It is important to investigate the hydrological consequences of current climate change. Hydrological responses to climate warming and wetter conditions include changes in discharge (frequency, amplitude, and volume). This paper describes current climate change and its impact on hydrological flow within the Horyn River basin. Daily air temperature and precipitation data obtained from the 17 meteorological stations located in and nearby the Horyn River basin, in combination with hydrological data (such as daily water discharges obtained from 9 water gauges), were used for the analysis of climate variability and its hydrological consequences. Analyses of meteorological variables and water discharges are crucial for the assessment of long-term changes in the river regime. Thiessen polygons were used to determine the area of influence of assigned specific meteorological stations, which affect the river's catchments within the Horyn River basin. As a result of the trend analysis, it was observed that discharge within the Horyn River basin decreased over time. These results were congruent with the trends of precipitation data and air temperature data of the stations determined by the Thiessen polygons and basin boundaries. To understand current changes in the daily flow in the basin, changes in air temperature and precipitation for the period 1991-2020 were compared with the period of the climatic norm (1961-1990). A similar analysis was done for daily water discharges. Increasing air temperature and decreasing precipitation in the current period led to a significant decrease in discharges in the Horyn River basin, especially during the spring flood period. Translating changes in land surface conditions and climate into changes in precipitation, runoff and flood frequencies over a range of catchment scales is a pressing challenge for hydrologic design and flood risk management today. In this paper, we describe a novel approach for modeling areal runoff frequency from heavy-to-extreme precipitation in large urban areas using a simple but general stochastic model for runoff at point scale and bi- and univariate parametric probability distributions for positive point precipitation and areal runoff, respectively. We apply the approach to the Dallas–Fort Worth area using a 22-year historical multisensor precipitation dataset from the National Weather Service to characterize how the different factors that specify the second-order statistics of precipitation, imperviousness and soil water holding capacity at point scale may shape areal runoff frequency, and to assess how changes in precipitation climatology and land surface conditions may change areal runoff frequency as a function of catchment scale and magnitude of precipitation. The results indicate that areal runoff frequency is impacted most significantly by changes in climatological mean and coefficient of variation of positive point precipitation, water holding capacity of soil, imperviousness, and spatial correlation scale of positive point precipitation given the probability of occurrence of heavy-to-extreme precipitation, and that a very small number of low-order statistics of point precipitation may describe areal runoff frequency given the conditional probability distribution models for point precipitation and areal runoff. The approach presented hence offers a parsimonious physically-based alternative to purely numerical approaches based on integrated modeling, or empirical approaches based solely on statistical modeling toward predictive modeling of areal precipitation and runoff frequencies under changing hydroclimatological conditions. This study analyzed changes in hydrology between two recent decades (1980s and 2010s) with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool ( SWAT) in three representative watersheds in South Dakota: Bad River, Skunk Creek, and Upper Big Sioux River watersheds. Two SWAT models were created over two discrete time periods (1981-1990 and 2005-2014) for each watershed. National Land Cover Datasets 1992 and 2011 were, respectively, ingested into 1981-1990 and 2005-2014 models, along with corresponding weather data, to enable comparison of annual and seasonal runoff, soil water content, evapotranspiration ( ET), water yield, and percolation between these two decades. Simulation results based on the calibrated models showed that surface runoff, soil water content, water yield, and percolation increased in all three watersheds. Elevated ET was also apparent, except in Skunk Creek watershed. Differences in annual water balance components appeared to follow changes in land use more closely than variation in precipitation amounts, although seasonal variation in precipitation was reflected in seasonal surface runoff. Subbasin-scale spatial analyses revealed noticeable increases in water balance components mostly in downstream parts of Bad River and Skunk Creek watersheds, and the western part of Upper Big Sioux River watershed. Results presented in this study provide some insight into recent changes in hydrological processes in South Dakota watersheds. Important hydrological changes are observed in Serbia, as well as in many parts of the world. Many national and international projects and studies address climate change and its impact on water resources. Some focus solely on the impact of climate change, while others also assess the impact of land use changes and/or changes in human use of water. Due to differences in climate change and human activities, the different climate and hydrological trends are obtained for the different regions in Serbia. This paper presents the past longterm temperature, precipitation and river discharge trends across Serbia. Second, more important aim of the research, is to assess and forecast average relationships between an increase in air temperature and changes in river discharges and precipitation. This relation could help us to find appropriate regional climate and hydrological models. Even within a single catchment, depending on the regional models used, the initial and other assumptions made, and the impacts assessed, the differences between the results can be small but often significant, too. Precipitation is one of the most important climate variables which can impact the urban water and urban flooding. Thus, knowledge of precipitation and precipitation extremes is important to manage urban water and to design urban drainage infrastructure to reduce the urban flooding. This paper presented trends in precipitation and precipitation extremes in Ho Chi Minh City for the 1980-2013 period based on the precipitation data obtained from nine rain gauges. Non-parametric test, i.e. Mann-Kendall test, was used for trend analysis, and the precipitation extremes indices were used to calculate the extreme events. The results indicated that the precipitation has increasing trend in the northwest part of the city and decreasing trend in the southeast part of the city in the 1980-2013 period. In addition, the precipitation and precipitation extremes had generally increasing trends. The changes in climatic variables in Ethiopia are not entirely understood. This paper investigated the recent trends of precipitation and temperature on two eco-regions of Ethiopia. This study used the observed historical meteorological data from 1980 to 2016 to analyze the trends. Trend detection was done by using the non-parametric Mann-Kendall (MK), Sen's slope estimator test, and Innovative Trend Analysis Method (ITAM). The results showed that a significant increasing trend was observed in the Gondar, Bahir Dar, Gewane, Dembi-Dolo, and Negele stations. However, a slightly decreasing trend was observed in the Sekoru, Degahabur, and Maichew stations regarding precipitation trends. As far as the trend of temperature was concerned, an increasing trend was detected in the Gondar, Bahir Dar, Gewane, Degahabur, Negele, Dembi-Dolo, and Maichew stations. However, the temperature trend in Sekoru station showed a sharp decreasing trend. The effects of precipitation and temperature changes on water resources are significant after 1998. The consistency in the precipitation and temperature trends over the two eco-regions confirms the robustness of the changes. Summary The climate elasticity of runoff is an important indicator that is used to quantify the relationship between changes in runoff and changes in climate variables. It is a function of both climate and catchment characteristics. Recently, Yang and Yang (2011) proposed an analytical derivation of climate elasticity (YY2011), in which a parameter n was used to represent the impact of the catchment characteristics. In China, both climate and catchment characteristics have large spatial variations. To understand the spatial variation of hydrologic response to climate change, this paper divided China into 210 catchments, further calculated the parameter n , and then estimated the climate elasticity and evaluated the contribution of climate change to runoff for each catchment. The results show that n ranges from 0.4 to 3.8 (with a mean of 1.3 and a standard deviation of 0.6), which has a logarithmic relationship with catchment slope; the precipitation elasticity ranges from 1.1 to 4.8 (with a mean of 1.9 and a standard deviation of 0.6), which shows a large regional variation, smaller values (1.1–2.0) mainly appearing in Southern China, the Songhua River basin and the Northwest, and larger values (2.1–4.8) mainly appearing in the Hai River basin, the Liao River basin and the Yellow River basin. In addition, climate contribution to runoff exhibits a large regional variation, the largest positive values (1.1–3.1%/a) occurring in the Northwest, the largest negative values (−1.0 to −0.5%/a) occurring in the Hai River basin and the middle reach of the Yellow River basin. In theory, the YY2011 method is a first-order approximation. The approximation underestimates the precipitation ( P ) contribution to runoff when P increases and overestimates that when P decreases, and the relative error has a median of ∼3% and a maximum of ∼20% when 10% precipitations change in those catchments of China. Results from the multiple‐realization, single‐model ensemble called "d4PDF" were used to generate hydroclimate indices for present and future climates over the Indochina region. The model performed reasonably well in capturing the reference precipitation characteristics of the present climate (1951–2010), in particular the seasonal pattern (e.g., JJA and SON) and intensity‐based indices such as SDII, R95p, Rx1D, and Rx3D. Under the +4 K future simulation conditions for 2051–2110, comprising six prescribed sea‐surface temperature scenarios, substantial and statistically significant increases in precipitation frequency (R10 and R20) and intensity (SDII, Rx1D, and Rx3D) were projected over the Indochinese Peninsula with a high degree of consistency. However, there were greater uncertainties in the changes significance of mean precipitation either during early dry‐season (DJF) or late monsoon (SON) indices demonstrated by results of the parametric U test in some river catchments, such as the Chao Phraya, Red River, central Mekong, lower Irrawaddy, and Salween Basins, where the projection consistencies in a positive change direction were less than 50%. Comparison of basin‐wide empirical probability distributions of precipitation indices pointed to a robust increase in the frequency of the occurrence of heavy precipitation in intensity indices (e.g., Rx1D, Rx3D, and SDII). The relationship between d4PDF precipitation and total runoff generation outputs from the land surface component was investigated. The results show a high degree of temporal correspondence across the region under the present climate in several seasonal and intensity indices, except during the dry period (DJF and MAM). Finally, we found that εP(P, R) of the annual and seasonal climatological indices of the future climate were always positive and larger than unity, with a median εP(P, R) of 1.28–2.04. The climate of the circumpolar Boreal forest is changing rapidly, resulting in a growing frequency of wildfires and changing precipitation patterns. These climate-related stressors may influence the cycling of nutrients within, and overall ecosystem condition of, Boreal watersheds. However, long-term perspectives of concurrent climate-related impacts on the cycling of nutrients in watersheds are rare. We present multi-decadal terrestrial and lake mass budgets of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon within a headwater Boreal Shield watershed that was recovering from an extensive wildfire while experiencing measureable increases in annual precipitation. We used these budgets to quantify associations between nutrient retention in each ecosystem and changes in metrics defining landscape recovery after wildfire or precipitation. The terrestrial watershed retained over half of all nitrogen and phosphorus delivered to it by the atmosphere. Strong nutrient retention occurred despite ongoing landscape recovery from wildfire, measurable increases in precipitation, a forest tent caterpillar defoliation and rising atmospheric deposition. A downstream headwater lake was also a strong and consistent sink of nitrogen and phosphorus, highlighting a whole-watershed resistance to environmental disturbances. However, carbon was strongly lost downstream from the terrestrial ecosystem in close and positive association with precipitation, resulting in a darkening of the headwater lake over time with implications for the functioning of its ecosystem. Long-term mass budget monitoring of a Boreal catchment has provided insight into the resistances and dynamic changes within a northern watershed exposed to concurrent wildfire and increasing precipitation conditions. Projections of climate change are essential to guide sustainable development plans in the tropical Andean countries such as Peru. This study assessed the projections of precipitation and potential evaporation, rain erosive potential, and precipitation concentration in the Mantaro River Basin, in the Peruvian Andes, which is important for agriculture and energy production in Peru. We assumed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B greenhouse gas emission scenario and simulated the global climate change by the HadCM3 global climate model. Due to the steepness of the mountain slopes and the narrowness of the river valley, this study uses the downscaling of the global model simulations by the regional Eta model down to 20-km resolution. The downscaling projections show decrease in the monthly precipitation with respect to the baseline period, especially during the rainy season, between February and April, until the end of the 21st century. Meanwhile, a progressive increase in the monthly evaporation from the baseline period is projected. The Modified Fournier Index (MFI) shows a statistically significant downward trend in the Mantaro River Basin, which suggests a possible reduction in the rain erosive potential. The Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) shows a statistically significant increasing trend, which indicates increasingly more irregular temporal distribution of precipitation towards the end of the century. The results of this study allow us to conclude that there should be a gradual increase in water deficit and precipitation concentration. In order to assess the nature of c1imate change, it is important to analyze the indicators of climate variability in different scales: spatial and temporal. The analysis at different scales can lead to understanding of the nature ofvariations. Climate change studies are essential for comprehending the nature of global processes, to refine global climate patterns and also develop tbrther research for natural processes (Meinke, Stone, 2005; Hulme et aI., 1999). Process es in nature are united, continuous and in constant interaction. Variance of interaction types are immeasurable, types can be connected with different scales and science fields, for example, biological, ecological, physical etc. If interaction is taking place between the land and atmosphere, it is defined as hydrological interaction. As water is significantly important for many purposes on the EaIth, it is relevant to analyze precipitation and water mnoff on a local scale. In the tenitory of Latvia, the amount of precipitation exceeds the level of evapotranspiration. Long-term monitoring data show that precipitation leads to average mnoff of 250 mm per year (Ziverts, 2004). The monitoring data collected at three research sites located in Latvia was used tor this research including Berze (Lielupe river basin, meteorological station in Dobeie), Mellupite (Venta river basin, meteorological station in Saldus monitoring) and Vienziemite (Gauja river basin, meteorological station in Zoseni). This study focuses on the impacts of climate change on rainfall erosivity in the Huai Luang watershed, Thailand. The multivariate climate models (IPCC AR5) consisting of CCSM4, CSIRO-MK3.6.0 and MRI-CGCM3 under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios are analyzed. The Quantile mapping method is used as a downscaling technique to generate future precipitation scenarios which enable the estimation of future rainfall erosivity under possible changes in climatic conditions. The relationship between monthly precipitation and rainfall erosivity is used to estimate monthly rainfall erosivity under future climate scenarios. The assessment compared values of rainfall erosivity during 1982-2005 with future timescales (i.e., the 2030s, 2050s, 2070s and 2090s). The results indicate that the average of each General Circulation Model (GCM) combination shows a rise in the average annual rainfall erosivity for all four future time scales, as compared to the baseline of 8302 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1, by 12% in 2030s, 24% in 2050s, 43% in 2070s and 41% in 2090s. The magnitude of change varies, depending on the GCMs (CCSM4, CSIRO-MK3.6.0, and MRI-CGCM3) and RCPs with the largest change being 82.6% (15,159 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1) occurring under the MRI-CGCM3 RCP8.5 scenario in 2090s. A decrease in rainfall erosivity has been found, in comparison to the baseline by 2.3% (8114 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1) for the CCSM4 RCP4.5 scenario in 2030s and 2.6% (8088 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1) for the 2050s period. However, this could be considered uncertain for future rainfall erosivity estimation due to different GCMs. The results of this study are expected to help development planners and decision makers while planning and implementing suitable soil erosion and deposition control plans to adapt climate change in the Huai Luang watershed. Hydrology cycle of river basins and available water resources in arid and semi-arid regions are highly affected by climate changes. In recent years, the increment of temperature due to excessive increased emission of greenhouse gases has led to an abnormality in the climate system of the earth. The main objective of this study is to survey the future climate changes in one of the biggest mountainous watersheds in northeast of Iran (i.e., Kashafrood). In this research, by considering the precipitation and temperature as two important climatic parameters in watersheds, 14 models evolved in the general circulation models (GCMs) of the newest generation in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) were used to forecast the future climate changes in the study area. For the historical period of 1992-2005, four evaluation criteria including Nash-Sutcliffe (NS), percent of bias (PBIAS), coefficient of determination ( R ) and the ratio of the root-mean-square-error to the standard deviation of measured data (RSR) were used to compare the simulated observed data for assessing goodness-of-fit of the models. In the primary results, four climate models namely GFDL-ESM2G, IPSL-CM5A-MR, MIROC-ESM, and NorESM1-M were selected among the abovementioned 14 models due to their more prediction accuracies to the investigated evaluation criteria. Thereafter, climate changes of the future periods (near-century, 2006-2037; mid-century, 2037-2070; and late-century, 2070-2100) were investigated and compared by four representative concentration pathways (RCPs) of new emission scenarios of RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5. In order to assess the trend of annual and seasonal changes of climatic components, Mann-Kendall non-parametric test (MK) was also employed. The results of Mann-Kendall test revealed that the precipitation has significant variable trends of both positive and negative alterations. Furthermore, the mean, maximum, and minimum temperature values had significant positive trends at 90, 99, and 99.9 % confidence level. On the other hand, in all parts of the Kashafrood Watershed (KW), the average temperature of watershed will be increased up to 0.56-3.3 °C and the mean precipitation will be decreased up to 10.7 % by the end of the twenty-first century comparing to the historical baselines. Also, in seasonal scale, the maximum and minimum precipitations will occur in spring and summer, respectively, and the mean temperature is higher than the historical baseline in all seasons. The maximum and minimum values of the mean temperature will occur in summer and winter, respectively, and the amount of seasonal precipitation in these seasons will be reduced. A linear mixed-effects (LME) model is developed to discriminate the sources of variation in the changes of several precipitation characteristics over the Rhine basin as projected by an ensemble of 191 global climate model (GCM) simulations from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). The uncertainty in climate change projections originates from natural internal variability, imperfect climate models, and the unpredictability of future greenhouse gas forcing. The LME model allows for the quantification of the contribution of these sources of uncertainty as well as the interaction between greenhouse gas forcing and climate model. In addition, dependence between climate models can be accounted for by using a two-level LME model in which the GCMs are grouped according to their atmospheric circulation model. Statistical models of varied complexity are assessed by the Akaike information criterion. More than 60% of the variance of the changes in mean summer precipitation and various quantiles of 5-day summer precipitation at the end of the twenty-first century can be explained by the climate model. Differences between climate models are also the main source of uncertainty for the changes in three drought characteristics in the summer half-year. In winter, the differences between GCMs are smaller, and natural variability explains a large proportion of the variance of the changes. Natural variability is also the main source of uncertainty for the changes in two indices of extreme precipitation. Many hydrological hazards are closely connected to local precipitation (extremes), especially in small and urban catchments. The use of regional climate model (RCM) data for small-scale hydrological climate change impact assessment has long been nearly unfeasible because of the low spatial resolution. The RCM resolution is, however, rapidly increasing, approaching the size of small catchments and thus potentially increasing the applicability of RCM data for this purpose. The objective of this study is to explore to what degree subhourly temporal precipitation statistics in an RCM converge to observed point statistics when gradually increasing the resolution from 50 to 6 km. This study uses precipitation simulated by RCA3 at seven locations in southern Sweden during 1995-2008. A positive impact of higher resolution was most clearly manifested in 10-yr intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves. At 50 km the intensities are underestimated by 50%-90%, but at 6 km they are nearly unbiased, when averaged over all locations and durations. Thus, at 6 km, RCA3 apparently generates low-frequency subdaily extremes that resemble the values found in point observations. Also, the reproduction of short-term variability and less extreme maxima were overall improved with increasing resolution. For monthly totals, a slightly increased overestimation with increasing resolution was found. The bias in terms of wet fraction and wet spell characteristics was overall not strongly dependent on resolution. These metrics are, however, influenced by the cutoff threshold used to separate between wet and dry time steps as well as the wet spell definition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measurements on groundwater level and subsurface drain discharge have been carried in a small field-scale catchment from November 2012 to February 2013 in south-western Norway. The main objective of the measurements has been to study the interaction between the subsurface drainage discharge and groundwater level. Different methods were used to analyse the measurements. One method was to study the variation in groundwater level and drain discharge. The measurements showed there were large day to day variations. However, in addition, there were large diurnal variations in both the groundwater level and drain discharge. Also the recession of groundwater level was studied using a two-exponential decay function. During several months the precipitation largely exceeded the long-term precipitation. The measurements showed that drainage system had the capacity to react fast to precipitation-induced rise in groundwater level, resulting in a fast drawdown. The measurements at the small scale field catchment showed that the drainage system is designed and capable to react to high precipitation amounts like those predicted by climate change scenario studies. Much attention has recently been focused on the effects of climate variability and human activities on the runoff. In this study, we analyzed 56-yr (1957-2012) runoff change and patterns in the Jinghe River Basin (JRB) in the arid region of northwest China. The nonparametric Mann-Kendall test and the precipitation-runoff double cumulative curve (PRDCC) were used to identify change trend and abrupt change points in the annual runoff. It was found that the runoff in the JRB has periodically fluctuated in the past 56 yr. Abrupt change point in annual runoff was identified in the JRB, which occurred in the years around 1964 and 1996 dividing the long-term hydrologic series into a natural period (1957-1964) and a climate and man-induced period (1965-1996 and 1997-2012). In the 1965-1996 period, human activities were the main factor that decreased runoff with contribution of 88.9%, while climate variability only accounted for 11.1%. However, the impact of climate variability has been increased from 11.1% to 47.5% during 1997-2012, showing that runoff in JRB is more sensitive to climate variability during global warming. This study distinguishes the effect of climate variability from human activities on runoff, which can do duty for a reference for regional water resources assessment and management.
