The aim of this paper is to present the agricultural production of Serbia in the conditions of its adjustment to the requirements of the EU, and in this paper, it will be observed many times. First, Serbia's agriculture must adapt to EU standards in order to place its products on the European market and be competitive. Secondly, competitiveness in the EU market is most easily achieved and maintained when farmers act together, with their form of organization and work based on modern standards. Thirdly, the authors believe that it would be easier for our farmers to market their products if they were produced in compliance with the requirements and principles of environmentally friendly production. The production of such food is becoming more and more represented on the world market and could be an export opportunity for our farmers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the paper is to consider and analyze the impact of subsidies levels and other economic and general factors on the farmers' decision to insure their crops. The paper applies the model of logistic regression in order to determine the statistically significant influence of certain factors on the decision of farms. The subject of the research is general and economic data from agricultural holdings in the FADN sample in Serbia for 2018. The sample includes farms that deal with specialist field crops, specialist grazing livestock and mixed crops-livestock production. The survey was conducted on a sample of 819 households, of which 99 households reported insurance costs (12.1%). The results of the research show that with higher subsidy level the probability that farms will insure their production reduces. On the other hand, with an increase of economic size and farm net value added per annual working unit the probability that farms will be insured also increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Different association forms of agricultural producers (producer groups, cooperative societies and clusters) were considered in this paper, as well as the status of the Republic of Serbia and the town of Smederevo as a model in this field were analyzed. The authors pointed out to necessity of joining of interest in agriculture, which provides series of advantages to agricultural holdings, first of all, competitiveness in agro-food supply chain, as well as adding a new value in the value chain of agricultural products. The answer to the question what forms of association are the most adequate for agricultural producers of a certain town/region has to be given by producers perceiving numerous factors (which are the association goals, who associates oneself with who, etc.), as well as advantages and imperfections of every form of association. In the structure of agricultural production in the Republic of Serbia, crop production is dominant, while the share of vegetables in crop production is small (about 3.5%). According to the research conducted by the Institute for the Application of Science in Agriculture during 2015-2019, one of the most profitable vegetable production is pepper production. The aim of this paper is to investigate the financial aspects of pepper (Capsicum annuum L) production as one of the most common vegetable crop in the Republic of Serbia, and to assess its economic viability. The following methods were used: survey, comparison, desk research, gross margin calculation and sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis showed that in addition to the yield, the price also has a great influence on the amount of the gross margin. The price risk would be reduced if there were "contracted agricultural production", which would improve the profitability and sustainability of pepper production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate factors have an impact on plant life cycle, yield, productivity, economy and profitability of agricultural production. There are not a lot of studies on understanding of influence of climate factors variation on maize yield in agro-ecological conditions of Serbia. The aim of this paper is analysis of variation of climatic factors over a long-time period, as well as assessment of impact of the examined climate parameters on maize yield in two localities in the Republic of Serbia. For the analysis of climatic factors (temperature, precipitation, sunshine, humidity) in the region of Central Serbia and Vojvodina, the data of meteorological stations Kragujevac and Sombor during two thirty-year periods (1961–1990 and 1991–2020) were used. In order to determine the existence and strength of the relationship between the observed climatic factors and maize yield, a correlation analysis of these indicators for the period 2005–2020 years, was performed. In the period 1991–2020, the average values of temperature were annually increased for 0.046 °C in Kragujevac and for 0.05 °C in Sombor, and in the same period the average value of sunshine on an annual level was increased for 1.3 h in Kragujevac and for 5.01 h in Sombor, 2020 in comparison to average values in period of 1961–1990. The humidity was decline annually for 1.3 in Kragujevac and for 3.4 in Sombor in period 1991–2020 in comparison to average humidity in period of 1961–1990. The results of the correlation analysis showed that the maize yield was significantly lower in the years with expressed high temperatures and precipitation deficit. Based on these studies, established effect of climate change on maize yield and that this demand developing adaptation agricultural practice through creating maize hybrids and varieties with greater adaptability and improvement of agrotechnic measure. This paper is a result of many years of field and laboratory research of the soils in Pčinja river basin, North Macedonia, spread out on 237.640,71 ha ranging from 191 to 1664 m above the sea level in order to gain a better understanding of the productive capacities of the soils and measures for their improvement. The catchment area of Pčinja River is a spatial area that extends in two states in the of the Republic of North Macedonia and the part of the Republic of Serbia, whose boundaries are naturally clearly defined. Soil samples were taken by spade and one composite sample was prepared for each sampling site, each containing about 3 kg of soil. Before sieving the samples were air dried. In laboratory, the following analyses have been carried out on the soil samples: hygroscopic moisture, mechanical composition, pH of the soil solution, humus content and total nitrogen, content of carbonates. The mechanical composition and chemical properties of the soils have been determined by standard methods. This area is very heterogeneous, with numerous relief forms, with different expositions and inclinations, and with great differences of altitude. Additionally, there are several geological formations of a very heterogeneous petrographic-mineralogical composition and climate-vegetation zones. Long-term effects of human involvement should also be noted. The vast diversity of the factors required for soil formation in this area is the reason for the formation of many different soil types as well as the lower taxonomic units. These types of soils are characterized by different properties (chemical, physical, and physical-mechanical, productive). Therefore, they have varied effects on agricultural production. There are 9 different soil types and 18 complexes of more than two land types distributed in the Pčinja River basin together with a considerable amount of subtypes, varieties and forms. The most represented with the largest area are: Vertisol, Fluvisol, Fluvisol (Colluvial Soils) and Cambisol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agriculture is a pillar of Serbia's economic development. Consequently, this paper provides an overview and analysis of the status of farms in Serbia, with a special focus on finding factors influencing the sustainable development of small-scale family farms. To facilitate simpler and more precise problem-solving and decision-making processes for improving the farms' operations, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model is used in this paper. This model is applied to the selection of key economic determinants for small farms' viability, illustrated through the results of the authors' own survey of 550 small farms in Serbia, which refers to the economic, social and environmental aspects of small farms' operation. By applying the criteria for selecting key economic indicators of a small farm, the multi-criteria assessment results can be utilised to inform more effective business and policy decisions directed at improving the operation of small-scale family farms. The survey results show that the best-ranked determinants for the viability of small farms in Serbia are first, the price of agricultural products, and next, wellstructured agricultural product distribution channels. The aim of the paper is to provide insights into the lending against crop receipts mechanism. Crop receipts emerged as promising financial instruments creating an additional type of collateral for agricultural producers that pledge their future agricultural production in order to finance ongoing production activities. At the same time, they offer an alternative investment opportunity to banks through the creation of a new asset class. European Bank for Reconstruction and Development supported Serbia in establishing a crop receipt system with the aim to serve as a pilot project for Europe. This is the first analysis of the crop receipts system in Serbia. The methodology applied consists of interviews with bank representatives, extensive literature research, descriptive statistics and comparative analyses. Results are indicating that the main shortcomings in the crop receipts system include the lack of specialised shareholders' knowledge, the absence of subsidization of interest rates on loans against crop receipts followed by the lack of appropriate Central bank policy, standardization and securitization. The main idea in this paper was to investigate how agriculture and processing sectors are connected through commercial activity, and how they influence municipal economic development in Serbia. This was examined through the influence of relevant non-price structural factors related to agricultural and processing sector on the ratio between agricultural product procurement and overall agricultural production. The focus was placed on agricultural investments and subsidies. A multi regression model was developed based on hard data provided by SORS and SBRE on a municipal level in Serbia. The analysis confirmed the relation between agricultural commercial activity and municipal level of economic development. In addition, important findings concerning municipal investment and agricultural subsidies allocation have been provided as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural advisory includes coordination between people, modern technology and natural conditions. Since in the conditions of domination of small family farms, the agricultural advisory service along with agricultural cooperatives represents one of the two hubs of the agricultural development of Serbia, the aim of this paper is to determine, on the basis of analysis of the current development and present performance of the agricultural advisory service, the need to provide new forms of advisory services. The successful organization and practical functioning of the agricultural advisory service, especially in unstable economic conditions, is essential for achieving the development goals of Serbia's agriculture. There are already many activities of the advisory service, but the aim of this paper is to analyze the extent to which the agricultural advisory service in Kragujevac influenced the development of agricultural production in the surrounding villages. The obtained results indicate that the agricultural advisory service in Kragujevac has very little influence on the development of agricultural production in the surrounding villages. Agricultural production is a Serbian main economic sector, presenting a base for the food industry. By analysing the public available data of the agriculture sector, applying a newly developed business model it is possible to assess the current situation and to realize the relation between variables, which can also be used for prediction of future trends in agricultural production and food industry. Within this paper an attempt was made to develop a novel artificial neural network model for better understanding the relation between the observed parameters and to estimate the efficiency in sustainability achievement and sector potential The well-known Cobb- Douglas production model was compared to the newly developed model. The presented models could be used to achieve the transformation towards a circular bioeconomy, by developing the national strategies for sustainable agricultural production, with the aim of better utilization of resources and reduction of wastes. Raspberry production has a long tradition in the Republic of Serbia, and the raspberry is the most economically important berry crop. According to data for the period from 2006 to 2016, the Republic of Serbia was ranked fourth in the world in the production of this fruit crop. The paper presents an analysis of raspberry production in the Republic of Serbia using statistical data from the previous years, which were compared with 2016 data. For comparison and analysis, we used the data presented on the FAOSTAT statistical database website and the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS) website. The analysis of the available data for the period 2006-2016 shows that the total yield of raspberries in this period varied, as did yield in tonnes per hectare, which ranged from 5.3 to 6 tonnes, depending on year. A sudden decrease in total yield in 2012 and in all subsequent years until 2016 was also observed. This was caused by a sudden reduction in the area under raspberries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainable development is a concept which has not yet been uniquely defined at the international level. As a result, it is difficult to define the indicators which could "measure" the achievement of sustainability. The paper deals with organic agriculture as a commonly used indicator of sustainable agricultural development. The organic farming in Serbia is legally a well-regulated area, but still not developed to the necessary and possible extent. Following the practice of the most developed countries, the area under organic production is distinguished as one of the indicators in the National List of Indicators for Sustainable Development of the Republic of Serbia. Nowadays, organic farming occupies only about 0.45% of total UAA in Serbia (approx 15,000 ha), which is relatively low in comparison with the EU countries. Therefore, the development of Serbian agriculture cannot be assessed as sustainable. Although the authors of this paper support the use of organic agriculture as an indicator of agricultural sustainability, they endorse it in conjunction with other indicators in the matter, whenever possible. In light of the numerous controversies in terms of food quality and safety, organic farming, as a distinctive sector of agricultural production is significantly gaining in importance at a global level. Not only that organic farming is in harmony with the natural processes and principles, it is also sustainable - which is certainly not the case with the conventional agricultural practices and GMO foods production. Despite their numerous benefits, organic products are under-represented in the global market, primarily due to economic reasons. This paper identifies key factors that determine the development of the organic farming sector in Serbia. In this respect, the aim of the paper is to point to the development opportunities of organic agriculture based on the analysis of available resources and by taking into account both internal and external challenges encountered in this particular sector. The fact is that there are significant potentials for development of the organic agri-food sector in the Republic of Serbia, however, these potentials are still insufficiently exploited. Therefore, it is necessary to create a more favorable environment for the future development of this sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Central and Eastern Europe, climate changes have been predicted (Trnka et al., 2009). These changes are expected to have a great impact on field crops during the spring-summer growing season. The aim of this paper is to estimate the impact of climate change on the main field crops (maize and soybean) in the Republic of Serbia. The AquaCrop model was used as a tool to quantify climate change impact on yield and net irrigation using results from the ECHAM climate model (SRES A2 scenario for the 2041-2070 and 2071-2100 periods) and data from two experimental fields located in the southern part of the Pannonian lowland. The analyzed results for the 2041-2070 and 2071-2100 periods showed an increase in maize (1 and 1.3 t/ha) and soybean (1.9 and 2.8 t/ha) yields and a very significant increase in the net irrigation of 151.4 and 183.1 mm in maize production and 179.3 and 227.3 mm in soybean production under climate change conditions compared to the 1961-1990 period. Additionally, irrigation water use efficiency was calculated to estimate the importance of irrigation, because crop production is usually conducted under rainfed conditions. It was concluded that maize and soybean production should benefit from climate changes but with higher water quantities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The subject of the research of this paper is the realized value of agricultural production, which significantly contributes to the formation of gross value added. The share of gross value added of agriculture in total GVA is one of the most important indicators of the importance of agriculture in the economic structure. The goal of the research is to point out the adequacy of the size and contribution of the agricultural sector to the creation of gross value added, as well as the impact of individual branches on the formation of total gross value added, i.e. on overall economic development. The simple linear regression method was applied to examine the impact of GVA in agriculture on total GVA. The results of the analysis show that the movement of agriculture GVA has a statistically significant influence on the movement of total GVA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the efficient agricultural sector is one of the most important drivers of country's economic development, the main objective of this paper was to examine relative technical efficiency of agricultural production in 25 Serbian districts using two-stage data envelopment analysis. Results of this research indicate that the efficiency score values lie between 70% and 100%, therefore it can be concluded that the agricultural sector of Serbia performs at a high level of efficiency, with the average efficiency score of 90%. The lowland region of Vojvodina is characterized with the highest efficiency scores, while districts in the southeastern part of Serbia have the lowest efficiency score values. Furthermore, the Tobit regression model was applied that one may examine the drivers of technical efficiency scores. The results show the significance of agricultural training among farm managers, land irrigation and age of farm holders in altering agricultural efficiency among Serbian districts. The Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) system represents a source of data of a high reliability level that is suitable for carrying out economic analyzes in the field of agriculture. The FADN methodological framework enables the extrapolation of data on economic results obtained from a predefined sample of farms to the entire agricultural sector. In addition, it is also possible to compare the obtained results with relevant indicators from all EU member states. Standard results calculated at the level of the Republic of Serbia represent weighted average for farms, which show the state of the entire agricultural sector in Serbia. Only farms of economic size over 4,000 € make up the field of research of the implemented FADN system in Serbia (total population). The completed sample for 2016 was made up of 1,104 farms that exceeded the set threshold at the time of data collection. The field of research of the FADN system covers about 31.8% of the total number of farms, which had about 90% of the used agricultural area (UAA) and generated a dominant part of the agricultural production value. The paper presents the structural standard results achieved in 2016 at the level of two regions of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the comparison of these indicators with the same ones achieved in the EU member states [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural land is a good of general interest for the entire society. It is used for the production of agricultural and food products necessary for the survival of society, and therefore requires specific treatment. Also, the market valuation of natural resources must be on different basis compared to the application of the standard supply and demand model. In 2006, the Republic of Serbia adopted the Law on Agricultural Land, which regulates planning, protection, organization and use of agricultural land, as well as other important issues related to agricultural land. Under the political pressure and in interest of certain social groups, new legal measures were adopted in 2017. Namely, since September 1st 2017, foreign citizens have been able to purchase agricultural land on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, under certain conditions. The question is why the Republic of Serbia agreed to this step before joining the European Union. The paper analyzes the ownership structure, the plant production structure and the Serbian land market [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTERNET in agriculture ,AGRICULTURAL productivity ,ARABLE land ,PRECISION farming - Abstract
The application of smart technology in agriculture is a kind of third green revolution in the development of agricultural production. The authors believe that agricultural production must be organized in a modern way. The application of smart technology in agriculture represents the future of production. This attitude is quite acceptable if one takes into account that smart agriculture meets modern food production trends that require great efficiency in the use of all elements involved in production. It is precisely the efficiency of agriculture that is viewed through the achieved level of productivity, which is observed through the ratio of the number of employees and the volume of arable land, but also through the use of modern technologies used in production. In this sense, smart agriculture is a modern technology that can respond to current problems that exist on the world and are related to food production. The application of intelligent technology in agriculture is carried out through an Internet system through essential sensory networks through which applications are administered to various agricultural systems such as irrigation, fertilizing, spraying, etc. Climate change affects the change in agricultural production as well as food production, which certainly influences the transformation of the entire agriculture. Climate change, on the other hand, supports the development of smart precision agriculture, because precise agriculture can be adequately addressed. At the end of the paper, the authors gave results of research related to the knowledge and possibilities of applying smart technology in agriculture in the Republic of Serbia. The aim at the research is to gain insight into how many agricultural producers know about the benefits that smart technology provides in with production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HUMAN capital , *MILK yield , *AGRICULTURAL productivity , *FACTORS of production , *AGRICULTURAL development , *AGRICULTURAL technology , *MILK - Abstract
Over the past decade, a growing interest of consumers in the consumption of organic milk has been recognized, mostly because of its positive effect on human health, besides other various positive effects. The main goal of organic milk production is to bring agricultural production in close alignment with the requirements of a sustainable system. Human capital in organic farming is an important factor as it significantly influences production and financial results. As an important factor in the production, socio-economic characteristics of producers considerably determine possibilities of the future development of this system of production in a certain country. Focusing on the aspect of human capital, this paper examines the possibilities of the development of organic agricultural production in the Republic of Serbia. The research has been conducted on the territory of Serbia on individual farms which are certified for organic farming. Following the findings, the authors conclude that human capital in organic milk production of the Republic of Serbia does not represent a limiting factor in the future development of this system and that human capital in terms of learning and education, experience and expertise, innovation and creativity, and sources of knowledge has a positive relationship with the business performance. The comprehensive influence and importance of agricultural production on the economy of the Republic of Serbia and its connection with the defense system represent an interesting research topic. This topic has to be researched carefully due to the connection, mutual influence, and mutual intertwining of commodity reserves of food products, the economic system, the defense system, and the army as one of its components, with social and political factors, both internal and external. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, global increases in food prices have been noticeable. This problem arose with the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. It should be understood that the commodity reserve system of food products is a subsystem within a series of higher subsystems and systems, and that this is where its complexity and comprehensiveness lie. BEEKEEPING ,SUSTAINABLE development ,AGRICULTURAL productivity ,AGRICULTURAL development ,POLLINATION by bees - Abstract
Beekeeping is one of the most important activities in agricultural production due to the role of honey bees in pollination of agricultural crops. Pollination of crops, but also wild flora, is an ecosystem service provided mainly by honey bees and it is absolutely necessary for maintenance of ecosystem functioning. Besides importance of honey bees in producing quality crops, bees also create honey surpluses which are harvested and can be used as food or for some other purposes by humans. Beekeeping is one of the rare production activities that do not have any negative effect of quality of the environment and actually, this activity enables sustainable development of every natural area. Main goal of this paper will be to analyze, using existing data published in relevant publications, state and possible paths of beekeeping development in the Danube Region, in Serbia. Also, author will research the role of beekeeping activity in reference to three main principles of the sustainable development of Danube region: ecological, social and economical sustainable development. ORGANIC farming ,AGRICULTURAL productivity ,FOOD production ,INTERNATIONAL markets - Abstract
The primary goal of this paper is to explore the reasons and motives that influenced the farmers to opt for organic production, then to identify the factors limiting growth of such production and to consider the possibility of improving the organic production in the Republic of Serbia. The test method based on a questionnaire was used to obtain information on the producers' opinions and attitudes. There are significant potentials for organic production in the Republic of Serbia. The primary motive for engaging in organic farming is that the producers want to manufacture safe and healthy food primarily for themselves and for their family members. The purchase of organic seeds and seedlings, as well as of plant protection material and organic fertilizers, is said to be the biggest problem. There are still many other problems, such as a complicated procedure for obtaining certificates of organic production, poorly drafted legislation, the high cost of certification and analyses, low incentives from the government, but also the still low consumer awareness about the importance of organic food. The most important measure for the expansion of organic farming is an increase in government incentives in the form of subsidies or soft loans. It is necessary for the producers to team up into organic food associations in order to jointly meet the demand for organic products in the domestic and international markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
