In the state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography (PET), information about the polarization of annihilation photons is not available. Current PET systems track molecules labeled with positron-emitting radioisotopes by detecting the propagation direction of two photons from positron-electron annihilation. However, annihilation photons carry more information than just the site where they originated. Here we present a novel J-PET scanner built from plastic scintillators, in which annihilation photons interact predominantly via the Compton effect, providing information about photon polarization in addition to information on photon direction of propagation. Theoretically, photons from the decay of positronium in a vacuum are maximally entangled in polarization. However, in matter, when the positron from positronium annihilates with the electron bound to the atom, the question arises whether the photons from such annihilation are maximally entangled. In this work, we determine the distribution of the relative angle between polarization orientations of two photons from positron-electron annihilation in a porous polymer. Contrary to prior results for positron annihilation in aluminum and copper, where the strength of observed correlations is as expected for maximally entangled photons, our results show a significant deviation. We demonstrate that in porous polymer, photon polarization correlation is weaker than for maximally entangled photons but stronger than for separable photons. The data indicate that more than 40% of annihilations in Amberlite resin lead to a non-maximally entangled state. Our result indicates the degree of correlation depends on the annihilation mechanism and the molecular arrangement. We anticipate that the introduced Compton interaction-based PET system opens a promising perspective for exploring polarization correlations in PET as a novel diagnostic indicator.

The primary goal of the AEgIS experiment is to precisely measure the free fall of antihydrogen within Earth's gravitational field. To this end, a cold ~50K antihydrogen beam has to pass through two grids forming a moir\'e deflectometer before annihilating onto a position-sensitive detector, which shall determine the vertical position of the annihilation vertex relative to the grids with micrometric accuracy. Here we introduce a vertexing detector based on a modified mobile camera sensor and experimentally demonstrate that it can measure the position of antiproton annihilations with an accuracy of $0.62^{+0.40}_{-0.22}\mu m$, which represents a 35-fold improvement over the previous state-of-the-art for real-time antiproton vertexing. Importantly, these antiproton detection methods are directly applicable to antihydrogen. Moreover, the sensitivity to light of the sensor enables the in-situ calibration of the moir\'e deflectometer, significantly reducing systematic errors. The quasi-2D Shastry-Sutherland model has remained topical in the field of condensed matter physics for the last two decades, following the experimental realization of the model in the material SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. Since then, research into the Shastry-Sutherland system has revealed more nuanced physics than initially predicted; recent theoretical works have even predicted a quantum spin liquid phase may exist. Herein, we report on a new Shastry-Sutherland lattice material, Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$, of the rare-earth melilite family RE$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$. We find, through SQUID magnetometry, powder neutron diffraction, specific heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation, that Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ lacks magnetic order and exhibits persistent spin dynamics to at least 17 mK. We propose the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ as a candidate to host a quantum spin liquid ground-state., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. We investigate the magnetic properties of $S=1$ antiferromagnetic diamond lattice, Ni$X_{2}$(pyrimidine)$_{2}$ ($X$ = Cl, Br), hosting a single-ion anisotropy (SIA) orientation which alternates between neighbouring sites. Through neutron diffraction measurements of the $X$ = Cl compound, the ordered state spins are found to align collinearly along a pseudo-easy-axis, a unique direction created by the intersection of two easy planes. Similarities in the magnetization, exhibiting spin-flop transitions, and the magnetic susceptibility in the two compounds imply that the same magnetic structure and a pseudo-easy-axis is also present for $X$ = Br. We estimate the Hamiltonian parameters by combining analytical calculations and Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations of the spin-flop and saturation field. The MC simulations also reveal that the spin-flop transition occurs when the applied field is parallel to the pseudo-easy-axis. Contrary to conventional easy-axis systems, there exist field directions perpendicular to the pseudo-easy-axis for which the magnetic saturation is approached asymptotically and no symmetry-breaking phase transition is observed at finite fields., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Heat and disorder are opponents of magnetism. This fact, expressed in Curie's law established more than a century ago, holds even in the highly non-equilibrium interaction of ultra-intense laser pulses with magnetic matter. In contradiction to this, here we demonstrate that optical excitation of a ferromagnet can abrogate the link between temperature and order and observe 100 femtosecond class laser pulses to drive a reduction in spin entropy, concomitant to an increase in spin polarization and magnetic moment persisting after relaxation back to local charge equilibrium. This both establishes disorder as an unexpected resource for magnetic control at ultrafast times and, by the provision of a purely electronic mechanism that does not involve reconfiguration of the crystal lattice, suggests a novel scheme for spin-based signal processing and information storage significantly faster than current methodology.

High-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductors have attracted significant attention due to their exceptional low-temperature mechanical and superconducting properties. We report the synthesis and thorough characterization of an equiatomic HEA superconductor with the composition Sc$_{0.20}$V$_{0.20}$Ti$_{0.20}$Hf$_{0.20}$Nb$_{0.20}$, crystallizing in a body-centered cubic crystal structure (Im3$\bar{m}$). Our investigation, using magnetization, transport, and heat capacity measurements, reveals the presence of weakly coupled, fully gapped superconductivity with a transition temperature of 4.17(3) K and the upper critical field exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The metallic nature, combined with a high upper critical field, positions it as a promising candidate for applications in superconducting devices., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The creation and manipulation of coherence continues to capture the attention of scientists and engineers. The optical laser is a canonical example of a system that, in principle, exhibits complete coherence. Recent research has focused on the creation of coherent, laser-like states in other physical systems. The phonon laser is one example where it is possible to amplify self-sustained mechanical oscillations. A single mode phonon laser in a levitated optical tweezer has been demonstrated through appropriate balance of active feedback gain and damping. In this work, coherent control of the dynamics of an optical tweezer phonon laser is used to share coherence between its different modes of oscillation, creating a multimode phonon laser. The coupling of the modes is achieved by periodically rotating the asymmetric optical potential in the transverse focal plane of the trapping beam via trap laser polarization rotation. The presented theory and experiment demonstrate that coherence can be transferred across different modes of an optical tweezer phonon laser, and are a step toward using these systems for precision measurement and quantum information processing., Comment: \c{opyright} 2024 Optica Publishing Group. We present comprehensive investigations into the structural, superconducting, and topological properties of Bi$_2$PdPt. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements performed on polycrystalline Bi$_2$PdPt demonstrate a superconducting transition at $\approx$ 0.8 K. Moreover, muon spin relaxation/rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements present evidence for a time reversal symmetry preserving, isotropically gapped superconducting state in Bi$_2$PdPt. We have also performed density-functional theory (DFT) calculations on Bi$_2$PdPt alongside the more general isostructural systems, BiPd$_{x}$Pt$_{1-x}$, of which Bi$_2$PdPt and $\gamma$-BiPd are special cases for $x=0.5$ and $x=1$ respectively. We have calculated the $Z_2$ topological index from our DFT calculations for a range of substitution fractions, $x$, between $x=0$ and $x=1$ characterizing the topology of the band structure. We find a non-trivial topological state when $x>0.75$ and a trivial topological state when $x<0.75$. Therefore our results indicate that BiPd$_{x}$Pt$_{1-x}$ could be a topological superconductor for $x>0.75$., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Rhenium-based superconductors have recently attracted significant interest due to their unconventional superconducting properties. In this work, we report the synthesis and properties of new superconducting Re$_{7}$X$_{3}$ (X = Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf) binary alloys which maintain a fixed composition of rhenium while crystallizing in centrosymmetric to non-centrosymmetric crystal structures, depending on the elements of the X site. Comprehensive structural and superconducting properties were investigated using powder x-ray diffraction, AC transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements, and on the basis of these measurements, the superconducting phase diagram was constructed. The results suggest a complex interplay of crystal structure and the Re/X ratio, which governs the strength of spin-orbital coupling and controls the unconventional superconducting behavior in Re-based superconductors., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

Context - Around the year 2000, Triton's south pole experienced an extreme summer solstice that occurs every about 650 years, when the subsolar latitude reached about 50{\deg}. Bracketing this epoch, a few occultations probed Triton's atmosphere in 1989, 1995, 1997, 2008 and 2017. A recent ground-based stellar occultation observed on 6 October 2022 provides a new measurement of Triton's atmospheric pressure which is presented here. Aims- The goal is to constrain the Volatile Transport Models (VTMs) of Triton's atmosphere that is basically in vapor pressure equilibrium with the nitrogen ice at its surface. Methods - Fits to the occultation light curves yield Triton's atmospheric pressure at the reference radius 1400 km, from which the surface pressure is induced. Results - The fits provide a pressure p_1400= 1.211 +/- 0.039 microbar at radius 1400 km (47 km altitude), from which a surface pressure of p_surf= 14.54 +/- 0.47 microbar is induced (1-sigma error bars). To within error bars, this is identical to the pressure derived from the previous occultation of 5 October 2017, p_1400 = 1.18 +/- 0.03 microbar and p_surf= 14.1 +/- 0.4 microbar, respectively. Based on recent models of Triton's volatile cycles, the overall evolution over the last 30 years of the surface pressure is consistent with N2 condensation taking place in the northern hemisphere. However, models typically predict a steady decrease in surface pressure for the period 2005-2060, which is not confirmed by this observation. Complex surface-atmosphere interactions, such as ice albedo runaway and formation of local N2 frosts in the equatorial regions of Triton could explain the relatively constant pressure between 2017 and 2022., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

A long standing problem in time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) has been the absence of a functional able to capture excitonic physics under laser pump conditions. Here we introduce a Kohn-Sham-Proca scheme that we demonstrate reproduces both linear response excitonic effects in the absorption in excellent agreement with experiment for a wide range of materials, but also captures excitonic physics in the highly non-linear regime of ultrafast laser pumping, in particular laser fluence dependent "bleaching" (i.e. reduction) of the excitonic weight and the appearance of excitonic side bands. The approach is a procedural functional -- the Kohn-Sham and Proca equations are simultaneously time propagated -- allowing the straight-forward inclusion of, for example, lattice and spin degrees of freedom into excitonic physics., Comment: 4 page 3 figures

We report the discovery of a novel form of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) oxide, which stands as the first example of long-range, coherent polymorphism in this class of inorganic solids. Rather than the well-known, uniform stacking of perovskite blocks ubiquitously found in RP phases, this newly discovered polymorph of the bilayer RP phase $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$adopts a novel stacking sequence in which single and trilayer blocks of $NiO_{6}$ octahedra alternate in a 1313 sequence. Crystals of this new polymorph are described in space group Cmmm, although we note evidence for a competing Imcm variant. Transport measurements at ambient pressure reveal metallic character with evidence of a charge density wave transition with onset at T = 134 K, which lies intermediate between that of the standard 2222 polymorph of $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$ (space group Amam) and the trilayer RP phase, $La_{4}Ni_{3}O_{10}$. The discovery of such polymorphism could reverberate to the expansive range of science and applications that rely on RP materials, particularly the recently reported signatures of superconductivity with $T_{c}$ as high as 80 K above 14 GPa in bilayer $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures

We conducted a thorough evaluation of various state-of-the-art strategies to prepare the ground state wavefunction of a system on a quantum computer, specifically within the framework of variational quantum eigensolver (VQE). Despite the advantages of VQE and its variants, the current quantum computational chemistry calculations often provide inaccurate results for larger molecules, mainly due to the polynomial growth in the depth of quantum circuits and the number of two-qubit gates, such as CNOT gates. To alleviate this problem, we aim to design efficient quantum circuits that would outperform the existing ones on the current noisy quantum devices. In this study, we designed a novel quantum circuit that reduces the required circuit depth and number of two-qubit entangling gates by about 60%, while retaining the accuracy of the ground state energies close to the chemical accuracy. Moreover, even in the presence of device noise, these novel shallower circuits yielded substantially low error rates than the existing approaches for predicting the ground state energies of molecules. By considering the umbrella inversion process in ammonia molecule as an example, we demonstrated the advantages of this new approach and estimated the energy barrier for the inversion process., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures
