Planktonic animals drifting or floating in the sea have small body sizes and weights from hundreds to thousands of milligrams, and are primarily the food for other zooplankton and macrofauna: fish, cephalopods, seabirds and marine mammals, and also the larval pool of many benthic invertebrates. This paper describes a unique dataset of zooplankton collected from 1984 to 2013 in the North Pacific (the Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, Sea of Japan and adjacent Pacific Ocean waters), one of the most productive and economically important regions of the world's oceans using a Juday net made of kapron sieve No. 49 (0.168 mm mesh) with a 0.1 m2 opening. The information in this dataset has already been used to quantify the inventory of marine biological resources and assess the waters of the Russian Far Eastern seas and adjacent Pacific Ocean. In 2016, five tabular reference books were printed in Russian in limited numbers containing the species composition, occurrence (number and percentage of samples), abundance and biomass (in individuals per cubic meter, milligrams per cubic meter) of zooplankton in the surveyed area. The data are grouped by species, developmental stages, size fractions (animal length of 0.6-1.2 mm "fine/small," 1.2-3.2 mm "medium" and >3.2 mm "large"), standard regions (their total area is more than 6 million km2), vertical layers of water, light and dark time of the day, four seasons of the year and multiyear periods, in which there were considerable changes in the biota of the region caused by global climate and oceanographic factors. This information has recently been verified, corrected, translated into English, transformed from text to digital format, and supplemented by GIS with maps of the standard regions by which data were aggregated using morphometric parameters (volume of water in cubic kilometers in the region, in its epipelagic 0-200 m, and upper epipelagic 0-50 m water layers, occupied area in square kilometers, longitude and latitude of their centroids in decimal degrees) to increase their availability to the scientific community worldwide. The data enable the evaluation of the total plankton stock of the Russian Far Eastern seas in the North Pacific (in trillions of specimens and thousands of tons), recalculate the volumetric characteristics of density into areal characteristics (in billions of specimens per square kilometer or tons per square kilometer), and, using previously published tables on calorific value and chemical composition of zooplankton, obtain their energy characteristics. Such data are crucial for the proper management of marine resources, aquaculture development, nature conservation, and the assessment of the anthropogenic impact on nature. The presented metadata provide a detailed description of how this unique dataset was created, sources and volume of gathered information, its benefits and drawbacks, some results on the quantitative inventory of marine biological resources and assessment of waters in the North Pacific, and future prospects for the use of this type of dataset in applied and fundamental research. Discriminating the provenance of fine-grained sediments is crucial for reconstructing paleogeography, sedimentary processes, and paleoclimate. In this paper, we investigate the South Bohai Coast to better understand source-to-sink systems in East Asia. This region is influenced by both distant sources such as the large-scale Yellow River and small local river sources flowing from the Luzhong Mountain area. Two Holocene sedimentary cores, dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C chronology, were used to investigate the provenance of the fine-grained sediments over the last 7 kyrs. Clay mineralogy and relevant non-linear modeling were employed for provenance discrimination. The results show that the fine-grained sediments along the South Bohai Coast were mainly derived from the Yellow River during the periods of 7.0–5.4 ka and 4.5–2.6 ka, respectively, while the input from the Luzhong Mountain-derived rivers was greater during 5.4–4.5 ka and 2.6–0.2 ka, respectively. Fluvial activities and marine-terrestrial interaction driven by climate factors such as East Asian winter monsoon, temperature, and precipitation in river basins, dominantly influenced the provenance of fine-grained sediments from 7.0 to 2.6 ka. Anthropogenic impact on provenance increased after 2.6 ka. The chronology of the two cores showed extremely rapid sedimentation rate transitions at 5.2 ka and 1.5 ka, respectively, very likely attributed to anthropogenic-induced rapid progradation. Trace metals from natural and anthropogenic sources impact the atmospheric environment and enter the soil through dry and wet atmospheric deposition, ultimately affecting human health. In this study, we established an emission inventory of Pb, As, Cr, and Cd in East Asia (80° E–140° E, 15° N–50° N) for the year 2017, including dust and anthropogenic sources from both land and marine. We modified the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model to provide gridded data on concentrations, as well as dry and wet atmospheric deposition fluxes of metals, with a focus on mainland China. The emissions of Pb, As, Cr, and Cd in East Asia were 19,253, 3415, 3332, and 9379 tons, respectively, in 2017, with 55%, 69%, 25%, and 58% distributed in the fine mode. The spatial distribution of atmospheric concentrations and dry deposition of trace metals was similar to that of emissions, while the spatial distribution of precipitation-related wet deposition was further east and greater in the south than in the north. In mainland China, the average bulk-deposition fluxes of Pb, As, Cr, and Cd were 1036.5, 170.3, 465.9, and 185.0 μg·m−2·year−1, respectively. Key Points: The activated cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) into cloud droplets were nearly equally low (<300 cm−3) in inland areas with little anthropogenic emissionsAnthropogenic emissions were responsible to the greatly elevated concentrations of CCN over and downwind of urban agglomerationThe enhanced CCN increased cloud depth for rain initiation up to 4 km, further delayed and suppressed the precipitation over the most polluted regions The recently developed method for retrieving cloud drop concentrations (Nd), cloud base updraft, and supersaturation made it possible to map these properties over East Asia. It was done for the summers of 2013 to 2019, in conjunction to low level wind direction. The background CCN concentrations were nearly equally low (<300 cm−3) over minimally perturbed air masses to the south and east of the densely populated areas of China, over ocean, and to the north over northern China, Mongolia, and southern Siberia. This stood in large contrast to large concentrations of activated CCN into cloud droplets reaching up to 2,000 cm−3 over and downwind of the densely populated regions over East Asia. Because cloud depth for rain initiation (Dc) increased linearly with CCN concentrations, the enhanced CCN increased Dc from a background of <1 km over ocean and ~2 km to the north of China to Dc > 4 km over the most polluted regions. Plain Language Summary: Cloud condensation nuclei (CCNs) are a subset of hygroscopic aerosol particles that nucleate water drops at supersaturations less than 1%, which is a research medium for studying aerosol‐cloud‐precipitation interaction. More CCN will lead the smaller the drops and the greater the liquid water content, the greater the cloud albedo, but their influence on cloud growth and on precipitation formation is still unclear. Because of the uncertainty in predicting the nucleation ability of atmospheric particles, the empirical method is usually used to measure the concentration of particles as CCN at various specified supersaturation in limited space and time. However, satellites can deliver the necessary global coverage for cloud observations with sufficient quality and long‐time frame, particularly in the ocean and inaccessible areas. This study first time uses a new method to acquire the distribution of CCN concentration of cloud base in East Asia. We use the satellite‐retrieved CCN concentrations to represent the actually activated CCN into cloud droplets. Our results show that the background CCN concentrations are nearly equally low (<300 cm−3) over northern China, Mongolia, and southern Siberia but high concentrations of activated CCN (>2,000 cm−3) over and downwind of urban agglomeration. Aerosol particles originated from anthropogenic emissions, volcanic eruptions, biomass burning, and fossil combustion emissions, and their radiative effect is one of the most uncertain factors in climate change. Meanwhile, aerosol particles in fine particle size could also cause irreversible effects on the human respiratory system. This study attempted to analyse the spatial and temporal variations of global aerosol optical depth (AOD, 550 nm) during 1980–2018 using MERRA-2 aerosol reanalysis products and to investigate the effects of natural/anthropogenic emissions of different types of aerosols on AOD values. The results show that the global annual mean AOD values kept high levels with significant fluctuations during 1980–1995 and showed a consistent decreasing and less volatile trend after 1995. Spatially, the AOD values are relatively higher in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in North Africa (0.329), Northern India (0.235), and Eastern China (0.347), because of the intensive natural/anthropogenic aerosol emissions there. The sulphate-based aerosols emitted by biomass burning and anthropogenic emissions are the main types of aerosols worldwide, especially in densely populated and industrialized regions such as East Asia and Europe. Dust aerosols are also the main aerosol type in desert areas. For example, the AOD and AODP values for the Sahara Desert are 0.3178 and 75.32%, respectively. Both black carbon aerosols (BC) and organic carbon aerosols (OC) are primary or secondary from carbon emissions of fossil fuels, biomass burning, and open burning. Thus, the regions with high BC and OC aerosol loadings are mainly located in densely populated or vegetated areas such as East Asia, South Asia, and Central Africa. Sea salt aerosols are mainly found in coastline areas along the warm current pathway. This study could help relevant researchers in the fields of atmospheric science, environmental protection, air pollution, and ecological environment to understand the global spatial–temporal variations and main driving factors of aerosol loadings.
