The high economic return from sales of palm oil is because of its inclusion in a vast range of commodities, and Malaysia is the second largest producer after Indonesia. However, increasing cultivation of oil palm has a negative environmental impact threatening sustainability. Basal stem rot (BSR) by Ganoderma boninense is of major concern to sustainability of the palm oil industry. CLIMEX, a computer model, provided suitability‐for‐future‐growth maps of oil palm in Malaysia. The present study used this model to determine how climate affects oil palm growth, providing quantitative scenarios of future oil palm mortality and BSR incidence in Malaysia under a 'no change' presumption. Unsuitable climate for oil palm will make the plant susceptible to disease. High and low levels of oil palm mortality and BSR incidence were predicted from the CLIMEX model in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, respectively, by 2100. Sabah represented the most sustainable region in Malaysia for palm oil production followed by Sarawak. Overall, climate change will not affect the incidence of BSR greatly until 2050 but the situation will deteriorate thereafter. These scenarios can be monitored for accuracy in the future. Methods to ameliorate climate change effects on oil palm and concomitantly reducing BSR incidence are required. Palm oil production may be unsustainable after 2050, and urgent action must be taken. As nations scramble to reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, and corporations do the same for their own reasons, voluntary carbon markets flourish and demand for nature-based carbon credits outpaces supplies. Global attention is on countries with substantial potential to generate certifiable forest-based carbon credits. Despite nearly 30-years of experience with carbon offset projects, forest-based climate change mitigation projects of questionable quality still proliferate in Malaysia and elsewhere. Here, we assess the feasibility and sustainability of the Nature Conservation Agreement (NCA) - a recent project that includes two million hectares of protected forest in the Malaysian state of Sabah. We use this seriously flawed example to identify five key issues that forest carbon projects should not ignore: transparency, additionality, social equity, sovereignty, and complementarity. This paper reviews quantitative biostratigraphic data from 101 petroleum exploration wells from the Malay, Sarawak and Sabah basins, and places the stratigraphy of each area into a precise chronostratigraphic framework comprising 41 transgressive-regressive depositional packages which are fully defined here. Each package is 'fingerprinted' by foraminiferal, nannofossil and palynological index fossils, and then tied to the global pattern of glacio-eustatic sea level and climate changes based on the global δ18O and δ13C datasets used to calibrate the geological timescale. The result is a tightly constrained chronostratigraphic framework that is applicable from deep to shallow water and is of high accuracy. It is concluded that there is a sedimentation 'pulsebeat' across Southeast Asia, independent of local and regional tectonics, driven by patterns of global climate change. For the Oligocene and Miocene, Antarctic glaciation is the key driver, whereas the Pliocene cycles are mainly driven by the expansion and contraction of Northern Hemisphere glaciers. The new chronostratigraphic framework allows unconformities across Malaysia to be better characterised, and the different classification schemes of seismic "Groups" in Malay and Penyu basins, "Cycles" in offshore Sarawak and "Stages" in offshore western Sabah to be correlated. Also, with a clear understanding of the effect of fluctuating sea levels on the stratigraphy of the region, it is easier to make firm judgments regarding the effect of tectonics. The study also characterises systems tracts from shelf to basin floor using biostatigraphic assemblages, which should help in ground-truthing the architecture of depositional sequences in the region based on seismic. The new framework is proposed as an alternative to the outdated TB scheme of Haq et al. (1988) , widely used to interpret depositional cycles across Sarawak and Sabah.
