The objective of this study was to quantify the farm gate nitrogen (N) offset potential of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) white clover (Trifolium repens L.; WC) swards by comparing the herbage and milk production from dairy farmlets that were simulations of full farming systems. A study was established where 120 cows were randomly assigned to 4 farmlets of 10.9 ha (stocking rate: 2.75 cow/ha), composed of 20 paddocks each. Cows were fed 526 kg of DM of concentrate on average each year. The 4 grazing treatments were PRG-only at 150 or 250 kg of N/ha and PRG-WC at 150 or 250 kg of N/ha. Cows remained in their treatment group for an entire grazing season and were re-randomized as they calved across treatments each year. As cows calved in the spring as standard practice in Ireland, they were rotationally grazed from early February both day and night (weather permitting) to mid-November, to a target postgrazing sward height of 4.0 cm. Mean sward WC content was 18.1% and 15.4% for the 150 and 250 kg of N/ha PRG-WC treatments, respectively over the 3-yr period. When WC was included, lowering the N rate did not reduce pregrazing yield, pregrazing height, or herbage removed, but those factors decreased significantly when WC was absent. Total annual herbage DM production was 13,771, 15,242, 14,721, and 15,667 kg of DM/ha for PRG-only swards receiving 150 or 250 kg of N/ha and PRG-WC swards receiving 150 or 250 kg of N/ha, respectively. In addition, when WC was present, compressed postgrazing sward heights were lower (4.10 vs. 4.21 cm) and herbage allowance (approximately 17 kg/cow feed allocation per cow per day) higher than the high-N control (+ 0.7 kg of DM/cow per day). There was a significant increase in milk production, both per cow and per hectare, when WC was included in PRG swards. Over the 3-yr study, cows grazing PRG-WC had greater milk (+304 kg) and milk solids (+31 kg of fat + protein) yields than cows grazing PRG-only swards. This significant increase in milk production suggests that the inclusion of WC in grazing systems can be effectively used to increase milk production per cow and per hectare and help offset nitrogen use. This result shows the potential to increase farm gate N use efficiency and reduce the N surplus compared with PRG-dominant sward grazing systems receiving 250 kg of N/ha, without negatively affecting milk solids yield or herbage production, thus increasing farm profit by €478/ha. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) is a forage that produces secondary metabolites with one, aucubin, known to inhibit soil nitrification. This study aimed to quantify the exudation of aucubin and catalpol by plantain root systems in a hydroponic experiment; evaluate the effect of aucubin on nitrogen (N) leaching and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from urine applied to plantain and ryegrass-white clover swards; and compare N losses from a ryegrass-white clover sward after urine from cows fed plantain and cows fed ryegrass-white clover was applied. Nitrate ( NO 3 − ) leaching and N2O losses were measured in a lysimeter experiment. Catalpol, but not aucubin, was exudated by plantain roots. N2O emissions were decreased by plantain swards and by ryegrass-white clover swards to which aucubin was also applied. Aucubin had no effect on NO 3 − leaching. Urine from cows grazing plantain had no effect on N2O emissions, and N leaching when compared to the urine from cows grazing ryegrass-white clover with the same N content. We conclude the plantain sward and the aucubin applied to the ryegrass-white clover sward decreased N2O emissions via mechanisms in the soil separate from the decreased emissions resulting from the lower N concentration of urine derived from cows grazing plantain. Purpose : Nitrogen (N) transfer from white clover (Trifolium repens cv.) to ryegrass (Lolium perenne cv.) has the potential to meet ryegrass N requirements. This study aimed to quantify N transfer in a mixed pasture and investigate the influence of the microbial community and land management on N transfer. Methods: Split root 15N-labelling of clover quantified N transfer to ryegrass via exudation, microbial assimilation, decomposition, defoliation and soil biota. Incorporation into the microbial protein pool was determined using compound-specific 15N-stable isotope probing approaches. Results: N transfer to ryegrass and soil microbial protein in the model system was relatively small, with one-third arising from root exudation. N transfer to ryegrass increased with no microbial competition but soil microbes also increased N transfer via shoot decomposition. Addition of mycorrhizal fungi did not alter N transfer, due to the source-sink nature of this pathway, whilst weevil grazing on roots decreased microbial N transfer. N transfer was bidirectional, and comparable on a short-term scale. Conclusions: N transfer was low in a model young pasture established from soil from a permanent grassland with long-term N fertilisation. Root exudation and decomposition were major N transfer pathways. N transfer was influenced by soil biota (weevils, mycorrhizae) and land management (e.g. grazing). Incorporating plantain with perennial ryegrass and white clover (RGWC) can improve the quality and quantity of grazing pastures; however, the sowing rate could affect the persistence of plantain, pasture yield, and nutritive value in different seasons. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing sowing rates of plantain when established with RGWC on the dry matter (DM) yield, botanical composition, nutritive value, and bioactive compounds of the pasture over the first two years after sowing; and to determine the relationship between plantain content and nutritive characteristics in different seasons. The pasture treatments were RGWC, RGWC + low plantain rate (PLL), RGWC + medium plantain rate (PLM), and RGWC + high plantain rate (PLH). The results showed that annual DM yield was similar between treatments. The average plantain content (including leaves and reproductive stem) was 32, 44, and 48% in PLL, PLM, and PLH, respectively. The plantain composition increased in the first 15 months, then declined rapidly to about 20–30% at day 705 after sowing. Compared with RGWC, the plantain-RGWC pastures (PLL, PLM, PLH) had a higher content of organic matter digestibility (OMD), ash, starch, non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), P, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, Zn, B, Co, aucubin, acteoside, and catalpol, while they contained a lower composition of DM%, acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), crude fat (CF), Fe, and Mn. These differences were linearly associated with the content of plantain leaves in the pasture and were higher in summer and autumn than in spring. In conclusion, incorporating plantain into the RGWC pasture can improve herbage nutritive quality, thus potentially increasing farm productivity and environmental benefits. Australia has tropical, summer dominant rainfall in the north transitioning to temperate, winter dominant rainfall in the south. Temperate pasture species with a cool season growth pattern are commonly grown in the south, but tropical pasture species that are highly productive and responsive to summer rainfall, may also have a role in southern pasture systems with climate change. Determine the value of replacing temperate pastures with tropical pastures; and assess the emergence success of tropical grasses in response to historic climate change in eastern Australia. The AusFarm model was used to test replacing lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) (L); annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum L.)/subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) (RC); or lucerne/annual ryegrass/subterranean clover (LRC) with tropical pasture at varying rates of inclusion at five locations across the subtropical-temperate transition zone. The emergence success of tropical grasses with a bare fallow, short fallow and increased ground cover management was also tested. The modelling covered two periods, the Far Climate (1960–1990) and the Near Climate (1990–2020). Tropical pastures had higher plant growth in late summer-early autumn when temperate pastures are less active. Pasture growth decreased from the Far to the Near Climate period across all sites. The pastures with L lost the most production over this period, with minimal change in other pasture types. Supplementary feeding was reduced at all sites with the inclusion of tropical pastures. The cost of supplementary feeding from the Far to the Near Climate increased by $20/ha with increased variability between years, which in-turn decreased gross margin by an average of $26/ha. Tropical pastures improved profitability on average by $24/ha (11%), but with different responses between environments. At the low rainfall sites (Condobolin and Leeton) there was a substantial benefit when tropical grass-clover (TC) pasture replaced L, but at the higher rainfall sites (Cowra and Wagga Wagga) the benefit was replacing RC with TC. There was a gradient of successful emergence from very high (>90%) in the north, to reduced opportunities in the south (<45%), and marginal influence of sowing management. Adding tropical pastures to grazing systems with temperate pastures increased summer-autumn growth, the animal requirements met by pasture, and gross margins. Profitability of livestock systems decreased with climate change, but this can be overcome by optimising pasture composition. Early adopter-farmers form a living lab of farms that have a great deal of hidden knowledge about the cultivation of cover crops (CCs). Understanding of how early adopters use and value CCs provides valuable knowhow to be shared with other farmers. This study gathered information about the most common under-sown CCs in Finland. A structured survey was used to collect farmers' experiences considering CCs' regional suitability, growth, competition, and impacts on soil and cash crop yields. The respondents were both conventional and organic farmers who cultivated CCs in 2020. One thousand one hundred and thirty farmers answered the survey. Four hundred and ten times they shared knowhow about the use of under-sown CCs. They were mostly familiar with clovers, ryegrasses, and timothy as CCs. They answered 27 specific statements on CC (a Likert scale, five answer choices). Farmers' experiences were well in line with the understanding gained from field experiments. Farmers had experienced positive impacts of CCs on soil health. Organic farmers were slightly more positive than conventional farmers. This is attributable to a longer period of having CCs in organic farms, and general differences in means to control weeds and manage crop nutrition. Gained experience with common species used in grassland mixtures had strengthened farmers' trust in their use of CCs. Farmers having high cereal areas are an important target group for sharing the early adopters' experiences, as cereal farmers were more challenged to use even common CCs. The use of ground cover vegetation is becoming a prominent way of promoting biodiversity and associated ecosystem services in Chinese orchards. Despite the large number of studies that have addressed the effects of ground cover vegetation on promoting natural enemy populations and related pest control, it is still unclear whether enhanced natural pest control can increase yield and reduce the use of pesticide. We performed an experiment comparing three cover vegetation practices (ryegrass, clover and hairy vetch) versus a bare ground control in commercial pear orchards in the Yangtze River Delta of East China (YRDEC), China. Natural enemy density (predator and parasitoid abundance), invertebrate herbivore performance (piercing‐sucking herbivore abundance and branch‐boring and fruit‐boring percentage), pesticide input, and pear fruit yield were recorded. The results indicated that cover vegetation decreased herbivore abundance and boring percentage by 50% and 64%, respectively, thus decreasing pesticide use by 26%. We also found that cover vegetation increased the abundance of natural enemies by 621%, and increased pear fruit yield by 7%. Piecewise structural equation modelling confirmed that increased natural enemy densities, decreased herbivore performance by 102%, pesticide use by 51% and increased fruit yield by 10%. This study suggests that the use of ground cover vegetations, especially with clover and hairy vetch, is an effective way of promoting biocontrol services and associated ecosystem services in pear orchards. Forage crops serve as the main source of material for production of silage, which is the basis of most winter-feeding systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variation of diverse perennial grasses and the quality of small grain crop silage and to compare the nutritive value of selected pure and mixed silage groups. Silage samples were collected from 433 farms. They included perennial grass mix, cereal, alfalfa-perennial grass mix, clover, perennial ryegrass, perennial grass-clover mix, oat-common vetch mix, clover-alfalfa mix, legume mix, perennial grass-rye mix, and perennial grass-oat-common vetch mix silage, 1,626 samples in total. Analyses were carried out to determine the data on the content of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), also crude fat (CF), crude ash (CA), and acidity (pH). According to the experimental results, perennial ryegrass silage had the highest CP (166 g kg-1 DM), NDF (550 g kg-1 DM) and CF (39.1 g kg-1 DM) contents and the lowest DM content (321 g kg-1) compared to pure and mixed silage compositions. Among the silage, perennial grass-rye mix silage was shown to have the lowest pH (4.2). Both silage mixtures with oats and common vetch were characterised with higher pH: the pH of the oat-common vetch mix was 5, and the pH of perennial grass-oat-common vetch mix was 4.9. The oat-common vetch mix was high in NDF with 543 g kg-1 DM. Mixtures with clover silage were high in CP and NDF content. This study was carried out with the aim of determining the effect of forage plants belonging to different families on herbage quality and yield with different mixing ratios (Berseem clover:Italian ryegrass; 100:0%, 80:20%, 60:40%, 40:60%, 20:80% and 0:100%). In the study, plant height, green herbage and dry herbage yields, clover ratios in green herbage and dry herbage, crude protein ratio and yield, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestible dry matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI) rates and relative feed value (RFV) were investigated in Derya variety of berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) belonging to Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute and Elif variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) obtained from Aegean Agricultural Research Institute. The experiment was carried out with 4 replications according to the randomized blocks trial design in the summer term of 2020 in Bahçekapi village of Elazig city center. According to the study findings; the average green herbage yield of mixtures was found to be 3784.9 kg da-1, dry herbage yield was 1210.8 kg da-1, and crude protein yield was 146.6 kg da-1. Crude protein, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestible dry matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI) ratios and relative feed value (RFV) of the mixtures were determined as 12.04%, 35.7%, 50.9%, 61.0%, 2.36%, and 112.15, respectively. As a result of this study; it was determined that the most suitable mixture ratios in terms of dry herbage, green herbage and crude protein yields and crude protein ratio were 80% Berseem clover + 20% Italian ryegrass and 60% Berseem clover + 40% Italian ryegrass mixtures in Elazig ecological conditions. It was observed that the dry herbage, green herbage and crude protein yields and crude protein ratios were higher in the plots where the Berseem clover was more concentrated in the mixtures. Legume-based forage plant mixtures are known to increase biomass production over the mixture species grown as pure stands (overyielding), which has partly been attributed to enhanced nitrogen availability by legumes. However, the relative importance of underlying processes of these positive diversity effects and their drivers are not fully understood. Here we assessed if outcome and causes of diversity effects depend on the legume-species genetic identity. Over five years, we cultivated different white clover (Trifolium repens) populations, a grass and forb species in pure stands and clover-based mixtures and recorded biomass yield. Complementarity and selection effects of mixtures and relative yields of mixture species were calculated based on both unfertilized and nitrogen-fertilized non-leguminous pure stands. Results showed that the clover population altered the overall strength of diversity effects as well as the direction and magnitude of their temporal trends, at least for the grass component of mixtures. Differences in diversity effects between clover populations diminished when fertilized instead of unfertilized non-leguminous pure stands were considered. Hence, a part of these differences likely results from dissimilar effects of clover populations on nitrogen availability. Low dietary energy and decreased intake of herbage have been attributed to the reduced performance of grazing dairy cattle. We hypothesized that grasses with inherently greater energy would interact in a complementary way with condensed tannins (CT) in birdsfoot trefoil to increase herbage intake by grazing dairy heifers. Eight pasture treatments comprising high-sugar perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), meadow bromegrass (Bromus riparius Rehmann), and tall fescue [ Schendonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort] were established in Lewiston, Utah as monocultures and binary mixtures with birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.; BFT). Pasture treatments were rotationally stocked by Jersey heifers for 105 d in 2017 and 2018, and herbage samples were collected pre- and postgrazing for each 7-d grazing period and analyzed for herbage mass, nutritive value, and apparent herbage intake. We observed differences among pasture treatments in herbage quantity and nutritive value, as well as differences in herbage intake by grazing Jersey heifers. On average, grass-BFT mixtures had greater herbage intake than grass monocultures, and every grass-BFT treatment individually had greater herbage intake than their respective grass monocultures. Using multivariate analyses, we determined that approximately 50% of the variation in herbage intake was due to nutritive and physical herbage characteristics, with the most explanatory being characteristics related to fiber and energy, followed by those related to the percent of BFT in the herbage. Grass monocultures exhibited a range of inherent dietary energy, but there was indication that an imbalance of energy to crude protein (e.g., protein deficient) reduced intake of grass monocultures. Moreover, there was some evidence of a complementary effect between increased dietary energy and CT; however, low CT levels made it impossible to determine the effect of CT on herbage intake per se. This study confirmed that chemical and physical characteristics inherent to different pasture species have a large effect on herbage intake by grazing cattle. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is cultivated in many countries for its high yield and good quality forage. Its cultivars have specific functional traits, such as phenology, growth habit and rate, which affect the competitiveness and productivity of mixtures. The cultivation of new cultivars of perennial ryegrass or mixtures of cultivars in swards is one of the complementary measures to improve the condition of swards. The study was aimed to determine the productivity potential of three newer, less investigated Lithuanian perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars 'Elena DS', 'Raminta', 'Verseka', and cultivar mixtures in single-species swards and in mixtures with legumes - white and red clover. The experiment was set up in the central part of Lithuania in the Nemoral climate zone. Mineral fertilisers were not used for the mixtures with legumes, singlespecies crops were fertilised with N150 kg ha-1 yr-1. Over the two experimental years, the average dry matter yield of perennial ryegrass was 8.00 t ha-1 for the 'Elena DS', 7.4 t ha-1 for 'Verseka', 6.9 t ha-1 for 'Raminta' and 7.4 t ha-1 for the cultivar mixture. In the 1st year of sward use, the productivity of the perennial ryegrass cultivars did not differ significantly. In the 2nd year, the productivity of 'Elena DS' was significantly higher compared with that of the other cultivars cultivated in single-species crops. The influence of functional traits of the cultivars was significant in the first year of cultivation and persisted in single-species swards but not in mixtures from the second year onwards. The plants of the cultivar 'Elena DS' allowed the development of clover in the mixture, resulting in an increase in herbage productivity and crude protein content. The results of the experiment suggest that a mixture of perennial ryegrass cultivars can be used in swards, as a similar dry matter yield was recorded compared to a single-cultivar swards. However, the benefits of swards may vary from season to season, and more research is needed to assess the impact of a mixture of cultivars on grass productivity and quality with ageing of swards and accumulation in different environmental conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between plasma amino acid (AA) concentration and urinary nitrogen (N) concentration of dairy heifers offered cut plantain or perennial ryegrass-white clover pasture indoors. Twelve Jersey-Friesian heifers aged 9–10 months were equally assigned to two dietary treatments (plantain vs. perennial ryegrass-white clover pasture) in a completely randomised design. Urinary N concentration was lower in plantain fed heifers (1.4 g/kg) than in perennial ryegrass-white clover pasture fed heifers (3.4 g/kg). Feeding cut plantain or perennial ryegrass-white clover pasture did not have an effect on either plasma essential AA, non-essential AA or total AA. There was no association found between plasma AA concentration and urinary N concentration in the present study. Therefore, the urinary N concentration reduction in plantain fed heifers compared with perennial ryegrass-white clover pasture cannot be attributed by the differences in plasma AA. We tested whether selection of ryegrass for reduced root hair length and density would reduce root competition on white clover for phosphate (P). A Rhizosheath Selection Tool was used to select two ryegrass populations with contrasting root hair traits. These were grown at five soil P levels in a glasshouse experiment and rhizosheath trait selection had no effect on growth or shoot P concentrations. The ryegrass populations were also grown with white clover in soils with Olsen P12 or 19 mg L−1. In the Olsen P12 soil, clover grown with the smaller rhizosheath ryegrass had significantly heavier shoots and contained more P than clover grown with the larger rhizosheath ryegrass. In the Olsen P19 soil differences in ryegrass rhizosheath had no effect on clover growth. The results showed that under the experimental conditions, grass-clover competition for soil P could be modified by the rhizosheath traits of ryegrass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ireland's competitive advantage in sheepmeat production is based on the efficient and cost effective production and utilisation of pasture. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of binary mixtures of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) plus a companion forage on ewe and lamb performance at pasture. Five sward mixtures were compared, namely; i) perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.;PRG), ii) PRG plus white clover (Trifolium repens L.;PRG + WC), iii) PRG plus red clover (Trifolium pratense L.;PRG + RC), iv) PRG plus plantain (Plantago lanceolate L.;PRG + Plan) and v) PRG plus chicory (Chicorium intybus L.;PRG + Chic). Five farmlets with one sward treatment assigned to each were established which 23 ewes plus their lambs grazed from March to December for the years 2018 to 2021 inclusive. Farmlets were rotationally grazed, stocked at 11.5 ewes/ha and received 130 kg nitrogen/ha/year. Lambs were weaned on average at 15 weeks of age. Post-weaning a leader-follower grazing system was implemented with lambs grazing ahead of the ewes. Post weaning, lambs were weighed fortnightly and drafted at a live weight of 42 kg in June and increasing by 1 kg per month thereafter to produce a target carcass weight of 20 kg. Results show that lamb lifetime average daily gain (ADG) was greater for lambs grazing all binary sward mixtures relative to grazing PRG. Relative to PRG, lamb lifetime ADG was increased by between 17 g/day (PRG + Plan; P < 0.01) to 31 g/day (PRG + RC, and PRG + Chic; P < 0.001) and subsequently the number of days required to reach slaughter (DTS) was reduced by between 15.8 days (PRG + Plan; P < 0.01) to 28.6 days (PRG + RC; P < 0.001) with the addition of a companion forage. As a result of lower DTS, the average total number of anthelmintic treatments administered per lamb was significantly reduced for lambs grazing on all of the binary sward mixtures relative to PRG (P < 0.001). Scanned litter size and ewe milk yield were similar across all sward types as were ewe body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) from mating up until 6 weeks post-lambing (P > 0.05). Of the ewes retained from one production year to the next, those grazing PRG + WC, PRG + RC and PRG + Plan had a greater BW than those grazing PRG at the second mating event (P < 0.05), whilst, PRG + RC, PRG + Plan and PRG + Chic ewes had a greater BCS than PRG ewes (P < 0.05). Objective: The aim of the present study was to identify the impact of early weaning of lambs at approximately seven weeks of age onto a herb-clover mix on the liveweight gain of lambs and their dams. Methods: In 2015, twin-born lambs that weighed a minimum of 16 kg (n = 134) were randomly allocated to one of three treatments: i) Early-weaned (58 days after the midpoint of lambing) onto an unrestricted allowance (>1,200 kg dry matter/ha) of herb-clover mix (HerbEW); ii) Lambs+dams unweaned onto an unrestricted allowance of herb-clover mix until conventional weaning (95 days after the midpoint of lambing) (HerbCW); iii) Lambs+ dams unweaned onto an unrestricted allowance of grass-clover pasture until conventional weaning (GrassCW). In 2016, twin-born lambs that weighed a minimum of 16 kg (n = 170) were randomly allocated to one of four treatments: i), ii), iii) (similar to 2015) and iv) Lambs+ dams unweaned onto a restricted allowance (<1,200 kg dry matter/ha) of grass-clover pasture until conventional weaning (93 days after the midpoint of lambing) (Restricted-GrassCW). Results: In 2015, liveweight gain from L58 to L95 of HerbCW and GrassCW lambs did not differ (p>0.05), but were greater than HerbEW lambs. In 2016, HerbCW lambs had greater (p<0.05) liveweight gains from L51 to L93 than GrassCW followed by HerbEW and Restricted- GrassCW lambs. In 2015, liveweight gain from L58 to L95 of HerbEW ewes were greater than both GrassCW and HerbCW ewes while in 2016, liveweight gain of from L51 to L93 GrassCW and HerbCW ewes did not differ (p>0.05) but were greater (p<0.05) than those of HerbEW and Restricted-GrassCW ewes. Conclusion: These results indicate that when grass-clover pasture supply can be maintained at unrestricted intake level, there may be no benefit of weaning lambs early. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Including forage legumes in dairy systems can help address increasing environmental/economic concerns about perennial ryegrass monoculture pastures. This work investigated the effect of substituting fresh‐cut grass with increasing quantities of fresh‐cut white clover (WC) on milk fatty acid (FA) profile and transfer efficiency of dietary linoleic (LA) and α‐linolenic (ALNA) acids to milk fat. Three groups of three crossbred dairy cows were used in a 3 × 3 crossover design. Dietary treatments were 0 g kg−1 WC + 600 g kg−1 grass, 200 g kg−1 WC + 400 g kg−1 grass, and 400 g kg−1 WC + 200 g kg−1 grass. All treatments were supplemented with 400 g kg−1 concentrates on a dry matter basis. Cows had a 19‐day adaptation period to the experimental diet before a 6‐day measurement period in individual tie stalls. RESULTS: Increasing dietary WC did not affect dry matter intake, milk yield or milk concentrations of fat, protein or lactose. Milk polyunsaturated FA concentrations (total n‐3, total n‐6, LA and ALNA) and transfer efficiency of LA and ALNA were increased with increasing dietary WC supply. This study examined how silages of different grass and clover species affect dry matter (DM) intake, milk production, and eating behavior in dairy cows. The primary growth of perennial ryegrass (early and late harvested), festulolium, tall fescue, red clover, and white clover swards were cut, wilted, and ensiled without additives. Thirty-six Danish Holstein cows were fed ad libitum with total mixed rations containing 70% forage on DM basis in an incomplete Latin square design. The forage source was either 1 of the 6 pure silages or late perennial ryegrass silage mixed (50:50 on DM basis) with either red clover or white clover silage. Intake of DM, milk yield, and milk lactose concentration were higher, whereas milk fat and protein concentrations were lower when cows were fed clover compared with grass. No differences in DM intake and milk composition were detected between cows fed red clover and white clover, but white clover resulted in higher milk yield than red clover. Lower body weight, probably caused by lower rumen fill, in cows fed pure white clover compared with the other treatments indicated that intake was regulated physiologically instead of physically. Cows fed early perennial ryegrass, which had the highest silage organic matter digestibility (OMD), did not produce the expected amount of energy-corrected milk (ECM) compared with the other treatments based on the amount of OM digested in the gastrointestinal tract, but the reason was unclear. Across all other grass species, ECM was related to OMD. Inclusion of 50% clover in the diet increased ECM with 2.3 kg/d, and the response to OMD was comparable to the response for the grass silages. In situ fiber degradation profile parameters indicated that fiber in festulolium differed compared with fiber in the other grass species and resembled fiber in clover. Drinking and eating behavior differed markedly in cows fed pure white clover compared with the other treatments. Water intake per drinking bout was comparable among treatments, but cows fed pure white clover had higher drinking bout duration and reduced drinking rate. Additionally, meal size was smaller for cows fed pure white clover compared with the other treatments, for which meal size was similar. In conclusion, differences in ECM between different grass species can be explained by differences in OMD, and at a given OMD level inclusion of clover in the diet increased ECM. An experiment was conducted to compare the rumen fermentation and degradability of three forage treatments. A perennial ryegrass (PRG; Lolium perenne), perennial ryegrass and white clover (Trifolium pratense) (PRGWC) and multispecies forage (MULTI), containing two grass species; perennial ryegrass and timothy (Phleum pratense); two clover species; white clover and red clover (Trifolium repens); and two herb species; chicory (Cichorium intybus) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata), were compared. Six rumen fistulated lactating dairy cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square experiment consisting of 3 periods lasting 21-days. Cows were allowed ad libitum access to fresh forage and offered 2.71 kg DM concentrate each day. During days 1 – 14 of each period, cows were acclimatized to dietary treatments before entering a 7 – day sampling period. Indwelling rumen pH probes were inserted into the rumen of each cow on day 15 and 16. Rumen fluid samples were taken on day 18 every 2 h for rumen volatile fatty acid and ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 N) analysis. Forage dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) degradability was assessed via in sacco incubation beginning on day 19 of each period. Treatment had no effect on dry matter intake (DMI) or milk yield. There was no difference in mean rumen pH between treatments. The rumen pH of cows offered MULTI was below pH 6.0 for a higher percentage of time than the other treatments, however the concentration of acetic acid in the rumen of cows was similar between treatments. Effective degradability (ED) of DM was higher (P = 0.003) for MULTI (0.77) compared to PRG (0.68) and PRGWC (0.66). The soluble CP fraction of MULTI and PRGWC was significantly lower than that of PRG (P = 0.007), though PRGWC had the highest rumen ammonia concentration of all treatments (P = 0.002). MULTI had the highest ED and rate of DM degradation in the rumen, and lowest soluble CP of all treatments. Multispecies forages can support milk production in lactating dairy cows; however, care must be taken to ensure adequate dietary NDF due to the low fiber concentration and highly degradable nature of the forage. Grassland cultivation can mobilize large pools of N in the soil, with the potential for N leaching and N2O emissions. Spraying with the nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) before cultivation was simulated by use of soil columns in which the residue distribution corresponded to plowing or rotovation to study the effects of soil-residue contact on N transformations. DMPP was sprayed on aboveground parts of ryegrass and white clover plants before incorporation. During a 42-day incubation, soil mineral N dynamics, potential ammonia oxidation (PAO), denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA), nitrifier and denitrifier populations, and N2O emissions were investigated. The soil NO3- pool was enriched with 15N to trace sources of N2O. Ammonium was rapidly released from decomposing residues, and PAO was stimulated in soil near residues. DMPP effectively reduced NH4+ transformation irrespective of residue distribution. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) were both present, but only the AOB amoA transcript abundance correlated with PAO. DMPP inhibited the transcription of AOB amoA genes. Denitrifier genes and transcripts (nirK, nirS, and clades I and II of nosZ) were recovered, and a correlation was found between nirS mRNA and DEA. DMPP showed no adverse effects on the abundance or activity of denitrifiers. The 15N enrichment of N2O showed that denitrification was responsible for 80 to 90% of emissions. With support from a control experiment without NO3- amendment, it was concluded that DMPP will generally reduce the potential for leaching of residue-derived N, whereas the effect of DMPP on N2O emissions will be significant only when soil NO3- availability is limiting. The release of organic compounds from plant roots (rhizodeposits) and their subsequent utilization by soil microbial communities is a key process linking atmospheric and terrestrial carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. However, the effects of land-use types on rhizodeposit-mediated alteration of microbial community structure and its consequences for soil C cycle are still, largely, unknown. Therefore, we used 13C-PLFA-SIP to evaluate the rhizosphere C fluxes to microorganisms in a monoculture crop (oilseed rape, Brassica napus L.), a mixed grassland (dominated by Lolium perenne L. mixed with clover Trifolium repens L.), and a tree (willow, Salix schwerinii E.L. Wolf and Salix viminalis L.) within an agroforestry system. Though harboring similar total microbial biomass, less 13C was recovered in microorganisms in soil under willow (0.017 % of 13C input) after 14 days as compared to rape (0.03 %) and grassland (0.09 %). Across three land use types, gram negative bacteria incorporated most of the 13C (28–42 % of total 13C labeled PLFAs), followed by fungi and gram positive bacteria (12–18 %) and less abundance groups (e.g. actinomycetes, <5 %). The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal biomarker 16:1ω5c was enriched with 13C in soil under grassland (8 % of total 13C labeled PLFAs). The 13C incorporation into gram positive bacteria was higher in soil under willow than under grassland and rape. By contrast, 42 % of total 13C labeled PLFAs were attributed to gram negative bacteria in soil under rape. Overall, our results demonstrated that pronounced differences in microbial community structure and subsequent microbial C utilization between land-use types could affect soil C cycles and storage. Multispecies pastures containing grasses, N-fixing legumes and forage herbs can maintain high herbage dry matter (DM) yield, while reducing the need for fertiliser N inputs thus potentially reducing harmful N losses such as nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission and nitrate (NO 3 −) leaching to the wider environment. However, our understanding of these processes in grassland swards of contrasting composition is still very limited. A lysimeter experiment was carried out over 12 months to test the hypotheses that (1) cumulative and (2) seasonal N 2 O emission and N leaching would be highest from the Perennial Ryegrass only (PRG, 250 kg N ha-1 yr-1) treatment compared to three other treatments; Perennial Ryegrass and Low White Clover (PRG+LWC, 90 kg N ha-1 yr-1), Perennial Ryegrass and High White Clover (PRG+HWC, 0 kg N ha-1 yr-1) and Perennial Ryegrass, White Clover and Ribwort Plantain (PRG+WC+P, 45 kg N ha-1 yr-1) and (3) that the soil N cycling pathways (nitrification/denitrification) linked to these N losses would be different between treatments. Cumulative N 2 O emissions (2.74–3.25 kg N 2 O-N ha-1), leached N (10.91–13.70 kg N ha-1), DM yields (5083–5493 kg DM ha-1 yr-1) and N uptake (122–169 kg N ha-1 yr-1) were not significantly different between treatments. Nitrogen yield scaled N 2 O emissions were significantly lower from all other treatments compared to the high fertiliser N input PRG monoculture. A significant interaction between treatment and season showed that in Spring, N 2 O emission was significantly higher from PRG (1.39 kg N 2 O-N ha-1) and PRG+LWC (1.19 kg N 2 O-N ha-1) than PRG+HWC (0.81 kg N 2 O-N ha-1) and PRG+WC+P (0.85 kg N 2 O-N ha-1). This result was linked to a numerically lower fraction of nitrification (F N) for PRG+WC+P potentially indicating that biological nitrification inhibition associated with ribwort plantain could lessen N 2 O emissions. Seven forage types (diploid and tetraploid perennial ryegrass, Italian ryegrass and hybrid ryegrass, a low-input mixture of perennial ryegrass, cocksfoot, timothy and meadow fescue, a mixture of perennial ryegrass and white clover, and monoculture of red clover) were sown in late July 2004. Each received one of four rates of dairy cattle slurry in three annual applications by trailing shoe, which supplied average nitrogen (N) inputs of 0·0, 114·9, 204·8 and 301·2 kg N ha−1 annum−1. Treatments were cut either three or four times annually over four years. Average dry-matter yield ( DM) response to slurry N was 15·6 kg DM kg−1 N. Lowest recovery of slurry N was in the second application each year (after first cut). The data suggest that slurry applied to Italian ryegrass, and also to swards containing legumes on soils with high phosphorus content, will produce a lower DM response to slurry N and result in a lower slurry N recovery than on swards of perennial ryegrass or cocksfoot-dominant low-input mixtures. Apparent recovery of slurry N was low at the second cut, especially when first-cut yields had been high. To increase ruminant production efficiency, the environmental impact of growing forage must be reduced, through lowering system inputs and increasing crop resilience to extreme weather. Here we examined the role of red clover (cv. AberClaret) in minimising nitrogen (N) requirements, alongside two novel grass varieties, (1) a festulolium (cv. AberNiche), developed for drought tolerance, with potential for deep-rooting, and (2) a ryegrass hybrid (cv. AberEcho), developed for high-sugar content, which may enhance ruminant N-uptake in-vivo. Field trials were conducted at two UK sites, growing festulolium and ryegrass ± red clover (at 29% of the seed mix weight) at a range of N fertilisation rates (0 – 600 kg N ha−1) for 2 years (six harvests). We assessed sward performance (N offtake, herbage quality, and grass N use efficiency), rooting depth and N transfer from clover to grasses using 15N natural abundance. Across both sites and years, dry matter yield and herbage-N content were overall greater from the swards that included clover. Dry matter yields from festulolium were not greater than from ryegrass under the drought conditions experienced in 2018, despite its greater root mass. Agronomic efficiency of fertiliser N was similar between grasses (19 – 22%), however the festulolium more effectively used endogenous soil N than the ryegrass. Inclusion of clover in the sward affected forage quality, with increased crude protein and metabolisable energy content and reduced sugar and fibre (NDF) content. Among the grass types, metabolisable energy was greater and NDF content less for ryegrass than for festulolium. A strong reliance on biological N fixation (80 – 94%) for clover was observed, however, N transfer from clover to the neighbouring grass was not evident from the ẟ15N signatures. We conclude that red clover is a viable fertiliser-N replacement strategy in short-term leys, and that grass varieties with improved herbage quality may provide a better option for optimising sward performance than drought tolerant grass varieties. • Festulolium gave no yield advantage over a ryegrass hybrid under drought conditions. • Ryegrass hybrid provided higher quality feed without compromising yield. • Herbage yields were greater when red clover was included within the sward. • Inclusion of red clover with grass increased sward N and metabolisable energy content. • Including red clover in grass swards replaced the need for N fertilization. In dairy systems, grass–clover swards are fertilized with on–farm cattle slurry as a basic dressing and often supplemented with mineral fertilizer throughout the season. Uncertainty remains on consequences for N input from atmospheric N 2 -fixation by grassland legumes. The aim of this study was to examine the N response of slurry versus mineral N fertilization on clover dynamics, the proportion of N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) and the quantitative N 2 -fixation (qBNF) using the 15N isotope dilution method. This was done in an on farm setting at two sites in two years with increasing rates of N fertilizer (0–480 kg available N ha-1) either of mineral N only or combined with application of cattle slurry. The leys were at one site composed a 2–species mixture of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and at the other site of a 4–species mixture of white clover, red clover (Trifolium pretense L.), festulolium (Festulolium braunii) and ryegrass. Species dynamics were significantly affected by fertilizer rate in the 2–species sward and by fertilizer rate and type in the 4–species sward. Reduction of the clover proportion in response to fertilization was due to a clover yield decrease (2–species sward) or a grass yield increase (4–species sward). In the 4–species sward, in treatments with mineral N only %Ndfa decreased markedly with N rate, whereas the corresponding slurry + mineral N treatments did not. Thus, apart from fertilization with mineral N only at one site the general picture was a relatively high (>80%) %Ndfa over the season when the N level was below 200–300 kg available N ha-1. The qBNF of the harvested biomass in sward without fertilization reached 193–216 kg N ha-1 in the 2–species sward and 203–286 kg N ha-1 in the 4–species sward. Clover persisted at high fertilization rates, but qBNF was reduced to 16–79 kg N ha-1 and 58–163 kg N ha-1 in 2– and 4–species swards, respectively. Interestingly, in the 4–species sward amended with slurry + mineral N, qBNF was high and independent of fertilization rate. In order to understand the effect of phytotoxic tropospheric ozone (O3) on terrestrial vegetation, we quantified the impact of current O3 concentration ([O3]) on net ecosystem production (NEP) when compared to the conditions of the pre-industrial era. We compared and tested linear mixed-effects models based on [O3] and stomatal O3 flux (Fsto). The managed ryegrass–clover (Lolium perenne and Trifolium pratense) mixture was grown on arable land in the Czech Republic, Central Europe. Values of [O3] and Fsto were measured and calculated based on resistance analogy, respectively, while NEP was calculated from eddy covariance CO2 fluxes. We found the Fsto-based model more precise when compared to measured NEP. High Fsto was found even at low [O3], while broad summer maximum of [O3] was not necessarily followed by significant NEP decline, due to low soil water content leading to a low stomatal conductivity and Fsto. Comparing to low pre-industrial O3 conditions, current levels of O3 resulted in the reduction of cumulative NEP over the entire growing season, up to 29.7 and 13.5% when the [O3]-based and Fsto-based model was applied, respectively. During the growing season, an O3-induced reduction of NEP ranged between 13.1% in May and 26.2% in July when compared to pre-industrial Fsto levels. Looking to the future, high [O3] and Fsto may lead to the reduction of current NEP by approximately 13.3% on average during the growing season, but may increase by up to 61–86.6% in autumn, indicating further O3-induced acceleration of the senescence. These findings indicate the importance of Fsto and its inclusion into the models estimating O3 effects on terrestrial vegetation. Simple Summary: The present study simulated the effects of different dairy cow diets based on local feeding strategies on enteric methane (CH4) emissions and surpluses of crude protein (CP) in small-scale dairy systems (SSDS). Our study evaluated five scenarios of supplementation (S): without supplementation (control diet), meaning no supplements were provided, only pasture (S1); pasture supplemented with 4.5 kg dry matter (DM)/cow/day of commercial concentrate (CC) (S2); supplemented with 200 g DM/kg per milk produced of CC (S3); supplemented with ground maize grains and wet distiller brewery grains (S4); and S4 plus maize silage (S5). In addition, two pasture managements (cut-and-carry versus grazing) and two varieties of legumes (red clover vs. white clover) were considered. The results suggest that methane emissions and large nitrogen surpluses in the diet are affected by the type of supplementation given to cows, in addition to the management and chemical composition of the pastures offered. In SSDS, it is possible to formulate diets with local inputs to reduce excess nutrients and dependence on external inputs, increasing feed efficiency and reducing costs (excess of CP in the diet) and CH4 emissions. In cattle, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and nutrient balance are influenced by factors such as diet composition, intake, and digestibility. This study evaluated CH4 emissions and surpluses of crude protein, using five simulated scenarios of supplementation in small-scale dairy systems (SSDS). In addition, two pasture managements (cut-and-carry versus grazing) and two varieties of legumes (red clover vs. white clover) were considered. The diets were tested considering similar milk yield and chemical composition; CH4 emission was estimated using Tier-2 methodology from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the data were analyzed in a completely randomized 5 × 2 × 2 factorial design. Differences (p < 0.05) were found in predicted CH4 emissions per kg of milk produced (g kg−1 FCM 3.5%). The lowest predicted CH4 emissions were found for S3 and S4 as well as for pastures containing white clover. Lower dietary surpluses of CP (p < 0.05) were observed for the control diet (1320 g CP/d), followed by S5 (1793 g CP/d), compared with S2 (2175 g CP/d), as well as in cut-and-carry management with red clover. A significant correlation (p < 0.001) was observed between dry matter intake and CH4 emissions (g−1 and per kg of milk produced). It is concluded that the environmental impact of formulating diets from local inputs (S3 and S4) can be reduced by making them more efficient in terms of methane kg−1 of milk in SSDS.
