Long-term overgrazing may lead to the degradation of grasslands which are often characterized by an increase in nonpreferred species, especially toxic plants. However, the impact of these toxic nonpreferred species on the restoration processes of degraded grasslands is not well understood, particularly their interactions with soil properties and other plant functional groups. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted an in situ grazing exclusion experiment in a temperate degraded grassland of Inner Mongolia, China. The objective of this study was to investigate how toxic nonpreferred plants influence the recovery of plant diversity and productivity in degraded grasslands and whether these effects can be explained by changes in soil properties. Our findings revealed that Stellera chamaejasme, a toxic nonpreferred species widely distributed in North China, directly altered plant community composition and improved species diversity in degraded grasslands dominated by Asteraceae plants. The presence of S. chamaejasme could inhibit Asteraceae abundance and increase soil copper content in this study area, because Asteraceae plants have a high copper accumulation capacity. Within the communities with S. chamaejasme, the alleviation of soil copper limitation to plants may subsequently enhance the abundance and aboveground productivity of Poaceae and Forbs. Our study demonstrated that the strong direct and indirect interactions of toxic nonpreferred species with other ecosystem components promoted competitive release in terms of biomass accumulation and species diversity. The change of soil limiting microelements content caused by toxic species exerts an important mediation function during the recovery process of degraded grasslands. Hypersaline lakes and saltern areas are important industrial and biodiversity resources in the Qaidam Basin of China that reside at > 2600 m asl. Most hypersaline environments in this area are characterized by saturated salinity (~ 300 g/L salinity), nearly neutral pH, intense ultraviolet radiation, and extremely variable temperature fluctuations. The core bacterial communities associated with these stressful environments have nevertheless remained uninvestigated. 16S rRNA gene Illumina sequencing analyses revealed that the bacterial communities were dominated by core lineages including the Proteobacteria (39.4-64.6%) and the Firmicutes (17.0-42.7%). However, the relative abundances of common lineages, and especially the five most abundant taxa of Pseudomonas, Lactococcus, Anoxybacillus, Acinetobacter, and Brevundimonas, were highly variable across communities and closely associated with hypersaline characteristics in the samples. Network analysis revealed the presence of co-occurrence high relative abundance taxa (cluster I) that were highly correlated across all hypersaline samples. Additionally, temperature, total organic carbon, K + , and Mg 2+ correlated highest with taxonomic distributions across communities. These results highlight the potential mechanisms that could underlie survival and adaptation to these extreme hypersaline ecosystems.

There is no doubt that the diversity and stability of freshwater ecosystems have suffered dramatic changes as a result of intensified human activities. However, the relationship between community diversity and stability is still debated. In this study, we used biological and geochemical records from the recent sediments of two lakes to test the hypothesis that different aspects of the diversity of the chironomid community have different relationships with community stability. Yangzong Lake (YZ) and Chenghai Lake (CH) are large and deep alpine lakes in SW China. We conducted a multi-proxy study of the sedimentary records spanning the last 200 years from the two lakes. Our focus was on subfossil chironomid remains, but analyses of chemical elements, total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) were also conducted. The principal results are as follows: 1) Both nutrient and chironomid assemblages underwent a critical transition in 1990 at YZ and in 1998 at CH. 2) The response of species richness varied between the two lakes, but the trends of their respective β diversity indices are consistent, despite the fact that the contributors to β diversity are different. 3) The stability of the chironomid communities has decreased in both lakes since the mid-20th century. 4) The relationship between diversity and stability varies in relation to the type of diversity. Lake biodiversity is an incomplete indicator of exogenous forcing insofar as it ignores underlying deformations of community structure. Here, we seek a proxy for deformation in a network of diatom assemblages comprising 452 species in 273 lakes across China. We test predictions from network theory that nodes of similar type will tend to self‐organize in an unstressed system to a positively skewed frequency distribution of nodal degree. The empirical data reveal shifts in the frequency distributions of species associations across regions, from positive skew in lakes in west China with a history of low human impacts, to predominantly negative skew amongst lakes in highly disturbed regions in east China. Skew values relate strongly to nutrient loading from agricultural activity and urbanization, as measured by total phosphorus in lake water. Reconstructions through time show that positive skew reduces with temporal intensification of human impacts in the lake and surrounding catchments, and rises as lakes recover from disturbance. Our study illustrates how network parameters can track the loss of aquatic assemblage structure in lakes associated with human pressures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anthropogenic eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems has had significant negative effects on biodiversity and human wellbeing. Improving our understanding of the ways in which biological communities respond to eutrophication underlies biodiversity conservation, and diversity metrics like species richness and evenness are often used to assess environmental impacts on biodiversity. However, such studies mainly consider overall gain and loss, ignoring species replacement in community succession. This paper combines paleolimnology and network science to propose a heterogeneity index (H) to measure community successions by linking long-term changes in community structure with environmental stress. Eight lakes of different types in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin (MLYB) were selected, and we focused on diatom communities to reconstruct their ecological trajectories after significant anthropogenic impact. The combined results suggested that human impacts have caused eutrophication in each lake since the 1950s, but led to different degrees of impact on the diatom communities. In hypereutrophic lakes, diatom assemblages shifted to high-nutrient tolerance and the proportions of epiphytic-benthic species decreased, while in mildly eutrophic lakes, a switch to mild-nutrient tolerant assemblages occurred in planktonic and epiphytic-benthic species with no change in epiphytic-benthic proportions. The H of diatom communities declined in hypereutrophic lakes, but changed little in mildly eutrophic lakes after the 1950s. Meanwhile, no regular changes in diversity indicators such as richness, evenness and the Jaccard-index occurred with lake eutrophication. The ordered species turnover in nutrient-enriched diatom communities may account for the discrepancies in H and the above indices, such as ordered epiphytic-benthic species being replaced by higher nutrient-tolerant and planktonic species with no necessarily attendant reduction in species richness. By quantifying the alteration of species associations without being influenced by species diversity, the H index effectively reveals the succession of diatom communities, and can therefore serve as a complementary indicator of biodiversity.
