This study examines the flow of the ternary nanofluid over a rotating stretchable cylinder with a torsional motion under the influence of a Cattaneo–Christov heat flux. In order to accomplish the goals of this simulation, a ternary hybrid nanofluid (THNF) that is based on water and incorporates nanoparticles with three distinct morphologies is considered. For assessing the colloidal mixture of spherical, cylindrical, and platelet shaped nanoparticles, the necessary models are used. By using appropriate similarity transformations, the modeled equations are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). These ODEs are then solved using the finite element approach. The numerical integration's validity and reliability, as well as the newly obtained results, were thoroughly analyzed. Results reveal that the larger values of Reynolds number enhance the system's inertial force, which resists the liquid accelerating force and declines both velocities and heat transport. The rise in values of volume fractions and Reynolds number declines the skin friction coefficients along swirling and radial directions. This study focused on using swirling flow as a method to stabilize the detonation behavior and shorten the deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) distance of pulse detonation engines; additionaly, the study investigates the effect of swirling flow on flame propagation behavior and DDT distance. A swirling flow in which the circumferential velocity in the radial direction gradually increased from the center toward the wall and decreased near the wall was confirmed. Laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) confirmed that the swirl number is smaller in the axial velocity distribution when the number of swirling injector couplings is small. The DDT shortening ratio obtained using ten swirling injector couplings is larger than that obtained using five couplings. The impact of the swirl number on the flow field of a single-stage swirl combustor is investigated using the particle image velocimetry technology. The variations in recirculation zone size, pulsating region, turbulent distribution, vorticity, and Reynolds stress within the combustor are summarized through quantitative analysis of the flow field. Experimental results indicate the following: (1) Under the same air mass flow rate, the length of the recirculation zone in the combustion state is shorter than that in the cold state. (2) The length of the recirculation zone and the axial vortex spacing display a decreasing trend as the swirl number increases, while the width of the recirculation zone demonstrates an increasing trend. (3) For the single-stage swirl combustor, the primary pulsating region is at the swirling jet area at the exit of the swirl. As the swirl number increases, the standard deviation of radial velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy also increase. (4) The strong shear region of the single-stage swirl combustor can be divided into inner and outer shear layers based on the vorticity distribution and the Q criterion. The vortices in the inner and outer shear layers exhibit opposite orientations according to the vorticity distribution. In response to the prevalent issue of sand presence in liquid, particularly prominent in petroleum engineering, a novel cyclone separator has been meticulously engineered for fine-particle separation. Experiments and numerical simulation methods have provided a profound understanding of the flow-field characteristics and separation efficacy of this device. The internal architecture of the swirling flow inside the separator features a distinctive central vortex core, complemented by a turbulent secondary vortex formation in the lower section of the underflow. As the axial height increases, the secondary vortex gradually dissipates. An analysis of pressure and velocity distribution within the cyclone separator confirms the establishment of a stable cyclone field in the built-in cyclone and a tendency for the flow field within the tank to exhibit uniformity with increasing height. These flow-field characteristics show that the cyclone separator has a good separation effect on fine-rust particle impurities. Furthermore, the separation efficiency of the novel cyclone separator demonstrates a positive correlation with increasing particle size. Of the parameters studied, variation of the inlet velocity is the best method for obtaining optimum separation efficiency for a cyclone desander with a fixed particle size. Experimental research was conducted on an annular air jet. The active flow control was introduced by means of tangentially arranged synthetic jets. Flow visualization and measurements of the flow velocity and stagnation pressure on an impingement wall were performed. Tests were carried out with Reynolds numbers ranging from 4000 to 10,000 (evaluated from the outer exit diameter of the annular nozzle). Bistability and hysteretic effects were revealed, because two alternative flow field patterns (A and B) were identified under the same boundary conditions. In the A pattern, a small recirculation area (bubble) of separated flow was attached to the nozzle centerbody. In the B pattern, a large recirculation area of separated flow bridged the entire nozzle-to-wall distance. The effect of the Reynolds number was evaluated: the hysteresis and bistability were not observed for Re ≥ 9000. Swirl has been employed as a mechanism for enhancing the spreading rate of jets, especially in the multiphase context of liquid droplets suspended in a gaseous jet. This work examines the effect of the swirl phenomenon on the downstream development of turbulent round jet sprays using Euler–Lagrange simulations. Two simulation sets are performed: The first set consists of single-phase simulations, and the second set consists of two-phase large eddy simulations where the droplets are stochastically added to the computational domain using an injection model. The simulations consider five different non-dimensional swirl strengths from 0.0 to 2.0 at a Reynolds number of 50,000. As simulation results, we obtain the total normalized number flux of droplets and for each droplet size bin along with the mean and standard deviation of the droplet velocity distributions. Using the SST k-ω turbulence model, a comprehensive numerical investigation was conducted to analyze the flow and heat transfer characteristics of steam within an isosceles trapezoidal cooling channel with pin-fin arrays modeled from the trailing edge of a F-class gas turbine high-temperature blade. The influence laws of various parameters, including the Reynolds number (Re, from 10,000 to 50,000), dimensionless pin-fin diameter (d/H, from 0.4 to 0.8), and dimensionless pin-fin spacing (S/H, from 1.6 to 2.4), on the flow and heat transfer performance of the isosceles trapezoidal cooling channel with pin-fin arrays were examined. Sensitivity analysis was employed to determine the relative significance of these influence parameters on the cooling performance of the isosceles trapezoidal channel with pin-fin arrays. Finally, the corresponding heat transfer and friction correlations within the investigated parameter range were developed. The research findings reveal that under different Reynolds numbers, as the dimensionless pin-fin diameter increases from 0.4 to 0.8, the friction factor within the isosceles trapezoidal cooling channel with pin-fin arrays increases by a factor of 3.25 to 3.41, while the overall average Nusselt number improves by 31.05% to 37.41%. Conversely, when the dimensionless pin-fin spacing increases from 1.6 to 2.4, the friction factor within the isosceles trapezoidal cooling channel with pin-fin arrays decreases by 67.38% to 69.18%, accompanied by a reduction in the overall average Nusselt number by 24.95% to 31.14%. When both the flow performance and heat transfer performance are taken into account, the importance of the influence parameters ranks as follows: Reynolds number, pin-fin diameter, and pin-fin spacing. It also suggests that smaller pin-fin diameters and larger pin-fin spacing should be selected in the design stage based on the variation laws of integrated thermal-hydraulic performance. The results may provide valuable references and insights for the design of steam cooling structures within high-temperature turbine blade trailing edge channels in advanced gas turbines. Porous baffles can be used to enhance heat transfer in various engineering applications, including electronic cooling, gas turbine blades, and chemical reactors. Also, the backward-facing step is a widely used configuration in fluid dynamics studies due to its simplicity and relevance to real-world geometries. This study examines heat transfer and flow characteristics in a backward-facing step channel featuring a heated bottom wall and two porous baffles. A computational fluid dynamics model, validated against prior research, is used to investigate flow and temperature fields. The innovation of this work lies in the application of multi-objective optimisation to search for a set of solutions that establish a trade-off between the average Nusselt number and the pressure drop. The optimisation specifically considers various parameters of the porous baffles, including height, width, distance from the step, and Darcy number, to identify optimal design configurations. Results show that porous baffles significantly improve heat transfer compared to a backward-facing step channel without them, despite an increase in pressure drop due to their presence. This work offers valuable insights into the trade-off between heat transfer performance and pressure drop, crucial for designing efficient heat transfer systems. By exploring the Pareto-Frontier, which represents various optimal design solutions, the study provides practical guidance when seeking to optimise heat transfer in backward-facing step channels with porous baffles. In the present study, a multi-nozzle hydrogen burner based on the micromix combustion principle (MCP) and designed to operate under atmospheric pressure and without preheated air was investigated both numerically and experimentally. Previous investigations regarding this type of burner have shown low NO x emissions and no risk of flashback, which are the two main issues when burning pure hydrogen. Numerical models were calculated based on a CFD code, and the burner performance was assessed under various operating conditions, including thermal powers between 5 and 25 kW and excess air ratio between 1.3 and 2. The importance of turbulence-chemistry interaction modelling and differential diffusion effects, particularly for highly diffusive flames such as hydrogen, has been widely addressed. All numerical results were validated with experimental results from a laboratory-scale burner using thermocouple measurements, including the corresponding radiative corrections. An infrared camera was used to detect and study the flame shape under various operating conditions. The turn-down of the multi-nozzle hydrogen burner was extensively analysed, focusing on the penetration depth or, equivalently, the momentum flux ratio as a highly sensitive design parameter. Low Reynolds number flames were also considered, demonstrating a collapse of the MPC under these conditions. These conclusions emphasize the relevance of this parameter in determining the optimal operating conditions and guiding the redesign process. Although spray technology is widely used, research on spray flow is limited by the complexity of its flow field. To simplify the spray simulation, this work proposed an orifice section velocity fitting method, which can simplify the calculation of the flow field inside the nozzle by using a set of special velocity fitting equations as boundary conditions. For the application and verification of the method, the characteristics of methyl nonafluorobutyl ether (HFE7100) flash spray under temperature influence were experimentally studied in this paper using phase Doppler particle analyzer equipment and compared the results of simulation and experiment. The comparison results show that the simulation and experimental results of the spray axial velocity distribution have good consistency at different temperatures. The simulation results show that the swirling flow in the orifice is stronger when the temperature is lower than the boiling point and the spray velocity isosurface is conical. The swirling flow in the nozzle is attenuated by flash evaporation when the temperature increases above the boiling point, while the spray velocity isosurface changes to a bell shape. The experimental results show that the spray velocity increases with increasing evaporation caused by increasing temperature and that the spray axial velocity distribution also changes from a saddle shape to a single peak shape. The spray droplet size increased significantly under the influence of flash evaporation, but the spatial distribution maintained a saddle shape. The necessity of minimizing NOx emissions drives the pursuit of ultra-lean premixed combustion in aeroengines and gas turbines, characterized by susceptibility to combustion instabilities. To tackle this issue, swirling flow design is widely incorporated into lean premixed combustor design, enhancing flame stability, and shortening flame length. This study utilizes the tomographic background-oriented Schlieren (TBOS) to reconstruct the spatial distribution of the refractive index gradient of lean premixed turbulent swirl flames with an aeroengine combustor configuration. A parametric study of the TBOS reconstruction quality is conducted, and the results reveal that view sparseness primarily degrades the reconstruction quality compared to the specific iterative algorithm used. The classic visual hull approach is explored to address this challenge, highlighting the significance of visual hull size. Furthermore, to improve the reconstruction quality, a posterior support constraint method is proposed, involving the removal of voxels of nearly constant refractive index within the central volume surrounded by flames. Results demonstrate that implementing this posterior support constraint further improves the reconstruction quality of lean premixed turbulent swirl flames. Finally, the robustness of this posterior support constraint method is validated by introducing high-level noise to the light deflection data, showcasing the potential of combining the dedicated designed visual hull and proposed posterior support constraint in addressing the view sparseness challenge for TBOS measurements. Detached eddy simulation has become a widely used method in eddy simulations due to its balance between cost and accuracy. The recently developed subgrid dissipation concept (SDC) combustion model [Liu et al., "On the subgrid dissipation concept for large eddy simulation of turbulent combustion," Combust. Flame 258, 113099 (2023)] is found to be more reasonable and accurate than the conventional eddy dissipation concept model in large eddy simulation (LES). In this paper, the SDC model is adapted to the ℓ 2 -ω adaptive detached eddy simulation framework, named DES-SDC. The required key quantities, including the fine structure mass fraction and dissipation rate, are appropriately blended across Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes and LES regions. The DES-SDC approach is validated using premixed bluff body stabilized flame, non-premixed swirl flame, and premixed swirl flame with complex geometry. It is much more tolerant to coarse mesh resolution than pure LES, yet it preserves the capability of resolving the key unsteady feature critical for the combustion process, as it is designed to be. The DES-SDC approach is relatively insensitive to the grid resolution. The spray downstream of swirl cups involves complex two-phase flow. Comprehensively, understanding the flow physics of the spray to accurately predict the characteristics of the swirl spray is crucial for developing next-generation low-emission gas turbine combustors. The Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of the spray is an important design parameter in a gas turbine combustor, and the semi-theoretical method is among the most widely used approaches for predicting the SMD of atomizers. Of the available semi-theoretical models for predicting the SMD of prefilming-type atomizers, Shin's phenomenological three-step atomization (PTSA) model is a physics-based correlation. The PTSA model comprises three submodels: those of the pressure-swirl spray, impingement and film formation, and aerodynamic breakup. Based on similar physical mechanisms, the PTSA model can effectively predict the SMD for the spray shear layer of swirl cups. In this study, a new model, called the PTSA-V model, is proposed by introducing the viscosity of the liquid to the three submodels of PTSA. Additionally, the submodel of impingement and film formation was reconstructed, using a simplified model of a round water jet impinging on a cylindrical wall to predict the thickness of the liquid film on the Venturi surface. Experiments were carried out on a swirl cup under different pressures and temperatures of fuel as well as varying pressure drops in the air by using a two-component phase Doppler particle analyzer. The resulting uncertainty in predictions of the PTSA-V model was lower than ± 7.4 % under the 26 operating conditions considered here, compared with an uncertainty of ± 20 % in the outcomes of PTSA. This work numerically and experimentally investigated the effect of the characteristic structure of nested composite fuel grains on their combustion properties. The characteristic structure comprised multiple helical grooves inside the fuel grain port, which formed during the combustion process. Three-dimensional steady-state simulations were employed to analyze the burning behavior of composite fuel grains with different scales of the characteristic structure (i.e., groove depth) of 0, 1, and 2 mm. An obvious swirl-gas flow field and large tangential velocity appeared for fuel grains with the characteristic structure, which was conductive to enhancing the propellant mixing. A larger flame region and more intense burning were correspondingly achieved, during which greater amounts of H 2 O and CO 2 were generated than by fuel grain without the characteristic structure. Numerical results verified that the characteristic structure was theoretically beneficial to improving the combustion properties of the grains. Firing experiments were conducted using a laboratory-scale hybrid rocket engine with oxygen as the oxidizer. The flame structure and pulsation features were synchronously analyzed using a radiation imaging technique. Pure paraffin-based fuel grains with a circular port were tested for comparison. Both regression rates and combustion efficiencies of the composite fuel grains with characteristic structure scales of 1 mm and 2 mm showed significant improvement. The flame images exhibited an obvious helical shape and large area, which was consistent with the numerical analysis. Determination of the geometrical parameters of the heat exchanger has important effects on the thermohydraulic performance of the heat exchanger. In this study, the effects of geometric parameters of a plate heat exchanger on thermohydraulic performance have been extensively investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Parametric studies were performed on 8 different corrugated channel geometries with various chevron angles (β) and aspect ratios (2b/λ) for Reynolds numbers ranging from 500 to 3000. An entire fluid channel was numerically studied using the same mass flow rate and the Reynolds number. As results of the study, temperature distribution, pressure gradient, velocity, turbulent kinetic energy distribution, Nusselt number, friction factor, and flow properties were evaluated comparatively for each case. It was determined that the sinusoidal corrugations promote the turbulence intensity and the swirling flow which leads to thermal boundary layer mitigation and enhanced convection heat transfer in response to the increasing of aspect ratio. The results of the study show that the (CFD) model is a reasonable and effective technique for displaying 3D contour plots, streamlines, and determining performance parameters. A computational model is developed to obtain a helicopter rotor blade's vibration characteristics and aerodynamic behavior. A mathematical model of the wake is also developed, consisting of fundamental wake geometry. A Bo 105 helicopter rotor blade is considered for computational aerodynamic analysis. A fluid–structure interaction model of the rotor blade with surrounding air is developed, where the finite element model of the blade is coupled with the computational fluid dynamics model of the surrounding air. The fluid–structure interaction model analyzes aerodynamic coefficients, velocity profiles, and pressure profiles. The resonance frequencies and mode shapes are also obtained by the computational method. A small-scale model of the rotor blade is manufactured, and experimental analysis of similar contemplation is conducted to validate the numerical results. Wind tunnel and vibration testing arrangements are used for the experimental validation of the aerodynamic and vibration characteristics, respectively. The wake and vortex analysis showed that the swirl velocity is minimum, and the axial velocity is maximum at the vortex center. The axial velocity decreases, and swirl velocity increases with increasing the distance from the vortex center to the core radius. Finally, an application of experimentally validated computational methodology for helicopter rotor blade to evaluate aerodynamic characteristics in a fluid–structure interaction environment along with the characterization of resonance properties is outlined where the results follow an expected pattern. This study investigates experimentally and numerically the stability, combustion, and emissions characteristics of premixed swirl-stabilized methane/air flames with enhanced lean blowout (ELBO) injection of hydrogen in the non-premixed mode for higher turndown ratio gas turbines. The study analyzed the effects of hydrogen fraction (HF : volumetric percentage of H 2 in the total fuel) ranging from 0 to 25% and equivalence ratio (φ) ranging from 0.5 to 0.893 on flow/flame interactions and flame stability, structure, and emissions. The introduction of non-premixed H 2 yields two conflicting outcomes, with enhancements in reaction kinetics and flame speed yet counteracted by increased hydrogen jet momentum dispersing the flame. The combustor lean blowout (LBO) limit remains relatively unaffected (φ overall ≈ 0.5) by H 2 injection. Flame temperature is primarily influenced by φ and minorly by HF. Increasing HF resulted in localized temperature rises around H 2 jets without an overall increase in flame temperature, offering a promising strategy for reduction of NOx emissions. Nevertheless, using H 2 as a pilot fuel leads to an increase in intermediate species like OH, H, and O, contributing to flame stabilization. The advection of passive scalars in time-independent two-dimensional incompressible fluid flows is an integrable Hamiltonian system. It becomes non-integrable if the corresponding stream function depends explicitly on time, allowing the possibility of chaotic advection of particles. We consider for a specific model (double gyre flow), a given number of exits through which advected particles can leak, without disturbing the flow itself. We investigate fractal escape basins in this problem and characterize fractality by computing the uncertainty exponent and basin entropy. Micropower generation and micropropulsion are two emerging fields where micro- and miniature-scale combustors are anticipated to play a significant role. Today, there is a growing interest in combustion-based direct energy conversion modules such as thermoelectric and thermophotovoltaic micropower generators. In this study, the effects of swirl addition to fuel flow and airflow on combustor operational envelope, flame blowout limit, combustion efficiency, exhaust gas temperature, mean outer wall temperature, emitter efficiency, and normalized temperature standard deviation of a miniature-scale (mesoscale) combustor are studied under various equivalence ratios. The findings demonstrate that swirling flows improve the flame blowout limit and operational envelope of the combustor; however, this improvement is more significant for airflow swirl. Besides simultaneous swirling flows of fuel and air result in the highest blowout limit. Additionally, it has been shown that swirl addition improves combustion efficiency and causes a significant amount of heat to be generated, which raises the temperature of the exhaust gas, the mean outer wall temperature, and the emitter efficiency. Furthermore, mean outer wall temperature and emitter efficiency have the highest values for simultaneous swirling flows of fuel and air. It is also observed that increasing the fuel flow swirl number generally lessens the normalized temperature standard deviation (NTSD) and consequently improves the combustor wall temperature uniformity, while for the airflow swirl case, a swirler with 30° vane angle for airstream has a lower NTSD than a 45° vane angle swirler. The integrated design of multibypass augmented/ramjet combustors can reduce the weight of turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engines and improve the thrust-to-weight ratio, but low-resistance mixing and efficient stable combustion of multiple airflows over short distances are necessary prerequisites. In this study, a novel structure for a TBCC multibypass integrated augmented/ramjet combustor is proposed. The influence of the inlet aerodynamic parameters on the flow field, mixing efficiency, flow loss, and combustion performance of the combustor under different working modes was obtained via experimental and numerical methods. The experimental results show that the outlet mixing efficiency is greater than 86% in the double-bypass mode (DB-mode). While the triple-bypass mode (TB-mode) has a larger decrease, the total pressure loss is slightly reduced (by approximately 0.5%). The opening of the ram duct has a significant impact on the flow field, resulting in different rules for the influence of the inlet temperature on the outlet mixing efficiency: in the DB-mode, the mixing efficiency decreases with increasing inlet temperature, while the rule is completely opposite after entering the TB-mode. Because the dominant role of the two mixing zones in the flow field changes with the velocity, the inlet velocity has a significant impact on the mixing efficiency in the flow direction. The combustion simulation results show that the combustion efficiency in the DB-mode is almost always above 90% and the high-temperature zone is mainly concentrated downstream of the integrated strut. This article employed numerical methods to investigate the aerodynamic, thermal, and infrared characteristics of last-stage turbine swirl on a two-dimensional convergent divergent (2D-CD) exhaust system with an afterburner under varying bypass ratios. The research results indicate that the swirl diminishes the thrust coefficient and flow coefficient of the 2D-CD exhaust system with an afterburner. At a bypass ratio of 0.2, the thrust coefficient and flow coefficient decrease by 0.65% and 1.07%, respectively. When the bypass ratio is relatively small, the swirl flow leads to a decrease in the temperature of the afterburner heat shield. Conversely, when the bypass ratio is relatively large, the opposite occurs. The maximum temperature of the heat shield increases by up to 7.2% (bypass ratio = 0.35), while the average temperature decreases by up to 7.1% (bypass ratio = 0.2). The swirl causes an increase in the temperature of the divergent section heat shield, with the most significant deterioration observed at a bypass ratio of 0.25, resulting in a maximum temperature increase in 12.2%. Swirling flow shortens the length of the jet flow, and as the bypass ratio reduces, this attenuation effect becomes more pronounced. When the bypass ratio is 0.2, the length of the core area decreases by 40.3%, and the infrared intensity of the narrow-side jet flow decreases by 12.5%. Overall, on the XOY detection plane, the maximum decrease in infrared intensity is 11.5%, and the maximum increase is 11.7%. Jets arrays have become a promising technology for industrial applications, including heat transfer and combustion processes. This paper presents the first experimental results of arrays of bidirectional swirling jets, including their flow structures and specific turbulent interactions. Particle image velocimetry of non-reacting linear arrays showed the formation of recirculation zones within each jet of the array. These regions are the most stable, with fluctuations less than 0.002 of the bulk inlet velocity Vin. In addition, jets merging locations also show a significant decrease in velocity fluctuations, with values V′/Vin < 0.005, which is most clearly seen at a smaller pitch distance. However, the highest turbulent fluctuations occur in shear layers, reaching values of V'/Vin ≈ 0.02 for linear arrays and V'/Vin ≈ 0.03 for planar configurations. The flow structure of planar arrays is more complex, leading to the formation of secondary vortex structures at locations of jet interaction. This results in a significant decrease in the flow swirl number, from an initial value of Sin = 2.1 in the vortex chamber, to S1 = 0.36–0.49 at z/dout2 = 1 and S2 = 0.19–0.27 at z/dout2 = 2 beyond the outlet nozzle. Strong cross-sectional motions are observed in planar arrangements, leading to the development of additional regions of negative axial velocity between the outlet nozzles. The boundaries of these regions have nearly zero axial velocity values and can provide reliable ignition and flame stabilization in the case of reactive bidirectional jets. The flow of viscous fluids is considered as the aggregation of the motion of fluid particles when the fluid is conceived to be made up by an infinite number of particles. As an alternative of this conventional model, fluid motion could be understood as the slip of fluid layers with a molecular scale over each other, where the slip structures of fluid and their associated small-scale motion are characterized by an axial-vector-valued differential 1-form, called the vortex field. In this paper, in the case of steady flows we define the swirling degree of the velocity field at a point, and further the swirl field of the steady flow, to study the slip topology of fluid or the local streamline pattern around the critical point. The linear velocity field in the right real Schur form is used to carry out detailed analyses around the isolated critical point. Theoretical deduction and numerical test unveil the connection between the swirling degree and the swirl field, greatly make clear the topological property of slip structures of fluid in steady flows, especially in three-dimensional space. Pressure swirl nozzles are widely applied in various heat and mass transfer applications due to advantages of reliable performance, simple structure, and easy processing. However, the complex design of the nozzle structure makes it difficult to miniaturize the pressure swirl nozzle, which restricts its use in limited spaces. In this study, a compact pressure swirl nozzle is proposed by merging a swirl chamber with the tangential inlet flow channel, addressing the issue of liquid atomization in limited spaces. The key geometric parameters are determined based on the internal flow properties by swirl chamber simulation. A spray test bench utilizing a phase Doppler particle analyzer and a high-speed camera was built to study the effect of pressure drop, geometric size, and nozzle inlet shape on spray characteristics. The simulation results show that the nozzle diameter and inlet shape are the main factors affecting flow in the swirl chamber. The experimental results further demonstrate that increasing nozzle diameter increases flow rate and spray cone angle, causing the droplets to move to the spray edge. The spray characteristics are affected by the inlet shape of the nozzle hole: radial velocity and particle size show a wider range of change with a funnel-shaped inlet. Axial velocity and pressure drop are obviously affected by a cylindrical-shaped inlet. This study provided a new design approach for pressure swirl nozzles and achieved flow rate of 5–35 l/h and Sauter mean diameter below 40 μm with an overall weight of 12 g. The swirl cup airblast fuel injector is widely used in modern low-emission gas turbine combustors. It is important to understand the underlying physics in the interaction between fuel spray and complex swirling airflow. The present study investigates a swirl cup airblast fuel injector's swirling flow and spray atomization characteristics. Various laser-based diagnostics, including planar Mie scattering, phase-Doppler particle analyzer, and high-speed particle imaging velocimetry, were employed for this purpose. The swirl cup airblast fuel injectors, featuring different outer swirler swirl numbers (0.8 < S N < 1.8) and inner–outer relative swirling directions, were investigated in an air Reynolds number ranging from 0.77 × 106 to 1.16 × 106 and a 2 kg/h constant kerosene mass flow rate. The results showed that, since the swirler relative direction showed a significant influence on the inner swirler induced central toroidal recirculation zone and outer swirler induced swirling jet zone, the interaction between spray and swirling airflow was changed. Therefore, spray angle, Sauter mean diameter, and droplet velocity were changed by the swirler relative direction. It is a new practical method to apply external magnetic field in magnetic working fluid to enhance heat transfer. In this paper, the swirl flow and heat transfer characteristics of ferrofluid in elliptical tubes under thermal-magnetic-flow fields coupling have been studied by using the finite volume method. The flow structure and secondary vortices evolution process of magnetic nanofluid in elliptical ducts under the action of the magnetic fields have been obtained. The effects of magnetic induction intensity and the ratio of major axis to minor axis of elliptical pipe on the flow and heat transfer performances have been main investigated. The results show that there is obvious secondary flow (with four vortices or eight vortices) on the cross-section and the swirling flow is gradually formed due to the coupling of thermal-magnetic-velocity fields. With the increase of the ratio of major axis to minor axis, the heat transfer enhancement effect with the application of external magnetic field is weakened. Swirling flow at vertical shaft spillways results in flow fluctuations, reduces hydraulic system efficiency, and causes structural damage. Optimizing the shape of the inlet is a practical means to decrease the swirling flow strength. In the present study a comprehensive experimental investigation was performed to examine the effects of a new type of inlet over vertical shaft spillways, namely the circular piano-key (CPK) inlet, for free, orifice and full-pipe or black water flow regimes. Head-discharge relationships, threshold and critical submergence depths and the effects of different geometrical parameters of the CPK inlets on the spillway flow discharge coefficient were assessed. Results reveal that increases in the height of the inlet and outlet keys increase the released capacity of the shaft spillway. Given its increased total crest length and the effects of the radially placed walls of a CPK against the swirling flow, angles of the inlet and outlet keys of the CPK are found to significantly affect the spillway flow discharge. The effect of inlet and outlet overhangs on the efficiency of CPK inlets is not noteworthy, being negligible. Considering the destructive effects of swirling flow, the CPK inlets significantly decrease the range of submergence for an unfavourable swirling flow regime condition, increasing the threshold submergence depth and decreasing the critical submergence depth. The flow discharge through the CPK inlets is higher than those of the other circular-type spillways. The review paper presents the various passive methods used in the heat exchanger in detail with their advantages and disadvantages over the active methods. The paper studies the experimental and numerical studies of twist tape as an insert due to its retrofit capability and easy handling advantages. The experimental studies are categorized based on the geometrical parameter of the twist tape insert. The twisted tape with similar geometries is compiled in the same section. For example, twist tape with a clockwise twist, anticlockwise twist, alternate twist, or twist tape with a twist and no twist in the same section. It is a concise form that basically illustrates the studies based on similar geometrical parameters. The study covers both experimental and numerical studies and presents the advantages of experimental and numerical studies over one another. There is a section that shows statistical analysis of the Nusselt number and friction factor for various swirl flow inserts with comparison to the plain tube. The selection of twist tape inserts for the heat exchanger depends upon the cost and feasibility at the required point of application of the heat exchanger. This is done by comparing the thermal performance factor of the insert in the heat exchanger. The thermal performance factor of a particular insert in a tubular heat exchanger must be greater than 1, to justify its capability as a good insert. This paper applies fractional calculus to a practical example in fluid mechanics, illustrating its impact beyond traditional integer order calculus. We focus on the classic problem of a rigid body rotating within a uniformly rotating container, which generates a liquid vortex from an undisturbed initial state. Our aim is to compare the time evolutions of the physical system in fractional and integer order models by examining the torque transmission from the rotating body to the surrounding liquid. This is achieved through closed-form, time-developing solutions expressed in terms of Mittag–Leffler and Bessel functions. Analysis reveals that the rotational velocity and, consequently, the vortex structure of the liquid are influenced by three distinct time zones that differ between integer and noninteger models. Anomalous diffusion, favoring noninteger fractions, dominates at early times but gradually gives way to the integer derivative model behavior as time progresses through a transitional regime. Cone-disk systems find frequent use such as conical diffusers, medical devices, various rheometric, and viscosimetry applications. In this study, we investigate the three-dimensional flow of a water-based Ag-MgO hybrid nanofluid in a static cone-disk system while considering temperature-dependent fluid properties. How the variable fluid properties affect the dynamics and heat transfer features is studied by Reynolds's linearized model for variable viscosity and Chiam's model for variable thermal conductivity. The single-phase nanofluid model is utilized to describe convective heat transfer in hybrid nanofluids, incorporating the experimental data. This model is developed as a coupled system of convective-diffusion equations, encompassing the conservation of momentum and the conservation of thermal energy, in conjunction with an incompressibility condition. A self-similar model is developed by the Lie-group scaling transformations, and the subsequent self-similar equations are then solved numerically. The influence of variable fluid parameters on both swirling and non-swirling flow cases is analyzed. Additionally, the Nusselt number for the disk surface is calculated. It is found that an increase in the temperature-dependent viscosity parameter enhances heat transfer characteristics in the static cone-disk system, while the thermal conductivity parameter has the opposite effect. The end-burning swirl flow hybrid rocket engine is a propulsion system that maintains a constant combustion cross-sectional area for the fuel during combustion, allowing for stable control of the oxygen-to-fuel ratio and combustion performance. This research focuses on investigating the key variables affecting fuel regression rates in end-burning engines with swirl flow and developing a regression rate equation applicable to these combustion systems. Various experimental parameters such as combustion time, injector orifice diameter, fuel diameter, and oxidizer mass flow rate are systematically varied to conduct combustion experiments and analyze their effects on solid fuel regression rates and combustion performance. Through a detailed examination of how these variables affect engine combustion characteristics under various experimental conditions, this research proposes a regression rate model that can be universally applied to types such as for end-burning swirl flow engines. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed regression rate equation in accurately predicting regression rates and emphasize the critical role of swirl flow intensity in influencing regression rates. The flow and heat transfer of a steady, viscous biomagnetic fluid containing magnetic particles caused by the swirling and stretching motion of a three-dimensional cylinder has been investigated numerically in this study. Because fluid and particle rotation are different, a magnetic field is applied in both radial and tangential directions to counteract the effects of rotational viscosity in the flow domain. Partial differential equations are used to represent the governing three-dimensional modeled equations. With the aid of customary similarity transformations, this system of partial differential equations is transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations. They are then numerically resolved utilizing a common finite differences technique that includes iterative processing and the manipulation of tridiagonal matrices. Graphs are used to depict the physical effects of imperative parameters on the swirling velocity, temperature distributions, skin friction coefficient, and the rate of heat transfer. For higher values of the ferromagnetic interaction parameter, it is discovered that the axial velocity increases, whereas temperature and tangential velocity drop. With rising levels of the ferromagnetic interaction parameter, the size of the axial skin friction coefficient and the rate of heat transfer are both accelerated. The arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is commonly faced with stenosis at the juxta-anastomotic (JXA) region of the vein. Implantation of a flexible nitinol stent across the stenosed JXA has led to the retention of functioning AVFs leading to the resulting AVF geometry being distinctly altered, thereby affecting the haemodynamic environment within it. In this study, large eddy simulations of the flow field within a patient-specific AVF geometry before and after stent implantation were conducted to detail the change in flow features. Although the diseased AVF had much lower flow rates, adverse flow features, such as recirculation zones and swirling flow at the anastomosis, and jet flow at the stenosis site were present. Larger velocity fluctuations (leading to higher turbulent kinetic energy) stemming from these flow features were apparent in the diseased AVF compared to the stented AVF. The unsteadiness at the stenosis created large regions of wall shear stress (WSS) fluctuations downstream of the stenosis site that were not as apparent in the stented AVF geometry. The larger pressure drop across the diseased vein, compared to the stented vein, was primarily caused by the constriction at the stenosis, potentially causing the lower flow rate. Furthermore, the WSS fluctuations in the diseased AVF could lead to further disease progression downstream of the stenosis. The change in bulk flow unsteadiness, pressure drop, and WSS behaviour confirms that the haemodynamic environment of the diseased AVF has substantially improved following the flexible stent implantation. Microfluidics technology is promising in developing microparticle manipulation technology due to its nondestructive control and notable adaptability. The manipulation of microparticle based on swirling stagnation point is one of the feasible microfluidics biotechnologies. Aiming to improve the regulation and control of microparticle, baffle wall is introduced into the 2‐microchannel flow field. The theory of wall attachment jet is employed to elucidate the effect of baffle wall. Subsequently, finite volume method simulation is conducted by modeling the swirling flow region (SFR), and the swirling strength is calculated to characterize the SFR's particle‐capturing ability. Experimental validation of the modeling and simulation methods is performed using a printed microfluidic chip, which has demonstrated exceptional reliability. Simulation results show that the baffle wall makes considerable influence on the SFR. Strikingly, a global range adjustment of stagnation point is realized when the baffle wall is configured with a convex shape, which has remarkably outperformed our previous work, where the stagnation point could only move within half range of the field. This work significantly contributes to advanced flow field structure and provides insight into better regulation of stagnation point as well as microparticles. Model experiments were conducted on the hydraulic characteristics of air-water two-phase flow inside the bottom outlet of shaft spillways as a result of natural air suction from air-core vortices at the pipe intake. Experiments were performed in a cylindrical reservoir 2 m in diameter and 1 m high, under a swirling flow around the intake, investigating the most severe two-phase flow regimes. Three different vertical pipe intakes, attached to the floor of the reservoir at its centre, were examined for different flow discharges, establishing different vortex types. Results indicate that the void fraction decreases by changing the type of swirling flow. For a constant submergence depth, reducing the intake pipe diameter or increasing its height led to an increase in void fraction and two-phase slug flow wave velocity, length and frequency. However, by the increase in Kolf number, the frequency of slug waves reduced and the two-phase flow pressure inside the bottom outlet was increased. The relationships between two-phase flow hydraulic characteristics and regimes inside the bottom outlet and types of vortices at the intakes will be of interest to both scientific research and design engineers, to increase the efficiency and safety of pressurised waterway systems. To investigate the self-pulsation characteristics of a liquid-centered swirl coaxial injector with liquid oxygen (LOX) and gas hydrogen (GH2) as the working mediums under supercritical condition, a numerical simulation was employed. The transient simulation of the flow and injection process of cryogenic propellant was carried out using the RNG k − ε turbulence model, VOF model, and Peng-Robinson equation of state. The frequency spectrum of calculated pressure oscillation agreed with the experimental data. The amplitude-frequency characteristics of recess region, LOX, and GH2 paths when self-pulsation occurs were analyzed. The effects of operating parameters, such as the flow rate of LOX or GH2 and the initial GH2 temperature, on the self-pulsation, were evaluated specifically. Results reveal that the self-pulsation results from the periodic variation of pressure and velocity caused by the periodic blocking of annular gas by the liquid sheet. The dominant frequencies of pressure oscillation in the recess region, upstream of LOX, or GH2 path are diverse. But for the points in each region, the dominant frequency is about the same. When the LOX/GH2 mixing ratio increases, the liquid sheet thickness and the number of liquid filaments increase. The position where filaments are massively broken into droplets moves further downstream. For the same mixing ratio, the flow rate of LOX has a greater impact on the atomization features. The pressures corresponding to low or high frequency increase when the initial GH2 temperature raises. The higher temperature would shift the dominant oscillation between the low and high regimes. As a clean fuel with the advantages of abundant reserves, high calorific value, renewability, and zero carbon emissions, hydrogen has broad application prospects in the fields of energy and power. Moreover, the mixing characteristics of hydrogen and air play a crucial role in determining combustion performance. A novel mixing method of hydrogen transverse jets into an air swirl flow was investigated via numerical and experimental approaches. The Schlieren technique and high-speed photography were employed in the experiments. The effects of various swirl numbers and jet momentum flux ratios on the flow field structure, its transient characteristics, and mixing properties were studied. The research results indicate that the complex vortex structure in the mean flow field is jointly affected by the swirl number and the jet momentum flux ratio. An increase in the jet momentum flux ratio has distinct effects on the flow unsteadiness for different swirl numbers, and there exists a critical value of the jet momentum flux ratio that substantially affects the degree of mixing and a characteristic length suitable for normalization of the axial coordinates when describing the centerline concentration decay. Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) includes life-saving support in severe acute cardiac and/or pulmonary failure. In the past 20 years, centrifugal pumps have become the primary choice to deliver the required blood flow. Pumps of various designs, with different approved operating ranges, are today available to clinicians. The use of centrifugal pumps in the low flow condition has been shown to increase hemolytic and thrombogenic risks of the treatment. Further, low flow operation has been associated with retrograde flow at the pump inlet. In this study, experimental and numerical methods have been applied to investigate the operating conditions and fluid dynamical mechanisms leading to reverse flow (or backflow) at the inlet. Reverse flow was predominantly observed in pumps having a top shroud covering the impeller blades, showing a relation between pump geometry and backflow. The shroud divides the pump volume above the impeller into two regions, separating the swirling reverse flow migrating toward the upper pump volute from the main flow, reducing the dissipation of the vortical structures, and allowing the swirling reverse flow to reach further in the pump inlet. The turbulence intensity and yaw angle of crosswinds exert a substantial impact on the aerodynamic characteristics of trains traveling in windy regions. It is urgent to study how the yaw angle and turbulence intensity of incoming flow jointly affect the aerodynamic characteristics of the train and the corresponding flow field under turbulent crosswind. A high-speed train scaled at a ratio of 1/8 of its actual size at different yaw angles was investigated. Three inflow conditions were adopted, including uniform inflow, Iu = 0.05 inflow, and Iu = 0.2 inflow (Iu is turbulence intensity). The turbulent inflow was generated by the synthetic eddy method. The instantaneous and time averaged characteristics of aerodynamic loads and pressure loads of the train were analyzed. The vortex structures, vorticity, swirling strength, mean velocity, reverse flow, and Reynolds stresses are analyzed to explore the flow pattern and flow evolution. The results found that the fluctuation of the aerodynamic loads, the average side fore, and the average rolling moment of the train are remarkably enhanced under turbulent inflow. These results stem from the alterations in the flow field around the train induced by turbulent inflow, consequently leading to variations in surface pressure on the train. As the turbulence intensity of the inflow increases, the stability of the vortex structures decreases, and the position of the large-scale vortex structure has been changed. The present study evaluates numerically the impact of the operating temperature of gas on the cyclone performance viz. the pressure drop, collection efficiency, and flow field details at an inlet velocity, Uin=15 m/s. The gas temperature in a range of 273–1073 K is considered to significantly vary the fluid density and viscosity. For an in-depth analysis, we use advanced closure large-eddy simulation (LES) with the standard Smagorinsky model for treating the unresolved scales. LES can accurately provide additional details on the precessing vortex core phenomena that give rise to enhanced fluctuations in the core region of the cyclone. Apart from the traditional fast Fourier transformation analysis to evaluate the periodicity in the signal, we also perform continuous wavelet transformation and empirical mode decomposition operation on the temporal velocity signals for a better understanding of the flow instabilities—the signals reveal variations of frequency components with time, indicating a non-stationary behavior. It has been observed that an increase in the gas temperature causes lateral contraction of the inner vortex followed by the reduction in its precessional frequency about the cyclone axis with a significantly increased level of noise in the spectra. Furthermore, both pressure losses and collection efficiency largely reduce due to the weakening of swirling strength and enhancement in the fluctuating velocity components with an increase in the gas temperature. This article proposes a model framework coupling in-nozzle flow and external spray and presents its application to the simulation of a commercial pressure-swirl atomizer, focusing on the transient characteristics of the internal flow and subsequently the impact on the spray characteristics. High-fidelity in-nozzle simulation of the liquid–gas interactions is performed using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. Then, a corresponding Lagrangian simulation of sprays is performed where the parcels are injected using the information from the VOF predictions instead of phenomenological models. Both the internal flow and the spray are compared to the experimental data that are available in the literature, and satisfactory agreement is obtained in terms of the in-nozzle velocity, film thickness, and Sauter mean diameter. The effect of the different liquid properties and geometric features on the air–core formation, and consequently, on the spray characteristics have been obtained directly through spray simulation coupled with nozzle flow. As indicated by the Eulerian simulation results, the viscosity plays a key role in the formation of the air core, as the hollow-cone shape can degenerate into a solid cylindrical liquid jet under high viscosity conditions. Additionally, significantly distinct spray characteristics in terms of droplet velocity, mean diameter, and penetration were predicted depending on the formation of air core. Even if there is no stable air core in the nozzle, the spray is still discharged in a swirling motion. As opposed to the converging angle and orifice length, the nozzle diameter has a direct correlation with the formation of air core and spray atomization. This study implies that the in-nozzle flow field, which is usually ignored in fuel spray simulation, has a substantial impact on the spray characteristics and should be taken into account for design optimization by applying the developed one-way coupling approach. The nozzle is the key component of water mist fire extinguishing system. As a response to the problems of small injection angle associated with straight jet nozzles and the weak axial momentum of swirl nozzles, a swirling–straight composite nozzle is designed in this work. The comparison with a straight jet nozzle and a pressure swirl nozzle shows that the swirling–straight composite nozzle has a larger axial momentum and better injection angle. Under the same pressure, the volume flow of the swirling–straight composite nozzle is more than 27% of the pressure swirl nozzle, and the injection angle was more than 65% of straight jet nozzle. The numerical model of the swirling–straight composite nozzle is established. Meantime, the internal flow field characteristics and the influence of the straight jet aperture on the performance are studied. The results demonstrate that the straight jet fluid and swirling fluid can be mixed well in the nozzle, and a larger axial momentum and tangential momentum can be obtained. With the increase of the straight jet aperture, the swirl effect in the nozzle becomes weaker, the injection angle becomes smaller, and the axial momentum improves. When the straight jet aperture increases from 1.1 to 1.9 mm, the straight jet volume flow at the nozzle inlet increases by 127%, and the injection angle reduces by 40%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aimed to investigate the heat transfer (HT) properties of a tubular heat exchanger (HX) by using innovative baffle plate arrangements. The newly designed baffle plate was circular with triangular openings and adjustable triangular flow deflectors. These deflectors were strategically placed at the inlet of the HX to create a swirling flow downstream. Three baffle plates were installed along the flow direction with different length‐to‐diameter ratios (pitch ratios) to assess their impact on HT, pressure drop, and thermal enhancement factor. The study compared these results with a smooth channel under varying Reynolds numbers (16,500–29,500). The findings revealed that both the pitch ratio (0.6–1.2) and the inclination angle of the deflectors (30⁰–50⁰) significantly affected the HX's performance. Notably, the baffle plate with a deflector inclination angle of 30° and a pitch ratio of 1 showed a remarkable average improvement of 36.5% compared to other angles and ratios. In this study, extensive research was conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) ANSYS®–FLUENT, with the k–ε turbulence heat transfer module to optimize the rifled‐tube heat exchanger through parametric modifications for heat transfer and Goodness factor enhancement. This is based on predicting the performance of various heat transfer surfaces such as rectangular and two opposite right‐angled triangular ribs. The objective of this research was to enhance the heat transfer efficiency of a rifled tube with rectangular ribs, a height of 0.775 mm, and helix angles of 30° and 58°. The research findings demonstrated that the heat transfer rate improved owing to the establishment of a secondary helical or swirl flow near the wall region, leading to an enhanced heat transfer. The modification of the rib geometry from rectangular to two opposite right‐angled triangles increased the heat transfer by 17%, whereas the pressure drop remained relatively constant at 0.62 mm of rib height. This benefit is directly translated into heat transfer without any change in pressure drop. The values of the friction factor (f), Nusselt number (Nu), and goodness factor are appropriate for the new geometry in relation to the reference geometry. An exploratory investigation was conducted to analyze a tubular heat exchanger's turbulent heat transfer characteristics using an innovative baffle plate design. The design incorporated a perforated conical baffle plate and an adjustable rectangular deflector. The strategic placement of this baffle plate at the heat exchanger inlet facilitated a swirling flow downstream. To assess the impact of this design, three baffle plates with varying pitch ratios (l/D) were positioned in the direction of the flow. The study examined the effects of pitch ratio (ranging from 0.6 to 1.2), deflector inclination angle (ranging from 30° to 50°), and Reynolds numbers (ranging from 16,500 to 29,500). Moreover, the size of the conical baffle plate (H/D) was altered (from 0.25 to 0.15). The findings highlighted the substantial influence of pitch ratio, inclination angle, and height ratio on the heat exchanger's performance. Notably, the configuration featuring an inclination angle of 50° and height ratio of 0.15 exhibited an average performance improvement of 22% compared to other height ratios, inclination angles, and pitch ratios. Water-lubricated oil–water flow is an effective low-energy consumption method for pipeline transportation. This study proposes a novel wellbore lubrication fitting (WLF) for developing a core-swirling flow to reduce flow resistance and enhance lubrication efficiency. The pressure drop across the lubricating fitting, the maximum oil volume fraction at the overflow outlet and the drag reduction percentage of core-swirling flow were taken as the indicators, and the fluid calculation software Ansys Fluent was applied to optimize the structural parameters of the WLF with orthogonal and single-factor methods. The experimental study was carried out with mineral oil and tap water. The results indicate that the swirl generator can develop a stable and low-viscosity liquid annulus to isolate the oil from the pipe wall and reduce the flow resistance of viscous oil. The optimized WLF demonstrates the clear core-swirling flow with input velocity between 0.48 and 0.62 m/s. The experimental pressure drops deviate from the simulated data within ±25%. The drag reduction percentage of the core-swirling flow is above 90% with the input velocity above 0.51 m/s. Percutaneous mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices are designed for short-term treatment in cases of acute decompensated heart failure as a bridge to transplant or recovery. Some of the known complications of MCS treatments are related to their hemodynamics in the aorta. The current study investigates the effect of MCS on the aortic flow. The study uses combined experimental and numerical methods to delineate complex flow structures. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to capture the vortical and turbulent flow characteristics in a glass model of the human aorta. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are used to complete the 3D flow in the aorta. Three specific MCS configurations are examined: a suction pump with a counterclockwise (CCW) rotating impeller, a suction pump with a clockwise (CW) rotating impeller, and a discharge pump with a straight jet. These models were examined under varying flow rates (1–2.5 L/min). The results show that the pump configuration strongly influences the flow in the thoracic aorta. The rotating impeller of the suction pump induces a dominant swirling flow in the aorta. The swirling flow distributes the incoming jet and reduces the turbulent intensity near the aortic valve and in the aorta. In addition, at high flow rates, the local vortices formed near the pump are washed downstream toward the aortic arch. Specifically, an MCS device with a CCW rotating impeller induces a non-physiological CCW helical flow in the descending aorta (which is opposite to the natural helical flow), while CW swirl combines better with the natural helical flow. Mesoscale eddies affect phytoplankton in several ways, including the horizontal dispersal and mixing of populations. Coherent eddies trap and contain fluid masses, whereas other eddies mix more freely with surrounding waters. To evaluate the role of lateral dispersal and trapping on the biogeochemical properties of eddies, we must accurately characterize their coherency. We employed a Lagrangian approach to identify materially coherent structures in remote sensing observations and developed a methodology to track them over their entire individual lifetimes. We provide an atlas of two decades of coherent eddies with an 8 d resolution in an intensely studied region of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre 10.5281/zenodo.8139149. The atlas was specifically designed to facilitate biogeochemical applications and was synchronized with available ocean color products. We identified coherent features using backward Lagrangian trajectories because the recent history of coherency (rather than the future coherency) will be most valuable for interpreting associated biogeochemical signatures. We compared the atlas of Lagrangian coherent eddies with an atlas of Eulerian eddies identified using the more conventionally used Sea Level Anomaly method. Although 65 % of tracked Sea Level Anomaly eddies are classified as coherent at some point in their lifetime, only 54 % contain a Lagrangian coherent structure at any given time. We found similar variations in the temporal and spatial distributions of coherent and Sea Level Anomaly eddies. However, strictly coherent eddies have a clearer relationship between size and longevity and form distinct regional regimes based on polarity. We illustrate the potential of the coherent eddy atlas for biogeochemical applications by examining the relationship between bloom development and eddy evolution in a case study of a Hawaiian Lee cyclone. This study computationally investigates small-scale flickering buoyant diffusion flames in externally swirling flows and focuses on identifying and characterizing various distinct dynamical behaviors of the flames. To explore the impact of finite rate chemistry on flame flicker, especially in sufficiently strong swirling flows, a one-step reaction mechanism is utilized for investigation. By adjusting the external swirling flow conditions (the intensity R and the inlet angle α ), six flame modes in distinct dynamical behaviors were computationally identified in both physical and phase spaces. These modes, including the flickering flame, oscillating flame, steady flame, lifted flame, spiral flame, and flame with a vortex bubble, were analyzed from the perspective of vortex dynamics. The numerical investigation provides relatively comprehensive information on these flames. Under the weakly swirling condition, the flames retain flickering (the periodic pinch-off of the flame) and are axisymmetric, while the frequency nonlinearly increases with the swirling intensity. A relatively high swirling intensity can cause the disappearance of the flame pinch-off, as the toroidal vortex sheds around either the tip or the downstream of the flame. The flicker vanishes, but the flame retains axisymmetric in a small amplitude oscillation or a steady stay. A sufficiently high swirling intensity causes a small Damköhler number, leading to the lift-off of the flame (the local extinction occurs at the flame base). Under the same swirling intensity but large swirling angles, the asymmetric modes of the spiral and vortex bubble flames were likely to occur. With R and α increasing, these flames exhibit axisymmetric and asymmetric patterns, and their dynamical behaviors become more complex. To feature the vortical flows in flames, the phase portraits are established based on the velocity information of six positions along the axis of the flame, and the dynamical behaviors of various flames are presented and compared in the phase space. Observing the phase portraits and their differences in distinct modes could help identify the dynamical behaviors of flames and understand complex phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
