Abstract

Since 2011 the Global Energy and Water cycle Exchanges (GEWEX) Water Vapor Assessment (G-VAP) has provided performance analyses for state-of-the-art reanalysis and satellite water vapour products to the GEWEX Data and Analysis Panel (GDAP) and the user community in general. A significant component of the work undertaken by G-VAP is to characterise the quality and uncertainty of these water vapour records to; i) ensure full exploitation and ii) avoid incorrect use or interpretation of results. This study presents results from the second phase of G-VAP, where we have extended and expanded our analysis of Total Column Water Vapour (TCWV) from phase 1, in conjunction with updating the G-VAP archive. For version 2 of the archive, we consider 28 freely available and mature satellite and reanalysis data products, remapped to a regular longitude-latitude grid of 2°× 2°, and on monthly time steps between January 1979 and December 2019. We first analysed all records for a 'common' short period of five years (2005–2009), focusing on variability (spatial & seasonal) and deviation from the ensemble mean. We observed that clear-sky daytime-only satellite products were generally drier than the ensemble mean, and seasonal variability/disparity in several regions up to 12 kg/m2 related to original spatial resolution and temporal sampling. For 11 of the 28 data records, further analysis was undertaken between 1988–2014. Within this 'long period', key results show i) trends between -1.18±0.68 to 3.82±3.94 kg/m2/decade and -0.39±0.27 to 1.24±0.85 kg/m2/decade were found over ice-free global oceans and land surfaces respectively, and ii) regression coefficients of TWCV against surface temperatures of 6.17±0.24 to 27.02±0.51 %/K over oceans (using sea surface temperature) and 3.00±0.17 to 7.77±0.16 %/K over land (using surface air temperature). It is important to note that trends estimated within G-VAP are used to identify issues in the data records rather than analyse climate change. Additionally, breakpoints have been identified and characterised for both land and ocean surfaces within this period. Finally, we present a spatial analysis of correlations to six climate indices within the "long period", highlighting regional areas of significant positive and negative correlation and the level of agreement among records. 12. Feasibility of Liquid Water Path Estimation of Over Land Using Satellite-Based Ka-Band Passive Microwave Data

Abstract

We investigate the feasibility of a method of estimating liquid water path (LWP, the sum of LWPs of cloud and rain) over land using satellite-based Ka-band passive microwave measurements. Specifically, we utilize brightness temperatures at 36.5 GHz (TB36) from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E). TB36 is appropriate for liquid-only estimation as it is less affected by ice scattering compared to higher frequency measurements. However, estimating LWP over land using TB36 is challenging due to weak cloud signals and strong and heterogeneous land radiation in TB36. To address this, our method (Le36) dynamically estimates land emissivity using lower frequency (6.9 and 10.7 GHz) measurements from AMSR-E, minimizing land radiation errors. Synthetic simulations indicated that Le36 has high performance in cases of a wide range of LWPs (~8 kg/m2) for cloud-only cases and a range of about 1.5~8.0 kg/m2 for cloud-plus-rain cases if the cloud top (CT) height is appropriately set. For cases without suitable CT settings, emphasis should be placed on high-CT clouds (>8000 m). In real-case applications, Le36 estimates showed reasonable agreement with independent cloud radar products, even over land. Furthermore, a comparison between Le36 and a method using 89.0 GHz (Le89) reveals that Le36 outperforms Le89 for liquid-only estimation, while estimates from Le89 include ice scattering effects. This study highlights the promising performance of Ka-band LWP estimation over land by mitigating the ice scattering effect and suggests the potential for more detailed cloud water content estimation using the TB36-TB89 difference.

18. Latest Improvements and Future Plans of the JAXA GHRSST Datasets of MW, LEO-IR and GEO-IR

Abstract

Short abstract JAXA operationally produces and distributes various satellite-based SST datasets by using passive microwave, polar-orbital InfraRed and geostationary InfraRed imagers in GDS2.0 format from the JAXA GHRSST server (https://suzaku.eorc.jaxa.jp/GHRSST/) and Himawari Monitor (https://www.eorc.jaxa.jp/ptree/) in near-real-time basis and archives past period data since June 2002. We have updated SGLI SST Ver.3 to improve cloud masks in November 2021 and plan to update AMSR2 SST Ver.4.1 soon. Due to the improved cloud masking, SGLI SST V3.0 in the daytime are retrieved from the SGLI measurements only with pre-calculated RTM-based coefficients and Baysian-based PDFs and are 100% independent from any other in-situ and analysed data. AMSR2 SST Ver.4.1 will correct underestimation trends versus in-situ observations over Northern low- and mid-latitudes since 2019 and provide SST retrievals under high-wind and weak precipitation conditions, which are set to missing in previous versions. We also prepare tuning of Himawari SST algorithm corresponding to planning change-over of the Japanese geostationary satellite from Himawari-8 to -9 scheduled in late 2022. Overlap operations of Himawari-8 and -9 are planned by Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) for a couple of months to inter-calibrate two SST products. We are also preparing multiple SST products for the AMSR3 onboard the GOSAT-GW satellite to be launched in JFY2023. Those products will succeed SST datasets of AMSR-E and AMSR2 and improve robustness of SST retrievals and spatial resolution by adding new channels in 10-GHz. We will introduce the latest status of SST datasets and future plans for AMSR3.

宇宙航空研究開発機構（JAXA）が所有する膨大な地球観測データを，異なる分野のユーザであっても簡単に利用できる仕組みを提供し，データの利用用途を広げることを目的として，地球観測データのWEB API（JAXA OPEN API）を整備した．また，そのAPI を利用したアプリケーションの開発コンテスト（JAXA OPEN API COMPETITION）を開催し，地球観測データを利用した多くのアプリケーションが創造されることを実証した．本稿では，これらの一連の活動と本活動がもたらす成果について述べる．, JAXA OPEN API is a Web API (Application Programming Interface) designed to provide simple and efficient access to people beyond the public sector, including scientific and educational fields, with a view to promoting the broader sharing of Earth science data.
