Cheating behaviors have been construed as a continuing and somewhat vexing issue for academic institutions as they increasingly conduct educational processes online and impose metrics on instructional evaluation. Research, development, and implementation initiatives on cheating detection have gained new dimensions in the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) applications; they have also engendered special challenges in terms of their social, ethical, and cultural implications. An assortment of commercial cheating-detection systems have been injected into educational contexts with little input on the part of relevant stakeholders. This paper expands several specific cases of how systems for the detection of cheating have recently been implemented in higher education institutions in the US and UK. It investigates how such vehicles as wearable technologies, eye scanning, and keystroke capturing are being used to collect the data used for anti-cheating initiatives, often involving systems that have not gone through rigorous testing and evaluation for their validity and potential educational impacts. The paper discusses accountability- and policy-related issues concerning the outsourcing of cheating detection in institutional settings in the light of these emerging technological practices as well as student resistance against the systems involved. The cheating-detection practices can place students in a disempowered, asymmetrical position that is often at substantial variance with their cultural backgrounds.

Purpose: This purpose of this paper is to report on the development of an evidence-informed framework created to facilitate the formulation of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) academic integrity policy responses for English medium instruction (EMI) higher education, responding to both the bespoke challenges for the sector and longstanding calls to define and disseminate quality implementation good practice. Design/methodology/approach: A virtual nominal group technique engaged experts (n = 14) in idea generation, refinement and consensus building across asynchronous and synchronous stages. The resulting qualitative and quantitative data were analysed using thematic analysis and descriptive statistics, respectively. Findings: The GenAI Academic Integrity Policy Development Blueprint for EMI Tertiary Education is not a definitive mandate but represents a roadmap of inquiry for reflective deliberation as institutions chart their own courses in this complex terrain. Research limitations/implications: If repeated with varying expert panellists, findings may vary to a certain extent; thus, further research with a wider range of stakeholders may be necessary for additional validation. Practical implications: While grounded within the theoretical underpinnings of the field, the tool holds practical utility for stakeholders to develop bespoke policies and critically re-examine existing frameworks. Social implications: As texts produced by students using English as an additional language are at risk of being wrongly accused of GenAI-assisted plagiarism, owing to the limited efficacy of text classifiers such as Turnitin, the policy recommendations encapsulated in the blueprint aim to reduce potential bias and unfair treatment of students. Originality/value: The novel blueprint represents a step towards bridging concerning gaps in policy responses worldwide and aims to spark discussion and further much-needed scholarly exploration to this end.

While ChatGPT has recently become very popular, AI has a long history and philosophy. This paper intends to explore the promises and pitfalls of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) AI and potentially future technologies by adopting a speculative methodology. Speculative future narratives with a specific focus on educational contexts are provided in an attempt to identify emerging themes and discuss their implications for education in the 21st century. Affordances of (using) AI in Education (AIEd) and possible adverse effects are identified and discussed which emerge from the narratives. It is argued that now is the best of times to define human vs AI contribution to education because AI can accomplish more and more educational activities that used to be the prerogative of human educators. Therefore, it is imperative to rethink the respective roles of technology and human educators in education with a future-oriented mindset.

A descriptive bibliometric analysis of works on artificial intelligence (AI) in science education is provided in this article to help readers understand the state of the field's research at the time. This study's main objective is to give bibliometric data on publications regarding AI in science education printed in periodicals listed in the Scopus database between 2002 and 2023 end of May. The data gathered from publications scanned and published within the study's parameters was subjected to descriptive bibliometric analysis based on seven categories: number of articles and citations per year, countries with the most publications, most productive author, most significant affiliation, funding institutions, publication source and subject areas. Most of the papers were published between 2016 and 2022. The United States of America, United Kingdom, and China were the top-3 most productive nations, with the United States of America producing the most publications. The number of citations to the publications indexed in Scopus database increased in a progressive way and reached to maximum number in 2022 with 178 citations. Most productive author on this topic was Salles, P. with four publications. Moreover, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Memphis, and University of Southern California have the maximum number of publications as affiliations. The National Science Foundation was the leader funding institution in terms of number of publications produced. In addition, "Proceedings Frontiers in Education Conference Fie" have the highest number of publications by year as a publication source. Distribution of the publications by subject area was analyzed. The subject areas of the publications were computer sciences, social sciences, science education, technology and engineering education respectively. This study presents a vision for future research and provides a global perspective on AI in science education.

For over two decades now, the application of Citizen Science to Education has been evolving, and fundamental topics, such as the drivers of motivation to participate in Citizen Science projects, are still under discussion. Some recent developments, though, like the use of Artificial Intelligence to support data collection and validation, seem to point to a clear-cut divergence from the mainstream research path. The objective of this paper is to summarise the development trajectory of research on Citizen Science in Education so far, and then shed light on its future development, to help researchers direct their efforts towards the most promising open questions in this field. We achieved these objectives by using the lens of the Affordance-Actualisation theory and the Main Path Analysis method.

This is a conceptual paper that examines the origin and development of universities and their current role in global society. There has been an unprecedented and exponential growth of technology and artificial intelligence capabilities over the past ten years which is challenging current working practices and affecting all areas of society. The paper examines how this role may change to match the new demands placed on them by a digitally enabled society that has greater leisure time. The design of the paper is first to detail some of the changes in work practices that are taking place and how these will impact on society. It then offers several ways in which universities could modify their role to respond to these emerging challenges. This could include new courses, new organisational structures and new pedagogical practices. The paper provides a platform for discussion and debate around the strategic vision and direction of travel for higher education.

Purpose: This paper aims to present a comprehensive review of the present state and trends of smart education research. It addresses the need to have a systematic review of smart education to depict its research landscape in view of the growing volume of related publications. Design/methodology/approach: A bibliometric analysis of publications on smart education published in 2011 to 2020 was conducted, covering their patterns and trends in terms of collaboration, key publications, major topics and trends. A total of 1,317 publications with 29,317 cited references were collected from the Web of Science and Scopus for the bibliometric analysis. Findings: Research on smart education has been widely published in various sources. The most frequently cited references are all theoretical or discussion articles. Researchers in the USA, China, South Korea, India and Russia have been most active in research collaborations. However, international collaborations have remained infrequent except for those involving the USA. The research on smart education broadly covered smart technologies as well as teaching and learning. The emerging topics have addressed areas such as the Internet of Things, big data, flipped learning and gamification. Originality/value: This study depicts the intellectual landscape of smart education research, and illustrated the evolution and emerging trends in the field. The results highlight its latest developments and research needs, and suggest future work related to research collaborations on a larger scale and more studies on smart pedagogies.

Screening mammography aims to identify breast cancer at earlier stages of the disease, when treatment can be more successful 1 . Despite the existence of screening programmes worldwide, the interpretation of mammograms is affected by high rates of false positives and false negatives 2 . Here we present an artificial intelligence (AI) system that is capable of surpassing human experts in breast cancer prediction. To assess its performance in the clinical setting, we curated a large representative dataset from the UK and a large enriched dataset from the USA. We show an absolute reduction of 5.7% and 1.2% (USA and UK) in false positives and 9.4% and 2.7% in false negatives. We provide evidence of the ability of the system to generalize from the UK to the USA. In an independent study of six radiologists, the AI system outperformed all of the human readers: the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) for the AI system was greater than the AUC-ROC for the average radiologist by an absolute margin of 11.5%. We ran a simulation in which the AI system participated in the double-reading process that is used in the UK, and found that the AI system maintained non-inferior performance and reduced the workload of the second reader by 88%. This robust assessment of the AI system paves the way for clinical trials to improve the accuracy and efficiency of breast cancer screening.

Purpose: This purpose of this viewpoint is to address the intended good and unintended bad impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in financial crime. Design/methodology/approach: The paper relied primarily on secondary data resources, business cases and relevant laws and regulations, and it used a legal-economics perspective. Findings: Current AI systems could function as antidotes or accelerator of financial crime, in particular cybercrime. Research suggests criminal law could be applied via three approaches to curb these cybercrimes. However, others considered this to be an inappropriate mechanism to hold AI agents accountable, as present AI systems were not deemed capable of making ethically informed choices. Instead, administrative sanctions would be considered more appropriate for now. While keeping vigilance against AI malicious acts, regulatory authorities in the USA and the UK have opted largely for the innovation-friendly, market-oriented, permissionless approach over the state-interventionist stance so as to maintain their global competitive edge in this domain. Originality/value: The paper reinforced the growing arguments that AI applications should be deployed more as panacea for financial crimes rather than being abused as crime accelerators. There equally though is the need for both public and private sectors to be mindful of the unintended negative, harmful consequences to society, especially those connected to cybercrime. This paper primarily aims to provide a citation-based method for exploring the scholarly network of artificial intelligence (AI)-related research in the information science (IS) domain, especially from Global North (GN) and Global South (GS) perspectives. Three research objectives were addressed, namely (1) the publication patterns in the field, (2) the most influential articles and researched keywords in the field, and (3) the visualization of the scholarly network between GN and GS researchers between the years 2010 and 2020. On the basis of the PRISMA statement, longitudinal research data were retrieved from the Web of Science and analyzed. Thirty-two AI-related keywords were used to retrieve relevant quality articles. Finally, 149 articles accompanying the follow-up 8838 citing articles were identified as eligible sources. A co-citation network analysis was adopted to scientifically visualize the intellectual structure of AI research in GN and GS networks. The results revealed that the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom are the most productive GN countries; by contrast, China and India are the most productive GS countries. Next, the 10 most frequently co-cited AI research articles in the IS domain were identified. Third, the scholarly networks of AI research in the GN and GS areas were visualized. Between 2010 and 2015, GN researchers in the IS domain focused on applied research involving intelligent systems (e.g., decision support systems); between 2016 and 2020, GS researchers focused on big data applications (e.g., geospatial big data research). Both GN and GS researchers focused on technology adoption research (e.g., AI-related products and services) throughout the investigated period. Overall, this paper reveals the intellectual structure of the scholarly network on AI research and several applications in the IS literature. Objectives: This research aims to present and assess the Primary Functions of autoinjectors introduced in ISO 11608-1:2022. Investigate the risks in current autoinjector technology, identify and assess risks and benefits associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered autoinjectors, and propose a framework for mitigating these risks. ISO 11608-1:2022 is a standard that specifies requirements and test methods for needle-based injection systems intended to deliver drugs, focusing on design and function to ensure patient safety and product effectiveness. 'KZH' is an FDA product code used to classify autoinjectors, for regulatory purposes, ensuring they meet defined safety and efficacy standards before being marketed. Method: A comprehensive analysis of autoinjectors problems is conducted using data from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) database. This database records medical device reporting events, including those related to autoinjectors, reported by various sources. The analysis focuses on events associated with the product code KZH, covering data from January 1, 2008, to September 30, 2023. This research employs statistical frequency analysis and incorporates pertinent the FDA, United Kingdom, European Commission regulations, and ISO standards. Results: 500 medical device reporting events are assessed for autoinjectors under the KZH code. Ultimately, 188 of these events are confirmed to be associated with autoinjectors, all 500 medical devices were seen to lack AI capabilities. An analysis of these events for traditional mechanical autoinjectors revealed a predominant occurrence of malfunctions (72%) and injuries (26%) among event types. Device problems, such as breakage, defects, jams, and others, accounted for 45% of incidents, while 10% are attributed to patient problems, particularly missed and underdoses. Conclusion: Traditional autoinjectors are designed to assist patients in medication administration, underscoring the need for quality control, reliability, and design enhancements. AI autoinjectors, sharing this goal, bring additional cybersecurity and software risks, requiring a comprehensive risk management framework that includes standards, tools, training, and ongoing monitoring. The integration of AI promises to improve functionality, enable real-time monitoring, and facilitate remote clinical trials, timely interventions, and tailored medical treatments. Introduction: Machine learning (ML) uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to "learn" from data, without being explicitly programmed. Application of rapid advances in artificial intelligence systems, is expected to revolutionize healthcare in the near future. While cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death among elderly in present time, mortality is largely due to late diagnosis. Applied ML can accurately aid early prediction of cardiovascular diseases. The current work aims to review the available literature on applications of artificial intelligence or machine learning in healthcare to predict cardiovascular disease. Method: A literature searches on PubMed database in October 2018 using keywords "(Machine learning or artificial intelligence) & (Cardiovascular OR Heart OR Blood OR vessels OR Cardiac) & Prediction" revealed 1086 citations. However, most did not have machine learning and cardiovascular disease as principal focus. Using filters to allow the appearance of keywords in the title of the paper, limiting to studies including older persons (>65years) we narrowed our results to seven citations of which six which were freely available and are included in our review. Results: Among the early applications, Ong et al in 2012 generated a heart rate variability parameter from five-minute spectrogram and other vital parameters were added to generate a machine learning score which was found to be more accurate than modified early warning score. Liu et al in 2014 in Singapore reported that ML based selection of predictors of Cardiac events gave relevant and significant results. Dames et al, in 2017 found that machine learning of three dimensional right ventricular motion enable outcome prediction in pulmonary hypertension. Weng et al in 2017 in UK have compared four machine learning algorithms with an established algorithm (American college of Cardiology Guidelines) and found that machine learning significantly improves accuracy of cardiovascular risk prediction. Ambala et al in 2017 in USA used random survival forest technique to identify the top 20 predictors of each Cardiovascular Outcome. Conclusions: Our review shows that the impact of machine learning on ageing through early prediction of cardiovascular diseases can no longer be ignored and the field is just warming up. This Article explores the constitutional implications of algorithms, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal processes and decision-making, particularly under the Due Process Clause. Regarding Judge Henry J. Friendly's procedural due process principles of the U.S. Constitution, decisions produced using AI appear to violate all but one or two of them. For instance, AI systems may provide the right to present evidence and notice of the proposed action, but do not provide any opportunity for meaningful cross-examination, knowledge of opposing evidence, or the true reasoning behind a decision. Notice can also be inadequate or even incomprehensible. This Article analyzes the challenges of complying with procedural due process when employing AI systems, explains constraints on computer-assisted legal decision-making, and evaluates policies for fair AI processes in other jurisdictions, including the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK). Building on existing literature, it explores the various stages in the AI development process, noting the different points at which bias may occur, thereby undermining procedural due process principles. Furthermore, it discusses the key variables at the heart of AI machine learning models and proposes a framework for responsible AI designs. Purpose: Non-contrast CT head scans provide rapid and accurate diagnosis of acute head injury; however, increased utilisation of CT head scans makes it difficult to prioritise acutely unwell patients and places pressure on busy emergency departments (EDs). This study validates an AI algorithm to triage patients presenting with Intracranial Haemorrhage (ICH) or Acute Infarct whilst also identifying a subset of patients as Normal, with the potential to function as a rule-out test. Methods: In total, 390 CT head scans were collected from 3 institutions in the UK, US and India. Ground-truth labels were assigned by 3 FRCR consultant radiologists. AI performance, as well as the performance of 3 independent radiologists, was measured against ground-truth labels. Results: The algorithm showed AUC values of 0.988 (0.978–0.994), 0.933 (0.901–0.961) and 0.939 (0.919–0.958) for ICH, Acute Infarct and Normal, respectively. Sensitivity/specificity for ICH and Acute Infarct were 0.988/0.925 and 0.833/0.927, respectively, compared to 0.907/0.991 and 0.618/0.977 for radiologists. AI rule-out of Normal scans achieved 0.93% negative predictive value (NPV) for the removal of 54.3% of Normal cases, compared to 86.8% NPV for radiologists. Conclusion: We show our algorithm can provide effective triage of ICH and Acute Infarct to prioritise acutely unwell patients. AI can also benefit clinical accuracy, with the algorithm identifying 91.3% of radiologist false negatives for ICH and 69.1% for Acute Infarct. Rule-out of Normal scans has huge potential for workload management in busy EDs, in this case removing 27.4% of all scans with no acute findings missed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents the first-ever big data study of the student evaluation of teaching (SET) using artificial intelligence (AI). We train natural language processing (NLP) models on 1.6 million student evaluations from the US and the UK. We address two research questions: (1) are these models able to predict student ratings from the student textual feedback, and (2) can AI-powered SET eliminate the problems of the traditional SET based on Likert scale surveys. We test these NLP models on a new dataset of 12,386 university reviews from the UK and on 155 SET reviews from a university that agreed to run a pilot AI project. The trained NLP models exhibited high prediction accuracy, and they learnt two biases from humans, those of extreme responding and assigning higher ratings to less demanding courses. In the future, universities will likely adopt many AI-based tools that have proved successful in client management in other sectors. However, our results make a strong case against using AI as a black box for performativity purposes.
