The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is one of the most important climate systems during boreal winter. It has a large meridional extent and provides a vital bridge between the mid‐to‐high latitudes and the tropics. This paper reviews the latest research on the climate variability of the EAWM, with particular emphasis on the associated processes of extratropical–tropical interaction. Some new results have been achieved in understanding the variation of the EAWM on interdecadal, interannual, and intraseasonal time scales, such as the interdecadal strengthening in the early 21st century, the unstable impact of El Niño–South Oscillation (ENSO) on the EAWM, and the intraseasonal strong cold events in East Asia. In addition, understanding of the extratropical–tropical interactions related to the EAWM has improved in several aspects, including the impacts of the EAWM on ENSO‐related climate effects, and the variation of regional Hadley circulation over the western Pacific and its climate impacts in the Asia–Australia region. Moreover, recent work has systematically evaluated the capacity of climate models to simulate the EAWM, including its climatology, interannual to interdecadal variations, and its relationship with ENSO. Based on the 18 realizations of three state-of-the-art climate models participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), this paper examines the changes in climatology and trends of winter diurnal temperature range (DTR) over East Asia in response to natural and anthropogenic forcings. In the observation, the climatology of DTR during 1979–2014 displays a horizontal tile from southwest to northeast over East Asia. In addition, the observed DTR also presents an obviously declining trend in recent decades, with the magnitude of roughly −0.10 °C decade−1. The historical all-forcing simulations well reproduce the geographical distributions and magnitude of climatology and trends of winter DTR over East Asia in 1979–2014. Furthermore, the winter DTR exhibits a continuous declining trend from the historical scenario to the future SSP245 scenario over East Asia, with the most significant declining during the first half of twenty-first century (i.e., 2021–2060). Based on the individual forcing experiments, it suggests that the greenhouse gases forcing plays a primary role in driving the climatology and trends of DTR over East Asia, especially for the SSP245 scenario. Further analysis indicates that the increasing precipitation under greenhouse gases forcing largely explain the declining DTR trends over East Asia, especially over the northern East Asia both in historical and SSP245 scenarios. • The observed decreasing DTR trends are reasonably captured in the all-forcing historical simulations in CMIP6 models. • The greenhouse gas forcing plays a primary role in driving the declining DTR trends over East Asia • The declining of DTR is partly attributed to the increasing precipitation over East Asia in the greenhouse gas forcing. Previous studies have projected an increase in future summer precipitation across East Asia (EA). This study investigates the relative contributions of thermodynamic and dynamic components to future precipitation changes in three key sub-regions of EA where the maximum centers of the historical precipitation are located (the tropical region, East China, and the Japan and Korea sector), and analyzes the causes of the changes in thermodynamic and dynamic components. Outputs from 30 climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) are used. From these, the five best-performing models for historical summer precipitation climatology for EA are selected. The future summer precipitations in the three sub-regions over the near- to mid-term (2020–2069) and the long-term (2070–2095) are then examined using the multi-model ensemble mean of the five models selected (MMM05). The projections were driven by four combined scenarios of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and forcing levels of the Representative Concentration Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). The results show that long-term precipitations under SSP5-8.5 are greater than those under the other scenarios across all sub-regions. After the 2070s under SSP5-8.5, a marked precipitation intensification is identified in all three sub-regions, but with different rates of increase. The projected precipitation increase is primarily attributed to the thermodynamic component, while the dynamic component related to circulation changes is relatively weak. Further analysis indicates that the pattern of the thermodynamic component in the three sub-regions is dominated by the climatological upward motion, mediated by an increase in moisture. The evolution of hydroclimate in East Asia during the Pliocene—a potential analog of the future greenhouse climate—remains highly uncertain. Here we reconstruct changes in the hydroclimate of Northern China during this epoch. Our results reveal previously undocumented severe drought conditions that persisted through the early Pliocene with a significantly greater magnitude than suggested by other records. Using a broad hierarchy of climate simulations, we find that reduction in the Pacific meridional sea surface temperature (SST) gradient has particularly strong impacts on precipitation over Northern China, which suggests its key role in maintaining drought conditions during the early Pliocene. The weaker Pacific meridional SST gradient causes the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon precipitation over this region via a reduction of atmospheric northward moisture transport from the ocean, which enhances aridity inland. Our results highlight the fundamental control of the tropical ocean on the extra‐tropical hydrological cycle. The Pliocene epoch provides a potential analog to the future greenhouse climate. Here, for the first time we reconstruct high‐resolution aridity changes over the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) in northern East Asia during the Pliocene. Our results indicate persistent drought conditions over CLP during the early Pliocene. Analyzing a broad range of climate model simulations, we find that the reduced meridional sea surface temperature gradient is a critical factor in the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon over Northern China and in maintaining drought conditions during the early Pliocene relative to the late Pliocene. Our results expand the Asian inland paleoclimate records during the Pliocene, providing new information on past Asian monsoon precipitation variations during the warm Pliocene with potential implications for future hydroclimate changes under greenhouse warming in East Asia. Central Asia is one of the most important sources of mineral saline dust worldwide. A comprehensive understanding of Central Asian dust transport is essential for evaluating its impacts on human health, ecological safety, weather and climate. This study first puts forward an observation-based climatology of Central Asian dust transport flux by using the 3-D dust detection of Cloud-Aerosol LiDAR with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP). The seasonal difference of transport flux and downstream contribution are evaluated and compared with those of the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2). Central Asian dust can be transported not only southward in summer under the effect of the South Asian summer monsoon, but also eastward in other seasons under the control of the westerly jet. Additionally, the transport of Central Asian dust across the Pamir Plateau to the Tibetan Plateau is also non-negligible, especially during spring (with a transport flux rate of 150 kg m−1 day−1). The annual CALIOP-based downstream contribution of Central Asian dust to South Asian (164.01 Tg) is 2.1 times that to East Asia (78.36 Tg). This can be attributed to the blocking effect of the higher terrain between Central and East Asia. Additionally, the downstream contributions to South and East Asia from MERRA-2 are only 0.36 and 0.84 times that of CALIOP, respectively. This difference implies the overestimation of the wet and dry depositions of the model, especially in the low latitude zone. The quantification of the Central Asian dust transport allows a better understanding of the Central Asian dust cycle, and supports the calibration/validation of aerosol-related modules of regional and global climate models. This study evaluates the precipitation over East Asia simulated by the variable resolution CAM‐MPAS featuring the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) atmospheric dynamical core coupled with the physics parameterizations of the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) version 5.4. Two CAM‐MPAS experiments, one with a global quasi‐uniform resolution mesh of 120 km (MPAS‐UR) and the other with a variable resolution mesh of 30–120 km refined over East Asia (MPAS‐VR), are conducted from 1989 to 2005 following the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project protocol. Two regional climate model simulations at ∼25 km resolution from the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment East Asia second plan are also analyzed for comparison. Results show that CAM‐MPAS performs better than the selected regional models in simulating the precipitation climatology over East Asia. Compared with MPAS‐UR, MPAS‐VR with refinement over East Asia better simulates the precipitation over and around the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the upper‐level circulation, the precipitation frequency and intensity in various regions of China, and the interannual precipitation pattern associated with the East Asian summer monsoon. Both decreased grid spacing and the use of finer‐scale terrain information contribute to the improvements in MPAS‐VR relative to MPAS‐UR. However, decreased grid spacing is more essential for simulating the precipitation magnitude over TP and the location of peak precipitation south of TP, likely due to the better resolved physical and dynamical processes associated with orographic precipitation. The 30–120 km CAM‐MPAS model is shown to be a promising tool for precipitation simulation over East Asia. However, traditional low‐resolution global climate models still have difficulty in realistically simulating the mean‐state and variability of precipitation over East Asia, partly due to their insufficient resolution to resolve the complex terrain and associated synoptic‐scale systems. In this work, we perform model experiments using the Community Atmosphere Model coupled with the atmospheric dynamical core from the Model for Prediction Across Scales with a variable resolution mesh to assess the impact of regional refinement on the precipitation simulation over East Asia. Experiment with higher resolution (30 vs. 120 km) over East Asia better simulates the total precipitation amount over and around the Tibetan Plateau (TP), as well as precipitation frequency, intensity, and interannual variability associated with the East Asian summer monsoon. The finer grid spacing is found to contribute more to the improvements in areas adjacent to TP than the use of finer terrain information, likely due to better resolved physical and dynamical processes associated with orographic precipitation. This study investigates the applicability of five cumulus parameterization schemes (CPSs) for precipitation simulation in East Asia with the atmospheric model ECHAM6.3. Besides the built-in Tiedtke–Nordeng–Tiedtke (TNT) scheme, four updated schemes are implemented in ECHAM6.3: two modified Tiedtke schemes, the simplified Arakawa–Schubert scheme (SAS), and the Betts–Miller–Janjić scheme (BMJ). An overall assessment of seasonal climatology shows that the SAS and the two modified Tiedtke schemes have clear advantages over the default TNT scheme. The spatial pattern of precipitation climatology and seasonal variations are successfully reproduced by all CPSs. Biases of rainfall distribution are strongly modulated by the simulation of atmospheric circulation systems over East Asia. The main characteristics of summer monsoonal precipitation, including the increase in rainfall and rain belt migration under the influence of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), are successfully captured. However, there are large model diversities in the location and intensity of rain centers around Southeast China and the Korean Peninsula. In addition, all simulations of Meiyu rain band migration are farther north than observed. The SAS scheme is the best of the five CPSs in simulating the timing and intensity of seasonal rainfall variations. The results also suggest that the environmental feedback of a CPS is a key factor that determines the applicability of the CPS in a particular climate model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distinctive monsoon climate over East Asia, which is affected by the vast Eurasian continent and Pacific Ocean basin and the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau, provides arguably the best testbed for evaluating the competence of Earth system climate models. Here, a set of diagnostic metrics, consisting of 14 items and 7 variables, is specifically developed. This physically intuitive set of metrics focuses on the essential features of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), and includes fields that depict the climatology, the major modes of variability, and unique characteristics of the EASM. The metrics are applied to multimodel historical simulations derived from 20 models that participated in phases 3 and 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP3 and CMIP5, respectively), along with the newly developed Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Earth System Model, version 3. The CMIP5 models show significant improvements over the CMIP3 models in terms of the simulated East Asian monsoon circulation systems on a regional scale, major modes of EAWM variability, the monsoon domain and precipitation intensity, and teleconnection associated with the heat source over the Philippine Sea. Clear deficiencies persist from CMIP3 to CMIP5 with respect to capturing the major modes of EASM variability, as well as the relationship between the EASM and ENSO during El Niño developing and decay phases. The possible origins that affect models' performance are also discussed. The metrics provide a tool for evaluating the performance of Earth system climate models, and facilitating the assessment of past and projected future changes of the East Asian monsoon. Convection-permitting regional climate models have been shown to improve precipitation simulation in many aspects, such as the diurnal cycle, precipitation frequency, intensity and extremes in many studies over several geographical regions of the world, but their skill in reproducing the warm-season precipitation characteristics over the East Asia has not been robustly tested yet. Motivated by recent advances in computing power, model physics and high-resolution reanalysis, we use the convection-permitting weather research and forecasting (WRF) model configured with 3 km grid spacing to simulate the warm-season precipitation in eastern China for 10 seasons (2008–2017). The hourly 31-km-resolution ERA5 reanalysis data are used to provide initial and boundary conditions for the simulations. The objectives are (1) to evaluate the model skill in simulating warm-season precipitation climatology in the East Asian monsoon region, (2) to identify the promises and problems of the convection-permitting simulation, and (3) to investigate solutions for the model deficiencies. Results demonstrate that the 3-km-resolution WRF model reasonably reproduces the spatial characteristics of seasonal and sub-seasonal precipitation, the seasonal meridional migration associated with the summer monsoon activity, the diurnal variation phase and amplitude, and the propagating convection east of the Tibetan Plateau. The major deficiency is that the model overestimates precipitation amount, especially in the afternoon. Analysis and sensitivity experiments suggest that improved treatment of sub-grid cloud fraction and the aerosol effects may help to suppress the oft-reported high precipitation bias. The prediction skill and source of the predictability of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) system are examined in this work based on four state‐of‐the‐art seasonal climate forecast models including BCC_CSM1.1, ECMWF_SYS4, NCEP_CFS2 and TCC_CPS2. The prediction of the climatology and interannual EASM pattern and the impact on the prediction are further investigated. It is noted that the four models have some skill in predicting summer rainfall in the East Asia, however, the skill is low on average and also largely regional dependence. The interannual variation of EASM measured by monsoon circulation index is well reproduced, implying that the broad‐scale feature/pattern of EASM has higher predictability than the detailed spatial variation of EASM rainfall. The possible sources of predictability of the interannual variability of EASM are associated with the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the north Indian Ocean (NIO) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. The correlation pattern of rainfall with the NIO SST is characterized by a tripole pattern from south to north of East Asia, which is different from the correlation distribution of the southern‐northern dipole with ENSO, suggesting that NIO SST may exert influence on the EASM independently. The major biases in climatology of EASM in the models are the northward shift of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) and weak monsoonal southerly over the coast of East Asia, which leads to the prediction bias of the Meiyu/Baiu/Changma (MBC) rainfall belt. The prediction of the interannual EASM pattern presents two deficiencies: too weak rainfall variability and northward shift of the dipole rainfall pattern (opposite variation between MBC and the northwestern Pacific), that may be caused by the biases of WPSH in the models. The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) has significant impacts on local and global hydrological and climatic systems. However, most current atmospheric and coupled models have difficulty in capturing the climatological mean state of the EASM. The present study investigated the possible improvement of EASM simulation via coupling the Stochastic Multicloud Model (SMCM) to the state-of-the-art ECHAM6.3 atmosphere model. Evaluated by the pattern correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error, the modified ECHAM6.3, i.e., with SMCM coupling, showed better performance in simulating the EASM in terms of the precipitation pattern and intensity, the pattern of the western North Pacific subtropical high, the monsoon onset, and its seasonal evolution. Analyses also revealed that the modified ECHAM6.3 outperformed the default ECHAM6.3 in terms of large-scale circulation and vertically integrated moisture transport. Finally, it was that the intensified land–sea thermal contrast in both the meridional and zonal directions, as well as the stronger meridional temperature gradient in the upper troposphere and enhanced diabatic heating over the Tibetan Plateau, which are associated with the stochastic cloud, were the main reasons for the better performance of the modified ECHAM6.3 in simulating the EASM. This study assesses the ability of the 25 GCMs from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) to simulate Ural blocking (UB) and its linkage with the East Asian winter climate [December-February (DJF)] in a historical run (1950/51-2004/05). A Ural blocking index (UBI) is defined as the DJF-mean blocking frequency over 45°-90°E for each winter. Regression analyses suggest that the long-term mean bias of UBI is caused by the long-term mean circulation bias over the North Atlantic. On seasonal time scales, the GCMs simulating a positive bias of UBI are associated with a stronger Atlantic jet stream, as well as stronger westerly momentum fluxes from the North Atlantic to Europe. On synoptic time scales, however, these GCMs tend to be associated with a weaker Siberian high and East Asian trough during the evolution of a UB event. Altogether, there is no apparent linkage between the long-term mean bias of UB and the East Asian winter climate. The influence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the East Asian-western Pacific (EAWP) climate in boreal winter is investigated in the phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) model results and then compared to that in the phase 3 (CMIP3) results. In particular, the role played by the differences among models in ENSO properties, including the amplitude and longitudinal extension of ENSO's sea surface temperature (SST) pattern, is analyzed. Results show that an eastward shrinking of ENSO's SST pattern leads to quite weak circulation and climatic responses over the EAWP regions in the models. On the contrary, a westward expansion of the SST pattern shifts the anomalous Walker circulation too far west. The resultant precipitation anomalies and lower-tropospheric atmospheric Rossby wave responses both extend unrealistically into the Indian Ocean, and the hemispheric asymmetry of the Rossby wave response is missing. All these features lead to unrealistic climatic impacts of ENSO over the EAWP regions. In contrast to the above two cases, a reasonable longitudinal extension of ENSO's SST pattern corresponds to better ENSO teleconnections over the EAWP regions. Nevertheless, the atmospheric responses over the western Pacific are still located farther west than observed, implying a common bias of CMIP5 models. In this case, a larger amplitude of ENSO variability to some extent helps to reduce model biases and facilitate better climatic responses to ENSO in the EAWP regions.
