Abstract

The effect of biodeterioration on the structural connection performance of timber for conventional framing and mass timber has been investigated recently, but there is a need for additional data as well as for the development of analytical models to utilize these data. An empirical material model (seismic analysis of wood frame shear walls) was fitted to cyclic connection test data of four species of cross-laminated timber at different levels of biodeterioration by two brown-rot fungi. These model inputs were then analyzed to account for trends between wood species and fungal species. Weak trends were most prominent for initial stiffness, intercept load, and displacement at peak force. Correlations were poor with postyield and postpeak stiffness modifiers. These relationships were consistent both as a function of time and as a function of mass loss, but additional data are needed to more accurately predict the effects. Abstract

The layered honeycomb lattice iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is the closest realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, primarily due to the enhanced interlayer separation and nearly ideal honeycomb lattice. We report pressure-induced structural evolution of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) up to $\sim$17 GPa and Raman scattering measurements up to $\sim$25 GPa. A structural phase transition (monoclinic $C2/c \: \rightarrow$ triclinic $P\bar{1}$) is observed with a broad mixed phase pressure range ($\sim$4 to 15 GPa). The triclinic phase consists of heavily distorted honeycomb lattice with Ir-Ir dimer formation and a collapsed interlayer separation. In the stability range of the low-pressure monoclinic phase, structural evolution maintains the Kitaev configuration up to 4 GPa. This is supported by the observed enhanced magnetic frustration in dc susceptibility without emergence of any magnetic ordering and an enhanced dynamic Raman susceptibility. High-pressure resistance measurements up to 25 GPa in the temperature range 1.4--300 K show resilient non-metallic $R$($T$) behaviour with significantly reduced resistivity in the high-pressure phase. The Mott 3D variable-range-hopping conduction with much reduced characteristic energy scale $T_0$ suggests that the high-pressure phase is at the boundary of localized-itinerant crossover. Using first-principles density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations, we find that at ambient pressure $\rm Cu_2IrO_3$ exists in monoclinic $P2_1/c$ phase which is energetically lower than $C2/c$ phase (both the structures are consistent with experimental XRD pattern). DFT reveals structural transition from $P2_1/c$ to $P\bar{1}$ structure at 7 GPa (involving dimerization of Ir-Ir bonds) in agreement with experimentally observed transition pressure., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures

30. Investigation of Thermal Effects on Nailed Connection of Mass Ply Panels

Abstract

Mass ply panels (MPP), a relatively new mass timber product, has been utilized in several construction projects as diaphragm and wall panels. Connection for MPP is a crucial structural component that requires a better understanding. This article presents an experimental investigation into elevated temperature exposure--driven property degradation of MPP nailed connections, which is important for both the design of new structures in terms of fire resistance and the rehabilitation of structures partially damaged by fire. One control group and 32 exposure groups, which were combinations of eight elevated temperatures and four exposure durations, were investigated. The failure modes and yield strength of the nailed connection were analyzed as a function of elevated temperature and exposure time and compared with the prediction from the National Design Specification and existing literature. The results show a decrease of up to 45 percent in initial stiffness and ultimate load; meanwhile, there was no statistical evidence for the change in yield load in the majority of testing groups. Two analytical models, namely, multilinear regression and first-order kinetics model, were proposed to model the degradation of initial stiffness and ultimate strength. The kinetics model provided a better prediction and suggested that the initial stiffness and ultimate strength of the nail connection degraded over time at rates depending on the exposure temperature., An increasing interest in renewable and sustainable materials and recent advances in engineered wood products have driven the applications of mass timber in mid-rise to tall buildings. Abstract

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a prefabricated solid engineered wood product made of at least three orthogonally bonded layers of solid-sawn lumber that are laminated by gluing longitudinal and transverse layers with structural adhesives to form a solid panel. Previous studies have shown that the CLT buildings can perform well in seismic loading and are recognized as the essential role of connector performance in structural design, modelling, and analysis of CLT buildings. When CLT is composed of high-grade/high-density layers for the outer lamellas and low-grade/low-density for the core of the panels, the CLT panels are herein designated as hybrid CLT panels as opposed to conventional CLT panels that are built using one lumber type for both outer and core lamellas. This paper presents results of a testing program developed to estimate the cyclic performance of CLT connectors applied on hybrid CLT layups. Two connectors are selected, which can be used in wall-to-floor connections. These are readily available in the North American market. Characterization of the performance of connectors is done in two perpendicular directions under a modified CUREE cyclic loading protocol. Depending on the mode of failure, in some cases, testing results indicate that when the nails or screws penetrate the low-grade/low-density core lumber, a statistically significant difference is obtained between hybrid and conventional layups. Abstract

Dowel bearing strength of three cross-laminated timber (CLT) species (Douglas-fir, Norway spruce, spruce pine fir) were periodically assessed through 40 weeks of exposure to two brown rot fungi species (Gloeophyllum trabeum and Rhodonia placenta). Time-dependent regression models were developed to describe the relationship between level of fungal exposure and dowel bearing strength of CLT. Obtained dowel bearing strength values were used to predict the capacity of floor-to-wall CLT connection systems. Predicted strength values were compared with capacity of actual connection systems which were subjected to similar biodeterioration treatments. Significant reductions in the dowel bearing strength of CLT were observed 30 weeks after fungal inoculation. Similar patterns of degradation were observed for both fungi in all three CLT species, but R. placenta was slightly more aggressive than G. trabeum, causing a 16.2 MPa reduction in dowel bearing strength of Douglas-fir after 40 weeks of exposure. Connection capacities estimated using National Design Specification yield models for dowel type fasteners and the dowel bearing strength of fungal-damaged CLT were consistent with observed properties and were within 85% of actual capacity of connections tested, especially in early stages of decay.
