This paper discusses the interannual variation of winter cold surges (CSs) over East Asia (EA) from the perspective of the cold air path and its relationship with autumn Barents Sea ice concentration (BSIC). Flexible particle dispersion model for large-scale atmospheric transport process simulation is used to track the cold air path of 301 CSs in EA in winters from 1979 to 2017, and the probability density distribution of cold air path is calculated by kernel density estimation. The cold air mainly originates from the Ural Mountains, and is continuously cooled by the impact of cold land, then accumulates and strengthens near the Lake Baikal, and finally invades EA under the guidance of the northwest airflow. The autumn BSIC has a significant negative correlation with CSs over EA. The decreased autumn BSIC hinders the spread of zonal warm advection over Eurasia and makes the soil temperature near Lake Baikal drop, and the negative anomaly of soil temperature persists from autumn to winter, strengthening cold source therein, which provides suitable thermal conditions for occurring more CSs over EA. Moreover, the decreased autumn BSIC can also persist to winter, which leads to the positive anomaly of the geopotential height over the polar region. Through the propagation of Rossby wave, the negative geopotential height anomaly over EA is excited and provides the appropriate dynamic conditions for forming more CSs in EA. The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is one of the most important climate systems during boreal winter. It has a large meridional extent and provides a vital bridge between the mid‐to‐high latitudes and the tropics. This paper reviews the latest research on the climate variability of the EAWM, with particular emphasis on the associated processes of extratropical–tropical interaction. Some new results have been achieved in understanding the variation of the EAWM on interdecadal, interannual, and intraseasonal time scales, such as the interdecadal strengthening in the early 21st century, the unstable impact of El Niño–South Oscillation (ENSO) on the EAWM, and the intraseasonal strong cold events in East Asia. In addition, understanding of the extratropical–tropical interactions related to the EAWM has improved in several aspects, including the impacts of the EAWM on ENSO‐related climate effects, and the variation of regional Hadley circulation over the western Pacific and its climate impacts in the Asia–Australia region. Moreover, recent work has systematically evaluated the capacity of climate models to simulate the EAWM, including its climatology, interannual to interdecadal variations, and its relationship with ENSO. Monsoon onset over the South China Sea occurs in April–May, marking the start of the wet season over East Asia. Skillful prediction of onset timing remains an open challenge. Recently, theoretical studies using idealized models have revealed feedbacks at work during the seasonal transitions of the Hadley cells and have shown that these are relevant to monsoon onset over Asia. Here, I hypothesize that monsoon onset occurs earlier in years when the atmosphere over the South China Sea is already in a state where these feedbacks are more easily triggered. I find that local anomalies in lower‐level moist static energy in the preceding January–March are well correlated with South China Sea Monsoon onset timing. This relationship remains relatively consistent on decadal timescales, while correlations with other teleconnections vary, and is used to develop a simple forecast model for onset timing that shows skill competitive with that of more complex models. Plain Language Summary: Arable land in China is estimated to feed 20% of the world's population on 7% of the world's farmlands, with much of this region watered by rainfall from the East Asian Summer Monsoon. Forecasting the arrival of the monsoon, which occurs first over the South China Sea in April–May, is therefore helpful for agricultural planning. However, producing a reliable forecast remains an open challenge. Recently, simple climate models, for example, models including seasons but with no land, have been used along with observations to investigate the most basic processes controlling climatological monsoon onset over Asia. In this paper, I suggest that year‐to‐year variations in monsoon onset timing are controlled by the same processes and, based on these, I suggest climate variables that may help in predicting when the monsoon will begin. By using this approach, I find that the "Moist Static Energy" (a quantity that combines temperature and humidity) over the South China Sea in January–March is strongly correlated with monsoon onset timing. The paths of winter cold surge (CS) events in East Asia (EA) from 1979 to 2017 are tracked by the Flexible Particle (FLEXPART) model using ERA-Interim daily datasets, and the probability density distribution of the paths is calculated by the kernel density estimation (KDE) method. The results showed that the paths of CSs are significantly correlated with the intensity of the CSs, which shows an interdecadal transition from weak to strong around 1995. CS paths can be classified into two types, namely, the western path type and the northern path type, which were more likely to occur before and after 1995, respectively. Before 1995, the cold air mainly originated from Europe and moved from west to east, and the synoptic features were associated with the zonal wave train. After 1995, cold air accumulated over western Siberia and then invaded EA along the northern path, and the synoptic features were mainly associated with the blocking structure. The geopotential height (GPH) anomalies over the Arctic were abnormally strong. This paper further analyzes the relationship between CSs and winter sea ice concentration (SIC) in the Arctic. The results show that the intensity of CSs is negatively correlated with the Barents SIC (BSIC). When the BSIC declines, the upward wave flux over the Barents Sea is enhanced and expanded to the midlatitude region. GPH anomalies over the Arctic are positive and form a negative AO-like pattern, which is conducive to the formation of the northern path CS. Obvious biases in simulating tropical cyclone (TC) genesis of the current climate models hamper our understanding of TC changes. In this study, we found a delay of the seasonal cycle of TC genesis frequency over the western North Pacific (WNP) in most Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models. During the active TC season, the simulated south‐warming and north‐cooling surface temperature bias amplifies the meridional gradient and excites thermal winds. This weakens the western North Pacific Subtropical High and easterly monsoon trough, which further reduces TC genesis frequency over the western WNP in summer. But in autumn, positive TC genesis biases were only observed in coupled models over the eastern WNP. Both seasons contribute to the delayed seasonal cycle of TC frequency in models. Our findings highlight the importance of accurate simulation of surface temperature by climate models to TC simulations and aid in future model improvements. In this investigation, we find a substantial influence of surface temperature bias in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) climate models on the simulation of the seasonal cycle of TC genesis frequency over the western North Pacific (WNP). The delay in the seasonal cycle of TC genesis frequency is widespread among most CMIP6 models. During boreal summer and autumn, the simulated bias of south‐warming and north‐cooling surface temperature increases its meridional gradient and triggers thermal winds. In summer, the weak western North Pacific Subtropical High and easterly monsoon trough, two crucial large‐scale circulation systems, cause a large negative TC genesis bias in models over the western WNP, substantially contributing to the delay of the seasonal cycle. Meanwhile, the relatively small positive bias of coupled models over the eastern WNP in autumn makes a secondary contribution. The combined contributions of these biases cause delays in seasonal simulation of TC genesis frequency. Cold extremes have large impacts on human society. Understanding the physical processes dominating the changes in cold extremes is crucial for a reliable projection of future climate change. The observed cold extremes have decreased during the last several decades, and this trend will continue under future global warming. Here, we quantitatively identify the contributions of dynamic (changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation) and thermodynamic (rising temperatures resulting from global warming) effects to East Asian cold extremes in the past several decades and in a future warm climate by using two sets of large-ensemble simulations of climate models. We show that the dynamic component accounts for over 80 % of the cold-month (coldest 5 % boreal winter months) surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly over the past 5 decades. However, in a future warm climate, the thermodynamic change is the main contributor to the decreases in the intensity and occurrence probability of East Asian cold extremes, while the dynamic change is also contributive. The intensity of East Asian cold extremes will decrease by around 5 °C at the end of the 21st century, in which the thermodynamic (dynamic) change contributes approximately 75 % (25 %). The present-day (1986–2005) East Asian cold extremes will almost never occur after around 2035, and this will happen 10 years later due solely to thermodynamic change. The upward trend of a positive Arctic Oscillation-like sea level pressure pattern dominates the changes in the dynamic component. Reliable attribution of Asian summer monsoon variations to aerosol forcing is critical to reducing uncertainties in future projections of regional water availability, which is of utmost importance for risk management and adaptation planning in this densely populated region. Yet, simulating the monsoon remains a challenge for climate models that suffer from long-standing biases, undermining their reliability in attributing anthropogenically forced changes. We analyze a suite of climate model experiments to identify a link between model biases and monsoon responses to Asian aerosols and associated physical mechanisms, including the role of large-scale circulation changes. The aerosol impact on monsoon precipitation and circulation is strongly influenced by a model's ability to simulate the spatio-temporal variability in the climatological monsoon winds, clouds, and precipitation across Asia, which modulates the magnitude and efficacy of aerosol–cloud–precipitation interactions, an important component of the total aerosol response. There is a strong interplay between South Asia and East Asia monsoon precipitation biases and their relative predominance in driving the overall monsoon response. We found a striking contrast between the early- and late-summer aerosol-driven changes ascribable to opposite signs and seasonal evolution of the biases in the two regions. A realistic simulation of the evolution of the large-scale atmospheric circulation is crucial to realize the full extent of the aerosol impact over Asia. These findings provide important implications for better understanding and constraining the diversity and inconsistencies of model responses to aerosol changes over Asia in historical simulations and future projections. The wet bulb temperature (Tw) has gained considerable attention as a crucial indicator of heat-related health risks. Here we report south-to-north spatially heterogeneous trends of Tw in China over 1979-2018. We find that actual water vapor pressure (Ea) changes play a dominant role in determining the different trend of Tw in southern and northern China, which is attributed to the faster warming of high-latitude regions of East Asia as a response to climate change. This warming effect regulates large-scale atmospheric features and leads to extended impacts of the South Asia high (SAH) and the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) over southern China and to suppressed moisture transport. Attribution analysis using climate model simulations confirms these findings. We further find that the entire eastern China, that accommodates 94% of the country's population, is likely to experience widespread and uniform elevated thermal stress the end of this century. Our findings highlight the necessity for development of adaptation measures in eastern China to avoid adverse impacts of heat stress, suggesting similar implications for other regions as well. Attributing spatially heterogeneous heat stress trends to water vapor pressure changes driven by climate change-induced rapid warming in high-latitudes of East Asia, the authors predict widespread and uniform future heat stress in eastern China. The impacts of Arctic sea ice on climate in middle and high latitudes have been extensively studied. However, its effects on climate in low latitudes, particularly on summer monsoon rainfall in the South China Sea (SCS), have received limited attention. Thus, this study investigates the connection between the Arctic sea ice concentration (SIC) anomaly and the early summer monsoon rainfall (ESMR) in the SCS and its underlying physical mechanism. The results reveal a significant positive correlation between the Barents Sea (BS) SIC in May and the ESMR in the SCS. When there is more (less) SIC in the Barents Sea (BS) during May, this results in a positive (negative) anomaly of the local turbulent heat flux, which lasts until June. This, in turn, excites an upward (downward) air motion anomaly in the vicinity of the BS, causing a corresponding downward (upward) motion anomaly over the Black Sea. Consequently, this triggers a wave train similar to the Eurasian (SEU) teleconnection, propagating eastward towards East Asia. The SEU further leads to an (a) upward (downward) motion anomaly and weakens (strengthens) the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) over the SCS, which is accompanied by a southwest adequate (scarce) water vapor anomaly transporting from the Indian Ocean, resulting in more (less) precipitation in the SCS. Furthermore, the response of ESMR in the SCS to the SIC in the BS is further verified by using the Community Atmosphere Model version 5.3 (CAM5.3). This study introduces novel precursor factors that influence the South China Sea summer monsoon (SCSSM), presenting a new insight for climate prediction in this region, which holds significant implications. Land surface processes play an important role in the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) system. Parameterization schemes of land surface processes may cause uncertainties in regional climate model (RCM) studies for the EASM. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of a RCM to land surface parameterization (LSP) schemes for long-term simulation of the EASM. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model coupled with four different LSP schemes (Noah-MP, CLM4, Pleim-Xiu and SSiB), hereafter referred to as Sim-Noah, Sim-CLM, Sim-PX and Sim-SSiB respectively, have been applied for 22-summer EASM simulations. The 22-summer averaged spatial distributions and strengths of downscaled large-scale circulation, 2-m temperature and precipitation are comprehensively compared with ERA-Interim reanalysis and dense station observations in China. Results show that the downscaling ability of RCM for the EASM is sensitive to LSP schemes. Furthermore, this study confirms that RCM does add more information to the EASM compared to reanalysis that imposes the lateral boundary conditions (LBC) because it provides 2-m temperature and precipitation that are with higher resolution and more realistic compared to LBC. For 2-m temperature and monsoon precipitation, Sim-PX and Sim-SSiB simulations are more consistent with observation than simulations of Sim-Noah and Sim-CLM. To further explore the physical and dynamic mechanisms behind the RCM sensitivity to LSP schemes, differences in the surface energy budget between simulations of Ens-Noah-CLM (ensemble mean averaging Sim-Noah and Sim-CLM) and Ens-PX-SSiB (ensemble mean averaging Sim-PX and Sim-SSiB) are investigated and their subsequent impacts on the atmospheric circulation are analyzed. It is found that the intensity of simulated sensible heat flux over Asian continent in Ens-Noah-CLM is stronger than that in Ens-PX-SSiB, which induces a higher tropospheric temperature in Ens-Noah-CLM than in Ens-PX-SSiB over land. The adaptive modulation of geopotential height gradients affects wind field (through geostrophic balance) simulation especially at lower levels, which subsequently affects the simulation of large-scale circulation, 2-m temperature and monsoon precipitation as well as RCM's downscaling ability. Drought risk threatens pastoralism in rangelands, which are already under strain from climatic and socioeconomic changes. We examine the future drought risk (2031–2060 and 2071–2100) to rangeland productivity across Eurasia (West, Central, and East Asia) using a well-tested process-based ecosystem model and projections of five climate models under three shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios of low (SSP1−2.6), medium (SSP3−7.0), and high (SSP5−8.5) warming relative to 1985–2014. We employ a probabilistic approach, with risk defined as the expected productivity loss induced by the probability of hazardous droughts (determined by a precipitation-based index) and vulnerability (the response of rangeland productivity to hazardous droughts). Drought risk and vulnerability are projected to increase in magnitude and area across Eurasian rangelands, with greater increases in 2071–2100 under the medium and high warming scenarios than in 2031–2060. Increasing risk in West Asia is caused by longer and more intense droughts and vulnerability, whereas higher risk in Central and East Asia is mainly associated with increased vulnerability, indicating overall risk is higher where vulnerability increases. These findings suggest that future droughts may exacerbate livestock feed shortages and negatively impact pastoralism. The results have practical implications for rangeland management that should be adapted to the ecological and socioeconomic contexts of the different countries in the region. Existing traditional ecological knowledge can be promoted to adapt to drought risk and embedded in a wider set of adaptation measures involving management improvements, social transformations, capacity building, and policy reforms addressing multiple stakeholders. The concentration of carbonaceous aerosols, black carbon (BC) and organic aerosol (OA), in the atmosphere is related to co-emitted or co-produced trace gases. In this study, we investigate the most relevant proportional relationships between both BC and OA with the following trace gases: carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). One motivation for selecting these trace gases is that they can be observed using remote sensing measurements from satellite instrumentation, and could therefore be used to predict spatial changes in the amounts of BC and OA. Airborne measurements are optimal for the analysis of both the composition of aerosols and trace gases in different environments ranging from unpolluted oceanic air masses to those in heavily polluted city plumes. The two aircraft campaigns of the EMeRGe (Effect of Megacities on the Transport and Transformation of Pollutants on the Regional to Global Scales) project have created a unique database, with flight plans dedicated to studying city plumes in two regions, Europe (2017) and East Asia (2018), along with identical instrumental payload. Using linear regression analysis, three relevant relationships between carbonaceous aerosol and trace gases are identified: - The BC/OA ratio observed in the Asian campaign is three times higher (≈ 0.3) than in the European campaign (≈ 0.1), whereas the Pearson correlation coefficient (R) between BC and OA is much higher in Europe (R ≈ 0.8) than in Asia (R ≈ 0.6). - The CO/BC ratio is also observed higher in the Asian campaign (≈ 240) than in the European campaign (≈ 170), whereas the R-value between CO and BC is similar for both campaigns (R ≈ 0.7). - The HCHO/OA ratio is similar in both campaigns (≈0.32), but the observed R-values between HCHO and OA is higher in Europe than in the Asia (R ≈ 0.7 compared to ≈ 0.3). By focusing on heavily polluted air masses sampled downwind in the city plumes, the ratios between the observed carbonaceous aerosols and the five trace gases change, and the R-values increase with O3 for both BC and OA (R ≈ 0.5). To assess the performance of atmospheric models with respect to the most relevant observed relationships, an air quality model ensemble is used to represent the current state of atmospheric modeling, consisting of two global and two regional simulations. The evaluation shows that these proportional relationships are not satisfactorily reproduced by the model ensemble. The relationships between BC and OA or between CO and BC are modeled with stronger correlations than the observed ones, and their higher ratios observed in Asia compared to Europe are not reproduced. Furthermore, the modeled HCHO/OA ratio is underestimated in the Asian campaign and overestimated in the European campaign. This analysis of the proportional relationships between carbonaceous aerosols and trace gases implies that the observed relationships can be used to constrain models and improve anthropogenic emission inventories. In addition, it implies that information about the lower tropospheric concentration of carbonaceous aerosols can potentially be inferred from satellite retrievals of trace gases, particularly in the plumes from megacities. The performance of the Meteorological Research Institute-Atmospheric General Circulation model version 3.2 (MRI-AGCM3.2) in simulating precipitation is compared with that of global atmospheric models registered to the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). The Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) experiments simulated by 36 Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM)s and the High Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP) highresSST-present experiments simulated by 23 AGCMs were analyzed. Simulations by MRI-AGCM3.2S (20-km grid size) and MRI-AGCM3.2H (60-km grid size) are included as a part of the HighResMIP highresSST-present experiments. MRI-AGCM3.2S has the highest horizontal resolution of all 59 AGCMs. As for the global distribution of seasonal and annual average precipitation, monthly precipitation over East Asia, and the seasonal march of rainy zone over Japan, MRI-AGCM3.2 models perform better than or equal to CMIP6 AMIP AGCMs and HighResMIP AGCMs. HighResMIP AGCMs (average grid size 78 km) perform better than CMIP6 AMIP AGCMs (180 km) in simulating seasonal and annual precipitation over the globe, and summer (June to August) precipitation over East Asia. MRI-AGCM3.2 models perform better than or equal to CMIP6 AMIP AGCMs and HighResMIP AGCMs in simulating extreme precipitation events over the globe. Correlation analysis between grid size and model performance using all 59 models revealed that higher horizontal resolution models are better than lower resolution models in simulating the global distribution of seasonal and annual precipitation and the global distribution of intense precipitation, and the local distribution of summer precipitation over East Asia. Organic aerosols from marine sources over the western Pacific Ocean of East Asia were investigated using an online coupled regional chemistry–climate model RIEMS-Chem for the entire year 2014. Model evaluation against a wide variety of observations from research cruises and in situ measurements demonstrated a good skill of the model in simulating temporal variation and spatial distribution of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 and 10 µm (PM 2.5 and PM 10), black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), sodium, and aerosol optical depth (AOD) in the marine atmosphere. The inclusion of marine organic aerosols improved model performance on OC concentration by reducing model biases of up to 20 %. The regional and annual mean near-surface marine organic aerosol (MOA) concentration was estimated to be 0.27 µgm-3 , with the maximum in spring and the minimum in winter, and contributed 26 % of the total organic aerosol concentration on average over the western Pacific. Marine primary organic aerosol (MPOA) accounted for the majority of marine organic aerosol (MOA) mass, and the MPOA concentration exhibited the maximum in autumn and the minimum in summer, whereas marine secondary organic aerosol (MSOA) was approximately 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than MPOA, having a distinct summer maximum and a winter minimum. MOA induced a direct radiative effect (DRE MOA) of - 0.27 Wm-2 and an indirect radiative effect (IRE MOA) of - 0.66 Wm-2 at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) in terms of annual and oceanic average over the western Pacific, with the highest seasonal mean IRE MOA up to - 0.94 Wm-2 in spring. IRE MOA was stronger than, but in a similar magnitude to, the IRE due to sea salt aerosol on average, and it was approximately 9 % of the IRE due to anthropogenic aerosols in terms of annual mean over the western Pacific. This ratio increased to 19 % in the northern parts of the western Pacific in autumn. This study explores the differences in performance and results by various versions of the ISORROPIA thermodynamic module implemented within the ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) model. Three different versions of the module were used, ISORROPIA II v1, ISORROPIA II v2.3, and ISORROPIA-lite. First, ISORROPIA II v2.3 replaced ISORROPIA II v1 in EMAC to improve pH predictions close to neutral conditions. The newly developed ISORROPIA-lite has been added to EMAC alongside ISORROPIA II v2.3. ISORROPIA-lite is more computationally efficient and assumes that atmospheric aerosols exist always as supersaturated aqueous (metastable) solutions, while ISORROPIA II includes the option to allow for the formation of solid salts at low RH conditions (stable state). The predictions of EMAC by employing all three aerosol thermodynamic models were compared to each other and evaluated against surface measurements from three regional observational networks in the polluted Northern Hemisphere (Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE), European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP), and Acid Deposition Monitoring Network of East Asia (EANET)). The differences between ISORROPIA II v2.3 and ISORROPIA-lite were minimal in all comparisons with the normalized mean absolute difference for the concentrations of all major aerosol components being less than 11 % even when different phase state assumptions were used. The most notable differences were lower aerosol concentrations predicted by ISORROPIA-lite in regions with relative humidity in the range of 20 % to 60 % compared to the predictions of ISORROPIA II v2.3 in stable mode. The comparison against observations yielded satisfactory agreement especially over the USA and Europe but higher deviations over East Asia, where the overprediction of EMAC for nitrate was as high as 4 µ g m -3 (∼20%). The mean annual aerosol pH predicted by ISORROPIA-lite was on average less than a unit lower than ISORROPIA II v2.3 in stable mode, mainly for coarse-mode aerosols over the Middle East. The use of ISORROPIA-lite accelerated EMAC by nearly 5 % compared to the use of ISORROPIA II v2.3 even if the aerosol thermodynamic calculations consume a relatively small fraction of the EMAC computational time. Based on outputs of 28 coupled models from the Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), we show that the response of the Southeast Asian summer monsoon to the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) during post‐ENSO summer will likely strengthen in a warmer climate, which can be attributed to concurrently weakened sea‐surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the western equatorial Pacific (WEP). The weakened WEP SSTAs are primarily caused by enhanced latent heat damping due to increased surface wind speed anomalies, which are associated with the eastward shift of the El Niño‐induced anomalous Walker circulation due to El Niño‐like sea surface temperature change in the tropical Pacific under global warming. Besides, the climatological zonal ocean currents will slow down due to the weakening of climatological Walker circulation, which also acts to weaken the WEP SSTAs via reducing the advection of anomalous temperature by the mean current. The cosmogenic radionuclides 7 Be and 10 Be are useful tracers for atmospheric transport studies. Combining 7 Be and 10 Be measurements with an atmospheric transport model can not only improve our understanding of the radionuclide transport and deposition processes but also provide an evaluation of the transport process in the model. To simulate these aerosol tracers, it is critical to evaluate the influence of radionuclide production uncertainties on simulations. Here we use the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model driven by the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis to simulate 7 Be and 10 Be with the state-of-the-art production rate from the CRAC:Be (Cosmic Ray Atmospheric Cascade: Beryllium) model considering realistic spatial geomagnetic cutoff rigidities (denoted as P16spa). We also perform two sensitivity simulations: one with the default production rate in GEOS-Chem based on an empirical approach (denoted as LP67) and the other with the production rate from the CRAC:Be but considering only geomagnetic cutoff rigidities for a geocentric axial dipole (denoted as P16). The model results are comprehensively evaluated with a large number of measurements including surface air concentrations and deposition fluxes. The simulation with the P16spa production can reproduce the absolute values and temporal variability of 7 Be and 10 Be surface concentrations and deposition fluxes on annual and sub-annual scales, as well as the vertical profiles of air concentrations. The simulation with the LP67 production tends to overestimate the absolute values of 7 Be and 10 Be concentrations. The P16 simulation suggests less than 10 % differences compared to P16spa but a significant positive bias (∼18 %) in the 7 Be deposition fluxes over East Asia. We find that the deposition fluxes are more sensitive to the production in the troposphere and downward transport from the stratosphere. Independent of the production models, surface air concentrations and deposition fluxes from all simulations show similar seasonal variations, suggesting a dominant meteorological influence. The model can also reasonably simulate the stratosphere–troposphere exchange process of 7 Be and 10 Be by producing stratospheric contribution and 10Be/7Be ratio values that agree with measurements. Finally, we illustrate the importance of including the time-varying solar modulations in the production calculation, which significantly improve the agreement between model results and measurements, especially at mid-latitudes and high latitudes. Reduced uncertainties in the production rates, as demonstrated in this study, improve the utility of 7 Be and 10 Be as aerosol tracers for evaluating and testing transport and scavenging processes in global models. The variability of the summer North Pacific Subtropical High (NPSH) has substantial socioeconomic impacts. However, state‐of‐the‐art climate models significantly disagree on the response of the NPSH to anthropogenic warming. Inter‐model spread in NPSH projections originates from models' inconsistency in simulating tropical precipitation changes. This inconsistency in precipitation changes is partly due to inter‐model spread in tropical sea surface temperature (SST) changes, but it can also occur independently of uncertainty in SST changes. Here, we show that both types of precipitation uncertainty influence the NPSH via the Matsuno‐Gill wave response, but their relative impact varies by region. Through the modulation of low cloud fraction, inter‐model spread of the NPSH can have a further impact on extra‐tropical land surface temperature. The teleconnection between tropical precipitation and the NPSH is examined through a series of numerical experiments. The ozone valley over the Tibetan Plateau (OVTP) has experienced significant interannual variations during the past decades. Previous studies have primarily focused on the origins of OVTP rather than its climate impact. This study reveals that OVTP during its peak season (May–July) explains up to 15% of the summer precipitation variability in East Asia. The results suggest that the surface temperature (Ts) anomaly over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) acts as a link between OVTP and East Asian precipitation. Through the positive land-atmosphere feedback, the Ts anomaly over the TP is amplified. The anomalous Ts pattern persists into summer (June–August) due to the land memory effect and impacts the East Asian precipitation by modulating the local circulation. The Specified-Chemistry version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model is employed to validate that MJJ OVTP results in a substantial increase of Ts over TP and induces an anomalous anti-cyclone centered over the Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin during summer. Consequently, negative precipitation anomalies are observed in the Yangtze River Basin, while positive precipitation anomalies occur in Southern China. The linear baroclinic model further demonstrates that the diabatic heating over the TP serves as the link between MJJ OVTP and East Asian summer precipitation patterns. The multi-year simulation of tropical cyclones (TCs) over the Western North Pacific (WNP) in the variable resolution (VR) CAM-MPAS model is studied. Experiments with the global quasi-uniform low resolution of 120 km (MPAS-UR) and the variable resolution mesh of 30–120 km refined over East Asia (MPAS-VR) are integrated from 1980 to 2005 following the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project protocol. By utilizing an objective detection method, TCs in ERA5 reanalysis and model simulations are tracked and compared against observations. MPAS-VR shows significant advantages over MPAS-UR as indicated by more realistic TC counts, intensities, lifetime distribution, and seasonal variation. The large-scale circulation and precipitation patterns associated with TCs are also improved in MPAS-VR relative to MPAS-UR. Based on the theory of Dynamic Genesis Potential Index, the multi-year TC records are further used to quantify the dependence of TC genesis on various dynamical environmental factors from the perspective of seasonal variation. We find that in ERA5, the relative contribution of the 500 hPa vertical pressure velocity term to TC genesis exceeds that of the 200–850 hPa vertical wind shear term, which is responsible for the August peak and strong seasonal variation of TC genesis. MPAS-UR fails to capture such relationship while MPAS-VR performs much better in this regard, suggesting that the higher skills in simulating the relative contributions from different dynamical environmental factors to the simulated seasonal cycle of TC genesis may explain the improvements from MPAS-UR to MPAS-VR. The effect of model resolution on the simulation of tropical cyclone (TC) landfall frequency in East Asia [including the South China Sea (SCS), Taiwan and coastal areas of East China (TWCN) and Japan (JP)] was investigated by comparing Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) type simulations on the basis of 50-km High Resolution Atmospheric Models (HiRAMs) and 25-km HiRAM. The number of TC landfalls in the TWCN region was realistically simulated by the 50-km HiRAM ensemble model. However, fewer (more) TCs were steered westward (northward) toward the SCS (JP) because of an overestimation of the monsoon trough in the western North Pacific (WNP). The overestimation created a low-level cyclonic circulation anomaly in the WNP, which substantially modified steering flow. Consequently, more (less) TC made landfall in JP (SCS). The overestimation of the monsoon trough in model was primarily resulted from compounding factors, including the AMIP type simulation, upscale feedback of TCs to mean flow and the monsoon flow–topography interaction in the Indochina Peninsula Mountains and Philippine. First, the SST was negatively correlated with precipitation in the WNP during the typhoon season for the observation. Conversely, the SST–precipitation relationship was positive in the AMIP run. Second, the upscale feedback of TCs to mean flow (monsoon trough) was overestimated, which in term contributed to the overestimation of monsoon trough. Third, the model underestimated the mountain lifting effect in the Indochina Peninsula and Philippine. Overall, the aforementioned biases were substantially improved by increasing model's horizontal resolution from 50-km to 25-km HiRAM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Northern Hemispheric summer monsoons were more intense during the mid-Holocene (MH ~ 6000 years ago) and coincided with a northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) compared to the pre-industrial (PI) climate. Ancient civilizations in the Indus valley, Mesopotamia, and Egypt appear to have flourished during this period, thanks to abundant water availability. This study exploits a high-resolution variable grid global atmosphere model to understand the role of orbital forcing and ocean surface conditions in strengthening the monsoons and shifting the ITCZ northward over Africa, India, and East Asia during the MH. The combined impact of orbital forcing and sea surface temperature (SST) boundary conditions led to a change in monsoon rainfall of around 42, 30, 21, and 41% over Africa, East Asia, India, and northwest India (NWI) relative to the PI conditions. Changes in orbital parameters alone account for more than 36 and 26% of total rainfall increases in Africa and East Asia. Over the Indian subcontinent, the strengthening of monsoon was primarily a combined effect of SST and orbital forcing. In contrast, the SST boundary condition alone could explain the 39% of rainfall increase over NWI, where the Indus valley civilization once existed. Through moisture budget analysis, the study further illustrates the role of dynamic and thermodynamic factors responsible for the changes in monsoon precipitation. The enhanced monsoon resulted in a northward shift of ITCZ by around 3°N, 1.9°N, and 2.5°N over Africa, East Asia, and India, respectively, compared to its PI position. Analogous to the precipitation changes, orbital forcing mostly mediated ITCZ changes across Africa and East Asia, but the combined impact of orbital forcing and SST was responsible for the changes over India. Five regional climate models (RCMs)—CCLM, RegCM, HadGEM3‐RA, SNURCM and WRF—participating in the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment‐East Asia (CORDEX‐EA) Phase 2 project are evaluated for their ability to simulate spatiotemporal variability in Asian summer precipitation. For this purpose, two dynamical downscaling sets, experiments forced by ERA‐Interim reanalysis data (reproduction experiment) and historical data from three Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) general circulation models (GCMs) (historical experiment) are analysed. The horizontal resolution of the downscaled results is 25 km, and the analysis period is from 1981 to 2005 (25 years). The RCMs show reasonable performance in simulating the spatial and temporal characteristics of summer precipitation in CORDEX‐EA Phase 2 domain. To assess spatiotemporal patterns in Asian precipitation, cyclostationary empirical orthogonal function (CSEOF) analysis is used. In the first mode representing seasonal variations, the model ensemble results of both the reproduction experiment (Rep_ENS) and the historical experiment (His_ENS) simulate the peak times, location of precipitation and progression of the monsoons in Asia reasonably. Their features are greatly influenced by the moisture flux, indicating that the relation between precipitation and 850 hPa moisture flux is depicted well by RCM ensembles. In the second mode, which represents intraseasonal variations, the Rep_ENS depicts the western North Pacific summer monsoon break (WNPSM break) phenomenon similar to the observation. Although the His_ENS simulates the WNPSM break later than the observation, it does present the intraseasonal variation in the East Asian summer monsoon region. Based on these results, the five RCM ensemble results show the ability to capture spatiotemporal characteristics of summer precipitation in CORDEX‐EA Phase 2 domain, as well as added value from dynamical downscaling. Strong East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) can enhance the Maritime Continent rainfall (MCR) via frequent southward penetration of cold air along the coast of East Asia. However, such impact diminished after the late‐1990s, primarily due to the weakened covariation between the Siberian high and Aleutian low (AL). During 1979–1998, the co‐variability between the Siberian high and AL facilitates a strong east‐west pressure gradient over East Asia. The resultant northerlies invade southward and facilitate the enhanced MCR. In contrast, such covariation is weak during 2000–2018, and it impedes the southward invasion of northerly winds and diminishes EAWM's impact. Further inspections indicate that the weakened covariation is primarily caused by the reduced variability of the AL. The underlying mechanism is confirmed by the historical simulation of version 6 Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC6) that participates in phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project and numerical experiments with European Center‐Hamburg atmospheric model version 6.3 (ECHAM6). The extended‐range predictability of three simulated extreme cold events in East Asia in the Community Atmosphere Model (version 4) control experiment, whose atmospheric circulation backgrounds are similar to two recent observational cases, is investigated. The results show that they have a predictability of four pentads. Then, we evaluate the extent of the forecast uncertainty in the 4th pentad caused by the initial atmospheric uncertainties in the Arctic, which are large due to sparse instrumental observations. The initial uncertainty leading to the largest forecast uncertainty is obtained by the conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation method, and referred to as the CNOP‐type initial uncertainty. The forecast of the cold surge in the 4th pentad fails after adding the CNOP‐type initial uncertainty at day 0. In comparison, the forecast uncertainties are much weaker when the initial conditions are perturbed by noises, and the weaker influence may be due to the noises' lack of spatial structure. In terms of how the CNOP‐type initial uncertainty develops, a baroclinic structure is seen in the uncertainties on the first 2 days, followed by a propagating Rossby wave feature from the 2nd pentad to the 4th pentad. Meanwhile, synoptic transient eddy feedback also plays an essential role. The results suggest that the CNOP‐type initial uncertainty has potential to identify sensitive areas for targeted observations; plus, it could serve as a member of ensemble initial perturbations, since it indicates the largest uncertainty growth. Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) downstream of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) exhibit unique precipitation features. These MCSs can have damaging impacts and there is a critical need for improving the representation of MCSs in numerical models. However, most global climate models are typically run at resolutions that are too coarse to reasonably resolve MCSs, and it is still unclear how well higher-resolution global models can reproduce the precipitation characteristics of MCSs. In this study, the sensitivity of MCSs simulated by a global high resolution (~ 10 km), atmosphere-only climate model to different treatments of convection (with and without parametrized convection, and a hybrid representation of convection) have been investigated. The results show that explicit convection (i.e., non-parameterized) can better reproduce the observed pattern of MCS precipitation over the East Asian Summer Monsoon region. In general, explicit convection better simulates the diurnal variability of MCSs over the eastern China, and is able to represent the distinctive diurnal variations of MCS precipitation over complex terrain particularly well, such as the eastern TP and the complex terrain of central-northern China. It is shown that explicit convection is better at simulating the timing of initiation and subsequent propagating features of the MCS, resulting in better diurnal variations and further a better spatial pattern of summer mean MCS precipitation. All three experiments simulate MCS rainfall areas which are notably smaller than those in observations, but with much stronger rainfall intensities, implying that these biases in simulated MCS morphological characteristics are not sensitive to the different treatment of convection. Coupled climate models project robust wintertime wetting trend over midlatitude East Asia under global warming scenarios, but the projected change in precipitation shows large intermodel uncertainty over subtropical East Asia from southern China to southwestern Japan. Based on an ensemble of climate models participating in CMIP6, this study shows that the weakened southern branch westerly jet (SWJ) on the southern side of Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a key role in suppressing subtropical East Asian precipitation. The SWJ is deflected into southwesterly wind on the southeastern side of TP, bringing ascent and precipitation to subtropical East Asia primarily through isentropic gliding. As a result of the poleward and upward shift of the planetary-scale westerly jet under global warming, the SWJ becomes weaker and it acts to suppress subtropical East Asian precipitation by weakening the southwesterly wind and ascent. The SWJ-precipitation linkage also exists on interannual time scales, but the sensitivity of precipitation to interannual SWJ variability is systematically underestimated by the models compared with observation. The combined effects of the change in SWJ strength and the sensitivity of precipitation to SWJ explain about 40% of the intermodel spread of the projected precipitation changes. Observational constraint on the SWJ--precipitation relationship amplifies the projected drying trend and narrows the intermodel spread. It shows that the regional-averaged precipitation over subtropical East Asia decreases by 3.3% per degree of warming, and the amplitude of precipitation reduction over subtropical East Asia (southern China) is about 1.4 (3.4) times the raw projection. In this study, we developed a regional coupled model for the western North Pacific (WNP) and East Asian region. The atmospheric/oceanic component of the coupled model was the Weather Research and Forecasting and the Regional Ocean Modeling System, coupled through the National Center for Atmospheric Research Coupler version 7 (CPL7). An evaluation is provided through the simulation of the climatology and interannual variability of the summer monsoon climate from 1982 to 2015. The coupled model is also compared with a solely atmospheric run, which is driven by the observed sea surface temperature (SST) as the surface boundary. The results show that the coupled model has good capability in modeling the climate in the WNP and East Asian domain, including the climatology of summer precipitation and circulation, the subseasonal (month‐to‐month) variation in the western Pacific subtropical high and associated precipitation, and the seasonal cycle of the East Asian rain belt. One merit of this model is its ability to simulate the northward and eastward shift from early to late summer. With respect to the interannual variability, the model captures the spatial pattern of the leading mode of summer precipitation, with a north–south dipole mode in the studied region. The model also reproduces the larger SST variability in the northern part of this region. The temporal correlation coefficient between the coupled simulation and observation was 0.70 for the precipitation and 0.53 for the SST leading mode. The coupled model also captures the precipitation–SST relationship, which results from reasonably considering the air–sea coupling processes in the coupled run. This study estimates short-term climate feedbacks by using a new set of radiative kernels applied to observations and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) simulations. The new kernels are generated based on multiyear satellite observations, and they can well reproduce the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation budget. The choice of radiative kernels influences the feedback estimation, especially the surface albedo feedback and cloud feedback in the Arctic and the Southern Ocean. Observational estimates show that tropospheric water vapor feedback makes the largest contribution to global warming, while lapse rate feedback is the largest contributor to local warming over East Asia. Compared to the observations, biases occur but differ when simulating global and East Asian local climate feedbacks. CMIP6 models overestimate global mean Planck, lapse rate, stratospheric temperature and water vapor, and cloud feedbacks, but underestimate global mean tropospheric water vapor and surface albedo feedbacks. Over East Asia, local Planck and lapse rate feedbacks are underestimated, while tropospheric water vapor, stratospheric temperature, and cloud feedbacks are overestimated. The simulation biases in local longwave (LW) and shortwave (SW) cloud feedbacks over East Asia are considerable, probably due to the failure in simulating cloud fraction response of marine cirrostratus, deep convective cloud, and stratus. The intermodel spread of cloud feedback is the largest for both global and East Asian local feedback processes. The impact of autumn Arctic sea ice reduction on the winter climate in Eurasia has been widely studied, but the role of the atmospheric circulation of the preceding summer has been mostly neglected. This study investigates a linkage between the summer Arctic circulation anomaly and the ensuing East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) variability. The Arctic circulation anomaly, characterized by an anomalous anti‐cyclone occupying the Arctic Ocean and its marginal seas, can strongly melt Arctic sea ice in the Kara Sea‐Laptev Sea‐East Siberian Sea‐Chukchi Sea‐Beaufort Sea through dynamic and thermodynamic processes. The combination of the summer anti‐cyclone (cyclone) anomaly and light (heavy) autumn sea ice leads to an enhanced (weakened) EAWM. By introducing the coupling relationship between summer circulation and autumn sea ice into numerical experiments, the Community Atmospheric Model version 4 model has a good capability for capturing EAWM variability. Nevertheless, the dominant features of EAWM variability cannot be reproduced when the autumn sea ice mismatches the preceding summer circulation in the model. Therefore, the preceding summer circulation may modulate the impact of sea ice on Eurasia to some extent, which may increase uncertainties in the impact of Arctic sea ice loss on winter atmospheric circulation variability. Despite knowledge of the presence of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in reorganizing large-scale atmospheric circulation, it remains unclear how surface albedo darkening over TP will impact local glaciers and remote Asian monsoon systems. Here, we use a coupled land-atmosphere global climate model and a glacier model to address these questions. Under a high-emission scenario, TP surface albedo darkening will increase local temperature by 0.24 K by the end of this century. This warming will strengthen the elevated heat pump of TP, increasing South Asian monsoon precipitation while exacerbating the current "South Flood-North Drought" pattern over East Asia. The albedo darkening-induced climate change also leads to an accompanying TP glacier volume loss of 6.9%, which further increases to 25.2% at the equilibrium, with a notable loss in western TP. Our findings emphasize the importance of land-surface change responses in projecting future water resource availability, with important implications for water management policies. Impacts of Tibetan Plateau darkening remain unclear. Parameterization schemes such as soil thermal conductivity (STC) have an important impact on precipitation simulation. The precipitation in the rainy season (April–September) is the main factor affecting aridification in northern China. However, it is unclear how STC affects precipitation simulation during the rainy season. In this study, comparative experiments were conducted using the regional climate model RegCM4.6 coupled with the third-generation land surface model NCAR CLM4.5 to assess the effect of the Johansen and Lu–Ren STC schemes on precipitation. The results show that the STC had a significant effect on the simulation of rainy season precipitation and its variation in northern China. The precipitation variation characteristics simulated by the Lu–Ren scheme were closer than that of the Johansen scheme to the observation. The difference in land surface temperatures (LSTs) simulated by the two STC schemes could be a major cause of the sensitivity in the simulated precipitation. When the local LST increases by 1 K, precipitation decreases by 5–30 mm in most areas of northern China. The numerical experiments revealed that the rise of LST increases the longwave radiation, reduces the surface net radiation, and causes the redistribution of sensible and latent heat flux, forming local water vapor and thermal conditions that are not conducive to precipitation. Moreover, the difference of LST significantly changes the 500-hPa large-scale circulation field, the 700-hPa vapor transportation, and its divergence. The combined action of local heat, water vapor, and large-scale circulation factors reduces the precipitation in the rainy season. On the other side, the variation of the East Asia summer monsoon (EASM) affects the soil water content. Based on the 18 realizations of three state-of-the-art climate models participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), this paper examines the changes in climatology and trends of winter diurnal temperature range (DTR) over East Asia in response to natural and anthropogenic forcings. In the observation, the climatology of DTR during 1979–2014 displays a horizontal tile from southwest to northeast over East Asia. In addition, the observed DTR also presents an obviously declining trend in recent decades, with the magnitude of roughly −0.10 °C decade−1. The historical all-forcing simulations well reproduce the geographical distributions and magnitude of climatology and trends of winter DTR over East Asia in 1979–2014. Furthermore, the winter DTR exhibits a continuous declining trend from the historical scenario to the future SSP245 scenario over East Asia, with the most significant declining during the first half of twenty-first century (i.e., 2021–2060). Based on the individual forcing experiments, it suggests that the greenhouse gases forcing plays a primary role in driving the climatology and trends of DTR over East Asia, especially for the SSP245 scenario. We evaluate the performance of climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phases 5 (CMIP5) and 6 (CMIP6) in simulating the weather regimes over East Asia during the period from 1961 to 2005. The circulation patterns, frequencies and transition probabilities of the weather regimes are obtained by categorizing the daily 500‐hPa geopotential height (Z500) anomalies using the k‐means clustering algorithm. We identify four winter (WWR1‐4) and three summer weather regimes (SWR1‐3) in both reanalysis datasets and CMIP5/6 models. Significant increasing (declining) frequency trends in WWR3 (WWR4) and SWR2 (SWR1) are found in the ERA5 and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis datasets. On the whole, both generations of models demonstrate reasonable abilities to reproduce the circulation patterns of weather regimes based on the Z500 anomaly fields but overall underestimate the intensities of weather regime patterns, underestimate the occurrence frequencies of WWR3, SWR2, and SWR3, and overestimate the frequencies of WWR1, WWR2, WWR4, and SWR1. In terms of both the ensemble‐mean and pairwise comparisons, the CMIP6 models generally perform better than their CMIP5 counterparts in reproducing the circulation pattern intensities, occurrence frequencies during the whole period and the linear frequency trends and transition probabilities of the weather regimes both in winter and summer. Further analysis shows a highly positive correlation between the total frequency and transition performances but a lower correlation between the biases in the total frequency and intensity of weather regime patterns. The improved skill of CMIP6 over the CMIP5 models in reproducing the weather regimes over East Asia may be partly related to the increased vertical atmospheric resolution in the model. This study focused on the interdecadal variability in water vapour content (WVC) over East Asia during winter and its associated mechanisms. The interdecadal variation in the WVC over East Asia during winter was investigated using the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) method. The leading mode (EOF1, explained variance is 52.7%) of interdecadal variability in the WVC, which explains most of the interdecadal variation, exhibits a monopole pattern characterized by consistent WVC anomalies over East Asia. The mechanisms associated with the interdecadal variability in winter WVC over East Asia were further investigated, and it was found that the interdecadal variability in winter WVC over East Asia is modulated by three water vapour transport (WVT) branches from the eastern, western, and southern boundaries of East Asia that are associated with Eurasian winter circulation. Further analyses revealed that increased sea ice concentration over the Barents‐Kara Sea (SIC‐BKS) in October–November (ON) serves as the source of wave activity flux and stimulates a stationary wave train along the Eurasian continent to change the downstream atmospheric circulation. As a response, an abnormal cyclone, an abnormal anticyclone, and an abnormal cyclone are triggered over western Siberia, the northern area of East Asia, and the southern area of East Asia, which are together favourable for WVC sufficiency over East Asia. Sensitivity experiments by the Community Atmosphere Model, version 4 (CAM4) using sea ice forcing in the Barents Sea yield similar results to the observed data, further confirming our conclusion. During the winter and subsequent spring of an El Niño year, the East Asian marginal sea (EAMS) exhibits positive sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) and fewer low clouds, while the western North Pacific experiences negative SSTAs. In this study, we suggest that the positive SSTAs in EAMS are maintained by a positive low cloud–SST feedback. In neutral winters and springs, the EAMS is covered by low clouds, which have a cooling effect on surface temperatures. During an El Niño year, a western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone is established, and along its northwestern flank, there are favorable conditions for convergence of moisture and weaker surface latent heat flux over the EAMS. Once a positive SSTA has been established, a further reduction of turbulent mixing results in less low cloud and enhanced solar heating of the ocean mixed layer; this reinforces and maintains both the positive SSTA and the lack of low cloud via a positive feedback mechanism. The concurrent increase of low cloud–SST feedback and anticyclone circulation strengths is evident in the coupled-model simulations from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. Furthermore, sensitivity experiments, performed with the atmospheric components of Community Earth System Model (CESM2), reveal that a positive SSTA helps to maintain the western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone. Four pacemaker-coupled experiments by CESM2, with sea surface temperature in the equatorial Pacific restored to the observational anomalies plus the model climatology and altered low cloud feedback over EAMS, suggest that the low cloud–SST feedback results in more than the maintenance of a positive SSTA over the EAMS: the positive feedback is also a previously overlooked mechanism for the maintenance of the western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone. Significance Statement: The East Asian marginal sea (EAMS) and western North Pacific are important areas that bridge El Niño and the climate of East Asia. Unlike the cold sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) over the western North Pacific during El Niño, the positive SSTA over EAMS, which is covered by winter low cloud, has received less attention. We suggest that a "low cloud–SST" feedback—namely, one in which decreasing low-level clouds allows more sunlight to strike the ocean surface and favors higher SST—maintains the positive SSTA over EAMS. We also configure a widely used atmospheric model with a set of preset SSTA patterns that mimic different climate patterns. Our experiments with different climate patterns and CMIP6 historical runs show that the low cloud–SST feedback (through the positive SSTA) is a possible supplementary mechanism for reinforcing the WNP anomalous anticyclone. Precipitation change is critical for the Three-River Headwaters (TRH) region, which serves downstream communities in East Asia. The spring (March–May) precipitation over the TRH region shows an increasing trend from 1979 to 2018, as revealed by a Chinese gridded precipitation product (CN05.1). However, the physical processes responsible for this precipitation change are still unclear. This study investigated the characteristics of spring precipitation and the water budget over the TRH region using the ERA5 global reanalysis and the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) Model. The WRF version employed in this study includes online calculations of the atmospheric water budget and an evapotranspiration (ET) tagging procedure to trace evapotranspired water in the atmosphere. Both ERA5 and WRF reproduce the spring precipitation increase. Moreover, WRFD02 (with a 3-km domain) reduces the wet bias by around 60% and 77% compared to WRFD01 (9 km) and ERA5 (30 km). Both ERA5 and WRF demonstrate that the increase of spring precipitation is dominated by moisture convergence, especially the atmospheric water fluxes from the southern boundary. The enhanced moisture inflow is sustained by enhanced mass flux while the enhanced moisture outflow is sustained by increased moisture. The ET-tagging results further demonstrate the weakened precipitation recycling process because of the significant increase of precipitation produced by external moisture. Compared to ERA5, the reduced wet bias with WRF is attributed to a better spatial resolution of orographic barrier effects, which reduce the southerly water fluxes. Driven by the outputs of four global climate models from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5, a long-term downscaling and projection under the RCP8.5 scenario is conducted within the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment East Asia phase II framework with Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) and Regional Climate Model version 4 (RegCM4). All the single simulations and the ensembles well reproduce the spatial pattern of the precipitation amount over East Asia with the spatial correlations (SCORs) larger than 0.58, although bias exists in some areas. The models also reasonably present the spatial patterns of the extreme precipitation indices except the Rx5day (annual maximum consecutive 5-day precipitation) and the consecutive dry days (CDD), with the SCORs ranging between 0.43 and 0.71. In general, WRF outperforms RegCM4 in producing the spatial patterns of most extreme precipitation indices and RegCM4 generates lower root mean square errors. In the future, the precipitation amount would significantly increase in northeastern China and northwestern China and over the Tibetan Plateau, which is mainly due to the increase of precipitation intensity in WRF and frequency in RegCM4. The extreme frequency and intensity indices are projected to significantly increase over the Tibetan Plateau and some areas of northwestern China. In addition, the consecutive wet days will get significantly longer in the above regions, where the consecutive dry days will shorten, indicating more consecutive precipitation events in the future. The change in the probability distribution of the extreme indices reveals that stronger and longer-duration extreme precipitation events would get more frequent in the future. Within the frameworks of the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment‐East Asia first and second phase (CORDEX‐EA‐I and CORDEX‐EA‐II), the impact of spatial resolution, physical parameterization schemes and spectral nudging (SN) on simulating inland and offshore near‐surface wind speed over China is evaluated. By using WRF and RegCM4 models, the CORDEX‐EA simulations driven by the ERA‐Interim reanalysis data are conducted from 1989 to 2008. The regional climate models (RCMs) have the capacity to simulate the spatial patterns of surface wind, although significant overestimations exist over inland China. The WRF CORDEX‐EA‐II experiments with increasing horizontal resolution perform better in reproducing both inland and offshore wind speed than the CORDEX‐EA‐I experiments. Moreover, the experiments with SN can significantly reduce the positive biases of surface wind speed. For the temporal variation of wind speed, almost all the simulations show larger biases in winter than in summer. Particularly, the simulated wind speed in summer in the RegCM4 experiment with CLM3 land surface model (RCC‐II) is close to the observations. The extreme wind speed can be well reproduced by WRF simulations, and the SN experiments perform better than the experiments without SN (NOSN). In addition, the overestimations of surface wind speed can be partly explained by the overestimations of the wind field at 850 hPa level inherited from ERA‐Interim reanalysis and the increase of temperature gradient between the land and ocean in winter. The model uncertainty, one of the major sources of projection uncertainty, is still a challenge in the climate change projection. In this study, the model uncertainty in simulating the East Asian summer monsoon rainfall and its physical link to the upper‐level jet streams and the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) are investigated from the Coupled Model Inter‐comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. The results show that extracted by the inter‐model Empirical Orthogonal Function method, the leading inter‐model mode of the rainfall is characterized as a meridional pattern. The positive mode (a continent‐wet‐ocean‐dry pattern) is closely associated with a northward shift of the oceanic branch of the East Asian subtropical jet and a northward movement of the WNPSH, while the negative mode (a continent‐dry‐ocean‐wet pattern) is highly correlated with an enhanced East Asian polar‐front jet combined with a weakened land branch of the East Asian subtropical jet as well as a weakened and eastward recess of the WNPSH. This systematic link among the atmospheric circulations and the leading inter‐model mode is maintained by the negative phase of the Victoria Mode in the North Pacific and warming over the Atlantic Ocean in the positive mode, and the cooling over the Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and the warming over the central Pacific in the negative mode. Our findings suggest that the physical linkage between the atmospheric circulations and monsoon rainfall is useful to understand the model uncertainty, which would be helpful in providing potential indicators of the East Asia summer monsoon change. Plain Language Summary: Monsoon rainfall has profound economic and social impacts, however large uncertainties lie in the climate model simulations. In this study, the inter‐model spread is used to extract the model uncertainty for the East Asian summer monsoon rainfall. The leading inter‐model mode is a meridional dipole pattern, which is closely associated with the concurrent variations of jet streams and the intensity and meridional movement of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH), but with the asymmetric response. The associated jet stream and the WNPSH variations are sustained by the oceanic conditions over the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Indian Ocean, and therefore results in the inter‐model spread of the monsoon rainfall. This study investigates the contributing factors of East Asian heatwaves (EAHWs) linked to the Arctic-Siberian Plain (ASP) over the past 42 years (1979–2020). EAHWs are mainly affected by two time scales of variabilities: long-term externally forced and interannual variabilities. The externally forced EAHWs are attributed to the increasing global warming trend, while their interannual variability is related to the circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) and the ASP teleconnection patterns. In addition to the CGT, the Rossby wave energy originating from the ASP propagates to East Asia through the upper troposphere, amplifying the EAHWs. The stationary high pressure in the ASP is generated by vorticity advection in the upper troposphere. Enhanced surface radiative heating and evaporation on the ASP surface increase the specific humidity and temperature, amplifying the thermal high pressure via positive water vapor feedback. Thermal high-pressure amplified by land–atmosphere interactions in the ASP during the peak summer season leads to EAHWs by the propagation of stationary Rossby wave energy. The results indicate that our enhanced understanding of the ASP teleconnection can improve forecasting of the EAHWs not only on a sub-seasonal time scale but also in future projections of global climate models. Under the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment‐East Asia second phase (CORDEX‐EA‐II) framework, the performances of three regional climate models (RCMs), including Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, RegCM4 and Consortium for Small‐Scale Modelling model in Climate Mode (CCLM), in simulating the climatic distribution, diurnal variation and extremes of precipitation during 1989–2009 are evaluated. The RCMs are driven by the ERA‐Interim reanalysis and the evaluation is based on both the gridded gauge‐based and the satellite‐derived precipitation data. In general, the RCMs can reproduce the spatial pattern of the mean daily precipitation, with the spatial correlations (SCORs) larger than 0.66, and CCLM has the lowest root‐mean‐square error over East Asia. For the diurnal cycle of precipitation, WRF outperforms the other two RCMs despite the peak time about 3 hr ahead in some areas. RegCM4 overestimates the amplitude of the diurnal curve, and CCLM has limited ability to simulate the diurnal variation over most areas. All the three RCMs can reproduce the spatial patterns of the extreme indices, with the SCORs larger than 0.57. WRF and CCLM perform the best for the frequency of wet days (R1mm) and moderate rain (R20mm), respectively. The intensity indices are overestimated over most land areas, with relatively higher SCORs in WRF and relatively lower biases in RegCM4. The consecutive wet days (CWD) can be well simulated by WRF and CCLM; however, RegCM4 overestimates it over most regions in East Asia. The overestimation of the extreme intensity and frequency indices may be related to the higher water vapour content and the weaker water vapour divergence in the lower layer, as well as the higher mid‐layer geopotential height, especially in CCLM. Inconsistencies in the Eocene climates of East Asia have been revealed in both geological studies and simulations. Several earlier reconstructions showed an arid zonal band in mid‐latitude China, but others showed a humid climate in the same region. Moreover, previous Eocene modeling studies have demonstrated that climate models can simulate both scenarios in China. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the cause of this model spread. We conducted a series of experiments using Norwegian Earth System Model 1‐F and examined the impact of mountains in Southern China on the simulated Eocene climate. These mountains, including the Gangdese and Southeast Mountains, are located along the main path of water vapor transport to East Asia. Our results reveal that the Southeast Mountains play the dominant role in controlling the simulated precipitation in Eastern China during the Eocene. When the heights of the Southeast Mountains exceed ∼2,000 m, an arid zonal band appears in mid‐latitude China, whereas humid climates appear in Eastern China when the elevation of the Southeast Mountains is relatively low. Spatiotemporal modal analysis and prediction of tropospheric atmospheric CO concentration in the world and East Asia from 2002 to 2021 using the inversion data of airs sounder. The results show that: The CO concentration in the northern hemisphere is higher than that in the southern hemisphere; from the upper troposphere to the lower troposphere, the CO concentration changes from " ∧ " to "√"; the fluctuation range of near surface CO concentration in the northern hemisphere is relatively intense, and the fluctuation range in the southern hemisphere is relatively small. Using MK, Sen slope estimation, and EOF analysis, it is found that CO concentration in the convective middle layer tends to decline in more than 90% of the global area, and the decline rate in the northern hemisphere is significantly higher than that in the southern hemisphere. In East Asia, the CO concentration in the lower tropospheric marine area is significantly lower than that in the land area. The average concentration and decline rate of CO in East Asia is always higher than that in the world; the CO concentration in East Asia is the highest in spring and winter in the lower troposphere; and the CO concentration in East Asia is lower in the northeast and higher in the southeast in the upper troposphere in spring, autumn, and winter, and higher in the northeast and Central Plains in summer. Compared with the three-exponential smoothing model, the prediction error of the VMD-LSTM hybrid model for atmospheric CO concentration is significantly reduced, which indicates that the improved neural network prediction model has higher prediction accuracy. The factors affecting the change of tropospheric CO concentration are not only affected by the ground factors, but also related to indirect factors such as water vapor, methane, and atmospheric temperature in the atmosphere. A three-dimensional long-range atmospheric transport model for 222Rn and its progenies was applied to simulate 210Pb deposition in Japan and its adjacent waters. Monthly precipitation and 210Pb deposition simulated by the model for winter months were favorably compared with observational data although they were exceptionally underestimated in Aomori. The large monthly deposition along the Japan Sea coast lines during winter was successfully simulated by the model to be nearly 200 Bq m−2, which was contrasted by about 10-fold smaller deposition in other regions. It was also pointed out that the heavy deposition areas formed a narrow band structure along the coastline with width of several tens of kilometers and 210Pb deposition amount positively correlated with the height of mountains located leeward of the heavy deposition areas. Previous studies have projected an increase in future summer precipitation across East Asia (EA). This study investigates the relative contributions of thermodynamic and dynamic components to future precipitation changes in three key sub-regions of EA where the maximum centers of the historical precipitation are located (the tropical region, East China, and the Japan and Korea sector), and analyzes the causes of the changes in thermodynamic and dynamic components. Outputs from 30 climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) are used. From these, the five best-performing models for historical summer precipitation climatology for EA are selected. The future summer precipitations in the three sub-regions over the near- to mid-term (2020–2069) and the long-term (2070–2095) are then examined using the multi-model ensemble mean of the five models selected (MMM05). The projections were driven by four combined scenarios of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and forcing levels of the Representative Concentration Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). The results show that long-term precipitations under SSP5-8.5 are greater than those under the other scenarios across all sub-regions. After the 2070s under SSP5-8.5, a marked precipitation intensification is identified in all three sub-regions, but with different rates of increase. The projected precipitation increase is primarily attributed to the thermodynamic component, while the dynamic component related to circulation changes is relatively weak. Further analysis indicates that the pattern of the thermodynamic component in the three sub-regions is dominated by the climatological upward motion, mediated by an increase in moisture.
