, this paper presents a fear recognition method based on physiological signals obtained from wearable devices. The procedure involves creating two-dimensional feature maps from the raw signals, using data augmentation and feature selection algorithms, followed by deep learning-based classification models, taking inspiration from those used in image processing. This proposal has been validated with two different datasets, achieving, in WEMAC, WESAD 3-classes, and WESAD 2-classes, F1-score results of 78.13%, 88.07%, and 99.60%, respectively, and 79.90%, 89.12%, and 99.60% in accuracy. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates the feasibility of implementing the proposed method on the Coral Edge TPU device, prepared to make inferences on the edge.

Purpose: The accurate age estimation of cadavers is essential for their identification. However, conventional methods fail to yield adequate age estimation especially in elderly cadavers. We developed a deep learning algorithm for age estimation on CT images of the vertebral column and checked its accuracy., Method: For the development of our deep learning algorithm, we included 1,120 CT data of the vertebral column of 140 patients for each of 8 age decades. The deep learning model of regression analysis based on Visual Geometry Group-16 (VGG16) was improved in its estimation accuracy by bagging. To verify its accuracy, we applied our deep learning algorithm to estimate the age of 219 cadavers who had undergone postmortem CT (PMCT). The mean difference and the mean absolute error (MAE), the standard error of the estimate (SEE) between the known- and the estimated age, were calculated. Correlation analysis using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman analysis were performed to assess differences between the known- and the estimated age., Results: For the 219 cadavers, the mean difference between the known- and the estimated age was 0.30 years; it was 4.36 years for the MAE, and 5.48 years for the SEE. The ICC (2,1) was 0.96 (95 % confidence interval: 0.95-0.97, p < 0.001). Purpose: The objective of this study was to develop a deep learning model, using the ConvNeXt algorithm, that can effectively differentiate between ovarian endometriosis cysts (OEC) and benign mucinous cystadenomas (MC) by analyzing ultrasound images. The performance of the model in the diagnostic differentiation of these two conditions was also evaluated., Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on OEC and MC patients who had sought medical attention at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University between August 2018 and May 2023. The diagnosis was established based on postoperative pathology or the characteristics of aspirated fluid guided by ultrasound, serving as the gold standard. Ultrasound images were collected and subjected to screening and preprocessing procedures. The data set was randomly divided into training, validation, and testing sets in a ratio of 5:3:2. Transfer learning was utilized to determine the initial weights of the ConvNeXt deep learning algorithm, which were further adjusted by retraining the algorithm using the training and validation ultrasound images to establish a new deep learning model. The weights that yielded the highest accuracy were selected to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the model using the validation set. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. Additionally, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and odds ratio were calculated. Decision curve analysis (DCA) curves were plotted., Results: The study included 786 ultrasound images from 184 patients diagnosed with either OEC or MC. The deep learning model achieved an AUC of 0.90 (95 % CI: 0.85-0.95) in accurately distinguishing between the two conditions, with a sensitivity of 90 % (95 % CI: 84 %-95 %), specificity of 90 % (95 % CI: 77 %-97 %), a positive predictive value of 96 % (95 % CI: 91 %-99 %), a negative predictive value of 77 % (95 % CI: 63 %-88 %), a positive likelihood ratio of 9.27 (95 % CI: 3.65-23.56), and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.11 (95 % CI: 0.06-0.19). The DCA curve demonstrated the practical clinical utility of the model., Conclusions: The deep learning model developed using the ConvNeXt algorithm exhibits high accuracy (90 %) in distinguishing between OEC and MC. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning that utilizes neural networks, has seen significant advancements in recent years. These advancements have led to breakthroughs in a wide range of fields, from natural language processing to computer vision, and have the potential to revolutionize many industries or organizations. They have also demonstrated exceptional performance in the identification and mapping of seagrass images. However, these deep learning models, particularly the popular Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) require architectural engineering and hyperparameter tuning. This paper proposes a Deep Neuroevolutionary (DNE) model that can automate the architectural engineering and hyperparameter tuning of CNNs models by developing and using a novel metaheuristic algorithm, named 'Boosted Atomic Orbital Search (BAOS)'. The proposed BAOS is an improved version of the recently proposed Atomic Orbital Search (AOS) algorithm which is based on the principle of atomic model and quantum mechanics. The proposed algorithm leverages the power of the Lévy flight technique to boost the performance of the AOS algorithm. The proposed DNE algorithm (BAOS-CNN) is trained, evaluated and compared with six popular optimisation algorithms on a patch-based multi-species seagrass dataset. This proposed BAOS-CNN model achieves the highest overall accuracy (97.48%) among the seven evolutionary-based CNN models. The proposed model also achieves the state-of-the-art overall accuracy of 92.30% and 93.5% on the publicly available four classes and five classes version of the 'DeepSeagrass' dataset, respectively. Physical aggression is a serious and widespread problem in society, affecting people worldwide. It impacts nearly every aspect of life. While some studies explore the root causes of violent behavior, others focus on urban planning in high-crime areas. Real-time violence detection, powered by artificial intelligence, offers a direct and efficient solution, reducing the need for extensive human supervision and saving lives. This paper is a continuation of a systematic mapping study and its objective is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date review of AI-based video violence detection, specifically in physical assaults. Regarding violence detection, the following have been grouped and categorized from the review of the selected papers: 21 challenges that remain to be solved, 28 datasets that have been created in recent years, 21 keyframe extraction methods, 16 types of algorithm inputs, as well as a wide variety of algorithm combinations and their corresponding accuracy results. Given the lack of recent reviews dealing with the detection of violence in video, this study is considered necessary and relevant.

Accurate delineation of key waveforms in an ECG is a critical step in extracting relevant features to support the diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions. Although deep learning based methods using segmentation models to locate P, QRS, and T waves have shown promising results, their ability to handle arrhythmias has not been studied in any detail. In this paper we investigate the effect of arrhythmias on delineation quality and develop strategies to improve performance in such cases. We introduce a U-Net-like segmentation model for ECG delineation with a particular focus on diverse arrhythmias. This is followed by a post-processing algorithm which removes noise and automatically determines the boundaries of P, QRS, and T waves. Our model has been trained on a diverse dataset and evaluated against the LUDB and QTDB datasets to show strong performance, with F1-scores exceeding 99% for QRS and T waves, and over 97% for P waves in the LUDB dataset. Furthermore, we assess various models across a wide array of arrhythmias and observe that models with a strong performance on standard benchmarks may still perform poorly on arrhythmias that are underrepresented in these benchmarks, such as tachycardias. Deep learning models have demonstrated remarkable performance in the classification of motor imagery BCI systems. However, these models exhibit sensitivity to challenging trials, often called hard trials, leading to performance degradation. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing two novel methods for identifying and mitigating the impact of hard trials on model performance. The first method leverages model prediction scores to discern hard trials. The second approach employs a quantitative explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) approach, enabling a more transparent and interpretable means of hard trial identification. The identified hard trials are removed from the entire motor imagery training and validation dataset, and the deep learning model is further re-trained using the dataset without hard trials. To evaluate the efficacy of these proposed methods, experiments were conducted on the Open BMI dataset. The results for hold-out analysis show that the proposed quantitative XAI- based hard trial removal method has statistically improved the average classification accuracy of the baseline deep CNN model from 63.77% to 68.70%, with p -value =7.66e-11for the subject-specific MI classification. Additionally, analyzing the scalp map representing the average relevance scores of correctly classified trials compared to a misclassified trial provides a deeper insight into identifying hard trials. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) reconstruction has made significant progress with the introduction of Deep Learning (DL) technology combined with Compressed Sensing (CS). However, most existing methods require large fully sampled training datasets to supervise the training process, which may be unavailable in many applications. Current unsupervised models also show limitations in performance or speed and may face unaligned distributions during testing. This paper proposes an unsupervised method to train competitive reconstruction models that can generate high-quality samples in an end-to-end style. Firstly teacher models are trained by filling the re-undersampled images and compared with the undersampled images in a self-supervised manner. The teacher models are then distilled to train another cascade model that can leverage the entire undersampled k-space during its training and testing. Additionally, we propose an adaptive distillation method to re-weight the samples based on the variance of teachers, which represents the confidence of the reconstruction results, to improve the quality of distillation. Experimental results on multiple datasets demonstrate that our method significantly accelerates the inference process while preserving or even improving the performance compared to the teacher model. In our tests, the distilled models show 5%-10% improvements in PSNR and SSIM compared with no distillation and are 10 times faster than the teacher.

Deep learning models often need sufficient supervision (i.e., labelled data) in order to be trained effectively. By contrast, humans can swiftly learn to identify important anatomy in medical images like MRI and CT scans, with minimal guidance. This recognition capability easily generalises to new images from different medical facilities and to new tasks in different settings. This rapid and generalisable learning ability is largely due to the compositional structure of image patterns in the human brain, which are not well represented in current medical models. In this paper, we study the utilisation of compositionality in learning more interpretable and generalisable representations for medical image segmentation. Overall, we propose that the underlying generative factors that are used to generate the medical images satisfy compositional equivariance property, where each factor is compositional (e.g., corresponds to human anatomy) and also equivariant to the task. Hence, a good representation that approximates well the ground truth factor has to be compositionally equivariant. By modelling the compositional representations with learnable von-Mises-Fisher (vMF) kernels, we explore how different design and learning biases can be used to enforce the representations to be more compositionally equivariant under un-, weakly-, and semi-supervised settings. Extensive results show that our methods achieve the best performance over several strong baselines on the task of semi-supervised domain-generalised medical image segmentation. Background: Metastatic femoral tumors may lead to pathological fractures during daily activities. A CT-based finite element analysis of a patient's femurs was shown to assist orthopedic surgeons in making informed decisions about the risk of fracture and the need for a prophylactic fixation. Improving the accuracy of such analyses ruqires an automatic and accurate segmentation of the tumors and their automatic inclusion in the finite element model. We present herein a deep learning algorithm (nnU-Net) to automatically segment lytic tumors within the femur., Method: A dataset consisting of fifty CT scans of patients with manually annotated femoral tumors was created. Forty of them, chosen randomly, were used for training the nnU-Net, while the remaining ten CT scans were used for testing. The deep learning model's performance was compared to two experienced radiologists., Findings: The proposed algorithm outperformed the current state-of-the-art solutions, achieving dice similarity scores of 0.67 and 0.68 on the test data when compared to two experienced radiologists, while the dice similarity score for inter-individual variability between the radiologists was 0.73., Interpretation: The automatic algorithm may segment lytic femoral tumors in CT scans as accurately as experienced radiologists with similar dice similarity scores. In recent years, fatigue driving has become the main cause of traffic accidents, leading to increased attention towards fatigue detection systems. However, the pooling and strided convolutional operations in fatigue detection algorithm based on traditional deep learning methods may led to the loss of some useful information. This paper proposed a novel τ -shaped convolutional network ( τ Net ) aiming to address this issue. Unlike traditional network structures, τ Net incorporates the operations of upsampling features and concatenating high- and low-level features, enabling full utilization of useful information. Moreover, considering that the fatigue state is a mental state involving temporal evolution, we proposed the novel long short-term memory (LSTM)- τ -shaped convolutional network (LSTM- τ Net ), a parallel structure composed of LSTM and τ Net for fatigue detection, where τ Net extracts time-invariant features with location information, and LSTM extracts long temporal dependencies. We compared LSTM- τ Net with six competing methods based on two datasets. Results showed that the proposed algorithm achieved higher classification accuracy than the other methods, with 94.25% on EEG data (binary classification) and 82.19% on EOG data (triple classification). Additionally, the proposed algorithm exhibits low computational cost, good training stability, and robustness against insufficient training. Snakebite poses a significant health threat in numerous tropical and subtropical nations, with around 5.4 million cases reported annually, which results in 1.8-2.7 million instances of envenomation, underscoring its critical impact on public health. The 'BIG FOUR' group comprises the primary committers responsible for most snake bites in India. Effective management of snakebite victims is essential for prognosis, emphasizing the need for preventive measures to limit snakebite-related deaths. The proposed initiative seeks to develop a transfer learning-based image classification algorithm using DenseNet to identify venomous and non-venomous snakes automatically. The study comprehensively evaluates the image classification results, employing accuracy, F1-score, Recall, and Precision metrics. DenseNet emerges as a potent tool for multiclass snake image classification, achieving a notable accuracy rate of 86%. The proposed algorithm intends to be incorporated into an AI-based snake-trapping device with artificial prey made with tungsten wire and vibration motors to mimic heat and vibration signatures, enhancing its appeal to snakes. The proposed algorithm in this research holds promise as a primary tool for preventing snake bites globally, offering a path toward automated snake capture without human intervention. Thyroid cancer incidences endure to increase even though a large number of inspection tools have been developed recently. Since there is no standard and certain procedure to follow for the thyroid cancer diagnoses, clinicians require conducting various tests. This scrutiny process yields multi-dimensional big data and lack of a common approach leads to randomly distributed missing (sparse) data, which are both formidable challenges for the machine learning algorithms. This paper aims to develop an accurate and computationally efficient deep learning algorithm to diagnose the thyroid cancer. In this respect, randomly distributed missing data stemmed singularity in learning problems is treated and dimensionality reduction with inner and target similarity approaches are developed to select the most informative input datasets. In addition, size reduction with the hierarchical clustering algorithm is performed to eliminate the considerably similar data samples. Four machine learning algorithms are trained and also tested with the unseen data to validate their generalization and robustness abilities. The results yield 100% training and 83% testing preciseness for the unseen data. The identification research of hydrogenation catalyst information has always been one of the most important businesses in the chemical industry. In order to aid researchers in efficiently screening high-performance catalyst carriers and tackle the pressing challenge at hand, it is imperative to find a solution for the intelligent recognition of hydrogenation catalyst images. To address the issue of low recognition accuracy caused by adhesion and stacking of hydrogenation catalysts, An image recognition algorithm of hydrogenation catalyst based on FPNC Net was proposed in this paper. In the present study, Resnet50 backbone network was used to extract the features, and spatially-separable convolution kernel was used to extract the multi-scale features of catalyst fringe. In addition, to effectively segment the adhesive regions of stripes, FPN (Feature Pyramid Network) is added to the backbone network for deep and shallow feature fusion. Introducing an attention module to adaptively adjust weights can effectively highlight the target features of the catalyst. The experimental results showed that the FPNC Net model achieved an accuracy of 94.2% and an AP value improvement of 19.37% compared to the original CenterNet model. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous interventions have numerous advantages over traditional techniques. Accurate needle placement in the target anatomy is crucial for successful intervention, and reliable visual information is essential to achieve this. However, previous studies have revealed several challenges, such as the variability in needle echogenicity and the common misalignment of the ultrasound beam and the needle. Advanced techniques have been developed to optimize needle visualization, including hardware-based and image-processing-based methods. This paper proposes a novel strategy of integrating ultrasound-based deep learning approaches into an optical navigation system to enhance needle visualization and improve tip positioning accuracy. Both the tracking and detection algorithms are optimized utilizing optical tracking information. The information is introduced into the tracking network to define the search patch update strategy and form a trajectory reference to correct tracking results. In the detection network, the original image is processed according to the needle insertion position and current position given by the optical localization system to locate a coarse region, and the depth-score criterion is adopted to optimize detection results. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves promising tip tracking and detection performance with tip localization errors of 1.11 ± 0.59 mm and 1.17 ± 0.70 mm, respectively. Moreover, we establish a paired dataset consisting of ultrasound images and their corresponding spatial tip coordinates acquired from the optical tracking system and conduct real puncture experiments to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Our approach significantly improves needle visualization and provides physicians with visual guidance for posture adjustment.

In computer-aided medical diagnosis, obtaining labeled medical image data is expensive, while there is a high demand for model interpretability. However, most deep learning models currently require a large amount of data and lack interpretability. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel data augmentation method for medical image segmentation. The uniqueness and advantages of this method lie in the utilization of gradient-weighted class activation mapping to extract data efficient features, which are then fused with the original image. Subsequently, a new channel weight feature extractor is constructed to learn the weights between different channels. This approach achieves non-destructive data augmentation effects, enhancing the model's performance, data efficiency, and interpretability. Applying the method of this paper to the Hyper-Kvasir dataset, the intersection over union (IoU) and Dice of the U-net were improved, respectively; and on the ISIC-Archive dataset, the IoU and Dice of the DeepLabV3+ were also improved respectively. Furthermore, even when the training data is reduced to 70 %, the proposed method can still achieve performance that is 95 % of that achieved with the entire dataset, indicating its good data efficiency. Moreover, the data-efficient features used in the method have interpretable information built-in, which enhances the interpretability of the model. The method has excellent universality, is plug-and-play, applicable to various segmentation methods, and does not require modification of the network structure, thus it is easy to integrate into existing medical image segmentation method, enhancing the convenience of future research and applications.

Glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that can result in irreversible vision loss if not treated in its early stages. The cup-to-disc ratio is a key criterion for glaucoma screening and diagnosis, and it is determined by dividing the area of the optic cup (OC) by that of the optic disc (OD) in fundus images. Consequently, the automatic and accurate segmentation of the OC and OD is a pivotal step in glaucoma detection. In recent years, numerous methods have resulted in great success on this task. However, most existing methods either have unsatisfactory segmentation accuracy or high time costs. In this paper, we propose a lightweight deep-learning architecture for the simultaneous segmentation of the OC and OD, where we have adopted fuzzy learning and a multi-layer perceptron to simplify the learning complexity and improve segmentation accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method as compared to most state-of-the-art approaches in terms of both training time and segmentation accuracy.

Objectives: To assess the recall of a deep learning (DL) method to automatically detect kidney stones composition from digital photographs of stones., Materials and Methods: A total of 63 human kidney stones of varied compositions were obtained from a stone laboratory including calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM), uric acid (UA), magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (MAPH/struvite), calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate (CHPD/brushite), and cystine stones. At least two images of the stones, both surface and inner core, were captured on a digital camera for all stones. A deep convolutional neural network (CNN), ResNet-101 (ResNet, Microsoft), was applied as a multi-class classification model, to each image. This model was assessed using leave-one-out cross-validation with the primary outcome being network prediction recall., Results: The composition prediction recall for each composition was as follows: UA 94% (n = 17), COM 90% (n = 21), MAPH/struvite 86% (n = 7), cystine 75% (n = 4), CHPD/brushite 71% (n = 14). The overall weighted recall of the CNNs composition analysis was 85% for the entire cohort. Specificity and precision for each stone type were as follows: UA (97.83%, 94.12%), COM (97.62%, 95%), struvite (91.84%, 71.43%), cystine (98.31%, 75%), and brushite (96.43%, 75%)., Conclusion: Deep CNNs can be used to identify kidney stone composition from digital photographs with good recall. Future work is needed to see if DL can be used for detecting stone composition during digital endoscopy. Relevance and penetration of machine learning in clinical practice is a recent phenomenon with multiple applications being currently under development. Deep learning-and especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs)-is a subset of machine learning, which has recently entered the field of thoracic imaging. The structure of neural networks, organized in multiple layers, allows them to address complex tasks. For several clinical situations, CNNs have demonstrated superior performance as compared with classical machine learning algorithms and in some cases achieved comparable or better performance than clinical experts. Chest radiography, a high-volume procedure, is a natural application domain because of the large amount of stored images and reports facilitating the training of deep learning algorithms. Several algorithms for automated reporting have been developed. The training of deep learning algorithm CT images is more complex due to the dimension, variability, and complexity of the 3D signal. The role of these methods is likely to increase in clinical practice as a complement of the radiologist's expertise. The objective of this review is to provide definitions for understanding the methods and their potential applications for thoracic imaging. The olfactory system enables humans to smell different odors, which are closely related to emotions. The high temporal resolution and non-invasiveness of Electroencephalogram (EEG) make it suitable to objectively study human preferences for odors. Effectively learning the temporal dynamics and spatial information from EEG is crucial for detecting odor-induced emotional valence. In this paper, we propose a deep learning architecture called Temporal Attention with Spatial Autoencoder Network (TASA) for predicting odor-induced emotions using EEG. TASA consists of a filter-bank layer, a spatial encoder, a time segmentation layer, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) module, a multi-head self-attention (MSA) layer, and a fully connected layer. We improve upon the previous work by utilizing a two-phase learning framework, using the autoencoder module to learn the spatial information among electrodes by reconstructing the given input with a latent representation in the spatial dimension, which aims to minimize information loss compared to spatial filtering with CNN. The second improvement is inspired by the continuous nature of the olfactory process; we propose to use LSTM-MSA in TASA to capture its temporal dynamics by learning the intercorrelation among the time segments of the EEG. TASA is evaluated on an existing olfactory EEG dataset and compared with several existing deep learning architectures to demonstrate its effectiveness in predicting olfactory-triggered emotional responses. Interpretability analyses with DeepLIFT also suggest that TASA learns spatial-spectral features that are relevant to olfactory-induced emotion recognition.

Sleep staging serves as a fundamental assessment for sleep quality measurement and sleep disorder diagnosis. Although current deep learning approaches have successfully integrated multimodal sleep signals, enhancing the accuracy of automatic sleep staging, certain challenges remain, as follows: 1) optimizing the utilization of multi-modal information complementarity, 2) effectively extracting both long- and short-range temporal features of sleep information, and 3) addressing the class imbalance problem in sleep data. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-stream encode-decoder network, named TSEDSleepNet, which is inspired by the depth sensitive attention and automatic multi-modal fusion (DSA2F) framework. In TSEDSleepNet, a two-stream encoder is used to extract the multiscale features of electrooculogram (EOG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. And a self-attention mechanism is utilized to fuse the multiscale features, generating multi-modal saliency features. Subsequently, the coarser-scale construction module (CSCM) is adopted to extract and construct multi-resolution features from the multiscale features and the salient features. Thereafter, a Transformer module is applied to capture both long- and short-range temporal features from the multi-resolution features. Finally, the long- and short-range temporal features are restored with low-layer details and mapped to the predicted classification results. Additionally, the Lovász loss function is applied to alleviate the class imbalance problem in sleep datasets. Our proposed method was tested on the Sleep-EDF-39 and Sleep-EDF-153 datasets, and it achieved classification accuracies of 88.9% and 85.2% and Macro-F1 scores of 84.8% and 79.7%, respectively, thus outperforming conventional traditional baseline models. These results highlight the efficacy of the proposed method in fusing multi-modal information. This method has potential for application as an adjunct tool for diagnosing sleep disorders.

Deep artificial neural networks (DNNs) have moved to the forefront of medical image analysis due to their success in classification, segmentation, and detection challenges. A principal challenge in large-scale deployment of DNNs in neuroimage analysis is the potential for shifts in signal-to-noise ratio, contrast, resolution, and presence of artifacts from site to site due to variances in scanners and acquisition protocols. DNNs are famously susceptible to these distribution shifts in computer vision. Currently, there are no benchmarking platforms or frameworks to assess the robustness of new and existing models to specific distribution shifts in MRI, and accessible multi-site benchmarking datasets are still scarce or task-specific. To address these limitations, we propose ROOD-MRI: a novel platform for benchmarking the Robustness of DNNs to Out-Of-Distribution (OOD) data, corruptions, and artifacts in MRI. This flexible platform provides modules for generating benchmarking datasets using transforms that model distribution shifts in MRI, implementations of newly derived benchmarking metrics for image segmentation, and examples for using the methodology with new models and tasks. We apply our methodology to hippocampus, ventricle, and white matter hyperintensity segmentation in several large studies, providing the hippocampus dataset as a publicly available benchmark. By evaluating modern DNNs on these datasets, we demonstrate that they are highly susceptible to distribution shifts and corruptions in MRI. We show that while data augmentation strategies can substantially improve robustness to OOD data for anatomical segmentation tasks, modern DNNs using augmentation still lack robustness in more challenging lesion-based segmentation tasks. We finally benchmark U-Nets and vision transformers, finding robustness susceptibility to particular classes of transforms across architectures. This paper presents methods of decomposition of musculoskeletal structures from radiographs into multiple individual muscle and bone structures. While existing solutions require dual-energy scan for the training dataset and are mainly applied to structures with high-intensity contrast, such as bones, we focused on multiple superimposed muscles with subtle contrast in addition to bones. The decomposition problem is formulated as an image translation problem between (1) a real X-ray image and (2) multiple digitally reconstructed radiographs, each of which contains a single muscle or bone structure, and solved using unpaired training based on the CycleGAN framework. The training dataset was created via automatic computed tomography (CT) segmentation of muscle/bone regions and virtually projecting them with geometric parameters similar to the real X-ray images. Two additional features were incorporated into the CycleGAN framework to achieve a high-resolution and accurate decomposition: hierarchical learning and reconstruction loss with the gradient correlation similarity metric. Furthermore, we introduced a new diagnostic metric for muscle asymmetry directly measured from a plain X-ray image to validate the proposed method. Our simulation and real-image experiments using real X-ray and CT images of 475 patients with hip diseases suggested that each additional feature significantly enhanced the decomposition accuracy. The experiments also evaluated the accuracy of muscle volume ratio measurement, which suggested a potential application to muscle asymmetry assessment from an X-ray image for diagnostic and therapeutic assistance. Scientific reproducibility that effectively leverages existing study data is critical to the advancement of research in many disciplines including neuroscience, which uses imaging and electrophysiology modalities as primary endpoints or key dependency in studies. We are developing an integrated search platform called NeuroBridge to enable researchers to search for relevant study datasets that can be used to test a hypothesis or replicate a published finding without having to perform a difficult search from scratch, including contacting individual study authors and locating the site to download the data. In this paper, we describe the development of a metadata ontology based on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) PROV specifications to create a corpus of semantically annotated published papers. This annotated corpus was used in a deep learning model to support automated identification of candidate datasets related to neurocognitive assessment of subjects with drug abuse or schizophrenia using neuroimaging. We built on our previous work in the Provenance for Clinical and Health Research (ProvCaRe) project to model metadata information in the NeuroBridge ontology and used this ontology to annotate 51 articles using a Web-based tool called Inception. The Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) neural network model, which was trained using the annotated corpus, is used to classify and rank papers relevant to five research hypotheses and the results were evaluated independently by three users for accuracy and recall. Our combined use of the NeuroBridge ontology together with the deep learning model outperforms the existing PubMed Central (PMC) search engine and manifests considerable trainability and transparency compared with typical free-text search. It is more than a decade since machine learning and especially its leading subtype deep learning have become one of the most interesting topics in almost all areas of science and industry. In numerous contexts, at least one of the applications of deep learning is utilized or is going to be utilized. Using deep learning for image classification is now very popular and widely used in various use cases. Many types of research in medical sciences have been focused on the advantages of deep learning for image classification problems. Some recent researches show more than 90% accuracy for breast tissue classification which is a breakthrough. A huge number of computations in deep neural networks are considered a big challenge both from software and hardware point of view. From the architectural perspective, this big amount of computing operations will result in high power consumption and computation runtime. This led to the emersion of deep learning accelerators which are designed mainly for improving performance and energy efficiency. Data reuse and localization are two great opportunities for achieving energy-efficient computations with lower runtime. Data flows are mainly designed based on these important parameters. In this paper, DLA-H and BJS, a deep learning accelerator, and its data flow for histopathologic image classification are proposed. Machine learning (ML), a form of artificial intelligence (AI), is being increasingly employed in neurology. Reported performance metrics often match or exceed the efficiency of average clinicians. The neurologist is easily baffled by the underlying concepts and terminologies associated with ML studies. The superlative performance metrics of ML algorithms often hide the opaque nature of its inner workings. Questions regarding ML model's interpretability and reproducibility of its results in real-world scenarios, need emphasis. Given an abundance of time and information, the expert clinician should be able to deliver comparable predictions to ML models, a useful benchmark while evaluating its performance. Predictive performance metrics of ML models should not be confused with causal inference between its input and output. ML and clinical gestalt should compete in a randomized controlled trial before they can complement each other for screening, triaging, providing second opinions and modifying treatment. The classification of deformable protein shapes, based solely on their macromolecular surfaces, is a challenging problem in protein-protein interaction prediction and protein design. Shape classification is made difficult by the fact that proteins are dynamic, flexible entities with high geometrical complexity. In this paper, we introduce a novel description for such deformable shapes. This description is based on the bifractional Fokker-Planck and Dirac-Kähler equations. These equations analyse and probe protein shapes in terms of a scalar, vectorial and non-commuting quaternionic field, allowing for a more comprehensive description of the protein shapes. An underlying non-Markovian Lévy random walk establishes geometrical relationships between distant regions while recalling previous analyses. Classification is performed with a multiobjective deep hierarchical pyramidal neural network, thus performing a multilevel analysis of the description. Our approach is applied to the SHREC'19 dataset for deformable protein shapes classification and to the SHREC'16 dataset for deformable partial shapes classification, demonstrating the effectiveness and generality of our approach.

Pretrained deep models hold their learnt knowledge in the form of model parameters. These parameters act as "memory" for the trained models and help them generalize well on unseen data. However, in absence of training data, the utility of a trained model is merely limited to either inference or better initialization towards a target task. In this paper, we go further and extract synthetic data by leveraging the learnt model parameters. We dub them Data Impressions, which act as proxy to the training data and can be used to realize a variety of tasks. These are useful in scenarios where only the pretrained models are available and the training data is not shared (e.g., due to privacy or sensitivity concerns). We show the applicability of data impressions in solving several computer vision tasks such as unsupervised domain adaptation, continual learning as well as knowledge distillation. We also study the adversarial robustness of lightweight models trained via knowledge distillation using these data impressions. Further, we demonstrate the efficacy of data impressions in generating data-free Universal Adversarial Perturbations (UAPs) with better fooling rates. Extensive experiments performed on benchmark datasets demonstrate competitive performance achieved using data impressions in absence of original training data.

Bias field is one of the main artifacts that degrade the quality of magnetic resonance images. It introduces intensity inhomogeneity and affects image analysis such as segmentation. In this work, we proposed a deep learning approach to jointly estimate bias field and reconstruct uniform image. By modeling the quality degradation process as the product of a spatially varying field and a uniform image, the network was trained on 800 images with true bias fields from 12 healthy subjects. A network structure of bias field estimation and uniform image reconstruction was designed to compensate for the intensity loss. To further evaluate the benefit of bias field correction, a quantitative analysis was made on image segmentation. Experimental results show that the proposed BFCNet improves the image uniformity by 8.3% and 10.1%, the segmentation accuracy by 4.1% and 6.8% on white and grey matter in T2-weighted brain images. Medical image recognition plays an essential role in the forecasting and early identification of serious diseases in the field of identification. Medical pictures are essential to a patient's health record since they may be used to control, manage, and treat illnesses. On the other hand, image categorization is a difficult problem in diagnostics. This paper provides an enhanced classifier based on the outstanding Feature Selection oriented Clinical Classifier using the Deep Learning (DL) model, which incorporates preprocessing, extraction of features, and classifying. The paper aims to develop an optimum feature extraction model for successful medical imaging categorization. The proposed methodology is based on feature extraction with the pretrained EfficientNetB0 model. The optimum features enhanced the classifier performance and raised the precision, recall, F1 score, accuracy, and detection of medical pictures to improve the effectiveness of the DL classifier. The paper aims to develop an optimum feature extraction model for successful medical imaging categorization. Gait is a unique biometric feature that can be recognized at a distance; thus, it has broad applications in crime prevention, forensic identification, and social security. To portray a gait, existing gait recognition methods utilize either a gait template which makes it difficult to preserve temporal information, or a gait sequence that maintains unnecessary sequential constraints and thus loses the flexibility of gait recognition. In this paper, we present a novel perspective that utilizes gait as a deep set, which means that a set of gait frames are integrated by a global-local fused deep network inspired by the way our left- and right-hemisphere processes information to learn information that can be used in identification. Based on this deep set perspective, our method is immune to frame permutations, and can naturally integrate frames from different videos that have been acquired under different scenarios, such as diverse viewing angles, different clothes, or different item-carrying conditions. Experiments show that under normal walking conditions, our single-model method achieves an average rank-1 accuracy of 96.1 percent on the CASIA-B gait dataset and an accuracy of 87.9 percent on the OU-MVLP gait dataset. Under various complex scenarios, our model also exhibits a high level of robustness. It achieves accuracies of 90.8 and 70.3 percent on CASIA-B under bag-carrying and coat-wearing walking conditions respectively, significantly outperforming the best existing methods. Moreover, the proposed method maintains a satisfactory accuracy even when only small numbers of frames are available in the test samples; for example, it achieves 85.0 percent on CASIA-B even when using only 7 frames. Grating interferometry is a promising technique to obtain differential phase contrast images with illumination source of low intrinsic transverse coherence. However, retrieving the phase contrast image from the differential phase contrast image is difficult due to the accumulated noise and artifacts from the differential phase contrast image (DPCI) reconstruction. In this paper, we implemented a deep learning-based phase retrieval method to suppress these artifacts. Conventional deep learning based denoising requires noise/clean image pair, but it is not feasible to obtain sufficient number of clean images for grating interferometry. In this paper, we apply a recently developed neural network called Noise2Noise (N2N) that uses noise/noise image pairs for training. We obtained many DPCIs through combination of phase stepping images, and these were used as input/target pairs for N2N training. The application of the N2N network to simulated and measured DPCI showed that the phase contrast images were retrieved with strongly suppressed phase retrieval artifacts. Background: This paper describes the development of a predicted electronic portal imaging device (EPID) transmission image (TI) using Monte Carlo (MC) and deep learning (DL). The measured and predicted TI were compared for two-dimensional in vivo radiotherapy treatment verification., Methods: The plan CT was pre-processed and combined with solid water and then imported into PRIMO. The MC method was used to calculate the dose distribution of the combined CT. The U-net neural network-based deep learning model was trained to predict EPID TI based on the dose distribution of solid water calculated by PRIMO. The predicted TI was compared with the measured TI for two-dimensional in vivo treatment verification., Results: The EPID TI of 1500 IMRT fields were acquired, among which 1200, 150, and 150 fields were used as the training set, the validation set, and the test set, respectively. A comparison of the predicted and measured TI was carried out using global gamma analyses of 3%/3 mm and 2%/2 mm (5% threshold) to validate the model's accuracy. The gamma pass rates were greater than 96.7% and 92.3%, and the mean gamma values were 0.21 and 0.32, respectively., Conclusions: Our method facilitates the modelling process more easily and increases the calculation accuracy when using the MC algorithm to simulate the EPID response, and has potential to be used for in vivo treatment verification in the clinic., (© 2022. Academic research is crucial to the development of science and technology and is an important factor that affects national strength. When writing an academic research paper, a rhetorical structure is typically used to present the paper's ideas, but this task is quite difficult for junior researchers. To solve this problem, some studies have adopted text mining to assist with the writing, but the existing methods still require human intervention to generate sentences. Recently, due to the increasing maturity of deep learning technology and the ability to address the problem of automatic text generation, progress has been made in this area. The highly complex deep learning operations can correctly generate sequences and find correlations between sequences. When a user provides a few keywords and key sentences, the proposed algorithm can generate an introduction section for the user. The results show that the generated introduction is more coherent, clearer, and more fluent than existing summarization methods. In addition, the method proposed in this study improves the accuracy compared with traditional text extraction methods. The manuscript produced by this study has been evaluated to show that the study can produce a comprehensive introduction compared with previous studies. • The proposed framework can generate a comprehensive introduction based on users' brief inputs. • This paper demonstrates a three-testing-threshold approach to check the content quality. • The introduction generated through this method has less than 3% similarity to the original text by comparison. Since 2000, there have been more than 8000 publications on radiology artificial intelligence (AI). AI breakthroughs allow complex tasks to be automated and even performed beyond human capabilities. However, the lack of details on the methods and algorithm code undercuts its scientific value. Many science subfields have recently faced a reproducibility crisis, eroding trust in processes and results, and influencing the rise in retractions of scientific papers. For the same reasons, conducting research in deep learning (DL) also requires reproducibility. Although several valuable manuscript checklists for AI in medical imaging exist, they are not focused specifically on reproducibility. In this study, we conducted a systematic review of recently published papers in the field of DL to evaluate if the description of their methodology could allow the reproducibility of their findings. We focused on the Journal of Digital Imaging (JDI), a specialized journal that publishes papers on AI and medical imaging. We used the keyword "Deep Learning" and collected the articles published between January 2020 and January 2022. We screened all the articles and included the ones which reported the development of a DL tool in medical imaging. We extracted the reported details about the dataset, data handling steps, data splitting, model details, and performance metrics of each included article. We found 148 articles. Eighty were included after screening for articles that reported developing a DL model for medical image analysis. Five studies have made their code publicly available, and 35 studies have utilized publicly available datasets. We provided figures to show the ratio and absolute count of reported items from included studies. According to our cross-sectional study, in JDI publications on DL in medical imaging, authors infrequently report the key elements of their study to make it reproducible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
