The damage of extreme precipitation to the social economy and ecological environment has attracted extensive attention. Daily precipitation data of 59 meteorological stations located in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were selected, where the temporal and spatial distribution and variation characteristics of extreme precipitation from 1961 to 2017 were comprehensively analyzed by percentile threshold method, precipitation tendency rate method, the trend-free pre-whitening Mann Kendall trend test, Mann Kendall mutation test, and other methods. Further, three methods, the continuous wavelet transform, cross wavelet transform, and wavelet coherence analysis, were selected to analyze the correlation between extreme precipitation index and six atmospheric circulation indexes. Results show that from 1961 to 2017, the precipitation in Xinjiang increased, and the extreme precipitation (R99P), extreme precipitation days (R99D), extreme precipitation contribution rate (R99C), and extreme precipitation intensity (R99I) showed a significantly increasing trend. Due to the influence of topography, the spatial distribution of extreme precipitation is bounded by the Tianshan Mountains, decreasing from northwest to southeast, meeting the characteristics of "Northern Xinjiang is greater than Southern Xinjiang," indicating obvious spatial heterogeneity. Among the selected atmospheric circulation indexes, Western Pacific Subtropical High Intensity Index (WPSHII) and Western Pacific Subtropical High Intensity Index (SCSSHII) contribute significantly to extreme precipitation events in Xinjiang. There is an obvious positive correlation between SCSSHII and extreme precipitation index. In other words, the greater the SCSSHII, the greater the frequency and frequency of extreme precipitation events in the study area, and the more prone it is to natural disasters such as rainstorms and floods. Snow on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is an important signal for the prediction of East Asian climate. In this study, the relationship between the TP spring snowmelt and spring and summer precipitation in Northwest China (NWC) was investigated, along with the possible mechanisms linked to the impacts of snowmelt on precipitation. The results showed that the TP spring snowmelt had significant impacts on spring and summer precipitation in NWC. For example, when there was a large spring snowmelt in the central- eastern TP, the spring and summer precipitation in the Hexi Corridor and southeast NWC was excessive, especially in summer; when there was a large spring snowmelt in the northern TP, the spring and summer precipitation was deficient across the whole of NWC, while a large spring snowmelt in the western TP led to deficient spring and summer precipitation in eastern NWC but excessive precipitation in western NWC. The possible mechanisms for this included the fact that more spring snowmelt over the TP led to higher soil moisture contents, which further resulted in weakened subtropical westerly and enhanced ridge over Xinjiang. By changing the TP thermal forcing, these anomalous atmospheric circulation conditions transported water vapor into NWC, thus creating excessive summer precipitation in that region. Given the typical disturbances in the aqueous environment in the alpine area because of mining activities in Northwest China, a case study highlighting the enhanced effect of mining dust diffusion on the melting of the adjacent glacier is presented here. Initially, a three-dimensional numerical model of the local airflow field was established by considering the effects of both mines and glaciers using the FLUENT software. Then, the diffusion path and size range of dust particles from the mines were simulated by feeding the mining dust parameters into the above numerical model. Finally, a physical simulation experiment was performed to evaluate the influence of mining dust coverage on the glaciers. The major conclusions of this study were as follows: (1) The local airflow field in the target alpine area is controlled by the 'heat and cold double-island effects' formed by the mine and the glacier, and the wind circulation always takes place in a clockwise direction between the mining pit on the left and the glacier on the right. (2) In a given airflow field, there is a spread of mining dust from the mine to the glacier along the upper airflow. The arrival rates of the dust are 16.9% and 13.3% in winter and summer, respectively, and the horizontal distance of dust diffusion is inversely proportional to its particle size. (3) For an ice sample with a sectional area of 225 cm2 and a volume of 1000 mL, the melting rate increased by 4.5 mL/h with an increase of dust coverage by 10%. Furthermore, when compared with a control group without dust cover, the effect of a 28% increase in dust coverage is approximately equivalent to the effect of a 1 °C increase in temperature on the ablation speed of the glacier. The study results can provide a useful reference for the selection of mining sites and the control of mining dust diffusion in alpine regions with glaciers, thereby facilitating environmentally friendly mining in alpine regions. China has a marked continental monsoon climate characterized by dry and wet hazards that have destructive impacts on grape yields and quality. The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of dryness/wetness in the wine regions of China and explore the links between these variations and large-scale climatic factors. The crop-specific standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was used to characterize the dryness/wetness using meteorological data collected at 168 meteorological stations located in or near the wine regions from 1981–2015. Results showed that most wine regions of China experienced a wetting trend. The drought and wet event characteristics were region- and site-specific. The main wine regions of China (e.g., Xinjiang, Helan Mountain and Hexi Corridor) were characterized by relatively high drought severity; the extreme drought frequencies of the three regions were higher as well (11.5%, 3.3%, and 3.6%, respectively). Xinjiang was also characterized by a high wetness severity and an extremely high wetness frequency of 16%, but the wetness severity decreased over time. A 4–6-year periodical oscillation was commonly detected over the wine regions. The dryness/wetness characteristics were highly associated with the Southern Oscillation Index, Niño 3.4 and the Indian Ocean Dipole, with highest correlation coefficients of −0.40, 0.36 and 0.43 at lag times of 11, 8, and 11 months, respectively. The serious dry and wet events that occurred in 2001 and 1998, respectively, were speculated to be associated with anomalous atmospheric circulation patterns. These results can be used to inform grapevine stakeholders at various levels (e.g., farmer and industry) for developing strategies to mitigate and adapt dryness/wetness events in the wine regions of China. Based on the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), a significant increase after the mid-1990s is detected in the annual number of days with drought in the zonal belt from southern Xinjiang to southern Northeast China and North China. This change features the predominant mode of the annual number of days with drought in China. Meanwhile, two significant breakpoints in 1981 and 2001 indicate a continuous increase of days with drought in the meridional belt from eastern Northwest China to eastern Southwest China. The increase in days with drought is closely related to the significant warming in the zonal belt but is attributed to both the increase of temperature and the decrease of precipitation in the meridional belt. The typical circulation patterns responsible for the increase of days with drought comprise a wave train stretching from North Atlantic to East Asia, the generally anomalous high pressure over China, the northerly anomalies prevailing over northern and central China, and the suppressed convection in most of the zonal and meridional belt. Both the AMO and the PDO after the 1980s have a close relationship with the interdecadal variation of the number of days with drought. On one hand, either a positive AMO phase or negative PDO phase motivates the typical circulation patterns favorable for the occurrence of drought. On the other hand, both the AMO and PDO affect the warming in the zonal and meridional belt, and the PDO is also closely connected with the precipitation in the meridional belt. Xinjiang has a serious wind erosion problem due to its fragile ecological condition and sensitivity to climate change. Wind erosion climatic erosivity is a measure of climatic factors influencing wind erosion; evaluating its spatiotemporal variations and relationship with the large-scale circulation pattern can contribute to the understanding of the climate change effect on wind erosion risk. Thus, this study quantified the wind erosion climatic erosivity and examined the connections between climatic erosivity and climate indices using trend analysis, geo-statistical analysis, and cross-wavelet analysis based on the observed daily meteorological data from 64 weather stations in Xinjiang, China during 1969–2019 (50 years). The results indicated that the climatic erosivity showed a significant downward trend at seasonal and annual scales over the past 50 years. Strong seasonality in the C-factor was found, with its highest values in the spring and summer and its lowest values in the winter. The average climatic erosivity was weaker during El Niño events than during La Niña events. The impact of El Niño events on climatic erosivity in Xinjiang continued from the beginning of the event to two months after the end of the events. The La Niña events had a lag effect on the climatic erosivity in Xinjiang, with a lag period of 4 months. From a statistical perspective, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and Arctic Oscillation (AO) indices showed relationships to the climatic erosivity in Xinjiang in terms of their correlation and periodicity. The relationships between the climatic erosivity and ENSO were not clearly positive or negative, with many correlations advanced or delayed in phase. The NAO and AO indices showed a consistent in-phase relationship with climatic erosivity on significant bands, whereas the profound mechanisms involved in this require further study. In this study, the Flexible Particle dispersion model (FLEXPART) is applied to determine the moisture source of heavy precipitation in Xinjiang in the wet season (April--September) from 1979 to 2018. This is investigated for different meteorological patterns of heavy precipitation categories based on the self-organizing maps (SOM) method. The SOM results suggest that there are four main meteorological patterns (N1, N2, N3, and N4) for heavy precipitation in Xinjiang. These match the strength and position of geopotential height anomalies at middle-to-high levels over central Asia and indicate the anomalous activities of the central Asia trough and vortex. Further analysis shows that the heavy precipitation is centered at the Tianshan Mountains and the Kunlun Mountains in the N1 and N3 patterns and around the Tianshan Mountains in the N2 and N4 patterns. There are four moisture source regions that contribute to each of the four meteorological patterns for heavy precipitation in Xinjiang, which are listed in descending order of their contribution rates: southern Xinjiang (29%-37%), north-central Asia (19%-27%), northern Xinjiang (14%-19%), and south-central Asia (13%-16%). The contribution of each source to the heavy precipitation in Xinjiang varies with the meteorological pattern. Additionally, the contribution rates of each source region match well with the precipitation-related particle aggregation before heavy precipitation days. Winter persistent extreme cold events (WPECEs) often cause great damage to the development of economies and people's lives. The sub-seasonal variation of the atmospheric circulation is regarded as one of important causes of extreme weather, and is key to propel the extended period prediction. In this paper, we mainly analyze the WPECEs in Xinjiang region and their relationship with the sub-seasonal variation of the East Asian polar front jet (PFJ). The results suggest the persistent extreme cold event (equal or greater than 7 days) occurs most frequently in Xinhe County of Xinjiang region, with obvious inter-annual and inter-decadal variations. Further analysis shows that the variation of the mean temperature in the key area has characteristics of intra-seasonal variation when the WPECE occurs. The result of composite analysis shows that this intra-seasonal variation is related to the sub-seasonal variation of atmospheric circulation, especially the PFJ anomalous activity near Lake Balkhash. By using the power spectrum analysis method, note that the PFJ activity has the characteristics of quasi-biweekly oscillation (QBWO) in WPECEs. On quasi-biweekly scale (10–20-day filtered), the weakening of PFJ, the intensification of the zonal easterly wind in the upper troposphere, the accumulation of the strong cold air, and the intensification of the meridional northerly wind in the lower troposphere enhance the occurrence of WPECEs in Xinjiang. Frequent extreme climate events have attracted considerable attention around the world. Malus sieversii in Xinjiang is the ancestor of cultivated apple, and it is mainly distributed in the Ili river valley at end of the Tianshan Mountains. Wild fruit forests have been degraded, but the cause remains unclear. In order to identify whether extreme climate events caused this degradation reanalysis data and atmospheric circulation indices were used to determine the trends and the reasons for extreme climate changes. Subsequently, we further investigated the effect of extreme climate events on wild fruit forest using characteristics of extreme climate indices and tree-ring chronology. We found increasing trends in both extreme precipitation and warm indices, and decreasing trends in cool indices. Extreme climate events were mainly associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Analysis of data of wind and geopotential height field at 500 hPa showed that strengthening wind, increasing geopotential height, cyclone and anti-cyclone circulation drivers contributed to extreme climate events. In the non-degraded region, there were significant positive correlations between tree-ring chronology and both extreme precipitation and extreme warm indices (except for warm spell duration indicator). The other extreme indices (except for heavy rain days) had a large correlation range with tree-rings in a 4–8-year period. These results indicated that extreme precipitation and extreme warm indices intensified M. sieversii growth of the non-degraded region on multi-time scales. In contrast, the degraded region showed insignificant negative relationship between tree-ring chronology and both extreme precipitation and extreme warm indices [except for warm spell duration index (WSDI)], and significant negative correlations in a 4–8-year period were detected between tree-ring chronology and most of the extreme precipitation indices, including heavy rain days, very wet days, cold spell duration indicator, simple precipitation intensity index (SDII), and annual total precipitation. Under the long disturbance of inappropriate anthropic activities, extreme climate has caused the outbreak of pests and diseases resulting in the degeneration of wild fruit forest. Global warming accelerates water cycle with features of regional difference. However, little is known about the physical mechanism behind the phenomenon. To reveal the links between water cycle and climatic environment, we analyzed the changes of water cycle elements and their relationships with climatic and environmental factors. We found that when global warming was significant during the period of 1986-2003, the precipitation in Tarim mountains as well as Xinjiang increased rapidly except for Tarim plains, which indicated that there existed a signal of acceleration for water cycle in Xinjiang. The speed of water cycle is mainly affected by altitude, latitude, longitude, slope direction, and the most fundamental element is temperature. Moreover, according to Clausius-Kela Bai Lung relation, we found that the climate change induced the increase of temperature and accelerated the local water cycle only for the wet places. As one of the largest arid and semi-arid regions in the world, central Asia (CA) is very sensitive to changes in regional climate. However, because of the poor continuity of daily observational precipitation records in CA, the spatial and temporal variations of extreme precipitation in recent decades remain unclear. Considering their good spatial and temporal continuity, gridded data, such as Climate Prediction Center (CPC) global precipitation, and reanalysis data, such as ERA-Interim (ERA), are helpful for exploring the spatial–temporal variations of extreme precipitation. This study evaluates how well CPC and ERA can represent observed precipitation extremes by comparing the differences in eight extreme precipitation indices and observation data at 84 meteorological stations. The results indicate that the CPC (except for 1979–1981) is more suitable for depicting changes in precipitation extremes. Based on the CPC data for the period 1982–2020, we found that seven indices of precipitation extremes, including consecutive wet days (CWD), max1-day precipitation amount (Rx1day), max5-day precipitation amount (Rx5day), number of heavy precipitation days (R10), very wet days (R95p), annual total precipitation in wet days (PRCPTOT), and simple precipitation intensity index (SDII) have increased by 0.2 d/10a, 0.9 mm/10a, 1.8 mm/10a, 0.3 d/10, 8.4 mm/10a, 14.3 mm/10a and 0.1 mm/d/10a, respectively, and the consecutive dry days (CDDs) have decreased by −3.10 d/10a. It is notable that CDDs decreased significantly in the north of Xinjiang (XJ) but increased in Kyrgyzstan (KG), Tajikistan (TI), and eastern Turkmenistan (TX). The other indices increased clearly in the west of XJ, north of Kazakhstan (KZ), and east of KG but decreased in the south of KG, TI, and parts of XJ. For most indices, the largest change occurred in spring, the main season of precipitation in CA. Therefore, the large-scale atmospheric circulation in April is analyzed to contrast between the most and least precipitation years for the region. A typical circulation pattern in April for those extremely wet years includes an abnormal low-pressure center at 850 hpa to the east of the Caspian Sea, which enhances the southerly winds from the Indian Ocean and hence the transportation of water vapor required for precipitation into CA. This abnormal circulation pattern occurred more frequently after 2001 than before, thus partly explaining the recent increasing trends of precipitation extremes in CA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A persistent problem in surface flux research is that turbulent fluxes observed by eddy covariance methods tend to be lower than the available energy. Using 7 years of eddy covariance flux observations in the Ebinur Lake National Wetland Nature Reserve (ELNWNR) in Xinjiang, Northwest China, this study analyzes the surface–atmosphere energy transfer characteristics at the station to explore variation characteristics of the energy flux and the energy balance closure (EBC), and the factors that influence EBC. The results show that: (1) diurnal and seasonal variations are observed in turbulent flux, available energy, and the partitioning of sensible and latent fluxes affected by environmental factors; (2) the degree of EBC varies significantly diurnally and seasonally, with EBC during the growing season significantly higher than during the dormant season; (3) due to the surface heterogeneity, EBC exhibits significant variations with wind direction that differ between the growing and dormant seasons; (4) environmental factors (e.g., vapor pressure deficit and air temperature) are important in limiting near-surface EBC, but they play a secondary role compared with the state of atmospheric motion.
