The Well Mitan-1 has achieved a major breakthrough in the exploration of Ordovician subsalt natural gas in the mid-eastern Ordos Basin, demonstrating a high-yield industrial gas flow in fourth member of the Majiagou Formation of Ordovician (O1m4). Despite this success, there are ongoing disputes regarding the origin of the natural gas found in Well Mitan-1. Measured results show that the natural gas in Well Mitan-1 is mainly composed of alkane gas (95.18 %). The gas drying coefficient (C1/C1-5) is measured at 0.947, and the H2S content is 3.49 %, with a small amount of N2 and CO2 in the non-hydrocarbon gas. The carbon isotopic compositions of methane, ethane, and propane in the natural gas are -45.5‰, -26.4‰, and -24.3‰, respectively. Based on the regional geological background, the characteristics of potential source rocks and the geochemical characteristics of natural gas, it is considered that the natural gas in Well Mitan-1 is self-generated and self-accumulated oilassociated gas in Ordovician subsalt carbonate rocks. However, certain geochemical anomalies, such as the lighter methane carbon isotope value (d13C1) and coal-type gas characteristics in ethane carbon isotope (d13C2), raise questions. Further insights from thermal simulation experiments on hydrocarbon generation and the analysis of residual gas in rocks suggest a close relationship between the special geochemical characteristics of Well Mitan-1 and the presence of gypsum rocks. The ubiquitous gypsum rock serves a dual purpose: acting as an effective caprock, facilitating the retention of early-generated natural gas, and promoting the generation of heavy hydrocarbon gases (C2+) and H2S. The relatively low H2S content (less than 5 %) and higher C2+ content indicate that thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR), if present, is not strong enough to significantly impact methane. The Middle Permian Maokou Formation in the Sichuan Basin has huge resources and is an important target for natural gas exploration. In recent years, significant exploration breakthroughs have been made in the dolomite field of member Mao-2 in central Sichuan, and the gas production of several wells has exceeded 1 × 106 m3/d, indicating promising prospects for exploration. However, the origin of the dolomite reservoir in member Mao-2 remains ambiguous, which restricts the accurate prediction of favorable reservoirs. This study focuses on drilling in the Hechuan area as its research object, by using a detailed description of the cores from member Mao-2 of seven wells; samples were selected for tests of the degree of dolomite cation ordering, stable carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions, strontium isotopic composition, rare earth elements, LA-ICP-MS element mapping and U-Pb dating. It is clarified that: (1) The crystalline dolomite of member Mao-2 in the Hechuan area is the main reservoir rock, and the heterogeneous vugs and fractures are the main reservoir space. The dolomite in member Mao-2 has been characterized by a low degree of cation ordering value (avg. 0.59), with values of δ13C (avg. 3.87‰), δ18O (avg. −7.15‰) and 87Sr/86Sr (avg. 0.707474) having similar geochemical characteristics to Middle Permian seawater; the REEs normalized distribution patterns have similar characteristics to limestone; and the U-Pb age (261.0~262.0 Ma) corresponds to the age in the Capitanian stage of the Permian Guadalupian Series. (2) Petrological studies show that member Mao-2 has vertical karstification zonation characteristics; syngenetic karstification controls the formation of a large-scale fracture-cave system in the phreatic zone; the dolomitization of sediment in the fracture-cave system occurred during the penecontemporaneous period with locally restricted seawater. (3) The main controlling factors of the reservoir were syngenetic karstification, early dolomitization and hydrothermal dissolution related to Emei taphrogenesis. The research results are of great significance for dolomite reservoir prediction; the highlands of paleogeomorphology with syndepositional faults are favorable areas for dolomite reservoirs. This study analyzes the geochemical characteristics of natural gas composition, carbon isotope, and light hydrocarbon in the eastern belt around the Penyijingxi sag of the Junggar Basin. The result shows the that natural gas content is dominated by alkane gas, with low contents of heavy hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon components. The overall carbon isotopic composition of the alkanes shows a trend as δ13methane (C1) < δ13ethane (C2) < δ13propane (C3) < δ13butane (C4), and all δ13C1 values are <−30‰, which are typical of gases of organic origin. The natural gas is mainly coal-derived gas from the Lower Urho formation, mixed with a small amount of oil-associated gas from the Fengcheng formation. The vertical migration of natural gas resulted in the mixing of oil-associated gas and coal-derived gas and the mixing of alkane gas at different stages of the same origin, which should be the origin of carbon isotope inversion. The diffusion migration of carboniferous oil and gas reservoirs has led to differences in gas geochemical characteristics among gas wells. These migration characteristics of natural gas may indicate that the shallow layers are a favorable stratum for the next step of oil and gas exploration in the eastern belt around the Penyijingxi sag. To understand hydrocarbon migration in terms of the mechanisms, accumulations and exploration targets, it is essential to correctly identify and characterize the carrier systems that control fluid-migration history and oil/gas reservoir formation. The Yinggehai Basin in China is an important area for natural gas exploration and production. However, due to the argillaceous sand sedimentary environment and the absence of faults from the Neogene thermal subsidence period, traditional migration pathways are absent in the Yinggehai Basin, posing significant challenges to target evaluation in this area. Exploration shows that most of the existing gas reservoirs are associated with vertical migration. In this work, coherence cube and curvature seismic techniques are used in the central diapir zone of the Yinggehai Basin to identify diapir-associated fractures and regional stress. Together with geological analysis, two categories of carrier system are discussed in detail to explain the complex migration and accumulation patterns that have puzzled the area. Diapirs have five evolutionary phases, i.e., pressurization, piercing, equilibrium, release and collapse, which have different fracture development patterns, leading to different mechanisms of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation. The carbon isotopes of gaseous hydrocarbons in DF shallow layers and mid-deep layers have an inverted order distribution, indicating mixed accumulation with different maturity, whereas in the mid-deep layers of the diapir-affected areas, there is a single accumulation with low maturity. Early diapiric activity allowed the natural gas produced from deep source rocks to migrate upward along the diapiric carrier system and accumulate in suitable traps to form gas reservoirs. For regional-stress related fractures, the gradual loss of overpressure and fluids from deep to shallow in high-pressure fractures results in the gas accumulation time of deep traps in the regional stress-related carrier system being relatively late and the gas accumulation time of shallow traps being relatively early. Reconstructing paleoenvironments has long been considered a vital component for understanding the development and evolution of carbonate reservoirs. The Middle Ordovician Period is considered the archetypical greenhouse interval, and also a critical period in biological evolution. The Middle Darriwilian isotope carbon excursion has been observed in many areas of the world and may be related to the biological explosions caused by decreases in the temperature. The thick carbonate rocks in the fifth member of the Middle Ordovician Majiagou Formation in the Dingbei area of the Ordos Basin were chosen as an example, based on the concentration of major, trace and rare earth elements as well as C, O and Sr isotopic analyses, the paleoenvironment was reconstructed. And its impact on natural gas exploration was analyzed. The results show that the seawater paleotemperature was 29 °C, suboxicanoxic paleoredox conditions were observed, and the seawater paleosalinity was high. A large number of plankton in the biological explosion caused a rapid increase in the total organic carbon in carbonate rocks, which provided natural gas as supplemental source rocks. Affected by early meteoric water, the dissolution of gypsum laid the foundation for high-quality reservoirs, and the residual gypsum also further preserved natural gas. The Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin is one of the most important shale gas producing formations in China. Previous studies of shale gas were mostly carried out on based on laboratory analyses and did not provide effective guidelines for shale gas exploration. In this paper, we present a large amount of carbon isotopic data from mud gas isotope logging and rock-cutting headspace gas in wellsites. The δ13C 1 values showed a significant decrease at the bottom of the Longmaxi Formation. The δ13C 1 and δ13C 2 values in the Changning area were observed to be heavier than those in the Weiyuan and Jiaoshiba areas. The second half of the N216H27-3 horizontal well had obvious outgassing and carbon isotope fractionation effects. This indicates that the bottom of the Longmaxi Formation has better shale gas exploration potential. The shale gas of the Longmaxi Formation in the Changning area belongs to late kerogen cracking gas, where exploration prospects are poorer than those in the Weiyuan and Jiaoshiba areas. There were more oil cracking gas resources and better reservoir conditions at the end of the N216H27-3 horizontal well; therefore, drilling should be continued at this site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The upper Permian Longtan Formation (LTF) shale is a new shale gas exploration and development focus in China, which was formed in a transitional depositional environment. Because of the difference in the sedimentary environment between marine-continental transitional shale and marine shale, the enrichment characteristics and mechanism of organic matter (OM) are very different. Because of a weak research foundation, the enrichment mechanism of OM in the LTF shale in the Sichuan Basin is still unclear. In this paper, shale samples of the upper Permian LTF from the Well F5 were collected, and the abundance, source and sedimentary environment of organic matter were studied by using paleoclimate, detrital input, redox, paleoproductivity and sedimentation rate parameters. The results show that the TOC content of the LTF shale is high (average = 3.04%) and reaches the high to overmature stage (average = 2.46%), indicating a favorable source rock. The LTF shale was deposited in a humid and hot climate, which was conducive to the growth and prosperity of a large number of plants. The source of organic matter was mainly terrestrial plant fragments. The sedimentary environment of the LTF shale was oxic, it had a high sedimentation rate, which reduced the oxidation rate of OM, promoted the rapid deposition of OM, and ensured the preservation of organic matter. In summary, the enrichment of OM of LTF shale in the Sichuan Basin was affected by the sedimentary environment, which was complicated. The Northwestern Sichuan Basin is a hot spot for natural gas exploration, and in recent years, many wells have obtained high-yield commercial gas flows in the Qixia Formation. However, due to the influence of foreland orogeny, the oil and gas in the Qixia Formation often have the characteristics of multisource filling, multistage accumulation and multistage transformation, which results in an unclear understanding of the gas source and the accumulation process. This paper uses the concept of sub-block research through carbon isotope and biomarkers analyses, to carry out gas-gas, gas-source and bitumen-source rock comparisons in different structural belts to determine the natural gas sources. On this basis, basin simulation and fluid inclusion analysis technology are used to determine the stage of hydrocarbon accumulation, and then the accumulation process is determined. Studies have shown that the gas source of the Qixia Formation are different in the different structural belts: (1) The natural gas from the Qixia Formation in the thrust nappe belt mainly originates from the Qiongzhusi Formation source rock; (2) The natural gas from the Qixia Formation in the hidden fault belt is a mixture of the source rock of the Qixia Formation and the source rock of the Qiongzhusi Formation; and (3) The natural gas from the Qixia Formation in the gentle belt mainly originates from the Middle Permian source rock and the Upper Permian Longtan Formation source rock. The Indosinian, Yanshania, and Himalayan movements all have great influence on the formation of the Qixia Formation reservoir in northwestern Sichuan, and the accumulation process of the different structural belts is quite different, but generally, the accumulation process of the different structural belts have experienced three stages: a primary oil pool stage, gas pool stage and reformation and definition stage. • Through sub-block research, gas source of the foreland thrust belt is studied. • Different gas sources cause differences in carbon isotopes. • Accumulation process of each structural belt is distinct. • The results have implications for exploration in complex tectonic areas. The Lower Paleozoic Ordovician Wufeng Formation and the Silurian Longmaxi Formation shale in the southeastern part of Sichuan Basin in China are the key strata for shale gas exploration. In this paper, based on a large number of outcrops, cores and natural gamma spectroscopy logs combined with scanning electron microscopy, geochemical parameter testing and mineral component analysis, the geological conditions and exploration potential of shale gas accumulation were studied in this area, and the relationship between structure and shale gas preservation is discussed. The vertical reduction in the U/Th ratio measured in the outcrop sandstone lenses and core horizontal bedding and observed in the energy spectrum logs indicates that the sedimentary water body transformed from a low-energy anoxic reducing environment to a high-energy oxidizing environment. The TI index and the kerogen carbon isotope indicate that the organic matter type of the shale is mainly type I kerogen. The TOC content of high-quality shale is generally above 2.50%, and the R o value is between 2.00% and 3.08%. High organic matter abundance, moderate thermal evolution and a large thickness of high-quality shale ensure an adequate supply of hydrocarbon resources. Multiple types of inorganic pores, primary organic pores and pores formed during hydrocarbon generation provide abundant reservoir space for the enrichment of shale gas. The tectonics have an important influence on the preservation of shale gas. Moderate fracture development, a late tectonic uplift time, small-scale tectonic uplift, and high formation pressure coefficient are conducive to the preservation of shale gas, and the gas content and productivity will be higher. The Furongian Series of the Cambrian in the Tarim Craton (NW China) is mainly composed of crystalline dolostones, and is an important target for oil and gas exploration. The chronostratigraphic framework of the Furongian Series in the Tarim Craton has not yet been established due to the scarcity of fossils and the absence of the Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE), which is the primary global carbon isotope excursion of the Furongian Series. In this study, the SPICE was discovered by examining the carbon isotopes of the representative drilling wells in the West Platform and East Basin. A positive carbon isotope anomaly with δ13C values ranging from 1.5‰ to 1.9‰ (PDB), were found in the middle of the Xiaqiulitag Formation of the three drilling wells in the West Platform, and a positive excursion with δ13C values up to 4.0‰ (PDB), which is correlated with the SPICE, was found in the lower limestone of the Tuershaketag Formation in the East Basin. Based on the carbon isotopic data and chemostratigraphic correlation, the chronostratigraphic framework of the Furongian Series across different facies in the Tarim Craton is preliminarily established. The basal boundary of the Furongian Series was preliminarily defined by the occurrence of the SPICE. A weak positive anomaly of δ13C was observed at the base of the Penglaiba Formation of the three boreholes in the West Platform and the top of the Tuershaketag Formation of Tadong-2 well. We propose that the positive anomaly of the carbon isotope above the weak negative anomaly at the base of the Penglaiba Formation and the top of the Tuershaketag Formation can be used to define the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary in the Tarim Craton. Marine shale gas exploration in southern China has successes and failures. Under the condition of great hydrocarbon generation material basis, shale gas wells drilled from some shale gas blocks are rich in methane, while the wells in other shale gas blocks with high nitrogen and low hydrocarbon gas, which indicates that they have different accumulation mechanisms. Therefore, the study of gas composition in shale will help us to figure out the mechanism of shale gas accumulation and loss. In this paper, the Lower Cambrian shale from Wei-201 well in Upper Yangtze Weiyuan Block and Jiangye-1 well from Lower Yangtze Xiuwu Basin are selected as research object, and shale samples are used for tests and experiments including analysis of gas composition and nitrogen isotope, test of porosity and TOC content, overburden permeability test, permeability test before and after methane adsorption under different osmotic pressure, permeability test parallel and vertical to the bedding surface, FIB-SEM (Focus Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscope) and FIB-HIM (Focused Ion Beam Helium Ion Microscope). Finally, the reasons for the difference in the gas components of the Lower Cambrian shale gas in Weiyuan Block and Xiuwu Basin are studied by means of seismic interpretation, core description and outcrop observation besides the tests and experiments. The results show that the gas components of the Lower Cambrian shale in Weiyuan Block, the Upper Yangtze, mainly consist of methane, derived from liquid hydrocarbon cracking. The sealing capacity of roof and floor, the great self-sealing of shale and the flat anticline structure contribute to the high methane content in shale gas. The Lower Cambrian shale gas in Xiuwu Basin, the Lower Yangtze, is mostly nitrogen, which is derived both from atmosphere and deep crust-upper mantle. The detachment layer at the bottom of the Lower Cambrian, the widely developed deep faults and the Jurassic volcanic activity are the reasons for the high nitrogen and low hydrocarbon of shale gas. Based on the above analysis, the patterns are summarized for shale gas accumulation in the simple anticline background and reservoir destruction in the complex syncline background.
