In recent years, the main grain-producing areas in the west of Jilin have gradually concentrated in the perennial irrigation areas and supplementary irrigation areas in the north, and the stress degree of grain irrigation water resources is gradually increasing. Therefore, this paper selects the arid and semiarid area in the west of Jilin Province as the research area and compares and analyzes the modeling process and simulation accuracy of the temporal and spatial distribution of food security production and total water resources. Based on the center of gravity model, this paper studies the temporal and spatial distribution of food security production and total water resources in Western Jilin. It can be seen that after 2018, rice and wheat show a fluctuating upward trend, and their values rise from 0.612 to 0.786 and 0.356 to 0.612, respectively; the rise of corn is small, showing an inverted "U" trend, which first increases from 0.693 in 2018 to 0.701 in 2019 and then decreases to 0.671 in 2021; By comparing the precipitation statistics in different years, the inverted "U" trend of corn irrigation water efficiency may be related to the sudden increase of precipitation. The center of gravity model is used to analyze the evolution trend of the center of gravity of grain production and water resources in Western Jilin from the national and regional levels, and the spatiotemporal coupling degree of the center of gravity of grain production and water resources is explored through the two-factor center of gravity coupling situation model. Nitrogen (N) utilization for crop production under N deficiency conditions is subject to a trade-off between maintaining specific leaf N content (SLN) important for radiation-use efficiency versus maintaining leaf area (LA) development, important for light capture. This paper aims to explore how maize deals with this trade-off through responses in SLN, LA and their underlying traits during the vegetative and reproductive growth stages. In a 10-year N fertilization trial in Jilin province, Northeast China, three N fertilizer levels have been maintained: N deficiency (N0), low N supply (N1) and high N supply (N2). We analysed data from years 8 and 10 of this experiment for two common hybrids. Under N deficiency, maize plants maintained LA and decreased SLN during vegetative stages, while both LA and SLN decreased comparably during reproductive stages. Canopy SLA (specific leaf area, cm2 g–1) decreased sharply during vegetative stages and slightly during reproductive stages, mainly because senesced leaves in the lower canopy had a higher SLA. In the vegetative stage, maize maintained LA at low N by maintaining leaf biomass (albeit hence having N content/mass) and slightly increasing SLA. These responses to N deficiency were stronger in maize hybrid XY335 than in ZD958. We conclude that the main strategy of maize to cope with low N is to maintain LA, mainly by increasing SLA throughout the plant but only during the vegetative growth phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mastering the lodging risk of planting environment is of great significance to the optimal layout of maize varieties and the breeding of lodging resistant varieties. However, the existing lodging risk models are still at the stage of single or multi-factors independent analysis, and lack of assessment for different lodging types. To address this issue, based on the mechanism of different lodging types, the Archimedean copula function was used to describe the joint probability distribution of wind speed and precipitation, and the lodging risk assessment model of maize was established. By comparing the goodness of fit, when the rank correlation coefficient of these two is positive and negative, the corresponding optimal joint probability distribution functions are the Gumbel copula and Frank copula. According to the spatial distribution of lodging risk, the area from Liaodong Bay northward to Tongyu, Jilin province in the Northeast and the North China Plain has a high frequency of lodging, in which the probability of stalk lodging is two to four times that of root lodging. Finally, we discussed how to apply the lodging risk distribution results to optimize the maize variety test sites to improve the efficiency and reliability of the existing test system. Drought and floods affect the growth and yield of maize, affecting food security. Therefore, it is crucial to assess maize's drought and waterlogging status in various growth stages. We used phenological and daily meteorological data and spatial analysis to identify the drought and waterlogging conditions of spring maize in Northeast China in eight growth stages. We calculated the crop water surplus/deficit index and used the national standard for maize drought and waterlogging. The results indicate a significant decreasing trend of effective precipitation in Northeast China. The maize's water requirements changed during the growing period. The ranking of the daily water requirements of maize from high to low in the different growth stages was the flowering stage to the silking stage (6.9 mm/d), the tasseling stage to the flowering stage (6.1 mm/d), the jointing stage to the tasseling stage (4.9 mm/d), the seven-leaf stage to the jointing stage (3.4 mm/d), the silking stage to the harvesting stage (2.0 mm/d), the emergence stage to the three-leaf stage (1.4 mm/d), the three-leaf stage to the seven-leaf stage (1.3 mm/d), and the sowing stage to the emergence stage (1.2 mm/d). Drought occurred primarily in the early growth and development stage, and the most severe drought conditions were observed in the sowing to emergence stages and the emergence to the three-leaf stages in most areas in Northeast China. Waterlogging occurred predominantly in the flowering to the silking stages and the silking to the maturity stages in southeast Liaoning and parts of Jilin. Inner Mongolia had the lowest soil moisture conditions and was unsuitable for maize growth, followed by Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning. The dominant meteorological factors affecting the drought and waterlogging status of maize in different growth stages were precipitation and wind speed, followed by the minimum temperature, relative humidity, sunshine hours, and maximum temperature. The average temperature did not influence the drought and waterlogging status. The results provide a basis for selecting drought-resistant varieties and preventing waterlogging. Examining the effects of climate change on spring maize, and its suitability under dynamic cultivation patterns, will aid strategic decision-making for future agricultural adaptation. This paper investigates the climate suitability of spring maize, based on daily data from 50 meteorological stations, and statistics on maize yield and area at the county level in Jilin Province, China, between 1986 and 2015. Based on a significant correlation between the cultivation patterns indicator ≥10 °C accumulated temperature (AAT10) and the average yield (R2 = 0.503), the yield data are used to determine suitable thresholds for meteorological factors under the dynamic cultivation pattern, and a fuzzy fitness approach is used to evaluate the climate suitability. The results showed a good agreement between suitability estimates and scaled observed yields (average d = 0.705). Moreover, good consistency between cultivation patterns, climate suitability and yield show that the late-maturing varieties of maize have gradually moved northward and eastward, and the areas of high suitability and high yield have gradually expanded eastward. To analyze three row orientations (south-north, east-west, southwestern 20°) and two row spacings (‘65 + 65’, ‘160 + 40’), we investigated the effect of row orientation and planting pattern on photosynthetic performance, physiological and biochemical indicators related to the aging of leaves. Results revealed that during maturity stage, in north-south and east-west, the initial fluorescence (Fo) at ‘65 + 65’ were higher than those under‘160 + 40’; the maximum quantum yield of PS2 photochemistry(ΦP0), basal quantum yield of non-photochemical processes in PS2(ΦN0)of the lower leaves and photosynthetic rate of the upper and ear leaves under‘160 + 40’were higher than those under‘65 + 65’. The polyphenoloxidase (POD) activities of leaves at different positions under ‘160 + 40’ were higher than that under‘65 + 65’, while the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was lower. The photosynthesis rate, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity of leaves at different positions under southwestern 20° ‘160 + 40’ were higher than others. Whilst MDA content ‘160 + 40’ were lower. Therefore, in De Hui City, Jilin Province, southwestern 20° ‘160 + 40’ delayed leaf senescence at the late stage of growth of maize, as well as the effect of increasing maize yield was most obvious. Frequent droughts and waterlogging events are a threat to food security. An understanding of the spatial and temporal variations that occur during such events is essential when conducting a regional and/or global drought and waterlogging assessment. The goal of this study is to define a comprehensive index that considers the continuum system of atmosphere, crops, and soil moisture impacts on droughts and waterlogging events, and to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of such events in the development of maize. The results show that the proposed comprehensive drought and waterlogging index (CDWI) can bring together the advantages of a single drought and waterlogging index and reasonably describe its range. During the study period, the annual trends of the CDWI decreased at different growth stages from 1982 to 2015, whereas the CDWI did not show significant spatial heterogeneity during any particular stage. Increasing trends of CDWI over 0.019/year were found in the northern part of Midwestern Jilin Province from the emergence to tasseling stages. In addition, decreasing trends were observed in the study area from the tasseling to maturation stages.
