Monitoring the spatio-temporal variations of surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl, a proxy of phytoplankton biomass) greatly benefited from the availability of continuous and global ocean color satellite measurements from 1997 onward. These two decades of satellite observations are however still too short to provide a comprehensive description of Chl variations at decadal to multi-decadal timescales. This paper investigates the ability of a machine learning approach (a non-linear statistical approach based on Support Vector Regression, hereafter SVR) to reconstruct global spatio-temporal Chl variations from selected surface oceanic and atmospheric physical parameters. With a limited training period (13 years), we first demonstrate that Chl variability from a 32- years global physical-biogeochemical simulation can generally be skillfully reproduced with a SVR using the model surface variables as input parameters. We then apply the SVR to reconstruct satellite Chl observations using the physical predictors from the above numerical model and show that the Chl reconstructed by this SVR more accurately reproduces some aspects of observed Chl variability and trends compared to the model simulation. This SVR is able to reproduce the main modes of interannual Chl variations depicted by satellite observations in most regions, including El Niño signature in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. In stark contrast with the trends simulated by the biogeochemical model, it also accurately captures spatial patterns of Chl trends estimated by satellite data, with a Chl increase in most extratropical regions and a Chl decrease in the center of the subtropical gyres, although the amplitude of these trends are underestimated by half. Results from our SVR reconstruction over the entire period (1979--2010) also suggest that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation drives a significant part of decadal Chl variations in both the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. Overall, this study demonstrates that non-linear statistical reconstructions can be complementary tools to in situ and satellite observations as well as conventional physical-biogeochemical numerical simulations to reconstruct and investigate Chl decadal variability. The Agulhas Current (AC) is a critical component of global ocean circulation. However, due to a lack of multidecadal observations, it is not clear how the AC has changed in response to anthropogenic forcing. A recent observational study suggests a broadening and slight weakening of the AC in the past few decades, while others suggest a strengthening of the AC during the historical period. In this paper, we find substantial internal variability of the AC on decadal to multidecadal time scales in high-resolution models. We show that the AC consistently exhibits two modes of decadal and multidecadal (i.e., low frequency) variability in a series of high-resolution climate models: a uniform mode that is largely associated with changes in the AC strength and a dipole mode that is mainly related to width changes of the AC. We demonstrate that the uniform mode is mainly forced externally by the decadal variations of the wind field and presents a decline under global warming, suggesting a weakening of the AC in response to anthropogenic forcing. The dipole mode, on the other hand, is mainly due to internal dynamics and does not show a trend during the historical period. Using a quasigeostrophic model that captures the dipole mode, we attribute the dipole mode to low-frequency potential vorticity changes in the western boundary, driven by a divergence of relative potential vorticity due to eddy activity. Changes in the amplitude of decadal climate variability over the twentieth century have been noted, with most evidence derived from tropical Pacific sea surface temperature records. However, the length, spatial coverage, and stability of most instrumental records are insufficient to robustly identify such nonstationarity, or resolve its global spatial structure. Here, it is found that the long-term, stable, observing platform provided by tide gauges reveals a dramatic increase in the amplitude and spatial coherence of decadal (11–14-yr period) coastal sea level (ζ) variability between 1960 and 2000. During this epoch, western North American ζ was approximately out of phase with ζ in Sydney, Australia, and led northeastern U.S. ζ by approximately 1–2 years. The amplitude and timing of changes in decadal ζ variability in these regions are consistent with changes in atmospheric variability. Specifically, central equatorial Pacific wind stress and Labrador Sea heat flux are highly coherent and exhibit contemporaneous, order-of-magnitude increases in decadal power. These statistical relationships have a mechanistic underpinning: Along the western North American coastline, equatorial winds are known to drive rapidly propagating ζ signals along equatorial and coastal waveguides, while a 1–2-yr lag between Labrador Sea heat fluxes and northeastern United States ζ is consistent with a remotely forced, buoyancy-driven, mechanism. Tide gauges thus provide strong independent support for an increase in interbasin coherence on decadal time scales over the second half of the twentieth century, with implications for both the interpretation and prediction of climate and sea level variability. Significance Statement: Decadal climate variability influences the frequency and severity of many natural hazards (e.g., drought), with considerable human and ecological impacts. Understanding observed changes and predicting future impacts relies upon an understanding of the physical processes and any changes in their variability and relationship over time. However, identifying such changes requires very long observational records. This paper leverages a large set of tide gauge records to show that decadal time scale coastal sea level variability increased dramatically in the second half of the twentieth century, in widely separated geographic locations. The western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (WNPAC) significantly affects East Asian climate. Previous studies have elucidated interannual variability of the WNPAC associated with El Niño, but decadal variability of the WNPAC remains unknown. The present paper investigates the dominant modes of decadal variability of the WNPAC by using observational data. The first decadal mode, characterized by an anomalous anticyclone centered over the western North Pacific, is associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). The relationship between the first mode and the PDO shifted from in phase to out of phase around 1966. From 1900 to 1966 when the PDO and the first mode are in phase, the anticyclone is maintained by the effects of both the strengthened Aleutian low through meridional atmospheric forcing and Indian Ocean warming through enhanced zonal Walker circulation. From 1967 to 2012, the anticyclone is induced by cold SST anomalies over the central equatorial Pacific when the PDO and the first mode are out of phase. The second decadal mode is characterized by an anomalous anticyclone extending from southeastern China to the Philippine Sea and is associated with the Maritime Continent (MC). This anticyclone resides in the sinking branch of the local Hadley circulation, triggered by enhanced convection associated with the MC warming from 1900 to 2012. Variability of the Indian Ocean (IO) shallow overturning circulation during 1958–2017 was investigated, which consisted of a cross‐equator cell (CEC) and a southern subtropical cell (SSTC). Structures of these shallow cells were examined through the velocity sections and the transport steamfunction patterns based on the newly released Ocean Reanalysis System 5 data set, and the results showed that the returning flows, at the subsurface, of the shallow cells mainly presented at the western boundary while absented in the ocean interior. Strengths of the IO shallow cells were then determined according to the annual‐mean meridional streamfunction profiles. Both the CEC and the SSTC exhibited significant variability on interannual to decadal timescales during 1958–2017, and this variability mainly resulted from changes in both meridional Ekman transports and meridional geostrophic flows in the upper layer, and each component could dominate the shallow cells' variations in certain years. Contributions of the geostrophic currents to the shallow cells were likely opposite to that of the Ekman transport in the South Indian Ocean during years when the latter reached the extremes. The CEC and the SSTC were negatively correlated during the research period. The CEC exhibited a decadal weakening during 2000–2015, contributing to the decadal increasing of the IO heat content, while the SSTC only experienced very little strengthening. Here this paper presents a comprehensively study of the interannual to decadal variability of the IO shallow cells and the corresponding reasons and influences and tried to link these variations with other variations in the IO. As climate change accelerates, societies and climate-sensitive socioeconomic sectors cannot continue to rely on the past as a guide to possible future climate hazards. Operational decadal predictions offer the potential to inform current adaptation and increase resilience by filling the important gap between seasonal forecasts and climate projections. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has recognized this and in 2017 established the WMO Lead Centre for Annual to Decadal Climate Predictions (shortened to "Lead Centre" below), which annually provides a large multimodel ensemble of predictions covering the next 5 years. This international collaboration produces a prediction that is more skillful and useful than any single center can achieve. One of the main outputs of the Lead Centre is the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (GADCU), a consensus forecast based on these predictions. This update includes maps showing key variables, discussion on forecast skill, and predictions of climate indices such as the global mean near-surface temperature and Atlantic multidecadal variability. it also estimates the probability of the global mean temperature exceeding 1.5°C above preindustrial levels for at least 1 year in the next 5 years, which helps policy-makers understand how closely the world is approaching this goal of the Paris Agreement. Recent studies using data from the OSNAP observational campaign and from numerical ocean models suggest that the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea may be more significant for formation of upper North Atlantic Deep Water than the Labrador Sea. Here, we present a set of hindcast integrations of a global 1/4° NEMO simulation from 1958 until nearly the present day, forced with three standard forcing data sets. We use the surface‐forced stream function, estimated from surface buoyancy fluxes, along with the overturning stream function, similarly defined in potential density space, to investigate the causal link between surface forcing and decadal variability in the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). We use the stream functions to demonstrate that watermasses in the simulations are transformed to higher densities as they propagate around the subpolar gyre from their formation locations in the north‐east Atlantic and the Irminger Sea, consistent with the picture emerging from observations. The surface heat loss from the Irminger Sea is confirmed to be the dominant mechanism for decadal AMOC variability, with the heat loss anomaly from the Labrador Sea having about half the magnitude. A scalar metric based on the surface‐forced stream function, accumulated in time, is found to be a good predictor of changes in the overturning strength. The AMOC variability is shown to be related to that of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), primarily through the surface heat flux, itself dominated by the air‐sea temperature difference, but also with some local feedback from the SST to the surface fluxes. Variability in soil moisture has implications for regional terrestrial environments under a warming climate. This paper focuses on the spatiotemporal variability in the intra-annual persistence of soil moisture in China using the fifthgeneration reanalysis dataset by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts for the period 1979-2018. The results show that in China, the mean intra-annual persistence in the humid to arid zones increased from 60 to 115 days in the lower layer but decreased from 19 to 13 days and from 25 to 14 days in the upper and root layers, respectively. However, these changes were strongly attenuated in extremely dry and wet regions due to the scarcity of soil moisture anomalies. Large changes in persistence occurred in the lower soil layer in dryland areas, with a mean difference of up to 40 days between the 2010s and the 1980s. Overall increasing trends dominated the large-scale spatial features, despite regional decreases in the eastern arid zone and the North and Northeast China plains. In the root layer, the two plains experienced an expanded decrease while on the Tibetan Plateau it was dominated by decadal variability. These contrasting changes between the lower and root layers along the periphery of the transition zone was a reflection of the enhanced soil hydrological cycle in the root layer. The enhanced persistence in drylands lower layer is an indication of the intensified impacts of soil moisture anomalies (e.g., droughts) on terrestrial water cycle. Arecent paper byHu et al. (https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.aax7727) has raised the interesting question of whether the ocean circulation has been ''speeding up'' in the last decades. Their result contrasts with some estimates of the lack of major trends in oceanic surface gravity waves and wind stress. In general, both the increased energy and implied power inputs of the calculated circulation correspond to a small fraction of the very noisy background values. An example is the implied power increase of about 3 3 108 W, as compared to wind energy inputs of order 1012W. Here the problem is reexamined using a state estimate that has the virtue of being energy, mass, etc. conserving. Because it is an estimate over an entire recent 26-yr interval, it is less sensitive to the strong changes in observational data density and distribution, and it does not rely upon nonconservative ''reanalyses.'' The focus is on the energy lying in the surface layers of the ocean. A potential energy increase is found, but it is almost completely unavailable--arising from the increase in mean sea level. A weak increase in kinetic energy in the top layer (10m) is confirmed, corresponding to an increase of order 1 cms-1 yr-1 over 26 years. The Arctic Ocean is undergoing significant changes, with rapid sea ice decline, unprecedented freshwater accumulation, and pronounced regional sea level rise. In this paper, we analyzed the sea level variation in the Arctic Ocean based on a global simulation with 4.5-km resolution in the Arctic Ocean using the multi-resolution Finite Element Sea Ice-Ocean Model (FESOM). The simulation reasonably reproduces both the main spatial features of the sea surface height (SSH) and its temporal evolution in the Arctic Ocean in comparison with tide gauge and satellite data. Using the model results, we investigated the low-frequency variability of the Arctic SSH. Both the first two dominant modes of the annual-mean SSH evolution in the Arctic Ocean present decadal variability and can be mainly attributed to the variability of the halosteric height, thus the freshwater content. The first mode can be explained by the Arctic Oscillation (AO). The AO-related atmospheric circulation drives the accumulation and release of freshwater in the Arctic deep basin and the consequent ocean mass change over the continental shelf, leading to the antiphase changes in SSH between the shelf seas and the deep basin. The second mode shows an antiphase oscillation between the two Arctic deep basins, the Amerasian and Eurasian Basins, which is driven by the Arctic dipole anomaly (DA). The DA-related wind anomaly causes a spatial redistribution of freshwater between the two basins, leading to the antiphase SSH changes. By using a dedicated sensitivity simulation in which the recent sea ice decline is eliminated, we find that the sea ice decline contributed considerably to the observed sea level rise in the Amerasian Basin in the recent decades. Although the sea ice decline did not change the mean SSH averaged over the Arctic Ocean, it significantly changed the spatial pattern of the SSH trend. Our finding indicates that both the wind regime and ongoing sea ice decline should be considered to better understand and predict the changes in regional sea level in the Arctic Ocean. In this paper, decadal variability of the Pacific-South America (PSA) mode is examined from year 1871 to 2008 based on the newly developed ocean and atmosphere reanalysis products. The PSA mode, mirroring the Pacific-North America mode in the Northern Hemisphere, emerges as the second EOF mode of 500 mb geopotential height anomalies. The mode displays substantial interannual-decadal variability with distinct timescales between 3-8 and 10-18 years, respectively. The decadal variability of the PSA mode is found to be associated with the coupled ocean-atmosphere interaction over the subtropical South and tropical Pacific. The subduction of the subtropical temperature anomalies in the South Pacific in conjunction with the tropical-subtropical atmospheric teleconnection plays important role in the decadal variability of the PSA mode. El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) diversity is characterized based on the longitudinal location of maximum sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) and amplitude in the tropical Pacific, as Central Pacific events are typically weaker than Eastern Pacific events. SSTA pattern and intensity undergo low‐frequency modulations, affecting ENSO prediction skill and remote impacts, and resulting in low‐frequency changes in ENSO variance. Yet, how different ENSO types contribute to these decadal variance changes remains unclear. Here, we decompose the low‐frequency changes of ENSO variance into contributions from ENSO diversity categories. We propose a fuzzy clustering of monthly SSTA to allow for non‐binary event category memberships, where each event can belong to different clusters. Our approach identifies two La Niña and three El Niño categories and shows that the major shift of ENSO variance in the mid‐1970s was associated with an increasing likelihood of strong La Niña and extreme El Niño events. On decadal time scales, a zonal SST dipole dominates the tropical Indian Ocean in boreal late summer and fall, called the decadal Indian Ocean dipole (D-IOD). The D-IOD has a spatial pattern different from the traditional interannual IOD, with its eastern pole located off Java, rather than the whole Sumatra–Java coasts as the latter. Here, we show that the D-IOD is generated by both the remote tropical Pacific decadal variability (TPDV) forcing and the decadal modulation of interannual IODs, but with its distinctive spatial pattern and seasonality mainly shaped by the former. In August–September (AS), due to the seasonal strengthening of trade winds, the descending branch of TPDV-induced Walker circulation moves westward into the eastern Indian Ocean relative to June–July, which stimulates equatorial easterly anomalies and oceanic upwelling Kelvin waves, causing subsurface cooling off Java. The subsurface cooling just occurs within the time window of climatological coastal upwelling so that subsurface cold anomalies are brought into the surface by mean upwelling and further transported offshore by mean flows, forming the D-IOD eastern pole. The subsurface cooling is only generated near Java but not Sumatra, because the former is closer to the exit of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF). Weakened ITF during positive TPDV inhibits the growth of subsurface warming off Java prior to the establishment of AS equatorial easterly anomalies, whereas this ITF effect is not observed off Sumatra. Moreover, warming of the D-IOD western pole might be associated with off-equatorial Rossby waves induced by TPDV-related wind stress curls. Significance Statement: The decadal Indian Ocean dipole (D-IOD) is one of the leading decadal modes of the tropical Indian Ocean SST variations. Its formation mechanisms, especially those related to its spatiotemporal characteristics, are not well understood. Based on observations and reanalysis, we show that the tropical Pacific decadal variability (TPDV) mainly accounts for the distinctive spatial pattern and seasonality of the D-IOD via the seasonal migration of the anomalous Walker circulation and ensuing oceanic subsurface dynamics. Our results highlight that the TPDV is an important source of D-IOD's predictability, and it might be beneficial for operational decadal predictions for the tropical Indian Ocean. This paper presents a study on long-term surface solar radiation (SSR) changes over China under clear- and all-sky conditions and analyzes the causes of the "dimming" and "brightening." To eliminate the nonclimatic signals in the historical records, the daily SSR dataset was first homogenized using quantile-matching (QM) adjustment. The results reveal rapid dimming before 2000 not only under all-sky conditions, but also under clear-sky conditions, at a decline rate of −9.7 ± 0.4 W m−2 decade−1 (1958–99). This is slightly stronger than that under all-sky conditions at −7.4 ± 0.4 W m−2 decade−1, since the clear-sky dimming stopped 15 years later. A rapid "wettening" of about 40-Pa surface water vapor pressure (SWVP) from 1985 to 2000 was found over China. It contributed 2.2% to the SSR decline under clear-sky conditions during the whole dimming period (1958–99). Therefore, water vapor cannot be the main cause of the long-term dimming in China. After a stable decade (1999–2008), an intensive brightening appeared under the clear-sky conditions at a rate of 10.6 ± 2.0 W m−2 decade−1, whereas a much weaker brightening (−0.8 ± 3.1 W m−2 decade−1) has been observed under all-sky conditions between 2008 and 2016. The remarkable divergence between clear- and all-sky trends in recent decades indicates that the clouds played two opposite roles in the SSR changes during the past 30 years, by compensating for the declining SSR under the cloud-free conditions in 1985–99 and by counteracting the increasing SSR under cloud-free conditions in 2008–16. The precipitation over arid regions may be low, but its environmental impacts can be very dramatic. The decadal variability in precipitation can also effectively disturb climatic environmental regimes. To advance the understanding of precipitation variability over arid regions, this paper focuses on decadal variability in summer precipitation over arid northwest China and its associated atmospheric circulations, using observation‐based data and atmospheric reanalysis during the period 1961–2016. The results show that climatologically, precipitation over this region has a strong seasonality and that 60.2% falls in summer. The summer precipitation increased 15.5 mm, accounting for 52.4% of the total annual increase in this part of China from 1961 to 2016. Decadal changes in summer precipitation occurred in approximately 1991 with a north–south difference structure modulated by large‐scale circulation anomalies over the Indian Ocean and central Asia as well as a shift in water vapour transport. In a positive phase, anticyclonic circulation anomalies occupy the Indian Ocean with cyclonic anomalies over central Asia, favouring stronger northwards moisture transport towards northwest China, and vice versa. Moreover, the significantly enhanced northwards water vapour transport from low‐latitude seas is also critical to the decadal changes approximately in 1991 summer precipitation in arid northwest China. These findings contribute to the understanding of decadal precipitation variability over arid regions, especially the increasing influence of low‐latitude circulations and moisture transport processes. This paper describes version 3 of the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA3) ocean reanalysis with enhancements to model resolution, observation, and forcing datasets, and the addition of active sea ice. SODA3 relies on the ocean component of the NOAA/Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory CM2.5 coupled model with nominal ¼° resolution. A scheme has also been implemented to reduce bias in the surface fluxes. A 37-yr-long ocean reanalysis, SODA3.4.2, created using this new SODA3 system is compared to the previous generation of SODA (SODA2.2.4) as well as to the Hadley Centre EN4.1.1 no-model statistical objective analysis. The comparison is carried out in the tropics, the midlatitudes, and the Arctic and includes examinations of the meridional overturning circulation in the Atlantic. The comparison shows that SODA3.4.2 has reduced systematic errors to a level comparable to those of the no-model statistical objective analysis in the upper ocean. The accuracy of variability has been improved particularly poleward of the tropics, with the greatest improvements seen in the Arctic, accompanying a substantial reduction in surface net heat and freshwater flux bias. In this paper we examine various options for the calculation of the forced signal in climate model simulations, and the impact these choices have on the estimates of internal variability. We find that an ensemble mean of runs from a single climate model [a single model ensemble mean (SMEM)] provides a good estimate of the true forced signal even for models with very few ensemble members. In cases where only a single member is available for a given model, however, the SMEM from other models is in general out-performed by the scaled ensemble mean from all available climate model simulations [the multimodel ensemble mean (MMEM)]. The scaled MMEM may therefore be used as an estimate of the forced signal for observations. The MMEM method, however, leads to increasing errors further into the future, as the different rates of warming in the models causes their trajectories to diverge. We therefore apply the SMEM method to those models with a sufficient number of ensemble members to estimate the change in the amplitude of internal variability under a future forcing scenario. In line with previous results, we find that on average the surface air temperature variability decreases at higher latitudes, particularly over the ocean along the sea ice margins, while variability in precipitation increases on average, particularly at high latitudes. This paper presents observational evidence of the atmospheric circulation during the Late Maunder Minimum (LMM, 1685-1715) based on daily wind direction observations from ships in the English Channel. Four wind directional indices and 8-point wind roses are derived at monthly scales to characterize the LMM. The results indicate that the LMM was characterized by a pronounced meridional circulation and a marked reduction in the frequency of westerly days all year round, as compared to the present (1981-2010). The winter circulation contributed the most to the cold conditions. Nevertheless, findings indicate that the LMM in Europe was more heterogeneous than previously thought, displaying contrasting spatial patterns in both circulation and temperature, as well as large decadal variability. In particular, there was an increase of northerly winds favoring colder winters in the first half of the LMM, but enhanced southerlies contributing to milder conditions in the second half of the LMM. The analysis of the atmospheric circulation yields a new and complete classification ofLMMwinters. The temperature inferred from the atmospheric circulation confirms the majority of extremely cold winters well documented in the literature, while uncovering other less documented cold and mild winters. The results also suggest a nonstationarity of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) pattern within the LMM, with extremely cold winters being driven by negative phases of a ''high zonal'' NAO pattern and ''low zonal'' NAO patterns dominating during moderately cold winters. Decadal prediction is a relatively new branch of climate science that bridges the gap between seasonal climate forecasts and multidecadal-to-century projections of climate change. This paper develops a three-step framework toward the potential application of decadal temperature predictions using the Community Climate System Model, version 4 (CCSM4). In step 1, the predictions are evaluated and it is found that the temperature hindcasts show skill over some regions of the United States and Canada. In step 2, the predictions are manipulated using two methods: a deterministic-anomaly approach (like climate change projections) and a probabilistic tercile-based approach (like seasonal forecasts). In step 3, the predictions are translated by adding a delta (for the anomaly manipulation) and conducting a weighted resample (for the probabilistic manipulation), as well as using a new hybrid method. Using the 2010 initialized hindcast, the framework is demonstrated for predicting 2011-15 over two case-study watersheds [Ottawa (Canada) and Colorado]. For the Colorado watershed, there was a noticeable shift toward higher temperatures, and the delta, weighted resample, and hybrid translations all were better at capturing the observed temperatures than was an approach that used climatological values. For the Ottawa watershed, the observed temperatures over the period of prediction were only subtly different than the climatological values; therefore, the difference between the translation methods was less noticeable. The advantages and disadvantages of the manipulation and translation approaches are discussed, as well as how their use will depend on the user context. The authors emphasize that skill evaluations should be tailored to particular applications and identify additional steps that are needed before the decadal temperature predictions can be readily incorporated into applications. Emerging decadal climate predictions call for an assessment of decadal climate variability in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) database. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) in 10 control simulations from the CMIP3 and 22 from the CMIP5 database. All models overestimate the time lag between ENSO forcing and the PDO response. While half of the models exhibit ENSO-PDO correlation which is close to that in observation (>0.5) when the time lag is accounted for, the rest of the models underestimate this relationship. Models with stronger ENSO-PDO correlation tend to exhibit larger PDO-related signals in the equatorial and south Pacific, highlighting the key role of ENSO teleconnection in setting the inter-hemispheric Pacific pattern of the PDO. The strength of the ENSO-PDO relationship is related to both ENSO amplitude and strength of ENSO teleconnection to the North Pacific sea-level pressure variability in the Aleutian Low region. The shape of the PDO spectrum is consistent with that predicted from a combination of direct ENSO forcing, atmospheric stochastic forcing over the North Pacific and the re-emergence process in 27 models out of 32. Given the essential role of ENSO in shaping the Pacific decadal variability, models displaying realistic ENSO amplitude and teleconnections should be preferentially used to perform decadal prediction experiments. Seasonal hindcasts have previously been demonstrated to show multi‐decadal variability in skill across the twentieth century in indices describing El‐Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which drives global seasonal predictability. Here, we analyze the skill of predicting ENSO events' magnitude and spatial pattern, in the CSF‐20C coupled seasonal hindcasts in 1901–2010. We find minima in the skill of predicting the first (in 1930–1950) and second (in 1940–1960) principal components of sea‐surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Pacific. This minimum is also present in the spatial correlation of SSTs, in 1930–1960. The skill reduction is explained by lower ENSO magnitude and variance in 1930–1960, as well as decreased SST persistence. The SST skill minima project onto surface winds, leading to worse predictions in coupled hindcasts compared to hindcasts using prescribed SSTs. Questions remain about the offset between the first and second principal components' skill minima, and how the skill minima impact the extra‐tropics. We analyze reforecast skill in every Northern Hemisphere winter from 1901 to 2010 and find periods of high skill at the start and end of the century, with reduced skill in 1930–1960. This was likely caused by a reduction in the size of ENSO events, and decreased sea‐surface temperature memory. This reduction in ocean skill leads to lower skill for surface‐level winds. These results are important for understanding whether season‐ahead predictability changes over decades/centuries, and how climate change might impact this predictability. Understanding the sea level variability of the Bohai, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea (BYECS) is crucial for the socio-cultural and natural ecosystems of the coastal regions. In this study, based on satellite altimetry data, selected time range from 1993 to 2020, using the cyclostationary empirical orthogonal function (CSEOF) analysis method distinguishes the primary sea level variability modes. The analysis encompasses the seasonal signal, trend, and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) associated mode of sea level anomaly. The amplitude of the annual cycle demonstrates a non-stationary signal, fluctuating between-15% and 15% from the average. Monsoons, atmospheric forcing, ocean circulation, winddriven Ekman transport, and the Kuroshio emerge as the primary factors influencing BYECS variability on seasonal scales. The satellite altimetry sea level exhibits an average trend within the range of 3-4 mm/year, while the steric sea level trend is generally smaller, falling within the range of 0-2 mm/year. Throughout the entire period, the contribution of steric sea level to the mean sea level trend consistently remains below 25%. Furthermore, BYECS sea level variations have a sensitive response to strong El Niño years, with a clear regionalization of the response, which is related to the intricate atmospheric circulation and local wind pressures, as well as the influence of ocean circulation. In conclusion, we gained a more comprehensive understanding of sea level variability in the BYECS, especially the annual cycle of sea level amplitude and the response of ENSO. Sea surface temperature (SST) variability on decadal timescales has been associated with global and regional climate variability and impacts. The mechanisms that drive decadal SST variability, however, remain highly uncertain. Many previous studies have examined the role of atmospheric variability in driving decadal SST variations. Here we assess the strength of oceanic forcing in driving decadal SST variability in observations and state‐of‐the‐art climate models by analyzing the relationship between surface heat flux and SST. We find a largely similar pattern of decadal oceanic forcing across all ocean basins, characterized by oceanic forcing about twice the strength of the atmospheric forcing in the mid‐ and high latitude regions, but comparable or weaker than the atmospheric forcing in the subtropics. The decadal oceanic forcing is hypothesized to be associated with the wind‐driven oceanic circulation, which is common across all ocean basins. In this paper, the physical cause of why the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in the upstream Kuroshio Extension (KE) region is strong (weak) during a large (small) jet meandering period is studied by using the satellite altimeter data and constructing an eddy-dipole mode interaction theory from a reduced gravity shallow water wave quasi-geostrophic vorticity equation. It is found that the large KE jet meander corresponds to a large-scale positive-over-negative dipole SSH anomaly (KED mode, hereafter), a double-branch jet with a weak strength and a strong EKE in the upstream KE region, while the small jet meander corresponds to a negative-over-positive dipole anomaly (KED mode, hereafter), a strong single-branch jet, and a weak EKE. Further diagnostics using this new eddy-dipole mode interaction theory reveals that the horizontal advection and KED deformation field can change the eddy activity in the upstream KE region. When the KED mode is amplified by mesoscale eddies, the EKE grows by extracting energy from the KED deformation (shearing and stretching) field and due to a reduced eastward advection, thus showing a high EKE level during the KED mode (large jet meander) episode. In contrast, when the KED mode is intensified, the kinetic energy of the eddy weakens by losing its energy to the KED deformation field and by an enhanced eastward advection, thus showing a low EKE level during the KED mode (small jet meander) episode. Because the KED mode shows a clear decadal variation due to the modulation of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, both the KE jet and EKE exhibit inevitably a distinct decadal variability. The interaction between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the latitudinal shifts of the Gulf Stream sea surface temperature front (GSF) has been the subject of extensive investigations. There are indications of nonstationarity in this interaction, but differences in the methodologies used in previous studies make it difficult to draw consistent conclusions. Furthermore, there is a lack of consensus on the key mechanisms underlying the response of the GSF to the NAO. This study assesses the possible nonstationarity in the NAO–GSF interaction and the mechanisms underlying this interaction during 1950–2020, using reanalysis data. Results show that the NAO and GSF indices covary on the decadal time scale but only during 1972–2018. A secondary peak in the NAO–GSF covariability emerges on multiannual time scales but only during 2005–15. The nonstationarity in the decadal NAO–GSF covariability is also manifested in variations in their lead–lag relationship. Indeed, the NAO tends to lead the GSF shifts by 3 years during 1972–90 and by 2 years during 1990–2018. The response of the GSF to the NAO at the decadal time scale can be interpreted as the joint effect of the fast response of wind-driven oceanic circulation, the response of deep oceanic circulation, and the propagation of Rossby waves. However, there is evidence of Rossby wave propagation only during 1972–90. Here it is suggested that the nonstationarity of Rossby wave propagation caused the time lag between the NAO and the GSF shifts on the decadal time scale to differ between the two time periods. The physical reanalysis component of the Mediterranean Forecasting System is used to construct a high-resolution three-dimensional atlas of the Turner Angle. An assessment of the model quality shows a maximum degree of agreement with observations in the water column between 150 and 1000 m depth. The mean state of the favourable conditions for double diffusion processes is evaluated and the recent decadal variability is studied in terms of changes in the water mass properties. The results show that approximately 50% of the Mediterranean Sea is favourable to double diffusion processes, from which around 47% is associated with salt fingering. The Tyrrhenian, Ionian and southwestern Mediterranean are the most vulnerable basins to salt fingering, and the strongest processes can occur in the Tyrrhenian deep waters. Diffusive convection is most likely to occur in the Ionian, Aegean and eastern Mediterranean at vertical levels deeper than 1000 m. The observed gradual warming and salinification of the Mediterranean after 1997 decreased and increased the possibilities of the occurrence of salt fingers and double diffusive convections, respectively. The climatological atlas that is presented in this paper provides a three-dimensional picture of the regions that are either doubly stable or favourable to double diffusion instability and allows for the characterization of the diffusive properties of the water masses. This paper investigates the predictive relation between the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation across different climate models. Three overturning patterns that are significantly coupled to the AMO on interannual time scales across all climate models are identified using a statistical optimization technique. Studies of decadal-to-multidecadal ocean subsurface temperature variability are fundamental to improving the understanding of low-frequency climate signals. The present study uses the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) version 2.2.4 product for the period 1950-2007 to identify decadal modes of variability that characterize the upper Indo-Pacific Ocean temperature structure (5-466-m depth). An empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the 10-yr low-pass filtered temperature field applied across four depths shows that the dominant mode is characterized by a long-term temperature trend, with warming at the surface and cooling at the thermocline depth connecting the tropical western Pacific with the southern Indian Ocean via the Indonesian Seas. EOF analysis of the detrended 10-yr filtered temperature data and correlation analyses of the EOF time series with established large-scale climate indices identified the interdecadal Pacific oscillation as EOF1, the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation as EOF2, and the decadal component of El Niño Modoki as EOF3 (respectively, modes 2, 3, and 4 of the nondetrended data). EOF2 identifies the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation when the analysis is applied to sea surface temperature anomalies only, suggesting that the surface is forced dominantly by fluxes associated with global-scale weather patterns, while the subsurface is dominantly forced by internal dynamics of the Pacific Ocean. This paper demonstrates that the decadal-to-interdecadal temperature variability in SODA has a pronounced vertical extension through the upper ocean. The upper thermocline accounts for most of the variance in the analysis. This paper examines changes in the strength of the Walker circulation (WC) using the pressure difference between the western and eastern equatorial Pacific. Changes in observations and in 35 climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) phase 5 (CMIP5) are determined. On the one hand, 78% of the models show a weakening of the WC over the twentieth century, consistent with the observations and previous studies using CMIP phase 3 (CMIP3) models. However, the observations also exhibit a strengthening in the last three decades (i.e., from 1980 to 2012) that is statistically significant at the 95% level. The models, on the other hand, show no consensus on the sign of change, and none of the models shows a statistically significant strengthening over the same period. While the reasons for the inconsistency between models and observations is not fully understood, it is shown that the ability of the models to generate trends as large as the observed from internal variability is reduced because most models have weaker than observed levels of both multidecadal variability and persistence of interannual variability in WC strength. In the twenty-first-century future projections, the WC weakens in 25 out of 35 models, under representative concentration pathway (RCP) 8.5, 9 out of 11 models under RCP6.0, 16 out of 18 models under RCP4.5, and 12 out of 15 models under RCP2.6. The projected decrease is also consistent with results obtained previously using models from CMIP3. However, as the reasons for the inconsistency between modeled and observed trends in the last three decades are not fully understood, confidence in the model projections is reduced. This paper provides a review of atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature (SST) conditions that are associated with meteorological drought on the seasonal time scale in the Greater Horn of Africa (the region 10°S-15°N, 30°-52°E). New findings regarding a post-1998 increase in drought frequency during the March-May (MAM) 'long rains' are also reported. The period 1950-2010 is emphasized, although rainfall and SST data from 1901-2010 are used to place the recent long rains decline in a multidecadal context. For the latter case, climate model simulations and isolated basin SST experiments are also utilized. Climatologically, rainfall exhibits a unimodal June-August (JJA) maximum in west-central Ethiopia with a generally bimodal [MAM and October-December (OND) maxima] distribution in locations to the south and east. Emphasis will be on these three seasons. SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans show the strongest association with drought during OND in locations having a bimodal annual cycle, with weaker associations during MAM. The influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon critically depends on its ability to affect SSTs outside the Pacific. Salient features of the anomalous atmospheric circulation during drought events in different locations and seasons are discussed. The post-1998 decline in the long rains is found to be driven strongly (although not necessarily exclusively) by natural multidecadal variability in the tropical Pacific rather than anthropogenic climate change. North Atlantic atmosphere–ocean variability is assessed in climate model simulations from HighResMIP that have low resolution (LR) or high resolution (HR) in their atmosphere and ocean model components. It is found that some of the LR simulations overestimate the low-frequency variability of subpolar sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies and underestimate its correlation with the NAO compared to ERA5. These deficiencies are significantly reduced in the HR simulations, and it is shown that the improvements are related to a reduction of intrinsic (non-NAO-driven) variability of the subpolar ocean circulation. To understand the cause of the overestimated intrinsic subpolar ocean variability in the LR simulations, a link is demonstrated between the amplitude of the subpolar ocean variability and the mean state of the Labrador–Irminger Seas. Supporting previous studies, the Labrador–Irminger Seas tend to be colder and fresher in the LR simulations compared to the HR simulations and oceanic observations from EN4. This promotes upper-ocean density anomalies in this region to be more salinity-controlled in the LR simulations versus more temperature-controlled in the HR simulations and EN4 observations. It is argued that this causes the excessive subpolar ocean variability in the LR simulations by favoring a positive feedback between subpolar upper-ocean salinity and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) anomalies, rather than a negative feedback between subpolar SST and AMOC anomalies as in the HR simulations. The findings overall suggest that the subpolar ocean mean state impacts the variability of the ocean circulation and SSTs, including their relationship with the atmospheric circulation, in the extratropical North Atlantic. The genesis potential index (GPI) has been used widely to estimate the influence of large-scale conditions on tropical cyclone (TC) genesis. Here we find that two GPIs, the Emanuel–Nolan GPI (ENGPI) and the dynamic GPI (DGPI), show opposite skills in quantifying decadal variability of TC genesis in the western North Pacific (WNP). During 1979–2020, ENGPI shows a reverse decadal variation to the WNP TC genesis with a significant negative correlation of −0.61, while DGPI can reasonably reproduce the decadal variation of the WNP TC genesis with a significant correlation of 0.66. The opposite skills of the two indices arise from the opposed effects of dynamic and thermodynamic parameters on TC genesis induced by a WNP anomalous cyclonic circulation that controls the decadal variation of TC genesis. On the one hand, the cyclonic circulation leads to favorable dynamical conditions including ascending motion, cyclonic vorticity, and weakened vertical shear, and thus tends to increase the DGPI. On the other hand, the cyclonic circulation leads to unfavorable thermodynamical conditions (decreased maximum potential intensity and midlevel humidity) that tends to decrease the ENGPI. As a result, the DGPI and ENGPI are reversely evolved and eventually lead to their opposite correlation between TC genesis. The significant positive correlation between DGPI and TC genesis suggests a critical role in the large-scale dynamical control of the decadal variability of the WNP TC genesis. Significance Statement: Tropical cyclones (TCs) account for one-third of the deaths and economic losses from weather-, climate-, and water-related disasters. Understanding variations in TC activity from the perspective of large-scale conditions is of great importance to seasonal forecasting and disaster mitigation. Here we find that two genesis potential indexes (GPIs), the Emanuel–Nolan GPI (ENGPI) and dynamic GPI (DGPI), show opposite skill in quantifying decadal variability of TC genesis in the western North Pacific (WNP). The search for an explanation of correlations of weather and climate with solar activity has uncovered some subtle effects of the varying solar inputs, which include irradiance, energetic particles, electric fields induced by the solar wind, and the modulation of the galactic cosmic ray flux. Relevant phenomena have been identified in stratospheric chemistry and dynamics and in aerosols, atmospheric electricity, and clouds. The effects are small and appear intermittently in statistical analyses of observations. Correlations and theory permit responses to several solar inputs effective on the decadal time scales, making it difficult to distinguish them observationally. No mechanism for tropospheric decadal change can be considered to be definitely established, but for the day-to-day time scale there is clear observational evidence for clouds responding to solar wind-induced current flow (JZ) in the global electric circuit, due to changes in ionospheric potential, and independently from Forbush decreases of the cosmic ray flux. The responses to JZ also correlate separately with ionospheric potential changes due to changes in day-to-day thunderstorm activity. The identified mechanism is for electric charge effects on in-cloud scavenging, and this implies a decadal response, in view of decadal changes in JZ. However, a complete and quantitative model of the inferred electrically induced changes in cloud microphysics is not yet available. Atlantic decadal-to-bidecadal variability (ADV) is described from a multimillennial control integration of a version of the Kiel Climate Model (KCM). The KCM's ADV is the second most energetic mode of long-term North Atlantic variability in that simulation, whereas the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) is the leading mode that has been described in a previous study. The KCM's ADV can be regarded as a mixed oceanic gyre-overturning circulation mode that is forced by the North Atlantic Oscillation. The extratropical North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the model's ADV initially exhibit a tripolar structure in the meridional direction, which is linked to the gyre circulation. After some years, the SST-anomaly pattern turns into a monopolar pattern located in the subpolar North Atlantic. This transition is related to the overturning circulation. The AMV and the ADV co-exist and share some similarities. Both modes of variability rely on the upper-ocean heat transport into the subpolar North Atlantic. They differ in the importance of the gyre and overturning circulations. In this study, we investigate how a single leading linear El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) mode, as studied in Part I, leads to the irregular coexistence of central Pacific (CP) and eastern Pacific (EP) ENSO, a phenomenon known as ENSO spatiotemporal diversity. This diversity is fundamentally generated by deterministic nonlinear pathways to chaos via the period-doubling route and, more prevailingly, the subharmonic resonance route with the presence of a seasonally varying basic state. When residing in the weakly nonlinear regime, the coupled system sustains a weak periodic oscillation with a mixed CP/EP pattern as captured by the linear ENSO mode. With a stronger nonlinearity effect, the ENSO behavior experiences a period-doubling bifurcation. The single ENSO orbit splits into coexisting CP-like and EP-like ENSO orbits. A sequence of period-doubling bifurcation results in an aperiodic oscillation featuring irregular CP and EP ENSO occurrences. The overlapping of subharmonic resonances between ENSO and the seasonal cycle allows this ENSO irregularity and diversity to be more readily excited. In the strongly nonlinear regime, the coupled system is dominated by regular EP ENSO. The deterministic ENSO spatiotemporal diversity is thus confined to a relatively narrow range corresponding to a moderately unstable ENSO mode. Stochastic forcing broadens this range and allows ENSO diversity to occur when the ENSO mode is weakly subcritical. A close relationship among a weakened mean zonal temperature gradient, stronger ENSO activity, and more (fewer) occurrences of EP (CP) ENSO is noted, indicating that ENSO–mean state interaction may yield ENSO regime modulations on the multidecadal time scale. A cooling trend in summer (May-August) daytime temperatures since the mid-twentieth century over the central United States contrasts with strong warming of the western and eastern United States. Prior studies based on data through 1999 suggested that this so-called warming hole arose mainly from internal climate variability and thus would likely disappear. Yet it has prevailed for two more decades, despite accelerating global warming, compelling reexamination of causes that in addition to natural variability could include anthropogenic aerosol-induced cooling, hydrologic cycle intensification by greenhouse gas increases, and land use change impacts. Here we present evidence for the critical importance of hydrologic cycle change resulting from ocean-atmosphere drivers. Observational analysis reveals that the warming hole's persistence is consistent with unusually high summertime rainfall over the region during the first decades of the twenty-first century. Comparative analysis of large ensembles from four different climate models demonstrates that rainfall trends since the mid-twentieth century as large as observed can arise (although with low probability) via internal atmospheric variability alone, which induce warming-hole-like patterns over the central United States. In addition, atmosphereonly model experiments reveal that observed sea surface temperature changes since the mid-twentieth century have also favored central U.S cool/wet conditions during the early twenty-first century. We argue that this latter effect is symptomatic of external radiative forcing influences, which, via constraints on ocean warming patterns, have likewise contributed to persistence of the U.S. warming hole in roughly equal proportion to contributions by internal variability. Radiocarbon (14C) is a valuable tracer of ocean circulation, owing to its natural decay over thousands of years and to its perturbation by nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s. Previous studies have used 14C to evaluate models or to investigate past climate change. However, the relationship between ocean 14C and ocean circulation changes over the past few decades has not been explored. Here we use an Ocean-Sea-ice model (NEMO) forced with transient or fixed atmospheric reanalysis (JRA-55-do) and atmospheric 14C and CO2 boundary conditions to investigate the effect of ocean circulation trends and variability on 14C. We find that 14C/C (∆14C) variability is generally anti-correlated with potential density variability. The areas where the largest variability occurs varies by depth: in upwelling regions at the surface, at the edges of the subtropical gyres at 300 m depth, and in Antarctic Intermediate Water and North Atlantic Deep Water at 1000 m depth. We find that trends in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation may influence trends in ∆14C in the North Atlantic. In the high-variability regions the simulated variations are larger than typical ocean ∆14C measurement uncertainty of 2–5‰ suggesting that ∆14C data could provide a useful tracer of circulation changes. The most prominent oceanographic features in the Central Mediterranean are decadal reversals of the Northern Ionian Gyre (NIG), interpreted in terms of internal processes. Altimetry data, drifter data and model surface salinity products are used in this paper to define some specific features of the circulation related to the anticyclonic or cyclonic NIG modes. Results not only highlight different shapes and intensities of the Mid-Ionian Jet and northern Ionian meander among the two circulation mode, but emphasize distinct behaviour within the same mode, imputable to the variability of the mesoscale quasi-permanent features. The wind-driven Messina Rise Vortex, on the western side of the northern Ionian, and the Pelops Gyre, on the eastern side of the northern Ionian, show different behaviour during the first (1993–1996) and the second (2006–2010) anticyclonic periods, related to the cyclonic activity along the dense water pathway. When the dense water was of Aegean origin (1993–1996; "Aegean" anticyclone), the cyclonic mesoscale activity on the eastern flank of the Ionian overwhelmed the anticyclonic wind forcing, and led to the disappearance of the Pelops Gyre. When the dense water was of Adriatic origin (2006–2010; "Adriatic" anticyclone), the strengthening of cyclonic mesoscale activity on the western flank of the Ionian caused the shape change of the Messina Rise Vortex, favouring its longitudinal extension. The zonally-elongated Messina Rise Vortex reduced the inflow of Atlantic Water in the northern Ionian, and induced a strengthening of the eastward flowing Mid-Ionian Jet in the southern Ionian and Cretan Passage. From these results, it emerges that the interannual variability of the wind-driven quasi-permanent mesoscale gyres in the Ionian is influenced by internal forcing (location of the deep water formation site – Aegean or Adriatic Sea), in turn related to the major local climatic shift occurred in the last decades (the Eastern Mediterranean Transient). We show that the interplay between decadal and interannual variability, or rather between basin-wide and mesoscale circulation, affected the intrinsic characteristics of the NIG reversals. Linearized shallow water perturbation equations with approximation in an equatorial β plane are used to obtain the analytical solution of wave packet anomalies in the upper bounded equatorial ocean. The main results are as follows. The wave packet is a superposition of eastward travelling Kelvin waves and westward travelling Rossby waves with the slowest speed, and satisfies the boundary conditions of eastern and western coasts, respectively. The decay coefficient of this solution to the north and south sides of the equator is inversely proportional only to the phase velocity of Kelvin waves in the upper water. The oscillation frequency of the wave packet, which is also the natural frequency of the ocean, is proportional to its mode number and the phase velocity of Kelvin waves and is inversely proportional to the length of the equatorial ocean in the east-west direction. The flow anomalies of the wave packet of Mode 1 most of the time appear as zonal flows with the same direction. They reach the maximum at the center of the equatorial ocean and decay rapidly away from the equator, manifested as equatorially trapped waves. The flow anomalies of the wave packet of Mode 2 appear as the zonal flows with the same direction most of the time in half of the ocean, and are always 0 at the center of the entire ocean which indicates stagnation, while decaying away from the equator with the same speed as that of Mode 1. The spatial structure and oscillation period of the wave packet solution of Mode 1 and Mode 2 are consistent with the changing periods of the surface spatial field and time coefficient of the first and second modes of complex empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of flow anomalies in the actual equatorial ocean. This indicates that the solution does exist in the real ocean, and that El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) are both related to Mode 2. After considering the Indonesian throughflow, we can obtain the length of bounded equatorial ocean by taking the sum of that of the tropical Indian Ocean and the tropical Pacific Ocean, thus this wave packet can also explain the decadal variability (about 20 a) of the equatorial Pacific and Indian Oceans. In recent years, more and more record-breaking extreme weather/climate events have been reported from the Asian monsoon region, which have caused tremendous loss of property and lives. In this paper, we analyzed the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability during the Holocene and evaluated future climate extremes in monsoonal China from a paleoclimatic view. We found a significant regime transition to more chaotic fluctuations, with enhanced decadal variability of the ASM since 6.6 ka BP. We suggested the gradual intensification of ENSO was responsible for enhancing the ASM variability since the late mid-Holocene. If the observed relationship of monsoon mean intensity, ENSO and decadal variability of the ASM in the past 11.2 ka continue to exist, enhanced decadal variability of ASM in the future warming world will be expected. As a result, the intensification of daily precipitation extremes, superimposed on enhanced decadal variability of ASM, might make the record-breaking extremes more frequent in the future, increasing the risk of climate-related disasters in China. This study examines the changes in the outer size distribution of landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) over the Chinese mainland from 1977 to 2020. The period was divided into two epochs: 1977–98 and 1999–2020. The results show that the size distribution of landfalling TCs over South China has no apparent change, while that of landfalling TCs over East China (LTCEC) is narrower in the second epoch, and the difference in the median sizes between East China and South China become more significant. Furthermore, it is found that LTCEC formed over the western part of the western North Pacific (W-WNP) shifted to a larger size range (300–500 km) at landfall, while those formed over the eastern part of the western North Pacific (E-WNP) rarely grew to extremely large size (>500 km). Further investigation revealed that over the W-WNP, the genesis position of LTCEC migrated equatorward during the second epoch, leading to a longer TC lifetime before landfall. Also, the increase of background relative vorticity and moisture associated with the southward migration is conducive to larger initial vortices. For TCs originating from the E-WNP, the change in the active area of TC passages reduced the frequency of TCs affecting the Chinese coast. Moreover, the growth of TC size during the intensification stage was significantly suppressed, lowering the occurrence probability of extremely large TCs. Changes in the large-scale thermodynamic environments between the two epochs were explored. The decadal variability and long-term trend of upper-ocean temperature in the Southeast Indian Ocean since the 1950s are investigated based on an eddy-resolving ocean model and two observation-based products. All three datasets show increasing trends and significant decadal changes in both Southeast Indian Subantarctic Mode Water (SEISAMW) core layer temperature and mixed layer temperature (MLT). The temperature change in the SEISAMW core layer is induced by subducted heat change that is in turn due to a change in the MLT on both long-term trend and decadal time scale. A heat budget analysis finds that the long-term increase of MLT is mainly resulted from a combination of more heat flux from the atmosphere to the ocean and shallower mixed layer depth, while both the intensified zonal wind stress and the vertical entrainment have a negative contribution to the increase in the MLT. The decadal variability of MLT is dominated by changes of surface thermal forcing and horizontal advection, with the former contributing more than the latter. The change in the surface thermal forcing is a result of changes of both surface heat flux and mixed layer depth, and the change in the horizontal advection is due mainly to the change in the zonal wind stress. Further analysis suggests that the decadal changes of surface heat flux and zonal wind stress in the SEISAMW formation region are dominated by local zonal and meridional sea-level pressure gradients, respectively.
