The 4th International Conference on Radiation Effects of Electronic Devices (ICREED) was held on May 26–29, 2021, in Xi’an, China. The conference was held in-person and well attended. In addition, several virtual presentations were given by authors who were unable to attend due to the ongoing worldwide pandemic. Ten papers presented at ICREED are included in the May 2022 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science (TNS). Many of these papers highlight active research on radiation effects on microelectronics in China. Additional papers based on work presented at ICREED may appear in other issues of the Transactions. In July 2019, the Hague Conference on Private International Law adopted the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil or Commercial Matters. As an outcome of the Judgments Project, this Convention will exert a great influence on the global circulation of foreign judgments. China attached great importance to the Judgments Project and participated in the full negotiation process. This paper is a reflection of some of the Chinese negotiators' approaches in handling certain very difficult but important issues in the process, with the hope that it may shed some light on China's negotiation practice and the principles it adheres to in the international law arena, which are fully in line with the principles of equity and justice, mutual benefit, and win-win outcome. The article offers information on the Satellite Symposium of the 20th International Conference on Condensed Matter Nuclear Science held at the Xiamen University in Xiamen, China. Topics discussed include sposors of the symposium Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials (iCHEM) and State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces, keynote presentation delivered by professor Peter Hagelstein, and reports given on gas discharge experiments.

A given political communication practice is firmly related to the structure it locates in. This paper concerns such communication in the Chinese context, with a focus on the case of the Chinese Premier's Press Conference (CPPC). Informed by sociological institutionalism, it divides the CPPC's evolution into three stages – habitualization, objectification, and sedimentation, each of which has different characteristics of structural evolution due to different historical and cultural conditions. It argues that the structure of the CPPC has evolved to a ‘semi-institutionalized’ one, involving both formal and informal components. The informal components within this structure lead to negotiations among different decision-makers on the information that is delivered at the CPPC and to the public. It reveals the nature of Chinese political structure today, that is, wherein every decision-making undergoes a bargaining process within the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the Fourth U.S.-Sino Forum with the theme Managing Chronic Illness Across the Globe held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 4-6, 2017. The papers presented focused on nursing care of non-communicable diseases, with the author speaking on Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) which has potential in China. The forum allowed exchange of ideas, research opportunities, and global collaboration and included a dinner cruise and a visit to the Phipps Conservatory.

This paper explores the Shanghai 2010 World Expo to show how spectacle serves a governing function of the Chinese developmental state. I introduce soil exegesis as a method to excavate sedimented power relations of spectacle, undergirding the expo’s presentation. This approach investigates how spectacle is a state-territorializing project and pedagogical venture that relies on and denies the state socialist-era’s waste, to produce a ‘new nature’ and perform socio-technical management of crisis and crowds. Dynamic rearrangement of soil quality and composition facilitated the urban redevelopment zone of sustainable futures, while interactive-technocratic environments inserted visitor bodies into expo surveillance systems and infrastructure without reference to the embedded political ecology of the mass event within Shanghai and beyond. The article concludes by considering ethical legacies of the event and the ways ‘sustainable spectacle’ operates through waste administration and environmental performance that ‘greenwash’ the socialist past and obstruct other governing arrangements. This fifth annual edition of MycoNews starts with an editorial on the critical importance of International Mycological Congresses (IMCs) to the health of mycology. Items on Counting down to IMC12, the State of the World's Plants and Fungi 2023, and progress towards Improving nomenclatural stability in medically important fungi follow. Reports are provided of several mycological meetings in 2023: the Asian Mycological Congress, XIX Congress of European Mycologists, a meeting of European Mycological Groups and Societies, the XI Latin American Mycological Congress, Westerdijk Spring Symposium on Fungal Evolution, the Brazilian Society of Mycology, the Annual Meeting of the Mycological Society of China, and the Fifth Iranian Mycological Congress. Information is provided on how to make nominations for the various IMA Awards due to be presented at IMC12 in August, the new Future is Fungi Award launched in 2023, and the Adel-Azeem and Stamets Award for work on Psilocybe in Africa. The Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute Awards for 2023 were made to Andrey Yurkov and Cathie Aime and the citations to those awards are provided. We include tributes to the passing of two eminent mycologists, Lorelei Norvell and Takashi Matsushima, and also send birthday greetings to Bryce Kendrick who turned 90, and Maria Ławrynowicz, Yu Li, and Anthony Whalley who all became octogenarians. Implementation and funding mechanisms to reverse biodiversity loss formed the core of the discussion focusing on the Post‐2020 Global Biodiversity Framework ("the Framework"), at the 15th Conference of Parties at the Convention on Biological Diversity hosted by China. Before financial support emerged from the private sector in China, biodiversity conservation had primarily been financed by the government. By the end of the 20th‐century international nongovernmental organizations and China's local philanthropists began to launch pilot programs in the country. In the past 5 years, biodiversity conservation across China has received CNY 1.757 billion (approximately $279 million) from the philanthropy sector. It represents the largest‐ and fastest‐growing share (69%) of environmental philanthropic funding; however, it accounted for <1% of all the philanthropic in all sectors nationwide. We suggested Foundations and NGOs review and adjust their strategies to align with the Kunming‐Montreal global biodiversity framework. Proactive connection and engagement with the philanthropies is required to expand its contributions while providing better pathways and support mechanisms for philanthropic funding for biodiversity conservation. Despite the philanthropic funding provided has been relatively modest over the past few decades, the philanthropic organizations have achieved significant positive results for biodiversity conservation in China. However, the funding for biodiversity conservation falls far short of what is needed to achieve the goals under the Kunming‐Montreal global biodiversity framework. This study provides a comprehensive overview of biodiversity philanthropic funding in China. Based on the collection of data related to environmentally relevant grants provided by companies, foundations, and individuals, we conducted a visualization analysis to reveal China's philanthropic funding flows between 2016 and 2020 in China. This Survey covers materials reflecting Chinese practice in 2019 relating to: treaties, agreements and other documents signed or ratified by the People's Republic of China; national legislation; statements made by Chinese representatives at the meetings of the UN and other international organizations, international conferences, and those made by the Foreign Ministry spokespersons, with respect to various branches of international law; and judicial decisions, in particular on the applicability and application of international conventions, by Chinese courts. The Second Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Conference was held in Beijing, China, on the 7th to 9th of June, 2014. This event gathered a diverse international combination of researchers, policy makers, practitioners, funders and disaster risk reduction agencies, to discuss the applied integration of disaster risk research. The current special issue consists of papers with an explicitly social focus which were presented at this conference. These papers are discussed in terms of vital elements for integrated disaster risk science, namely: analysis, theory and links to practice. The special issue papers include a landmark case study of community-led disaster recovery, amongst indigenous Māori affected by the earthquakes of 2011 and 2012 in Canterbury, New Zealand. Another paper takes an international approach, to analysing the use of the term 'disaster' in English speaking contexts. A paper on vulnerability and response to disasters provides a detailed account of needs for disaster risk reduction in low-income countries, such as Ghana. Vulnerabilities are also explored in a paper about the challenges faced by people with disabilities during an earthquake. The special issue concludes with a thought-provoking paper on concepts of modernity, which takes an expansive and historical view of the disaster risk domain. In sum, special issue authors have produced relatively unique combinations of disaster risk analysis, theory and links to practice. In 1995, the global feminist movement launched a dramatic protest against the Chinese government's attempt to move the NGO Forum for the Beijing Women's Conference to the remote location of Huairou. The first international feminist protest to rely on digital technology, this unprecedented mass action by women throughout the world exposed both the promise and the pitfalls of using faxes, email, and the internet to rally a social movement around a common cause. Over the course of the protest, the same technology that linked feminists across national boundaries and enabled them to conduct an effective campaign had the potential to exacerbate power differentials between them. INTRODUCTION Implementing comprehensive smoke-free laws is an important part of tobacco control and has been promoted since China ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in 2005. This study shows the predictors of adopting subnational smoke-free laws and their alignment with Article 8 of WHO FCTC. METHODS The legislations of 125 cities from China's top three city grades were assessed, covering the cities that have smoke-free laws. Logistic regression is applied to evaluate the characteristics of cities that adopted a smoke-free law. We also compare each smoke-free law with the WHO FCTC Article 8 requirements. RESULTS Provincial capital cities were more likely to adopt smoke-free laws compared with other cities. Smoke-free laws vary from comprehensive to partial bans with major exemptions. Among the 21 cities that have enacted smoke-free laws, 9 cities prohibited smoking in all indoor workplaces, indoor public places (restaurants, bars, health facilities, government buildings and schools) and public transportation. More than half of the smoke-free laws still allow designated indoor smoking rooms. Smoke-free laws that clearly ban e-cigarettes in smoke-free areas have been implemented in only two cities (Nanning and Hangzhou). CONCLUSIONS This study shows that a number of Chinese cities have taken legislative measures to protect people from exposure to tobacco smoke. It identifies signs of progress but also areas for improvement, such as the scope of smoke-free laws, imperfect implementation of such laws, and the potential omission of e-cigarettes from the legislation. Parapsychology is on the forefront of scientific research, but certainly draws much debate around the academic world. But we cannot accept the blind denial of so-called skeptics. In China, parapsychology is the study of mainly special people and their special functions. In this article, we present findings from recent Chinese research in parapsychology. We report on the psi potential of blind children and the alleged paranormal abilities of Yang De-Gui, Chen Qui-Shi, and others. We also discuss some key findings presented at three parapsychology conferences at Kunming, China, that suggest psi experimentation can be carried out using scientific instruments. Though the functions of these special people vary with age, most appear stable and repeatable. Chinese parapsychology can be viewed in context with China’s rich traditional culture. Earnings communication conferences in China have become the main platform for direct communication between listed firms and individual investors. This study investigates whether hosting an earnings communication conference and its tone affect post‐earnings‐announcement drift (PEAD). We find that hosting an earnings communication conference increases PEAD. One possible explanation for our results is that investors overreact to the stock prices of firms that hold earnings communication conferences. We also conclude that the conference tone is negatively correlated with PEAD. In addition, the market reacts more strongly to the managers' tone than it does to the investor's tone. As the profession of dance movement therapy (DMT) grows and develops, more DMT's are combining movement with counselling and psychology, making valuable contributions across the globe. The sudden threat of Covid-19 made the need for clarification and integration of cultural and professional boundaries clear. With a shrinking world and increasing threats of refugees, displacement, climate change, intergenerational trauma and pandemics, DMT's can join with other healing disciplines to bring creative healing options into communities and the world. This article examines the case of the Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) to consider under what conditions unions can provide effective workplace representation in China. The authors draw on semi-structured interviews to analyze how and why the union was effective, despite rigid prohibitions against organizing outside of the Party-led All-China Federation of Trade Unions. The authors argue that the YICT union developed a system of annual collective bargaining that tamed the power of militant dockworkers and helped prevent strikes. This outcome required an effective enterprise-level trade union that was nevertheless able to influence and manage members' somewhat ambiguous acceptance of its role. Ultimately, workers' interests were partially represented and their acquisition of associational power--in the form of trade unions--increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 14th IEEE International Conference on Communication Systems (ICCS 2014) was successfully held in Macau, China, from 19?21 November 2014. It was co-organized by the IEEE Communications Society Singapore Chapter, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Singapore Chapter, and the IEEE Singapore Section, and technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society and the IEEE Macau Section. CASE is an offspring of TASE and is the flagship automation conference of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, constituting the primary forum for cross-industry and multidisciplinary research in automation. Context: Industry influence on health science and policy is a critical issue of our day. In 2015 the New York Times revealed that Coca-Cola paid scientists to form a Global Energy Balance Network promoting the notion that exercise, not dietary restraint, is the solution to the obesity epidemic-a claim few accept. This article examines the organizational dynamics and policy process behind Coke's efforts to sway obesity policy-globally and in China. a critical market-during 1995-2015. Methods: In-depth, qualitative research during 2013-18 involved 10 weeks of fieldwork in Beijing, interviews with 25 leading experts, analysis of newsletters documenting all major obesityrelated activities in China, interviews with 10 Euro-American experts. and extensive internet research on all major actors. Findings: This article tells two intertwined stories (institutional dynamics, science making and policy making) at global and local-Chinese levels. Coke succeeded in redirecting China's obesity science and policy to emphasize physical activity. Key to its success was the industry-funded global nonprofit International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI). Beneath ILSI's public narrative of unbiased science and no policy advocacy lay a maze of hidden channels companies used to advance their interests. Working through those channels, Coca-Cola influenced China's science making and policy making during every phase in the policy process, from framing the issues to drafting official policy. Conclusions: Though China is exceptional, ILSI promoted exercise globally, suggesting potentially significant impacts in other ILSI-branch countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
