Ecosystems in arid regions with sandy substrates are vulnerable to various environmental challenges. Understanding the vegetation evolution of such regions over a long timescale and the possible drivers of change is important for optimizing ecological restoration. In this paper, we present multi-proxy data to understand Holocene vegetation dynamics and their drivers in the Horqin Sandy Land in northern China. Phytoliths are used to reconstruct vegetation; grain size and magnetic susceptibility are used to reconstruct the climate; and sedimentary charcoal contents and the numbers of regional archaeological sites are used to reconstruct the fire activity and human activity intensity, respectively. Results indicate that the Horqin Sandy Land was covered mainly by grassland vegetation during the Holocene, and that the trajectory of vegetation evolution was as follows: sparse and species-poor Leymus chinensis grassland from 9300 to 6150 cal yr BP, relatively sparse and species-rich mesophytic herb grassland from 6150 to 2300 cal yr BP, and dense and species-rich L. chinensis grassland from 2300 to 250 cal yr BP. Climate change was the main driver of vegetation evolution, but fire and human activities also influenced the vegetation to varying degrees. Fire made the greatest contribution to the vegetation change during the 6150–2300 cal yr BP interval, and human activities contributed throughout the 8200–2300 cal yr BP interval. The evolution of plant species richness and the number of C 3 plants show a significant ∼1000-yr periodicity during 9300–4500 cal yr BP, which we speculate was caused by the effect of solar activity on East Asian monsoon intensity, which likely controlled the vegetation change on a millennial timescale. • The Holocene vegetation in Horqin Sandy Land is qualitatively reconstructed. • Climate dominated the vegetation evolution, while fire and human activity were additional influences. • The vegetation change shows a ∼ 1000-yr periodicity during 9300–4500 cal yr BP. • The vegetation change on a millennium cycle was likely driven by the solar activity. Whether or not large-scale vegetation restoration will lead to a decrease in regional terrestrial water storage is a controversial topic. This study employed the Geodetector model, in conjunction with observed and satellite hydro-meteorological data, to detect the changes in terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) and to identify the contributions of climate change and vegetation greening across China during the years 1982–2019. The results revealed that: (1) during the period of 1982–2019, TWSA showed a downward trend in about two thirds of the country, with significant declines in North China, southeast Tibet, and northwest Xinjiang, and an upward trend in the remaining third of the country, with significant increases mainly in the Qaidam Basin, the Yangtze River, and the Songhua River; (2) the positive correlation between normalized vegetation index (NDVI) and TWSA accounts for 48.64% of the total vegetation area across China. In addition, the response of vegetation greenness lags behind the TWSA and precipitation, and the lag time was shorter in arid and semi-arid regions dominated by grasslands, and longer in relatively humid regions dominated by forests and savannas; (3) furthermore, TWSAs decreased with the increase in NDVI and evapotranspiration (ET) in arid and semi-arid areas, and increased with the rise in NDVI and ET in the humid regions. The Geodetector model was used to detect the effects of climate, vegetation, and human factors on TWSA. It is worth mentioning that NDVI, precipitation, and ET were some of the main factors affecting TWSA. Therefore, it is essential to implement rational ecological engineering to mitigate climate change's negative effects and maintain water resources' sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions. • Both GPP and GPP max in Chinese grasslands showed increases at different space–time scales. • Trend analysis and breakpoint tests were used for the first time to monitor GPP change simultaneously in Chinese grasslands. • GPP max × CUP is a robust indicator to explain annual-scale variation in GPP. At the ecosystem level, Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) was defined as the organic compounds formed by plants that absorb atmospheric CO 2 through photosynthesis and sequester carbon in plant bodies. How to accurately assess the spatiotemporal evolution of ecosystem carbon indicators has become a critical issue to be addressed. Chinese grasslands are located in a typical arid and semi-arid climate zone and are sensitive to global changes, which will inevitably have serious impacts on the function and structure of Chinese grasslands. Based on this, our paper takes Chinese grassland ecosystems as the research area, and used multi-source GPP dataset from terrestrial ecosystem model simulations and remote sensing satellite observations to quantitatively analyze the spatiotemporal evolution patterns of GPP in Chinese grasslands over the past 40 years. We combined trend analysis and breakpoint test, and then to analyze the mechanism components of GPP space–time variability. The main results are as follows: (1) The model and remote sensing estimated GPP results showed that more than 80% of Chinese grasslands show a significant increasing trend over the past 40 years, with growth rates ranging from 0.68 to 3.13 g C/m−2 year−1. (2) GPP max also shows that more than 80% of Chinese grasslands are growing rapidly, with an overall growth rate of more than 0.1 g C/m−2 year−1 in each region. The overall long-term trends and interannual variability of multi-source GPP and GPP max are generally consistent, yet vegetation dynamics in local areas are still uncertain. (3) The breakpoint test showed that 'monotonically increasing' was the largest breakpoint type of GPP in Chinese grasslands (33.09%), and the direction of change of GPP in Chinese grasslands before and after the breakpoint was also increasing. (4) GPP max × CUP explained 91% of the temporal variability of annual-scale GPP in Chinese grasslands from a mechanistic view, and we found that the peak photosynthetic growth and the length of the phenological period synergistically controlled the interannual variability of GPP in Chinese grasslands. Under the scenario of rapid global change, our study accurately assessed the long-term dynamics of GPP and its mechanism-driven of grassland ecosystems in China, which is helpful for estimating and predicting the carbon budget of grassland ecosystems in China, and has important guiding significance for policy formulation to mitigate climate change. Climate change and human activities significantly affected environmental changes in drylands. However, the relative roles remain unclear regarding these factors' effects on environment changes in drylands. Herein, we analyzed vegetation change trends using remote-sensing datasets to determine the interactions of vegetation, climate, and anthropogenic activities in an arid region of China, Kubuqi Desert. Our study showed that 67.64% of the pixels of fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) increased in 2020 in comparison with those of 1986. The FVC exhibited a significant greening trend (0.0011/yr, p < 0.05) in 1986–2020 as a whole. This greening trend revealed two distinct periods separated by a turning point in 2001. There was no clear trend of FVC before 2001, and then there was a dramatically greening trend since 2001 in most regions of the study area. The increasing rate (0.0036/yr) in the later period was three times higher than the entire period. The accelerated increasing trend was due to the variable compound effects of climate and human activities. The correlation between FVC and precipitation was mainly positive, which outweighs the significantly negative correlation between vegetation and temperature. However, both climatic factors cannot well explain the trends of vegetation dynamics, implying a possible role for human activities. Generally, climate change and anthropogenic activities contributed 42.15% and 57.85% to the overall vegetation variations in 1986–2020. Specifically, the relative role of the two factors was vastly different in two distinct periods. Climate change led the dominant roles (58.68%) in the vegetation variations in 1986–2001, while anthropogenic activities dominated (86.79%) in driving vegetation recovery in the period after 2001. Due to the massive ecological conservation programs such as the Grain for Green Project launched in 2001, substantial deserts have been transformed into grasslands and forests. This analysis highlights the ecological policies largely responsible for vegetation restoration and provides references for ecological protection and sustainable development in eco-fragile ecosystems. Vegetation is an indicator of changes in the ecological environment and a key source of feedback on the impact of drought. In this work we selected northern China as the study area and used the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to assess the relationship between drought and vegetation dynamics at annual and seasonal scales for the period 1982–2015. The results indicated that annual drought showed a slight increase in northern China during this time, and it was mainly attributed to the intensified summer drought; the percentages of areas where significant drying, drying, wetting, and significant wetting occurred accounted for 3.30%, 53.36%, 40.39%, and 2.95%, respectively. Annual NDVI showed a highly significant (p < 0.01) upward trend in northern China, suggesting that vegetation there is greening. However, there was still a significant decrease in the NDVI trend in 13.65% of the study area, and forest accounted for the greatest area among the three land cover types studied. A positive correlation between annual SPEI and annual NDVI was found in most of northern China, and 18.66% of the study area (p < 0.05) were mainly distributed in the central-eastern part of Inner Mongolia, the central part of the Loess Plateau, and northwestern part of Xinjiang Province. Residual analysis found that the percentages of vegetation dynamics affected by human-induced degradation, human-induced improvement, and drought accounted for 13.91%, 47.91%, and 38.18%, respectively; however, 54.15% of the areas affected by drought were located in arid and semi-arid regions and that about 54.61% of those were grassland. Ecological responses to past climate change as determined from palaeorecords offer insights into responses that may accompany future climate change. In arid and semi‐arid lands, the interactions between regional vegetation and climate change are not yet well understood, partly due to a lack of suitable palaeovegetation proxies that can provide accurate and continuous tracers for past vegetation dynamics. To gain a better understanding of long‐term vegetation dynamics, this study employs a multiproxy approach applied to sand‐palaeosol sediments of northeastern China's Songnen grasslands. Phytolith analyses and data on the stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of organic matter are used to reconstruct palaeovegetation composition, namely, the changing abundance of C3 and C4 species, whereas a geochemical weathering index (Fed/Fet ratios) tracks past East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) intensity. The phytolith assemblages and indices and δ13C of the soil indicate that C4 species' abundance has been increasing in the Songnen grasslands since the mid‐Holocene, although C3 vegetation is still dominant. Statistically significant negative correlations between the δ13C data and Fet/Fed ratios suggest that continuous weakening of the EASM since the mid‐Holocene may be responsible for the 13C‐enrichment of the sediments in the Songnen grasslands. Field vegetation surveys, modern topsoil phytoliths and δ13C calibration data indicate that the expansion of C4 species since the mid‐Holocene is mainly due to their ability to cope with aridity when growing season temperature is not undergoing a significant decrease. Future precipitation decreases in arid and semi‐arid lands should make C4 species more competitive in the grasslands of northeastern China.
