Purpose To investigate the association between mental disorders and substance misuse at 30 years of age with gender, socioeconomic position at birth, and family income trajectories. Methods The 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort was used; all 5914 children born alive at hospital were originally enrolled (99.2% of all city births). In 2012, 3701 subjects were located and interviewed (68% retention rate). Mental disorders and substance misuse were assessed, and their prevalence analysed according to gender, socioeconomic status at birth, and four different income trajectories: always poor, never poor, poor at birth/non-poor at age 30, and non-poor at birth/poor at age 30. Results While women presented higher prevalence of mental disorders, substance misuse was much more frequent among men. Individuals in the lowest income quintile at birth presented 2–5 times more mental disorders and substance misuse than those in the highest quintile. Young adults who were always poor or were not poor at birth but were poor at 30 years of age had a higher prevalence of mental disorders than the other groups. Conclusions The high rates of mental disorders and lifetime suicide attempts in young adults, especially those who were always poor or became poor after childhood, suggest that recent socioeconomic-related stressful situations may have a higher impact on the current mental health than events earlier in life. However, we could not identify at what specific ages socioeconomic changes were more important. SOCIOLOGY , *EQUALITY , *MODERNITY , *MODERN society - Abstract
In this paper, we trace a conceptual roadmap aimed at reconciling a life course perspective with the sociology of class and social inequality. We begin by presenting the life course perspective, reflecting on the central role it grants to processes of institutional regulation. Taking stock of critiques to both atomist explanations of agency and structural determinisms, we advocate for a longitudinal reading of how inequalities shape individual and collective trajectories, mobilizing concepts advanced by Pierre Bourdieu. We then demonstrate the potential of this approach to discuss how life course trajectories unfold in late modernity, drawing on recent research on Portugal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Understand the centrality of work for the Brazilian emerging social class, known as "new" middle class. Originality/gap/relevance/implications: This paper contributes academically, since This paper aims at a recent phenomenon currently under debate. Since we are talking about a class in which work remains the centralizing element of their lives and, therefore, within the organizational world, it is of fundamental importance that the Organizational Studies add their contribution. Key methodological aspects: There are few papers written about this theme, so our paper was based on the systematic review of literature. Summary of key results: The simple and superficial association among class, income and consumption does not suffice to understand the complexity that lies behind the distinction structures and separation of classes. When we perceive society as a mere reproduction of the market, in other words, though income and consumption, we are perpetuating the naturalization of overexploitation of capital that posed as an individual modifying action. The accumulation has become something so subtle in society that we do not realize that the exaltation of income and consumption as responses to social changes is frivolous and hides all the symbolic domination of capitalism. Key considerations/conclusions: We claim there isn't the uprising of a new middle class, but a new working class. For these subjects, work remains the central and transforming element of their lives, which also allows access to what was once restricted to a small amount of the population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an approach to the identification of class ascriptions of the members of the human rights movement in Argentina. After observing a polyclassist integration of the social movement, it focuses on the dominance in its leadership and composition of members of the middle classes and sometimes more specifically of the service classes. First, some dimensions underlying the concept of "social class" are developed, and then, through different surveys, outline the composition of different human rights organizations. Finally, it is concluded that although class ascription was not decisive for the composition of the movement, it did lay the foundations for a shared political culture and for the adoption of discourse and action repertoires. - Abstract
This paper aims to reflect on the relevance of the ethnographic method to the seizure of social policies in the field of Food and Nutrition. It is based on data from a survey conducted in a community kitchen from a sorting and waste composting unit (UTC) - popularly known as "dump" - in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Porto Alegre-RS, Brazil. It is argued that the merit of this research is its traditional method, ethnography, which involves a set of concepts and procedures that will lead us to the point of view of the groups surveyed through an intensive work-site. Firstly we seek to bring some definitions and characterizations of social policies that address Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) as well as the ethnographic context; then, based on some ethnographic notes, we will try to elucidate, although initially, possible appropriations that actors do on the community kitchen and on other programs there. Without pretending to wind up the debate, at the end the discussion is in favor of the relevance of the method for a deep understanding of the directions given to social programs and to the questioning of the different logics that inhabit the context studied, allowing critically rethink the government's actions concerning FNS. This paper is part of a wider PhD study focusing on the impact of gender on the educational achievement of children in the early years of schooling with a focus on the impact of social class. The first part of the paper will address the methodological, practical and ethical issues and challenges that are encountered in educational research with children as young as three. Attempting to address such issues with young children themselves, rather than with their parents, teachers and other adult gatekeepers, adds further new dimensions and challenges to the research process. A discussion will be included in the paper on the feasibility of researching pre-school children and the impact of child centred research on the choice of suitable data collection methods. This discussion will include a consideration of young children's competency to participate in social research and their capacity to give informed consent, whilst simultaneously addressing the issue of power imbalances and the differing styles of communication between adults and children that must be bridged effectively for social research to be successful. As well as a consideration of gender and social class constructions and their relationship with educational achievement, issues around the re-conceptualisation of children as subjects of research, and the implications of this position for educational research, will be explored alongside practical and innovative suggestions for interviewing young children about their experiences. The data upon which this paper is based are taken from an ethnographic case study in one pre-school classroom in the northeast of Northern Ireland and will draw upon data gathered during detailed classroom observations and small, friendship grouped pupil interviews. Through a full discussion of the results of this study the second part of the paper will aim to explore the construction and maintenance of gender identities by those pupils involved, the discursive possibilities provided by the dominant gender discourse and how these possibilities prescribe not only how children learn but also what they learn. This will include a consideration of the gendered and educational discourses prevalent in the classroom, the pupils' stereotypical and often polarized play choices and friendship patterns and the perceived imbalance of ability between the genders. Issues of curriculum and assessment in the early years will be explored by drawing on data from a teacher interview and it will be argued that the diverse (and highly gendered) discursive possibilities in this pre-school setting may induce the construction of differing self or peer group imposed boundaries/obstacles to the learning opportunities of young children.

Changes in employment in the last decades suggest the emergence of a new working class. This article presents some data that show a process of increasing precariousness and complexity in working classes’ composition. The present situation might lead to the constitution of a new service working class, at least if this new class is capable of overcoming selfidentification and self-consciousness problems, which are produced by the segmentation of the labour market and the fragmentation of societies., Las transformaciones acaecidas en el empleo en las últimas décadas nos invitan a considerar la existencia de una nueva clase obrera.

This paper investigates the way extra-filmic class relations inform and modulate documentaries, as well as discusses the notion of “outro de classe” in situations where bosses film their domestic servants. We analyze films of the contemporary Brazilian context such as Santiago (João Moreira Salles, 2007), Babás (Consuelo Lins, 2010) e Doméstica (Gabriel Mascaro, 2012). The social stratification of food consumption is the main empirical object of this paper. It aims to investigate the possible homology between the practices in the field of food consumption, on the one hand, and the relative positions in social space occupied by social agents, on the other hand. Therefore, such an investigation may be included in a set of studies influenced by Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of class, which the matizes the symbolic dimensional of class relations. Secondarily, this paper attempts to further our understanding of the mechanisms of social reproduction, especially regarding the role of lifestyles in the production and reproduction of inequalities and symbolic hierarchies.

This paper analyzes the effects of social class on the educational performance of young Brazilians students. Our theoretical approach in this study is based on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of social class. We opted for a quantitative methodology using the database of the Basic Education Evaluation System (Saeb) tests carried out in 2013. We used descriptive statistics, correspondence analysis and multiple linear regression. Empirical results showed the persistence of the effects of social class on academic performance, although these results coexist with the impacts of variables related to schooling, individual life story and pedagogical aspects.

The objective os this paper is to analyze the resignification of subaltern experience as lived by women of popular classes that relate to each other through digital media. We observe how the use of these media points out toward new forms of subjectivation and that intersec, especially, with differences of class and gender. Therefore we conducted multilocated and mediated ethnographic research in online platforms like Facebook, Bolsa de Mulher, Whatsapp groups as in offline environments that mold the everyday lives of our subjects, mainly Baixada Fluminense and the poor West region of Rio de Janeiro

The paper discusses the social motivation of the variable syntactic haplology (dentro de casa:: den'de casa ‘indoors’, voltando de carro::voltan’de carro ‘coming back by car’) in the Porto Alegre variety of Brazilian Portuguese. An exploratory quantitative analysis of speech data according to Labov (1972, 1994, 2001, 2010) shows that the process, which targets syllables with /t/ or /d/ in onset position at the end and the beginning of words in sequence in phrasal domains, (a) exhibits a total proportion of rule application of 27.2% in the speech of young people; (b) correlates with social variables Mobility and Income and the linguistic variable Structure of the second syllable. The results suggest that the effects of mobility on the variable haplology in Porto Alegre Portuguese are due to the young, cosmopolitan, urban persona that the process, as a resource of identification and distinction (according to ECKERT 2000, 2018), helps to construct.

In spite of the important reduction in caries levels, it is fundamental to continue monitoring this disease to enable follow up its trends, as well as allow measurements to assess its impact. Thus, this study had the following objectives: (1) Assess if the simplified dental caries indices proposed by GUIMARÃES (1971) could be indicated (2) Assess if the simplified dental caries indices proposed by VIEGAS (1969) are applicable, considering current caries prevalence; (3) analyze some oral health variables, like the percentage of children free of caries, DMFT Index and Significant Garies Index in different dental caries prevalence groups at 12 years of age; (4) investigate the risk indicators associated with the experience of dental caries in 12-year-old schoolchildren in a low prevalence municipality. These four objectives were developed in papers (Ghapters). For Ghapters 1, 2 and 3 the epidemiological sample was 2,378, and according to the DMFT obtained in each location, three prevalence groups were obtained: low, modera te and high, calculating the simplified indices, percentage of caries-free children, DMFT and SiG Index in each prevalence. For objective 4, in addition to the epidemiological exams, questionnaires were applied, to obtain the final sample of 266 12-year-old schoolchildren. For statistical analysis of the results, non-parametric and multivariate logistic regressions were used. The simplified index of the two hemi-arches (GUIMARÃES, 1971) may be used in municipalities where there is low, moderate and high caries prevalence, in order to plan services, as the proportion of the simplified index components was similar to that of DMFT. The index, which is based on the caries experience of the first lower molar, cued also be applied in the three caries prevalence groups studied, showing that the first molar (VIEGAS, 1969) continues to be an important indicator of the caries leveI in populations. Considering studied the oral health variables, it was found that the percentage of caries-free children decreased as the prevalence of caries increased. A group of children with high caries experience was observed, and the SiC was demonstrated as being adequate for showing up this group (p

Based on Marxist understanding regarding capitalism and supposing that one’s position on the social structure influences their possibilities of space usage and appropriation, I have developed a doctorate thesis in which, among other aspects, I have proposed some criteria to operationalize the social class category. This text is a result of this paper’s reevaluation, therefore intend to reflect on such criteria, based on a Geography research experience. To achieve that, I present a synthesis of the theoretical course which led to the adopted procedures, expose such procedures, and analyze adopting criteria related to one’s occupation as well as their trajectory in order to understand their class. This discussion is made mainly based on the field findings and the linking between theory and practice. I also mark the possibility of taking their world interpretations and their practices in consideration as an element that indicates their position on the social structure.

This paper analyzes Ellen Wood's work to understand how the "retreat" from the centrality of the class as a unifying category of human experience affects the possibility of facing the substantial emptying of democracy. The dynamic is to clarify the proposal of Substantive Democracy. After, to discuss the importance of redefining the concept of social class to think about the world today. Lastly, to assess practical obstacles that constitute theoretical obstacles to overcoming the "recession of Marxism". The argument is anchored in the defense of political theory as an "exercise of persuasion" based on real problems that the author seeks to answer and overcome. As a result, we highlight the search for a political theory of Wood's work and, for this, it is understood that: (1) Substantive Democracy is not possible in capitalism, marked by the separation of political and economic; (2) it is necessary to understand the class struggle, first, locally and nationally to confront dependency and enable autonomous national development strategies., Este artículo analiza el trabajo de Ellen Wood para comprender cómo la "retirada" de la centralidad de la clase como una categoría unificadora de la experiencia humana afecta la posibilidad de enfrentar el vaciamiento sustancial de la democracia.

This paper analyzes the effects of social class on the educational performance of young Brazilians students. This paper analyses the heterogeneity in women's perception of domestic and care work. Differences in women's perceptions of domestic and care work are analysed, since aspects such as social class can influence the perception of satisfaction with the tasks and the predisposition to externalise them. Secondly, family responsibilities are also considered a relevant factor in the perception of tasks, so that for women with family responsibilities daily life may revolve around care work. In order to carry out the analysis, the social class and the fact of having family responsibilities, or not, are taken into account as decisive elements in the perception when selecting the profiles. It has been decided to use a qualitative methodology based on carrying out and analysing a series of interviews. We have been able to observe not only that social class and family responsibilities make a difference in how women perceive domestic and care work, but also that the tasks of care work and domestic work are perceived differently from each other.

The following paper intends to observe the high social circles and the construction of their experience in the world, freed from the urgency of the economic need. As there is a distance over material urgency, their daily life is constructed in a particular way and differently from the working class, this is how an exclusive disposition is created that leading them to constituted a stylization of privileged life. Through the use of qualitative techniques, we will examine the implication of the social space in the habitus of the subjects for the determination and delimitation of the class and we will expose possible elements of a priviledged consciousness. The investigation will bring us closer to a description of the priviledged reality and the social distance with respect to the others.

The aim of this research was to comprehend the processes of espacialization and territorialization of the Movimento Social Terra Livre [Free Land Social Movement] between 2008 and 2017 in Goiás. Thus, it was necessary to analyze the maturation and creation of the movement, and to set up a dialogue between its concepts, social classes and territory. Another key element to comprehend the Movimento Social Terra Livre was the criticism it makes to the process of implementation of the public policies of land reform and the program Minha Casa Minha Vida [My House, My Life]. Through a literature review of the primary sources, that is, the documents of social movements, including Terra Livre, this work followed its espacialization and territorialization in Goiás. It also collected data from secondary sources such as newspapers, papers, monographs, dissertations, thesis, and the revisited archives of the Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) [Pastoral Land Comission] and other government agencies as the Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária (INCRA) [National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform], and the extincts Ministério do Desenvolvimento Agrário (MDA) [Ministry of Agrarian Development] and Ministério das Cidades (MC) [Ministry of Cities]. After examining the sources, it was possible to chart the quantitative data and represent them in tables and maps. The qualitative data were disposed through the text. The research concluded that Terra Livre is a social movement with a strong class vision that seeks to build territories. Between 2008 and 2012, Terra Livre was the movement that realized most occupations in Goiás, so that its specialization and territorialization reached 20 counties, especially in the southwest part of the estate. The objective of this paper is to question the relation between high abilities/giftedness and the intersection among gender, race and social class. The method was documental through content analysis of the work Quarto de Despejo (1960) written by Carolina Maria de Jesus. Results were the content of extreme poverty, negligence of fundamental rights, violence committed by men, women and children, alcoholism, the presence of reading and writing and Carolina’s perceptions regarding her life and social milieu. We consider that social markers as gender, race and social class have a main role in marginalization and consequent lackof development of abilities and potentials. All society takes advantage giving opportunities to the development of gifted people’s potential because benefits of inclusion are for everybody. Besides, it is necessary to consider Brazilian social and historical reality in identification, evaluation and educational service of giftedness.

Abstract: The lack of academic and social integration has been considered important to explain the institutional reasons for student dropout. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the integration of students of the Institute of Physics of UnB and their social background. An instrument based on the Tinto model was elaborated and applied to a representative sample of the student body (n = 160). Evidence indicates that: (1) among the freshmen, the occurrence of motivation for teaching is independent of the motivation for research; (2) we should suspect the belief that enjoying social life competes with academic success, since intellectually confident students are also those who report more regular and enjoyable social life with peers; (3) outskirt students tend to be less socially and academically integrated. Taken together, the results recommend a sensitive look at the unfolding of social differences on human relations in the Physics Institutes.
