The recent development of Sora leads to a new era in text-to-video (T2V) generation. Along with this comes the rising concern about its security risks. The generated videos may contain illegal or unethical content, and there is a lack of comprehensive quantitative understanding of their safety, posing a challenge to their reliability and practical deployment. Previous evaluations primarily focus on the quality of video generation. While some evaluations of text-to-image models have considered safety, they cover fewer aspects and do not address the unique temporal risk inherent in video generation. To bridge this research gap, we introduce T2VSafetyBench, a new benchmark designed for conducting safety-critical assessments of text-to-video models. We define 12 critical aspects of video generation safety and construct a malicious prompt dataset using LLMs and jailbreaking prompt attacks. Based on our evaluation results, we draw several important findings, including: 1) no single model excels in all aspects, with different models showing various strengths; 2) the correlation between GPT-4 assessments and manual reviews is generally high; 3) there is a trade-off between the usability and safety of text-to-video generative models. This indicates that as the field of video generation rapidly advances, safety risks are set to surge, highlighting the urgency of prioritizing video safety. We hope that T2VSafetyBench can provide insights for better understanding the safety of video generation in the era of generative AI.

Despite the great progress of 3D vision, data privacy and security issues in 3D deep learning are not explored systematically. In the domain of 2D images, many availability attacks have been proposed to prevent data from being illicitly learned by unauthorized deep models. However, unlike images represented on a fixed dimensional grid, point clouds are characterized as unordered and unstructured sets, posing a significant challenge in designing an effective availability attack for 3D deep learning. In this paper, we theoretically show that extending 2D availability attacks directly to 3D point clouds under distance regularization is susceptible to the degeneracy, rendering the generated poisons weaker or even ineffective. This is because in bi-level optimization, introducing regularization term can result in update directions out of control. To address this issue, we propose a novel Feature Collision Error-Minimization (FC-EM) method, which creates additional shortcuts in the feature space, inducing different update directions to prevent the degeneracy of bi-level optimization. Moreover, we provide a theoretical analysis that demonstrates the effectiveness of the FC-EM attack. Extensive experiments on typical point cloud datasets, 3D intracranial aneurysm medical dataset, and 3D face dataset verify the superiority and practicality of our approach. Machine unlearning provides viable solutions to revoke the effect of certain training data on pre-trained model parameters. Existing approaches provide unlearning recipes for classification and generative models. However, a category of important machine learning models, i.e., contrastive learning (CL) methods, is overlooked. In this paper, we fill this gap by first proposing the framework of Machine Unlearning for Contrastive learning (MUC) and adapting existing methods. Furthermore, we observe that several methods are mediocre unlearners and existing auditing tools may not be sufficient for data owners to validate the unlearning effects in contrastive learning. We thus propose a novel method called Alignment Calibration (AC) by explicitly considering the properties of contrastive learning and optimizing towards novel auditing metrics to easily verify unlearning. We empirically compare AC with baseline methods on SimCLR, MoCo and CLIP. We observe that AC addresses drawbacks of existing methods: (1) achieving state-of-the-art performance and approximating exact unlearning (retraining); (2) allowing data owners to clearly visualize the effect caused by unlearning through black-box auditing.

The generalization bound is a crucial theoretical tool for assessing the generalizability of learning methods and there exist vast literatures on generalizability of normal learning, adversarial learning, and data poisoning. Unlike other data poison attacks, the backdoor attack has the special property that the poisoned triggers are contained in both the training set and the test set and the purpose of the attack is two-fold. To our knowledge, the generalization bound for the backdoor attack has not been established. In this paper, we fill this gap by deriving algorithm-independent generalization bounds in the clean-label backdoor attack scenario. Precisely, based on the goals of backdoor attack, we give upper bounds for the clean sample population errors and the poison population errors in terms of the empirical error on the poisoned training dataset. Furthermore, based on the theoretical result, a new clean-label backdoor attack is proposed that computes the poisoning trigger by combining adversarial noise and indiscriminate poison. We show its effectiveness in a variety of settings.

This paper studies the challenging black-box adversarial attack that aims to generate adversarial examples against a black-box model by only using output feedback of the model to input queries. Some previous methods improve the query efficiency by incorporating the gradient of a surrogate white-box model into query-based attacks due to the adversarial transferability. However, the localized gradient is not informative enough, making these methods still query-intensive. In this paper, we propose a Prior-guided Bayesian Optimization (P-BO) algorithm that leverages the surrogate model as a global function prior in black-box adversarial attacks. As the surrogate model contains rich prior information of the black-box one, P-BO models the attack objective with a Gaussian process whose mean function is initialized as the surrogate model's loss. Our theoretical analysis on the regret bound indicates that the performance of P-BO may be affected by a bad prior. Therefore, we further propose an adaptive integration strategy to automatically adjust a coefficient on the function prior by minimizing the regret bound. Extensive experiments on image classifiers and large vision-language models demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in reducing queries and improving attack success rates compared with the state-of-the-art black-box attacks. Availability attacks can prevent the unauthorized use of private data and commercial datasets by generating imperceptible noise and making unlearnable examples before release. Ideally, the obtained unlearnability prevents algorithms from training usable models. When supervised learning (SL) algorithms have failed, a malicious data collector possibly resorts to contrastive learning (CL) algorithms to bypass the protection. Through evaluation, we have found that most of the existing methods are unable to achieve both supervised and contrastive unlearnability, which poses risks to data protection. Different from recent methods based on contrastive error minimization, we employ contrastive-like data augmentations in supervised error minimization or maximization frameworks to obtain attacks effective for both SL and CL. Our proposed AUE and AAP attacks achieve state-of-the-art worst-case unlearnability across SL and CL algorithms with less computation consumption, showcasing prospects in real-world applications.

Unlearnable example attacks are data poisoning attacks aiming to degrade the clean test accuracy of deep learning by adding imperceptible perturbations to the training samples, which can be formulated as a bi-level optimization problem. However, directly solving this optimization problem is intractable for deep neural networks. In this paper, we investigate unlearnable example attacks from a game-theoretic perspective, by formulating the attack as a nonzero sum Stackelberg game. First, the existence of game equilibria is proved under the normal setting and the adversarial training setting. It is shown that the game equilibrium gives the most powerful poison attack in that the victim has the lowest test accuracy among all networks within the same hypothesis space, when certain loss functions are used. Second, we propose a novel attack method, called the Game Unlearnable Example (GUE), which has three main gradients. (1) The poisons are obtained by directly solving the equilibrium of the Stackelberg game with a first-order algorithm. (2) We employ an autoencoder-like generative network model as the poison attacker. (3) A novel payoff function is introduced to evaluate the performance of the poison. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that GUE can effectively poison the model in various scenarios. Furthermore, the GUE still works by using a relatively small percentage of the training data to train the generator, and the poison generator can generalize to unseen data well. The proof of information inequalities and identities under linear constraints on the information measures is an important problem in information theory. For this purpose, ITIP and other variant algorithms have been developed and implemented, which are all based on solving a linear program (LP). In this paper, we develop a method with symbolic computation. Compared with the known methods, our approach can completely avoids the use of linear programming which may cause numerical errors. Stability analysis is an essential aspect of studying the generalization ability of deep learning, as it involves deriving generalization bounds for stochastic gradient descent-based training algorithms. Adversarial training is the most widely used defense against adversarial example attacks. However, previous generalization bounds for adversarial training have not included information regarding the data distribution. In this paper, we fill this gap by providing generalization bounds for stochastic gradient descent-based adversarial training that incorporate data distribution information. We utilize the concepts of on-average stability and high-order approximate Lipschitz conditions to examine how changes in data distribution and adversarial budget can affect robust generalization gaps. Our derived generalization bounds for both convex and non-convex losses are at least as good as the uniform stability-based counterparts which do not include data distribution information. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate how distribution shifts from data poisoning attacks can impact robust generalization.

Privacy preserving has become increasingly critical with the emergence of social media. Unlearnable examples have been proposed to avoid leaking personal information on the Internet by degrading generalization abilities of deep learning models. However, our study reveals that unlearnable examples are easily detectable. We provide theoretical results on linear separability of certain unlearnable poisoned dataset and simple network based detection methods that can identify all existing unlearnable examples, as demonstrated by extensive experiments. Detectability of unlearnable examples with simple networks motivates us to design a novel defense method. We propose using stronger data augmentations coupled with adversarial noises generated by simple networks, to degrade the detectability and thus provide effective defense against unlearnable examples with a lower cost. Adversarial training with large budgets is a widely-used defense method on unlearnable examples. Invariance to spatial transformations such as translations and rotations is a desirable property and a basic design principle for classification neural networks. However, the commonly used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are actually very sensitive to even small translations. There exist vast works to achieve exact or approximate transformation invariance by designing transformation-invariant models or assessing the transformations. These works usually make changes to the standard CNNs and harm the performance on standard datasets. In this paper, rather than modifying the classifier, we propose a pre-classifier restorer to recover translated (or even rotated) inputs to the original ones which will be fed into any classifier for the same dataset. The restorer is based on a theoretical result which gives a sufficient and necessary condition for an affine operator to be translational equivariant on a tensor space.

Chiral light-matter interactions supported by topological edge modes at the interface of valley photonic crystals provide a robust method to implement the unidirectional spin transfer. The valley topological photonic crystals possess a pair of counterpropagating edge modes. The edge modes are robust against the sharp bend of $60^{\circ}$ and $120^{\circ}$, which can form a resonator with whispering gallery modes. Here, we demonstrate the asymmetric emission of chiral coupling from single quantum dots in a topological resonator by tuning the coupling between a quantum emitter and a resonator mode. Under a magnetic field in Faraday configuration, the exciton state from a single quantum dot splits into two exciton spin states with opposite circularly polarized emissions due to Zeeman effect. Two branches of the quantum dot emissions couple to a resonator mode in different degrees, resulting in an asymmetric chiral emission. Without the demanding of site-control of quantum emitters for chiral quantum optics, an extra degree of freedom to tune the chiral contrast with a topological resonator could be useful for the development of on-chip integrated photonic circuits., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We report the slow-light enhanced spin-resolved in-plane emission from a single quantum dot (QD) in a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW). The slow light dispersions in PCWs are designed to match the emission wavelengths of single QDs. The resonance between two spin states emitted from a single QD and a slow light mode of a waveguide is investigated under a magnetic field with Faraday configuration. Two spin states of a single QD experience different degrees of enhancement as their emission wavelengths are shifted by combining diamagnetic and Zeeman effects with an optical excitation power control. A circular polarization degree up to 0.81 is achieved by changing the off-resonant excitation power. Strongly polarized photon emission enhanced by a slow light mode shows great potential to attain controllable spin-resolved photon sources for integrated optical quantum networks on chip., Comment: 7 pages,5 figures

3D deep learning models are shown to be as vulnerable to adversarial examples as 2D models. However, existing attack methods are still far from stealthy and suffer from severe performance degradation in the physical world. Although 3D data is highly structured, it is difficult to bound the perturbations with simple metrics in the Euclidean space. In this paper, we propose a novel $\epsilon$-isometric ($\epsilon$-ISO) attack to generate natural and robust 3D adversarial examples in the physical world by considering the geometric properties of 3D objects and the invariance to physical transformations. For naturalness, we constrain the adversarial example to be $\epsilon$-isometric to the original one by adopting the Gaussian curvature as a surrogate metric guaranteed by a theoretical analysis. For invariance to physical transformations, we propose a maxima over transformation (MaxOT) method that actively searches for the most harmful transformations rather than random ones to make the generated adversarial example more robust in the physical world. Experiments on typical point cloud recognition models validate that our approach can significantly improve the attack success rate and naturalness of the generated 3D adversarial examples than the state-of-the-art attack methods., Comment: NeurIPS 2022

Single charge control of localized excitons (LXs) in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is crucial for potential applications in quantum information processing and storage. However, traditional electrostatic doping method with applying metallic gates onto TMDCs may cause the inhomogeneous charge distribution, optical quench, and energy loss. Here, by locally controlling the ferroelectric polarization of the ferroelectric thin film BiFeO3 (BFO) with a scanning probe, we can deterministically manipulate the doping type of monolayer WSe2 to achieve the p-type and n-type doping. This nonvolatile approach can maintain the doping type and hold the localized excitonic charges for a long time without applied voltage. Our work demonstrated that ferroelectric polarization of BFO can control the charges of LXs effectively. Neutral and charged LXs have been observed in different ferroelectric polarization regions, confirmed by magnetic optical measurement. Highly circular polarization degree about 90 % of the photon emission from these quantum emitters have been achieved in high magnetic fields. An input- and output-sensitive GCD algorithm for multi-variate polynomials over finite fields is proposed by combining the modular method with the Ben-Or/Tiwari sparse interpolation. The bit complexity of the algorithm is given and is sensitive to the sparse representation, while for previous sparse GCD algorithms, the complexities were given only in some special cases. It is shown that the new algorithm is superior both in theory and in practice comparing with existing GCD algorithms: the complexity in the degree is decreased from quadratic to linear and the running times are decreased by 1-3 orders of magnitude in various benchmarks.

Adversarial deep learning is to train robust DNNs against adversarial attacks, which is one of the major research focuses of deep learning. Game theory has been used to answer some of the basic questions about adversarial deep learning such as the existence of a classifier with optimal robustness and the existence of optimal adversarial samples for a given class of classifiers. In most previous work, adversarial deep learning was formulated as a simultaneous game and the strategy spaces are assumed to be certain probability distributions in order for the Nash equilibrium to exist. But, this assumption is not applicable to the practical situation. In this paper, we give answers to these basic questions for the practical case where the classifiers are DNNs with a given structure, by formulating the adversarial deep learning as sequential games. The existence of Stackelberg equilibria for these games are proved. Furthermore, it is shown that the equilibrium DNN has the largest adversarial accuracy among all DNNs with the same structure, when Carlini-Wagner's margin loss is used. Trade-off between robustness and accuracy in adversarial deep learning is also studied from game theoretical aspect.

Based on the observation that $\mathbb{Q}^{(p-1) \times (p-1)}$ is isomorphic to a quotient skew polynomial ring, we propose a new method for $(p-1)\times (p-1)$ matrix multiplication over $\mathbb{Q}$, where $p$ is a prime number. The main feature of our method is the acceleration for matrix multiplication if the product is skew-sparse. Based on the new method, we design a deterministic algorithm with complexity $O(T^{\omega-2} p^2)$, where $T\le p-1$ is a parameter determined by the skew-sparsity of input matrices and $\omega$ is the asymptotic exponent of matrix multiplication. Moreover, by introducing randomness, we also propose a probabilistic algorithm with complexity $O^\thicksim(t^{\omega-2}p^2+p^2\log\frac{1}{\nu})$, where $t\le p-1$ is the skew-sparsity of the product and $\nu$ is the probability parameter.

In this paper, a new parameter perturbation attack on DNNs, called adversarial parameter attack, is proposed, in which small perturbations to the parameters of the DNN are made such that the accuracy of the attacked DNN does not decrease much, but its robustness becomes much lower. The adversarial parameter attack is stronger than previous parameter perturbation attacks in that the attack is more difficult to be recognized by users and the attacked DNN gives a wrong label for any modified sample input with high probability. The existence of adversarial parameters is proved. For a DNN $F_{\Theta}$ with the parameter set $\Theta$ satisfying certain conditions, it is shown that if the depth of the DNN is sufficiently large, then there exists an adversarial parameter set $\Theta_a$ for $\Theta$ such that the accuracy of $F_{\Theta_a}$ is equal to that of $F_{\Theta}$, but the robustness measure of $F_{\Theta_a}$ is smaller than any given bound. An effective training algorithm is given to compute adversarial parameters and numerical experiments are used to demonstrate that the algorithms are effective to produce high quality adversarial parameters.

Strong exciton-plasmon interaction between the layered two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors and gap plasmons shows a great potential to implement cavity quantum-electrodynamics in ambient condition. However, achieving a robust plasmon-exciton coupling with nanocavity is still very challenging, because the layer area is usually small with conventional approaches. Here, we report on a robust strong exciton-plasmon coupling between the gap mode of bowtie and the excitons in MoS$_2$ layers with gold-assisted mechanical exfoliation and the nondestructive wet transfer techniques for large-area layer. Benefiting from the ultrasmall mode volume and strong in-plane field, the estimated effective exciton number contributing to the coupling is largely reduced. With a corrected exciton transition dipole moment, the exciton numbers are extracted with 40 for the case of monolayer and 48 for 8 layers. Proving linear inequalities and identities of Shannon's information measures, possibly with linear constraints on the information measures, is an important problem in information theory. For this purpose, ITIP and other variant algorithms have been developed and implemented, which are all based on solving a linear program (LP). In particular, an identity $f = 0$ is verified by solving two LPs, one for $f \ge 0$ and one for $f \le 0$. In this paper, we develop a set of algorithms that can be implemented by symbolic computation. Based on these algorithms, procedures for verifying linear information inequalities and identities are devised. Compared with LP-based algorithms, our procedures can produce analytical proofs that are both human-verifiable and free of numerical errors. Our procedures are also more efficient computationally. For constrained inequalities, by taking advantage of the algebraic structure of the problem, the size of the LP that needs to be solved can be significantly reduced. For identities, instead of solving two LPs, the identity can be verified directly with very little computation.
